From

(CNN) - Interesting that McCain brought up the issue of his own personal failings, in light of the recent John Edwards scandal. He never quite acknowledges it, but he is the one who mentioned it.

Nadine Greene   August 17th, 2008 1:46 am ET

Very interesting how CNN and the other news media has not dealt with this ugly issue of immorality and John McCain. He has no respect for marriage and family. Well too bad for present wife, "WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND". If he can easily cheat on his first wife with Cindy, he's bound to cheat on present wife. Who should trust a dishonest person. McCain is a habitual liar. He will have to answer for all his indiscretions. It's understandable why he not comfortable talking about his religious beliefs.

Becky Montgomery   August 17th, 2008 1:38 am ET

Yes, he mentioned his failing in the shortest answer of the night. ZZZZoom over to the country's failings without saying that he cheated on his ill wife and left her, which even Edwards didn't do.

Sorry, I am not impressed.

Anonymous   August 17th, 2008 1:22 am ET

McCain mention his x-wife out of guilt knowing he was a cheater!
(with affairs before/after Cindy). Then that fling with a lobbyist came out but not persued. Just as Edwards, I bet there was more truth to it. But it seems the media is afraid of McCain and avoded reporting it. Call it a Senior Citizen's special treatment. Edwards denied it also..............................now look where he's at? Confessing!

nelda   August 17th, 2008 1:11 am ET

Did anyone notice that McCain didn't add more to that line? Why didn't he mentioned that he cheated on his wife and married a heiress 5 weeks after the divorce?

Carl from MI   August 17th, 2008 12:52 am ET

He cheated on his wife and dumped her for a VERY wealthy Cindy.

Why is that SO hard for him to admit in public at a time when he's being so 'personal'??

Christian   August 17th, 2008 12:32 am ET

He opened the door. He cheated on his wife too. He will not get my vote.

Barbara - 65 yr old white female in NC   August 17th, 2008 12:30 am ET

HA – Keating 5 wasn't one of his failings? Bull. No morals at all except in his pandering stump speeches.

His own mother sued his ex-wife – a cripple – for heaven's sake !! The entire family is rotten.

aware   August 17th, 2008 12:28 am ET

McCain is straight forward, authentic and humble. And, these are all attributes Obama lacks!

McCain 08! :)

TXMomof2   August 17th, 2008 12:26 am ET

Okay, so he opened the door. I am waiting to see if someone actually walks in and asks him why the failure of his first marriage was a moral failure on his part. If marriages fail without someone having done something to cause that failure, it is just a tragedy. For it to be a personal moral failing is an admission that the person in question committed some sort of immoral act to cause the marriage to breakdown (like cheating on a disabled wife with a much younger, much richer woman). So friends in the media, are you going to pursue that one, or just let it drop?

CB   August 17th, 2008 12:23 am ET

Obama spoke from a personal faith base level and from his heart. John McWar did nothing but campaign and spoke of war and every answer.

Obama 08

Wendy   August 16th, 2008 11:59 pm ET

John McCain is going to have to mention it alot more in the future. He's going to have to explain what type of morales he has to leave a crippled wife behind for a wealthy young model. What kind of man is he. What kind of homewrecker did he take up with? How could she show her face in public and actually sneer down at others.

Brian, Pittsbrugh   August 16th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

He mentioned his "first marriage", but didn't say why it ended. He answered quickly and moved on, avoiding the real issue. And you're giving him credit for it. Why can't the media talk about it? Even in your post, you don't say it... ADULTERY. McCain cheated on his wife.

Is there some secret media pledge to not say it?? McCain CHEATED ON HIS WIFE. Why is it impossible to talk about in the mainstream media??

Kris K from CA   August 16th, 2008 11:50 pm ET

McCain has a life time of examples of his poor decision making....time after time he has hard luck stories to share....and he is a priviliged kind of guy...he has no understanding of the regular citizen and doesn't care to...he only has his own vision and does not relate to other points of view. He is very limited in his"world view" and that is scary of all of us normal people. For example, I am pro-life (for me) but feel all women should have a CHOICE.

Every Wilson   August 16th, 2008 11:48 pm ET

John McCain was on his game, he was irreconcilible on every issue, uncompromising, thuwart, conventional, alienistic, hard, symbol of the old guard, partisan, old politics, old washington, old way of thinking, nonfuturistic in thinking and nonintrusive as usual. But, he wants Americans to believe, he is diplomatic, a communicator, thinker, non-partisan, compromiser, thoughtful and caring. He is dangerous for America and the World! As a leader whose idol is Ronald Reagan and Teddy Roosevelt Whose big stick, cowboy policies helped to shape republican ideology, I am strongly concerned that if he is elected, their will be less diplomacy and numerous Wars and conflicts around he'll draw America into, to support their political platform. We have that already with George Bush, and our country is reeling due to supreme egotistical, arrogant, lone ranger mentality. The hundreds of hours of rehearsal paid off for McCain today, he did a George Bush on America again today! When will we wake up! Look like its back to the future again! Will we ever learn! Will this country ever begin to realize World War III will happen when we have leaders wh are ardent uncompromising agents their ideology who will forcefully succuumb every country in the world if possible to our countries detriment.. America Notice John McCain did not confess to Adultery or abandoning his invalid wife! Barack did confess to mral failure of drugs and alcohol! What a difference!

lul   August 16th, 2008 11:47 pm ET

mcCain is fit for story teller not for a president ! insead of answering the question , oh boy he just tells a whole lot of story. MCSTORY!!1

Kris a Dem from MCcain land   August 16th, 2008 11:40 pm ET

I think that was very good of MCcain to be truthful on a personal level like that. He is human like everybody else. I disagree with his stances but he is human. I understand.

CNN Basis Analysis...   August 16th, 2008 11:38 pm ET

Why is his own pesonal failing not mention in this article. The failing he mentioned was his first marriage and why is this article buried in the articles about Barack Obama's comments.

CNN, I enjoyed the coverage of the forum, but I have to say that there are hints of CNN being basis in the analysis.

Republican for Obama   August 16th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

McCain stopped short. He didn't admit he commited adultery with Cindy. He changed the subject. Couldn't wait to get back to another story.

Larry   August 16th, 2008 11:34 pm ET

All of a sudden he gets reflective about the issue now. He has faith that the press won't dig on this one.

Cupper   August 16th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

Yeah, he jsut doesn't want you to know the rest of the story.

That he turned his back on his wife after she was seriously injured in a car accident, committed adultery, and left the mother of his children when he found a younger, wealthier woman. (This is all public record, not induendo)

Hmmm...these are nice family values. Evangelicals should be very proud!

Worse, McCain didn¹t tell the truth about this in his own memoir. McCain insisted that he was separated from his first wife before he began dating his second wife. That¹s simply not true.

McCain also insisted he¹d been divorced for months before remarrying. That wasn¹t true, either. (In fact, the LAT reported, ³McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first
wife.²)

Nicolette   August 16th, 2008 11:21 pm ET

Tonight was a staged set-up for McCain. He said everything the conservatives wanted to hear. That crowd was for McCain. McCain is completely one sided and unreasonable. Obama is what this country needs, because these issues, they are gray areas. The whole country is not a country of just evangelicals, and McCain, as well as the evangelicals, NEED TO GET THAT THROUGH THEIR THICK SKULLS!

Obama Supporter VA   August 16th, 2008 11:21 pm ET

McCain never acknowledged his failings... he acknowledged his marraige as a failing.

McCain – committed adulty, left a wife and small kids ( that do not interact with him, today), and married his mistress. He devastated his children and more than likely left his wife feeling rejected and worhtless.

His short comings were never addressed.

All I got from McCain.... especially the comment about why he wanted to be president was
1.) If you can't get your own healthcare the heck with you
2.) If you can't educate your kids, then He has the perfect job for them... SOLDIER to fight in the wars that he will begin and die before they every end

And the right says BArack is the Antichrist... I think the right needs to check the man who rarely mentioned GOD, Christ or any of the precepts and foundations of the Faith he claims as his. All his answers were self edifying

Funny .... Barack who is humble and says he relys on God.... The evangelicals shun.

I am glad I am not an evangelical, but a Christian, a follower of Christ and not politics.

Janice Crowley   August 16th, 2008 11:09 pm ET

Mccain didn't go into detail on any of the questions. It was an ordinary stump speech or campaign. Mccain wasn't personal because he didn't go into detail on his first marriage or why it was a moral mistake, he didn't go into detail on his faith belief but he spoke for 10 minutes on Russia or Iraq. It was Obama who made refferences with his mom and grandmother that we havent heard before unlike Mccain with the same old story with a twist. Mccain doesn't want us to know who he is and why he stands for what he stands for. Why?

ice mike   August 16th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

What are you talking about, Bill? Maybe CNN could, I don't know, DO A STORY ABOUT IT?

We got two weeks worth of "Sweetie-Gate", but McCain leaves his disfigured first wife for a rich young blonde, and we get nada.

DR. YES   August 16th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

that has already been out and he is well aware of it.not necessarily very revealing.its common knowledge these days.

cal   August 16th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

mccain did not talk of his own personal failings. what kind of hack reporter is this?

mccain briefly mentioned he failed in his first divorce, without citing any details what so ever. nor did he mention cheating.

he immediately changed the subject after acknowledging his divorce and began talking of the country again.

how about some real reporting.

Love Huckabee   August 16th, 2008 11:04 pm ET

That's because he's married to his mistress.

ALL the facts please   August 16th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

What was the McCain scandal with his first wife? I didn't hear about it.

BKoi   August 16th, 2008 11:02 pm ET

Perfect forum for McCain to excuse his behavior! He knows people are talking about his indiscretion with another woman and true to his Bush doctrine, he launched a preemptive strike!! The guy is such a hack! People are going to fall for his rah rah rah BS ! AGAIN! This is such foolishness, no wonder voters put Bush back in a second time! Remember the old saying "you can fool some of the people............."

Norma   August 16th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

John McCain just said enough to get the heat off his back from the blogs about his affair with Cindy while still married to Carol. He wants people to think he has been unfront and forthright when actually he has not been. He committed adultry which is a sin – a 10 commandment sin.

mb, Baltimore, MD   August 16th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

What surprising reference are you talking about, bill?

Manyara   August 16th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

I would have liked to hear McCain expound upon his failed marriage. The way he answered the question made it seem like his marriage simply didn't work out. Indeed, it didn't. However, he was a major reason it didn't work out. Having an affair with Cindy and asking his wife for a divorce while she was recuperating in the hospital from a major accident, is something I think the American people need to know about McCain. We know that Sen. Obama experimented during his teens with drugs & alcohol so I'd like to know more about McCain, what he learned from the experience and how it impacted his life. I was very disappointed that I didn't hear more.

linda in illinois   August 16th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

What he didn't say is the condition he left his wife in when he was having an affir with Cindy. Then to have his mother sue her is unbelievable!!!!!!

Joyce   August 16th, 2008 10:27 pm ET

He never told the entire truth about his first marriage. He did just as he has done about his life, pretend he is like everyone else and not tell the entire truth. He rambled and never told how he left his first wife for the one he is married to now. How he left the first for the second. He never gave the truth about what occurred.

John McCain is not an honorable man.

Pete Nicely   August 16th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

What was the reference?

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

McCain mentioned his failed first marriage but the whole truth needs to be exposed just like Edwards.

McCain:SmallWeakCowardlyMan OffersMoreOfTheSame TearsOthersDownToBuildHimselfUp   August 16th, 2008 10:21 pm ET

It's really too bad that the media hasn't talked about this being more than a failure. It was abandonment, pure and simple, of a disabled woman for a younger RICH woman (after MANY other dalliances) who John McCain obviously had no problem defining although he artfully (?) dodged the question about wealth during the forum. Hmm .. I wonder why? What a low human being he is.

JannisG from Savannah, GA   August 16th, 2008 10:19 pm ET

In my view, John McCain never directly answered most of the questions. I do not think McCain's personal stories for most of the questions were adequate. I prefer a president who is looking forward rather than one living in his own history.

Jim   August 16th, 2008 9:55 pm ET

James Dobson brought up the adultery months ago. Dobson seems to forget about asking and receiving forgiveness from God.

oddjob   August 16th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

If marital fidelity is going to be a campaign issue it would be more pertinent to ask McCain if he's been faithful to Cindy, especially since there's some online testimony already indicating he refuses to answer that question.

Mike in Cali   August 16th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Senator McCain "seemed" to dump his wife of many
years for a hot little blond number half his age.
Yes as we grow we learn and past transgressions
should be forgiven but at least be fair about that.
Forgive Obama his pastor, and forgive McCain
ditching his wife.

Peace

Annamae   August 16th, 2008 9:43 pm ET

Did he feel it to be a moral failing when he committed adultery with present wife Cindy, and then divorced crippled first wife Carol who stood by him for five and a half years while he was a prisoner of war? I wish Rick Warren had asked him to expand more on this moral failing of his. How can the religious right accept a man who has committed these awful moral failings?

young, gifted and black   August 16th, 2008 9:29 pm ET

i feel that Pastor Warren should have pressed him further on this issue like he pressed obama on abortion...

michael   August 16th, 2008 9:23 pm ET

John, was being transparent. Why bash him?

Keith   August 16th, 2008 9:21 pm ET

His response to his own personal failings was honest, direct and sincere. Period.

Keith   August 16th, 2008 9:20 pm ET

It only took the first ten minutes of the interview – McCain has my vote.

women for obama   August 16th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

YEAH HE SAID IT IN THE CONTEXT AS IF HE ONLY DIVORCED HIS WIFE, NOT GIVING ANY NOTION THAT HE CHEATED ON HIS WIFE BEFORE HE LEFT HER, NOT THAT HE COULD NOT ACCEPT THAT THE WOMEN WHO WAITED FOR HIM TO RETURN FROM VIETNAM AND BORE HIM THREE CHILDREN WAS NO LONGER PHYSICALLY BEAUTIFUL DUE TO HER ACCIDENT, NOR DID SHE HOLD THE CONNECTIONS AND MONEY TO BUY HIM A POSITION. EVERY QUESTIONS HE HAS TO ANSWER IT IN THE POSITON OF THE VIETNAM WAR...WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAITH AND HOW WILL THAT GUIDE YOUR DECISIONS HERE AT HOME AND INTERNATIONALLY.

mike   August 16th, 2008 9:16 pm ET

CNN never amazes me how quick they are to create a negative headline for anything leaning right. It there was a Truth detector for new stories, CNN would fail miserably. Fair and balanced are real concepts, not
conservative values.

Cindy   August 16th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Cause he knows it's on everybody's minds, so he might as well break the ice first?

Wade   August 16th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Gosh...McCain only talks about war. This is disturbing. Is that the only thing he knows? Bill Schneider and Candy Crowley please help me get the answer to this question. Thanks.

Jacklyn, NC   August 16th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

So CNN, where's the story? What is his failings: Did he cheat on his first wife to get Cindy McCain? While he's at it why don't he mention the Keating five banking scandal that he was a part of? If this was Obama, CNN will be killing this story over and over and over and OVER again to try to to crucify the man.

TheTruthHurts   August 16th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

I'm for Obama, but I don't McCain has been dodging his failings in his marriage. He hasn't admitted cheating with Cindy before the divorce, but he has said he sucked as a husband and was selfish. Good for him. Just because I'm Obama, doesn't mean McCain is evil – just WRONG.

get a life   August 16th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

Wish that nut would quite calling me his friend. I'm not. He's an idiot.
