Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Guys, this isn't the Obama camp whining over something trivial (which it is), this is the DNC. The fact is, neither the Obama or McCain camps have been playing the game respectfully in the slightest, but everyone needs to realize that this is a political campaign (that special time every four years when all of those straight-faced, honorable politicians get to make fools of each other).

Well, just goes to show you how this man thinks. If you remember, he thought it was funny when he sang bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. Pretty twisted if you ask me. Looks like the Republicans are up to the same tricks they used to get Bush reelected and I truly hope the American people don't fall for it. This election is too important to all of us and to our grandchildren.

If he didn't hear the question how will he hear the answers in the Oval Office? Or was it just another of his humourous smart remarks like his "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran." This man is showing more signs of senility, old age, and incapability every hour! NO McBUSH!

Is it customary for McCain to respond to questions he did not hear? What was his response in regards to?

omg, do we live in a free country or not? anyone has a right to come out with a book, and they have a right to write about a presidential candidate. that doesn't have anything to do with Mccain. they both need to stop demanding the other to start "denouncing" people right and left. Stop with the stupidity, and focus on what you're gonna do to fix this country. and barack really really needs a thicker skin, he's acting like a whiny little girl (even the all worshipping liberal media says he can't take criticism).

America has been swift boated. Ignorant predominantly poor folks can't seem to vote to get rid of the hand that oppresses them. McCain may not win but either way America has already lost all credibility in the world and is almost poised for WW3. So....Laugh at that republicans. It's not so funny is it?

Does Obama even understand the meaning of free speech. It means people who don't like you can say whatever they want about you, and it is up to everyone else to use their freedom of listening or reading to take in whatever they please. A Democrat bashing freedom is nothing new though.

Just like Obama and his supporters blaming his opponent for comments he didn't make. They don't realize people have their own minds and thoughts on the matter not like OBAMA who steals from other chandidates.

Not only did Senator McCain not hear the question about Corsi"s book, he apparently does not hear nor listen to the American people.

Any time there's a mention of Corsi's book at the top of the New York Times bestseller list, it should be pointed out that it got there because of bulk purchases by conservative groups which end up giving them away or selling them a few weeks later for pennies on the dollar. Gaming the system so that conservative books hit #1 is standard practice for imprints like Mary Matalin's.

Oh, and on a related topic, it was great to see Larry King drop the big hammer on Corsi's head the other night. I didn't think he had it in him, but he did, and it was an epic take-down. If only the rest of the media were as good at exposing the truth about Corsi and his ilk.

OMG–the book was completely debunked by the RIGHT, not just the left. That the book is a bunch of lies or exaggerations and can't be taken seriously is waht McCain probably meant, not that he personally thinks racist innuendos are funny. In any case, I it's a shame McCain's camp said he didn't hear the question because that alone raises the "age" issue facing him. But bottom line is Obama needs to lighten up and figure out the difference between when people are laughing with you (McCain) and not at you.
