Sen. Obama's campaign released a new ad, 'Seven'.
Sen. Obama's campaign released a new ad, 'Seven'.

(CNN) – Barack Obama’s campaign continued to hit John McCain on his failure to answer a question on the number of homes he owns with a new ad Thursday, as the presumptive Democratic nominee hammered the same point on the campaign trail in Virginia and the McCain camp battled back.

Watch: Obama hits McCain on homes

“Somebody asked John McCain, 'how many houses do you have?' and he said, 'I'm not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff,'” said Obama at a Thursday morning campaign stop. “True quote! 'I'm not sure, I'll have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and he said, 'at least four.' 'At least four.'

“Now think about that - I guess if you think that being rich means you gotta make five million dollars, and if you don't know how many houses you have, then it's not surprising that you might think the economy is fundamentally strong,” he continued. “But if you're like me and you've got one house - or you were like the millions of people who are struggling right now to keep up with their mortgage so that they don't lose their home - you might have a different perspective. …

He also said that there was a “fundamental gap of understanding” between McCain’s world and “what people are going thru every single day here in America.”

The Republican’s campaign continued to press their long-time charge that Obama himself is an elitist. “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers. “Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?

“The reality is that Barack Obama’s plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans.”

The Obama campaign’s new ad, released hours after McCain’s comment was published, also paints the portrait of John McCain as privileged and insulated from current economic woes. “Maybe you’re struggling just to pay the mortgage on your home. But recently, John McCain said ‘The fundamentals of our economy are strong,’” says the announcer in the 30-second spot, “Seven.”

“Hm,” he continues skeptically, as the ad flashes a picture of a house with a foreclosure sign in the front yard.

“Then again, that same day, when asked how many houses he owns, McCain lost track. He couldn’t remember. Well, it’s seven. Seven houses,” he continues. On-screen, the legend flashes: “it’s seven. worth 13 million dollars.”

The White House appears on-screen, as he concludes: “And here’s one house America can’t afford to let John McCain move into.”

The ad is Obama’s fifth negative spot in the past two days.

It was just a joke.

I'll have my staff get back to you.

Is this how More-of-the-Same McLame is going to answer questions in the debates, when he won't have his note cards to refer to?

J.C.   August 21st, 2008 12:23 pm ET

In fact, I think McCain is cool. He is not that interested in the number of houses he or Cindy owns, because he has better things to do than counting their investments. This just shows how little McCain thinks of money. This is another proof to that Senator McCain does put his self interest after his country, although I haven't decided which candidate to vote for.

TO ALL INTELLECTUAL INDIVIDUALS LIKE MYSELF THAT THINKS THESE ATTACKS ARE JUVENILE, WE HAVE TO REALIZE THAT SADLY THIS IS THE WAY TO WIN AN ELECTION BECAUSE MANY AMERICANS ARE EASILY PERSUADED BY THESE TACTICS. WHAT ELSE CAN EXPLAIN JOHN MCCAIN PUTING OUT AD COMPARING OBAMA TO PARIS HILTON AND NOW HE IS UP IN THE POLLS. OR HOW GOERGE BUSH GOT ELECTED NOT ONCE BUT TWICE.

Alex in TX   August 21st, 2008 12:23 pm ET

As much as Americans' claim they want politicians to run a clean campaign, the average American idiot still falls for the dirty tactics as witnessed by the narrowing of polls resulting from McCain's recent negative "surge." Until the american electorate wisens up and refuses to fall for these tactics they will continue to be used by polititicians.

Obama...fight fire with fire. The gloves need to come off.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 21st, 2008 12:22 pm ET

JOHN MCCAIN DOESN'T KNOW HOW MANY HOUSES HE OWNS JUST LIKE WHEN ASKED WHY HE CHEATED ON CAROL AND WHY HE FILED FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE WITH CINDY WHILE STILL MARRIED AND LIVING WITH CAROL. MCCAIN ANSWERED, "I DON'T KNOW". FACT.

gl   August 21st, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I can not believe the McSame camp keep calling Obama elitist. That is all they do is call Obama bad names. I am glad to see Obama fighting back.

Rob   August 21st, 2008 12:22 pm ET

this is soo stupid. McCain's family (his wife) worked hard to get what they have now. for me it is the american dream. they worked hard and managed to get a good life. how can this be out of touch. AND i am sure McCain paid the real price and did not receive faked loans and cheaper houses from a friend like Rezko.

where is the story. I start to dislike Obama more and more every day.

BlueInVA   August 21st, 2008 12:22 pm ET

The difference is stark. Obama earned his money last year, from his Senate salary, sales of his book and whatever working-mom Michelle brought in. The McCain family declared some $35,000,000+ in income in 2007, mostly from investments from his wife's portfolio. That's not earned income!

And McCain - or his wife - hasn't checked out the price of homes in the Chicago suburbs of late, or he -rather, excuse me, his staff - would know that $1,000,000 is the going rate for homes in those suburbs. And, like homes everywhere, I'll bet it's dropped significantly in value.

I'll bet Obama could tell you the exact worth of his one home. McCain will have to have his staff get back to you, but first they'll need to determine how many homes there are. Is it 4? 7? 10? Some say 13.

The man has no idea how many homes he owns, people! That's the story.

McCain or Senator Edwards or Al Gore or Senator Kerry or Senator Kennedy.

Two millionaires doing the school yard rumble over the number of homes they own? Please. Obama is on his way to the same wealth as McCain. McCain just has a 25 year head start. Michelle Obama said that this would be the only time Barack could run for president because after this election they will be too wealthy and out of touch with the population. None of these candidates are in touch with what we everyday folks go through. They have forgotten their pasts (especially Obama).

For some reason Obama is seen as the flip-flopper when "mavric McCain" has flipped on just about every issue. During the Republicna primairy debates at RR Library, Anderson Cooper asked if America was better off than they were 8 years ago and McCain said we were. Only Huckabee said we were worse off. Now McCain has an add out saying were worse off than we were 4 years ago. Which is it? Obama needs to highlight all of the about turns McCain has made.

Everything in my being screams McCain is a fake. The only reason he is even being considered for presidency is because he fits the following criteria:

1. White
2. Male
3. Old as dirt
4. Military experience
5. Again white

If Obama was everything he is smart, intelligent, intellectual, gifted, even-minded, and the list goes on; plus white. The conversations being held about him wouldn't even exsist. I wish I didn't know how many houses I own!!!!!!!

Who cares how many houses anyone has, when you're swimming in
money does it matter if the depth is 10 ft. deep or 50 ft. deep? The issue is which candidate has the most experience in governmental
affairs dealing with public policy. The fact is most political figures have
deep pockets financially. Obama's campaign focus is on mundane
items and not on substance. This guy is pure minor league.

J.C.   August 21st, 2008 12:18 pm ET

I think fighting over the number of houses is a negative campaign tactic.
We all know Cindy is rich, which is not a crime or setback for McCain presidency. The McCain's are older than Obama so they should accumulate more wealth naturally. Buying real estate for investment is practiced by both Republicans and Democrats. I just don't see the merit of this attack.

Obama camp has to come up with something positive and constructive against McCain. Let's not take the Hillary route. She has done enough damage to Obama. Why repeat it against yourself?

Crane   August 21st, 2008 12:18 pm ET

The fact that he owns seven houses wouldn't bother me as much if he wasn't trying to paint Obama as "elitist".

This is just too easy, why haven't republicans picked this up?

Sarah   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

CNN, I can't believe you're letting the McCain campaign keep throwing in stuff about "Rezko" and "Ayers" even though it's long since been proven that Obama did absolutely NOTHING wrong. In articles where Obama has responded to an attack on McCain you've critiqued Obama's responses; please say SOMETHING about how McCain's Rezko allegations have long since been shown to be nonsense instead of just repeating the McCain campaign's responses verbatim.

J   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Anyone who is quoting the "$5 million a year is rich" is totally missing the point, knowingly changing the facts or trying to score points with the lowest common denominator. McCain said $5 million as an arbitrary number as the question was when should the tax rate go up to a high level, i.e. what income level, rich, would warrant excessive tax. He said he doesnt want anyone to face higher taxes, hence the inflated number.

And give him a break on his first wife, he admitted it was his failure but being apart for many years and coming home obviously stressed isnt conducive to a good marriage going forward when you're life is 180 degrees different from that which you were used to.

S.Kelly   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

U.S. presidential elections have long been a ridiculously expensive chess game for the wealthy. I can't imagine the majority of the U.S. electrorate will be genuinely attracted to one candidate over another by this latest mud-slinging. These kind of opportunistic media clashes are orgies for the syncophants and handlers with little relevance to voters. Only the wilfully naive will ever believe that a modern president will emerges heroically from his/her log cabin and factory job. A shame when the real issues facing America and its allies are buried under such flotsdam.

Pat Riot   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

Joshua   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

I'm sad that the campaign has come to this, but it's McCain's fault. If he hadn't wasted so much money and time lying about Obama's tax plan the campaign wouldn't have gotten so nasty. It's just a shame he started it, because McCain's wallet won't be able to compete with a negative Obama campaign. He should have kept it civil, and maybe he would have survived. Now that he pushed the other side to play dirty, he doesn't stand much of a chance.

David P. Kronmiller   August 21st, 2008 12:17 pm ET

JOE GREEN – correction – McCain was in the Senate for over 25 years do you think it was volunteer work. No it wasn't. He got paid. His grandfather and farther were admirals – they get top pay and pensions as well as full medical benefits and various discounts from mortgages to investment profile advise. McCain may not have inherited as much money as his wife but the rich don't marry the poor, especially in those days. McCain has his own money and combined with his wife makes his claims of being "one of the average boyz" a joke. His salary as a Senator is $169,000 a year what could you do with that money if you never really had to spend a dime. No transportation expense, no food expense and no mortgage (paid by the Mrs.). Democrats are trying to paint McCain as out of touch because he has some nice things. It's the "haves" vs the "have nots". Obama has nice things too. He has a mansion in Chicago which he could not have purchased without the help of the Rezko family. Because of Mrs. Tony Rezko Senator Obama was able to purchase his home for $300,000 less than the asking price. It was probably the only real estate deal either Rezko was involved in that didn't add to his slumlord credits.

No political official is in touch with 'real Americans' - Democrat, Republican or otherwise. The current field of candidates and the government itself is nothing but a rich person's club where officials and hopefuls do what's best for their own stock portfolios first. Even John Edwards showed that going from rags into riches doesn't mean he understands 'real Americans' now or make one immune to the effects of money, power and greed.

A 'regular American' could never be elected because of the obscene amounts of money it takes to launch a campaign. Politicians don't care about their constituents who are living paycheck to paycheck - all they care about is winning the next election.

carlo   August 21st, 2008 12:15 pm ET

First of all, McCain and the Rethuglicans have been slinging mud at Obama for weeks now, so payback is a beautiful thing. Second of all, Rezko was convicted for campaign fraud, and Obama was not arrested, tried, or officially implicated in anything. He paid for his ONE house. That dog won't hunt.

I am amazed at how many people are saying "big deal" while they are living from check to check. Everyone from Hawaii is not rich. Besides, according to the McCain standard of $5 million being rich, Obama came up about $1 million short.

How many pairs of $600 dollar shoes does he have?
How many times has he lost his temper?
Does he ever work on weekends?
Does he read, ever?
What does he do when he doesn't get his way?
Does he have any minority friends?
Why did he vote against the King Holiday Bill?
Will you be able to vote for him?

Splurge   August 21st, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Changing positions and tactics he opposed during primary to get elected is one thing. But with ads like this, Obama has degenerated into the very type of politician he claimed to be running against. Has he been lying to us all along?

I don't care about their money...

Obama started making real money only after his book started selling.
Unlike McCain who married into it.

Problem with McCain is he's always been a loose cannon, who's now an OLD loose cannon.
Sword rattling, reckless, foolish old man. Lost ALL independent credibility when he supported Bush.
DANGEROUS!!!

Obama is nowhere NEAR as risky as McCain.

Everyone who starts his post with "I am life long democrat voting for McCain" is lying. They are republicans hoping and praying that the election comes more quickly than John McSenile can lose it.

It won't. Obama will win in a landslide. Should have locked him in a closet until the election.

"thru"? Really? I know it's online reporting, but isn't there a spell check for these things?

Liberal4Obama   August 21st, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Do we need any more confirmation that John McCain is an Elitist? I mean really, $520 Ferragamo loafers and 10 properties scattered around the country.

Doug D   August 21st, 2008 12:13 pm ET

McCain's arguement that Obama is an elitist doesn't hold much water when you either can't remember or don't know how many houses you own. This is the kind of thing that gives campaign staffers an instant headache.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 21st, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Since when does being successful disqualify someone from being President? Obama isn't eating PB&J sandwiches. This is a nonissue. Try again Obama, your polls are dropping faster than a cheap hookers panties.

Martha   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

McShame needs to stop the b.s. about the vacation in Hawaii. Obama has relatives, i.e. Grandmother, and friends in that State. And so what if he takes vacation at Granny's house. Maybe he could ask McShame to rent one of the 10 houses he doesn't know about.

Patrick, Takoma Park MD   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

My guess is if you asked McCain about Arugula, he'd say it was an island in the Caribbean.

Daniel So Cal   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I think McCain's problem is that if you are going to campaign as an average American, you should at least know how many homes you own. I think most people could see someone owning two homes, but four is alot. Given that his wife is worth $100 million, pretty much trumps Obama and his home and the Republican claim that Obama is an elitist.

Perhaps McCain forgot about the "surge" in homes he purchased.

Elly   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I hope they know how absurd McSame looks when he tries to paint
Obama as an elitist...the owner of 10 homes..Obama owns 1
Obama would have to go many years to catch up to the wealth the MCCains have
watch the great revealing show on MCSame and Obama by John King and suzanne Melville you will learn alot!!! excellent shows by both!!!
Senator Obama worked hard to get what he has in life so he can relate to the average american and their hardships
McCain has had wealth for years
I ask you in all fairness WHO is the elitist here…Certainly NOT Obama

Dee   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

McCain is a McMess! This guy has issues...serious issues. It seems as if he doesn't really know too much about anything. He always has to check with someone else about his personal things. I think he just tries to get his lies right....or he really just doesn't know. That's what happens when you are up in age. It won't surprise me if McSame doesn't even know his own name in a year. I don't trust him. He is just Bush's mini-me anyway. Whatever Bush wants...McCain will do. He also wants to bring back the draft. He is against abortion. Wow...talk about a blast from the past! If you leave it up to McCain...you will not have a say in anything.

Obama in "O8" (Because I care about my family's well-being. Do you care about your family???)

Julie   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

According to McCain's definition of being rich, Obama is not there yet....if he only made 4 million dollars, he will need one more million to qualify as rich!!!

chris (hartford, ct)   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

What on earth is wrong with arugula? In a nation that is becoming more and more over-weight (which in turn causes healthcare to become exponentially more expensive) should it really be okay to paint eating healthy as elitist?

Tennisguypitt   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Obama '08

Nathan, Texas   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Bill from Florida, check it out. Obama pointed out that McCain not only has seven houses, but also said that the economy was good, that he doesn't know much about the economy, that one is rich once they get 5 million a year and that McCain wants to give companies like Exon 1.2 million dollar tax breaks. Just letting you know there is more to the story. If you haven't noticed already the republicans are in bed with big businesses while the democrats are working for the people. I am independent and can easily see the difference.

Randy in Pennsylvania   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

This campaign totally sucks!!!!!!!

McCain's camp can't come up with anything positive so all they ever does is lie/rip on Obama and all Obama can do is defend himself. He doesn't want to go negative because that is what a REAL CHRISTIAN is supposed to do. BUT that is all McCain does.

What really sucks is that America seems to want the negativity (per the polls). McCain wins, we deserve to go down in flames.

57 territories   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

by the way , all you fools who incessantly mention the Obama 57 states gaffe....

There are 57 territories that hold democratic primaries. So the only slip was to say state and not territory. He got the number of contests right. Cut the guy some slack, he sleeps 4 hours a night and is running around all day.

HA   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Obama's housing dealings are matter of public record if anyone will bother to look. John McCains dealings are not. Ask John McCain what he had to do to purchase his last house. Follow the money on that one and see were it leads. Hint: After his failed 2000 bid for the White House; what did John McCain do with all the money he recieved from donors?

Jerry   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I guess hypocrisy REALLY knows no bounds. How much money did the NObamas make last year? The NObama's income last year: over five million $dollars$. How can Senator NObama understand how most of us feel with that kind of money in the piggy bank? So what if Senator McCain has one, five, ten houses. He should be applauded instead of crucified. I am starting to be ashamed of my party. The Democratic Party wasn't this bad before Senator NObama declared his candidacy.

Of course, Senator NObama is trying to win the presidency no matter what. Can this man and his misguided supporters be trusted with our future? Seriously, all voters should give it deep, deep thought!

Greg   August 21st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

If you Democrats spent as much time improving your situation instead of complaining about others who have done better than you, you too wouldn't know how many houses you own. Jealous? Of course you are, it's obvious!

Instead of congratulating him for being successful (which is the only reasonable response) you complain that he has more than you do. So what? Life isn't fair...deal with it. If you want to improve your life, go to school, get a better job. Whatever you do, DO NOT rely on the government...that won't get you anywhere.

The government is here to protect our borders and manage our currency. The government has no business being involved in anything else. It certainly shouldn't be stealing from those who work to give it to those too lazy to get a job!! Those of you who are complaining are jealous losers.

Wes   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

As long as George Bush & John McBush throw a few morsels to their sheep the Good Bushies keep posting away like Nero & Company are doing a great job with this country.

It starts at the top people and just how bad does it have to get before you use your God given common sense and vote these incompetent criminals out of office?

Chris   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

So the guy is rich...? Big deal, when did being rich mean you were a scumbag? I seem to re-call a 2004 election in which a certain John Kerry had around 2 billion in the bank... but oh ya, hes a Democrat so its different.... Please, just be quiet Obamabots, if your guy is now resorting to calling McCain out on his homes, he is done.

Pat MO   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Hey Guys, It's not about the houses – it's about memory loss and the inability to construct a sensible response.

So many houses that he can't count them.

Didn't know that he was still married when he applied for a marriage license with Cindi.

Lied about cheating on his wife with Cindi.

Had AFFAIRS while married to his wife who had been seriously injured.

Does not admit to Cindi having a poor half sister.

Definitely not someone that has my vote. He reminds me of the Chinese who pick the more physically attractive girl over the less attractive girl to make them look better.

The only one who can make mistakes is Obama and get away with it.

Stop this about his first wife, we don't know the whole story because we weren't there. Remember he was not home for alot of years and she could have made another life for herself. Also, if you talk about him, what about the people Obama threw under the bus?

Some of McCains houses could be his wife's, or maybe he bought one for his mother or his children. Give me a break with all this.

I know you Obama supporters are getting scared. The polls are not what you like them to be. He is not a landslide and you are picking on everything you can.

Now that the troops will be home soon, you don't have that anymore. You are running out of things to blame Sen. McCain for. So, now lets count houses.

Also, I would rather Cindy has first lady then someone who is just now proud to be American and who is very racist.

J.D.   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

McCain can tell us when life begins and who is evil but can't tell us how many homes he owns. As it says int he Bible, in John 14:1-3 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions.." I guess we just discovered God.

I'll Have To Ask My Staff   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

John,

Can your staff vote? Because if you have to go to them to tell you how many homes you have, you won't get my vote. And anyone who has to do that is a little senile.

Los   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

People involved in politics at this level are invariably wealthy. There's no point in trying to figure out who's richer.

All thanks to Bush/McCain foreign policy and diplomacy.

And the house thing was not a softball tossed to Obama; it was a question asked to McCain that he couldn't (or wouldn't) answer.

DarylD   August 21st, 2008 12:11 pm ET

McCain doesn't know how many houses he owns? McCain doesn't
realize that Iraq does not border Pakistan? Mccain says there are only
two important aspects to a Vice President's duties, neither of which is
replacing the President if he dies in office? We don't need another
Moron-In-Chief in the White House. Eight years of stupid decision-
making and Bushisms coming out of our President's mouth is
enough!

Okay, so the McCains own several houses. We know where the money for those houses came from (Bud). Obama has only one house (where does he live when Congress is in session). What we do not know is why he was able to buy his house for $300,000 below market value-or do we. Maybe what we do not know is what he did for Rezco!

Dan, IL   August 21st, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Signs that Obama is getting desperate. It's easy to be positive when the polls are in your favor but things change. Hey Obama, come back to Illinois and do some work – it's your job as a legislator – you need the experience.

We should hear more from the media about McCain's supporting reinstitution of the draft, as reported by Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. McCain is dangerous; he is for shooting first and asking questions later. He is quite likely to start WWIII, without making any diplomatic effort to prevent unnecssary military conflicts.

He say he knows how to win wars, but we need a President who knows how to win the peace

War should be a last resort in any international dispute.

_______________________________________________

Obama said he is pro-choice, but not pro-abortion. He didn't think he has the right to tell people what to do with their bodies.

He also said that when life begins is a moral/philosophical/religious debate that is better left to an individual's own personal morality, and not his decision to make.

What else?

Rich in Seattle   August 21st, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Don't worry, now that Obama is fighting back, the McCain camp will have many more opportunities in the future to address new Gaffs that McCain will make. I am sure right now he's making one.

Didn't he just say yesterday that he thought the re-instating the draft wasn't something he disagreed with doing? I mean.... hello?

'Bout time someone starts calling McCain out on all the stupid stuff that comes out of his mouth. Or does McCain still not speak for the McCain campaign as they once charged?

Roberto   August 21st, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Aside from the # of houses issue, isn't it interesting in today's headlines that Condi Rice is negotiating with Iraq on a troop withdrawl timeline. Exactly what Obama was getting slammed on a month ago. So is everyone in the Bush administration now 'surrender monkeys'?

Just shows that the blowhards on the right are real good at sticking their foot in their mouths.

Will, NJ (18)   August 21st, 2008 12:08 pm ET

After running a campaign based off of tackling the issues whilst John McCain fabricates personal attack ads we have seen a decline in Obama's number. It is evident the majority of Americans or at least those who get polled either don't bother to keep informed or are too mentally challenged to make a coherent decision. I only hope they live long enough to suffer the consequences and suffer them hard. Meanwhile, I suppose I can spend my life mired in other people's mistakes.

not saying obama isn't elite... but it's the age old pot calling kettle black.

too bad the people who cling to their guns and religion are also too stupid to understand that mccain isn't for them.

How does a D student graduate to be an officer?
Answer: You get your military Daddy to put in a word for you.
How does someone who's responsible for soldiers dying from a plane accident that he caused–become a hero? Answer: You come from a high profile military background, and you milk the fact that you were captured for 6 years.
How does an inept Congressman get to be a Senator for umpteen years? Answer: You have an affair with a beer bimbo, and work the system on the Hill towards your benefit. When you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar (Keating 5), you promise you're going to reform and produce a reform bill, that you yourself ignore.

INDENPENDENT - NYC   August 21st, 2008 12:08 pm ET

The point that is so troubling is – could one imagine how much it cost to heat all 4 plus homes in the winter months. Now consider this – McCain wasn't concerned about the high cost of oil until the American public became concerned. That's how different he is from the average American – he's a typical RICH White American male.

Derek in Seattle   August 21st, 2008 12:08 pm ET

McCain actually has an even 10 homes, ranches, condos, and lofts, together worth a combined estimated $13,823,269.

Richard   August 21st, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Not only is McCain out of touch with everyday Americans, he's also so senile he doesn't even know how many homes he owns. This man is too old to be president and his mind is already slipping, imagine if he wins what he's going to be like in four years. Most normal people are looking to retire and taking it easy at his age. He is so hungry for power that it overrides any normal person's desire's.

I'm so sick of the people like James saying that's he's wife's house. So what?! He lives there too you are acting like he lives in the guest house out back. They might file taxes seperately but they are still married so what one has the other has! Secondly, I'm so sick of people talking about Rezko. Obama didn't do anything wrong, if he did it would have come out in the trial. He bought his home through a realtor and the only reason why he paid less for the home was because he had the best offer prices offered to the sellers. Every freakin argument the republicans make starts like this...Ayers, Rezko, Wright.....(insert something dumb). It's getting so OLD

Lacy   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Dear Brian Rogers,
You are lying, distorting, and grasping at straws. It's quite pathetic, you getting a bit touchy aren't you?

P.S. Unlike several of your candidates homes, Obama's "million dollar" home is not by any stretch, a "mansion". Whats the average cost of your candidates houses? Just wondering...

Silvia in Boca Raton FL   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

McCain campaign went negative since the Karl Rove's protegees took over the campaign. McCain was the one who wanted to run a fair campaign. What's supposed Obama to do? Just sit down and put the other cheek. Obama has run a positive campaign, just look at some of his ads, but enough is enough.... there has to be a limit. I actually like the fact that he is fighting back. McCain is the one wearing $500 dollars shoes, but again everybody who is the elitist here? Do the Republican Party think that we are stupid?

And regarding the price of the arugula, why don't the Republican party ask the American-Italians what arugula is? I was introduced to arugula by my husband's Italian grandmother and she was not an elitist. It is easy to grow in your garden, by the way.

Dave in VA   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Yes, Brian Rogers, the guy who worries about the price of arugula DOES want to get into a debate with John McCain about who's in touch with the average American. Why? Because so far the media had given McCain a free ride, and the average American has no idea of McCain's worth.

It'll be nice to see the McCain camp on the defensive for a change.

Eileen from Maine   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

John McCain really doesn't want to tell us how many house he owns. Now that McCain has accepted Karl Rove into his heart as his saviour he must use Roves handbook which says to always look in the mirror, find the things about yourself that other people might find disturbing and then accuse your opponent of them.

Shari, NY   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Shut this old fool up, sent him back to Arizona before he America ends up in another endless war.

R.I.F.   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Thanks Molly. I was just about to say the same thing. There are no "private" beaches in Hawaii. But hey, why should the McCain camp start using "facts" in their ads and attacks on Obama now.

The Obama camp has to hit McCain hard on gaffes and these issues because the media refuses to. If Obama had of said the same thing about not remember how many houses he has this would be on CNN 24/7 by now.

The Truth   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Since when does how many houses you own, make sense in how a person is able to run a country or the politics of America. Its called being able too, or do you have to be a dirt poverty stricken person to run this country. Lets get down to the economy, energy, and things that matter, not mud slinging for gosh sakes, makes Obama like he is grasping at straws.

Joe, Chicago   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

These elitist claims are just nonsense, and represent nothing more than a distraction from our real economic problems. Both candidates have money, so what? Last I knew, it was ok to earn lots of money, accumulate wealth, and own real estate.

S Callahan   August 21st, 2008 12:07 pm ET

This is one of those stories- what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
When you give it out Sen. McCain you have to take it.
I am glad Sen. Obama is stepping up to the plate and giving it back..it's about time!
Sad thing is, I like both candidates but for the sake of our country I think Sen. Obama is the one who has grasped the vision of the American public who don't want a police state, lifelong military mentality, loss of constitutional rights; who want peace with compromise; who care about matters of the world , homefront, and their local communities and for people like me who wants their right to religious freedoms protected.

RJ   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Joe Unger San Francisco....so what is Obama to do? Let McCain have 9 out of 10 negative ads–where he says nothing at all about what he would do if president (obviously because he has no plan) and not fight back?

James....you've got to be kidding, right? The houses are in his wife's name? you can't possibly be for real? Wow, don't even know how to respond to something that ludicruos.

marcus   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

This man wants to be the next president of the united states? Think about this, it doesnt take a rocket scientest to figure this out.

Unify   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

McCain is disgusting! THOUSANDS of people have lost their homes, their jobs, and just about everything they have. And McCain plans to continue on with the same FAILED economic policies. He runs an entirely NEGATIVE campaign with enormous donations from the US Oil Industry that robbed us blind over the past year. And he has the nerve to call Obama an elitist?!?! What kind of person would actually vote for him?

Donna from Colorado Springs   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

McCain is really a sad and confused little man. If you think that the economy is basically sound and you're so rich that you can't remember how many homes you own, you have no business being the next president. You will never understand how ordinary people struggle every day to make their mortgage payments and pay their bills. So what, if you're strong on foreign policy! Foreign policy don't pay the bulldog! You can't connect with anyone below your income level. You stumble and mumble through every answer and it's really embarrasing to watch. I'm sorry John. You're just too old to lead this country.

California Voter   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Obama must have so much money to waste that he would even consider spending money on such a meaningless matter.

Dave   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I saw somebody earlier saying that McCain owning so many homes proves he can handle money. Not knowing how many homes he has proves he CAN'T handle money... he doesn't even keep track of his own investments! He has no clue.

Besides, if you really believe that McCain's wealth proves his economic prowess, then maybe you think he can fix the national debt by marrying a rich woman. McCain's money mostly came from Cindy, not his own skills.

Joyce   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

We know where McCain gets his money but where does OBAMA get HIS?????
Has Michelle done what Mrs. McCain has done with some of her
money??

If for no other reason than Mrs. McCain I would have to
vote for her husband.

songbird54   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

This is to Brian Rogers. Perhaps if you would stop telling lies about Sen. Obama and start telling the truth about McCain how he wants to continue to waste $10 billion our our tax payer dollars per month in a country that wants us out you would be much better off,

Franky   August 21st, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Ohhh man, that was pretty good...I gotta come up with some more of those...

Vet in S.A.   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Nothing wrong with being rich is there. Isn't that what all those who are struggling want?? To be rich, right?

The libs are just loving that there are so many people hurting right now, means they can grow gov't even bigger, keep people dependant on the gov't so they'll keep voting for them. Bigger, kinder gov't is not the answer!

Quit depending on the gov't people, get a job and don't be stupid with your $$, live within your means, don't buy a house you can't afford and then cry you're losing it, it's your own fault. Plus how many of those fourclousures were from people just trying to flip houses? Once again their fault, not the gov't.

Anonymous   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I also worry about the price of arugula. And gas. And healthcare. And food. And everything else.

Does pointing out that Obama is worried about the price of something (even a vegetable) really help McCain's cause when we're talking about owning multiple homes and a net worth expressed in nine figures?

How about the fact that he couldn't respond without a handler feeding the answer? That is the real issue.

The man is not fit to be president.

jojo   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

First of all, the reason congress has such a low approval rating is because they refused to impeach Bush for all his crimes. As for Obama, he's just a bright, hardworking guy who doesn't want his country to go down the tubes via the policies of the ultrawealthy. Basically if you like the economy the way it is, vote for McCain. Otherwise Obama is the only option whether you like him or not.

Blonde   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Yeh, Abby...not only did McCain get his $$ from marrying a rich lady, it was a rich lady he was dating while he was still married to someone else! We need better family values than that in the White House and a self made man like Barack Obama works for me.

Louis345   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Joe Kiloz not sure what you saying there buddy, buts stay on the topic.

How can you vote for someone that is out of touch of everyday American Life. We all know that democrats are the best party for spending responsibility, for creating a surplus of money not debt, and most importantly improving our education system.

You are willing to elect someone that said this: "that in the 21 century we don't invade foreign countries". We don't have a moral leg to stand on thanks to people voting in George Bush. Guess who supported the war in Iraq?

Brian   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Oh boo hoo. They're probably his wife's houses anyway. And thank God I live in a country where it is possible to earn money without the government stealing it. CNN let's hear some more about why Obama is crashing and burning in the polls.

Jamie -- Asheville, NC   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Sadly, I don't think a majority of people in this country care about things like this...the fact that McCain owns multiple houses (and can't keep track of just how many) while normal people can barely hang onto their own doesn't really *matter* because McCain is a war hero.

It's really disheartening that McCain has so many glaringly obvious character flaws, etc. that people are (I guess) willing to overlook just because he was a POW and somehow that makes him more patriotic than Obama.

Viet Vet   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Most Americans know how many homes they own or in the process of losing to foreclosures.

In Novembder, most Americans will vote according to their pocketbooks.

California Voter   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

SteveC   August 21st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Obama fails to mention that his house is worth about $1.5MM, while most homes in that part of Chicago aren't worth much more than about $200k. And who's out of touch with the American people....surely not the Ivy-educated, raised abroad, less than 2 years experience candidate running for the most important office in the land?

Senator Obama is the best you can do? How many houses McCain has or does not have...per your words: "if your like me and you've got one house" though did you forget your house is a mansion worth over a million dollars? How about those who can't even afford a small house? I like many voters have lost faith in Senator Obama. Now I know why I voted for the other candidate. I don't know who I'll vote for as president though I do know it won't be Obama and now I am stomping against him as he turns negative I turne negative. ...same old politics just different faces & names.

This is just ridiculous now; they're both multi-millionaires with expensive homes and private school kids. It's pretty disingenuous to try to compete for who is most in touch with average Americans, considering how little either of their lives is like that of regular people. So why don't they just shut up wth the stupid personal attacks and focus on proposing economic solutions?!!

The fact that they're successful is the reason you'd want them as president, so they can do for our country what they did for themselves.

The worst part about these recent attacks by Obama against McCain is McCain could turn right around and throw the same attacks back, just changing the name. If Obama attacks McCain, it really should be on something that can't also be attributed to Obama. It makes Obama look like a hypocrite and I am not really sure what kind of benefit he thinks he is getting by doing it?

Franky   August 21st, 2008 12:04 pm ET

"The Republican’s campaign continued to press their long-time charge that Obama himself is an elitist. “Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?” said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers. “Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?"

Don't worry, once he losses in the General election, he's gonna be the biggest elitist in the world! LOL!! And guess what? He won't have to cling to guns and religion!! LOL!!! Don't believe me, just ask your boy Senator McCain!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

McCain supporters never cease to amaze me. How can you listen to Obama and say he is an elitist, negative and not ready to lead. Before he was running for office the man wouldn't even fly on a private because he wanted to sit with everyday folk and hear what they had to say. If the McCain gets voted in don't be suprised when America is considered the joke around world for another 4 more years.

Cheri from VA, North and Southwest   August 21st, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Get your heads out of your hindquarters and report fair and equitably, CNN!!! I am sure that you reporters do not have 13 houses nor do you make $5 million a year and your spouses or significant others, if you have them, are probably not worth $100+ million.

Report the facts and stop sensationalizing and subliminally attacking and disparaging Barack Obama, that is not the media's job!!! Americans get enough of that from the Republican party and Fox Noise (yes Noise and NOT news!)

John Doe   August 21st, 2008 12:03 pm ET

And of course, McCain still doesn't know who's the president of Russia, can't remember how many houses he has, thinks car tires dont need to be inflated in order to get good mileage and STILL gives speeches as if he were teaching people as old as he is and stuck in a nursing home how to play Wii sports. LOL! I've said it before, I'll say it again: Obama will bury the non-native-born citizen so deep the history of the election will qualify as a dual-thesis subject on politics _and_ archaeology.

HEY.....

let's all hit Obama on the fact that he is hitting back...

Remember,,, the strategy is ... NO MATTER WHAT HE SAYS OR DOES.... "HIT" HIM ON IT!!

If he doesn't fight back.... call him weak... (and hit him harder)
If he DOES fight back... degrade his campaign of "change"

You know.... like with the troops... we were ready to go with attacks WHICHEVER way he went... (visit... attack for using as props.... DONT visit... attack for neglecting our heros).... ok.... READY.... "BREAK"

Steve   August 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I'm not sure why everyone has their underwear in a twist over what these two guys are worth. McCain married into a wealthy family.
Obama wrote a couple of books and got royalties for doing so. It's the American Dream to hit the jackpot. Why are we acting like this is a bad thing? It's a bad thing if you're a communist who believes everyone should get the same benefits, no matter where they are in society.

And by the way, a "million dollar mansion" is no big deal if you live around a big city. And believe me, it's definitely not a mansion.

susie   August 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Obama thinks there are 57 states. McCain needs to do an add on that one.

John Starnes   August 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Let's see.....it seems McCain owns TEN houses.....must be nice to lose track of that! Then again, he can't remember Shia vs. Shiite, Al Qaida vs. Iran, Czech Republic, borders of crucial countries, chimes "support our troops, I was a POW" then votes against the GI Bill for our troops coming home.....since snide remarks about arugula is the best this campaign can muster after Brittany and Hilton, it looks like raw desperation has set in. Heaven help us if McCain ends up in Bush's still-warm seat in the White House!

NotFallingInLine.org   August 21st, 2008 12:02 pm ET

No matter how you look at it, John McCain and his wife are mega rich. Neither of them has ever wanted. Even while McCain was a POW he received special treatment while his fellow POWs suffered and died. Today John McCain wants you to believe that he is looking out for your best interests. Yet, all his record has shown is that he has supported the rich and wealthy his entire government career. Also, in his book, he wrote of his single goal of becoming President of USA. All this so that he can prove to his dead father and grandfather that he can achieve a level greater than four stars; and at the expense of us the American people. If we vote John McCain into the Presidency, we WILL get what we ask for: more wars and a very large bill for our children.

Joe Kiloz seems to have found the caps and dash keys on his keyboard. Saying it louder doesn't make it true Joe.

Obama's house in Chicago had a low market price even before Rezko got involved. Obama has repeatedly said it was a stupid move on his part and has been investiagted and found innocent of any wrongdoings.

Contrast that to McCain who runs his camp with remnants of Rove's campaign management, former lobbyists (who are not going to curry favors from their former employers righ?) and a GOP smear machine that blatently misrepresents the facts (check factcheck on most of their ads).

McCain is the one out of touch. Why would he be in touch with hundreds of millions in the bank? When last did he face issues related to the common man? Besides almost faling out of school that is.

And also, if McCain calls me his "friend"' one more time,, I'm gonna vomit. Take to the rocking chair McCain and let a man run the country.

Made $4 million last year thanks to books he wrote, not thanks to inherited beer money.

There are no private beaches in Hawaii.

Rezko raised money for Republican governors and co-chaired a multimillion dollar fundraiser for George W Bush.

McKAY   August 21st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Now it seems to me that Barack's camp has wake up from slumber; fighting back as soon as you can, negative or issues ad work very very well especially those who watch tv for few minutes or hear sound bites for few seconds. Republicans 're good in doing it and they will not give it up. Nobody is talking about Dumb Bush and his misery he puts in every Americans– is all about Obama, he is this and that. Americans have short memories and 're politically dumb; they wouldn't mind voting for another idiot in office just to fulfill their ego and status quo. Obama has raised a lot money use those money wisely...don't be like Hillary who paid thousands of thousands of dollars to incompetent advisers and still lose.

Joe Green   August 21st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Bear in mind that most of McCain's money is from his wife, who is a successful businessperson in her own right.

The Republicans tried to pin the same label on Kerry, remember? He married a multi-millionaire (Theresa Heinz) and that is a bad thing?

I am disappointed in Obama for taking this low road.

And yea, being a millionaire in this country ain't no big thing anymore. There are more than a million of us and counting. Of course, that says more about the value of the dollar than anything else.

First off who did Sen McCain"s wife get the loans from to buy their
houses? Does the name Rezko come to mind? Doubt it but that is okay. Since when does it matter how many homes you have as to whether you are an elitist? I know personally 5 people who own more than one home and I don't think they are rich since the families in question both work and provide funding to pay for them. This kind of stuff is silly and I thought Sen Obama was against this type of stuff and just wanted to talk about issues. YEA RIGHT

Tony   August 21st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

This is a good line of attack for Obama. The fact is, McCain hasn't been in touch with everyday Americans, well, ever. He's been a politician since he got out of the military, and has been married to a mega-heiress for most of that time. Rich people have been doing great in this economy, so they may not see that everyone else is suffering!

can everyone here, without looking, itemize your investments? Take into account your 401k, IRAs, etc.

They're invesement properties, ffs. I can't even tell you the balance of my accounts without looking and couldn't begin to tell you where my investments are.

Why is he any different?

Vicki Webster   August 21st, 2008 11:59 am ET

Mr Obama

How many houses do you own? Please give us a break with you crooked friends. JM al the way to the white house.

Connie   August 21st, 2008 11:59 am ET

Wasn't one of our complaints about Saddam Hussein was he had several houses?I guess McSenile will have many places to vacation in if he is prez, of course that is if he can find them. Some one blogged that he would make a good prez because he knows finances since he owns seven homes. If you don't know how many you own and have to ask your staff, is just how out of touch he is on the economy. OBAMA 08

Obama EARNED his way into Harvard and EARNED his way to being the President of the Harvard Law Review.

McCain finished next to LAST in his naval academy but was able to continue on with his career because his dad was a general.

Do I want someone as President who has EARNED what they have achieved in life or do I want someone is been handed everything to them because of who their dad and wife is?

Give me Obama '08

WELL, WE KNOW OBAMA CAN COUNT TO 57 SINCE THAT'S THE NUMBER OF STATES HE THINKS WE HAVE IN THE USA!!!

Chris, NJ   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

I think Brian Rogers pretty much summed it up.
You don't accuse the other guy of being out of touch with Americans when you grew up in Hawaii, make millions of dollars, live in a mansion, take vacations paid for by taxpayers, etc.

And didn't McCain say he only owned 4 houses? perhaps obama should check up on that.

McCain 08

Puck   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Yes, Brian Rogers – Obama is ready to have that debate, you dolt.
Because, no matter how many coats of "elitist paint" your cover
Obama with, the fact remains: McCain is MORE elitist than Obama.

Chuck   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Both camps make me want to vomit. I'm ashamed that this is all the better America can do for a presidential election. What a shame.
"Decided not to vote"

Debby   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Well at least McCain didn't get his land from Rezko or hangs with people who bomb the Pentagon. I don't care if McCain owns 20 homes, condo's, boats, etc. etc. he earned them for serving our country and being in a POW camp for 5 years. Obama is so out of touch that 5 million comment was suppose to indicate this is who is very wealthy and who should be paying the highest taxes. Maybe if Obama used his brain instead of having things scripted for him he would understand who should be taxed more and who shouldn't. Small buisness owners might bring in 250 a year and if he starts taxing them how are they gong to survive or even hire on new help.

Obama doesn't have a clue about payroll taxes, workmans comp. state and federal. I have to say he is about the dumbest candidate the Dems. have had so far.

Joel in Corona   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Yawn...
How about posting a real issue?

McWar, McCoward, McPhony   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Walking around in 600. pairs of shoes, and owning 10 homes is okay. Just don't be coy about it. Come on Mr. Straight Talk–talk. Let's hear you tell people who are suffering one more time, you don't know how many homes you own. That's a wonderful sound bite for Mr. I'm With You America–NOT.

Also,
John left his wife and kids, three at the time for a Barbie Doll beer bimbo. That is the most outrageous to me. This man should not be rewarded. He didn't leave his buddies, but he sure left his wife and kids. I'd say anything he did in Vietnam is null and void. What matters is what he did when he returned home–had an affair with Cindy Lou.

Chip   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

Pretty stupid comment, but unimportant.
One thing to note: If McCain starting selling his extra homes, it would do more damage because it would increase the excess housing supply which is responsible for the decline in home equity. One thing that the rich can do to truly help the current economy... is BUY MORE HOUSES. So good, I'm glad McCain doesn't know and I hope he and Cindy don't even think about them.

Obama all the way   August 21st, 2008 11:58 am ET

This old man, he played one;
He played knick-knack on my thumb.
With a knick-knack, paddy whack,
Give a dog a bone;
This old man went rolling home..

You know the rest!!

Joe Unger, San Francisco   August 21st, 2008 11:57 am ET

So much for a positive campaign from Obama.
Yet, if we stoop to this level, Obama has a home that was worth over $1million when purchased years ago, in his shady deal with Tony Rezko. Obama himself admitted it was a "boneheaded" move but he didn't rescind it.

Oh, well, typical politics, huh? Mudslinging on both sides. No new kind of politician here, from Obama.

james   August 21st, 2008 11:57 am ET

IS OBAMA KIDDING? THIS IS A GAFF? THESE ARE HIS WIFES HOUSES.
SOMEBODY ASK OBAMA HOW MANY STATES WE HAVE? THATS MORE IMPORTANT. 57 IS THE WRONG ANSWER

FREE THINKING DEMOCRAT

Ken-Ohio   August 21st, 2008 11:57 am ET

McSame is so out of touch with the American people on so many issues...economic policy just being just the more critical challenge this country faces. Ultimately, "it's the ecomony stupid" will doom McSame.
But on another note, McSame, in response to a suggestion by a questioner at a townhall, agreed with the restoration of the military draft. I find no reference to that outrageous thought by McSame on CNN or any other website. If Obama had offered that suggestion, Headline News!

karen-phoenix   August 21st, 2008 11:56 am ET

He owns 8 houses and wears $600 shoes! The "cabin" in Sedona is one of the MOST expensive pieces of property in AZ!!! This man has NO concept of reality or what it is like to live on $30,000!!! He thinks rich is 6 miillion a year?!!!! $50,000 would be rich to me!!!! He also is sooooo living in the past and I for one do not want my grandkids drafted and in wars for ever or until this world is no more!!!! NO McBush!!

Richard, FL   August 21st, 2008 11:56 am ET

Talk about ELITIST!!!!

Marc PDX   August 21st, 2008 11:56 am ET

The Russians have invaded another country and have resumed flying strategic bombers off the Alaskan coast (not done since the cold war), Iran is working on nuclear weapons, Israel will probably attack Iran, who know what North Korea is going to do next.

And the MSM is tossing softballs for Obama to hit over how many houses McCain owns. Sheesh!

Phil in KC   August 21st, 2008 11:56 am ET

The McCain response, while aggresive, still comes off a bit weak. Basically, the only defense they had was offense. If you read the related article, though, it looks like Kaine is auditioning for VP; he's taking on that attack dog role.

k   August 21st, 2008 11:55 am ET

OK, now let's compare that to Obama's abortion response debacle...hmm...didn't think so...

Abby   August 21st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Yeah but obama got his from the sweat of his own brow. McCain married a rich lady.

Biffington, Biff   August 21st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Vic in Nashville... you were NEVER going to vote for Obama.

Christy   August 21st, 2008 11:55 am ET

Get' em' barrack. The more and more I learn about McCain, the less and less I like him as a person, let alone as a President of the US. CNN did an excellent peice in last nights "Revealed". It truely showed johnboy's real character – a cheat, a liar, and a traitor.

mollygonz   August 21st, 2008 11:55 am ET

It's about time Obama!! Go for the jugular! We have been waiting to see if you are a fighter. Paint McSame an elitist just like he "tried" to paint you a celebrity. He doesn't know what he's messing with. Get some!!

My View   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

McCain's staff couldn't even answer such a simple question. "More than four"? Why are they being evasive? Seems like am easy to define number to me. Are they afraid that John and Cindy may come off as being rich elites? Too late.................

Own Up To It John   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

At least 4 homes means he has at least nine or ten. Trust me, he knows how many homes he owns. He just didn't know how to answer that question politically. Having nine or ten homes is okay–just don't fudge and hem and haw about it. They're your homes–own it. It's the American way.

But don't you dare try to call Barack an elitist, when you are ducking and dodging a simple question such as how many homes do you own. I guess the answer won't sit well for all the Hillary voters in PA, OH, and beyond.

John McWar is a moron.

Laidetea   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

The spokesperson for McCain is a lot younger than McCain himself so it is obviously true that McCain has to surround himself with people who know more about him (McCain) than he knows of himself. That's pathetic. WE NEED A PRESIDENT THAT CAN MAKE HIS OWN SOUND DECISIONS NOT SOME YOUNGER PERSON WITH THOUGHTS OF CONQUERING AMERICA.

Down with the DNC   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

So Obama doesn't go negative? HA!

Biffington, Biff   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

THIS... compared to a guy who just paid off his student loans (in his 40s)..

JUST made his money less than 5 years ago....HIMSELF

Raised by a single mom and went to school on SCHOLARSHIP....

was once on food-stamps as a strggling single mom found her way..

yeah... THIS is the guy who is an elitist... riiiiiiight.....

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

Conservative and morals don't belong on the same stage as John McCain. McCain's admitted life history of dishonesty and deceit is ugly. Being a POW victim doesn't make it okay for him to have victimized so many women including his ex-wife Carol. You would think John mcCain of all people would have been sensitive and caring for others rather than just himself, but he wasn't.

Election Watcher   August 21st, 2008 11:54 am ET

Well, we know that Obama owns at least 1 house, because political fixer Tony Rezko helped him buy it at a fraction of market value.

Obama '08

Brian Rich   August 21st, 2008 11:53 am ET

Has anyone actually proven that Obama worries about the price of arugula? Or is this idiot just lying to make Obama sound elitist?

McCain's net worth is in the nine-figure range – totally out of touch with normal Americans. He and Romney should team up and build a newer, bigger White House where they can live with their servants. Or maybe they could build a China-esque hidden city, where only neocons can visit. McCain is used to having so many houses I would think he'd fit right in to his own personal city.

Brian

Molly   August 21st, 2008 11:53 am ET

For those of us that have actually lived in Hawaii everyone should know there are no private beaches! So again the McCain campaign is grasping at straws to make Obama look like an elitist...

To bad CNN can't do basic fact checks and call candidates out on their mistakes. Are there any good reporters left in this business?

Senator McCain should know that they own at least 10 houses, according to the media. What is he trying to hide or is he just sooooo rich until he can't remember? In a time where most people are losing their houses left and right he doesn't want it put out there because he may be the one who is the real elitist in the Presidential campaign. If he can't tell the truth about a simple question like this what else will he not know the answer too?

Bill W.   August 21st, 2008 11:52 am ET

Obama needs to make a commercial with video of McCain making that statement. The guy makes enough asinine statements like that, and people need to see them. VERY effective!

I am life long democrat voting for Mc Cain
Because Democratic Party and their presumptive nominee out of touch with Americans
1) Congress approval rate is Lower than G.W.Bush
2) From March 2008 Obama doesn’t know what he saying
3) Americans want a candidate strong and care about Americans that candidate is Hillary Clinton. Democratic party steal the nomination from her
Hillary 08 or Mc Cain 08

$500 loafers....

4 "houses"... (never answered how many "homes" as in condos)...

$100 million wifey...

family jet...

bbq's for the press...

just your AVERAGE Joe... er... JOHN.... right?

Generation X   August 21st, 2008 11:49 am ET

McCain's gaffes are numerous: he doesn't know how many houses he own; he defines rich as having $5mil; he defines Americans struggling to make ends meet as being in a mental recession; he does not support insurance companies from covering birth control pills but supports coverage for viagra ectal for erectile dysfunction; he wants to stay in Iraq for 100 or more years; he wants to auction our children's future with $10bn a month war in Iraq while Iraq has a $79bn surplus. The list goes on and on and on. What a shame that anyone with common sense will even consider voting for him.
