(CNN) - Well over two months have passed since Hillary Clinton formally abandoned her White House bid, but newly-released Federal Election Commission reports show the New York senator has made little headway in paying off her sizeable campaign debt.
According to an FEC report filed Wednesday, Clinton's debt as of the end of July stood at just under $24 million - a decrease of only $1.2 million since the end of June. More than $13 million of that total is owed to the New York senator herself, while close to $11 million is owed to individual vendors. Clinton has suggested she is not seeking to pay back the money she owes herself.
The report also shows Clinton was only able to raise $2 million in the month of July - down from close to $3 million in June. By comparison, Barack Obama raised over $50 million for his White House bid in the same time period.
The report comes as some high-profile Clinton backers have expressed disappointment Obama has not made more of an effort to help his onetime rival retire her campaign debt.
“He has provided her with a pittance compared to what the Clintons have given Obama,” prominent Clinton backer Lynn Forrester told the Times of London. “Her debt could have been cleared within 10 days. It’s ungracious.”
Obama and Clinton have appeared at a handful of joint fundraising events, and the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has publicly urged his supporters to donate to his former primary season rival - though at a joint appearance with Clinton at a July fundraiser, the Illinois senator forgot to call on his backers to contribute to her. (He later went back on stage to correct himself.)
According to Clinton's disclosure forms filed Thursday, she owes the most ($5.2 million) to her former top advisor Mark Penn's polling/political consulting firm, Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates.
Boohoo hoo hoo. Clinton needs to just shut up.
Election donation rules prevent Clinton supporters from making more contributions to her campaign but her supporters can donate to Obama, so she is helping Obama and he is not returning the favour.
They wonder why Clinton and her supporters are not lining up behind this guy.
SOME JUDGEMENT HILLARY USED. AMERICA COULD NOT AFFORD TO HAVE HER AS PRESIDENT!
She needs to pay it herself. You did not see Romney whining. He just accepted it.
Good grief! She was willing to gamble and she lost.
Give her time, she and Bill can afford to pa up.
Sorry I wasn't able tp comment before you closed on the article about Harry saying he can't stand McCain. Liberals do tend to have a problem with war heroes.
aright all of you HRC backers and you so called puma where is your money now As a side note she should sued Mark Penn for thief of service for not knowing how the del are given out.
ALSO, IS THIS THE EXPERIENCE THAT SHE WAS READY TO USE ON THE 3 A.M. CALL! ! !
Why do Hillary's supporters feel it's Obama's responsibility to help pay off her debts? We're talking about debts that were created in an effort to continue negative ads towards Barack? I'm at a loss of words...
I'd donate to her if she was actively campaigning for Obama like she had promised...
Hilary will be just fine, as she sells plenty of books. Maybe if she had bowed out of the race at the right time she would not be so far in debt.
Obama 08!! No More McSame!!
Its TOO BAD THAT HER 'PUMA' SUPPORTERS DO NOT HELP THE LADY OUT!
PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS!
So much for her all talk 18 million cracks. And you expect Obama supporters to be afraid of your threatened support for McCain when you don't support your candidate. Mark Penn isn't worth 5 cents his firm should write that off. She should pay the small business first. Come on PUMA people she has until the convention
where's all her so-called supporters?
She should have dropped out of the race much sooner. Being too prideful can be a very expensive lesson to learn.
In other words, she couldn't run her campaign business well, how do we expect her to run the country's business?? She should have stopped in March. A prime example of Bushonomics ...SPENDING MONEY THAT SHE DOESN'T HAVE!!!
IF SHE WERE TO GET INTO THE WHITEHOUSE THIS WAY, WHO WOULD BE LEFT TO PAY OFF THE DEBT ...THE TAX PAYERS!
OBAMA '08 –
SOMEONE WITH FISCAL AWARENESS AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
WOW ! ON A DAY LIKE THIS..DEMS COULDN ASK FOR MORE...CHAOS!....I'M NOT BUYING THIS-LET STICK TO PU (Party Unity)
PU all the way
well, you can't force people to donate to her campaign. You can't blame Obama. He can tell his supporters to donate, but people make their own decisions. Considering how she treated him badly and her supporters/backers continue to do so as well as 49% of the people don't want to see her as president ever, I can see why she is still in debt. You can't expect to treat people badly and then ask for their help.
"It's ungracious" they say....the arrogance of Clintonites is amazing. He has to be gracious to you people??? For what? Name one thing which Hilli-Billy have done for Obama campaign...I mean name one 'positive' thing they have done.
Are you kidding me? People have the nerve to put this on Obama for not raising money for Hilary?
She has "18 million" supporters, and where are they?! They threaten to not vote for Obama, and to protest etc.
Yet less than TWO MILLION dollars was given to HRC in July? haha!! Hilary's supporters are ALL TALK, if they actually WALKED the WALK, they would help their "Hero" Hilary.
Yet they think she should be running the US of A. Riiiiight.
How pathetically stupid can Lynn Forrester be? The idea here is to WIN this election, not help Hillary Clinton retire her debt. As many people have stated many, many times, if all Hillary's PUMA's gave her just 2 dollars, she'd be flush in cash. Instead of paying to help her, I guess it's more important to complain, whine, moan, cry and threaten . It doesn't cost anything to do that (except, of course, possibly an election, but why should that matter to the PUMA's, who have made it clear it's person above party.)
Now that we know what advice Penn was providing to the campaign, I think he should take his $5 million bill and stick where the sun don't shine.
I've got to believe that most people think her debt is not their problem...I pay my bills...she should pay hers...it's just wrong to expect someone else to pay YOUR bills....
If all the Clintonistas, such as Mark Penn and Susan Estrich, would stop slamming Obama, then maybe more of the Obama supporters would feel better about donating to Clinton to retire her debt.
This is why Hillary and Bill need to leave the democratic party. Obama is all about his ego and himself and doesn't give a rip about fellow democrats.
Down with Obama! Down with Obama! Down with Obama!
I wouldn't spit on him if he were on fire!
The Clinton egos cost the Obama campaign millions more than they would have needed to had she dropped out earlier. I was thinking of donating to pay off her debt but she has continued to stoke the fires of negativity (in between her appearances for Obama) among her supporters so I definitely will send that money to the Obama campaign instead.
