Watch Ridge on CNN's The Situation Room.

(CNN) - Tom Ridge downplayed the effect his pro-choice views would have in a John McCain administration during an interview with CNN Tuesday, the same day reports surfaced the former Pennsylvania governor is seriously being considered for the bottom half of the Republican presidential ticket.

"Everybody wants to be the vice president," Ridge said. "At the end of the day, you're only giving your private counsel to the president. Publicly you echo the president's position, and I think every vice president understands that and appreciates that's the rule."

Watch: Ridge defends McCain

"All I know is that my friend of 25 years, John McCain, is strongly and forever pro-life," Ridge also said. "He also believes that you shouldn't be judgmental on other people's point of view with regard to this and some other very difficult issues. And as I said before, I think he'll make the right choice for his vice presidential nominee."

Ridge - who was reportedly on President Bush's VP shortlist in 2000, and rumored to be a potential replacement for Dick Cheney in 2004 - did little to stem speculation he's again among the top picks for the No. 2 spot.

"We'll just have to wait to see, won't we?" he said when asked directly about the possibility.

Ridge's comments come days after McCain indicated he was open to naming a running mate who supported abortion rights, a remark that caused an uproar among many social conservatives already ambivalent over his White House bid.

In the Tuesday interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Ridge also demonstrated his ease with playing the customary VP role of attack dog, hitting back hard against Barack Obama's comments earlier in the day claiming McCain had questioned his patriotism.

"I think Senator Obama has to understand for the President of the United States, if we challenge your point of view in the sense that your energy policy is inflating tires as opposed to nuclear, we're not challenging your patriotism, we're challenging your judgment," Ridge said. "If we challenge your judgment in the surge in Iraq, we're not challenging your patriotism."

"He referred to my friend of 25 years, Senator McCain. I take it very personal. John McCain doesn't question anybody else's patriotism," he also said.

Ridge is an idiot. I've never seen him give a serious speech without laughing .... He has a nervous habit at laughing at the wrong time. It is annoying.

I hope that John pick Mitt or Hucklebee. Either would suit me just fine.

I can't stand Obama and his blatant lies about J. McCain. McCain is a loyal American who shares my values. We need to call a spade a spade here and support John McCain, an American who will support our values while defending our country.

Obama will raise our taxes and create a whole new industry of Welfare Queens. He is green as the corn in the fields.

EDW – I'm pro-life, pro-birth and pro-personal responsibility. Pro-choice when it comes to giving my own money to charity (and I give more than 20% with an income of less than $60,000.) If the liberal dems voluntarily gave 20% of their combined incomes we could address the issues you mentioned.

You seem to be confused about the death penalty which is used for convicted criminals and abortion which is used for innocent babies.

The vp that Obama picks is going to run this country because Obama does not have a clue what he is doing. That is why he hides from debating. Obama's pitiful showing at the forum should have been enough to convince everyone, but his worshipers fail to heed the warning signs, just as people did when Bush was running. He ran on change too and look what we got.

Kim Hussein Taylor, Too bad kids don't have to walk 12 miles uphill to get to school. Maybe if they did they would be too tired to have irresponsible sex that leads to unwanted pregnancy and abortion. Try promoting responsibility for a real change.

Tom Ridge is the wrong man for VP.

"John McCain is making it awfully easy for us Clinton supporters to vote for him."

Yeah. All you have to do is completely ignore that stuff about ongoing war, a right-wing Supreme Court, the end of Roe vs. Wade, the continuation of Bush economic policies, and the fact that the woman you "support" SUPPORTS OBAMA.

lila   August 19th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

I'm scared. I'm scared for my fellow women. McCain is dangerous. He points fingers at Russia while the women in America are thrown back in a prison. While old gross men are given free viagra and young women are denied birth control and the freedom of choice. It's like rape. Mccain's desired violation into a woman's private life is unbearable.
I fear for the bleak, despairing dank days that would follow a McCain win. It would be a long time before women were set free again from the cold war grip of sexiam.
I wish Tom Ridge was running rather than McCain.

well well now   August 19th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

@Mike, Syracuse, NY-
i am always amused when men have such issues as to how a woman should treat HER body...abortion is not a form of birth control...you have NO IDEA what goes through a woman's mind when SHE is confronted with that choice...but it is HER choice...perhaps if your mother had the same option this blog would have at least 1 less moron...you Mike do not and will never know what a woman has to go through, so don't you dare try to defend McCain's disregard for a woman's CHOICE!

. The author attempts to portray McCain's actions in Vietnam as somehow heroic. They weren't. According to McCain's own words in his autobiography FAITH OF MY FATHERS — within four days of being captive, he offered and then gave valuable and valid military information to his captors in return for medical treatment he wanted but which other POWs in his position didn't get. I have seen reports (one from a man who was the chief Republican investigator for the 1992 committee on POWs on which McCain sat) which indicates that McCain was the "star" of upwards of 30 propaganda broadcasts for his captors. I have seen reports from men who were Senior Ranking Officers at the prison camp in which McCain was purportedly incarcerated who said that, at a time when McCain claimed he was tortured, no torture was happening at that camp (they said they couldn't comment directly about McCain, since no POWs were present when one of their number was being questioned, but they spoke generally about the camp's activities and nature).

John   August 19th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

I liked Tom Ridge when he was governor. I hated him as the Homeland Security color-code guy. I can't stand John McCain, and Ridge is going to make him any better, and he's not going to help McCain win Pennsylvania. As good a governor as he was, I think Rendell's more popular.

Ridge, Romney, Liberman, it is still McCain that matters. Senator McCain has hung his political kite on his backing of the Iraq War, his strong support for the ‘surge’ and his identifying General Patraeus as being a great field general. He has also greatly criticized Senator Obama for not sharing this enthusiasm for those things. Let’s do a bit of a reality check. First, I don’t think there is anyone anywhere that thinks the Iraq War was really and honestly justified, that it has been well run or that it has come close to providing a direct thrust against the actual terrorist threat or even that it has reasonably achieved the Bush administration’s stated objectives. Next, before the ‘surge’ was implemented, America’s recruitment, compensating, sponsoring and arming of numerous segments of the Iraqi population to fight the insurgency was in itself showing significant progress. And last, General Patraeus was the last in a string of generals who finally satisfied President Bush’s requirement for someone who reported in a politically supportive manner. A few obvious questions then are: does it seem, especially when considering the ‘surge’s’ easy go of it, that possibly the current results could have been achieved without the ‘surge’?; that we have now actually and alarmingly created a country of several small armies?; and additionally just what has been the to date and ongoing cost in American taxpayer dollars (what is our direct cost for these Iraqi warlords)?; and then have we neglected for far too long the real War on Terror?; have we overtaxed our troops and our ability to prosecute the real War on Terror or to even respond elsewhere?; has the War in Iraq, with little real value, cost us too much in lives lost, dollars spent and all while neglecting other important priorities?; and last is General Patraeus’s real value to the Bush administration just more of a political nature. One additional important question of course is, who has really benefited from all of this and what is the Bush-Cheney-etal group getting from them? … and then, are those people now supporting John McCain?

Carl from MI   August 19th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

McCain isn't pro-life... he's pro-fetus. A war-monger like him isn't pro-life and is lying by saying he is. You cannot value human life AND be so quick to jump to war. McCain is for WAR and KILLING and is NOT PRO-LIFE!! Once again... he is only pro-fetus.

By the way... that is hardly a Christian stance!! Being a war-monger is anything BUT Christian. They hypocrisy is mind-boggling.

And yet you people on this blog still support him like he's doing something good by being gung-ho for war. WAKE UP, AMERICA!!

And just for the record... McCain has received 3 times as much money from Big Oil than Obama has!! Obama has received MORE from Exxon because MORE lower level employees have donated to him. I'm sure the upper level employees and management have all donated to McCain. This should be a no-brainer for you Repuglicans... but for some reason, you just don't seem to be able to grasp this simple concept.

Mrs. Clinton would NEVER approve of the policies of MudCain so why would you ever vote for the man? He is too old and sick to handle the job. Period.

OBAMA '08 – the only rational choice.

Erika, KS   August 19th, 2008 9:31 pm ET

No. I don't think McCain will choose a pro-choice vp. It's interesting speculation. He knows Obama is a weak candidate and with all the uproar on the dem side, it would be easy to vote for him. The religious right might not vote for him. Tough call. You really can't have it both ways.

John Smith   August 19th, 2008 9:22 pm ET

In America, we are really good at electing "dumbos" to the Presidency. Just count the following:

1. George Bush
2. Bush Senior
3. Regan

Now, we are ready to elect another senile guy, rather than a presidential scholar, to the presidency!!!

To all Hillary supporters that won't vote for Obama and keep screaming that they will vote for McSame, let me show you an excerise I have found interesting.

Place your hand, palm down in front of you. Then close all fingers but your fore finger and thumb. Then lift the back of your hand to your forehead, keeping the fore finger and thumb extended. Now look in the mirror. Do you see that BIG L on your forehead staring at you in the mirror? Do you? That's right! Your a big LOOSER!!!!! So go and vote for the second worst politican (next to W) and the only Republican dumb enough to run against any Democrat this election cycle.

Oh! Let me just say one thing about Hillary, she sucks and is a giant LOOSER!!!!

tony   August 19th, 2008 8:59 pm ET

Hey EDW–
It's called preparing for the birth of your children and being responsible enough to take care of them WITHOUT Gov't interference
You should use birth control or wait until the time is right-
But you DEMs want to rely on People who have been successful to help just anyone-
I believe that people who really need the help should get it-That doesn't mean a handout-
One of the reasons we have so much Crime by the poor is because they wait for their subsidy and then have no goals in life-so they feel depressed and unaccomplished - so lets compound the problem instead of making people contribute to society and feel better about themselves-not trying to scare them from the other side by telling them we are going to take their program away–

Raymond Duke   August 19th, 2008 8:58 pm ET

I like the way he bit McCaskill the other night but I do not think he would be a good choice for the vp.

Chris, Silicon Valley, CA, USA   August 19th, 2008 8:56 pm ET

If it is Tom Ridge, then pro-life Republicans will have strong reason to suspect McCain's commitment to pro-life issues.

The traditional wisdom is that VP choices "don't matter". This year, that is wrong. McCain will likely serve only 1 term if elected.

His VP could conceivably be President from 2013-2021.

To answer a prior post, the "difference" is that, this would cast doubt on McCain's intentions to appoint pro-life judges. His successor would likely get the opportunity to appoint more than McCain himself. Social conservatives are getting tired of empty promises from the GOP on this issue. Many of them vote based on this issue, because it is important to them. Picking a pro-choice VP would indicate that it is not all that important to McCain.

Alan   August 19th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

EDW is right. But why stop at killing babies, why not kill every child that is not wanted. Why stop there, why not kill all adults that are over 70. Everyone knows that they have nothing more to contribute to society. I vote that EDW is the first chairperson of the panel that decides who gets to live and die.

smart   August 19th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Why are we Christians in Americaa so gullible?

All along Republicans have been claiming pro-life; what have they done to to support it?

Only during election times; they drum up the pro-life issue to decieve us and after that, nothing!
For more than 7 years of Bush, there has been no legislation towards pro-life even though he used that plattform to rally the evangilacals.

How long shall we be decieved?

Mr. Ridge, you are not from the mainstream Conservative. You do not need to justify that John McCain is strong pro-life. You have to consider John McCain's age. VP may have to take over. You are not fit to be the VP> If you John McCain gives you the ticket, we will stay at home and I am sure it will be the end of the Republican party. Stay away from these comments. You just ahve to be behind John McCain and take care of your state (PA) so that John McCain can win there. I hope Mitt Romney gets the ticket. He deserves it.

Hello Jack I had to make a comment and I figure who better than you. Instead of republicans questioning Mr. Obama's patriotism they better look at Mr. McCain closer. I think people had better watch out for McCain because he was abused in Vietnam. Most Doctors say if a person was abused in any kind of way they will abuse somebody as well. I think he will find a war to start, they say that Obama is meek and to diplomatic. Well I think sometime it is better than going to fight a war we may not need to be in. Like the war we are in right now and trying to get out of. Thank you for your ear Jack, even if you do not use this on the Situation Room.

I hope McCain chooses Ridge or Romney. It would seal the fate of the GOP.

McDumb   August 19th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Tom was dodging the direct questions regards to attack on Obama's patriotism. and Wolf wasn't quoting McDumb to make it any harder.

He denied it and gave examples that wasn't the attacks. The attacks included putting his political interest 1st against the country. Thats the real definition of questioning his patriotism.

instead wolf said he came close to questioning him instead of stating an example.

he also couldn't name one energy policy achievment since Mcdumb been in the senate for 26 yrs.

What is the difference   August 19th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

McCain has made it clear that he is pro-life, so what does it matter if his VP is also? If the conservatives do not want to vote for a pro life person then they just will not vote for McCain. ???

Pat Riot   August 19th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Well spoken Mr Ridge. If we are a nation that has promised to protect the life and liberty of all then certainly the unborn deserve the same right to their own life. However, life has recently become difficult to define. I think if we should turn to anyone for an opinion it should be the Congressman from Texas Dr. Ron Paul. He is an OB/GYN and Jane Roe of Roe v Wade supported his candidacy.

Joe - Chicago, IL   August 19th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Pick a hard-line social 'conservative' and you lock up the Religious Right but alienate moderate voters who will likely not vote for you.

Pick a moderate VP, help your reputation with moderate voters and gain a few points there but piss off the religious right, who's going to vote McCain anyway because he's running GOP.

Wow, though choice.

Allen Friedman   August 19th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

The Republicans will offend somebody with almost all of their top V. P. candidates. The best candidate for McCain for vice president would be Dan Quail who has the experience and knows the price of potatoes!!! This intelligent man is just what Republicans need to capture all of the Fox news watchers and all of right wing radio listeners. The Democrats stand to lose all of the lunitic voters that are followers of Quail and his followers. This election is in trouble if all of the nuts vote Republican but they always do!!!

Mikey   August 19th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

"John McCain doesn't question anybody else's patriotism," he also said.

So I've been hallucinating all the times the McCain camp has subtly, and not so subtly, questioned Senator Obama's patriotism?

EDW – Awesome comment! And don't forget that it says, "thou shall not kill", not "thou shall not kill, unless you want the oil in the country your victims live in"

Oh, and can someone explain why McCain has missed 20 straight votes on the environment before telling us he was an environmentalist? His last vote was two years ago. Why has he missed 13 straight votes on energy issues? His last vote on energy was two years ago, too. Does he really simply not care? Or was he playing politics, so he could come back later and say he was either for or against anything? Why would we vote for someone who has totally shirked his duties as a U.S. Senator? Please say no to Senator AWOL!

Sammy   August 19th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Perhaps its another sign of more Republicans moving away from people who use this issue as a litmus test above things like the war and the economy. Gay marriage is the other bugaboo. But it seems the country is slowly deciding that its not that important in the grand scheme of things these days.

Oh and I read the latest political argument about whether or not abortions went down the last 8 years and the answer is yes. Not because of any kind of morality but because birth control is more widely used so there is less need for it. But then... birth control is a taboo as well, isnt it?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 19th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

EDW, you're right. There are a lot of challenges you face in life. Much better to be aborted, than to have to go to a substandard school, or live in a slum right? I suspect that just about everyone dealing with one or more of the problems you cite would rather be alive to face them than have been aborted. The time for choice is before getting pregnant. Only 1% of abortions are the result of incest or rape. The rest are because of failure to engage in responsible sex.

Ed Word   August 19th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

The GOP thinks life begins at conception and then treats it like it ends at birth.

Pick Ridge, and Rush will sulk and pout forever.

Gene   August 19th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

EDW is exactly right... McCain is pro-birth, not pro-life. He supports the fact that every conception should lead to a birth, regardless of the economic condition, mental condition, family stability, age of the mother, the detriment it would cause to have a child in a hostile or unfit environment.. those things should all be considered before bringing a child into this world. Unfortunately, they're not.. which is why we have so many impoverished people out there. But you know... pro-life doesn't necessarily mean you're pro – good life.

Michael   August 19th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Ridge is a good man, but McCain would be wise to not play with fire and choice a pro-life VP.

Speaking of VPs, I see Obama is planning an event in his home state before rolling into the convention and might have his anounced VP on stage with him. Obama and his potential VP should probably make the best of this opportunity. Once the DNC covention gets started and the Clinton machine rolls into town, Obama and his VP may never step up on a stage again this election season.

Peter   August 19th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Tom Ridge would make McShame fail...more than he was goin to

I truly fear what will happen to this country if McCain is elected. I have supported the Republican party for many years, never afraid of giving a fair amount of money to the cause, but this year, I gave my hard-earned dollars to Barack Obama.

He is the ONLY one who has the ability to unite this country.
He is the ONLY one who can bring about change necessary to keep our country as the best in the world.

Good luck and godspeed, Senator Obama!

I totally agree with EDW's post above:

"The GOP do not advocate pro-life issues: childcare, healthcare (including birth control), and education."

Nor would we be in wars that cost us the lives of so many.

Ridge – orange, red, pink? anyone?

Wrap your houses in saran wrap and seal it with duct tape so no oxygen gets in. Live there for 5 to 10 days. Abortion problem solved.

obama needs eletoral votes not clinton supporter

DJ Los Angeles   August 19th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Pathetic that the Republican party has come down to this. Instead of prioritizing urgent matters that effect all Americans, the Republican base wants to dwell on the wedge issues that bitterly divide people and have no real business in government.

EXXON MCCAIN bumper stickers online...

Ridge says quite clearly that,"He also believes that you shouldn't be judgmental on other people's (this means anybody, don't ya think)point of view with regard to this and other very difficult issues".

Then why is he being judgemental on Obama?

Go figure. What' good for the goose is not good for the gander, I guess.

EDW – (2nd post) -
Well said!

Independent FL--- Troy   August 19th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

I really hope that McCain picks Ridge. He sounds like a real idiot, and it would lock up an Obama win.

Obama '08

I thought McCain was pro-abortion – I figure some of those bombs he dropped in Vietnam hit women, and some of those women were pregnant. So, why shouldn't his VP be pro-abortion as well?

maurice   August 19th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

No Hillary then no Obama!

kim hussein taylor portland, oregon   August 19th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Wake-up voters ( PLEASE)

California Gold   August 19th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Tom Ridge's words regarding a pro-choice Vice President are truthful. True the President's Vice Pres. functions as an advisor and publicly parrots the President's stance. Trouble is Mr. Ridge, your pro-choice views will alienate the religious right and that, sir, will prevent you from getting voted into office.

Catch-22.

EDW   August 19th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

The GOP are NOT pro-life, they are pro-birth. There is a huge difference! They advocate that all pregnancies should go to term and the baby be born alive. What they do not advocate is the real pro-life issues: childcare, healthcare (including birth control), education, safe environment, clean energy, etc. The religious right are wrong. They support taking life (death penalty) and abusing and degrading life (institutionalizing foster, adopt and mentally & developmentally challenged people), but they stand for this false mantra of every conception should result in a birth. If they were truly pro-life, then we would not have a 50% dropout rate in inner city schools, the highest rate of incarceration of any industrialized nation (mostly minority), the worst sub-standard housing and schools for many of our nation's children, crumbling roads and bridges, homeless vets and mentally ill to be stepped over or cross the street from, no healthcare at all for millions, etc.
