Ridge and Lieberman campaigned for McCain in Pennsylvania last week.
Ridge and Lieberman campaigned for McCain in Pennsylvania last week.

(CNN) – Republican sources tell CNN that John McCain campaign manager Rick Davis and senior advisor Charlie Black have been calling activists to sound out the pros and cons of several possible running mates – including former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge, a choice that could spark major discontent from the conservative base.

Several campaign officials say they do not believe a final decision has been made – though two sources say McCain may have already decided, and told only Davis. One party insider tells CNN that Davis has called several state party chairs indicating Ridge will be the Republican vice presidential pick this cycle – although it is possible that Christian conservatives may be playing up the former governor’s chances in an effort to raise alarm and prematurely kill off his candidacy.

Several conservative activists say they know McCain’s campaign manager has been warned of possible dire consequences for the Arizona senator’s presidential bid at the convention and beyond if he picks a candidate who supports abortion rights.

"If he picks Ridge, the convention blows up, you will have a base completely demoralized,” said one activist. “And it will be viewed that he is ceding the future of the GOP to a liberal Republican. It would be a disaster."

But the same activist also says McCain is unlikely to make that move, pointing to comments by the presumptive Republican nominee that he would most likely have an anti-abortion running mate, and remarks this weekend that he would have a "pro-life" presidency.

People make no sense   August 19th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

McWar is planning on explaining how he was dumb enough to get caught early in his military career, and spent a long war being held captive. Wow what a hero. No guns blazing – shoot your way out of anything – defend America. Just tortured spilling your guts against America. Through diplomatic means he was allowed to live. It's laughable that people consider him a hero and strong on war. He spent his time in captivity. He was flying a plane he was too dumb to know how to fly and got shot down. Maybe if he wasn't a C student he would have been able to learn the technics to manuever out of position and not get shot down. My grandfather flew endless hours fighting in the same war and he came back a *Real American Hero*.

mary   August 19th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Better pick someone smart. McCain isn;t the brightest bulb on the tree. Check out his Naval School ranking – 894 out of 899....... Yes, experience counts. But too scared to take another chance on another Bush...

Confucious   August 19th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I surrendered all original thought when I gave in to Obamamania. Shame on you McSame. You will just choose a war-mongering clone of yourself.

Eddie   August 19th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Quit deflecting the issue you whining Liberals, your argument makes no sense. McCain wants to kill people who want to kill us, you people want to kill innocent lives that haven't been given a chance.

for Obama   August 19th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

The only "surprise" would be if he managed to pick someone who is against all the wars– but how could he ever find one in the Republican party?

dollorbil   August 19th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

What Mc Cain does is not relevent he will not win the election. He could reincarnate Reagan and still not win. He's toast.

We must defeat these old conservative fools. Wake up people look what they have done the last 8 years. And now they have Joe Loserman on there side, thank God.

Its long been said about the Republicans, and its always been true; the Republican care about life in the womb and stop caring about it once its out. The Republicans are against abortions... and food stamps, and school lunches, and funding schools, and health care for children...

RSB   August 19th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Watching McCain throughout this campaign it's obvious he can't or won't think for himself. He waits for Obama to make a move and then he attacks. It wouldn't surprise me if he names a Democrat and a pro-choice VP – Obama will. McCain seems a little desparate at times.

Brent J.   August 19th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Ahhhh, liberal tolerance. I love it.

Dan   August 19th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I can't believe the drama surrounding the VP has lasted this long. I'm surprised no one has said enough already, end the long pageantry contest and begin addressing the issues Americans are waiting for, like economy, energy crisis, who's "winning" the war, etc.
If Mccain becomes Pres. he will be pro-life, but continue the war. It's alright though, he can go to church and be forgiven.

George Raposa   August 19th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I've just spent a month in the States (I am a Londoner) and have followed both camapigns with great interest.
Of course, like most of Europe, I am hoping that an Obama presidency can reinstate America's moral standing in the world. Then perhaps our own country will take note and follow suit.
I whooly endorse Irony's statement above- being pro-life should include the innocent civilians of Iraq and Afganistan as well as the troops of several nations.
McCain supporters I met on my trip to your country seemed to fall into a similar mould- never have been abroad and therefore no perspsective of their own government's actions.
The world is shrinking and isolationism or an I'm alright Jack attitude which are rooted in some moral high ground will see the American empire implode, like the British Empire and every empire in world history.

tony   August 19th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I know obama is relying on the young and dumb vote, but come on even they can't be that stupid, maybe if their man was a shoe in it wouldn't matter, but we could very well have McCain in the white house so who he picks given his age is VERY important

Dayahka   August 19th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

McCain has been bending over and kowtowing to the religious right, so it is highly unlikely that he will stop kowtowing and nominate anyone the religious right (which really is a misnomer, as this is the religious wrong) would oppose.

Moe, NY   August 19th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Who cares? John McCain will not win this upcoming election. Take a look around you people and you can thank the Republicans for the mess in this country. They sold us out in more ways than one!

clara   August 19th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

go mccain go

Vincent   August 19th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I am sick of hearing about the night that changed McCain's life. I have a couple POW friends from Nam who didn't get the same fine treatment as McCain because their daddy's didn't have the same pins and ribbons. In other words, they were blue collar workers who worked to feed, clothe, and house their families.

These men were tortured beyond belief. They came home broken and crippled. They didn't have a parade like J. McCain did and they didn't cheat on their wives.

And they DON'T wear their POW status as a medal.

clara   August 19th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

mccain is going to win no to oboma he has friends i wouldn't want thats whatsa wrong with the media they want oboma and ayres and rev. wright in the white house

John in Mlps.   August 19th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

John McCain should pick Huckabee if we wants a snowball's chance of winning the South. Huckabee is a "good 'ol boy" and is less polarizing among the Christian Conservatives like Romney is.

Rock on John and Huck!

KG   August 19th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I love the way the liberal Democrats jump on a candidate for being "pro-life." I guess for them the alternative is "anti-life?" Funny, how liberal Democrats will protest a war between countries, but will kill an innocent baby at the drop of hat and not think twice about it. So....let's see, which one is more mentally sick?

Susan   August 19th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Everyone one please go to military.com to read a fllow POW of McCains comments. It is insightful and truthful. A must read for everyone who is voting.
As far a Ridge is converned, this man screwed up Homeland Security. He is also pro-choice. The evangelicals will have a fit if McCain picks him, and it will show them that McCain only gives lip service to get himself votes!

California Gold   August 19th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Even if McCain made up his mind he probably forgot. As Jerome Corsi has written about McCain, he's too old. Can't remember Czechoslovakia isn't a country. Can't remember if he voted on a bill. Can't remember he signed propaganda for the North Vietnamese. Can't remember the difference between Suuni and Shiite........

Observer   August 19th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Choosing Tom Ridge would surely sink McCain's chances of winning the election. Not only is Ridge pro-choice, but having served in Bush's cabinet, he's hardly a candidate for change, which people are really craving this time. In other words: go ahead McCain, choose Tom Ridge!

marianna   August 19th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Arnold Schwartzenegger!

The Constitution says a natural born citizen can be elected POTUS. But does not have such restriction for a VP spot. Once elected, Arnold could become a president should McCain resign or fell ill.

Inviting everybody to discuss!

s   August 19th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

WAIT! John McCain as been the GOP nominee for a longer period than Obama and he's till asking others to way in on his potential option!!!!

Are you kidding me?!? This is a decision that should have been weighed a long time ago with different possibilities depending on who would end up as the Democratic choice. Once again we are watching the way McCain would run the country- not organized.

Steve   August 19th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

To McBush, you call Republicans war mongers but its the Democrats who have led the country to more wars in the last 100 years. Check WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam to name a few. I think you need to check yourself before you throw out baseless comments. As far as the VP selection is, I don't think it will be Ridge, I think he has too much baggage.

debra   August 19th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

John   August 19th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

even if McCain picks Ridge, he will have an extremely tough time winning PA, especially if Obama picks Biden who has Pa roots and is well known in the Philly suburbs that decide PA's election.

Texan Pro Lifer   August 19th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

If McCain wants a pro-life presidency, he'll end the war.

Brian, Pittsbrugh   August 19th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

McCain has done everything else to pander to Bush's conservative base. I think he will choose a Pro-Life VP to make them happy, and the media will call it a "surprise", which plays into his maverick image. I'd be happy to be wrong in this case.

WAR IS NOT PRO-LIFE!

Obama '08

Paul   August 19th, 2008 4:38 pm ET

More Obamatrons spouting their usual hate filled vicerage. Makes me proud to be a Democrat listening to these robots and their idiotic, totally lacking in common sense, views. What losers!!!

April Garlow   August 19th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

McBush=Warmonger-
This war was only possible because of the Democrats signing the resolution to go to war. They had the chance to prevent the war but chose to send our children off to kill and be killed, as a political gesture of bipartisanship.Just ask Obama's right hand man Daschle,-he stated exactly that when he was on the morning talk show circuit ,trying to convince the American people what a great thing it was.The Democrats aren't anti-war.

James   August 19th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

The only vialble surprise would be Ron Paul, Ridge or Libermann would not shock me at all.

leslie   August 19th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I see the no brained Obama supporters are out spouting their immaturity again. Shouldn't they be out getting another tattoo, or having some body part pierced? MCCain needs to stop listening to the people that are saying you need to suck up to the radical right. Most people are in the middle. The crazed so called religious right, are going to vote Republican, period. He doesn't need to work for those votes, what alternative do they have? I mean they can't have lowly women making their own decisions about their own bodies, can they? McCain pick someone in the middle if you want to win.

Realistic   August 19th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

It's been said many times and I" say it again, the Obama cult represents some of the most nasty crude people ever. They have no respect for anyone and come November I'll be looking forward to telling them "GET OVER IT!" Your candidate lost and because he ran too early he will not be able to ever run again. And, most especially, you – the Obama cult – have damaged his chances in this election cycle with your hate and disrespect!

Chad, Wisco   August 19th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Chicago Architect   August 19th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Please remember the last time America elected a president they would feel great having a beer with…8 years of despair and decline, not to mention 7 years of war.

McCain makes it sound so great, how he "suffered" in Vietnam, even if other supporting facts say otherwise (Google Songbird McCain).

The only hit Obama has in my opinion is his pro-choice stance, which is mainly party based. McCain recently said that he would be open to a VP who is pro-choice. So this essentially makes them the same in this issue. All the other issues are clearly in Obama's favor so please see McCain for what he really is, an extension of Bush's current administration.

America, please don't buy into whatever McCain's selling, or else Its Bush all over agian.

McCain will be our next president. Obama can get the experience he needs after about 8 more years in the Senate-then I would vote for him. But now McC is too strong, tough and decisive....Obama looks too much like Gore and Kerry-thoughtful, longwinded, elitist....all the things that lost them the elections of recent past, and made blue collar and middle American voters feel they could'nt relate to them.

The left wing loons who profess tolerance, change, diversity, etc. are incredibly cruel, fascist and spout the typical whining mantra of warmonger, Haliberton, McCrook, McFrankenstein! McCain is gaining, thats why the venom. When Obamas' political obituary is written in November this ilk will be jumping out windows in despair. Not to worry about the fall ,as the windows are in their parents basement!!

"John Wayne" McCain is taking "the Suit" to school !

Didn't Charley Black say he was going to distance himself from the campaign? Or was it the Republican base that said he was shameful and should distance himself from the campaign? I remember it was one of them....

It doesn't matter who he picks... McCain will lose this year. Jack Cafferty (SP) just wrote a great article on McCain... something I've been saying for months... which will make all the McCain supporters mad. Unfortunately for them... everything he says in that article is not only true, but backed up by examples of fact. I'm surprised that article hasn't been placed on the ticker. I applaud you Jack!

Does it matter who he picks. At the faith forum he validated himself as a liar when he said "I was trying to listen through the wall" and then we learn he wasn't even near a wall of any kind. When he was suppose to be in the cone of silence. So his trustworthiness is shot. I would guess whomever he picks will share his sense of integrity.

John McCain and Tom Ridge can use "crayons" together and color code the whole world with fear. Remember McCain did say he'd like to study art one day, well Ridge can teach him how to use crayons.

Susan   August 19th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Ridge or Leiberman..........either one is a good choice for Obama, that is!! I am really looking forward to the GRANDPA TICKET of McBush and Leiberman! The only thing I trust McBush to do is to get the USA into another war that we should not be in!!

OBAMA 08

Frank   August 19th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

I think Rudy Guillianni would be a very wise choice.

Don't Vote for McFuddy!!!!   August 19th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Sen.McCrook, Mcfrankenstein, this is some funny stuff on here. I love all the great names that people have created for Mcfuddy. Having said that, aah, aah, WHO CARES!!!!!!!!

Franky   August 19th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

"If he picks Ridge, the convention blows up, you will have a base completely demoralized,” said one activist. “And it will be viewed that he is ceding the future of the GOP to a liberal Republican. It would be a disaster."

Finally!!!! Somebody said it, LOL!!!

But to tell you the truth, they just gotta play the game right. I'm telling you, Senator McCain had a chance after he was the nominee for his party. He had a whole bunch of time!! He shouldv'e worried about what he would do instead of worrying of what he had to do...

wait a minute   August 19th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

McCain/Ridge 2008!

Governor Ridge will be a strong VP choice for McCain.
His economic knowledge, military and executive experiences will be very helpful.
If the conservatives don't like it, they should find a better choice soon.

Al   August 19th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Sorry CNN. As much as you and the rest of the liberal media hopes that McCain picks a pro-choice running mate – aint gonna happen.

McCain's performance Saturday night solidified the Conservative base while Obama displayed his ineptness. The more we hear from Obama in an unscripted exchange, the more I'm convinced that the DNC made a huge mistake in anointing Obama as the presumptive nominee.

Why not?   August 19th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

I guess since the republicans notion of right to life essentially ends at birth, why not Ridge.

not surprised   August 19th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

Come on posters. You can do better than this. Where is the vile and venom? Where is the bitter, nasty, vicious, really ugly comments.

Jim,Atlanta   August 19th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Yep....the Republicans are totally pro-life....until you're born.

Terry   August 19th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

McCain is going to pick a looser like Ridge and Obama is leaning towards a "here's what is wrong with our congress" person like Biden. So much for McCain's "conservative" yea-right credentials and so much for Obama being an agent of "change". HA!

RH   August 19th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Choosing Ridge would really suit doddering old McCain. Go on, John, name Tom Ridge. I dare you.

raleigh nc   August 19th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

who care McCain

Andrew   August 19th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Tom Ridge can deliver Pennsylvania, which could be the Ohio of 2008. The PA Democratic Party’s name is currently mud after their recent scandal, and with our current idiot of a governor continuing to campaign as hard as he can for Billary, the state is ripe for picking. Pennsylvanians look back at the Ridge governorship fondly and would love to see him as VP.

Kristina   August 19th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

McCain may have a "pro-birth" presidency... but there is nothing "pro-life" about that man.

Jags   August 19th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

McBuch=McWarmonger

At least with McCain we will be spending our own dollars on cleaning up what we are in now and ending it as fast as possible. Obama wants to continue spending the dollars on Iraq cause there is no way we will be out 2 years after he is elected plus spend another billion on Georgia!! A place we had nothing to do with! So where is that promise to rebuild our economy? Going to Georgia

Jill   August 19th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

That would be funny. McCain steps up slowly to the podium, taking in the enormous venue before him, and proudly announces his running mate for the highest office in the land, when, er, uh, oops, I mean, I am selecting what's his name...

Or worse, maybe he looks at Lieberman for a cue, and says "Lieberman"!!! (will Lieberman correct him if he does?)

hsmith   August 19th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

McCain needs the base of the party energized if he is to win in November. The only way he will do this is to pick a pro-life VP. Of all the possibilities, Mike Huckabee is heads and shoulders above the rest.

JPCanada   August 19th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

I do agree that Gore should have been the president back in 2000, However I believe that regardless of who was President at the time the current events would have unfolded in the exact same way..ie 911// Iraq War// etc..etc..etc. The power is not the people nor their elected officials

cliff c kirtley   August 19th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

pick the gov of florida, i have 20 bucks on it , bet it 6 months ago,

Texican   August 19th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

The VP is not a make or break situation as it is in the Democratic Party. McCain will not lose the base even if he picks Ridge. The
Right Wing of the Party will never vote for Obama and neither will
Patriotic Americans of both parties and the independents. We love our country too much to turn it over to a Socialist/Marxist Candidate
whose loyalty to the United States is questionable to say the least.

Mccain loses either way even though he will lose the election anyway. Ridge because he is pro-choice (bye-bye base) and Lieberman because he is a boring treacherous individual who has less talent and appeal then your common centipede.

Bobbie   August 19th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I feel sorry for all you people that sit at your computers all day long and look for ways to run down other people. You need to be glad that the war is being done on foreign land and not ours. If Obama does (heaven help us) get elected, you can plan on a terror attack in our beautiful USA.

A "pro-life" presidency? I actually am pro-life...but it's sad that a presidency should be pro-life or pro-choice. Republicans are really pretty sickening.

Jason   August 19th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I truly believe that Sen. McCain will choose Gov. Mike Huckabee. He even mentioned him in the foroum Saturday night with Rick Warren, which McCain did an excellent job in by the way. If McCain really wants to have a real shot at winning this thing – Mike Huckabee is the only pick for him to make!

Raleigh   August 19th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Nothing that McCain, I mean McCon does or would do surprises me! He has taken the no holes barred approch to his 2008 presidential campaign. Jack Cafferty's statements in today's article about McCon being as shallow as "W" are right on the money. It is time for Americans to choose depth and substance over soundbites. Wake Up America!

No matter who John McCain chooses for his VP nominee, there is still no compelling reason to vote for him. McCain has nothing to offer in the way of ideas, vision or plan to set this country on a better course.

JW Mathews   August 19th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Just think! If McCain chooses a "Pro-Choice" running mate, we might actually have a debate on all the other issues of pressing importance, put the right wing "nutcases" out to pasture and get back to a Republican party that was a champion of individual rights and fiscal responsibility. Teddy Roosevelt where are you when we need you? Ditto, Nelson Rockefeller?

Hillarry lost the primary, is the most polarizing figure in politics, has promoted disunity (in both parties and bipartisan efforts),and Republicans hate her so much they would actually unify to whoop her butt by a landslide.

Scott, Wichita   August 19th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

I hate these radical activists. Who cares what they think? They are so far to the right or left, that their ideal candidates can never be elected because the majority of Americans reside in the center!

We NEED a Liberal Republican or a Conservative Democrat president! Maybe then, something might actually get done, because they'd know how to work with both sides!

Evan from CT   August 19th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

I can't believe Lieberman. I didn't believe his talk during the senate race against Ned Lamont, and I can't believe us Nutmeggers were stupid enough to put him back in the Senate. He doesn't deserve it. He certainly doesn't represent our beliefs if he's that close to a Republican.
All I can say is McCain's best bet is to pick a moderate conservative with a pro-life record. The more conservative the VP, the more he'll enable leftist backlash and scare away independents. The more liberal the VP, the more he'll enable the far-right neo-cons to stay at home on election day.

Either way, as long as Obama picks a decent VP that isn't too controversial, I think he wins the VP pick. McCain isn't liked too much by the far-right base anyway, at this point.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 19th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I don't care who it is! I can't, in good conscience, vote for John McCain. He is too likely to put our armed forces in harm's way without just cause. He didn't support the new GI bill and has failed to support 6 of the last 8 military funding bills.

Just like 85% of my military brothers and sisters, I am now a strong supporter of Barack Obama.

Rose   August 19th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

I will never vote for John McCain because he wants to tell the women of America what they can do with their own bodies. I don't care who his running mate is- McCain would be the one who appoints Supreme Court justices for life- and McCain made it clear that Roe-v-Wade should be overturned.

He is going to make criminals out of women and their doctors!

As far as you so-called feminist "PUMA" people, try explaining to your granddaughters someday why abortion is illegal because you were so bitter that you had to vote for someone your knew is anti-choice.

LS   August 19th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

awhhh . . . McCain is trying to make his campaign out to be somewhat exciting for the Republican party.

Too bad – Bush has permanently stained his devastating trademarks on the Republican name and party, nothing really exciting about it at all come to think of it.

Right Helene who cares who Barack Hussein Obama names. Maybe it will be Rezko after all he has economic experience crooked but experience huh?

Maybe he'll name Jeremiah Wright that will certainly help with the blue collar workers huh?

Maybe he name ayers..he's experienced in terrist attacks ...oh wait he is a terrorist. Maybe him huh?

So lay off McCain! Would you want someone treating your father or grandfather with the same type of respect you are showing? I don't think so! As a rule, Obama supporters are the most hateful bloggers I have ever come across. It is sad! If he is your example than no thanks!

Raymond Duke   August 19th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I do not think either one of these guys would help McCain. He needs to pick someone who will deliver a certain region of the country or the possibilty. He does not need to pick a southern person. The south is conservative to moderate and will in no way pick Obama the most liberal person in the senate. The only states in the south that will be even close is the ones with a large population of blacks or students going to college from yankee states or liberal west coast states.

ObamaNation   August 19th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

My friends....McCain's pick will be lame. He doesn't want to pick someone that will overshadow him, so the choices are brought down to low-to-mid bland level. Think about it....My friends....

NotFallingInLine.org   August 19th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

McCain's VP choice will be either Pawlenty or Powell, the former being much more likely and the latter being THE surprise of the century if he were to accept the spot on McCain's ticket.

Either way, poor Barack doesn't stand a chance. The best Democratic Party leaders have already turned him down. Bayh might be able to help him, though he'd still lose, and Biden or Judas would likely decrease his chances of winning even more than they already are.

jimmy   August 19th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN,SENATOR MCCAIN MAY HAVE PROBLEMS WITH JOE LIEBERMAN AS EVERY VOTER KNOWS SENATOR LIBERMAN AND ASKING THE QUESTION: WHAT PARTY DOES JOE LIEBERMAN BELONG TO?

Nick   August 19th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Frankly I don't care who McCain picks because I'm voting for Bob Barr. But Tom Ridge is a TERRIBLE decision because not only will he turn off Christian conservatives, but being a former member of the Bush Administration and the enforcer of the Patriot Act won't win any crossover voters from the Democrats either. He might win McCain Pennsylvania, but I doubt it will help anywhere else, as the base will stay home and Democrats will keep voting for Obama. From a strictly political standpoint, I think McCain should pick either Pawlenty, who is making waves with the argument that the GOP should care more about poverty issues, or Meg Whitman (former CEO of eBay) who will give McCain a demographic advantage among women as well as executive experience.

Danman   August 19th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Ignoring his base will destroy McCain. You may even see a third party "pro-life" candidate emerge.

Ex-Republican for Obama   August 19th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Every one of his VP Candidates further perpetuates his long standing belief in obliterating our constitution and bill of rights. The current administration, endorsed and supported by McCain, has taken every sacred document in America and reduced their value to nothing more then toilet paper.

I'm tired of watching the current GOP using my Bill of Rights and my constitutiion to whipe their A___ses with. We need to take back our country from these tyrannic dictators, we need Obama!

To deny our freedom in the name of security, undermines what our security is supposed to be. America's security is built to PROTECT our freedoms, not deny them. The fix is actually the very thing we need to guard against. Repeal the Patriot Act, it is anything BUT a patriotic law.

Rudy NYC   August 19th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Good.

Picking Romney would be clear indication that McCain is out of touch.

Dan   August 19th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

McCain will pick his speechwriter, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, as VP. While Obama announces his VP pick through text-messaging, McCain will have his veep pick drawn in the dirt.

I don't care what McCain does anymore. He was once my favored candidate, but I was scammed. I thought he was a man of his word, and he's not. I thought he had some wisdom about governance, but he's proven he doesn't. And now he's a plagarist several times over, pulling his policy speeches from Wikipedia and his "personal anecdotes" from Russian writers. There is nothing this man will not stoop to. John McCain served his country honorably as a military man, but somewhere after that was over, he stopped. He says "my friend" over and over, but he's not our friend, you can count on that.

Obama's not experienced enough, in my book, but he's still the best bet out of these two choices. At least he thinks.

Willow, in Iowa   August 19th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Weirder things have happened. But wasn't it McCain's campaign managers that said something like, "McCain is not acting in the best interests of the McCain campaign." So even HE can be replaced. LOL. I don't think it matters.

chris in oregon   August 19th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

I have a surprise:BOB DOLE!! I think he will be an excellent running mate for MC with a Cane.

dave   August 19th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

P.S. Memo to the "religious right:" the GOP will NEVER legalize abortion. If they do they know you will be free to wander politically, so they will always make big promises but find ways to let "those evil activist judges" thwart their efforts. Get used to it.

Remy   August 19th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

McCain's hopes are still dull and a lost cause. Then who cares about his VP who may be another member of Bush & Co?

Ryan, Denver   August 19th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Why not Dick Cheney? The only thing the Republicans can offer right now is more of the same anyway.

Jimbo   August 19th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

No matter who John "Keating Five" McCain chooses, his straight talk sham bus will be running flat. Obama is going to steamroll in the fall. And thank God for that. We need to turn this country around and start bringing back respect to the White House. The end of Bushwhack Buffoonery. OBAMA 2008.

EDW   August 19th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Wow, they are asking the opinion of activist on this decision. Sooo, they haven't got a clue who they want????????????!!!!!!!!!!

J   August 19th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

I so hope McCain chooses Lie-berman.

Cheri   August 19th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

If McCain picks a pro choice running mate the religious right will bury him.Bring it on!!!

Hussein and proud of it, FL   August 19th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

They are all liars. I don't believe it.

Michelle, PA   August 19th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Let's see, Tom Ridge whose claim to fame is the color coded "alert" system and encouraging Americans to buy duct tape in case of a terrorist attack? Pawlenty Who? Or maybe Joe Lieberman, who already helped sink one Presidential ticket in 2004. Decisions, decisions....

RickytheGriff   August 19th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

A "pro-life" president? Oh, does that mean he's not going to blow Iran to bits?

Oh, wait a minute.... he means AMERICAN life. Yeah, right.

Brennan - Seattle, WA   August 19th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

I heard last night that the McCain campaign was saying they would annonce their pick in front of a crowd of 10,000.

So this means that they will either never annonce their pick or they will be paying people to come hear him speak.

The Future   August 19th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

McCain loves everyone! And everyone loves McCain! =)

Anne E.   August 19th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Why doesn't he pick Karl Rove, the sleaze who's really behind all the campaign smear tactics?
Or how about his buddy, Rick Warren, whom I believe allowed him to be privy to all those questions from the "Civil Forum"?
McCain is a stiff, scripted puppet and his veep choice doesn't matter; he won't win anyway.

pat C.   August 19th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

it won't matter.all of them look like they should be rocking out on the porch of some plush retirement home. McCain will never pick romney because he knows romney was the right choice for the american public to begin with. such a shame....because romney would at least put some economic sanity to the other wise war driven ,only thing this old coot can understand and talk about or should i say rave like a lunitic about. he has dribbled so long about his POW days that he can not remember facts from fiction.

jen   August 19th, 2008 3:30 pm ET

Who cares what war loving McNutt does!!!

dave   August 19th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

McCain has no reason to please the "religious right." They have painted themselves into a corner with their obnoxious clinging to one political issue, and there's no where for them to go but the Republican party.

Jason   August 19th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

No. One. Cares.

Karen - Missouri   August 19th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

With all the troubles in this country and around the world, this election is NOT the time or place for single-issue abortion to rule the day. We need a president who will tackle multiple issues, like Obama can, and not just abortion. How ridiculous to pick candidates based on abortion issue when our country is killing innocent women and children in an unwanted war.

Yvonne   August 19th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

The Right is just blowing smoke. They know they have nowhere to go if McCain picks Ridge. As a loyal Obama supporter, I hope he doesn't pick Ridge because that would put Pennsylvania in play. But it would be smart because the religious right doesn't have a choice. It's McCain or bust.

HUM!!!   August 19th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Ridge and Lieberman campaigned for McCain in Pennsylvania last week.....Davis has called several state party chairs indicating Ridge will be the Republican vice presidential pick this cycle I FLAT DO NOT CARE!!!

proud army and navy mom   August 19th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

please pick ridge, so I can watch the repugs faint from the injustice of someone actually supporting a woman's right to choose. How dare they?

i wish he picks hillary, she's already doing his dirty work. backstabber!

Shawn   August 19th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Huckabee 4 VP

anon   August 19th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Now are you PUMAs and women convinced he will do away with women's rights?!?!

Scott L   August 19th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

Man if he picked Condi Rice, it would be a done deal.

He won't though, she is too aligned with Bush. Plus if I was her I would want to sit on a beach sipping Mai Tais, kind of like Obama does.

tedious898   August 19th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Tell me which candidate is most hated ? Barack. Why..because he's African American and intelligent. Which candidate receives more threats? Barack. Why...because he's AA and intelligent. Let's name the groups of haters. ...the current WH, McCain camp, Puma's, Hillary camp, Notfallinginline, and every pointy head / white sheet wearing trailer resident in america. I'd also say Barack receives more death threats than any of the candidates. I'd bet my small paycheck on that.

So please Hillary supporters quit acting more ignorant than your sub zero IQ level indicates. No one cheated or mistreated you or your candidate. Try being AA for just a day. Better yet ..pay Hillary's debts

Linda from Prescott AZ   August 19th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

whooppee and who cares.

kayla   August 19th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

IT WONT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE WHO HE PICKS, HE WILL STILL LOOSE. THE REPUGBLICAN EMPIRE IS CRUMBLING.

Anonymous   August 19th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Since when would something McCain said prevent him from doing the complete opposite?

Marilyn   August 19th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

McCain needs to stop worrying about the Christian conservatives. It isn't like they would vote for Obama if McCain ticks them off!! What he should be doing is trying to get the votes of us moderate Democrats who will not be voting for Obama. If he picks an anti-choice, ultra right-wing conservative most of us will not vote for him either. We'll stay home and let Obama win by default.

Helene   August 19th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

Who cares who and when and how McCrook is chosing another gang member. Tom Ridge or Judas Lieberman ...

spencer Mohead   August 19th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

The hotlink said Obama gives shoutout to VP. This article is about McCain. please adjust it.

A C-Span Junkie   August 19th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

If McCain is tacking to the center majority of voters he could win with Ridge, however if he is a Party man first and a statesman 2nd or 3rd, well nice to see ya hate tobe ya.......;-)

Reality Check Richmond Virginia   August 19th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

god forbid Ridge is on the right side of the choice issue. The GOP is scary.

Voting Obama   August 19th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Lieberman is a racist idiot. Who cares...

Denise Groves   August 19th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Who cares, he will not win in Nov.

Gorbashov - Long Beach, Ca.   August 19th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

Why not pick Romney he is Pro-Choice and Pro-Life................depending on the week.

Perfect fit for McFlip!

T GUY   August 19th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

MCWAR WILL LOSE ANYWAY NO MATTER WHO GETS PICKED.

OBAMA...........08

Joe Kiloz   August 19th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

In the end, FEW WILL CARE WHO THE VP TURNS OUT TO BE. More

importantly, McCain is seeing the tide turning in his favor on a number of

fronts. Most importantly, the recent debate in Saddleback showed him

in control, well within mainstream America on the issues, and absolutely

polished when confronting the most difficult issues. In short, VERY

PRESIDENTIAL.

ChicagoJosh   August 19th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

So basically, when it comes to the most decision of McCain's campaign, he still has no clue what he's doing.

Sounds like how he's been running the rest of his campaign.

Oh, but I'm sure he'll do better with our economy.

Clinton Supporter   August 19th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Well, this will be interesting. Watch out if Obama picks Biden, ladies and gentlemen.

Do any of you Obama fans recall that Biden WAS RUN OUT OF THE 1988 ELECTION because of his record of plagiarizing speeches by members of the British Parliament? Scandals are not new, but they ARE fatal.

Also caught plagiarizing as a law student at Syracuse University, and during his 1988 bid he was caught exaggerating his academic achievement record?

It cost him the 1988 nomination, and I'm sure the McCain folks are just chomping at the bit to revisit this! It is so very well documented.

Of course Obama is very comfortable with plagiarizing the work of others himself, so he wouldn't care.

But the question of PERSONAL HONOR, McCain's bailywick, will be ON THE TABLE.

Personally, I fervently hope it's Biden, and I can't wait for the fallout!

The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   August 19th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

McCain is a very smart man and I'm sure he will pick a good VP

Hope it is Mitt

McCain's plan for energy is great. He suggests drilling, nuclear power, and wind power with solar boosts.

Obama's plan is to put more air in the tires. What a plan but he is inexperienced and a loser while being risky and it would be a gamble with our country and our values if Obama is in office.
