Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Sounds to me like the Republican Party is performing acts of desparation when they have to resort to total lies and innuendo about the opposition. If they can't win on their own merit, then they are hanging themselves with this latest bookwriting disaster of fabrication! You can't fool the public twice with that crap.

It's hard to believe how continually vicious and unprincipled Republicans/Conservatives are. Unfortunately a significant part of our electorate is the same. It will believe outright lies if they support what it wants to believe. Even the transparency of getting the swift boat
"writer" to do the same sort of job on Obama won't get to them
I just hope that Obama's people do a better job of combating it
    than did Kerry's.

The article doesn't mention that the book owes its spot on the NYT best-seller list to it having been bulk-ordered by right-wing organizations, probably trying to give it some semblance of legitimacy.

Andy says leftists complain louder and louder when they are wrong. What do right-wingers do? Or moderates while we're at it? Some argument you've got there. Do your fact checking, and you'll find that Obama has a right to complain this time.

McCain may "not fight dirty" as he constantly claims, but he doesn't do anything to keep the attack dogs at bay. Not to mention he pleads the 5th every time he slips. He daren't blame age… When it comes time to being in office, you don't get mulligans Mr. McCain.

Okay, so am I suppose to believe that McCain didn't hear the question and just made up an answer to "something in the universe" or that he heard the question and said what he meant? If he didn't hear the question then what was he responding to? How stupid are we Americans suppose to be?

i don't recall mccain having such a sense of humor when bush/rove accused him of fathering an illegitimate child in the 2000 primaries. i don't even recall him having a sense of humor during the 2004 swift boat attacks on john kerry. how convenient that he suddenly develops a sense of humor when it's his opponents name being drug through the mud.
    what a shameless sellout.

Why did CNN replace "McCain" with "Kerry" in the last sentence without retraction acknowledgement?

WITH ALL THE FLIP FLOPS OF OBAMA WHY WOULD ANYONE BELIEVE HIS VERSION OF ANYTHING? HE HASN'T PROVEN ANYHTING BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT OR WITH ACTUAL FACTS. ALL HE HAS DONE IS DENY, DENY, DENY. AND NOW ON THE ATTACK. JUST BECAUSE HE DENIES OR ATTACKS DOES NOT MAKE HIM VERITABLE...HE FLIP FLOPS TOO MUCH. HE LIED ABOUT NOT BEING IN PASTOR WRIGHT'S CHURCH AND THEN ADMITTED HE DID. FOR ME, THAT'S TOO BLATANT A LIE TO BELIEVE HIM ON ANYTHING ELSE THEREAFTER

The book repeats claims about Obama that are known to be false for one simple reason ... A lie, told often enough, becomes the truth for a lot of people, and the Republicans know it. It worked against John Kerry in 2004. Robert Dole claimed that Kerry did not deserve his three purple hearts because he didn't even bleed when injured. John Kerry still has shrapnel in his body, would the Republicans have us believe that he was born with it? The lies worked in 2004, wouldn't surprise me a bit if they work just as well in 2008.

obama can't dispute the fact that he is "friendly" with terrorist Ayers, and his wife Bernadine who bombed our pentagon, a police headquarters, and other buildings. obama has bad judgement to be friendly with terrorist. rezko the criminal, another friend of obama's is also written about in the book. obama has a thin resume, and no foriegn policy experience.

What's the deal with Obama's hair? He has either quit coloring it or all the stress is turning it gray very quickly.

    ************************************

He is going for that mature look, you know the kind of look that give you life experience and so he has stopped coloring his hair. He is 47 years old remember..

This guy has no business running for office. He can't hear, doesn't know geography (unless Lieberman tells him) and can't speak off the cuff without a gaffe.

His campaign is run by Karl Rove's people and they've been trying hard to keep him on track–even taking his cell phone away so he doesn't get influenced by "other opinions" and go off on his own.

But here we see that he blew it again.....wow.

EVANGELICALS = SPIRIT OF NEW TESTAMENT PHARISEES

For the Evangelicals, Religious-Right, Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Denomination and "Focus on The Family"; your 'loud silence' is a witness of your agreement and support of Corsi's book of lies. This is no surprise considering your 200 year hatred of people that don't look like you and not always agree with you.

Corsi smears YOUR CHRISTIAN BROTHER Senator Obama with blatant lies, and the Religious-Right and SBC nod silently in approval. This is another example why the hypocritical Religious-Right is crumbling. You stand by and say nothing when a Christian Brother gets smeared while fighting 'corporate masters' and 'lobby-control political scoundrels' trying to enslave hardworking Americans in to 3rd world existence.

    GOD Bless America!
    GOD Bless Obama!

Were you mixing names or do you remember that some of the same swift boaters did attack McCain when he ran against Bush in the primaries? McCain is now using some of the same Bush family attack dogs that attacked him. Just more proof that the 'maverick' 'independant' has sold himself to the neocons in return for a chance to be president. He's already shown his foreign policy expertise with his strong "nations don't invade nations" response to the Russian invasion.

As for the appologists posting...Sorry their is no excuse for that pile of crap called a book.

It looks like John McCain doesn't have either the courage or dignity to denounce this piece of trash from Corsi, who has been shown to be a lying bigot.

If you read the 'Audacity of Hope' by Obama you would know that he wrote, "If things get ugly I will stand with the Muslims."

Okay, Americans, what does that mean?

The republicans play word games and I hope we have learned something the last eight years. If they (republicans) say it good for America, then it really bad for America you can count on that. You'll hear the same names, the same lies. same old game. We need a new face with new name and new ideals . This man writes trash. .

Since when is your opponent suppose to defend you? McCain is not responsible for a book someone writes. Anyone who says anything against Obama is a racist/bigot. McCain could spend all his time defending Obama, that is not his job. Obamas' own words give a person all the ammo they need. He admits he used drugs to the point of addiction in his own book. He has some unsavory friends, not to mention Rev, Wright
