McCain is out with a new ad.

(CNN) - On the heels of an aggressive effort by the Obama campaign to exploit John McCain's recent inability to recall how many houses he owns, the Arizona senator's campaign is launching a new television ad slamming Obama over his dealings with disgraced Chcago businessman Tony Rezko.

"Barack Obama knows a lot about housing problems," the 30-second ad's announcer states. "'One of his 'biggest fundraisers' helped him buy his million-dollar mansion. Purchasing part of the property he couldn't afford."

"From Obama, Rezko got 'political favors' including '14 million from taxpayers,'" the narrator also says. "Now, he's a convicted felon, facing jail."

The McCain campaign said the ad will air in "key states." Earlier Thursday, Obama's campaign released a housing ad of their own referencing his inability in a Politico interview to name the number of properties he and his wife own.

Hitting back a little too late isn't he. McCain wants to be elected to this country's top office-a feat that will require an expansive amount of knowledge and memory recall that will aid him in making tough decisions. Hello-he ain't got a clue how many houses he owns? Does anybody else but me see anything wrong with this picture. The media is spinning it--he's rich and out of touch with the common man and so is Obama--for me, him not knowing how many houses he owns since it isn't such a huge number shows me he is just simply OUT OF TOUCH. We don't need Alzheimer John McCain in the Whitehouse.

People make no sense   August 21st, 2008 11:44 pm ET

McPimp has a sweetheart real estate deal. He beat his wife up and broke her arm and now he has 7 homes or more than he can remember. McPimp for President.

Ship it Obama. Now all of America will know your two faces. What a fraudulent coward.

People make no sense   August 21st, 2008 11:42 pm ET

McWar spent his military years being beaten, tortured and spilling his guts about America. They pampered him compared to the other soldiers because of who his father was. He has no credibility on war. What is he going to teach everybody how to get captured? What a loser he is? Look Semper fi when they beat you turn to the side like this and it hurts less. That's his idea of winning a war. What a loser! And so many dumb people worship this guy. Usually when you are good at something you excel in that area. How is being a prisoner excelling? If that is the case our prisons have a lot of experts. I'd elect one of them before electing McBush II.

chuck   August 21st, 2008 11:39 pm ET

Obama first lied that he and Rezko had never talked about the house. He most recent story is that they saw the house together but he didn't know Rezko was going to buy the side yard. The story that the media has swallowed is that the owner wanted to sell the house and the fenced in side yard at the same time but making two seperate lots out of them. The fact is that isn't the way real estate is done and Rezko is the first owner ever of the lot. Meaning Obama had to know Rezko was buying the lot while he was buying the house. Rezko never does anything with the fenced in, accessable only to Obama lot for several years (while he is going bankrupt ) and then ultimately sells part of the lot to Obama, making the rest of the lot less valuable at a time he desperately needs money.

Cecil   August 21st, 2008 11:39 pm ET

It Was A Very Simple Question, How Many Houses You Own!
And Bam!

"BUT the question must be asked, what did Obama's campaign do that would require a doffing off of the gloves"

The Rezco story is old news. McWar is rich, old, out-of-touch and trigger-happy.

Cindy   August 21st, 2008 11:25 pm ET

McCain has no honor. He cares more about winning an election than doing it with honesty. I'm not questioning his patriotism, but I am questioning his judgement. Shame on you, John McCain.

Matt   August 21st, 2008 11:24 pm ET

Mccain offers the nation a real path to energy independence that will create a new energy boom in this country will millions of jobs. All this while we secure our economy and military against a choke hold of middle eastern oil.

Obama prefers to count houses, play celebrity and push changes....as in changes of positions to align with the latest opinion poll results.

The choice is clear. If you want to gamble, vote Obama. If you want security, vote Mccain.

Margaret   August 21st, 2008 11:23 pm ET

Hopefully the truth about McCain will come out. CNN talks a lot about Obama and Chicago politics, maybe you should do some research about McCain and Arizona politics.

I thought McCain wasn't going to run a dirty campaign? Well shows how much you can trust him.

Cecil   August 21st, 2008 11:22 pm ET

McRichie Rich;

The Obama campaign issued a response to the ad from spokesman Tommy Vietor saying that a key player in The American Issues Project, Ed Failor Jr., is a paid McCain consultant.

"The fact that John McCain dispatched his paid consultant to launch this despicable ad from a so-called ‘independent’ committee shows how desperate he is to change the subject from his shocking disconnect with the economic struggles of the American people," said Vietor. "He knows that Barack Obama has denounced the detestable crimes that Bill Ayers committed forty years ago."

The Obama release points to an article from National Journal last year noting that Failor "signed on with 2008 White House hopeful John McCain this January," and links to an old McCain press release trumpeting the hire.

MILA:

You know NOTHING about the facts. This ad has already be PROVEN and VETTED to be a complete lie. Obama WAS able to afford that home, and he bought it at market price. He bought a small plot… 10 foot strip.. to expand his back yard a little bit.. which he ALSO bought at market price.

So before you go off spouting ignorance… learn the facts. It's people like you and McCain that make this country so disgusting to live in.

Actually Gene, the lots were being sold together. It was both or nothing. The Obamas could NOT afford the full asking price for both the house and the vacant lot. Lo and behold along comes Tony Rezko. Willing to buy the vacant lot. He then sells 1/6 of it to the Obamas. Can we see the bill of sale for the ten feet? Rendering HIS (Rezko's) lot useless. Who wants vacant property that nothing can be built on due to the size? Without Rezkos help Obama could not afford the house. Look it up.

So before you go off spouting ignorance… learn the facts. It's people like you and Obama that make this country so disgusting to live in.

OBAMA in 2008!!!

Guess Who?????   August 21st, 2008 11:16 pm ET

It doesn't matter once the voters made up their mind they won’t see the different. Why don’t we all just sit back and wait until after November to see who will win? None of the two will let any of us move in to the White House with them so let them fight each other for their spot. Just a suggestion to save your time and energy to go to work so you can support your family. I know I will good night I need some rest to go to work tomorrow so I can by some expensive gas and some foods for my family.

Too bad Obama was cleared of any connection to Rezko's illegal activities, including the Chicago Tribune, who aren't Obama-friendly saying he did nothing wrong.

try again senator McCan'trememberwhomanyhousesheowns

1 The Tribune is in the tank for Obama. I bet you have never picked up a copy of the Trib in your entire life. Google Chicago Tribune endorses Barack Obama for president.

2 How exactly was Obama cleared of anything in the Rezko trial? It was the people vs Tony Rezko. Obama was mentioned but not on trial. Without being on trial you can not be "cleared" of anything. Or did they just start handing out judgements on everyone involved? If they can tie Obama or Gov Blago to this in any way. They will. One trial at a time. This was the first of MAYBE many trials.

If you want to support Obama, it's cool. However don't just start making stuff up. If you have no clue what you are talking about. Don't talk.

Mark   August 21st, 2008 10:51 pm ET

Again Obama makes a fool of himself!! What a fake he is, so what ??? what the big deal people ?? Mr. McCain can have as many homes and properties he wants! That's called a hard working man folks!! If that's his American dream then God Bless him!! Maybe all you good for nothing tug's will stop selling the drugs and get a job!!! McCain worked for his home people and Obama gave favor's and took money for a felon Mr. Rezko in jail. If you people let this slug Obama Trick you out of your vote that your problem, were all voting for McCain all the way. Thank-God for McCain and i hope someday i can work hard and own my home too.

Republicans Hate America   August 21st, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Obama will haunt your dreams McLoser. He hits you with the out of touch not only to Americans but to your own portfolio and all you can do is throw some six degrees of separation nonsense. I knew you were a tool as far back as the 90's.

Reality check #1   August 21st, 2008 10:45 pm ET

Obama should have had enough sense to keep his whinning, school boy attitude to himself. Owning a million + dollar home does not make you better able to relate to those that are facing foreclosure, even if it's only one home. What Obama is not saying is that his home deal was accessed with the aid of a convicted felon, one who took at least 14 million dollars of tax payers money that Obama helped him get through his Senate office. In other words, Obama wrote letters, etc. to screw the tax payers out of all this money and we are the ones who have to pay. it will be a cold day in h- before I will vote for obama.

Dan, Santo Domingo, DOM   August 21st, 2008 10:40 pm ET

Americans are realy sickening... This ad is based on a bold-faced lie and has been previously cleared already! Why do you get attention distracted with this kind of foolishness and don´t concentrate on the issues? Should you elect this inmoral old man, then you got and will have what you really deserve...

I would suggest you get your facts straight. Obama purchased his home with his own money and legally.

Oh geesh – how juvenile so many of these blogs are. The same people cheering and clapping for the Obama campaign for airing an ad about how many houses McCain has (which has nothing to do with any of the issues) are now complaining about McCain returning the favor. Boohoo....cry me a river.....Obama is dirtier than McCain and it is about time Obama's crooked past gets a little coverage.

It is a shame that McCain camp is using this as their message. Those of you who are so bitter to vote against Obama, if you like vote for McCain, you will have yourselves to blame for voting the last administration back to power. Senator Obama will still have a decent living with his wife and children. You all against Obama will be the losers for not voting for Obama.

Ken   August 21st, 2008 10:17 pm ET

You can bet your last dollar that there was something shady about the deal that Obama made on his house the property next to his.

I would not put anything past Obama and his shady past with Rezko and his pastor Wright.

The only way that he will get my vote is if he puts Hillary Clinton on the ticket as his VP, and better yet, the delegates should see that Obama cannot win against McCain and if they want to win back the White House, they ALL need to vote for Hillary Clinton and make her the nominee instead of Obama.

Whenever Senator Obama hits McCain hard, McCain's temper flares up. This is McCain's reaction to having a miserable week. He melts down, can't stand on his own record and has to make up lies about his opponent to ease his anger. McCain's life is riddled with things he'd rather forget about, like Keating 5, making propaganda films for the North Vietnamese, signing statements against the United States, which is an act of treason, and a myriad of other failures. McCain wears $500 Italian loafers, can't remember just how many houses he owns, doesn't understand the economy and calls Obama an elitist.

Fed up with the lies   August 21st, 2008 10:00 pm ET

JWC, the tire thing from Obama has been discussed to death; but since you are hearing and intelectually impaired; I'll explain it again. He answered a question about how to conserve fuel with a simple short explanation. Keep your tire pressure up to suggested standards. We've been hearing that since drivers ed back in the 60's (or maybe earlier). It wasn't his energy plan although McCain probably thought it was since he's still operating on 64K memory. At any rate; it was a good suggestion and every one should check their tire pressure. Now, find something legimate to complain about or stop writing.

Typical conservative GOP fare. When you have nothing new or original to offer and can only run on the failed policies of your predecessor, you attack your opponent in such a way as to cast doubt on his character or ability to lead. McCain is so out of touch with the ordinary American, he just doesn't see that we are fed up with personal attacks and negative Rove-style campaigning. I agree – is this all McCain can come up with – We the people have already read and heard about Rezko – and have already learned that it amounted to nothing.

Also McCain is very wealthy and cannot pay the property taxes on several of his homes. At least Obama pays his bills -(Student Loans have been paid in full. That speaks volumes for me.

All the ignoramus Obamabots are out in droves in these comments. Good thing they only make up a very small part of the actual electorate, we'd all be in big trouble. Mostly young, ignorant Obama supporters on these blogs and they're well known for blowing off their mouths but history has shown that when it's time to leave the party and actually vote they're too busy drinkin' beer and shooting off their mouths. All the rock the vote campaigns by MTV have produced zilch in actual young voter turnout. It's obvious all you have to do to get their support is to go out a holler 'Change" in an inspirational way and they'll follow you over the cliff like the lemmings they are. I'm a liberal independent and the more I read of their nasty slimeball comments the more I am sure to vote for comeone of substance ...John McCain

I hear Obama must get mad if he wants to win. How in the world can this man function in the White House if he has to get mad to win? This is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. We have other people working in the White House besides the President, I do no think they woul want to work around some that must get mad to be a winner. What a loser. I think Obama has more sense than that any way.

Deception, misdirection and propaganda that is the Republican way. They have nothing so they make up something. Senator Obama needs to kick hitting Senator McCain and keep hitting hard. In this game second place gets you nothing.

Jim in Orlando   August 21st, 2008 9:22 pm ET

LOL ... all you Democrats ... "McCain is McSenile" ... too old .... LOL ... what has gotten real old and tired in a hurry is Obama. Rezko .. Ayers .. Wright ... polls got you Dems panicking .. have to call McCain more names ....... LOL !

RJ, CA   August 21st, 2008 9:19 pm ET

YES! The Rezko connection is a major blight in Obama's record. Obama and Rezko go WAY BACK in Obama's political career. Rezko contributed to EVERY Obama IL campaign since DAY ONE! Obama manipulated Ilinois legislation to benefit Rezko's slum lord programs, all of which failed and cost Chicago MILLIONS of dollars. Then Rezko gave Michelle and Obama a favorable deal on their million-dollar home. There's no disputing that, no matter how hard you try. The record is very clear on that!

WE NEED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THAT, AND OBAMA BETTER 'FESS UP!!

Eric   August 21st, 2008 9:16 pm ET

this is a joke Obama gave back all the money and distanced himself from rezko. McCain has his own "Tony Rezko" Charles Keating

And That Company Donates To Obama's Campaigns .

Keating Five, McCain. McCain is worse than Obama ever was. McCain is a fraud.

Anonymous   August 21st, 2008 9:11 pm ET

This has been debunked nine ways to Sunday. The Republicans have nothing to offer on why McCain does not know how many houses he owns or why he want's to bring back the draft. this is always their strategy – throw out nonsense nad get the spotlight off of McLame. To bad the MSM falls for it every time.

obama helped Rezko buy many homes with taxpayers money . this was done to help house the people in his area while a community organiser. these buildings have been mostly condemned and those that are not are in such disrepair that they soon will be Rezko grabbed the upfront money and ran leaving others to worry about the fallout. that all happened and obama was well aware of it before obama went to him for help.

Rezco is dead...Obama was never found guilty of any wrong doing. Lets start dragging out all the scum McCain and the Clintons are tied too in some form or fashion. Why is it never mentioned that McCain was part of the Keating Five...does anyone remember thatt liitle bit of criminal activity. Go home old man...you have plenty of them to choose from!!!!

Hillary Supporter   August 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

I am glad that McCain hit him back where it hurts. Obama did an underhanded deal with a convicted felon. He should be ashamed of himself. I think there is more to find out about Obama that will really show us who he truly is as a person. He does things that if another politician (white) did, they would be called in for it. The media is letting him get away with dishonest things but I suppose they are afraid to make too much of it becuse he is black and they will be called racist. That's the easiest excuse to use seeing that it makes all you white folks back off because you don't want to be called racist. Let all all his dirty laundry come out. I wonder what else is there lurking to be revealed.

Everyone in Washington has their skeletons in the closet, so playing with fire for either candidate is likely to get collateral damage.

I don't see how Rezko or Keating Five or Abramoff or any other skeleton in the closet lowers my gas and food prices or solves any foreign policy issues.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 21st, 2008 8:58 pm ET

I'm more worried about Obama's shady deal for his one house than McCain's 4 houses. At least McCain didn't deal with a convicted felon for his purchases. Why is it you Dems keep bringing up the Keating 5, in which McCain was completed cleared but 3 Democrats were found guilty; yet you say Rezko is old news? The fact is Obama could not have bought his million dollar house without Rezco's help.

check out tony rezko on the net. check how far back he and obama go. cnn won't let a lot of things that are fact be printed so you have to do it yourself find out where tony rezko was born and raised and his connections in that country. obama supporters you have as much right to support obama as McCain' people have in supporting him but people should know the facts about their candidates whoever they are and CNN should not prevent facts that are and in many cases been aired on their and other networks.

shelly   August 21st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

McCain, like all Republicans, has to lie to win. Ask McCain about his role in the Keating investigation which earned him a Congressional censure. The straight talk express is stuck in the mud–McCain will do and say anything to get elected.

anonymous   August 21st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Frankly I do not care for either candidate. Hopefully the next time we get to elect it will be a hard choice because they will both be good. I am so concerned about the welfare of our country. It will take years to get back in shape. Ronald Reagan was the best President this country ever had. Where is Ross Perot ? Certainly wish that someone would listen to his suggestions as he is an intelligent man and could get this country back on the right track. Hope Ross Perot can help and SOON.

Jeanne Pelley   August 21st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Wow CNN, you have two nearly-identical posts on this "story" up.

Whatsamatter, you scared Obama's Abramoff charge is gonna stick to your boy McCain? You gotta get shrill and post as much lie-filled articles as you can find to try and save John?

WeBoDave   August 21st, 2008 8:48 pm ET

Why does Senator McCain's campaign always exagerate, lie and attack in its ads? Rezko most definitely did not receive $14 million from taxpayers, this money was for an apartment development for seniors which was built and is now open. Was it the most effective use of taxpayer dollars? I don't know, was the war in Iraq?

Gary from Madison, WI   August 21st, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Perhaps it is time for the Keating 5 stuff and the fact that the McCain's haven't paid taxes on their San Diego condo in four years.

The Obama camp probably won't run those kinds of ads as they are far too dignified and respectable. But I'm sure MoveOn will.

FL4Obama   August 21st, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Scott L, funny you might ask. There has been coverage of several tire companies and repair shops reporting a noticeable increase of customers inquiring about their tire pressure.

Actually, many people feel the Republican Party is lost (including me as a former Republican). Bush/Cheney/McCain shamed the party with their misguided diversions in Iraq.

TN for Obama   August 21st, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Hey, CNN....where is the blub you like to add in the last paragraph against Obama that goes something like this....

"However, this ad could be a problem for McCain because..........."

How about I help you out with it... "However, this ad could be a problem for McCain because no wrong doing has been found on Obama's part. AND McCain is really, really, really, really, really OLD so how could he remember how many houses he has OR how to run a country?"

E. Schiff   August 21st, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Why, oh why, did much of the national media – CNN, NBC/MSNBC, ABC, NY Times, Washington Post, LA Times, etc. – never thoroughly investigate in depth, or certainly never linger, on the political-financial entanglements of Resko and the Obamas? Any VP candidate the Obama campaign vets would probably be disqualified by this dubious business connection.

Obama calls for a time table of withdrawal...McCain criticizes...today Rice negotiates a timetable of with drawl...
the only one in the GOP following judgment is John Mccain...he followed the Oil Companies judgment to drill off shore.

Interesting –When the Repubs response to a negative ad by Obama –
They get so pissy–
Both are putting out questionable ads–
But learn one thing–
If you can't stand a little heat during an Election –how is he going to handle the PRESIDENCY–

One item that says it all-
When asked " When does life begin ?
Obamas answer " It's above my pay grade"
Let me tell you Mr. Obama–So is the Presidency-
No way he wins-
This will be a landslide for McCain–

WeBoDave   August 21st, 2008 8:27 pm ET

If we are going to bring up old news in ads then Senator Obama can do one that asks if Senator McCain has admitted a mistake since writing in 2002 that attending the two April 1987 meetings with Edwin Gray of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board and others senators, known as the Keating 5, was "the worst mistake of my life."

The negativity of McCain's campaign is a total flip-flop from his pledge for a positive campaign and deserves intense media scrutiny.

Question: What was the Keating 5 scandal cost TO TAXPAYERS for federal regulators following McCain's advice and not cracking down on Keating's failing Lincoln Savings and Loan?

Answer: $3.4 BILLION.

Try harder next time McCain – a LOT harder!

Voice of reason   August 21st, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Looks like Obambi took Carvelle's advice to start smearing. Too bad Obambi has much more to attack. The gloves are off, and Obambi shows he is just another politician. No, I take that back he is a lier (ie: campaign reform, his vote for denying medical attention for a botched abortion that resulted in a live birth in Illinois). We are glad to talk about character (ie: Rev Wright,William Ayers). But let's get back to the issues. Obambi would lay down in a foreign crisis, he can't have a sensible energy policy because of the left wing nuts, and is dead wrong on taxes and healthcare. This is a capitalist not socialist country.

K.Lee   August 21st, 2008 8:12 pm ET

Obama '08

tigerakabj   August 21st, 2008 8:11 pm ET

This issue is dead. They tried that crap back in the primaries. Obama already donated all of the money Rezko gave to charity once he found out his shady dealings.

Good try McCain on trying to get people off your "10 houses" gaffe.

You wanted the spotlight, you've got it (and everything that comes with it). What a sad, looney old man. Come Nov. 4 Barack will put McSenile in his rocker.

Obama/Sebelius 2008/2012.

Angela   August 21st, 2008 8:09 pm ET

"Obama couldn't afford"

So this ad proves that McCain is the filthy rich guy with so many houses that McCain does not know. This is Obama's only house and by McCain's words, Obama is just a regular guy who is paying his "struggling" to pay his bills.

By the way, this ad is more sleazy than Rezko.

McCain can now be called McSleazy!

Copperfield   August 21st, 2008 8:05 pm ET

Being 100% objective, its easy to understand why Obama's arguement is more effective than McCain's. Frankly, the Rezko issue is complex and it's been brought up before. On the other hand, McCain not knowing how many homes he owns is more relatable and simple. Americans facing foreclosure will find a republican forgetting how many homes he owns offensive, flat out.

Obama 1: McCain 0.

This election is about to get dirty :)

OBAMA and HILLARY share 95% of their views.

On your comment:

"God…how I wish the west coast could secede. The "heartland" and the south have held this country back for my entire lifetime. Europe…here I come."

I totally agree with you. This whole prudish holier than though, bible belt, everything in the closet "heartland" mentality is what's keeping this country back. They call themselves real Americans. I call them the plight that holds America back.

But please... don't break away from the East Coast states either.. Places like NY, NJ, Maryland, FL, VA... those places are all moving forward too :) .

Another thing;

Our country has lost respect, in part because of our President. BUT, also because we have become so rude and self-centered, just look at the names McCain and Obama have been called in these posts.
If we want respect as a people, we need to start where WE can do something. Our attitudes.

David   August 21st, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Does McCain really want to go here? Is he not worried that the Obama campaign bring up Keating 5. That's right KEATING 5. The one which cost the US taxpayers $3.4 billion dollars. The one which McCain was one of 5 Senators that got slapped in the hand.

Or G. Gordon Liddy, the domestic terrorist who threw McCain a fundraiser.

Barbara - NC   August 21st, 2008 8:04 pm ET

McCain's campaign begins the fear-mongering way earlier than Bush did.

Hmmmm – he must be more desparate than bushie

Andrew   August 21st, 2008 8:03 pm ET

KEATING FIVE

The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around $160.1 billion, about $124.6 billion of which was directly paid for by the U.S. taxpayer.

LOOK FOR THAT AD SOON

Christian   August 21st, 2008 8:03 pm ET

This is such a non issue. The facts are that he purchased the house at fair market value and later some land next door also at fair market value. The ad is misleading. Why is nothing being said about McCain's Keating 5 involvement?! Or the way McCain treated his first wife...that is enough deciet to make you never want to vote for this scumbag. If character (or lack of it) doesn't bother you, think about him bringing back the draft and your kids and grandkids being killed in an immoral war.

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 21st, 2008 8:03 pm ET

OKAY LET'S GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT!

THE OBAMA'S WANTED TO BUY THE HOUSE, BUT THE OWNERS WOULDN'T SELL UNLESS THEY BOUGHT THE EMPTY LOT NEXT DOOR (CNN'S SPECIAL LAST NIGHT IS MY SOURCE) SO REZKO'S WIFE BOUGHT THE LOT AS A FAVOR.

Obama 08   August 21st, 2008 8:03 pm ET

Why is it that McCain even blames his lies on Obama and answers any criticism with the POW card? His antics and rationalizes give the Obama campaign the rational that everything about McCain is also on the table.

Time to release all of your military records: 60 pages released; 540 unreleased. What is hiding in the other 90%?? McCain has not been thoroughly vetted!!

Actually, both John McCain And Democrat John Glenn had equal roles in the Keating Five situation and both were cleared. Obama should probably stay away from that one, with his numerous sleazy connections.

Sarah   August 21st, 2008 8:00 pm ET

When did it become a bad thing to be wealthy in America?
You guys are putting McCain down because his wife is well to do?
The probable truth is the Mr. is always in Washington as opposed spending time in those homes and the Mrs. is the one who enjoys them.
When Obama sells a bunch (more) books and also starts buying multiple homes, will you still consider it bad?
Follow and agree because you believe in his principles and ideas not because he told you to.

Gene   August 21st, 2008 8:00 pm ET

According to FactCheck.org... this entire ad is a lie...

Obama bought a 10 foot strip of vacant land which Rezco owned to expand his back yard... that's it. The only involvement he had with Rezco was for a project where Rezco helped funding for community restoration. All political contributions made by Rezco have gone straight to charity. Obama was NOT involved any ANY of the projects that Rezco was indited for.

The Republicans are the ones who are morally bankrupt and will lose in a landslide in November. Who sent more than 4,000 troops to die in war based on lies and fabricated intelligence? McCain supported this policy and will undoubtedly get us into more trouble if elected. At one of his so-called "town hall" meetings he agreed with a woman who said that the draft should be reinstated. Get your facts straight before you post.

See, the problem with this ad is that it's too complicated. If you're just some random person who doesn't follow this stuff, you probably have no idea what they are talking about.

Obama's ad is much more simple, and it goes to the root of the whole "McCain is old and out of touch" without putting much thought into it (thanks to McCain).

McCain got hammered today and him and the GOP threw the kitchen sink at Obama out of desperation.

McSame had a bad day yesterday. What to do? Make up something and attack Obama to get the spotlight off him. Same old song and dance. The Rezko thing played out a long time ago. If there were anything illegal about it, Obama would have been on trial also. Just try and fool the people like the Republicans always do. That's all they got! They offer no new plans for the future, only recycled stuff every election...abortion, gay marriage, war. Sound familiar?

Jack   August 21st, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Another example of Obama’s inexperience. He should have never taken on this home deal.

Why not compare that he has a better-looking head of hair than McCain?

LET'S KEEP IT REAL   August 21st, 2008 7:48 pm ET

McCain needs to get his behind somewhere an sit it down I'm sure the last thing he really wants is someone investigating his past. What I find extremely funny is the fact that he can hatch up so much information about Obama's affairs and not give an account for the number of homes he own.

I'm sure as low down as McCain and his fellow Republicans are IF they knew of any wrong done by Obama it would have been reported with all the extra smear they can get away with and some. What point is being made here besides the one they are forcing is Obama the fact that IF Obama could not afford his million dollar home it's because instead of running over the less advantage while chasing a dollar he was actually helping them with little financial profit, but gained a wealth of moral values that he plan to share with America.

John owns more houses than even he can count how did he obtain them? How did he get to be one of the richest senators? It sure wasn't from spending his time doing good unto mankind because the same way he only thinks of himself and what he wants now is the same way he got all that he has now. SELFISH GAIN! CHEATING ON HIS WIFE WHILE CHASING A WOMAN THAT HAD THE MONEY HE DESIRED TO GET MORE!

My friend John is the last one to question any one's morality!

JWC   August 21st, 2008 7:48 pm ET

All of you Obamaniacs shouting "Keating Five, Keating Five" need to learn that McCain did not violate any law of the United States or the Senate. It was a mistake of poor judgement and McCain has admitted that it was one of his greatest mistakes.

@Scott L

I sure love Obama's energy plan. No more nuclear power (we need it Obama), no offshore drilling (so we are forced to buy it from people who hate us), just check your tires and we should all be fine. More solar, wind, and energy research is great but we also need more nuclear power, and in the short term offshore drilling.

Unfortunately, the campaigns are relying on our ADHD-type attention span to ensure the only topics that cross our lips are the least important part of the candidate's past activities, the vast majority of which can easily be refuted to be untrue or at least a victim of interpretation.

That I and so many of us have thinking, intellectually curious minds and a real concern over the future direction of this country, and what our children and future generations will inherit, means very little to the "strategists" running the campaigns.

These tactics are demeaning, and frankly, if to desire to be informed and addressed as an adult is to be termed and labeled an "elitist", then to the campaigns I plead: PLEASE pander to this elitist citizen and patriot to exhaustion and avoid these schoolyard, adolescent antics.

And.....where's the crime???? Is this all McCain and his camp has???

Matt   August 21st, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Hmm lets see his wife is rich and buys homes for investments. Rather than say he has 5 and it turn out to be 7, and then he's really out of touch he wanted to make sure the right number got out there. And like he said it's mostly the condo's. I'm guessing his wife(who makes a lot of money) invested in real estate. As opposed to ohhbama who for a long time was in Rezko's pocket. Gee I wonder if Nobama will now return all the money from his previous state senate run since he's already returned the "Rezko money" They both have the same issue they're politicians. And politicians deal with some people who end up being disreputable. Abramoff had his hand with every lobbyist and politician on both sides of the isle. Rezko had his hand in every Chicago politicians pocket. Like the saying goes, Let e who is without sin cast the first stone. And since we all know that Uhhhbama is the One or Messiah or whatever his followers are calling him he new he was perfectly safe from any controversy involving real estate or corrupt politicians....Not.

I'll take someone who's wife bought some property over someone who bought some property with a Criminal any day of the week.

How about obama take real questions and stop using the teleprompter. Oh wait, he hasn't received the appellation Uhhbama for nothing. He's about as clumsy as bush when it comes to thinking on his feet.

Since you dems haven't stopped buchering McCains name and not respecting him I think it's time some of us Republicans returned the favor.

Change without substance is Status Quo....No to O.

Ron   August 21st, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Why do all of McCains ads border on slander and twisted news snipets? What I find odd is that McCain has been in office for @25 years he should have a laundry list of changes and accomplishments that he implimented. Instead attack ads and promotes war. As far I find the FAITH INTERVIEW his answer to time of conception funny I liken it to the FAMILY GUY when Marge was running for Mayor her answer to all the question "911"

Ryan   August 21st, 2008 7:40 pm ET

McCain : Can't count his 13 million dollars worth of houses. Probably why he failed to pay taxes on many of them.

McCain: Main economic advisor called YOU...yes YOU...a whiner for suffering in a time of economic downturn.

McCain: Thinks a person making less than 5 million in income isn't rich.

THIS MAN WILL RUIN OUR ECONOMY AND INFRASTRUCTURE...all while having us fight in Iran and Eastern Europe.

Vote Obama, for your family's sake.

Chris   August 21st, 2008 7:39 pm ET

I love how the only people who ever bring racial issues up during this campaign are Barack Obama and the liberal posters on CNN.com. McCain and his upporters are concerned with issues, experience, credibility and readiness to lead a nation, not skin color. Get over it and stop playing the race card.

Denise   August 21st, 2008 7:39 pm ET

How many of you saw last night's special on CNN? Well, I sure did and NOTHING Sen. Obama did was illegal with the purchase of his house. On the other hand, McCain was cheating on his first wife before he met Cindy McCain.

McCain in my humble opinion cannot win based on facts, his senate record or anything else. This is why his camp started this negative ad crap. People wake up!

Re. Rezko, there's very little there–see the Illinois papers that investigated this thoroughly rather than McCain's smears.

I'm hoping we get just as much detailed financial investigations about McCain's mysterious 4,6,7,8,9–whatever number–houses–especially about the acquisition deals they involve and the likely tax shelters they provide.

McCain deserves to have his 'Obama is Elitist' smear bounce back on himself as it rightly should since the McCains are far more elitist compared to regular Americans. The hypocrisy was too much to swallow.

And don't you love how the Obama fans quickly dispersed these past few days? I' read these every day and there are, in my opinion, half of the responses. And the other half are making fun of Sen Clinton's debt. Because that is hilarious.

Dan, Maryland   August 21st, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Does the McCain campaign really want to do this? With the things in McCain's closet to bring up so called "scandals" that Obama has been cleared of is rediculous. Take the Keating Five as a a perfect example.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 21st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

HOW ABOUT $3.6 BILLION DOLLARS OF YOUR TAX PAYERS MONEY TO BAIL OUT JOHN MCCAIN & KEATING 5 AFTER STEALING FROM INVESTORS. THAT'S RIGHT $3.6 BILLION DOLLARS STOLEN BY THE KEATING 5 AKA JOHN MCCAIN. NOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH SILVER BANK AND JOHN MCCAIN, LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT.

Jack Mehoff, Orlando   August 21st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

That's right-Rezko and Obama were "tight." Follow the money and Obama will be in deep doo doo.

Jim   August 21st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Where is the honorable, decent John McCain. He disappoints me. I at one time respected his courage and service to his country. That has all been flushed down the toilet.
What I am coming to believe is that McCain will just be another Bush administration ,,,,,only the name on the oval office will change....

Robert   August 21st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

pathetic mccain campaign. of course, you can suspect the connnection between obama and businessman rezko, but you ABSOLUTELY cannot make a conclusion based on your suspecion.

Mila   August 21st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

So basically you have Obama with his dirty dealings taking money from criminals to buy a million dollar house he can't afford. He does this of course because of his huge ego and his desire to show off so he can pretend he's something he's not and of course to show off!!

And then Obama tries to make something out of the fact that McCain doesn't want to brag on and on about how many houses he owns. – Homes Mccain actually CAN afford by the way unlike the phony Obama.

Mccain cares more about the country, more about Americans, more about sacrifice and doing what's right than running around the world trying to show off, and trying to brag about his homes. Obama just cares about looking down on people and trying to be superior with his inflated ego.

That's what I thought...   August 21st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Why is this info buried in political ticker, when Obama's attack is still front and center? I thought there was no bias media coverage... guess I was wrong...

CCS   August 21st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Why is it every single time Obama airs an ad about McCain, it's based on truth and exact quotes yet every time McCain airs an ad about Obama, it's based on exaggerations and falsehoods?

My guess is it's because the only way to come up with something negative about Obama is to make it up?

Bob (Illinois)   August 21st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Oh, Wow! So much (again) for a "respectful campaign"? McCain has lost ALL my respect. His ads are loaded with outright light lies and gross exaggerations.

Disgusting!

s.positive   August 21st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Mcbush, how did you get seven homes as a senator????????????

Simon Buckland   August 21st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Rezko yet again – this has been thoroughly investigated by the Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/letters/chi-0316edit1mar16,0,7855333.story) – there's no meat left in this bone. Read the story if you haven't already; "boneheaded" is how Obama describes his action, and that's all it is. Any of us might have done something similar, but an aspirant POTUS should have been more cautious. It was a mistake, Obama's not God, get over it.

There are many similar or worse skeletons in McCain's closet – but it's not minor errors of this sort that make him unsuited for the job.

Anyway, McCain's campaign firing this gun now rather than in November shows how rattled they were by the "houses" shtick. Good – it's time the real contrasts between the two started to get exposed.

Mike in FXBG   August 21st, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Obama (aka Howdy Doody) is in no position to debate housing with McCain, especially when Obama buys a house through a convicted felon.

Kaye- Jacksonville FL   August 21st, 2008 7:19 pm ET

I can't begin to express my dislike for the Repugs, John McCain and their same old tactics. What choice does Obama have but to fight back? I hope he comes out of Denver with his heavy weight gloves tied and ready to punch hard. McCain, with the Repug machine behind him, has sunk to the same lows we've seen before from Karl Rove and the thugs that promoted W....a huge disappointment, but not a surprise.

That is old, old news that has been vetted, and Obama had already
said he made a mistake he should not had deal with this Rezko guy. McCain has the nerve to be tellling us that Obama does nto understand the poor and the downtrodden. But he McCai with his millions of dollars and 9 houses can relate to us. What a laugh. McCain is insulting us and talking down to us. It blows my mind how many people would believe him. It is a fact that whe you are that rich it is very hard to relate to someone who cannot afford the next meal. Wake up American.... McCain is a lier and a Joker. He is talking
us all for fools.

Terry   August 21st, 2008 7:17 pm ET

If John McCain wants to talk about "land deals", then let's report about his illegal/corrupt Arizona land deal with (SunCor Development) Steven Betts. By the way, we (family/friends) wonder how much money Steven Betts has raised for John McCain's presidential bid.

Barbara Campbell   August 21st, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Walt D   August 21st, 2008 7:16 pm ET

St. John McCain,

Obama did nothing wrong in buying the house from Rezko. But there is a problem when you cannot recall the number of houses you own. It reflects either a lack of due diligence and inteeligence on you part or that, coupled with the many gaffes you've made to date, your in the early stages of dementia. And that can be a real problem for our country if your elected president.

Let's add to it: There was nothing illegal found to have been done. Vs the Keating Five, where there WERE people put in jail for their involvement. One of those people involved was John McCain.

If you think 'not doing something illegal' is worse then 'doing something illegal', then you are obviously going to vote for McCain anyways. The rest of us are waking up and finding out that McCain offers a 27 year record of corrupt politics and self interest for a few close friends and lobbyists.

I haven't completely ruled out voting for McCain, but his ties to corruption run longer and deeper then any of Obama's.

Casey - Missouri   August 21st, 2008 7:14 pm ET

Just like McCain... point the finger at someone else to hide who HE really is - rich, more houses than he can count and all because he had the foresight to grab a rich heiress even before getting divorced from his first family.

NOW THAT'S JUDGMENT! He's got his - you're on your own.

What a crock. McCain probably can't REMEMBER where the houses ARE, I mean... he's proven how little geography he knows without Joe Lieberman whispering in his ear.

McCain = Bush = 4 more years of the SAME lies, the SAME aggression, the SAME giveaways to BIG OIL.

McCain is a moral and ethical wasteland.

Obama has committed no crime with Rezko, and all the money that Rezko ultimately donated to the Obama campaign was transferred to charity. McCain had to do the same thing with donations he took from questionable sources.

Slimy Republican politics. I hope Americans are smart enough to see through this garbage.

60 year old white woman Supporting Obama   August 21st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Why hadn't CNN included the Obama response to this ad as they always do when there is something scrutinizing McCain??

Why aren't these ads from either side scrutinized when published? Isn't that the ROLE of a NEWS media? All of the claims in this ad were debunked during the primaries and your news staff is aware of it.

Is McCain getting "testy"?

SONGBIRD MCCAIN   August 21st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Lies...

Obama purchased the home as the highest bidder. The owner was not Rezko, but rather Rezko's neighbor! After Obama moved in, he paid full market value for what was in essence Rezko's backyard so that Obama's girls could have a nice backyard. No favors were granted at all.

Unlike McCain's involvement in the Keating 5 scandal, Obama was never even involved in Rezko's trial. He was not involved ... because he was not involved!

Yet another example of McCain not being able to win on values or ideas, so (like the GOP always does) he resorts to mud slinging. Throw enough lies out there and eventually the moronic, dittohead public will believe. Ask Bush and Co. how that 9-11/ Saddam mantra worked. You right-wing sheep.

pat C.   August 21st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

BGIV in NC   August 21st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

This is OLD news. We hashed this out during the primary. John must have been too busy trying to find out where all of his houses were and not seen the Rezko headlines that were floated for almost three weeks. Hey didn't McHouses belong to some cool group of five guys – Keating something or another?

It's about time-hit BO where it hurts-BO comes from the cesspool of American politics-the Daleys-who of course have ties with Rezko-dirty, dirty, dirty!!!-Here comes the tidal wave!-gonna be fun and watch Obama UM his way out of this one!!!

The Daleys delivered IL for JFK and they coined the phrase-"Vote Early and Vote Often" in Nov. 1960.-

Indiana Voter   August 21st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

It's amazing that the mccain campaign has said very little about what it wants to do for the country. The experience touted is POW. I applaud mccain for his service to his country but it does not qualify him for president. What specifically has he done in his 26 years in congress to better the life of Americans?

If we as voters allow ourselves to be suckered in emotionally by all of this negative campaigning then we deserve what we get because it works. When I close my eyes and listen to mccain, I get flashbacks to George Bush who said and acted the same.

Please, let's step up and take our country back from the politicians, lobbists and special interest groups!

As we all know there was no findings of wrongdoing on Senator Obama's part in the Rezco trial so once again Senator McCain is putting out his norm of half truth and out right lies. He is trying to deflect from what is known about he & Cindy owning all those houses. Maybe he may have forgotten or be having one of his senior moments so lets not be so hard on him but he at least needs to tell the truth.

IF Obama is that dirty, then why isn't he facing charges?? Surely a man running for President would be scrutinized more heavily.. More McCain tricks of flinging mud and seeing what sticks..

McCain has over 55+ lobbyists working on his campaign. McCain has 7 homes, Obama has 1.. Now who is the elitist? McCain got favors in the Navy because of daddy. McCain sang to the Viet Cong during the war to less his punishments.. He is NOT the hero he is made out to be!! If he is such a hero why no M.O.H (Medal of Honor)??

McCain will raise taxes and lower medicare payments.. He collects Naval Disability but yet he won't release his Navy records.. What is he hiding??

Obama '08 in Little Rock   August 21st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

CNN or McCNN,

McCain could not remember the number of houses that he and his wife have. Not "the number of properties" which undoubtedly is an even larger number - if he can't remember the number of houses, he surely can't remember all the "properties" they have. But what would you expect from a man who even when he was young finished 894th out of 899 cadets.

There are a lot of issues (cost of food, energy, wars, dwindling 401Ks etc) affecting we as Americans and yet we sit and let our leaders ran stupid negative ads against each other, and we use that as a yardstick to measure how good they would be as a leader. WOW!! No wonder we've lost our respect in the world market. Boy we have not credibility.

Senator Obama simply bought A .*.one house* from rezko
He was investigated when rezko was and was not that tied in with him
he was not tied in any illegally activity to rezko thats the *important issue*
