Limbaugh says McCain should not pick Ridge or Lieberman for VP.

(CNN) — Rush Limbaugh, the popular conservative talk-show host who's long been lukewarm to John McCain's candidacy, warned the Arizona senator Tuesday picking a pro-choice running mate could devastate the Republican Party.

Referencing reports McCain advisors are seriously considering both former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and former Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Lieberman — both of whom favor abortion rights — Limbaugh said picking either of those men would ensure a GOP defeat, and damage the party’s brand for years to come.

"How about some discussion from the McCain campaign about a conservative who can be counted on across the board, who can help lead the country in the right direction?" said Limbaugh. "Who can help rebuild the Republican Party? Lieberman can’t do that — and rebuild the conservative movement? McCain nor Lieberman nor Ridge can do that.”

The comments come amid reports senior advisors to McCain are floating both Lieberman and Ridge's names among key social conservatives in an effort to measure the blowback the Arizona senator will face if he names either man to the ticket. One party insider tells CNN that McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has called several state party chairs and indicated Ridge will be the Republican vice presidential pick this cycle.

Limbaugh said Tuesday that the drawbacks of choosing either man far out-weighed any potential benefits.

"McCain has already seen to it that he can walk across the aisle that he’s the top of the ticket," Limbaugh said. "If anybody is going to attract moderates, it’s going to be the top of the ticket guy. He’s not going to help himself any additional way, he’s going to hurt himself by putting a liberal or a liberal Republican on this ticket, particularly pro-choice.”

Yeah Rush, we wouldn't McCain choosing a 'liberal', god forbid (sarcasm). It doesn't matter though. Senator Obama is going to the next President of the United States. The American people don't want to listen to a grandpa-like figure speak to them and put them to sleep. John McCain is a mirror image of Bush and the American people will realize this during the debates.

Anonymous   August 19th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

McCain has one chance to get my vote… pick Romney as his running mate.

Honker Bob   August 19th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Limbaugh is irrelevant and has been so for some time. Not sure why CNN feels compelled to report this story, except that it makes the dittoheads feel empowered.

The election will be close but Obama will win.

McCain should pick Sarah Palin for VP!!

The far right is so out of touch with reality. Just whom are they going to cast their votes in favor of if not McCain and his chosen VP.

An Independent Hillary   August 19th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

Oh shut up Rush! Let McCain pick who he wants. I may actually vote for McCain if he picks Ridge or Lieberman. Obama has done nothing to secure my vote, and I'm a lifelong Democrat.

Why doesn't he just pick Limbaugh and make it perfectly clear exactly what the Republican party has become.

Pierre G.   August 19th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Can Limbaugh please disappear. I thought for a time interest in his babblings was waining, but the media keeps giving his words weight. The man and his negativity is part of the problem within the Republican Party and U.S. politics. For the love of god, ignore him like you would someone handing flyers at the entrance of metro station and maybe his "influence" will truly be marginalized.

It's a sad day when we the people can't be heard, but the Republicans constantly and consistently listen to the likes of Karl Rove and Rush Limbaugh.

Shame on you, Shame on the Republicans !!!!!!!

So a fat, bald drug addictted clown is advising McCain who he should and shouldn't pick? They ought to chain Limbaugh to Donovan McNabb for a full season.Maybe the NFL can either knock some sense into him or put this miserable excuse for a human being out of his misery!

Harold   August 19th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Liberals…only good at the invective, the name calling. Man, if Mr. No-Answers, loses, as well he should, there will be one hell of a tantrum in this country, not to mention the racist accusations.

But then, you'll all fade away once again.

chris   August 19th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Big picture it's far more important to work on our problems in a bi-partisan way than the zero sum game partisan tactics now so deeply entrenched in Washington. What we've evolved to doesn't serve the American people and the direction of the country well. In fact, it would good a good start to a new direction for both candidates to find a running mate "on the other side". We're a diverse, free thinking, free speech society - we'll never agree on everything - the President that leads with a centrist direction is the most productive - not the polarizing "I win, you lose" partisian style of leadership that's become the norm.

Obama-Junkie, IL   August 19th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Way to go Limbaugh! Since CNN ignored my comments on the McCain camp floating names like Lieberman and Ridge for VP, I will repost here.

THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL MCCAIN WILL CHOOSE LIEBERMAN OR RIDGE!

If McCain were to choose either of them, O'HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN (for the Democrats)!

Josh   August 19th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Wow, you libs are quite entertaining using such "witty" name calling to express your exhaustive opinions regarding Rush (E.G.. "Limoballs", "Rush Baby", "Adolf", "Pig", "fat doughboy", "clown").
This is concurrent with your grade school word plays on McCain (McSame, McShame, McBush, etc…). Combined with your many repetitive catch phrases supporting Obama ("CHANGE," "Yes he can.."), I have begun to wonder where your viewpoints actually lie…

Travis   August 19th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Didn't everyone know?….McWar fired Graham and hired Limbaugh

as his advisor……Please Please Please McWar choose Lieberman

Bayou Joe   August 19th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Marilyn,…I am with you on this one. McCain won the primaries with the
Moderate Republicans and the independents, this is no time to pander to the extremist like Rush and lose the election. Lieberman will guarantee that the Jewish vote and the disenfranchised Democrats vote for McCain. Same for Romney. He does need to stay away from the Huckster and Gulianni.

Jim   August 19th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Now we now why they call it the Clinton News Network. This site is drowning in libs.

Jeff   August 19th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Rush is irrelevant.

Shut up already.

You are going down.

Steve   August 19th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Limbaugh gets hammered by the liberal faithful that frequent CNN on his past drug problem. The same lefty faithful never want to acknowledge their Messiah's litlle problem with cocaine. Rush got hooked as a result of chronic pain. Obama just did it for fun. More great Obama judgement. Obama is an empty suit as witnessed last Saturday night, no teleprompter, no answer. He criticizes Clarence Thomas on his experience!? He isn't sure when human life begins and it's above his pay grade to comment on it? McCain should absolutely listen to Rush. Why? 15 million listeners a week who agree with him.

SV, New Jersey   August 19th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Every time I see this druggy on TV with big cigar in his mouth, I imagine of Bill Clinton using those cubans in white house on Ms Lewinsky. I wish that McBakedPotato chooses Liberman or Ridge thus pushing whole party of Rethugs in Operation Choas. Remember operation Chaos. Rethugs should know by now that operation chaos infact happened to their own party when New Hampshire dems voted for McAlzeimer.

Jonah   August 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Taking political advice from Rush Limbaugh is like taking foreign policy advice from Ahmedinijad. Extremist flagellations and hot air. That's what a golf bag full of Oxycontin will do to your brain.

Mike Philly   August 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Gee, Rush. Did you ever consider that the only way to keep the Republican party alive is to start accepting the ideas of some folks who aren't so small-mindedly conservative? The party is dying for a reason: So much of what it stands for is crap!

nic, bellingham wa   August 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

The "conservative movement" has generally failed because topics like abortion are completely unrelated to the country's economic direction.

What does it take to be a good Republican these days?
It used to be about fiscal conservatism. Now it's social conservatism?

That's why people are running from this party. No matter how hard you try, "family values" don't create jobs or solutions to pressing logistical problems.

The sooner Republicans figure this out, the sooner the rest of the country will start taking them seriously.

Louis   August 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Jim   August 19th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

99.9% of the posts on the CNN political blog are from Rush and McCain-hating lefties…..

john williams san diego, ca.   August 19th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

MEMO to Rush…you are right as usual…Republicans are not happy with someone who has slept with Feingold and Kennedy and his chances are slim right now.

GE - MD   August 19th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh, like his brother (who also made the same racket), is wrong. McCain can win handily without caving in to the theocrat wing of the Republican party. In fact, leaving the theocrats out in the rain may even save the congressional side of the party, too.

Nancy, CA   August 19th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Let's see now, Rush, just how many times have you been married and divorced? Nothing like a good social conservative giving out advice on how to pick a running mate.

Mark   August 19th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Rush lost me when he attacked Michael J. Fox for faking his illness. If you want to listen to a 100 million dollar blow-hard go ahead. Tom Ridge came from humble roots, went to Harvard on a scholarship, is a decorated Vietnam Vet, a Congressman and a Governor. Most Americans remember him from the color codes, but they forget he was the one that got us started down the road with security for the homeland. I consider myself to be conservative but a solution to the abortion issue is not going to come with the election of one candidate or the nomination of one judge.

AgentOfFortune   August 19th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

A 300 pound, thrice divorced, doctor shopping, drug addicted entertainer is giving "warnings"?

Rush, take your meds!

EJ   August 19th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

Good strategy — exclude any candidate that feels similar to the majority of Americans who believe in abortion rights. Typical close-mindedness of the Republican party and the conservative movement in particular, and exactly what Americans are sick of.

gp   August 19th, 2008 5:59 pm ET

He and his opinion can only mess up with poor democrats. He influenced coars of their primaries and still menages to push Clintons forward as only hope to tear down Obama. What a caracter !!!!!!!!!!! Even more disapointing that he can have so much influence???? But republicans are smarter than listening him. It would be wise to get some independants and women on their side .

AMAZING HOW POLITICS WORKS IN AMERICA. YOU STAND ON YOUR PRINCIPLES AND STILL HAVE TO CONSIDER PICKING A LESS THAN DESIRABLE RUNNING MATE BECAUSE THE AMERICAN POPULATION IS SO FICKLE AND SPOILED THAT THEY HAVE TO HAVE EVERY LITTLE THING HANDED TO THEM OR THEY WILL BALK ON ELECTION DAY. POLITICS IN THIS COUNTRY IS A BABYSITTING CONTEST. PET THIS GROUP AND SCHMOOZE THAT LITTLE CLIQUE OR ELSE YOU GET POLITICALLY INCORRECT WHINING. THIS COUNTRY IS THE BIGGEST BUNCH OF WHINERS AND CRY BABIES ON EARTH. MCCAIN SHOULDNT HAVE TO MEDIATE HIS VP CHOICE TO PANDER TO MARXISTS, SOCIALISTS, AND LEFTIST WING NUTS. HE SHOULD STAND HIS GROUND AND GO WITH HIS PRINCIPLES. THIS MAKES A PARTY AT LEAST LOOK HONORABLE AND DEPENDABLE. PANDERING SHOWS A PERPENSITY TO WAFFLE WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN. WE CANT STAND ANY MORE FLIP FLOPPING AND MID COURSE CORRECXTIONS. THE RUSSIANS KNOW WE ARE FAMOUS FOR OUR LACK OF SPINE WHEN IT COUNTS. ALSO OUR LACK OF RESOLVE WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH. HO CHI MINH KNEW IT TOO.

Nick   August 19th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

A McCain/Lieberman ticket would be smart as young Republicans who are far more liberal then the old staunch republicans that are currently in office and running the republican party. I think it is time that America changes, but not as drastic as Obama would like, but a more gradual change with McCain/Lieberman and their years of experiance……Young republicans, I believe, would agree!

Wish you Dems would get off of McCain's blog with the "Who Cares" comment, seems like a lot of people DO.

More and more people every day are stating to see what Obama is made of and are coming over to McCain's side (check the latest polls) so people do care about McCain just not Obama. Obama supporters better jump ship before it sinks. LOL

PS- Why call someone dumb because he expresses his views? This shows the true side of the Dems, thought we lived in America where freedom rules, guess if Obama and the Dems had their way we would be like China.

If McCain by some miracle wins this election, women will end up losing all their rights. Every women has the right to to choose what happens to her. Government should not dictate this right. Saying the women doesn't have the right if she so chooses to have an abortion is the same as saying a women doesn't have the right to say NO to sex or anything else. We do not live in a cult in Texas where the leader say when you have to get married, have sex or can demand any other rights just because he says so. McCain has 1950's thinking. If McCain thinks he can nominate a pro-abort for VP without losing his pro-life base (which, btw, is a larger and more loyal base than the pro-abort counterpoint) he is sorely mistaken. I'm already doubtful that he will be a true pro-life ally once he's in the White House. Naming a pro-abort will signal that's he pro-life in name only, a la GHWBush , and will do nothing substantial to change things in this country.

What happened to "crossing the aisle" or being "bipartisan?"

When democrats do what democrats do, they get slammed by the right for not being "bipartisan."

But when a Republican shows a little nod to the other side of the aisle, he gets bashed for it. Not that I'm a fan of Lieberman or Ridge. But I do appreciate the flexibility being showed by McCain.

keith Franklin, Tn   August 19th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Rush Slimeball….the real voice of any true American….that is of course if you are in love with yourself and have an overbearing ego and just basically delusional.

Rush Slimeball….mutated twin brother of Karl Rove.

I am sure McCain is shaking in his boots to hear ol Oxycontin himself blow.

The more Rush speaks the more people want Obama.

A Dittihead…what is that good for?

Morgan   August 19th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Since when does CNN let the media clowns from the radical fringe be the news stories? Come on- can just anybody who shoots his mouth off for a living be treated as having an opinion worthy of mainstream (aint that CNN?) attention?

Why don't you quote something from a neo-nazi, or the skinheads? Who do they think should be the VP. Or, my South Carolina cousins for that matter. The circulate really funny right wing emails. Shall I have cousin Bubba give you his opinion?

Phyllis/ PA   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Rush, do you really want Obama to win. If not then get off McCains back and start supporting him.

Sam   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Russ is mad because McCain may choose a Pro-life runningmate. He would be just fine if McCain was thinking about choosing a Pro-drugs candidate.

How are republicans able to hold their breath and noses long enough to vote for 4 more years of Bush policies?

And you people call yourselves americans (?) I don't understand…how can you let the country go completely down the tubes? Are you happy that the rest of the world thinks we're idiots and basically laughs at our foolish folly?

Dave   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

> who can help lead the country in the right direction?

Coming from Rush, that's "right" as in fascist, not "right" as in correct, nor "rights" as in freedom from warrantless wiretaps….

Don in Littleton   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Let me get this straight. Rush wants someone who can "…rebuild the Republic party…" If it needs rebuilding, who tore it down? The Repubs controlled congress from 94 through 06 and the White House from 2000 on, and Rush was carrying their water the whole way. And now he wants to be in charge of the rebuilding project? One would think that even "true conservatives" might not be very happy about that.

Unshrub   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Who cares what Rush says, those that listen to him are too stupid to make up their own mind and will vote for a republican regardless.

Bill Tampa   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Go figure. The Republican Party…cowtows to RUSH LIMBAUGH?..A pill popping JUNKIE…What has the Republican party turned to when thry listen to this JUNKIE…….CNN I KNOW YOU WON'T PUBLISH THIS..

Yupik1   August 19th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

McCain could pick Jesus Christ, and he would still lose. Republicans have spent their political capital on themselves, and wasted a opportunity to do REAL good in this country, but blew it big time.

Joyce in Florida   August 19th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Even though I have never listened to Limbaugh, I agree with his statement. Picking either one of those would be a disaster. Leiberman is a total joke and Ridge just scares me. McCain isn't qualified either. I am still voting democratic period. Hopefully Hillary Clinton will become the nominee. I can wish can't I? Can't wait to see what happens during the convention. It should be an interesting and emotional one at that.

My Friends, let me tell you,   August 19th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Rush will retire if we can just get the Fairness Doctrine working again. He cant stand having to tell the truth or sharing time with opposing views.

Roger   August 19th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

This election just keeps getting worse! As if McCain and Obama were not bad enough now we get sucky VP candidates too. I vote none of the above!

Obama Supporter   August 19th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Although I am an Obama supporter I do have one question………..was he high when he said it?

Phyllis/ PA   August 19th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Because of president Bush having low polls ratings, most people thought that McCain did not have a chance. Now it looks like he just might beat Obama. In order to do this he will need the republican base. I do hope that they can be satisfied tha McCain will appoint members of the supreme court to their liken and support McCain. If not Obama will win. It is time to Think - Think - Think. My best friend plans not to vote because of McCain's stand on abortion. She is strongly against of Obama because of his lack of experience and the people he has surrounded himself with in Chicago. If Ridge become the VP, I know that I could convince her to vote for McCain. How many voters feel like my friend?
PS: I also live in PA. As Governor, Ridge was considered good.

If McCain lets someone like Rush dictate his VP choice, then he's a bigger idiot than I thought (and I'm thinking pretty big idiot already).

Socialists for Obama   August 19th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

If a voter wants to vote for a liberal, there is already one on the ballot. Why would a liberal vote for "liberal light," when they can vote for the actual liberal? Further, why should Conservatives pretend to be something they're not?

Conservatism wins everything it's tried. The problem is, too many Republicans are not conservatives. You cannot win elections by "coming to the middle," if you've completely abandoned your base. And you don't "make a bigger tent" by abandoning everything you stand for.

McCain is in a pickle, because he's made a 25-year career sticking his fingers in the eyes of the very people he most needs now to support him. Good luck with that… tell me how that works out for ya.

lp   August 19th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

It's time for the Republicans to once and for all throw Limbaugh and all of his opinions OUT of politics! The party gives him entirely too much leverage and credibility.
McCain should pick whoever Limbaugh is opposed to and begin the burial of Limbaugh. Let him take another Viagra and entertain himself and stop messing with OUR world.

Charley   August 19th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Quite frankly, who cares about the opinion of a washed-out prescription drug abuser anyway?

Rush why don't you go take a half a dozen vicodan and go back to sleep where you belong.

Cynthia   August 19th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Senator McCain is a bully just like Russ and probably won't listen and I think it would be great in this case if he were not to listen and do it to show Russ that he is a bigger bully. Maybe then Senator Obama can easily get into office and get the country out of the mess it is in.

THOSE WHO LISTEN TO LIMBURGH ARE DUMBER THAN HE IS.

Maritza   August 19th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

This was a no brainer, Rush who can be at times a bit controversial only because he is to the right on the issues , has a very broad insight into the politcal scene, he is perceptive in what can happen in this political climate, after having done so well in the faith forum, McCain needs to keep the momentum to gain a lead over the over rated liberal candidate who performed poorly , example , his response to the abortion question " it is above my pay grade" what the hell does that mean? abortion is a heavy serious matter of debate and to respond by an inept" above my pay grade" is laughable and weasel like , It almost seemed painful to answer the question, McCain was strong, confident and explained in great detail his stand on many moral issues , he simply displayed his knowledge and was very honest about his personal experience, Obama seemed at times to ramble on , and much more vague, clearly America saw for itself who is qualified and ready to lead this country.

Liz T, Tucson   August 19th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I am sure Lieberman will be happy to become pro-life in return for being the VP pick. Just like McCain, he comes out with the key-words he thinks his audience wants to hear, and then thinks the American people are dumb enough to vote for him.

Michael   August 19th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Go away Rush. geez man…just go away and leave the nation be. You have had your run, made millions, managed to stay out of jail on drug charges…enough already. Your yesterdays news

There are very intelligent people who listen to Rush. It was so obvious in the primary and even more obvious now that the average democrat only knows how to insult and name call. Democrats don't seem to care about real issues, but they do care about their agendas and handouts.

Mark NJ   August 19th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

It really doesn't matter who John McCain chooses, the end result is that he will be controled by the ultra right wing of the republican party. If any reader has a semblence of intelligence he can easily see that the republican party platform is based on ideolgy not intellectuality. Henceforth, I am dying to see how many of them will follow the Pied Piper off the cliff when the democratic nominee becomes The President of The United States. "THEY ARE ALL RATS"

mello doug New Mexico   August 19th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

What is with white men and pro-choice? I detect abortion however I have spent the majority of my adult life working with children who were not wanted. These men do not want women to have abortions but then do they step up and help care for the children who are not wanted? No they do not! Our institutions and prisons are full of people who were not wanted as children. These conservatives are hypocrites and liars. If they were truly "Christian" they would do a lot more than try to legislate morality. Don't talk to me about Christian ethics I have seen the results all too tragically often.

A pick of Ridge would be an attempt by McCain to lay claim to his 2000 "Maverick" label.

Anytime the incumbant party candidate is running against the current administration … consider McCain's are you better off than you were 4 years ago ad … he wants to show that he is "different"

John's handlers know they need to do this is a big way and trying to defend the old Maverick status is their way to do it.

They think that republican conservatives will hold their nose and vote for McCain over Barack.

The sight of Rush Limbaugh just makes me sick. Rush is a known bill bopper and committed illegal acts to feed his habit and didn't spend one day in prision just like Cindy McCain because he is "so-called" famous.

If you or I had done something like that we would be in prision for at least 5 years. I guess when you are famous and rich you don't have to serve your time.

Most of you people are amazing. Rather than comment on the merits (or lack thereof, according to your point of view) of Rush's comments, you have elected instead to spew your hatred of the man.

Whether I like Rush or not (I don't listen, BTW), I happen to firmly agree with him. The risks in picking a Ridge or Lieberman far outweigh any potential gain. McCain already has enough trouble with Conservatives. Why on earth would he want to poke his finger in our eyes yet again this close to the election? He may not win with us, but he certainly isn't going to win without us.

My personal choice would be Romney. He's not as Conservative as some other choices, but certainly far more so than Ridge and Lieberman. More importantly, he brings some economic prowess to a campaign that desperately needs it.

It is truly sad how people who stake a claim to morality and Christian values can actually listen to someone as hate-filled as Rush Limbaugh. I am a Christian and I am certainly not influenced by Limbaugh, Sean Hannity or any of the other haters - so-called religious right. It is truly sad/tragic when people who claim to be Christians act in the most unChristian-like manner.
