A new CNN poll of polls shows Obama's lead is dwindling.
A new CNN poll of polls shows Obama's lead is dwindling.

(CNN) - In what could be an ominous sign for Barack Obama just days before he is formally named the Democratic presidential nominee, a new CNN poll of polls out Tuesday shows the Illinois senator's lead over John McCain has been cut in half in recent days.

According to CNN's average of several recent national surveys, Obama's lead is now a slim 3 points over the Arizona senator, 46-43 percent - half of his advantage in a CNN poll of polls one week ago, and down from a high of 8 points in mid-July.

Election Center: Check out CNN's electoral map

The latest poll results come amid increased attacks from McCain on Obama's readiness to be commander-in-chief and the re-emergence of national security worries among voters in the wake of the Georgia crisis.

“Over the last week, we’ve seen Sen. Obama’s lead in the poll of polls cut in half,” noted CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “This change was likely driven by a renewed focus on foreign policy after Russia’s invasion of Georgia, as well as by Sen. McCain’s willingness to launch more aggressive attacks against Obama on issues such as off-shore drilling."

A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll out Tuesday evening was the latest national survey to indicate Obama's lead is dwindling, putting the Illinois senator ahead of McCain by only 2 points, well within the poll's margin of error. The CNN Poll of polls also includes new surveys from Quinnipiac and Gallup.

But the recent downturn in the polls for Obama may not last - the Democratic White House hopeful is headed for a week of what is likely to be overwhelmingly postive coverage as he names his running mate and officially accepts his party's presidential nomination.

"The big question now is whether Obama can successfully regain control of the campaign agenda as we head into the Democratic convention," Silverleib also said.

If the country gets swayed by negative advertisements then I guess we deserve another Bush which is what McCain is. McCain is a complete failure in Senate whether it is Campaign Finance or Immigration. He has flip-flopped on Bush taxes, oil drilling and immigration. He was a big supporter of Iraq war, the biggest foreign policy blunder and now is covering up with his support for surge. If people can not see through; I guess we deserve four more years of Bush (at least).

No doubt Cafferty will find some way to make this fall in the polls HRC's fault. I'm from Illinois and I knew eventually every one would see that the Emperor has no clothes. Maybe he should spend less time giving interviews to People Mag. and other fluff mags. that feed his ego but does little to address the problems of the nation and spend more time trying to prepare himself to be President. Oh! wait a minute when ask upon election to the senate he said he wouldn't run because he didn't have enough experience and would have to spend the next few years preparing for the job. He didn't spend that time preparing but it doesn't stop him from running.

I took a poll from my cellphone took about 10-15 minutes and I was not for McCain. I think I blew off a call like this before b/c it sounds like a telemarketing call at first.

Sofia   August 20th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Polls are so unreliable in this day and age. With many people using cell phones as their personal lines and with most on the do not call registry how is this reliable? I know if I get a phone call that I do not recognize the number or suspect it is a telemarketer I do not give them the time of day. Let's also factor in a time which this could be occuring... dinner? No one picks up the phone then, later? You get angry people trying to go to bed or put their children to sleep. Earlier? People are working. I'm sorry but I don't trust these polls. How about people just judge for themselves. Polls always have a bias, think of the people who don't own landlines, either for cell phone use or just for the fact that they can't afford them. Nope, don't trust polls.

Obama is still AHEAD!!!!! It only takes ONE vote more than Mcbush to win doesn't it? There were times when Hillary was close in the polls, and we all know how that turned out.
(((Donna from Missouri))))) Hillary was NOT pushed out,she LOST!!!
If you're NOT ok with her losing,I feel sorry for you. It was a contest, with a winner and loser. Did you expect Hillary to be 'given' the nomination, even though she didn't get the votes?
BTW,I've asked this question of other Hillary supporters, without getting a answer....Are you making contributions to help her retire her debt???? That's the only support that's going to help her now.
If you're 'hurt' because obam won the nomination, how bad are you going to feel when he becomes President????
It's going to happen you know!

I don't care about any polls, period! The people in this country are smarter than that. They realize that John McCain is not even remotely qualified to be President, and he will not win. I am 1000% positive Obama will win easily! Get used to the idea!

Wendy   August 20th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Everything will be OK for Obama, I trust the obama camp. They have great guys working on the campaign. Just wait and see.

Does anyone not listen to Chuck Todd or Cafferty? They are the only ones that will speak the truth about these stupid polls and about anything else. The polls mean nothing especially when the polls are being done in an area is that strictly for one than the other. When you ask 1000 people their opinions and they are asked in republican states, of course, the results will be for a republican. People are not dumb. Who cares about these made up meaningless polls. The one that will count is the exit poll and that will freak out the republicans.

Go Obama.

I would like to believe that Americans are smart enough to not vote for McCain against their self interests, but it may be the case, as Schiller said, that " a great moment has found a little people."

Armageddan   August 20th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Benedict Arnold was reprimanded for profiteering during the Revolutionary War. He got angry about it, but it was true. That was in the eighteenth century. Now here we are in the twenty first century and not only do we have just one person doing that but a whole administration applying the Benediction practices. Bush, Cheney and just about the whole administration is guilty of this, yet no one dares bring it up. I have not heard one mention of even the possibility that this is occurring. Strange.

So here comes McCain with the same aspirations. He's no different and is just as guilty. Yet once again, no one is taking these greedy men to task about it. We, the people, act as if we don't have a clue. McBush, pumping up his; "drill here, drill now" nonsense with his sights not only on off shore drilling, but also the Georgian pipeline and Iran too. God's judgment will come down on this nation with a fierce wrath and it will be well deserved. Go ahead and elect this baseless and moraless, unprincipled, untrustworthy man if you people want to. But remember, I told you so.

And when our sons and daughters continue to die for unjustified wars, don't cry and complain because we the people like whatever lies are told us to satisfied our national ego. Shame on us. We, the people, will also be judged by God too. And might I add, justly so. So like I said go ahead and vote for McWar, but don't complain about the death toll of our children and grandchildren.

We are a nation of idiots and fools with absolutely no common sense....

P.S. CNN, apparently I'm on your black list as evidenced by the countless times you have refused to post my comments. No matter what FREEDOM OF SPEECH will prevail, even if my voice is silenced. Tell candy I said hello and try to be objective rather than subjective.

Cheryl Wilson   August 20th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Obama supporters – do not fret over polls. Here's the poll you need to look at: If McCain were really up in the polls, why then why, is Obama raising $50,000,000 a month in campaign contributions versus McCain who raises a little over $20,000,000? THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS ARE SUPPORTING OBAMA. If Obama were really down in the polls, it would show in his contributions. Obama has raised more money than any candidate in US history.

Also, for those that do follow polls, Obama's numbers may have slipped a notch or two, but McCain's numbers have not risen at all. McCain is stil in the lower to mid 40%. Also, let's not forget Obama has over 20,000,000 energetic, enthusiastic, youthful foot soldiers who will be working the ground on election day getting out the vote. McCain does not have an army of young, energetic foot soldiers. This election will be won at the ground level. Obama will win, I have no doubt.

If the American people as a whole can't see that Barack Obama is the best person to be the next president , then we are in for a lot of trouble in this country. John McCain is just another Republicain who will lie ,cheat and degrade to become president. Are we going to be fooled again by a man who is just George Bush with white hair? Mr. Obama just cant seem to get a break from those who hate the idea of an African American president. That is the main reason his lead in the polls will never reach above 50%. America, wake up and elect someone who have your best intrest in mind for a change. These Republicains are the same people who sent our sons and daughters into Irag to die for a lie. Are we just going to forgive them and put them back into the white house?

I live in Missouri and I know of ten people or more that were Clinton supporters that are now saying they are going to vote for McCain.
I have been trying to listen to McCain more since Clinton gave up when all the media started pushing her out,(SHE WAS RIPPED OFF AND PUSHED OUT) ....
Some things McCain is starting to get my attention on and also I felt he did better then Obama when the Pastor questioned them.
I know people will vote for Obama if he has Clinton as his VP because we feel she is more concerned about our health and other issues that effect us as a person, instead of treating us like we are a herd of cattle to be taken care of.
MAYBE if he asked Caroline to be his VP we wouldn't feel so bad for what everyone did to Clinton.
We don't care if Clinton is okay with what happened or not because it was US THE PEOPLE THAT WERE HURT NOT JUST HER*****
Thank you,
Donna in Missouri

What is wrong with America? Why can't we see that being lied to, bullied, and disrespected for the last 8 years will continue with the election of McCain. This man is running a VERY negative campaign full of lies and innuendo. I haven't heard any policies from him that are the polar opposite of Bush. Every town hall meeting is full of criticism of Obama. Please America don't be fooled this year, vote smart, and vote for the candidate that DID NOT endorse this war that got us into this mess in the first place!

Sluggo   August 20th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Obama supporters are showing very agile rationalizations for his continuing dip in the polls. The real answer is he is the worse choice since Jimmy Carter and people don't vote for losers.

McBride, SLC, UT   August 20th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Obama is still ahead isn't he CNN? Even after the constant negative press from you and the other so called Journalists out there. If you covered the McCain campaign as much as you do Obama and continually question and attack him, then you would also see this down turn in the polls that you do! Let the American people see a more objective poll. That will come on election day when we all vote.

Kim   August 20th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Those voting for Obama are not worried. I put nothing past the republicans and because of that I pay no attention to the polls. The polls at the beginning indicated that Obama didnt have a chance at becoming the dems nominee.... And it happened anyway. Just know this, Our country is in state of depression like I have never seen before. Barak Obama will win, make no mistake about it.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   August 20th, 2008 10:56 am ET

If by any chance McCain does manage to lie his way into the White House there may only be one scenario that will save the U.S. and that would be to take all your citizens currently in prison and arm them and send them off to fight the wars you will have throughout the world.

Then after all the prisoners have been killed off you can reinstate the draft and that will end some of the wars as the elite won't be sending their relatives to the slaughter house.

It is amazing to me how dumb the majority of Americans are. Bill Maher said it on LKL last night, and isn't it the truth.

The intellegent citizens, the ones who read up on each candidate, don't listen to the spin and rhetoric of the media and make an informed decision, based on fact, not TV commercials are in the minority.

For them, myself included, it is a celar and easy choice.

Obama is the choice. McWalkingCane isn't even an option.

Peter of Oregon   August 20th, 2008 10:45 am ET

My friends... Obama's ahead though is he not? Let me give you some straight talk.. With McCain and his Republican base throwing every sort of dirty attack at him. Calling him the world's greatest celebrity, a fundamentalist muslim terrorist in disguise, the anti-christ even. Saying he's not patriotic, he's elitist, that he doesn't care about our vets, that he's only running to fullfil self-ambition (something McCain accused himself of in 2002 as we now know.)... using some of Hillary Clinton's 3:00am tactics, And Obama's ahead is he not?

Give me a break CNN. Why not report on McCain's "I'm running for President to fullfill self-ambition" admission that he made in 2002? Oh.. I understand. You don't want to do anything that'll damage his image since if he wins he'll line your pockets along with other big cooperations.

Al Ram   August 20th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Correction: No doubt that republican is the party of the simple minded. Country folk who comment on the Olympics in racial terms. It's easier to judge something by its color, it takes less brain power and attention span, as it is easier for them to just maintain the status quo (Bush and the rest of the republithugs). I guess they are not brave enough for change… as they celebrate "victories" while our country keeps falling into a deeper crisis year after year….

Alice Brinkley   August 20th, 2008 10:42 am ET

His lead hasn't been cut nearly enough to suit me. He should drop out for the good of our country. He would only bring great misery to the USA as he favors other countries first, and tells us up front to expect great "sacrifices" (now just what do you think that is, Obamaniacs? –a loser, who wants to bring USA down to deprived levels of other countries).

I wrote a rather lengthy respose to this earlier but I guest it was a little too critical of the News Media and a small percetage of the electorates REAL issue with Obama. But that as OK. But let me just say this...when have you EVERY HEARD these as the reason a person SHOULD NOT be elected:
1) Too Popular
2) Too thoughtful in giving answers
3) Lying about their relegion ( Even though EVERYTHING in his history says he is what he says he is)
4) His rhetoric is too positive
5) He doesn't have a REAL plan ( even though there are pages and pages of it on his website)
For 10% of the electorate it has nothing to do with his character....I think you can figure out what the REAL obstacle is...That is why the polls are still tight.

John in Ohio   August 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Something to note that CNN does't talk about is that Obama's number have stayed stable throughout all this.
8/19: Obama 46% – McCain 43%
8/13: Obama 47% – McCain 41%
8/8: Obama 46% – McCain 41%
8/6: Obama 46% – McCain 41%
If you go back further, the numbers stay the same. There is maybe 1-2% fluctuations to McCain from the undecideds, but Obama's numbers stay stable.

Brandon in MN   August 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

I'm just wondering, do this "poll of polls" concept have ANY statistical validity? Seems to be fuzzy math to me. How can you "average" polls.

It may sound nice and relevant to the layman, but then again, most people think you can predict the next coin flip based on the last one.

Becca   August 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Then once everyone is tried of him, Hillary can win.

Hillary will be around to pick up the pieces and help solve your country's problems for a long time yet.

Dave G, Minneapolis   August 20th, 2008 10:36 am ET

There are SO many comments here that say "if you want war vote for McCain." or "the democrats will help the economy"...

BOTH ARE LIES!
Fellow Citizens, you are both arguing that one or the other party can actually fix things. They can't and won't. You wanted an end to the war, the Dems won congress based on that promise and have done nothing. People want security but McCain AND Obama vote for FISA that reduces our freedom and security. You wanted smaller government and voted for Bush...now we have a government more bloated than any in history. You want to blame it on Bush...but now, Congress writes the laws and Bush says Yea or Veto...The Dems now have this responsibility and what do we have? War, failing economy, debt, higher taxes.

BOTH PARTIES ARE TO BLAME. DON'T keep betting on a losing horse. Do you want a better America for your kids? Do some research and don't vote for either McCain or Obama!!!

facts are facts   August 20th, 2008 10:33 am ET

McCain is right women should be subject to state control and the government shouldn't be giving veterans so many perks.

Phil Gramm will certainly put the public in it's place with such a progressive approach to the economic conditions in the U.S. which will also help to keep workers working at more than one job with less time for buying stuff they can't afford anyway.

It's what the democrats do. Divisive, destructive politics.

Everyone can name things Obama does not have. What has McCain done? At Saddlebrook, the truth is Obama answered honestly. We all stumble to answer questions unless we had a prepared short answer. The nuiance is to open the dialog.

For my friends:

They took me up into one of the interrogation rooms, and for the next 12 hours we wrote and rewrote. The North Vietnamese interrogator, who was pretty stupid, wrote the final confession, and I signed it. It was in their language, and spoke about black crimes, and other generalities. It was unacceptable to them. But I felt just terrible about it. I kept saying to myself, "Oh, God, I really didn't have any choice." I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine.

This is the real John McCain-POW

McCain's supposed attacks have been pretty mellow by any standard...pointing out "The Obama's" cult of celebrity and inexperience. "The Obama's" attacks...they will try and scare you!!!! playing the race card have been pretty low, and have also hurt him. However, Saddleback showed the real problem for "The Obama". He really has no core principals or conviction, and no experience to draw upon. When he says change and hope, and avoids answering questions its because he doesn't have the answers. "The Obama" wants to be President and appoint Supreme Court justices, but a decision about when life begins is above his pay grade. He's not being asked to act like God.....just a President who makes those decisions every day! The American people have noted that he is failing badly!!! Super Delegates...its still not too late.........Nominate Hillary!

Jacci   August 20th, 2008 10:30 am ET

The only people who are voting for John McCain are people with money, the rich. AND, the people who can't get over their prejudices which they learned growing up. Prejudice is a learned behavior and it can be unlearned. Look at people for who they are inside, not the outside features. If you are a Christian, you are not going to get all of what the Bible teaches in John or Barack. Barack cares more about human rights than John, and that is a fact. We have had enough war, and John would love to keep our country going in wars. That is all he seems to be proud about. I don't think the death of many is something to boast about. Our country needs serious attention and John has no clue what to do, and doesn't really care because he has it made with all of the money his wife has. Vote Barack people....wake up.

Obama supporters are mostly young individuals with cell phones who dont have landlines. Mostly older people have landlines.

So in essence, the polls only polls the older demographic. And if you ask me, he's doing pretty well against mccain with these older individual because you know most of these people have old mindsets and are not hip to whats really going on.

The young generation will shatter these polls and then everyone will really be talking about how these polls dont matter.

OOOOOH.... SCARY... 'OBAMA LEAD CUT IN HALF.' I could better understand the concern if 'cut in half' meant cut from 30 percent to 15. But at this point in the race to go from a high of 8 points last month to 3 is, in my opinion, insignificant. I can't help but get the feeling Mooney is trying to make this sound more dramatic than it really is.

DHuston   August 20th, 2008 10:28 am ET

If for one minute the American Pulblic believes that the terrorist acts wil go away because we elect Obama, then you are fooling yourselves. There is no sitting down and discussing options with terrorist. The only option they want to hear is our defeat. Plain and simple.

McCain wants a victory for our soldiers and the common good of western society around the world. These are perilious times, but we must remain strong and not crumble to Socialist Government. Our forefathers would be turning over in there graves to know that we have let that happen.

Socialism does not work. Look to Russia and you will see. We can not afford to let someone like Obama in Office. He will bring this country lower than where it is right now.

It's going to get MUCH worse for Obama. There are half a dozen career destroying items on his resume that Obamanots just ignore or don't realize because they live in a bubble or something. There is no other explanation for this nonsense... This is a "ludicrous" candidate.

We can't afford four more years of scandals, runaway spending,
young men and women dying for.........................., high cost of gasoline, high cost of fuel to heat homes, poor education for our children who are taught by test, home foreclosures, jobs going overseas, no hope.
McBush is senile and much to old to be president. What are his skills, 26 years in the senate where they've spent every dime we had, he was a POW. So.........................I think I'll try the new guy. He's smart and he can learn. We'll be safer as soon as we leave Iraq, they (middle East) wwwwant us to leave their land and we should. Vote Obama!!

Crystal   August 20th, 2008 10:27 am ET

As Americans why would we want a president to be someone who sees it fit to replace the American Flag with his own personal symbol? Obama should not be running for president for himself he should be running for president because he believes he is the best American for America. How arrogant can you be to do that? If he is elected president we will see and increase in taxes and an influx of illegal’s taking over America. I have heard him speak and still to this day can not find his platform. I hear he wants change and wants to unit America but see no plan of action. He is all talk. The only action I can see is his past voting history which is not something to gloat about. The company that he keeps raises eyebrows and statements that have been made have raised eyebrows. He will not wear the American Flag pin nor show proper respect for the National Anthem yet we believe we would be a good Commander in Chief. Lets be realistic people. He is not the bright shining star he once even had me fooled to believe he was.

Panamanian McCain knows that to win over Bush idiots he needs to use the same tactics Bush used to take McCain down. There was a time I thought Americans were smart but what I am seeing now is that many Americans are uninformed and uneducated for wanting more of the same.

My vote for Obama will never change.

NoBHusseinObama   August 20th, 2008 10:26 am ET

Other than maybe in the liberal enclaves on the coasts, no one is voting for Obama. They may say so in a poll, but will not pull the lever for him come election day.

John McCain has both good judgment and experience. Obama is a JM wannabe, the way he eventually copies McCain's ideas on almost every issue except abortion. He was even waffling on abortion in the religious forum.

Hello Alexander Mooney , who was in these poll you took and how many people was in this one. You say Sen Obama lead has slip from 46-43 percent — half of his advantage in a CNN poll of polls one week ago, and down from a high of 8 points in mid-July. One thing wrong with your poll is 1000 or 1500...ie people don't speak for America. GO OBAMA

Roy Maines   August 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

I think Obama's turn in the polls is primarily due to people finally learning more about his ultra-left liberal policies. The country is hurting for sure, but Obama's plan would dig a deeper hole than we are already in. I'm personally glad he is lagging in the polls he is no where near being qualified to lead this country.

Nate   August 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Here is why he will lose – I just had a conversation with my office mate (an O'bot) and I (democrat myself) expressed reluctance on Obama (because of his rapid shift from Primaries – FISA, Gun Control etc). His response? "You got to be kidding me! How can you even question that? You are a closeted republican and idea of Black man as president scares you" (FYI – I am brown).

WoW! It reminded me of talking to Bush supporters in 2004. I really think that this behavior puts off any rational thinker. I think you O'Bots need to tone it down a little, you are losing lifelong democrats with this blind following and racial accusations. Just my advice, you do what you see fit.

R.I.F.   August 20th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Does this mean the CNN and the rest of the media will finally start covering and criticizing McCain like they've been doing Obama every since the general election began? Every night I watch Election Center with Campbell Brown and 80% of her show is always filled with pundits debating on what Obama said, or did, or didn't do. Why not be fair to the American people and cover McCain the same way. I get tired of hearing every day that "Everyone already knows McCain" Really, do you really think that all 300 million Americans know the real McCain and what he does and stands for TODAY, or just this over-hyped "Maverick" that he was EIGHT YEARS ago????

Vi   August 20th, 2008 10:12 am ET

August 20th: Reuter/Zogby poll: McCain 5% ahead.

With such polls beginning to appear regularly, Obama should do the right thing NOW for the US, the DNC, and himself and family.

He should decline the nomination in DENVER in favour of Hillary and wait his turn in 2016. This way, he'll show that he is indeed a new brand of politician who is noble not self-centred, a statesman not a rank politician. (His advisors should be willing to wait their turn at the White House too.) He'll be a shoo-in in 2016 - at the age of 55.

Otherwise it's humiliation for him!
Give Hillary her chance. It's her turn.
Yours will come, my young friend.

Tired of the liberals whining about our great country. There's nothing wrong - and everything right - about America - right here, right now. Danielson   August 20th, 2008 10:11 am ET

We've already seen - TWICE - that just about half of our nation isn't fit to vote in a Presidential election. (Bush Bush). What's heartening is that Obama has a lead, still, in the face of McCain's appeal to the 7th grade mentality.

That means a few of the idiots who voted Bush a second time...are actually LEARNING. Gettting smarter. Starting to realize that being draped in an American flag can also mean your own BURIAL if you don't listen beyond the heroic yet empty Powers Boothe voiceover and learn to ignore the campfire stories of the black boogeyman's pending economic disaster....

But to everyone, can we realistically say that the first African American who makes history as the first President of the United States will win it in a landslide??? Do we really think that come November we won't be up all night waiting for the results because it's going to be close?

AS much faith as I have in our country I don't believe that will happen. Clearly Obama is the right choice considering the 2 but it will be closer than any poll will predict.

Why do the Obama supporters constantly react to any "anti-Obama" news with such hubris, hostility and insults? Calling McCain "McBush" or "McSame", "Repuglican" or any other of your juvenile names, is no different than calling Obama an Empty Suit, a Socialist or any of the other things that some people call him.

Consistently, the majority of Obama people openly call anyone who even considers a vote for McCain, to be "stupid". They (meaning the Obama robots) are not capable of understanding, of seeing through the anger and bitterness because of the last two Pres. elections clearly enough, to even consider that different people have different priorities, and differing points of view. You are totally under-estimating your opponents. That has always been a bad mistake. You are forgetting about a lot of people in this country, or brushing them off. Another mistake.

JOEMAC1   August 20th, 2008 10:09 am ET

To CNN:
It is very easy to see that you guys are playing around with the race. You do show after show on negative attacks by the McBushes, even when the stories are not true. You harp on the fact that the race is tightening, even though your sometimes biased reporting helps to cause it. How about reporting that McCain can't get over 42-43%. You never mention that he was 894th out of 899 at the Naval Academy. That he cheated on his first wife, and that he was involved in the Keating 5 affair, that he outright lies on a daily basis. You report the campaign as a self-fulfilling-prophecy. McCain would have America in another war within 6 months and he admits to knowing nothing about the economy. Even though the media is complicit in swift boat attacks on democrats, Obama is still winning, and has the larger upside, why don't you guys talk about that.

sky   August 20th, 2008 10:09 am ET

You CNN guys REALLY want to make this look close...the big thing is that the Clinton supporters badly want it to look like Barack cant pull it off, reinterating my view that they really dont care about the DNC only themselves and their wounded pride....so they dont come to the table.....I do not forgive Hillary for that separation she creatively thrust upon a wounded party. But, hey...Obama is still winning without them....and after the convention.....when they finally come on board... this will be a landslide victory for Obama. As a party and as a nation, we should all be celebrating. The world is SO excited about Obama....it is historic and a positive thing at a time when we were at our lowest moment. I dont blame McCain, I blame Hillary for this closeness right now and if the DNC goes down because of it....you have her and her strange and nasty cohorts to blame for it.

If this is so then blame the hillary supporters. It seems that if McCain wins it's due to the overwhelming crybabies and puma that support hillary. I can tell you this much if McCain wins in 08 then more than likely there will never be a hillary presidency in 2012 because the o'bama supporters will never vote for her. So it looks like the republican will have the office at least an additional 8 years because we have 2 year olds crying that they can't have there way. Such a shame to put the people through another 8 years because you couldn't have your lollipop (hillary that is. From her childish supporters and puma ) so you act like a 2 year olds because you can't have your way. Bah, what's the point in even talking about it anymore. PUMA- patheticundermindinganarchy.

Puzzle2   August 20th, 2008 10:09 am ET

The rhetoric will ratchet up during and after the convention/v.p. announcement much to CNN's liking, but the embers will die down and fizzle out much to CNN's dismay, although they will keep plastering Obama's face all over the network.

Joel   August 20th, 2008 10:08 am ET

For the first time ever, McCain actually leads Obama in the electoral map based on real clear politics average polling information today. It is going to be a close race either way, but I don't see traditional conservative states turning democratic with a far liberal candidate. The Dems best choice probably would have been a more moderate candidate. This election should have been a slam dunk for the Dems – unpopular Rep administration, unpopular war, terrible economy. The fact that Obama isn't running away with this election speaks volumes for him as a candidate and the DNC.

Lucious Leftfoot   August 20th, 2008 10:08 am ET

The only poll that matters is in November- CNN announces some new poll number everyday, and Obama has yet to be behind- so what does that tell you?

The media can't protect McCain forever, and when he doesn't have the luxury of his teleprompter and the crib sheets that he palms relentlessly, America will see how much of a risk he truly is-

We can't afford to have another dumb, hawkish, loose cannon of a president, and that's exactly what McCain represents.

oldjoe   August 20th, 2008 10:07 am ET

I sure hope the CNN profiles compare McCain and Bush on their moves through college, Annapolis and Harvard, on their legacy appointments because of their fathers. Both were skated through college, both were goof offs, neither was a success after college. "W" got and stayed married. McCain got, then dumped, then got another with a pre-nup.

The Russians today, in Georgia, simply tied ropes to our Marine HumVees and towed them away. We're there on a "training exercise". Guess they need training afterall.

I'm ironong my flag so I can wrap myself in it, I'm putting the flag pin in my lapel and thumping my chest while some Russian varmint steals "W's" horses while he's watching the girls play volleyball in bikinis from the oval office TV.

vivid   August 20th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Of course, when Obama was leading in every single poll against John McCain over the summer, that too was spun by the media as being "bad news" for him and "excellent" for McCain. I wonder why that is.

Don't you know   August 20th, 2008 10:07 am ET

A lot of us Obama supporters don't engage in polls. It's a waste of time and energy. We know who we stand behind and will vote accordingly.

PK   August 20th, 2008 10:05 am ET

no matter what the poll say i believe the american people are wise enough to know that empty words that thrill you for a moment is shallow and really means nothing. the american people want a president who can speak well, have a foresight to see what is best for the country, one who can communicate with respect with it's neighbors, one who can control his temper and make sound judgements. one who can relate to all people and definitely McCain falls short in all of these. the american people will not make the mistake of electing another Bush who has brought shame to our country.

also i believe the media should crank down more on McCain and show the nation who he really is. the american people don't know McCain as they say they do. Most american's only know him as a military man. that's it. what about his bad temper? what about his rude attitude towards people who have asked him questions during his town hall meeting? what about him committing adultery? what about he's views on Pro-life when he supported killing thousands of people in Iraq? what about he's views on who's considered rich? he's not able to speak well, or have the ability to reason with anyone. why not really dig into all of these things a really question him on it? there's many things the american people don't know about McCain. all he talks about is WAR, WAR, WAR. let the media really dig into his past & current life and see what they find out about McCain. you did it on Obama why not McCain?

the media is trying to make Obama look bad when really he's the man to be president. the bottom line is that the media don't want a black man for president.

Staone   August 20th, 2008 10:05 am ET

I read these posts each day and can not understand the logic behind HRC supporters??? THINK, if Obama is elected w/HRC as the Vice, HRC will get 8 years with Obama and another 8 as president!!! Have anyone thought about that??? Think people!!! The Dems are trying to keep McBush from knowing each and ever move!!! CHESS ANYONE!!! THINK!!! McBush has nothing to offer the American people!!! War hero, YES!!! But the leader OUR nation needs right now, NOOOOOOOOOO! We as Americans must show the world we can elect a GOOD President. Someone who can repair OUR image around the world.

the real U.S.A.   August 20th, 2008 10:05 am ET

If McCain wins it's just a sign of the times that this country can't accept what's best for them if it comes in another shade of color. That's what this is really about anyway. People are looking for a reason not to vote for Obama and deep down inside know McCain is not the answer. It's amazing how quickly we believe everything negative about Obama and this man just wants to stick to the issues and problems at hand whereas McCain's best campaign tactic is to sling mud. WE'RE IN TROUBLE!!!

Jbjm   August 20th, 2008 10:04 am ET

JB, Boston   August 20th, 2008 10:04 am ET

And, why is it that McCain cheating on his wife is such a bad thing. And yet CLinton and Edwards can do it, and "it's no ones business".

Hypocrites. Cheating is cheating is cheating. I would argue that him leaving his wife is the morally stonger thing to do. As opposed to Bill Clinton who continues to cheat on his wife, and she stays to maintain her poltical career. Which ultimately makes her look weak and more concerned with power than her happiness.

Hey, here's a crazy idea CNN: How about instead of inane articles about polls, more polls & polls of polls, let's take a close introspective look at the scripted right-wing policy replies by McCain at Saddleback that should lead you to remove "independent" and "maverick" from your adjectives when refering to the Arizona senator. Or would that require too much work on your behalf?

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 20th, 2008 10:00 am ET

We just had a real world 3 AM moment in Georgia, and Barry failed open. His waffly indecisive comment about both sides needing to show restraint was right out of the liberal play book. America wants a decisive leader. That's McCain. After Pear Harbor, Obama probably would have said both sides needed to show restraint.

I have been on other blogs and we all agree. We don't think these polls mean squat and the media is stirring this up and over exaggerating the issues with Senator Clinton supporters to make ratings and interesting reading and news reporting. Who is at home during the day to receive these polling phone calls? What woman would TRULY support John McCain when his voting record on issues concerning American women is poor?

The Gallup poll had the two Senators tied, 44% on Friday. The Real Clear politics poll, which averages 7 polls or more, had Senator Obama up by 3%, his largest lead in that poll all Summer! The other polls go up and down and makes you wonder who is being polled and where. Here is a poll to watch for, November 5th! Watch for that one.

Not being fooled   August 20th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Who are they polling?! Where are they polling?! I do not know one Republican who will vote for John McCain and I do not know one Independant or Democrat who will not vote for Barack Obama.

The media has shifted it's focus from Obama to McCain, that is all. Everytime the media decides to fall in love with one candidate over another suddenly the "polls" swing in that candidates favor. It happened with Clinton, then Obama now McCain.

Anyone who believes the hype that the media shoves down our throats is a complete fool.

Frankly, how can we have a president that stutters for minutes and doesnt know what he is talking about: mmmmmm, hmmmmmm, uhmmmmmm, ahmmmmm, ohmmmmm

Sad that My democratic party is having such a candidate... I am really unsure if I can vote for him.

B-Man   August 20th, 2008 9:56 am ET

The only reason this poll reflects a close contest is because the election would be less newsworthy if it wasn't close. Other smaller, more independent news outlets predict a much larger victory for Obama. But if this election was portrayed as a landslide by CNN, then no one would be interested in their coverage.

Ginann   August 20th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Seems that the more US voters know about Obama the less interested they are in voting for him. If you look below the surface of "Change Agent", view his Illinois and US voting record – he isn't the person that he claims to be. Most likely, his ratings have just begun to plummet.

The Democratic Party screwed up big time.

Richard   August 20th, 2008 9:56 am ET

This is just a poll of not even a percent of the registered voters. Plus not very many people these days who would vote for obama have land lines, its those old people who get scared when they see a black man, lol! Come november, McBush will be behind again. I cant belive people think McBush has a better economic understanding over Obama. I think cnn polled those who make over $250k a year(the ones that will get a tax increase) and lets face it people, Nothing is free and the current administration spent so much more money than they had its just pathetic of course look at who spent it, Bush a complete tard! And why are people so focused on drilling, even the oil men are saying its not a solution and the analysts are saying it could be 30 years before it makes any differance. Im sure we can develop an alternative fuel for cars in the mean time. Why dont people use there brains?? McBush would be nothing more than another 4yrs of Bush's ideas and we dont have 4yrs. Plus did anybody see last saturday when McBush was being interviewed by that church guy, All McBush really said was WAR WAR WAR and talked about his STORIES. That should of confirmed a lot for the swing voters that McBush is nothing more than a senile story teller!!

Obama lead was cut because he is making the same mistake Kerry did, underestimating the power of negative Ads. In some states he is hitting hard but not nationaly. I am not a political genius but every one can sense the shift. Come on guys hit back, Hit back. Or simple you will loose.

Only a matter of time until things get EVEN worse for Obama. His time in the lime light is over.

CNN give us the people the methods used in these polls like land lines use vs cell phone use; locations, locations, locations; # of people polled? We then can make up our own minds. Not everyone wants to be spoon feed only the outcomes. For people out there open your eyes and ears we need Obama and the Democrats now more then ever; so you land line users get on board and don't listen to all the lies.

Vote Obama and only Democrats.

CNN do a poll using only internet users.

Boopme   August 20th, 2008 9:54 am ET

And who are they polling? Just wondering, I've asked over 500 people randomly at three different malls, on the street, at 9 different churchs, all multiracial poll. Obama 418 and McCain 82. That's my poll and I think it is just as reliable as yours, so there.

Tommy   August 20th, 2008 9:54 am ET

The mainstream media continues to give McGaff a free ride. Of course he is going to increase in poll numbers. We can see that if the media continues to harp on the negative messages that McGutter is talking about, the american people will take the bait every time. Just look at what happened in 2004. When will we ever learn?

America the Dumbest   August 20th, 2008 9:54 am ET

This is proof AMERICAN'S ARE DUMB or maybe they just like to complain for the past 6 years everyone in America has been complaining about how the country is going down the wrong path. There is a old fellow who is going to continue us down this path but he's the safe chioce. He voted to go to war, he not going to cut your taxes unless your rich, and on top of that he cheated and left his wife. This is the guy you want America eat your heart out. America the Dumbest (makes me want to move to mother Russia.

Trisha CA   August 20th, 2008 9:52 am ET

I think we are now seeing the substance of the two canidates and it is obvious McCain can handle the situations with much more experience and cofindence, especially what is currently happening in Georgia, and we are seeing a more realistic approach to offshore drilling, which Obama was so against at one time.

jsg   August 20th, 2008 9:51 am ET

just remember who is going to be president when this nonsense is all over and your reporting has been as bad as it comes. The pres can sit there and "know" who bad-mouthed him with news and stupid polls all along and put a little check on his personal "poll of reporters".

As a repulican I can't wait until we overturn Roe vs. Wade and nuke Iran. We need to excalate this war in the middle east into an all out nuclear war and start world war III. McCain is the only one who can make this happen. It is written in the bible we just need to make it happen. Praise Jesus!

HS   August 20th, 2008 9:51 am ET

This is a ridiculous story. Is it even a story? And its not even a slow news day. When is the press going to stop trying to inject itself into the news.

Len   August 20th, 2008 9:50 am ET

The reason is very simple.

The American people only listen to negative ads and believe in lies.

The Republicans have lead by fear over the last 8 years and have destroyed our country.

We as Amercians are not very smart and we will suffer another 4 years under McCain. Our debt will continue to grow, the rich will get richer, and we will be in another war. Get ready for the DRAFT....That is the only way we will strengthen our troop strength....So all you who are in favor of war and beat the drums, make sure you are ready to see your sons/daughters/ and grandchildren go off to war..

Dante   August 20th, 2008 9:50 am ET

i think the american people cant be fooled by polls, what happened to the hillary polls. The polls are never conducted with cell phone users and they keep polling the same people.Election polls should be banned because it sells wrong informations to the candidates. Now they attribute mccains bounce to negative adds so that obama can hit hard and at the end of the day the media gets richer..hahaha! No matter what the media says,Obama gonna win this election with a landslide..peace.

Jeff   August 20th, 2008 9:50 am ET

How anyone can say the media is in John McCain's favor with a straight face, i don't know.

I am also sick and tired of people calling me stupid because I would vote for a Republican. You don't know anything about me. I was not and am not really happy with Bush and I am not particularly pleased with McCain as a candidate. But until the Democrats realize that they are better than the alternatives they give us, Republicans will continue to win.

Herbert   August 20th, 2008 9:50 am ET

It is flat out amazing to me that McCain gets any votes at all. Has anyone taken a serious look at our current condition? We are in a recession, the economy is spiraling the wrong way, our standing in the world could not be worst, our military is expended, the list goes on and all these things due to failed Bush policies which McCain promises to keep. Now I'm not saying Obama is the ideal canidate but for goodness sakes people we can not continue on the path we are currently on, we just cant do it, how can America not see that. More people are out of work than ever, wholesale prices are creeping up indicating an inflationary period in the economy, how much more bad news do you want? Obama will at least try and do things differently and at the least we need to try something different than what is currently being done. God help us if McCain wins, the worst is yet to come if he does.

Bill   August 20th, 2008 9:49 am ET

I don't know why anyone would vote for McCain – unless of course you like the idea of war!!!

Just check out the website Vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com to find out the truth about his military career and other 'interesting' facts that the main streem press are not telling you.

The world is tired of the GOP. Obama is the hope of the world! believe me, he might not know this himself. Most American are dump. Don't really think through. what in the world electing a 72 year old sick war prisoner during this time of despair. The strength and influence of America is eroding. I thought Americans were smart people.?

A house divided   August 20th, 2008 9:49 am ET

The democrats have really been their own worst enemies this election cycle. This life long democrat has never witnessed such repugnant behavior within the party.

Are these the NEW democrats of hope, unity and change?

Obama supporters have been LUDACRIS in their undemocratic and vitriolic tactics:
strong-arming at caucus.

calling fellow democrats, a democratic candidate and an ex-president, racist.

Booing and heckling a democratic candidate on her campaign stops.

Threatening to black out the vote or stay home if superdelegates did not vote for Obama.

Songed penned with vulgar insults against a democratic candidate.

Obama himself mocking and jeering HRC.

Your behavior has been subversive to the democratic party ideals and the democratic process iteself.

NOW there is shock- yes shock that the party is divided.

And screams of unity… vote for Obama or else…

You new democrats have lost this election for your candidate by your own nasty undemocratic and vitriolic behavior.

M L Campbell   August 20th, 2008 9:47 am ET

I've said this before and no one seems to have the stones to put it up, but the evidence is clear in all of these posts, so I'll say it again:

If you plan to vote for Obama in November, you have by that choice proven yourself too stupid to properly exercise the right to vote and it should be revoked because you abused it.

You have three months to come to grips with that fact and re-educate yourself before November. After that, well, you can't fix stupid, I suppose.

This is beginning to smell like the last two elections. Polls suggesting a close race despite the fact the Republicans in eight years have completely wiped our our country. How could there possibly be enough brain dead people to account for what the polls are saying? And as to polls in my seventy four years I have never been polled despite voting in every election, maybe I am in the wrong party.

looser   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Linda   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

To the person that knows no one voting for McCain. I know no one voting for Nobama. And I sell in 3 1/2 states. I've seen 2 Obama stickers since this began and both of them were on cars that tell you the people in them are deadbeats that don't work. I dare you to publish this CNN and prove you aren't as biased as you appear nowadays. I am an independent that used to vote Democrat most of the time but I'm sick of deadbeats and illegals that want all my money when I work hard and they sit around on their lazy rumps and whine all day. I might have voted for Hillary though, I'm sick of the men. Who cares if Nobama is black. I care that he's another man. We need a woman! Tired of men running this country. I might even write in Hillary. I bet neither of these lousy candidates will pick a woman VP either. Hey black women, Obama is STILL a man. Did you ever consider that?

Silentwulf   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

I'm sure this won't last long. The American people thrive for change, and McCain can't really deliver that.

Numbers are numbers, and Obama is still in the lead. With his upcoming VP announcment, I'm sure he'll go up by at least 5 points when future polls are conducted.

And for the record, I don't think Democrats should vote McCain just because Hilary lost the primary. I voted for her, and she lost fair and square. Obama is the next best thing, and frankily, he isn't a bad pick.

Hopefully Clinton Democrats won't be complaining about the loss when election day comes, or you can expect an illegal war within the next 4 years.

Hatred drove us away   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Nothing but threats from the Obama supporters this entire primary season.

Now the threats go forward to vowing revenge in 2012- against an unknown democratic candidate- just to "get even".

So... losing one critical election for your candidate and the democratic party is not enough.

You want to lose again in 2012.

Good for you...

Roe v Wade- benefits who most? The HRC over 50 year old supporters who fought for that right for you? Or young people and AAs.

A conservative supreme court will damage who most? The conservative elderly voters? Or the youth?

OBAMABOTS... you have reflected poorly on your candidate and it will have lasting negative effects on the party.

Who wants to be part of the new democrats of vitriol, force, coercion and hatred?

Again...he's lost   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Enough of you democrat poll discounters! Where's that brilliant bunch of intellectuals who wer touting the polls a few weeks back? We need them front-and-center now, emphasizing their faith in the facts.

Moderate Democratic, New York   August 20th, 2008 9:46 am ET

A long time ago, when Obama was surging forward in the primaries, I said the Obama "phenenom" was a wave and that the last time I rode a wave, it crashed and I got sand in my bikini. Well, the wave is crashing and this time I decided to stay out of the water.

Art   August 20th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Which Polls! CNN plays down the fact that they decide which polls to use (and which to exclude). For example about a week ago they had Minnesota as a toss up and reported their poll-of-polls as a 2 point lead for Obama in that state. At the same time Pollster.com had Minnesota as solid Obama with a 12 point lead, but then pollster.com was using all the polls, not cherry picking polls that show a horserace.

Dave G, Minneapolis   August 20th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Both McCain and Obama are seeing their poll numbers decline due to third party influence.
This is why McCain is suing to have Bob Barr removed from the Pennsylvania Ballot. Barr was also "barred" from the "Civil Forum" which is actually a violation of the McCain-Feingold Election reform legislation.

The two parties don't have to work to hard to keep Americans in the dark about other candidates. Dems and Republicans need NO signatures to get on November ballots in all 50 states. "Third" party candidates must get differing amounts of signatures in each state they want to be listed. And McCain's actions to have a candidate removed from the ballot is reminiscent of what Obama did to other candidates in Illinois. Obama sued to have his opponents removed from the ballot. With only one choice–he won.

We should all be outraged at these tactics! If you are voting for either McCain or Obama just because of their party line, you should start looking at the other candidates. Obama and McCain are using sly tactics to keep their stranglehold on America.

Their gain is your loss of freedom.

Election Watcher – hey, just for the record – Obama spent 8, yes 8 years as a Illinois Senator, 3 yrs as a US Senator and is a Harvard educated Constitutional Law Scholar. And 20 yrs devoted to the peoples cause is nothing to sneeze at. Mccain, besides being a pow and cheating his way being fast tracked as an officer has never voted for any substantial bill in his 25 years that would benefit you or it. BTW what do you do? Would you get hired by that CEO??????

emtp JB   August 20th, 2008 9:42 am ET

You just have to make this dramatic, don't you CNN?? The American people are sick and tired of the current failure of a presidency and certainly don't want more of the same (or McSAME). You have to hype up a race so we can get excited that it will be a close race. The nice thing you have done for Obama is that, in general, he has seen an INCREASEin donations every time you espouse this garbage about a close race. At least I can say "Thank you" for that!!!

Jim   August 20th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Obama is showing cracks, he talks a good talk and looks good in a suit, but when hard pressed for real answers that we need, he crumbles. I think his "Change" is just marketing and he has no real answers that haven't already been thought of by hundreds of others.

We need someone that has many years experience with the military and understands how our government works. McCain is the man for the job, he has a unique understanding of war and it's consequences. He isn't niave enough to think that he is going to "Change" the way things have been done in Washington for many decades.

If McCain wins this election then the dumbing down of America will be nearly complete! Those who voted for Bush/Cheney twice and now McCain are destroying America with their narrow-mindedness and shallow thinking. I have never seen so many nitwits who will vote against their own self-interests because of some minor issue that has little to do with the enormous problems facing our country. I'm thinking the polls are, hopefully, wrong and that thoughtful Americans who really care will flock to the polls in droves to facilitate a new direction.

Ted R. from NYC   August 20th, 2008 9:41 am ET

These poll numbers will change again when the VP announcements are made. The conventions will also have an effect. I would expect Obama to maintain a mid-single digit lead through mid-September.

Chris in FL   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

And the world wakes up – FINALLY. It's not too late to elect Hillary Clinton as our nominee. The true leader who will win in November. The DNC made the wrong choice – not that it's their choice to make anyway. Mark my words, Obama will lose in November.

Could it be that Obama is down in the polls because of the rumors as to who will be his VP? I am a Democrat who has decided to vote for McCain because of Obama's choice. Hillary Clinton should have received the Democratic nomination and I am unhappy as to how Obama is treating the Clintons. The economy was much better when Bill Clinton was President so I don't know why everyone bashes him. Besides, Hillary is her own woman and would have made a terrific President.

OBAMA REVOLUTION!   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Obama's lead cut in half? Hahahaha...I don't think so. These polls are so full of s%^T. He's crushing McCain in every way imaginable. I know that here in Denver he is already President. McCain will lose by a landslide. This is all just media contrived bogus hype. It's an Obama nation now, no one wants a 100 year old with an itchy trigger finger running the nation. John McCain is a pathetic liar, a warmongerer, a fearmongerer, and he couldn't possibly be more out of touch with America in the 21st century. We need change and a fresh start, John McCain offers neither, just more of the same failedpolicies and dangerous foreign policy. Obama '08!!!

Many of you may not like her but at least she's actually qualified to be commander in cheif, has the fight in her and has great ideas and most importantly should would be blowing Mccain out of the water right now. The repubs even told you their worst fear was HRC but you didnt listen. If you all were smart you would be praying that by some miracle Hill will walk out of your convention the nominee. We all know thats not gonna happen though b/c all the Obamageddons, the ONC oopps I mean DNC are too far up Obambi's butt to smell the roses. President Mccain, hum? I like the sound of that! America is falling for Republican scare tactics again. It is a shame. Obama is an elitist? Who has the $100 million wife and wears $500 shoes and who grew up on food stamps? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, fool me THREE times then we deserve what we get. Do we really want a man who will be 73 years old before even gets sworn in and has voted the same as Bush over 90% of the time the last eight years? It just doesn't make sense to me. I am from Nebraska one of the most Republican states in the country and I can see that this shouldn't be close. The world showed it wants Obama when he went overseas. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone in the world didn't hate us?

Merica is waking up   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

America is waking up to the fact that what Barack O'blah-blah brings to the table is eloquent lip syncing of words written by others, and the ability to deliver clever sound bytes for his adoring media ...but does not bring much else to the race – especially a lack of any meaningful experience.

Foreign policy -- zero
Holmeland security – zero
military – zero
national experience – zero
international experience – zero
Economic experience – zero

America can and must do better in these troubling times – Maybe in 8 years Obama will be ready, bit not today.

Michelle, PA   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Frank, what you said is very telling of the lousy job the media is doing in this election. Obama is completely overexposed and analyzed down to his shoe size and what some kid who might remember going to second grade with him said one day, but what do we hear about him other than spin? Not his spin, everybody else's spin of him, his words and his actions. We hear "Obama the Elitist jetted off to take vacation in Hawaii", but how many people mention it is the state of his birth, where his extended family still lives? Do we, as a nation, really begrudge a man who's been working 7 days a week for months a visit to his family? How about his energy plan, which he discusses in detail at many rallies and town hall meetings, but you have to be there and hear it in person to know it exists? His tax plan, which again you only hear if you see him in person. The media only covers what it wants to cover, and sadly it hasn't been the serious issues but only what it can make controversial to make this a horse race. What it does cover it frames in ways it can make controversial to sell advertising. It's a shame how low the media in this country has sunk. No wonder the American electorate, who mostly relies on them for information, elects the idiots it does.

Philvis   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Why is it that the Obama supporters can only make comments about McCain calling him names (Mc and whatever clever name they want to put behind it) and calling him the same as Bush. I think they do not realize that McCain is definitely a more liberal leaning conservative. All I hear is, "Obama is going to make change." What change??? He has already said he is raising taxes and he has already shown that he doesn't really have any idea about foreign policy. I still do not fathom how raising taxes for those who are successful is helpful and fair to be quite honest. Those who work hard are going to be penalized and their good success will be trickled down to support those who don't want to work. Hmmm, sounds like good ol socialism to me. People need to get real about Obama. He nothing more than smoke and mirrors with a good smile. The only change he is going to make is to make this great country come even closer to socialism. Maybe he should call up Chavez for some advice.

JD   August 20th, 2008 9:40 am ET

The majority of voters are nyncompoops anyway. And whoever checks the validity of those polls, people can just be spewing out numbers in order to sway the general public thinking in a certain direction. I for one never believe in the veracity of the numbers but I recognize how instrumental the numbers help some dumb voters decide who to vote for instead of paying attention to the candidate's positions on important issues.

Elizabeth   August 20th, 2008 9:39 am ET

IF McCain gets in the White House, our country is going to be in deep trouble! I just hope the American voters will not be so dumb!!! McCain just DOES NOT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Christian – atleast we have hope to look forward to in Obama than more war, more killing of innocent soldiers, more poverty, more high gas prices, more unemployment, more homes in foreclosure in mccain.

James   August 20th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Yes, the slide has been apparent for some time, too many mistakes by Obama, and too many lies by McCain, too much ignorance on the part of potential voters, too much desire to believe that the world in not in serious difficulty. McCain will bring more war, and that will only lead to a greater diminishing of our country and the planet. I hope Obama has something dramatic in reserve, our future depends upon it

Jimbo

John   August 20th, 2008 9:38 am ET

Why Obama's lead cut in half?

Simple answer – the more we know about Obama, we see him dangerous, scarry, weak and much more. That's why he has to keep flip floping on issues because he can't get it right the first time (Georgia crisis and Iran nuclear issues are good examples), but the more he flips flops, the weaker he looks and he will be a LOSER. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IT BUT HE NEEDS SOME MORE EXPERIENCE IN ORDER TO HAVE GOOD JUDGMENTS.

S. Simon   August 20th, 2008 9:38 am ET

People are starting to wake up, no big surprise.

obamacrat   August 20th, 2008 9:37 am ET

I'm no statistician but it seems like the "poll of polls" keeps using a different set of polls each time. Would it therefore be correct to keep comparing the "poll of polls" to previous "poll of polls". Either way I'm not worried. Obama's bump will come after the convention and "real" debates.

David N   August 20th, 2008 9:37 am ET

To prove that Obama is a socialist......

Next week the convention will be visited by the president of a European Socialist party.

This party strongly supports Sen. Obama, that party thinks that paying more than 50% taxes is fair, has great relations with the Cuban regime and with Castro and opposes sending troops to Afghanistan.

Oh did I say it was anti-American.

Sometimes if you look at someone's friends, yo know who they really are....

If you want good change, someone who keeps his promises and is ready to lead the greatest nation on earth, you vote John McCain.

carolflowery   August 20th, 2008 9:36 am ET

You know, it's a funny thing, our economy didnt really start having a down turn until a democractic majority in congress took over, that my friends, is something to think seriously hard about. If you want to be taxed into hell, then well, stick with your man, Obama, if you want security and less taxes, pick McCain, those are the facts

I want the democrats to wake up and smell the roses before its too late. McCain is gradually sneaking up on Obama and will eventually overtake him. The DNC and superdelegates selected the weaker candidate because he is a black american. Democrats go ahead and live in a dream world because the american people want someone who can do the job and not because the person is black and will make history. Forget the history making and elect the stronger and better candidate which, of course, is Hillary Clinton.

Don't wait until November to realize that you have made a mistake and then it will be too late as the republicans step back into the white house. I don't why Obama is being so arrogant with these big rallies and they mean nothing if you cannot win the election. The republicas are sitting back and laughing as the democrats with Obama make fools of themselves with these stupid big rallies.. The republicans must be saying "typical black people". Why is Obama doing such stupid things. I suppose he really has no say as he is just the puppet on the strings and he does what he is told to do.

Hillary, I am behind you 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Terry   August 20th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Frank, Atlanta, GA,

Wake Up. Obama will lose because he did not pick Hillary.
The Hillary voters do not like Obama.
Can't you see 18,000,000 votes!!!!!!
Dont blame anyone but Obama. He has the Presidents job if he uses his head. Thats the problem if it wasn't for the young vote Hillary would be our next president.
End Of Story!!!!!

Marvin Higgins–"Very few people want obama to win anyway the entire system is messed up you guys will do every thing you can to keep a black man from winning its all about race. you idiots."

only people like you make it about race. i'm for neither candidate. does that mean i don't have a race?

(that's how stupid you sound)

Obama supporters–wake up. CNN (and every other news outlet with the exception of Fox News) has been singing the praises of Obama since he got the primary. i've never had a candidate shoved down my throat like the media is doing with Obama.

Bulldog–your statement is completely irrelevent. that's old news. NPR reported it already. but it was a great anti-McCain slip.

Tom Eyemdaman   August 20th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Gail, are you trying scare tactics the same as Democrats claim Republicans do?

Wake up people! Look past Obama's rhetoric, look past his teleprompted speeches, and look at his voting record. Look at his tax plans – look and understand how they will really impact the economy. He's appealing to your emotion by taxing the evil rich, but you need to understand what that taxation will do to EVERYONE. Read up and learn about it now before it's too late. I'm not asking you to vote for McCain – I'm asking you to educate yourself! (The vote for McCain will come naturally after you learn about the issues)

Jennifer in NYC   August 20th, 2008 9:36 am ET

Who are these McSame voters? Do they really like how the country is now?...it seems obvious little will change between the current state of the country under Bush and if McSame is the President. This is really frustrating that there are that many ignoarant Americans out there.

Just wait until the debates begin. Obama is going to blow McSame out of the water.

duke   August 20th, 2008 9:35 am ET

McCain may pull this off. Speaks to the worldwide recognition that Americans are basically dumb. I always thought that McCain seemed not to be very intelligent. I don't agree with Bush policies at all, but I always thought that he was reasonably intelligent. I had no idea that McCain graduated 894 out of 899, oh my goodness. Take this guy's Admiral father away and what do you have?

McCain is scary, he is not very intelligent, and he is extremely scripted......who is pulling the strings? The man cannot think on his feet. Please don't give this guy 5 minutes alone with a foreign leader, most of which are at least intelligent. I don't like Bush, but if I cannot have Obama or Clinton for that matter, give me 4 more years of Bush. No, I mean actually Bush, not McCain. Give me Cheney over McCain. McCain is going to get us into much more trouble than we are already in. Think your belts have had to tighten over the last 8 years......just wait.

What does it say when an academic failure is this close to winning the white house.

If no Obama an no Clinton
Give me George W. Bush / Dick (shoot you in the face) Cheney 08

CNN,

Who are you polling?

How is this polling data a statement of fact based on your limited polling demographic?

You (CNN) would better serve the American people by focusing on the critical issues and not subjective polling data politically geared to further divide the nation.

Francis Michael Xavier   August 20th, 2008 9:35 am ET

As a European, I can tell you that the whole world is not only rooting for Obama but they believe in his sincerity and unique ability! He has brought all the big guns out for the convention and this will really rally the democrats, independents and reasonable republicans together!! Obama must continue doing what he has been doing: resisting the politcss of fear with faith.

Go Obama/America!!

mark   August 20th, 2008 9:34 am ET

I've always admired John McCain's tough honesty and willingness to put country before party. HOWEVER, I am very concerned about the state of our nation has found itself in under GOP dogma.

I was 99.9% sure I was going to vote for Obama in November. Healthcare is my families #1 issue. Our grown daughter is type 1 diabetic. I typcially vote Democrat and am a former '92 Clinton campaign worker (El Paso County CO land of zeolot evangelicals – I no longer live there). Then my Mom (82) asked me if I'd watched the Saddleback summit. I had not. I listened to the entire summit here on CNN. I have to say I am VERY concerned with all the "fluffy" answers Mr Obama gave us. He spent what seemed an inordinate amount of time looking over his shoulder to ensure he was saying politically expedient things.

McCain just answered the questions as if to say 'this is me, I hope you like my answers but if you don't that's ok too'.

Based on McCain's willingness to wrestle and criticize Bush, especially around 2004, I really do not believe we get Bush III. How could we? The country can't sustain it.

I haven't changed my mind, it's no longer near certain though. I think part of the poll slippage is due to all those fluffy answers in that summit.

frustrated democrat   August 20th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Sigh... when will the Democrats learn that you have to be willing to ATTACK YOUR OPPONENT in order to win an election... I know that in this election and the previous one the Democrats have tried to present intellectual arguments in favor of their candidate, more people vote based on fear and emotion as opposed to .. well.. thinking..... If Obama doesn't make people afraid of what a McCain presidency would be like then he will lose. He needs to start putting some negative labels on McCain and making those labels stick. I just hope its not already to late

Ken in Dallas   August 20th, 2008 9:34 am ET

This is proof that the Republican propaganda war machine trumps any campaign of issues and ideas every time. Republicans always go for a lock on the stupid vote, and it works well for them.

America the Gullible.

SSgt Perrry   August 20th, 2008 9:34 am ET

George Bush's record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure. And the part that troubles me most is he seems content with himself.

He will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens' faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been.

John McCain is just like him.

Vote Republician, this what I really want to see again for another 4 years

Reality Check Richmond Virginia   August 20th, 2008 9:34 am ET

Its funny(or sad) that when McCain was talking about issues, he couldn't gain any traction, but over the last few weeks, he has gone negative and has taken the low road and this has helped him. I still say its the nutty right that has come home because of these attacks and that is where the upsurge has occured.

No clear thinking, half intelligent person would be influenced by the McCain campaigns recent plan of attack.

Tim   August 20th, 2008 9:33 am ET

And I hope the gap closes tighter. We can not afford to elect an Obama to the whitehouse. He has the largest campaign staff of any in the history of this country, constantly feeding him information on every subject, for one main reason- So he doesnt say something stupid or make himself look ignorant. Take away his teleprompter, isolate him from his brains (his campaign staff), and stick him in a town hall meeting with John Mccain. Mccain would eat his lunch and make him look flat silly, and he knows it, and is why he refuses to accept the many joint town hall meetings that Mccain has proposed. We saw at the Saddelback forum how bad mccain can make obama look. He is so much stronger, smarter, sharper, and experianced than the babbling, calculating Obama, who seems to always try to fit his answers around what he knows the current audiance wants to hear.

Mccain/Romney 2008.

It's too early for polls to mean much, but I don't mind Obama needing to play a little catch-up. It'll keep him and his supporters from getting overconfident.

The stupidity of the American voter is not a thing to underestimate. It should have been an impossibillity for Bush to get a second term after the mess he made in his first one, but, lo and behold, he won in 2004. And everybody (except a stubborn and brain-dead 19% or so, who'd vote for an ashtray of Dobson told them to) regrets that now. But, have they learned from it? Apparently not. At one point I thought McCain would be a competent choice, but after listening to him and seeing the way he's run his campaign, I honestly think he might end up being WORSE than Bush. But he may win anyway... this country has become THAT stupid and THAT self-destructive. Too many sheeple brainwashed by politicalized pastors and talk-radio will do exactly what they're told to do, even if it's obvious it'll destroy the country.

JP   August 20th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Bulldog not all families accept their half sibilings. Happens in American everyday. As for the polls going up for Mr. O, sure they will for a week and then the Reps. have their convention and it gets tighter again. Mr. O is not going to make it to the presidency. More than likely he will chose some guy who is not a threat to his intelligence and he will be a running mate. When he does that, then you will see how intelligent him and his advisors are. I have never wanted nor will I vote for someone who speaks one thing and then says he didn't mean to say that in another breath. Funny thing, no one knows what he means. McCain will take him in Nov. Sorry folks....

What will will be   August 20th, 2008 9:29 am ET

If such polls make you guy sleep well, good luck! Come November, polls or no polls voters will speak loud and clear and you will understand that America is no land of fools! After having a president that needs help to peel his banans, I will eat up my old hat if the voters vote in another one to continue in same direction!

Can somebody, anybody please explain why we want this failed foreign and domestic policy to continue.

mcbush sux   August 20th, 2008 9:27 am ET

when referring to mccain draft, don't just concentrate on unemployed eighteen year olds who can't even drink in our backwards country....instead look in the mirror, we have a bunch of felons serving in iraq now, bush is relying on 20 min. trailers people are forced to watch now in movie theatres, and the enlistment age is up to 38 now.....mccain's draft will mean experienced professionals, aka most reservists, will be overseas somewhere, we are already preparing a third front in georgia to artificially prolong mcbush's war economy......apparently the only economy he knows anything about....just don't ask him to find a place on the map!!!!

Richard J H   August 20th, 2008 9:25 am ET

all you people who disrespect this country, the one and only Hegemon, and say it is doing so bad, "in a cesspool", need to "regain respect", etc. ARE IN THE MINORITY!

Most citizens are proud of their country so when obama degrades the country that allowed him to be where he is and tells the world that the largest power in the world needs to do better, it offends those of us who KNOW that we are already the best and need not defend our actions. That is why he fails. That is why he will lose.

james   August 20th, 2008 9:25 am ET

I think we need to check how these polls are conducted. I've heard reports that they were done over land-line phones. This could skew the results quite a bit towards Mccain, just like Dewey over Taft.

You watch, Obama's going to disprove all the polls in a much larger win than they predict.

Veteran in Kansas   August 20th, 2008 9:24 am ET

What we need is a President that thinks before he acts or even speaks. I do not look at the Obama response to the Georgia situation as indecisive, I look at it as a measured thought process, rather than a knee jerk reaction.

My advice to Obama, honor McCain as a veteran, recognize his suffering as a POW. On everything else attack, attack, attack, remember a good defense is a strong offense, keep McCain on the defense don't give him a chance to gather his thoughts, his true colors will come out.

Silo   August 20th, 2008 9:24 am ET

This should surprise no one. Senator Obama is proving to be a well-spoken empty suit with a stong liberal bent. His performance last Saturday night only highlighted his clear lack of experience. There is only so long the MSM can cover for him. Senator McCain on the other hand, for all his flaws, comes across as experienced and a man of conviction. Equally important, he is center-right on most issues, right where the majority of the electorate is. This is far from over, but Senator McCain may end up winning this election the same way he won the primaries–slow and steady.

Edward Lim   August 20th, 2008 9:23 am ET

I cannot believe so many people support John McCain. It's truly ridiculous. Haven't we learned from Bush? McCain is Bush number 2!

Patricia Walton   August 20th, 2008 9:23 am ET

Whom are these polls polling? I admit I do not understand how the polls work, but don't the outcome of these polls depend upon demograhics, etc.? At any rate, I don't think the American people are that much concerned about these polls, as they change daily and weekly and are really not a telescopic representation of the nation as a whole. I don't care what any polls say - Obama will win and point this country in the right direction.
(Also, we are all sick and tired of hearing McCain talking relentlessly about his POW story to gain sympathy - that was almost 40 years ago for God's sake -enough is enough!! McCain is surely a POW, which stands for Pathetic, Old and White.)

Christina P, Buffalo NY   August 20th, 2008 9:23 am ET

People are finally getting smart.

He might go up after naming a VP and he might not.

He might go up after his speech and he might not.

It's time he and his supporters face the fact that not everyone wants to belong to a cult or be a sheep. There are still enough of us left who can thing for themselves. We just don't like the hateful comments of his supporters and don't want to be one of them.

I am not a racist, not stupid, or still mad about Sen. Clinton and I am neither a Dem. or a Rep. Just someone who does not trust the Obama's.

Nick   August 20th, 2008 9:22 am ET

Great piece of news, except for the fact we have heard and seen this occurrence in politics dozens of times. As frightening for democrats as this reality may be, must this all come as a surprise? Sure his lead has dwindled, but the lead is still apparent. Barack Obama is simply experiencing what the world calls competition. All I can is say is ride the wave Barack.

Anthony   August 20th, 2008 9:22 am ET

Negative attack ads work, as we saw in 2004.

Obama needs to get smart about these attack ads before it destroys his chances to win. I don't care about playing nice guy at this point, his campaign should be attacking McCain in ads from here on out. Not blaming McCain for the Bush-era problems, but all out attacking him/

Come on, man! you're running for president! Show some guts.

I think the Warren forum hurt Obama badly. McCain seems to have gotten better at sound bites. He was clearly just using campaign slogans and neo-con talking points. Sadly that plays well with a lot of Americans. What was Obama thinking walking into a auditorium full of evangalists? Not his crowd. McCain clearly out flanked him on that one. Obama has to tighten up his tactics, and stop giving advantage to McCain. He also has to handle the Clintons.

Both candidates have positives and negatives. Depending on the major news events of the week probably influences the polls more than anything as to which appears to be the best candidate. I would remind both partisans that voting Dem or Repub because they are the answer is not very bright. Both parties have a lot to be ashamed of. Neither party has shown the ability to govern effectively. Both are better at being the opposition party. Neither party has the answer to any of the problems and both seem unable to look at solutions without partisanship being the major factor. For example just saying no to drilling is not proposing a solution. Neither is drill, drill, drill. Cutting taxes doesn't cure cancer, neither does raising them. Both parties need to understand simple things like that. If they can't they need to become extinct.

diana   August 20th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I dont think a running mate will do much good because thats exactly what he is is a vice president and how much can they do if the president disagrees.....like a lot of the promises they make they really cant do anything without the house or the senate

Intelligent voters see more substance in McCain's leadership capabilities and less in Obama's lack of executive experience.

Oprah and CNN may 'push' Obama, but in November that 'push' won't work.

Dave   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

I don't think these polls mean very much at this point. After the candidates name their running mates and after the conventions, the campaign will really start. I also think that when the candidates debate in a real forum, not one designed by evangelical Christians, John McCain will lose ground. I'm not saying that Barack Obama is invinceable - he needs to "dummy down" his answers because the average American is looking for short sound bites like those provided by McCain and, unfortunately, race is going to be an issue.

Alex in NC   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

He's losing steam because the truth is he is an inexperienced naive less than one term senator. He has zero foreign policy or leadership experience and voted "present" over 100 times in the Illinois state senate. John McCain has a proven record of working across the aisle and getting things accomplished for the country and what is right for America. He is an American hero and will be the 44th President of the United States.

Her sister, Kathy, is content that her and Cindy's dad gave Cindy the family business and only gave her $10,000 in his will, but she is pissed that Cindy continually lies to the media about being an only child.

Cnn I can tell you one reason you are surprised that the polls show the Gap is so close. You do not get a real read off your blogg because most of your writers like this one deletes any negative statements that is made concerning Obama and his wife. Apparently your writers and moderates(most) or so in the tank for Obama they do not let most people post that have negative info by either deleting or saying it is a duplicate and it never shows up under the article. They try to slant the input as Jack Cafferty of cnn does by reading 4 comments three poitive for Obama and a half negative toward him. But guess what you cannot stop a vote against Obama.. I use to watch CNN and thought it was far and balanced in its tv coverage and writing. Now I watch about five minutes of cnn and apparently have to see which of the people write the article and ask for comments to see if they will be posted. I do not know if the writers moderate their own or have someone elde doing it. Either way whoever is doing this is a disgrace to the audience , to cnn and ought to be fired.

Geoz   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

negative works... but that still doesn't make it right Senator McCain.

Mike in Chicago   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Once again our current administration shows it unable to make a move without issuing hollow threats. Mr. McCain will be a perfect choice if we want to continue the failed policies of the past 8 years leaving us with few allies and a tired and poorly equipped military.

Foreign observer   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Still poll statistics. In fact it is still 50:50 as it´s been all the time.

Lucas, Nashville TN   August 20th, 2008 9:14 am ET

Big deal. They'll go up and down a hundred times between now and the election.

Jennifer Miller   August 20th, 2008 9:13 am ET

No surprises here, who wants to elect a non-experience candidate such as Obama, whom the only experience is few years in the Senate and as a community organizer does not make him qualified to be a US president. He needs to gain more experience and the he can try again in the future. Better candidates are Clinton and McCain.

Any thing CNN has to say about Obama is ALWAYS on the down side so your pole of poles CNN doesn't say much to me except your trying very hard to keep the same old money grubbing bunch (who have ran our economy into the ground ) running the country. Now, since you have mostly cut out my comments because I don't (evidently) spout your propaganda, I'll not expect you to post this either.
P.S.... The one bright star you have on your staff is Jack Cafferty.. It's too bad you don't have the good sense to give him a full time slot. But then, he does seem to be more PRO OBAMA then the rest of you "news team"... *NOTE TO JACK* Your commentary tuesday was right on the money... Thank you !!!!!

The only way that " War Monger" McCain can get a few more votes, is when he is talking about his only expertise , war. On every other issue, he is in the weeds......

This will change once Biden is firmly in the co-pilot's seat.

Obama just can't bring himself to stoop to McCain's slimy level, but Biden has no trouble hitting back hard. And since McCain started the dirty stuff after promising to run a clean campaign on the issues, I have no problem seeing Joe mop the floor with him while Obama stays with the inspirational, unity and domestic policy message he does best. Add in Biden's foreign policy credentials, and they'll be unbeatable.

Obama/Biden 08!

Rose   August 20th, 2008 9:13 am ET

I am not at all surprised by Obama's drop in the polls. His response to the Russian, Georgia conflict showed his lack of judgment in this type of matter. He has boasted that judgment is better than experience so often. His response just shows he is not prepared for this type of world issue. All he has talked about was that he was against the Iraq war from the onset, however, he also admitted that if he was in the US Senate at the time of the vote he is not sure how he would have voted. Judgment we can't believe in.

Deniese   August 20th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Who cares!!!!!!!!!! He's still gonna be POTUS.

Marc M   August 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Overwhelming positive coverage? Don't you mean overwhelming biases reporting and the creation of new where there is none?

Has there been anything else from the media?

Your supposed to report the news, not create it or put your personal spin on it. It's a shame what the media has become.

Chris, NJ   August 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Well keep in mind that the only poll that matters is taken on Nov. 4th and I have no doubt in my mind that when that time comes America will realize that all the "change" Obama is offering is more of the same that the 2006 democrat congress' "accomplishments"

I'm sure all the obamamaniacs will be here saying, "Oh it's ok.. still a 3 point lead" but when a bunch of left leaning polls show obamas lead dropping that significantly it means something. Thank you America for finally realizing that obama is nothing more than a creation of the media and is in no way fit to lead our country.

WILLIE   August 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

In the wake of Russia's aggression, how can we ever negotiate peace from a stand of weakness. Obama would make us vunerable to attack should we ever give up our nuclear weapons. The next Georgia they invade might have a city called Atlanta. You can't negotiate with terrorists! Lord help us if Obama gets elected.

S.M   August 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Sometimes the polls depend on the demographic area and who you're asking. Have they asked any of the inner city poverty stricken communities who they would vote for, or are the majority of people that they're asking are white? Many times you can't depend on the polls because there are those who may be for a particular candidate but are afraid to say for fear of backlash from friends and family. The real, provided they don't cheat.

Anonymous   August 20th, 2008 9:12 am ET

And Reuters/Zogby has McCain up by seven points.

People really are stupid, and the stupid people make all the really important decisions in this country.

Are we really going to elect the empty-rhetoric, rah-rah, kill-the-terrorist, drill-here-drill-now, simpleminded doddering old fool based on quick quips and foolish mono-syllabic soundbites given with no sense of thought or careful consideration?

This coiuntry is in a cesspool and looking to go deeper.

NObama has no foreign experience to lead America through any crisis with Russia, China, Iran, etc.

NObama has no economic experience to lead us through any recession or downturn in the economy.

NObama is not ready to lead. Hopefully NObama picks a VP that can tell him what to do if he is elected or America is in for some trouble.

NObama needs more expierence before he is ready to be president.

Greg   August 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Hmmmm. I wonder why? Obama has only been on vacation for a whole week, a book full of lies and distortions against Obama was released, McCain was double-downed on his negative ads........

What's worrisome is that with all of his experience, "straight talk", RNC money-backing, lobbyist-support, McCain can't seem to pull out ahead of Obama!

Watch what the polls do for the next 2 weeks as Obama comes out swinging, he makes his VP pick, and the convention show Americans who really needs to run this country!

Ernie Puto   August 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

For those of us objectively looking at this race and the media coverage of Obama find the following quote in this article quite humorous:

"But the recent downturn in the polls for Obama may not last — the Democratic White House hopeful is headed for a week of what is likely to be overwhelmingly postive(sic) coverage as he names his running mate and officially accepts his party's presidential nomination."

And how would this be different than the last year of Obama coverage?
When has he not gotten "overwhelmingly positive coverage"?

RAJAMANNAN   August 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Dear Barack Obama:

I am for you 100%. Please ATTACK JOHN MCcAIN LEFT AND RIGHT AND SELECT A VERY GOOD VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

MCCAIN IS A CHEAT AND A LIAR. YOU HAVE TO ATTACK HIM ALLA THE WAY, OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE LOTS OF DIFFICULTIES.

MCCAIN AND ROVE AND LIMBAUGH ARE TOGETHER AND ATTACKING YOU ALL THE WAY TO THE POLLS.

Marvin Higgins   August 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

I am sick of polls, they are not reliable. There are over 300,000,000 million people in this country a small sampling of does not reflect anything. The should be outlawed I am been a registered voter for over forty years I have never been called for for a poll nor has my wife. Very few people want obama to win anyway the entire system is messed up you guys will do every thing you can to keep a black man from winning its all about race. you idiots.

Charlotte   August 20th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Too pompous..Grandios posturing, and completely unready to lead. His presidential looking seal, his grandstanding in Denver. I don't think I have ever witnessed such self-importance in a candidate. He is caught up in the media hype. I hope he knows, it is a long way to the ground when you fly so high. Obama is the current, Hanna Montana of politics.

Adam   August 20th, 2008 9:10 am ET

The Press...what a bunch of sensationalist idiots they are in this country. They so want to push this narrative of "Bad news for Obama," and yet he has led McCain since day one. However, not one word about what legitimately looks like a huge problem for McCain himself...the fact that he simply cannot get out of the low 40's in any of the polls. 41, 42, 43...they seem to be his ceiling, and the press, naturally, won't tell you that he can't win with those percentages. Of course not....it's Obama in trouble, that's the theme. McCain seems to have reached his peak at around 43%, which, gee if I'm look at 100% being the total, and 50% being the middle...would seem to indicate that McCain is the one in trouble. Leave it to the press...total sensationalist idiots.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   August 20th, 2008 9:10 am ET

I can't believe McCain is claiming some sort of experience lead. He can't communicate without a teleprompter (and even then, with stilted difficulty). He is as anti-intellectual and anti-science as George W. He has no sense of geography or history-as demonstrated by his "wikipedia-lifted" speeches. There may be an empty suit in the presidential race, but I don't think it is Barack Obama. Even his tired stories of his prisoner-of-war days appears to be plagiarized from Aleksander Solzhenitsyn's time in a gulag. The story shifts with political expediency. I'm afraid McCain is a Chauncey Gardner (google Peter Sellers "Being There"). When he makes a candid statement it usually refers to people as "jerks", "my friends", or even schools for spoiled children (a reference to his wife's alma mater). He graduated 494 out of 499 at West Point. Is it possible that he is dumber than George W.? How about empty rhetoric challenging Barack's patriotism? Hey, anyone can do that. John McCain was born in Panama. We can start there.

G. Canada   August 20th, 2008 9:10 am ET

I think more than ever Barack Obama needs to choose Hilary Clinton as his running mate for VP or he will never come out the winner in November..

Redphilly   August 20th, 2008 9:09 am ET

As it gets closer to election day it seems "certain" people are beginning to have cold feet. But don't be dismayed. Whomever Barack choose to be vice, they will whip this country into tip top shape. Whereas McCain will treat us like the Republicans have for the last 8 years. Like they say Marie Antoinette treated France. He doesn't even know what is like to be poor, which he proved when he said 5 million was rich. He is out of touch with us. Don't choose him just because of his color. It is not enough.

Jason   August 20th, 2008 9:09 am ET

I am sure that sooner than later Obama will rise higher than ever, All he need to do is to make Americans know that America is not all about war. He most break the Psychological warfare of the Republican by putting fear in the heart of Americans just to (RULE) them just the way Gorge Bush did.

America needs a peace maker not another Blood Oil War

Nigeria

Kevin   August 20th, 2008 9:09 am ET

The trick is to respond quickly to attacks. Kerry waited around and did nothing. Obama waited around, but then began to resond slowly. If you don't counter the attacks immediately, those attacks define you and sit in people's consciousnesses (can't spell). I think it's time to let out the Biden and Clinton attack dogs.

edward sevume sweden   August 20th, 2008 9:08 am ET

Alas, Obama is too soft in his approach to McCain. History shall tell if Obamas tactic of refraining from using dubious campaigning tactics in order to win was right or wrong.
It appears that the audience loves McCains way of doing things and it is paying off judging from the opinion polls.
The tactic is to attack the opponents weaker points, repeat the message over and over again. This is a simple principle in psychology. With time, the message gets inplated in the hearts and minds of the audience as being true! On the day when americans, especially those who are undecided, go to the voting booths, they will remember McCains message – a message that instills the belief that America can solve all problems by military means. A message whereby experince far ways heavier than making good judgements.
Att the end of the day, it is the propensity of making good judgments by the populace that shall play the decisive when it comes to putting in place the right leader in the white house, a leader that the world shall look upon in helping to solve the ills of the world.

Frank   August 20th, 2008 9:08 am ET

The problem with Obama, as we get closer to election day, is that no one really knows who he is or where he stands on issues... He is walking very close to the fence trying to sell to both conservatives and liberals... Contrast this with McCain who has a long record in the Senate... People either hate him or love him, but they do it based on his record and where he has stood on issues in the past(tanglible...

Who is Obama?

I think he will have to choose Hilary if he has any chance of winning–he simply does not have what it takes on his own. If that includes Bill, so be it. I am pretty sure, in spite of the cloak and dagger stuff, he really has no choice–the DNC is running the ship–Obama probably has very little say in this matter.

joe bob from georgia   August 20th, 2008 9:07 am ET

when he names his vp candidate & its name is not hillary rodham clinton, john mccain will take his first lead in the polls. after john mccain beats him in three head to head debates after the conventions, obama will need to learn how to say president mccain.

Nancy   August 20th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Why doesn't CNN shut their mouth and let the American people think for themselves. McCain is now getting a free ride even though he hasn't the energy or the intelligence to make an informed comment. If you listen to his speaches carefully, you will notice that they are full of "fluff". Since when is a thoughtful, careful answer wrong? John McCain is another "my way or the highway" man instead of listening to people who know more than him about the subject at hand. Barack Obama will listen to the facts from all aspects before jumping into a bad decision. Unlike Bush and McBush. You will not find a better leader than Barack in this race for the White House. Think carefully voters before letting the pity stories lead you into a wrong decision.

SaneTexan   August 20th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Funny that CNN still shows their candidate- Obama with a lead over McCain when other polls show McCain with a 5 point lead.
Really not that surprising since you beat Hillary to death to get Obama the nomination. There is some justice in the world though. It will all backfire on the biased media and Obama's mean-spirited supporters come November though.

Objective Reader   August 20th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Polls only reinforce that the Presidential election is a popularity contest with little to do with experience or qualifications. Obama has no experience in anything that prepares him for an executive position at Walmart let alone the Presidency. He is highly charismatic and demonstrates high ethical values, a nice guy most of us would like to know, but that shouldn't qualify someone to be President.

BigBear   August 20th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Maybe all of those people who thought Obama would bring change have realized that his record has failed to support any ability of his to make change. He has never done it in 47 years and it would be extremely difficult for him to bring about change that matches his rhetoric, even if he had made changes during his prior attempts.

Hello!!!   August 20th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Hillary on the ticket would give him a huge lead. Otherwise, he will lose to John McCain. Seeing how McCain is becoming a stronger candidate, who knows what could help Obama other than adding Hillary......dems will never learn.

Are we as a Nation really that stupid?   August 20th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Do we really want more of the same? Why aren't we tired of the Republican's trickle down policies? Is anything of value trickling down to you? Why don't we give someone new a chance to do better? Do you really think he can do worse than our current president who was elected not once but twice? Are we really going to let fear mongering sway us yet again?

R Wolf   August 20th, 2008 9:05 am ET

What a bunch of elitist junk. Do you think the majority of Americans have the time or inclination to go to the internet and vote on your polls? Do you think the millions of people who actually work for a living, the true backbone of America, the ones who will vote for Obama, care about your polls? Obama is winning over poor, wealthy and all the millions of people in between and the voting booths in this Country will reflect that in November.

Jose Vazquez   August 20th, 2008 9:05 am ET

As the nation gets to know the extreme liberal positions of Senator Obama his lead has and will continue to shrink. The fact is he is on the wrong side of several important economic and social issues. On the economic side his welath redistribution plan is un-american. Since when do we take money from people that save work hard and decide that they have enough? Also the fact that he is agianst Drilling for oil, and nuclear energy is hard to accept. We are sending $700 Billion a year to foreign countries and we coudl keep a significant portion of that money right here in the good old USA. Also the infrastructure needed to Dirll for our oil and to buid nuclear facilities will create 100,000's of great payingjobs on a short and long term basis. Lastly Senator Obama's radical voting record on abortion issues makes him unelectable. I recognize that Senator McCain is not the best canidate but he is MUCH better than Senator Obama.

Phil in KC   August 20th, 2008 9:04 am ET

He will get a bounce after he names his VP (despite howls of protest from the Clinton camp) and after the convention. Of course, the question is, will he get a bigger bounce than McCain?
I also have to question the accuracy of the polls in this day and age. Since Obama has a fairly large youth following and that demographic has largely abandoned land lines in favor of cell phones as their lone phone line, I suspect they're not being polled.
This is going to be an interesting election.

ty   August 20th, 2008 9:04 am ET

of course his lead is cut in half u cover this guy all the time(LIke what he eatin for breakfast).. and then he get the most criticism bc of the coverage.. I noticed when McCaine was asked about his position on abortion, Rick Warren didn't ask hit "what about in a case of rape, incest or where the pregnancy could result in death for the mother and baby". It was so obvious to see Obama was set up. I smell Karl Rove. As for the developments in Georgia, that's what happens when you continue to refer to your country as the last superpower. They're sitting on just as many nukes as we are, and I think that constitutes them to be a superpower. Is it a conicidence in the 60s when they invaded their neighbors we were tied up in Vietnam and today being tied up in Iraq has led to the same thing.
If McCaine wins he will finish what Bush has started, the total destruction of this country!

John Starnes   August 20th, 2008 9:03 am ET

It absolutely boggles the mind that this race could be close, with McCain having SO adeptly demonstrated that he is as inept, shallow and clueless as Bush, for whom he has voted 95% of the time the last 8 catastrophic years. But since 52 million Americans ignored the cold reality staring them in the face and voted for a SECOND term for Bush, I guess I should not be surprised that they could be buffaloed by McCain's "straight talk" and "having been a POW makes me qualified to lead America" mantra. The sad thing is, the rest of us plus the world have to pay the price for their choosing to remain uninformed.

Gaylord   August 20th, 2008 9:00 am ET

Actually, I don't think the poll has a whole lot to do with McCain's attack ads. I think it has more to do with his flip-flopping antics and his failure to beat out McCain in the Rick Warren debate. I'm pro-Obama and I think we can all acknowledge that he's a smart guy. But, he needs to stop showing us how smart he is and go on the offensive with McCain or he's gonna lose. He needs smart, quick answers instead of his long, over-analyzed answers. I'm also anti-Clinton, but at this point, I think he has to suck it up and pick her as VP. He needs someone to do his dirty work. He needs an attack dog.

EMPTY HEADS VOTE FOR EMPTY SUIT McCAIN.   August 20th, 2008 9:00 am ET

Lee, New York City   August 20th, 2008 9:00 am ET

The problem is that people are now learning more about Obama and they don't like what they see. He cannot speak well without a teleprompter or script in front of him.

He is for partial-birth abortion, will promote programs that will make American's taxes skyrocket (universal health care, big government entitlement programs, etc), and is a SOCIALIST. People are seeing that he has made friends with people who are very questionable (Rev. Wright, former Undergrouwd Weathermen, etc) and this makes them wonder about his judgement.

On top of all this, he is INEXPERIENCED. This article states that he is heading into a period of "positive news coverage" with the convention, however that is ALL HE HAS RECEIVED FROM THE PRESS since he came on the scene. People just don't see in him qualities that would make a good President.

So, the Media will continue to make it look like this is a close race.

Infact, the only way that John McCcain can become the next president of the United States of America is if the "DIEBOLD" voting machines function like they did in Florida and Ohio in the last two presidential elections !!

John Mc Can't won't become president unless the Neo-Conservative Corparatists and the "Scare and Unbalanced" Media steal it !!

The Media seemms to have decided to suport the old fart that got shot down 3 times in Vietnam (failure- not war hero) and spent most of the war as a "privilaged" POW , divorced his wife to marry a schemish (but wealthy) Heiress, laundered tax-payer money in the Keating Five/Saving & loan Scandal, supports unjustified and privatized warfare over much needed domestic welfare AND wants to continue much of the failed foreign and domestic policies of the Bush / Cheney disaster politics Agenda.

God help us ALL.....................

In spite of it all....I'll still vote for Barack Obama this November, because it's the right thing to do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been an Obama supporter from the begining and thought they had a rough primary, and I've actually resented Clinton up til now. but hopefully we really can put everything behind us and unite. Clinton supporters have done amazing things with their 18 million supporters, and I know that combining powers with the Obama supporters anything is possible.

OBAMA/CLINTON 08!

BJ, Texas   August 20th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Hey libs, that whooshing sound your hear. It's the hot air coming out of Nobama's balloon. Finally the American people are waking up and realizing what a fake this guy really is. He's anti-American, anit-military, an elitist, his pastor mentor is a hate monger, he has terrorist friends, he voted for killing babies if born alive after a botched abortion, what else can you say. To top it all off, Russia invades a soveign democratic country and what does he say about it, that both parties should sit down and talk. If a burglar breaks into your house in the middle of the night to steal your property and rape your wife or daughter are you going to offer him coffee and have a chat?

Sofia   August 20th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Give this a break, we see him jump and go down. This is ridiculous, find some actual news.

Can't wait to read this comment section in a little bit. His kool-aid drinking minions will be claiming racism and lies. All that is happening is America is finally becoming un-brainwashed from the main stream media's love affair of the great Messiah

The US is full of retards   August 20th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Anyone who votes for John McCain is voting to ruin the United States of America. Stop being so retarded. For th love of god, don't you see that this is just like when people voted for George Bush's second term . If you are going to vote for John McCain, I would like to go to your house and punch you square in the face. Please email me your address and I will come over.

McCheat knows Pentagon foreign policy. Obama understands the world. He knew the difference between Shia and Sunni before he went to Washington. McCheat still needs whisperers to differenciate the 2 sects.

McCheat will have NO cone of leaks before the Presidential debates.

How many times many of you have to hear "Obama is not ready to be President of the USA" if he waited for few more years to get more experience it could happen but now it is very big RISK.
Most African Americans have been driven by the race and not the reality.
However this is all foult of DNC and their leadership pushing its way to get out of the race all good and qualified candidates, and now playing cards on "UNITY"- come on people.

Ace   August 20th, 2008 8:55 am ET

If anyone watched Obama on the Rick Warren special, and then McCain, this is understandable. Obama doesn't know what he stands for, and if he doesn't have a written speech, he sounds like this: "Well, I, ehh.. uhm.. errh... uhh... well... let me see..". No wonder Obama didn't want the town hall style debates that McCain wanted to have. McCain will whip him in the debates.

Natasha   August 20th, 2008 8:55 am ET

Do you think we trust CNN and the polls of polls. W.A. you are really going to make this about you........ We are not worried, we know what will happen.

Election Watcher   August 20th, 2008 8:55 am ET

Think of it this way; if the CEO of a troubled corporation were stepping down, should his replacement be a floor manager with a couple of years experience?

unity   August 20th, 2008 8:55 am ET

Gallup – historically one of the lowest polls for Obama was used in this poll average heavily. I take this one with a big grain of salt with it being the end of summer transition time. Next week's polls should be much higher and more of a truer picture.

ANGIE   August 20th, 2008 8:55 am ET

JB, Boston   August 20th, 2008 8:54 am ET

35% of the posts will be HRC fans saying "Hillary would be running away with this by now", "she is the only one who can lead" blah blah blah

35% will be from Obama fans screaming that polls mean nothing blah blah blah

To the HRC supporters, maybe if you weren't such crybabies and voted for YOUR parties nominee, Obama wouldn't be neck and neck with McCain, and therefore your argument that Hillary could do better is INVALID, because of your manipulation.

To the Obama supporters, don't be a hypocrite. You cannot claim victory in certIain polls and poo poo those that don't tell the story you want to hear.

There CNN, I summed up the responses to this post. Can we close it and move on?

Charlotte   August 20th, 2008 8:54 am ET

Not surprising considering his flip-flopping on major issues and his plan to rebuild Georgia when our own Georgia needs help. He is a joke and a novice on the national scene. Come to think of it, he is a novice in the US Senate. Maybe people are finally waking up to his lack of experience in a lot of areas. I see no reason, thus far, to cast a vote for Obama. I don't like McCain either, so I'll still write Hillary on my ballot

R. L. Reedy   August 20th, 2008 8:53 am ET

Watch Obama's "lead" shrink more and more as his panty waist politics are exposed time after time. Do the words "silent majority" ring a bell, people??????

D R   August 20th, 2008 8:53 am ET

That shows you what negative McCain attacks will do. And worse, it shows how little this country cares about the serious condition it's in. McCain voters get ready for world war three! You have a very senile, quick tempered old man, with a chip on his shoulder!

DCM IL   August 20th, 2008 8:53 am ET

Its about time this country is starting to wake up. Has anyone looked at what shape IL government is in ? Why don't he do some of his work here where he is already elected ( by defalt ) . He has not done one thing for this State!! I can"t believe that people want him in charge of the whole Country!!

fella from Chicago   August 20th, 2008 8:53 am ET

Don't look now hare, but the tortoise is about to overtake you. Lots of pro-Obama rhetoric now, but when the people get in the privacy of the voting booth in November, they'll go with the proven track record of an American hero with his 26 years of governmental service to this country. Nothing against you Barack, but John McCain is just the better fit for the job.

Charlotte   August 20th, 2008 8:53 am ET

These polls mean absolutely nothing. The poll, that matters is Election day! BTW, no one has ever polled me, so who is being polled? Every day it's a different poll and numbers. No one knows the true accuracy on either side. it's amazing though how the media tries to slant and to skew numbers to affect the outcome. I hope people will not be persuaded by "polls". vote your own mind and heart no matter which candidate you support.

The Europeans shudder and shake their heads in disbelief that we are so stupid to elect much of the same!

Just go away Nobama, the sooner the better.

It's impossible that McCain is this close. His entire campaign is composed of making fun of Obama from 12:00 to 4:00 M-F and going to bed at 5:00 PM .

This is just media propaganda to make people feel the election is close and keep their ratings high. We went to war to make the rich richer. The media is no less corrupt, these polls are all about money.

Ian   August 20th, 2008 8:50 am ET

Why is that surprising to anyone. I do not think that with a party in disarray we are going to win this one. The DNC made a fatal mistake by thinking that they will pick a candidate for us and then we will follow like cattle. WRONG… never take away the will of the people.

My vote was taken away then as a gesture of "goodwill" I got back 1/2 my vote but to the DNC please no favors we need to go by the "rules". Now I am an independent and will vote for McCain in November.

Obama if you really want party unity pick Hillary as your running mate and you will win in November; I guarantee it. If you are not having a serious run pick anyone else. She is the other strong candidate. This is so simple it baffles my mind.

Mike - Texas   August 20th, 2008 8:47 am ET

Obama is in trouble.

Kerry was up on Bush by 24 points leading into the democratic convention 4 years ago and Gore led by a large margin as well.

Historically, the democratic candidate is ususally up 20 – 25 points over his republican rival at this time of year. So, to only be up by 3 points and within the margin of error does not bode well for Obama.

With the way the economy is, either one of those 2 candidates would have probably been up by 40 points or more over Bush.

Hillary would have been a LOT stonger cadidate.

Christina P, Buffalo NY   August 20th, 2008 8:46 am ET

We'd better stop partisan bickering and get down to who is best for bringing this country together and getting things done. If Obama's campaign hasn't been a shining example of that, I don't know what people need to see. Put party allegiances aside – and let's handle the United States of America's business!! (I guess that makes me Independent, non-partisan is common sense!!) Let's stop dividing ourselves – because we are getting nowhere ... unless you're an oilman.

Elizabeth   August 20th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Isn't it like CNN, Rooney, to post a big negative headline about Obama. The CNN headline is not news...Where is the news? A couple of weeks ago when McCain started to utter his superficial rhetoric to appeal to the non thinking republicans (echoed by a non thinking news service), the polls started to change. The fact is that Obama and his supporters know that it will be an uphill battle, because the swift-boat liars and the publication of the Obama Nation book, a pack of lies, is what got the UnChristian republican hypocrites elected in the past. Why doesn't CNN deal with that? Does CNN believe in the truth instead of distorted headlines? Does CNN or the republicans for that matter ever consider that a democracy is founded on and sustained by truth? Does experience count for anything after Bush who does not know how to think? The last election was fed by fear that was based on lies and by a party that is supposed to be "Christian," lies that feed bigotry, and lies that are reminiscent of the brown shirts of the Nazis who used lies that nearly destroyed the Jews. If the republicans consider themselves Christian just because they are anti abortion, what about the other sins that they don't take a stand against...like corporate greed, corporate welfare, bigotry, failure to integrate their own churches, White affirmative action, to name a few. But I guess being against one sin, anti abortion, makes the republicans "holier than thou" and permits them to try to win another election based on lies, fears, narrow-mindedness and bigotry. You would think that McCain had the depth to consider the seriousness of the lies within the book "Obam Nation" and how injurious it is to our democracy? But McCain is a non thinker just like Bush and so what does his experience count for it he can't think? And if free choice were repealed or changed by the Supreme Court as McCain would want, then I guess we would have to go back to the good old days when the predominant group that got abortions were the republican White females. CNN just goes along...no real honest reporting, just distorting.

ConcernedIndependentVoter   August 20th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Shouldn't this be an ominous sign for McCain? I mean Obama is STILL in the lead after the Conservative Christian roundtable. I was almost positive that McCain would be ahead in the polls this week. That definitely wasn't Obama's best moment this campaign season. However, as a result, I am now leaning more towards Obama. Let's just see what November brings.

Obama is just a demagogue. He will say, do anything to get elected, a la Clinton.

He looked well when competing against Hillary, but anyone would look better next to the ruthless lady.

He should not be elected. His promises, "priorities" are too many to meet.

His wife is no better. Michelle Obama is an angry woman, full of resentments.

Whenever I think of Barack Obama my mind unconsciously forwards to the story plot in "Remember the Titans"; the public expects him to be near perfect in all areas, and each time he fails to hit a home run his opinion ratings fall.

We are still in summer, frankly the only people who bother to keep up with polls and elections during this period are political junkies like I. It would be wise to wait until both conventions before we ferment our opinion, there are still 3 months left in the genereal election...

wilma   August 20th, 2008 8:41 am ET

The Reuters poll released this morning, shows McCain up by 5 points. McCain's lead is across all demographics, including the young vote. Guess the MSM just aren't getting the job done. My bet is on the american peoples sound judgement & finding the truth themselves.

It looks like Americans are finally waking up!

We don't want someone who is going to raise taxes, implement tariffs and price controls, increase subsidies, renogotiate trade agreements and plunge the economy into a depression.

We don't want someone who is going to continue to grow the US Government to even more unsustainable levels.

We don't want someone who is going to retreat from Iraq, give the terrorists a victory, and allow the middle east to blow up and fall back 100 years.

We don't want someone who is going to idley sit back and allow countries like Russia, North Korea, and Venezuela continue to make the world a less safe and secure place and threaten democracy globally.

And we don't want someone who has questionable moral and ethical values, who says whatever the audience wants to hear, never answers a question, is two faced, and surrounds himself with racists (Trinity, Wright) and crooks (Rezko).

Americans are waking up! John McCain 08!

Linda from Prescott AZ   August 20th, 2008 8:41 am ET

He was on vacation and McCain had the air waves to himself to talk trash. Now that Obama is back, the polls will change again. AFter the conventions we all know things will change.....dramatically.
So, let's not have a panic attack.

Mike Maggio   August 20th, 2008 8:41 am ET

MCcain sounds good when he get's the Question's ahead of time,
it's time for OBama to get MCcain in a debate, of his own choosing,
not MCbush's.

Kevin   August 20th, 2008 8:40 am ET

This is just like when McCain lauched his other ads blaming Obama for gas prices and comparing him to a celebrity.

in another couple weeks the polls will turn back around and Obama will be back to a higher percent lead.

People need to stop listening to the media and do actual research on these 2 candiates to see the real points of view they carry. All the smear ads or ads in general are all BS and should not even be payed attention to.

Look up these guys actual record and see who they like look at their political points of view and see what they agree with, not listen to some guy reading a TelepromTer.

to ' slimeball' BO.

Phyllis/ PA   August 20th, 2008 8:39 am ET

Now pundits are having a great time giving his or her reason for Obama dropping in the polls. However, the main reason is that since the primaries the media no longer hadsHillary to bash. Consequently, pundits have had to fill air time with somethi and therefore have been forced to talk more about Obama as a candidate rather than as a super star.
The more voters know about Obama the more voters are convinced that he simply is not qualified to be president. Now voters are finding out how one goes from a community organizer to being nominated for president of the United States.

Ann T   August 20th, 2008 8:39 am ET

Well CNN. I'd like you to discuss why it is that John McCain can't seem to get ahead? He's been down consistently and doesn't seem to make much inroad. Supposedly, he's the expereinced Maverick. Why oh why isn't he doing much better in the polls? Your bias is showing yet again.
Oh, and what about Mccain's extra-marital affair while married to Cindy????? IF that were Obama, you'd be on it 24/7.

Christopher F.   August 20th, 2008 8:38 am ET

Here we go. The election isn't for months, and already this hyped up back-and-forth account. Lets face it . Nothing to get excited about at this point. The polls mean next to nothing right now.

robert ga   August 20th, 2008 8:38 am ET

Well, we had a lull in events with the olympics and other issues.
But lets not forget that we don't want to go to war with anyone (Russia over Georgia – just kidding ) and the economy is first on our agenda. Oil prices might have drop in recent days but this problem is going to come back even stronger next summer so please let not get carried away with (super)foreign policy credentials we will alway protect America, but we cannot afford to cede our dominance in technology and economic stability to asia or other. At that point , trust me , national security will be the least of our problems.

For a better America.

Meaningless Polls   August 20th, 2008 8:37 am ET

Oh well, a shame for the obama fans that the rest of america has seen through the empty suit that this obama man is. He is not going to be hailed as a glory boy, even if he does scrape through to win this election.

John McCain has been looking more and more sincere and presidential in recent weeks, guess this is showing in the polls

Polls shmolls!!! Nov 4th is the only poll that means anything.

Waste my time, CNN   August 20th, 2008 8:34 am ET

'Polls say McCain is right handed, when last week they said he was left handed...' This article is incredibly insipid. Polls are random surveys and for you to write this one as inflammatory as you did, is just plain stupid. Take a poll six blocks away and you'll get an entirely different answer with entirely different results.

Susan   August 20th, 2008 8:34 am ET

This has happened because the news agencies keep reporting that Hillary's supporters are going to be making a scene sometime shortly. Why is Hillary still insisting on being a cry baby and getting her way.

A. Little   August 20th, 2008 8:34 am ET

Were you just polling people in your office? For being a major news provider i am highly dissapointed with the level of statistical disclosure. Where, when, how many people were asked what method? Phone calls? We the people deserve better...step it up! P.S. and FIRE Nance Grace! Im tired of the sensationalism of the news. Just the facts please....

Kevin   August 20th, 2008 8:33 am ET

Polls mean very little at this point in the game–numbers have been fluctuating tremendously, and anything can happen in September/October (further decline of the economy, national security threat, etc.).

These polls indicate that the media has achieved its objective by making this race as tight as possible going into convention time.

THIS IS WHAT THEY WANTED....MORE SKY-HIGH RATINGS.

How else can you explain Obama getting 70+% negative coverage the first six weeks of the general election and McCain only getting 50+%?

It is sickening the way the media plays with the future of this great country simply for ratings sake!

I find it very discouraging that McCain, after having been in a war himself, and having been tortured for so long, can now sit back and advocate continuing violent conflict on others. Self-reflection is non-existent in our government. War is evil, war ends lives, and war causes mental problems and depression, how can this presidential hopefull advocate the same hardship he went through on others? Further denigrating his image was his decision to turn "bombing Iran" into a mock Beach Boys song. War is not a joke, especially for someone who was tortured for so long – I bet he wasn't laughing then! This senator disgusts me, and has joined the league of hypocrites that have been running our country into the ground for 8 years.

carlo   August 20th, 2008 8:28 am ET

I'm not concerned. The polls are being tightened by changing the internals. It's to keep this a "horse race". November will be an Obama slaughter. They did the same thing with Clinton in 1992.

Nick   August 20th, 2008 8:19 am ET

Negative fear mongering is what McCain is doing. Americans are not re-awakening to national security fears because of Georgia. Most Americans didn't even know there was a country named Georgia. They are afraid of the black guy-because that is what us white folks were taught as kids-fear the black guy.

Media analysts has shown that news stories are slanted much more towards McCain-lets see some non-biased press reporting on Obama and McCain. Doing stories about McCain being a POW as "NEWS" is not accurate. He has not been a POW for a long time now. For every POW mention by the media, there should be a picture of Barack doing organizing in Chicago.

Rus   August 20th, 2008 8:18 am ET

Your headlines for these polls always amaze me – I doubt there's a significant difference between the mean of means that gave Obama a 3% compared to 8% lead. So headlines like 'lead cut in half' or 'bad news for Obama' are likely based on nothing. What does stand out though is that more polls have consistently shown Obama leading than McCain since the contest began. Quick calculation suggests that's highly significant (exact test).

Nate   August 20th, 2008 8:18 am ET

All of this Hilary stuff has put a damper on things. I believe that this has all made Obama look weak. I am an Obama supporter who will not watch the "catharsis" called the convention. I think the convention will divide democrats even. How disrepectful of everyone to pick which historical moment is more important. The first female loser vs. The first african american. I think that well see another woman succeed before we see another black person. Just like America to belittle the efforts and successes of blacks. Just like white women have historically in this country to ride the coattails of blacks again, Civil Right Movement to gain respect. Shame On You Hillary, America.

Scott L   August 20th, 2008 8:17 am ET

Obama is going to get crushed in November. He should be skyrocketing in the polls now...but typically it is historically shown that non-incumbent elections are usually neck and neck. This time though, Obama won't have Hillary supporters and he'll be dealing with a lot of people who won't tolerate his ties to shady characters.

Still not too late to select Hillary! :-D

Walter   August 20th, 2008 8:15 am ET

Finally, for Obama, reality sinks in. Polls show the reality. His economic and spending policies would be a disaster for US economy. His judgement is flawed across the board and his inspiration works on college kids who have no idea about the money matters. No one ever one with college kid's votes, one needs adults who make abuck for living- that is where Obama has NOT won the hearts.

John in Ohio   August 20th, 2008 8:14 am ET

This is BS
The early week polls consistently (in July anyway, August has actually been a *better* month for Obama) show about a 2-3 point Obama lead
The late week polls consistently show about a 5-6 point Obama lead

This is a consistent pattern. It's lazy sensationalist psuedo-journalism to take the late-week polls, and compare them to the early week polls, and say "Oh look! The lead was cut in half! Oh noes! Bad news!"

You never see frantic breathless ticker articles after the late-week polls saying "Obama doubles his lead over McCain!" now do you?

Something else to note that CNN does't talk about is that Obama's number have stayed stable throughout all this.
8/19: Obama 46% – McCain 43%
8/13: Obama 47% – McCain 41%
8/8: Obama 46% – McCain 41%
8/6: Obama 46% – McCain 41%
If you go back further, the numbers stay the same. There is maybe 1-2% fluctuations to McCain from the undecideds, but Obama's numbers stay stable.

So if you look at it critically (something the people who are going to scream "ZOMG EVERYBODY FINLLY SEEIN THRU OBAMBI" aren't capable of), you see clearly that this is not bad news, or good news, or even news at all.

Mark VA   August 20th, 2008 8:14 am ET

America may finally be waking up. Obama's only chance is Clinton on the ticket. But will he admit it??? Not too sure because he is a proud man. He cannot even admit that the surge worked, because then he would have to admit he was wrong and cannot say "I rather be right on day one?" Hubris and smugness is not an attractice feature.

Ben   August 20th, 2008 8:11 am ET

As usual CNN is putting a spin on it. I have stopped watching CNN to avoid being dished out one sided coverage of the election. This article is about Obama's lead being cut down to the margin of error, and what is the closing paragraph of this article? "But the recent downturn in the polls for Obama may not last — the Democratic White House hopeful is headed for a week of what is likely to be overwhelmingly postive coverage as he names his running mate and officially accepts his party's presidential nomination."

CNN should either have an opinion piece or a news report, not spin the report by being a vocal supporter of Obama. People are not stupid, they can see through it.

Jaded in CT   August 20th, 2008 8:11 am ET

I think Obama should have waited 4 years so that we have some record to look at, he was an unknown and now the way his people are looking to take advantage of a mistake in OH, it just shows that they will do anything, cheat, lie, whatever to win. It's what they said about Clinton and here they've done the same thing over & over.

In a year that democrats should be taking a landslide Obama has show to America he is not a president we can depend on.When the Democratic Convention is over and they pick Obama as their nominee they will have doomed the thought of being in the White House in 2009. Our country is in a very serious situation from economy, war, homeland security, gas prices lack of jobs, Obama clearly doesn't have a clue as to hoe to help any of the problems America are facing. As the primary season goes on you will see the polls drop more each day for Obama. He has bad connections, and is arrogant, racist sexist, egomaniac, phony, unqualified, unexperienced, and worst of all he shows hate to the blue collar workers the babck bone of our country HE HATES AMERICA AND AMERICANS

What else would you expect, with all of the constant negative news coverage of Obama. It's like everytime you turn on the news there is someone saying something negative and if you add the fact that the DNC is still catering to the Clintons, what else could he do?Look at the title of this ticker. It's always something negative. Fix News dedicates it's entire broadcast days to bringing down Obama. Rush and Lou Dobbs absolutely hate Obama and they use their shows to destroy him on every turn. And you wonder why the polls show him slipping. I tip my hat to him for simply just holding his peace and not telling the media where to stick their polls!!

ricardo williams   August 20th, 2008 8:09 am ET

Obama will prove the Polls wrong. America will know that their Greatest Fear will be their Greatest Victory. I remember when I was a child I was afraid of a gentleman who lost half his face in the Vietnam war. He could of hide with his wounds, but instead he went on to become a great leader and helped many wounded American soldiers and gave them the care they deserved, The Republicans want us to fear Obama. but he will prove America wrong, Obama will change the our path for the past 8 years that is not working and we will see the light of a new day in America. Americans know the definition of insanity "Doing the same thing over and over and getting the same result."

Polls go up and down. What matters is how people feel on election day. The major issues confronting the US are not unknown, even the newly arising issue about Russia and Georgia.

Certainly our military has played "war games" regarding a major power suddenly invading a weaker neighbor. Up until 2009, the problem is George Bush's to handle, neither McCain's or Obama's.

A C-Span Junkie   August 20th, 2008 8:08 am ET

Is this the same democratic convention where one of his chief rivals and critics is going to have her name on the "ballot" as well so that the world can (again) see just how many people didn't want Obama to be the nominee? THAT should be a positive moment. The man is simply not ready to lead, particularly in the days ahead of us and the Georgia/Russia conflict bore that out again as he first delayed making a statement, then made a weak one, then changed it to what John McCain had said a week earlier.
Mr. Obama may very well be a great leader someday – Lord knows he has the charisma. But right now he is (understandably) showing his inexperience time and time again. Experience will bring real confidence (not youthful arrogance in an attempt to hide a lack of knowledge) and true convictions based on knowledge only time and practice can bring. Stick with politics, Mr. Obama, but step aside for another term or two and let a truly experienced candidate lead the way we all know she can.

Suzanne   August 20th, 2008 8:07 am ET

I think too much is being placed on the McCain effort and not enough on Sen Obama and his own short comings. Yes, Sen McCain's campaign is having an affect, but the more we get to see and know Sen Obama, the less we like what we see and hear. He continues to back track on his positions prior to being annoited as the "presumptive nominee". The latest, paying volunteers in Philadelphia, when he had stated he would never pay volunteers who worked for his campaign.

Last Saturday during the Evangelical Debate Sen Obama looked very uncomfortable, out of place and his answers seemed like they came from some internal hard drive.....he just did not sound natural. Then, after a poor showing came the "...McCain cheated" charge. McCain on the other hand looked and sounded relaxed, his answers seemed natural and not carefully contrived.

And then there is Sen Obama's weak position on drilling for oil.....one he really SHOULD change. We all want the alternative sources of energy. But dear Senator, they are years away and you know it. We need to start today with a plan which includes drilling, nuclear, conservation, change in life styles and alternative fuels. These must be taken together to solve our energy problem.

The fact that Sen Obama has changed his mind on other issues, and not this one, is very hard to understand.

I believe that the more we get to see and hear the Senator, the more we get to know him, the less attractive he becomes as our choice for President of the free world. As well, I am not sure I could listen to him for 4 years!

JohnC   August 20th, 2008 8:02 am ET

It's too bad Obama is blatantly non-committal towards the nuclear power issue. Yucca Mountain is the current repository under construction for nuclear waste that year after year gets underfunded so construction can't move forward at the pace it needs to. Obama's answer to greenhouse gas emissions is emission credits. In my opinion that's the wrong answer. Emission credits aren't new so Obama's solution is the same old same old. Low sulphur coal isn't news either. We need more nuclear power plants and lots of them otherwise fossil fired power plants will continue to pollute the air just like they've been doing for the last 30 years. There's nothing new in Obama's energy plan and there should be.
I like John McCain's position on nuclear power and for that reason I'll probably vote for McCain this November.
If Obama is saying we need changes in this country he needs to look to nuclear power to effect changes in the way we generate power. They are safe, quiet, and don't polutte the air or the water. There's no thermal impact either. Fossil power violates all of the above.

ya know something. Barack Obama says he will notify his supporters via text message before anyone else knows. However, I'm sure CNN has people who will receive that text message too, as will all the other media people, so really, it would be much better for him to just introduce the guy at a rally. Does anyone else agree? The texting thing is a dumb idea. Maybe if he publicly sent the text message during a rally, right before he said who it would be, that would be better.......It will be weird that it will be sent through a text but that the media will pick up on it before Obama speaks.

It always amazes me, that politicians appealing to our worst instincts – fear, anger and worry – can increase their poll standings and even get elected! Why it it that Americans allow themselves to be manipulated into these negative emotions forcing them to settle on someone who offers such little hope, joy in or comfort to really solve the problems we face? Please take note of the candidate that has the intelligence, the judgement, the potential to lead this America in becoming the nation it has been blessed to be. We have NOT been blessed to just make ourselves more safe, comfortable and secure! We've been blessed to be a blessing to others!

NOVEMBER   August 20th, 2008 7:56 am ET

The only numbers you need to poll are the votes in November. With all of Obama's spending, traveling abroad, constant talking (or speeches as you like to put it), he's going nowhere fast. The more he talks, the less we like of him and the more we can see through him.

The Democratic Party made a huge mistake and just as they have done the last 3 elections they will fail again.

The problem: They and everyone keeps trying to dismiss Bill and Hillary Clinton, which have proven fatal for the candidates.

Notice that John McCain publicly disagrees with G.W. Bush but can stand along side of his and accept his support.

Obama trashed and attacked the Clintons and used reversed racism and now he wants and needs the help. Dumb move.

One thing has remained consistent, Obama has been up. I expect a 3 increase with the selection of Biden as his VP, or 5 points with Clinton. With all respect to Gov. Sebilius and Kaine, they won't add points to the poll; however Kaine would guarantee Virginia. Biden is the right person for the job, IF Obama comes through with his promise to expand the role of the vice president. Otherwise, please let Biden become Secretary of State. If Biden is your choice for VP, then Bill Richardson would be a shoe in for Secretary of State and possibly John Kerry.

Don   August 20th, 2008 7:54 am ET

Obama will ultimately prevail because of the hardtimes the country is facing, but those who think it will be a landslide victory are mistaken. John McCain is a better candidate than he is being portrayed, and no he is not Bush.

Walt, Belton,TX   August 20th, 2008 7:54 am ET

Perhaps people are just getting tired of Nobama using the word change all the time instead of actually presenting workable solutions to problems. Bull Sh _ t tends to stick to thorny issues coated with ignorance.

Doug   August 20th, 2008 7:53 am ET

I don't think this has anything to do with foreign policy. Ask the average American about the "crisis" in Georgia and they'll say "oh yeah....the russians need to get out. What's going on at the Olympics?" Fundamentally, no one cares beyond some humanitarian empathy.

What is more troubling is that Obama will not be able to run a reasonable and thoughtful campaign as he had originally hoped. The voters (at least those reponding to these polls you cite) are fundamentally stupid. They're expressing more support for a candidate who is as shallow as they come. He's the most beatable Republican in a generation (except perhaps Bob Dole) and the Democrats are on they're way to blowing it. So Obama will have to start the usual "nyahh nyahh" campaign that Americans love.

I don't care. I know how I'm going to vote. If the electorate were smart (which they're not), they'd really think about what is best for the United States and its people: fixing the economy, our own little unprovoked aggression in Iraq, etc. Don't vote for one guy because his dad can beat up the other guy's dad. Simplistic Imperialism and One-party rule doesn't work. Let's move on.

From the outside, looking in...   August 20th, 2008 7:53 am ET

The best decision is always the hardest decision to make.....
Think about it.. it would be much easier to elect McCain over Obama, right...That would be the easy and safest way out for most of us, Come on America, make a tough decision and vote Obama in November, i will..

LET IT GO   August 20th, 2008 7:52 am ET

I hate to say it, but Barack just might need Hillary to win. I know it undercuts his message of change but I don't think he has a choice.

Samantha   August 20th, 2008 7:52 am ET

Oh boy...it's already August and his lead is cut in half, oh what will he do?! CNN and please grow up and stop trying to influence the voters! This is sooooooo annoying! We don't vote until NOVEMBER for goodness sake!!!

I'm getting deployed in a couple of weeks and I'm looking to a break from the DUMB NEWS! You are really impacting this world in ALL the negative ways! And to think...this is what your Ivy Leagers went to school for...sad...and I beat your student loans are paid with the hefty CNN salary!

Jerry   August 20th, 2008 7:52 am ET

In Arizona we call John McCain "The Fish" because he flops so much on the issues. He also voted 89% of the time with George Bush. Do you want someone like this as the president? If you do., you deserve what you get!

joe   August 20th, 2008 7:51 am ET

Hillary 2012

Shawn Newton   August 20th, 2008 7:51 am ET

I don't believe your polls CNN. I think you guys are doing just like every news and media did back when George Bush supposedly "won" the election. The media just wants a republican to win, so they just announce a winner ahead of the elections. I always hear about the so called Liberal media. It is just the opposite, it is the Conservative controlled media that is running our country into the ground.

Ilene   August 20th, 2008 7:51 am ET

I take offense at your constant "Obama's in trouble" headlines over and over again. You're "leading the witnesses" into believing something that's not "that real." Why not say that McCain has made no progress. His numbers are the same.

...and after your own Jack Cafferty's commentary yesterday, anyone voting for McCain is just plain off their rocker...guys you work for the same outfit. Get together! That commentary was one of the most awesome pieces I have ever read. I forwarded it on to many friends to see.

...and just who is doing these polls? If you're just doing landlines, man, you're missing the boat for all the young people supporting Obama - they don't have landlines - they have cell phones.

Desmond Sequeira   August 20th, 2008 7:50 am ET

The USA will do itself and the world huge harm if it does not elect OBAMA.

Lorna, NY   August 20th, 2008 7:49 am ET

Polls means nothing...people are on vacation now. The polls that will be important is the one on Nov 4th.

Scott, West Chester, OH   August 20th, 2008 7:48 am ET

The Saddleback appearances had to give a boost to McCain, especially among evangelical voters. He did an outstanding job while Obama looked tentative and weak.

Vet in S.A.   August 20th, 2008 7:47 am ET

Maybe people are finally looking into what Barack is really about. McCain is not much better, but better.

My View   August 20th, 2008 7:46 am ET

All of these numbers are within the margin of error for the polls. The numbers are NOT changing. Why doesn;t CNN get someone who knows a little bit about statistics to actually report on this and not some fool who is only interested in "big news" headlines.

Hawkeye   August 20th, 2008 7:44 am ET

News worthy??? Would there be any political news if they told the truth. Obama by a landside, just is not interesting. Keep it up drive by media and Lush Dumbaugh. Maybe you all were appointed by God/

Matt   August 20th, 2008 7:44 am ET

Steve   August 20th, 2008 7:42 am ET

CNN, I know you really want to post a story and a lot of people will click this link and discuss it, but have you learned nothing of how flawed polling can be from when they were so wrong during the NH primary. But I guess all you want is content. Now you can speculate on the reasons for these numbers and what it means. Figure out what you want to go with as the new "story" of the campaign.

Bruce   August 20th, 2008 7:41 am ET

Who would want to be exposed to this constant attack on everything they do or say? Out right lies are put forth as gospel, and time and money is wasted trying to defend against the untruths. Both parties are to blame, but the more I study the attack adds it is clear to see that one is more to blame than the other.

The vast majority of the posting on the blogs here are just HATE mail. No back up just empty accusations. Repeating the same lies over and over does not make them any truer. They only prove that the person repeating them does not care about truth they are so caught up in their own private world of “IT HAS TO BE MY WAY”. It is clear that most of them have adopted the concept of don’t confuse me with the FACTS I have my MIND MADE UP.

The ridicules ranting and raving, the name calling and total disregard for each other and those that are running for public office that I read here only shows that the founding fathers of this GREAT NATION knew all too well that the general population was not to be trusted to make wise and proper decisions. That is why the USA is not a democracy. They chose to form a Republic to prevent the type of bickering that is going on today from disturbing the ship of state.

Ticket Killer   August 20th, 2008 7:41 am ET

Of course they are cut in half.
Obama is a celebrity.
Obama is an empty suit.
Obama has an interest in seeing improvement in the Black community
Obama isn't old enough to have fought in the Vietnam War
Obama wants to tax people appropriately so the government doesn't go broke paying its interest bill to China which uses the money to build the stongest army on Earth.
Obama is so wrong for us.

For Change   August 20th, 2008 7:40 am ET

Obama...You got this election in the bag. Just stay positive and keep preaching your message for change. McWar is happy with the current direction that America is going....foreclosures, record gas prices, weak economy, the pathetic "No Child Left Behind Act", War in Iraq....

chas alabama   August 20th, 2008 7:40 am ET

I was going to vote for Obama, but he is going to far to the right, so I might as well go with McCain like everyone else, and continue down the path of destruction this country is on.
More war, new draft, higher taxes to pay for it all.
And this time the draft will include females.

staustin   August 20th, 2008 7:39 am ET

See we told you so, this is exactly the reason we should all vote for Hillary. She has the most experience as well the ability to get the job done. Vote for Hillary!

Ray   August 20th, 2008 7:38 am ET

While I will continue to support Obama, part of me welcomes a McCain win. If this country is actually stupid enough to consume another four years of the the sickening snake oil we have purchased for the last eight, then so be it.

Thomas   August 20th, 2008 7:37 am ET

In my opinion, one thing that is for certain is that this race will be a very close one. No landslides for anyone this year.

Mark G   August 20th, 2008 7:35 am ET

"But the recent downturn in the polls for Obama may not last — the Democratic White House hopeful is headed for a week of what is likely to be overwhelmingly postive coverage as he names his running mate and officially accepts his party's presidential nomination."

Liberal MSM, trying to keep hope alive for BHO comeback. Saddleback threw BHO off the saddle, MSM trying to put him back on the horse.

Robert   August 20th, 2008 7:32 am ET

McCain's negative attacks have fooled a lot of people...but he is still ahead, as he should be. And once the Democratic Convention is over and Barack has his VP by his side...LOOK OUT John McCain. No matter who McCain picks for VP, with only negative campaigning in his arsenal, John McCain will lose by a LANDSLIDE in November. We the people will never knowingly choose an Adulterer and lair to be our President.

Dianne   August 20th, 2008 7:31 am ET

Really? What a big surprise. Remember when everyone thought Hillary was being mean? This is exactly what we (Hillary supporters) were afraid would happen. Once somebody really started pointing out BHO's shortcomings, he would be unelectable. I am heartsick that people fell for him and now we will have four more years of this Republican nightmare.

Bette   August 20th, 2008 7:31 am ET

Looking on the outside (from Canada), it appears that with repeated Republican attacks by McCain which the US voter apparently likes instead of analyzing for what they are, they are going to vote in another inept president. They have the opportunity of voting a brilliant politician, an incredibly intelligent individual of high moral character and what could be one of their greatest presidents ever. If they choose the other, then we can only watch the US eventually slide into oblivion like so many great powers before it. What a pity.

scooter   August 20th, 2008 7:30 am ET

How anyone could think of putting McCain in the White House after 8 years of the Bush administration is beyond me. Wake up people – Bush will leave this country in economic and financial ruin in 09...McCain has nothing new to offer, except that he can (I think) give a speech and make it seem like he understands how the English language works.

Without Clinton on the ticket, it will be hard for Obama going ahead to win. His recent lack of response on the Georgia crisis plus the effective attacks from the McCain camp will wear him down in the upcoming election.

These kinds of articles are a waste of time. The national polls are wrought with far more error than the state polls. Why doesn't CNN report on something substantial instead of this nonsense.

CARL PA   August 20th, 2008 7:23 am ET

Finally change we can believe in.

yvonne   August 20th, 2008 7:22 am ET

CNN what other negatives would you like to report on Senator Obama? Do you realize how blatant you portray your dislike for Mr. Obama? Talk about news that is suppose to be presented to the people unswayed but isn't.

ART   August 20th, 2008 7:20 am ET

These Pollsters just dont get it and obviously CNN doesn't either. The majority of OBAMA supporters, and to a lesser extent McCain's use cell phones. This large population is not polled. How can such surveys even be near accurate when the average land-line populace falls within the 50+ age demographic. To present these polls, as being even near accurate is absurd. The only accurate polling method today, is the old fashion door to door survey.
Comeon you pundits–GET A GRIP!

Bic from CT   August 20th, 2008 7:20 am ET

The only way Obama can stand a chance to win is if he makes Hillary Clinton his VP. If he does not do that then McCain will beat him in November. Maybe Obama does not want Hillary but I see no other way he can win. I think if they voted over again for Obama or Hillary that Hillary would beat Obama at this point. If the dirt came out on Obama when it should of back when he was running againest Hillary we would not even be talking about Obama. Hillary would be running againest McCain.

MThomp   August 20th, 2008 7:19 am ET

I often wonder about these "polls" and who are "they" polling? The press is very adept at misleading the public. Who in their right mind would vote for that bumbling old fool?

Miss C   August 20th, 2008 7:18 am ET

It's early CNN- find other news to report PLEASE!

RayRay,NC   August 20th, 2008 7:16 am ET

I guess fear politics is winning over some voters over again. If McCain wins we get what the majority ask for unfortunately it will take the rest of us down in to another 4-8 years of a Bush policy. This country will go under eventually with that type of leadership.

DW, NY FOR OBAMA '08   August 20th, 2008 7:15 am ET

If the US wants a war hawk for a President then that's on them. But, it'll definitely be hell to pay when we have a World War III on our hands and all our young people are drafted into a war McSame is very committed to.

I want a President that think before he acts and uses as much diplomacy as possible before entering into a war we'll definitely regret. This country has taken alot of beating over the last 8 years and couldn't take another. Obama is sincere and I trust him to guide this country along the right path. We need a leadership that's strong but not hawkish and McSame is VERY hawkish. McSame only knows WAR. That's his whole life.

No McSame or this country is really doomed!

Obama is the leadership the USA needs!!!! Go Barack Go!!!!

jim   August 20th, 2008 7:15 am ET

He can't think on his feet without the teleprompter. He doesn't want to give opinions when he hasn't seen the polls, and certain questions are "above his paygrade" when simple questions are asked on the issues.
That and he has no idea what to do about Georgia and Russia except to continue surfing in Hawaii, while Mccain addresses the issue. That made Obama look really bad.

So now that we are finally seeing the man behind the slogans and flashy signs.. this is what he really is.

odessa   August 20th, 2008 7:14 am ET

CNN, and all cable news stations and local.

I want to know who you all are polling. I have never received a call nor have I been asked who I am voting for in this election.

Another point, you all take too many polls in a short span of days and weeks. Stop taking polls and start listening to the candidates. I am looking forward to the day, when all this is over.

Take more polls questioning the media's cover of the primaries and general election. I will not be surprise the media will receive very, very, very, high negatives.

Keith   August 20th, 2008 7:12 am ET

So when Obama has won the election in November will the press be saying, "but he should have won by more!"

He has just had millions dropped on him in negative advertising and been on vacation. He is back on the campaign trail, calling McCain out on those personal attacks, and is headed to the convention where he will speak before 80,000 people.

In otherwords, I would rather be in Obama's position than McCain's at this point.

Of course John gets to take weekends off.

Dem   August 20th, 2008 7:12 am ET

It's not surprising. His inexperience is showing more now that we are learning and hearing more from him. Watching him the other night without a teleprompter to guide him was just awful.
McCain nor Obama are a good choice for Presidency, but if I have to vote between them and it looks like I will have to... I'm voting for McCain.
Obama just doesn't have enough experince to get USA out of its problems nor to face the world wide problems looming.
Unfortunately the best candidate is no longer in the running.

sharon of canada   August 20th, 2008 7:12 am ET

remember the presidential forum with pastor rick warren? well, jessica yellin of CNN said that obama was too thoughtful! imagine, she was complaining that a politician is too thoughtful. what has become of USA!? seems to me that thoughtfulness and intelligence are liabilities and weaknesses. is that why bush was re-elected? you deserve what you voted for ,and methinks you've got to be an idiot to vote for mccain and the republicans in november. i guess senator obama is too smart and too good for USA.

Richard   August 20th, 2008 7:11 am ET

Your forogt to mention that Obama has really been ahead by 3-4 points for the last month EXCEPT for the previous poll. It is simply a polling adjustment that has little to do with McFlipFlops advertisements. SHOW us the numbers state by state and tell us if any of the states have changed dramatically instead of wasting your time trying to invent a contest.

enough with the uh's   August 20th, 2008 7:11 am ET

Obama doesn't stand a chance without Hillary on the ticket.

I don't understand why the – uh – Obama elitists can't see that the – uh – honeymoon is over. Americans are – uh – no longer – uh – swooning over his – uh – empty words. Obama simply doesn't have the – uh – experience to successfully run the US.

Seriously, Obama, enough with the "uh's" – the last thing the US needs is another inarticulate president.

Debi   August 20th, 2008 7:11 am ET

Its only August and the only poll that will matter is in November. Georgia is the exact reason I will not vote for McCain, he was practically drooling!

Char for Obama 08 & 12   August 20th, 2008 7:11 am ET

McCain is NONE to Happy about the Georgia~Russian issue.
He just want WAR WAR WAR WAR. McCain needs to slip of the stage

Fred Hermans, Neshanic Station NJ   August 20th, 2008 7:10 am ET

This is another indication of how weak Obama is. He lost control of the convention by giving into hillary, had to back off on the "Rev" and reversed course on off-shore drilling. It may be too early to tell but obama has an uphill battle for the election or a downhill ride back to Chicago.

Politically Speaking   August 20th, 2008 7:10 am ET

LOL. CNN, please stop this. Your Poll of Polls always carries a +/- 3% margin of error, which you conveniently didn't mention in this particular story. Meaning 6% last week could have really been 3% or maybe even 9%.

You look like rookie journalists when every week you change from doom and gloom for Obama to momentum and dominance in his favor.

Mark   August 20th, 2008 7:10 am ET

This is not statistically significant, and it is not surprising if McCain benefited slightly while Obama took a very sensible break. The dynamic will change with the conventions and VP picks, and the polss about 10 September will be the really important ones ...

Judgment over Experience   August 20th, 2008 7:09 am ET

The real question is – Why hasn't mccain who is very well know, been around forever and the so called more 'experienced' of the two, hasn't lead once against the new guy???? The fact that Obama has maintained a consistent lead over mccain is very interesting. Obama has my vote and millions of others and will win in novemeber despite the repugs vicious attacks and hillary and her supporters dementia.

chris   August 20th, 2008 7:08 am ET

oh god. i hate polls. they really mean nothing. who do you know that answers the phone (a land line at that) to chat with some underpaid pollster?? Losers and old people. Thats who.

Patriot   August 20th, 2008 7:06 am ET

Again with the Polls?
They do not survey or poll people via cell phone, which is the majority of his base. Please keep polling and in November when it's a land slide everyone will say Wow what happened. It's called technology and the pollsters haven't caught up to it yet

Regain the sanity   August 20th, 2008 7:05 am ET

People are finally seeing what's been evident all along... The O-man, Barack Hussein Obama, is an eloquently tailored empty suit.
No resume, no accomplishments, no experience, no original ideas, no understanding of how the economy works, no understanding of how the world works, nothing but abstract empty rhetoric devoid of
real substance.
His candidacy is ridiculous and should not be taken seriously by any
thinking American.
While McCain may not be the one of choice if given additional options, he beats hands down and light years over what Obama has to offer in any area other than that of destroying our nation. Obama is a very dangerous man and people are finally seeing that, thank God.

Minnesota   August 20th, 2008 7:04 am ET

Obama Looks good, Sounds Good...........Too often, I've been burned too often by those who look good, sound good and know everything. I'll go with the guy who has been burned a few times.

Tom in New Hope, MN   August 20th, 2008 7:04 am ET

Eighty percent of Americans say our country is on the wrong track. That means Republicans are part of the 80% and yet the polls show it to be a race too close to call. There is very little change between John McCain's and George Bush's policies, which means we will continue down the same track we are on now – the wrong track. You can't vote for McCain and hope to get this country repaired from the dire shape we are in. The Republican themselves say they have lost their way and their principles. Our economy needs to be fixed and John MCain says he doesn't know much about the economy. John McCain is willing to get your son or daughter killed in a war without end. Status quo is okay with John McCain for our country when eighty percent say we are on the wrong track. It sounds like the maverick is not listening to the electorate just as the Bush administration has done for the past 8 years.

Vote wisely!

randy   August 20th, 2008 7:03 am ET

Most armericans dont like it when somebody bad mouths the country non stop, really dont like it when he is studdering the whole time and is running for president. The marxist thing is kind of a no no also. Where is Hilliary when you need her, race would already be over. Thanks Pelosi and Reed

Marie   August 20th, 2008 7:03 am ET

If one can trust any of these polls, his lead is cut in half because of McCain's negative ads. Really, is that the real reason? I would think it would be that the ads are one thing, the the fact that the MSM's promotion of McCain is far superior than any negative ad could possibly be. Mccain can make falsehood after falsehood and either gets excused or ignored by MSM. He doesn't get questioned on any point of substance. It's as though because he is 'McCain' a 'So Called War Hero' how dare anyone even try and challenege him. Afterall, if you do, your not respecting the so called 'Hero' and your being unpatriotic. Reminds me of the same MSM characters behavior during the drumbeat of the Iraq war. It seems the McCain camp writes the talking points it wants to stress at any given time and hands it to MSM to promote and deliver. It's a cheaper way to deliver the news in corporate America and it protects both corporate interests.

It was just a matter of time. Hopefully it will continue until election day. Go McCain........................

Davonne from Atlanta   August 20th, 2008 6:58 am ET

I don't pat attention to these silly polls....november is where all of this really matters, and expect all of the closet racists to come out and vote for McCain....i've seen the interviews conducted by cnn and it really is a shame how some people just really cannot handle havin' a black person as prez.

This was mostly from the older senior citizen and the over 40 white crowd....alot of those ignorant folks were born in the 30's and 40's so hopefully that racist crowd will be dyin' off soon.....and i've noticed that the younger folks are waaay more tolerable of race relations than the older crowd....i understamd that racism will always exist, but it's a shame that we have some ignorant fools that may also be deciding who the next prez will be.

Not surprising at all   August 20th, 2008 6:53 am ET

Three points, six points, eight points...What's the difference?

The truth is the Democrats were handed a gift after 8 years of Republican rule. They spurned it by rallying around an inexperienced and polarizing figure who shows himself to be undeniably racist and elitist.

The Democrats were fools for not choosing Senator Clinton who is experienced and bipartisan and a hugely strong advocate for those in need in this country. She has the ideas to turn this country around and the chutzpah to do it.

Better luck next time!

Intelligent Voter   August 20th, 2008 6:52 am ET

These polls go back and forth all the time. They've been as low as tied before, however, consistantly the've shown that Obama is ahead. The headline is worded that way for dramatic eye catching effect.

I think in actuality, the voters that will come out for Obama will be much more, as polls typically tell you who's going to vote among "likely" voters. Many of the voters that Obama's campaign has inspired and signed up to vote are in the "unlikely voters" category.

McCain has a group voting for him that wouldn't change their vote even if he outright litterally promised them that he would do a terrible job. They're just voting on party lines and couldn't care less about actually learning about current events or where the two men stand on issues.

Bob (NC)   August 20th, 2008 6:46 am ET

Polls don't really count because it's not a % of Americans that elect you (otherwise Sen. Clinton would be the nominee).

However, Obama's character does count and that's been going downhill for a while now that people are getting to know him better. That is what this poll shows.

Just depends which states the most reluctant Obama voters are in as to who will get to the 270 needed for victory.

Should be an interesting election in November...

Larry   August 20th, 2008 6:45 am ET

Punchless. The lies, innuendo and deceit of the Right is starting to impact him. If he isn't willing to fight it will continue to trend this way.

clarity   August 20th, 2008 6:44 am ET

McCain's gain with negative campaign tactics has peaked. He will not receive any additional mileage. Obama is still in the lead and will slowly pull away from the pack going into the DNC convention and sustaining a healthy margin until elecion day.

Ken   August 20th, 2008 6:43 am ET

Not surprising given the negativity coming from the McCain camp. As much as people claim they dislike negative ads, they sure respond to it.

Just listen to the two candidates and its easy to tell who is having a dialogue with the voters and who is just attacking the other side while only offering cheap sound bites that mask as policy.

Drill here, drill now is not an energy policy, its a bumper sticker, Saying we'll stay in Iraq until we win is not a war strategy. Questioning your opponents patriotism is not a debate.

McCain talks to Americans like a father does to a 5 year old, Obama talks to them as if they were mature adults,

Wow... could it possibly have something to do with the fact that people are starting to realize that he is all hype and no substance.

After watching him on Saturday with Rick Warren, I am convinced he would be VERY bad for our country. He can't speak without mumbling or using 'ummmm' at least once per sentence.

"McCain's attack ads"... please... I think that CNN and the rest of the media should be ashamed of themselves. Call it like it is... McCain beat the pants off of Obama fair and square and you guys are doing everything to hide that fact.

No surprise. Americans, in general, are not very bright. They vote against they're own self-interest for ridiculous reasons, like believing Obama is a muslim or to keep the gays from marrying. Such a shame – America has truly become an Idiocracy.

Of course he's going to lose some ground...people are beginning to notice what an "empty suit" he is. I think Hillary said it best "He's got a speach he made at the convention"...or something like that. It's almost like the shock and awe campaign in Iraq...you see it...you expect spectacular...but it was nothing. In the last month Obama has shown you what it's like to have no stand on anything...it's easy to flip flop when you "are what people make you". It's a shame that half of you are going to vote for him...you are so uninformed.

REPULICAN FOR OBAMA   August 20th, 2008 6:35 am ET

are these polls been taken from landline phones? if so then i'm not surprise at the resultS but, if it was taken otherwise then i wonder why. the republicans have given this country a bad reputation. why will anyone in thier right mind would want to elect another republican. especially JOHN MCBUSH all he wants to do is sent more kids to war. anyone who votes for MCBUSH will have innocent people blood on their hand.

All the more reason to pick Hillary as his VP, with her at his side, they would have a landslide victory.

Obama/Clinton 08
