Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

I just bought the book and have read about 1/3 of it. Although some of the claims may be far-fetched, there is some degree of truthfulness to some of the facts of the book.

These sentiments won't be popular on a "blog that is normally blindly supporting of Obama, but yeah...sometimes the truth does hurt. I think it is legitimate to question what Obama is portraying in this race is real. I don't think it is – he is like every other politician. Say what the electorate wants to hear to get elected.

Hussein doesn't need your ranting about everything the Repubs say about him. He did just fine whining his way through Hilary, and he won't let you down crying his way to the general election.

    How was that even bad?

Gotta keep your sense of humor?... sounded to me like he was calling the book a joke...

Obama has some pretty thin skin... not a good trait in a leader.

  7. The Way It Is

Corsi's on a mission to sink Obama? Well, Mission NOT Accomplished, not this time. If people weren't ready to lose their lunch over mention of the word "Republican," tripe like this might seem more significant. But on this go-around, only the Rush-lovers will be queing up for this garbage.

The problem is not his hearing it is his chicken-brain. He is just a high school graduate who seeks to be a president humoring himself by running aginst the Harvard grad.

McCain know these folks. Remember what they did to him in South Carolina about his adopted (black) daughter in 2000? Makes it even more disgusting to me that he's *one of them* now.

I'm an independent, who tries very hard to discern the true from the false in each of the elections. Years ago, I was a fan of McCain because I thought he was truly a public servant who said it like it was, regardless of popularity, etc. This campaign, though has made me see him as a shallow, power hungry, petty and untruthful man, and it's very sad. All that talk about not running a negative campaign has been completely forgotten. His campaign strategy is simply to try, by any means possible. to discredit his opponent, and I have no idea what his stand on any of the issues is. The ones he has finally articulated seem to change by whatever audience is in front of him at the time.

Why does he need to comment on the book? It has nothing to do with him... It's NOT McCain's job to defend Obama the messiah!

Obama is running scared now, and will say anything and do anything. TIME for the DNC to NOMINATE HILLARY CLINTON!!!

  23. MCSANE HAVE NO BRAIN

Why are people so outraged by McSane comments? John McCain is a republican using Karl Rove tactics to win this election to continue the Republican doctrine of the rich get richer and continue to squeeze and screw the working people. There are two possible explanations for McCain's behavior, either he is lying about the whole question deal or he is just simply too old and needs a hearing aid. How is he going to be able to answer the 3 AM phone call if he is not able to hear? Also, it could be that he did not understand the question?

Once you get to be John McCain's age, sure you probably don't remember what you did five minutes ago.

Jonh McCain was born before all the baby-boomers, that's how old he is? Perhaps, he is suffering from dementia. I'm just saying.
