Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

McCain is right. If Obama gets upset at little things like books (he sure doesn't have any complaints about all the wooing he is getting by the press, nor did he complain when Hillary was getting smeared by the media), what would he do if president in the face of a confrontation by Iran or Russia?

Wow, once again Mr. Junior Senator's silly little campaign has ultra-thin skin. Nothing new here.

For crying out loud. First of all, even if McCain said he agreed with it, so what?

Second of all: the book doesn't claim he is a Muslim. The CNN writer who wrote this story should get their facts straight. The book says that he was educated as a Muslim as a child. It doesn't say he was or is a Muslim, just that for a period of time in his childhood he received the same education as a Muslim would.

Should we believe this as anything other than an outright lie? McCain appeared to know exactly what he answered as he coincidently was meeting with another swiftboater at the time.

McCain will not be commenting on the book? That is not the "maverick" straight talker I remember. I cannot believe I supported this guy in 2000.

Wouldn't it be nice (will never happen) if the political world was devoid of people like Corsi and Cheney. Unfortunately, many of those that deal in propaganda believe that the longer and louder you tell lies the more likely many people will come to believe them. We only have to look tothe escapades of Dr. Gobbles during the Nazi regime to see clear evidence of the effectiveness of this smear tactic. Hang in there Mr Obama, you are one of the few fresh and hopeful faces for our country that is in dire need of effective and logicial leadership.

"then-Democratic nominee John McCain" was really John Kerry. You should probably change that.

he didn't hear the question because he's so old his ears don't work or because he's so senile that he didn't understand it? or maybe because he's so cynical that he thinks he can just lie his way out of bad judgement??

    Obama made his bed...

now he must lie in it.

Next time... no intra-party hate... no race-baiting...no vitriolic insults against other democrats.

The Obama strategy of divide and conquer will backfire on him in NOV.

We love equality, justice and fair campaigns MORE than we love Obama.

"...the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book."

John McCain will answer questions that he never even heard? Or at least that is his excuse when his answer is unpopular?

    Heaven help us.

This seem to be the way in America these days, lies, sex, sell whether it's true or not; some folks will buy and take the bait. What does this say about McCain answering something he can't hear.
Can he hear? Now this show his age!

Now McCain can't hear. First he can't remember, then he gets confused and now he can't hear - and how can we trust him to competently run the country. With Lindsay Graham and Joe Lieberman they are more like the three stooges.
