Obama gave President Bush some rare praise.
Obama gave President Bush some rare praise.

LAKE FOREST, California (CNN) - Here is what's interesting about this forum: within minutes, Warren goes from asking about taxes to asking what to do with the 148-million orphans in the world to asking whether evil exists. It keeps up the energy.

My sense is this will be one of those times when we will learn a lot about how a candidate thinks - without any breaking news.

Whoa - stop the presses - a rarity: Obama praises Bush for increased U.S. efforts to battle AIDS around the world.

whether anybody realizes it or not OBAMA is bush III.
count on it. he's not getting out of iraq, will soften his tone on taxes. staet a bigger war in afghanistand, expand the bush spending program even more.

what do the disagree on? JUDGES only!

Becky Montgomery   August 17th, 2008 1:43 am ET

My sense is this is a planted question that feeds into an opportunity for McCain to tell about the adoption of his daughter. That was, of course, a nice thing of the McCains to do, but this question was plainly asked to give him an advantage.

Did he ask about infidelity? No, and that would have given Obama an advantage.

Let's see, was there an agenda?

'Bama for Obama   August 17th, 2008 1:40 am ET

Obama giving credit where credit is due. This is the sign of an intelligent and impartial president to me.

Islandgirl45   August 17th, 2008 1:19 am ET

Actually, Candy, this is old news.
Barack Obama praised George Bush's AIDS program much earlier this year at a faith forum with Hillary Clinton. John McCain didn't attend that one.

ADAM   August 17th, 2008 1:15 am ET

OBAMA LOOKS VERY PRESDENTSAL . HE LOOKS COOL .

BO OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl from MI   August 17th, 2008 12:58 am ET

One of the few things GWB has done that is actually noble and doesn't benefit his campaign supporters or Big Oil.

And then GWB turns around and wants to gut the Endangered Species Act. Is it any wonder why GWB gets so little praise from Obama and the rest of us?

HOPE HAMILTON   August 17th, 2008 12:53 am ET

Candy, I don't know why you'd be surprised that Obama would praise Bush for his humanitarian efforts? Obama is a giant for anyone who helps the "least of these". i.e. I think you missed the verse in Matt. It says to treat all people like you'd treat Jesus". Obama is a Christ-like person, so has the right to call himself a Christ-one. Walking in His footsteps.
I t is not necessary to bash other's who do good. That is the example of UNITY that our country needs. Only Obama is stressing this wonderful goal for our country and the world. SEE THE GOOD AND PRAISE IT.

aware   August 17th, 2008 12:39 am ET

This was a better question for McCain. He and Cindy did adopt an orphan.

McCain certainly has the depth and life experience Obama lacks!

McCain 08! :)

CB   August 17th, 2008 12:25 am ET

Obama spoke from a personal faith base level and from his heart. John McWar did nothing but campaign and spoke of war and every answer.

Obama 08

Penelope Posner   August 17th, 2008 12:15 am ET

this is not unusual for Obama he credits his opponents when credit is due

Wendy   August 17th, 2008 12:05 am ET

You could say all of the questions were curve balls for Obama. McCain was the only one with rehearsed answered.

Joseph   August 16th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

McCain will never raise taxes unless you are earning more than $5 million. In fact he wants to give tax rebates to all in view of the nations current over spending habits ... Sound very poor and unrealistic. I wish he could be honest enough to tell us the economically viable truth without stumping for votes.

Barak is calling America to brace up for what is to come. There will be tax increases and some belt tightening times ahead... I like realistic people and I want to be lead by people like that.

Ps. this is the same mindset that fails Louisiana flood victims but spends billions in Iraq.

GrandMa   August 16th, 2008 11:53 pm ET

What a leader he say good and bad of some body he is the best

H. D. Weaver   August 16th, 2008 11:50 pm ET

I don't understand why you are 'shocked' that Obama would say something positive about something that Bush has done good with. Obama's answer to the orphans was real, thought through and do-able. McCain never did answer this question. Credit where Credit is due.

gail   August 16th, 2008 11:48 pm ET

not a rarity candy – obama praised bush on this issue during the faith forum he participated in during the primaries.
i think it is unethical for you to be reporting on this campaign when you are so anti-obama.

Kris a Dem from MCcain land   August 16th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

Crowley, it is not shocking to hear the gray areas when it comes to politics they are there. No big suprise.

Omeili   August 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

President Bush is not that bad as people regards him to be, his problem was that he listenend to some really bad people from his party. The real George Bush was seen the time he visited Africa. It was the first time i saw him with a human face like smile.

Mister D   August 16th, 2008 11:30 pm ET

Obama really tried to talk about a solution to this problem. McCain just said he'd find a way to make it easier for Americans to adopt foreign children as if that will solve this huge problem. Then they went onto the next question. I think he might have spoken longer if he could have found a way to get the military involved.

Hear again, McCain presents an easy solution that will do little to fix things, and Obama really tries to find solutions.

But, your commentary appears to make us believe American's really don't want solutions that work. They just want simple answers they
"can understand". Please CNN, I don't believe Americans are as stupid as many say we are!

arlene, CA   August 16th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

I thought Obama did a SUPER job.

DR. YES   August 16th, 2008 11:20 pm ET

obama is an honest politician.of course he gave credit where credit is due.this is what makes him appealing.we dont like being lied to,anymore.too bad that we had to waste so much time fighting a war based on lies, that bush could not tackle the real issues facing us ,today.iraq was such a waste......and for what?freedom?we are less free than we have ever been and its frightening to hear bush wanting to expand domestic spying on americans.i hope he leaves office before thats ever allowed.

cal   August 16th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

practically every question was a curve ball for obama. this was a pro-republican audience.

the only way mccain could have messed things up is if he fell off the stage.

Gaby   August 16th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

Correction yes it is a curve ball from Obama.

Gaby   August 16th, 2008 11:04 pm ET

How can you say this is a curve ball for Obama, anybody with enough sense, would know that McCain does not have it, he avoids the questions and continues to dance around the issues, he is never straight forward.

ALL the facts please   August 16th, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Not a curveball thrown from Obama – it was a complete rarity for a Republican to be supporting efforts to battle AIDS in other countries. This is one of Obama's platforms that should've been addressed in more detail by Warren.

are you serious?   August 16th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

Crowley – You're awfully "staccato" this evening.

By the way, Keanu Reeves called. He wants his "Whoa" back.

Desmond Sequeira   August 16th, 2008 10:31 pm ET

Giving credit where credit is due.

Ratgurl   August 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

Just because Bush has the lowest approval rate of nearly all time doesn't mean EVERYTHING he did was bad. Obama can give credit where it's due. It's called acknowledgment.

Independant Thinker   August 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

This was a VERY enjoyable debate.

The style was crisp and clean.

There should be more like this one.

Jim   August 16th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

Obama has previously said good things about Bush's AIDS effort

Anonymous   August 16th, 2008 9:17 pm ET

Crowley, Obama praising Bush on AIDS is not new.

MD   August 16th, 2008 9:08 pm ET

This is stupid CNN. Can't find anything better to put in here?

Joe   August 16th, 2008 9:07 pm ET

You cannot just condemn a policy soley from it's source...a good policy is good policy.

To be able to recognize that is admirable in any candidate..and is REQUIRED from a good president..not just one that pushes party lines.

Dan, TX   August 16th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

Pity Candice doesn't pay attention to the news. I've heard Obama praise Bush on handling AIDS a number of times. You should hire a more competent reporter.

Rashawn the leftist like President Obama   August 16th, 2008 9:02 pm ET

Where is John's lapel pin?

TheTruthHurts   August 16th, 2008 9:01 pm ET

That's because Obama is looking at the facts – No matter who they favor.
