Obama spoke highly of vice presidential contender Tim Kaine on Wednesday.
Obama spoke highly of vice presidential contender Tim Kaine on Wednesday.

(CNN) – After giving a shout out to perceived vice presidential shortlister Sen. Joe Biden on Tuesday, Obama praised another leading contender, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, while campaigning Wednesday in the southern part of the state.

With former Virginia governor – and U.S. Senate candidate – Mark Warner at his side, Obama applauded the two governors for the worked they’ve done to make cars more fuel-efficient.

“We’ve got to partner with our governors to come up with these plans the way that Mark Warner did such a wonderful job when he was governor and the way that Tim Kaine is currently doing such a great job as governor of Virginia.”

Kaine and Biden are believed to be the frontrunners for Obama’s number 2 spot along with Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh. Further fueling speculation that Kaine could get the nod, the campaign announced that he will host a town hall with Obama Thursday in a Richmond suburb.

Obama was in Martinsville, Virginia Tuesday to discuss the economy and in addition to slamming former McCain economic advisor Sen. Phil Gramm’s infamous “mental recession” comments, Obama continued to tie the Arizona senator to President Bush.

“Let’s face it, he has a compelling biography, he is a POW, and so that’s what people kind of think about instead of focusing on the fact that he wants to continue the same economic policies that George Bush has been doing for the last 8 years,” said Obama. “So my job in this election is to say I honor his service but I don’t honor his policies and I don’t honor his politics.”

MRS CLINTON IS THE KEY FOR MR OBAMA TO WIN THE NOVEMBER ELECTION,SHE DESERVE A THOUSAND TIMES THE VP

BKoi   August 20th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Senator Obama , Senator McCain has enjoyed years and years of gratitude from the American people ! He demands it, and constantly talks about it. Enough already, why is he more deserving than the thousands of soldiers that never made it home, are suffering terribly as we speak! What about the families that suffer everyday in ways we can't imagine ? He is responsible for a horrific war that should never have been! Who the hell is this guy who says YOU have 'nt the judgement to be Commander in chief? He does not have an original idea ! Read Jack Cafferty's column, about McCain, it's right on the money ! Beware this man !

ron   August 20th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

OBAMA in desperate need of VP. going down in polls.needs someone to prop him up. McCain going up in polls, justs needs someone who won't drag him down. where is that smugness now? the great obama reduced to scrambling for a running mate that will help him win the election. can't do it on his own. you can fool some of the people ect.

JF   August 20th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Obama neds to step down NOW and let a REAL leader take charge. The job of running the most powerful country in the world should not be handed over to a kid who has to ask his wife and his mother what he should do.
The game of lets pretend to be president is OVER!!
Our country needs a REAL LEADER and Obama is NOT qualified to lead this country.

Rob indetroit   August 20th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

IT's time , it's time, it is time, for SEN. OBama to break the baseballbat,
and go to work on John MCcrazy's knees, he must pick HRC, as running mate, so she can lay the smack down on the republicans.

Chris from NY   August 20th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

EXPERIENCE DOESN’T GUARANTEE GOOD JUDGMENT. OTHERWISE PEOPLE WOULD NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE OVER AND OVER AGAIN. McCain has consistently shown poor judgment both in the senate and this campaign trail. HE IS TRIGGER HAPPY. Always ready to go to war. May be he is at war with himself. The reason why the media has not called him on his rants is what I can’t seem to fathom.

MRS HILLARY CLINTON IS A KEY FOR MR OBAMA

Nimi from NY   August 20th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even tempered.

A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his opinion.

He who answers before listening –that is his folly and his shame

Brian   August 20th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Kaine has less experience than Obama, which is little. I don't get it!

Sylvia   August 20th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Obama, will you stop saying "I honor his service, but". You are kissing his butt and at the same time attacking him. PLEASE, do not contradict yourself and attack him for who he really is. It's bugging the hell of me that you have to praise him first.

anonymous   August 20th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

What are we voting for? Sound like the biggest bunch of garbage. Regardless of who wins, they are going to have their hands full. It doesn't matter which party wins. This country wants strong leadership. You can't make everyone happy. A lot of this unnecessary garbage trickled down from the CLINTON years. Read your history. What a headache. We sure do not want that repeated.
Sounds like the White House is competing in the Olympics.

Ted:Canada   August 20th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

CNN it is unfortunate that a Canadian has to tell you who the VP will be – but here goes...it will be Hillary.

Send me a thank you message after it is confirmed!!

Obama and Hillary will destroy the Repubs in this election.

McCain is still fighting his personal war in Vietnam. See if you can help him get some psychological help. It will be alright once he finally comes to learn that the war is over!

anonymous   August 20th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Seems like Obama is trying to keep the public confused as to his choice as VP. Trying to keep people guessing. Well, just think if he gets in the White House what it is going to be like. He is not going to know which end is up and what the left and right hand are doing. Everyone else will be running the show. He might has well throw in the towel.. Good loser.

anonymous   August 20th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

American for Peace   August 20th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Dan, TX   August 20th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

I agree with McCain. Lower taxes for corporations and people making over $500,000 every year and pay for it by raising taxes on people making less than $100,000 a year. It is brilliant!

Obama thinks that by giving all the tax breaks to people making less than $100,000 a year that they'll spend it all paying off their debts and buying things from their local businesses. What nonsense! Only rich people can save our economy. The little people should be on their knees thanking us rich people that we give them jobs.

Dan, IL   August 20th, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Michael Phelps could be Obama's VP and it wouldn't matter. Although it would double Obama's foreign policy experience with Phelp's time spent in China for the Olympics.

Lucieann   August 20th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Great! Obama! Now stop praising John McCain!! He is not your friend! McCain is getting nothing but "praise" in the media, in the frm of "Puff-pieces" like CNN is doing.......Show your contrast Barack.....Show McCain for the mythological creature he truly is!! He is no "hero", except maybe in his own mind!! And he had a "call to serve", purely on ambition!!!

Jeffrey Eckman   August 20th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

If he doesn't pick Hillary he is a bad decision maker and loses my vote. I will give him the benefit of the doubt until he makes a stupid decision. Not putting her on the ticker is a stupid decision. He is running for president of the US not prom king.

Writing in Hillary on November Ballot – hey you morin, why hasn't mccain released his VP choice yet??!!! He has been campaigning singularly a lot longer than Obama. God, what ignorant folks you are. You can't even think of why you hate Obama, you just know that you do. Note that Obama, in the CNN poll of polls, is at 46% right now compared to McCain's 43%. He's been at 46% consistently for the last couple of months. This is even factoring in all the PUMA types who insist they will never vote for him. So consider, even with so-called Democrats saying they'll never vote for him, Obama still has 46% and even will all the so-called Democrats saying they're going to vote for McCain, McCain is still behind Obama.

There's a lesson there.

An old song once said...

Nothing from nothing leaves nothing, ya gotta hve something, if you wanna be with me....

Obama has nothing. He has nothing new. It's all the same old tired Democratic shell game of tax the rich and give to the poor. The top 50% of the wage earners now pay 97.2% of the taxes.

Let's tax the oil companies and give money to the poor. If you make above a certain income, even though you're an earner, you don't deserve a refund check.

Sooner or later, the camel's back will break.

High gas prices, high food prices, people loosing jobs. Why didn't Bush experience stop this from happening?

Linda K.   August 20th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

A little history lesson.

It's popular to slam Jimmy Carter, but he was more honorable than many who have served in the White House. His main downfall was the hostage situation in Iran. How many of you know that Reagan/Bush were making secret arrangements to have the hostages held until the inauguration? They met in Paris with Iranian officials to accomplish this.

Jimmy Carter is one of the most successful ex-presidents we've ever had. You don't have to agree with his politics to admire his work with Habitat for Humanity, for instance, and his efforts to bring peace to different areas of the world.

I hope CNN prints this.

I respect Sen. Obama so much for his decency and dignity. We Americans have been brainwashed by Rove/Bush/Limbaugh/Hannity and others and don't realize how wonderful it is for a politician to speak to the issues instead of demonizing his opponent. McCain has serious ethical, mental and leadership flaws too; I'll let Obama's VP and surrogates bring those out,

Obama says correctly McCain's economic and foreign policies are completely wrong and out-of-touch for the 21st Century. Let's hope Americans are not "Bush-wacked" and made cyncical by McCain's negative message, but realize the real differences between the candidates.

Question:
Uncle Sam August 20th, 2008 3:28 pm ET
Why does it always seem to be Obama supporters who bring up race?

Answer:
Raymond Duke August 20th, 2008 3:14 pm ET
You better hope like H@ll he does because Virginia usually goes Republican. I would not bet the farm on Obama winning the state with a first term Governor. Of course he will probably lose West Virginia after call them uneducated Cracker racist after Hillary won the state. Of course he did that to a lot of states that voted for Hillary instead of him. I did not vote for him either in the primarys so I guess that now I must be an uneducated racist.. So I guess I will vote for the old white man that does not call me names.

Sorry, Uncle Sam, you have to bear the cross for morons like Raymond Duke (and that is the kind of person you are voting with).

For the record: Obama only made the unfortunate and incorrect "bitter" comment. If I remember, it was Dick Cheney who made the comment about West Virginia (the state where 22% of the voters ADMITTED that the voted based on race).

They weren't mocking Kerry's service to the country with those bandages....they were mocking the fact that he had to beg for his purple hearts when he shot a couple bullets off a rock and the shrapnel apparently knicked him.

They were mocking the fact that he had to go over his direct commander to be awarded his three purple hearts so he could go home.

You know....sort of the opposite of John Mccaine

Barack Obama's one gift has been to be better than most at projecting a carefully crafted image of greatness to cover up his many flaws and his lack of a record of accomplishments.

Unfortunately, now that the novelty has worn off, he is proving himself to be an otherwise mediocre candidate.

Why didn't the failed leaders of the undemocratic Democratic Party see this coming?

Most of their constituents did.

Hey, Obama, who have you been talking to here in Virginia? Kaine has NOT been doing a good job as Governor. I agree that Warner did a fairly good job (except for the HUGE tax increase), but Kaine has done nothing except ride Warner's coattails. Please pick him as your VP so that we can get rid of him. Thanks!

Tim Kaine is not liked in most of Virginia. Tried to raise taxes just like Mark Warner did.
Obama may want to rethink this man as VP.
Native Virginian not liking Timmy Boy.

If you added Obama and Kaine's experience together, they still don't have enough for either pres. or VP. it's going to be the blind leading the blind. And I'm still laughing over Caroline Kennedy. Has she even held a job?

It's sad to watch all the hysterical Obammunists delude themselves into believing they're riding some big wave of change in America, and the MSM's naked advocacy of Obama has only fed that delusion. It doesn't matter how loud your little echo chamber of friends is – the fact is, America is still as divided as ever (see presidential polls), and will remain so in spite of all your candidate's pretty rhetoric and false promises.

2000: Gore 48.4%, Bush 47.9%
2004: Bush 50.7%, Kerry 48.3%
2008: McCain: 49.6%, Obama 48.2%

Invest your money in Kleenex and Prozac, because the Obama supporters will be buying those by the case in November

I want to know more about McCain and his relationship to Randy Scheunemann and Randy Scheunemann's extensive lobbying on behalf of Georgia. Randy Scheunemann is McCain's Foreign Affairs Advisor. There's a LOT more to this than meets the eye and CNN and others are avoiding it. Why?

CNN gets all hot and bothered about Obama's VP choice, but skips this story entirely? Why?

PJ, New York Independent   August 20th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Obama will never be president. If he chooses Hillary Clinton as a running mate, he's got a better chance but even then... he's still not fit/qualified for the job.

John McCain will be the next president, get used to it.

CNN, you've kept up this VP speculation dance a bit too long. Just let us know when the decision is announced, ok?

Barack Obama's one gift has been to be better than most at projecting a carefully crafted image of greatness to cover up his many flaws and his lack of a record of accomplishments Unfortunately, now that the novelty has worn off, he is proving himself to be an otherwise mediocre candidate.

Why couldn't the failed leaders of the undemocratic Democratic Party have seen this coming?

My only comment to people who keep saying that Obama needs to put Hillary Clinton on the ticket is if she is so wonderful and will bring out the votes why didn't she win the primary?

Look she has way too much baggage and Obama would be too busy watching his back to get anything done. In fact with Hillary and Bill in the White House if I were Obama I would hire a food tester.

Greg PA   August 20th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

If you are a fan of the ticker then you must have seen the comments about the new draft. I have heard people saying that since the 2000 elections. People didn't go for it then and will not go for it now. Let me put it this way, if republicans are the war loving syco redneck killers that they are so offten made out to be then the democrats are little wimpy baby killers that would rather live on their knees than die on their feet, as so many republicans see them. The truth is that neither one fitts this discription and any claim to the contrary is fear mongering and nothing more.

updated 7:31 a.m. CT, Wed., Aug. 20, 2008
WASHINGTON – In a sharp turnaround, Republican John McCain has opened a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the U.S. presidential race and is seen as a stronger manager of the economy, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters by 46 percent to 41 percent, wiping out Obama's solid 7-point advantage in July and taking his first lead in the monthly Reuters/Zogby poll.
-----

That's an 11 point drop, folks. Hillary was arrogant and thought she couldn't lose. Obama put his own name on a presidential seal mock-up, took a rock star tour, and now people are seeing his arrogance.

It's going to be his downfall.

Writing in Hillary on November Ballot   August 20th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

OK, why is Obama waiting till the last minute?

Because he doesn't want us to vet his candidate...at least only a limited amount between now and the convention.

I absolutely won't vote for him anyway, but who he choses for his VP is very important, because that person has a statistical chance of becoming the next president.

All Americans should refuse to be divided anymore.

We need to elect Barack and remove the homophobia within the African American community and include them in the fold.

We need Obama no matter how uneasy change is.The road is painful.
But we are ready for change!

In a collective history we ready to create America as it should be.

America always become better when people decide it is our time.

Obama can not do it alone and that is why I am not gonna rest with my powerful voice to tell people the truth and hope and possibility to drawn out the skeptics and the synics.

Joseph   August 20th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

A thin resume can be nearly 30 years old and a thick one perhaps just a few. I have done a lot of research on McCain and do not find a man of great accomplishments–just a lot of time clocked in the halls of congress. With Obama there is a cadence that seeks to identify problems and work for solutions either in Illinois or Washington. I think this is what change means - it is not about how much time but the quality of the time. Obama addresses issues. McCain addresses personality in a pontificated fashion. He really has nothing to offer and the American people know it.

I watched CNN last night and Bill Maher who thinks that Obama should pick Hillary as his running mate. The rumors of his top 3 are 3 boring white guys. He needs Hillary Clinton because he needs to show bold stand and the ruthlessness of the Clinton's on attacking the key issues. Obama has moved to center and changed his stand on Oil drilling etc. Hillary would bring back the movement for the Democrats. Funny we don't hear about health care anymore.
Obama has lost his movement and that is evident with the fact he is not winning by a very large percentage after having 4 years of BUSH!!
I agree with Bill Maher.
GO HILLARY!!! I will write her name in…

Throughout the primaries and now in the general election I have never heard Senator Obama go negative with personal attacks against his opponents. He has always taken the high road despite the hits he has received on a daily basis and as a result has continued to rise above the divisiveness. The media with exception of a very few outlets have been biased against Obama and basically have him under a microscope yet McCain continues to get a positive free ride in the press. I like many other voters have my own suspicions as to why this continues to go on but still believe that despite these negative tactics Senator Obama will be known as the candidate who played fair despite how unfairly he was treated. This alone speaks volumes about his character.

A Woman In California For Obama   August 20th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Right on! Well said. McCain's politics are as sleazy as the man himself.

Folks you have a choice: if you like this war and want more-then vote McCain. If you want this war to end vote Obama.

If sleazy divorces and adultry mean nothing to you – vote McCain; if it bothers you-vote Obama.

If you want the rich to dictate your life-vote McCain
If not-vote Obama; and lastly,

If you feel the economy will be better under McCain-vote for him. If not, vote Obama.

Afterall, you have ONLY one vote. Use it wisely.
