Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

  2. Pathetic McCain

Every day we hear something low road about McDonald. I think it is about time he get out of the race. Cannot hear, cannot speak, cannot remember, just clueless, ignorant man uses and agrees with racism.
This is not a campaign on issues. He cannot beat Obama so they have to rwrite a book and Mcidiot has to endorse it as humor? What is humurous about it? What if some one writes a book about McCains sordid affairs, dealings, his wife drug habits, his involvement with lobbists etc. Add a lie here and there. Would he like that ye?
You silly McIdiot, you are loosing your common sense and dignity.
Bring race & religion, you are sure to loose this race. 72 years of age and you haven't learn anything. McShame.

It scares me to think that a senator who wants to be President of the United States is dropping the "I didn't hear the question" line, he should have followed up with I hate gay marriage, abortion is wrong, and God hates everyone else and the Christian right wing freaks will forget his answer.

If McCain does not come out in person to dis-avow Corsis book I, nor any of my extended family will vote for him. Can he stand to lose 23 votes in PA.

McCain is not ready to lead. Standing 4 feet away from a man asking a question, and RESPONDS, then lies and says he didnt hear it? Whoa.

More and more, McCain is exhibiting signs of oldness or alzheimers. It would be interesting to see the results of a mental exam, if he dares to submit to one.

Perhaps he did not hear and that is why he made that tasteless, insensitive, flip remark, I'll give him that. But now he knows, so why does he not condemn the book at this point? What excuse does this "honorable" man have?

McCain heard the remark clearly, he just wanted to avoid endorsing the vicious untruths in the book. He just means to let lies and untruths be said about his opponent and is trying to distance himself. When the fan blows it covers all and that includes McCain.
Now they say he didn't hear the question...does that mean he is going deaf as well as forgetful and confused? Gees, and he wants to be President?

The republicans are excellent at "not hearing"....It figures that the gop standard bearer didn't hear and has no comment. The war, the economy, health care, education, poverty, etc – they haven't heard and have no comment! Had enough? VOTE DEMOCRAT!

  13. Sad Sad McCain

John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny. You twisted mind.
We should commit you to mental institution. To you, every thing is
humour. Celebrity ad insulting two young Americans is humour, Moses ad is humour, staying in Iraq for 100 years is humour, asking you wife to join topless dance is humour, check your tires is humour,
Is this presidency a humour to you?
    Get out you pathetic weasle.

  14. McWhine

    Hi, Bayou:

I don't want half of what McWhine accomplished in his lifetime. What respect should we pay to McWhine?? Keating five? Sure you know those days that he weasled out, sold his respect to corporations. Or you meant deserving his ailing wife while she recovering from a car accident? Or failed to pay property tax and blamed on his aunt? Or lied about Obama's tax plan for the rich by claiming whoever earned $42,000/yr would get tax increase?

Yes, I'll grow old someday. But I won't lie to myself or others. Respect is earned not born with. Got it?

Why is the media pursuing the lies ?? and giving credibility to them by repeating them over and over ...........knowing it is a lie ? Kind of if you say it enough people may believe it .......very sad ....the media should be seeking the truth ........always .

Why in the world is the Obama camp lingering on McCain's response?
The issue requires Obama to respond, not McCain.
This just goes to show exactly how weak and feeble that Obama really is since he needs Maverick McCain to defend him.
    Sheesh!

Sometimes folks who have a hard time hearing or focusing do answer randomly without really listening to the question, which might be understandable for some, but not acceptable for someone who wants to be U.S. President.

The author should be sued for slander and McCain should be labeled as the coward that he really is.

McCain has been my Senator for almost 30 years and I can tell you that he has no trouble speaking out of both sides of his mouth. But most politicians do.

The problem is that he is not all that sharp and his having had a 'macho boy' military background, causes hime to think of problems in miltary terms and thus come up with 'military' solutions.

The good news is that he is probably not a knuckle dragging, born again Christian like Bush and Co, so he may actually listen to other solutions. If he gets elected, we can only hope....

Why would anyone buy a book that is fictional when they can go see a great movie instead; at least that way you pay for what you get. It is crazy how people will fall for this ploy of lies written by someone so he can make money.
