Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

I do not know which is worse that he answered a question that he claims he didn't hear (maybe age is playing a part in this...) Or that he tries to make light of some serious claims that are only founded in hate and ignorance....

At the last paragraph, you have John McCain, it should be John Kerry, because I don't think John McCain was then-Democratic presidential nominee.

Senelity is setting in and all his meaness is coming out! Wait till he blows his temper and pushes the "red" button! I'm sick of this book and what that man has done to our country. People read up on the "Constitutional Party" of which he belongs!! THey are all nut cases and will try to destroy anyone in American politics he thinks has a chance of getting in! Also, if want a true book, read "The Real McCain".
Go Obama–Please, please, out with the old and in with the new!!

When are McCain and his follower going to start focusing on the issuse that matter to the people in America. They need to start showing the people what they will do to fix the problems this country is facing and put the childhood games aside.

Johnny Mac knows how to play the Swift Boat game.

He's more than willing to profit by Corsi's libels, and knows better than to dirty his own hands with it.

Too bad he doesn't know as much about about keeping his mouth shut when visiting with Saakashvili.

    McCain:

Kicked his first wife to the curb like a sack of garbage, made promises to the president of Georgia that we lack the means to keep, and was an economic neophyte two weeks before he was an expert, and NOW he decides he'd better keep his mouth shut.

John McCain, a True American, the President we all Deserve!

McCain is a different man in the general election than he was in the primaries. As an independent, I have a very hard tim getting excited to rally behind him. Where did the integrity and respect go?

The Dnc is a joke... Maybe mccain agrees with the author, being so that would be an appropriate comment.

Of course he didn't hear the question. He didn't have the response written by his aides on his flash cards so it's irrelavent.

How some people can still vote for McCain is beyond human comprehension. Ask any McCain supporter why they are supporting him and its usually because they oppose Obama and not because they actually support McCain.

So, now he has heard the question, the answer is no comment from the man who said he would run a respectable campaign.

I am sick of McCain and his gotta keep a sense of humor attitude, he said that about his Paris Hilton and Britney Spears ad, he thought they were funny. I'm glad he has time to joke while the rest of us worry about our jobs, homes, health care, gasoline and our children's education, but I guess when you have a rich wife, you have time to think everything is soooooooo funny. He is running to be the president, not a stand up comedian!

Yeah right. If you believe that then I have a bridge in Russia I'd like to sell you. This idiot heard the question. What did he think the question was? McCain denounced Corsi's 2004 book against Kerry and was very upset with Bush and Rove swiftboating him in 2000 and pledged to never have anything to do with any of this stuff. My question is seeing how this is the exact same smear stuff from the exact same smear artist, why doesn't McCain denounce it? Obama's forced to denounce everything so now it's Johnny's turn. My guess is that he's okay with this trash book. What a "maverick".

Seems to me that saying you're on a mission to take down a presidential candidate ought to earn you a visit from the Secret Service. But maybe I just didn't hear the question. Speak up, sonny.

You may want to check you sources. John McCain wasn't the Democratic nominee, that would be John Kerry. Oh editor, editor... Jeez I guess oversensationalizing is just to exciting these days.

McCain is right... you have to keep your sense of humor. If you can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen. In this case, then just get out of the race. Unfortunately, that is the way the media and politics go hand in hand and if you are not thick-skinned enough, then just get out! No one wants a whiner in the White House!
