Colorado is a toss-up state, according to CNN's latest Electoral Map.

(CNN) – Less than a week before the Democratic Party convenes in Denver to officially name its nominee, a new poll shows the typically-red state of Colorado shaping up as a battleground in the November election.

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, leads his rival Sen. Barack Obama by 3 percentage points – 44 percent to 41 percent – in a new Rocky Mountain News/CBS 4 poll. Fifteen percent of those surveyed said they were unsure about their choice for president.

The poll of 500 registered voters conducted August 11-13 has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points, making the McCain-Obama race a virtual tie in Colorado.

Why are so many Obama supporters being so crude by name-calling Senator McCain as McSame, McShame, McComplain, or McBush? Is this the general intellect level of his supporters, unable to sustain a coherent argument on facts? I wonder how they would react if Republican supporters began referring to their candidate as OSAMA.

Tristan   August 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Yes America, keep turning blue for Obama!

As someone from outside the States, I can say that the whole world is watching America. Obama is the candidate that will drive America into the 21st century with the rest of the world. If McCain wins, it will be a disaster not only to America, but to the world. We've seen how he reacted to Russian-Georgia in a very dangerous way that could possibly catapult the world in another WW. All McCain knows is war, that is why he is so direct. Obama goes "um, uh, uh.." because he is a thinking man, he is a man who can certainly think of ways to make America and the world better, not jumping into conflict like McCain would.

The world is watching...

Chris   August 18th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Lisa,
Obama won, get over it. Hillary lost because Obama was the better candidate. He is doing well in places like Colorado because the people are seeing what a disaster the Bush administration was, and are looking for a viable alternative, which they have found in Obama.
Or, are you just frustrated because McCain would have trounced Hillary in Colorado?

Joel   August 18th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Every time he flounders it is because it was "rigged" because Obama is perfect, remember?

On a more serious note, the other night reflects Obama's biggest fault as a candidate (besides no experience) – he is great in prepared speeches but is not very good when put on the spot. Hillary wiped the floor of him in their debates and I imagine McCain will do the same. There is a reason why he wanted as few debates as possible – he just isn't good at them.

Down with Obama   August 18th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Obama will NEVER win in November...lets elect Hillary!!!!!

She is the only Democrat that can win!!!

rightytighty   August 18th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

15% unsure..

That's my response every time! Same for all my Republican friends. It's our way of laughing at your polls, and liberally predicted election results. Works everytime.

Ha Ha!!

The problem, CASUAL OBSERVER, is that you are a casual observer. If you used your brain you will see that the white haired dude will continuous us down the same path of destruction and economic disaster that the existing idiot has!

GaVoter   August 18th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Georgia is pink?

That alone sums up this poll as being off...

Susan   August 18th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Since McCain wants their water, and will take it by force, Colarado is seeing red and turning blue towards OBAMA!

Frank from Peterborough   August 18th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Right now John McCain is sabre rattling and threatening Russia and advocating having them removed from the G-8. Only a total moron can believe Russia is going to be bullied by the U.S. so people better wake up or you'll self destruct if these war crazy old fool ever gets elected.

smile!!!!!   August 18th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

the "conservative" preacher said that mc c was already at the room without TV and radio.......falsehood!.....about 35 minutes later he arrived at the church......all the while listening to what was going on with Sen. Obama.

So obviously, mc c´s BIG blunder was to answer the questions before they were finished.....how could this fraud have answered the questions on such a fluid way which is not his strength? go figure it out........LISTENING LISTENING....

and why bring the subject of WAR and NAM again???....he is a failure, a disgrace and a hypocrite......not to be trusted ever

Jeremy   August 18th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

This poll originally came out last week. Colorado would be the third state to go red in over a week. The states that have gone red over the last week are Nevada, Virginia, Colorado, and most recently Ohio.

Real Clear Politics has the estimated Electoral College Map at

Obama – 275
McCain – 263

Obama just needs to screw up in Indiana, Minnesota or some other state.

Go McCain!

Don   August 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

There are some stupid people here i tell ya. Obama is not a god contrary to what people may think. He has good days and bad days like all of us and saturday was not good. Stop saying the forum as rigged, where is the proof.

Clinton Supporter   August 18th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

I hope Obama and company get the biggest surprise of their lives.

What arrogance! As far as Barry is concerned, we don't need elections in America any more. Next he'll crown himself.

"The One."

Bulldog   August 18th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

i sure hope those Colaradoians who have there head stuck where the sun don't shine get their act together and realize that McCain and his team are almost identical to the Bush and Cheney teams of 2000 and 2004. If they choose to vote for another Bush/Cheney administration like McCain is offering they are a bunch of morons.

Eric   August 18th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

I do not believe any of these polls for the simple reason that they don't add up. Obama is leading in basically all categories, young, women, workers, highly educated, AA, hispanics, but we should believe it's a tie. They're only a bunch of hormonal PUMAS, old folks scared of change, oil tycoons and racists who don't see how confused, unstable and dangerous McCain would be for the country.

john   August 18th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

It is time to have a healthy, young and knowledgeable person to lead this great nation. How on earth should we choose a 72 year old dude who has not accomplished anything apart from being a POW. When did we start rewarding failure. Just because he was shot down does not means he has experience. He has no experience of winning but rather experience of failure. Could not even managed his marriage life.

Obama 08/12 !

DJ Los Angeles   August 18th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Thanks in part to a lot of transplants to CO from more liberal states, especially California.

Cynthia   August 18th, 2008 2:03 pm ET

The one thing that amaze me is people are always talking about the small lead that Senator Obama has in the polls. Senator McCain just like Senator Clinton is a household name and should be leading in all the polls and with larger numbers even with the fact the we in been in a poor Republican Administration for almost 8 years. I think people haven't really been paying that much attention to who is running and will start to watch things more closely now that we are in general election mode now. When they take in to consideration the Iraq war that we should have never been in in the first place, gas prices, hard economic times, etc. – they should ask themselves how did we get here? – as I see it a Republican Administration.

jimmy   August 18th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

NOT SO FAST ON THE " OBAMA LINE : "I WILL WIN" STATEMENT.
JOE BIDEN AS VP RUNNING MATE WITH OBAMA IS NOT THAT STRONG . EVAN BAYH IS A BETTER CHOICE, BUT HE SUPPORTED HILLARY AND THE OBAMA CAMP JUST WILL NOT PUT HER ON THE TICKET NO MATTER WHAT.
BUT THE RECENT FORUM WITH BOTH OBAMA AND MCCAIN IN FRONT OF A LARGE AUDIENCE AND TELECAST MORE WIDELY ACROSS AMERICA THAN THE MAJOR NETWORKS EVER DID, GAVE AMERICANS TO RETHINK THEIR EVALUTIONS AND SCUTINIZE EACH CANDIDATES CREDENTIALS VERY CLOSELY (MICRSOSCOPICALLY) AND DECIDE. AND WE AMERICANS WILL DO THAT IN VIEW OF THE HUGE ISSUES AT STAKE IN THS ELECTION FOR PRESIDENT THE REV RICK WARREN DID AMERCIANS A GREAT SERVICE. FOR OUR COUNTRY.

Irma in North Carolina   August 18th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

So you people out there in Colorado, want four more years of Bush policy. Go ahead and vote for Mccain who commited Adultry. He may as well pick Willy or Edwards for his V P, they also commited adultry is this the kind of people you want running the White House.

sickofpolls   August 18th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

So a poll of 500 people who have land lines is really representative of a state of millions? Is anyone else sick and tired of these polls?

Anonymous   August 18th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

The choice is so simple:

For millionaires: if you want lower taxes, vote McCain, if you want higher taxes vote Obama

For the 95% of Americans who are not millionaires: If you want HIGHER taxes vote McCain, if you want a $1000 tax cut, vote Obama.

Just look at ANY non-partisan analysis. That's just the way the numbers add up. It's not a matter of opinion.

dittohead with forty names   August 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Obama by landslide.

Nate   August 18th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

McCain has the lead there then because conservatives don't vote in polls as a rule.

Jeffer65   August 18th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Oooo, they asked 500 people in this poll. What a joke.
If McCain wins, America loses.

A FRIENDLY ADVICE TO OLD MAN JOHN McCAIN.
How could someone like John McCain accuse any person about "FAILURE OF JUDGEMENT" ?
Judgement failure ? John McCain was wrong on Afghanistan, on Iraq, On Iran, on North Korea, on Pakistan, on Georgia, on former President Parvez Musharraf and on villain President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili.
John McCain was also wrong on Veterans Benefits and the Department of Veterans Affairs. For the last 25 years or so, John McCain didn't have the time to reform and help the Veterans ? Now John McCain says he will reform the Department of Veterans Affairs, IF, and only IF he is elected. Not bad old man John McCain, may be by the time you are 100 years old you will make the same promise of reforming and helping the Veterans, not bad.
According to the Old Man John McCain probably he doesn't know what really "FAILURE OF JEFGEMENT" means.
Do we need to care much about the polls ? We no for sure that this disastrous policies of George Bush will NOT ON FOREVER.

JP   August 18th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Earlier I read Obama saying to his donors "I will win. Don’t worry about that".

What is he going to say on Nov 05, sorry I lied?

Bruce   August 18th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Who would want to be exposed to this constant attack on everything they do or say? Out right lies are put forth as gospel, and time and money is wasted trying to defend against the untruths. Both parties are to blame, but the more I study the attack adds it is clear to see that one is more to blame than the other

Not a man of faith   August 18th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

In the introduction to the "Forum on faith" on tv, it was said that McCain considers himself Baptist, but has never been Baptised. Now McCain says that he has been "saved and forgiven". Will someone clarify this please?
When did he get baptised and did he do it this year? If he got baptised this recently, then he is not really doing it to be truly saved, but only to get the evangelical vote.
If he did NOT get Baptised and LIED that he did, that is disrespectful to God in EVERY religion.

My point is not actually about religion, but rather integrity. It doesn't matter if you're Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, or even Muslim. What matters is if you lie about it, then you have No faith/no integrity at all.

mike   August 18th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

yeah, wait til the convention and then check the polls. That is a boon for Denver and a great choice.

Bruce   August 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

It will be a landslide.

TN FOR OBAMA   August 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Remember Rick Warren said, "We flipped a coin, and we have safely placed Senator McCain in a cone of silence.”

WELL, ISN'T THAT SPECIAL???? Seems McWhite Haired Dude wasn't even THERE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Who called "Heads" or "Tails?"

White haired dude couldn't even make it to the Civil Forum on time.
If McWhite Haired Dude couldn't make it to the forum on time (the most important event of this election to date) how can he be president?

InSane McCain   August 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Saturday was a farce, but people in the real world know that the average person does not make 5 million dollars a year, not even close. And while I know McCain was joking, look at what he jokes about. Cindy made 6 million dollars last year; so McCain can joke about these things.

Barack Obama will get my vote because I, like many Americans understand that he is not the star–his message is.

Matthew   August 18th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Wow, McCain leads by three in Colorado and CNN declares it's "virtually tied." Obama could be ahead by three (or less) and the headline would read "Obama leads in Colorado!"

Stephen in Red Bluff   August 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

CASUAL OBSERVER...do you mean the white haired dude who has called for a renegotiation of Colorado's water pact with the lower basin states?? That guy who wants to take more of Colorado's water so he can help his developer friends in his home state build more housing tracts in the desert??

I guarantee you that if that story gets traction, Colorado will be lost to McCain. And, I guarantee it will get traction once a certain 527 runs its new ad.

John Starnes   August 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

How could ANY state be a "toss up state" with someone so clearly unqualified to lead America running like John McCain? Same folks who voted for Bush.....TWICE?

Ray   August 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Why is it every time Backtrack Obama flounders, it must have been "rigged". he is a loser....period. You can't rig that or fake experience like he is trying to do.

Cindy   August 18th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

This election, the choice is so obvious... McCain is showing himself to be more and more like Bush every day. Will America fall for it again? Are we as predictable, as the Karl Rove / Rush Limbaugh / Fox News type people seem to indicate?

Barack, you knew this fight was going to be tough. Hillary spat it in your face. Stay the course. Stay with the message. Yes, you will win. The Rove/Limbaugh puppet McCain, will not.

Jerry   August 18th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Where do CNN get these polls from, I guess they go in the republican district to get the polls. CNN want you take a poll in Georgia I bet it will be for Obama

Lisa   August 18th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Isn't this the same state that voted for Obama in the primaries? Maybe Clinton was right, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Georgia, North Carolina, these are the same states that voted for Bush. Can we really trust their judgement?

Leslie   August 18th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Debates will finish Obama. If he looks as bad as Saturday night – he will be deemed an idiot...if he beats up McCain, everyone will be distressed seeing grandpa getting beat up by a black man.

Having a black POTUS is a admirable goal – but you libs way overreached this year.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 18th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

The best polls should indicate that McCain runs neck in neck with George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Black and all the others that supported Bush's campaign are now behind McCain's campaign. If voters can't see that then they must all agree with Bush's policies.

InSane McCain   August 18th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

That will change because Barack will win.

McCain left his sick wife and kids when he returned from Vietnam. So all this talk about honor and loyalty is hogwash. How honorable and loyal was he to the most important people in his life–his wife and kids. Oh he's loyal to Cindy and her millions, that one he can be loyal to, but give me a break.

I won't shed one tear for what he experienced in Vietnam, because he came back and did the same thing the Viet Cong did to him, to his wife and kids. He left them in the cold.

If a Democrat could pick up a mountian state, that would be great!
I notice, on your map, that WV is leaning toward McCain. What would happen if Obama picked Jay Rockefeller instead of Biden? They have similar qualifications and Rockefeller is speaking at the convention the same night. Would that put WV in play? And what would that do to some of the surrounding states (Ohio, PA, VA)? Just a thought....

John McCain and Obama are virtually tied in all credible national polls. How all this will translate into electoral votes is anyone's guess, but I'd be very very worried if I were Obama right now. He has managed to lose a very stout lead over the last few months. If the trend continues, he'll be less of an after thought than Kerry or Gore.

This independent will be voting for experience. This independent will be voting for straight talk. This independent will be voting for McCain.

It's a shame the DNC forced the half-baked junior senator on this year's election. I was looking forward to a hard decision, but they made it quite easy for me. Regardless of how pretty he sounds and how eloquently he reads from a telepromter, Obama is an empty suit with empy promises and empty rhetoric. It's funny to watch him try to talk policy without a script to read from.

John McCain's definition of rich was disgusing. He is makes a joke out of everything. Did McCain think the people wouldn't find out he cheated at the debate?

Barack Obama is the one that can turn this nation around. Create jobs, build the economy, fix the housing problems and bring our wonderful military home.

God Bless Barack Obama.

Senator Joe Biden will be the VP choice of Obama but will it help Obama in the election.. Biden does not even know Obama that well
and in view of Obama's very meager credentials and some really questionablem ones..Will Joe Biden be an effective campaigner and attack dog for Obama.? the Rev, Rick Warren forum which scooped the major networks in ratings shoed the American people more than what the Media-darling-coverage of Obama and we think Senator Mccain did far better then Obama at the event . Rev Warren does not endorse any candidate. He did the event for free and rebroadcast of the event is free...Give Rev Warren Kudos for the event.

Denise   August 18th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

The fact that McCain is having a hard time winning states that border his homestate should be troubling to McCain. Obama is doing much better with states that border Illinois.

Terry   August 18th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I watched with interest the conversation between Pastor Warren and the two canidates for president. Regarding the "code of silence", it was clear that McCain knew the questions. When answering one question, McCain said "can we talk about the supreme court judges?". In my opinion at that point, Pastor Warren should have ended the conversation.

In addition, this was a forum for McCain to talk to the conservative base and he did so. In addition when talking about his failures, why did not McCain go into detail about his failed first marriage? Did he cause the failure by cheating on his wife following a major car accident?

I must say that I was disappointed both in McCain and Pastor Warren.

Thanks!

Observer   August 18th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

My guess is that Obama will get a decent bump in the Colorado polls during the Democratic convention, but McCain will regain most if not all of that lead after the Republican convention. I think Colorado could be a back-and-forth fight after that and become an important nail-biter toss-up state on election night.
Having said that, all bets are off if Obama chooses Bill Richardson as his running mate. I think Richardson does well in Colorado, but I don't think there is any way Obama would choose him just to win Colorado.

Obama/Clinton '08   August 18th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

CNN- why aren't you posting that Obama is leading in Alaska (that's right- Alaska) and is tied in super red states like Montana and Virginia and the Dakotas?

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   August 18th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

This is not a surprise given past polls of limited number. It is so close currently that it could go either way. Will the Democratic convention in the state sway people either way? Too early to tell on that item.

Arden   August 18th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

The election isn't over until it is over. With all my heart and prayers I HOPE to see President Barack Obama when the smoke clears, the lies have been proven wrong, and the negative ads are finished. Senator Obama needs to keep on fighting back and letting the american people know that he is for real. I believe once he has announced his V.P. and the DNC and everyone finally starts to show their support (including the Clinton's) Sen. Obama will be on his way to the Presidency.

I read the DNC wants to paint the picture of Obama with an "All American" look. How!!???! Just a few pictures of him where he grew up or lived in Indoneisa, and NOBODY will believe he's All American.
