Reid had some tough words about McCain.
Reid had some tough words about McCain.

(CNN) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and John McCain have never exactly enjoyed a close relationship, but the Democratic leader was exceedingly blunt Wednesday in his assessment of his colleague from Arizona.

"I can't stand John McCain," Reid flatly told his hometown paper, the Las Vegas Review Journal in comments published Thursday. The Nevada Democrat also said he had recently expressed that sentiment to Democrat-turned Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, an ardent supporter of McCain who has agreed to speak at the Republican convention early next month.

"He (Lieberman) said 'I know you feel that way,'" Reid also told the paper.

The top Senate Democrat also said McCain is wrong on a host of issues and "does not have the right temperament" to be commander-in-chief.

McCain, who has long highlighted his willingness to work with Democrats across the aisle, was slightly more gracious towards Reid in an interview with Politico Wednesday detailing his pledge as president to work with congressional Democrats.

"I [will] go to see the speaker of the House and the majority leader of the Senate — I assume that that would be Sen. Reid, I hope not, but I think that’s probably the reality of this election — and I would say, 'Let’s have an agenda, let’s work together," he told the publication.

Meanwhile, when it comes to Joe Lieberman's role in the Senate next year, Reid suggested he would welcome him back to the Democratic caucus.

"All my close votes, he's always with me, whether it's the budget or energy issues," he said of Lieberman. "No matter what it is, he's always with us. He just does not vote right on Iraq. … Why would I want to throw away a good vote?"

For all those OBAMA bashers who are complaining liberals are ruining America, I would like to remind you of the current state of our country and perhaps you need to put up mirror and look at yourselves!! what this administration it has done to this great country!!!

For reals, if you want more of Bush policy then vote for McCain.

AND if its going to be another Bush regime then I am packing my bags and moving to CANADA!!!!

Enough is ENOUGH!!!

Derek in Seattle   August 21st, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Good for Harry.

Gary Chandler in Canada   August 21st, 2008 2:29 pm ET

American politics is SOOOO different from Canadian.
If a Canadian leader had wanted to throw his wife into a topless, banana eating, pickle sucking contest with fat old men in stinky clothes, his party WOULD have been scrambling to find a replacement, and his career would be over. Add to the that, 'I don't know how many houses I own.'
SOMEBODY should get McCain bragging about crossing party lines and being the bipartisan hero with the Committee they ran to hide all the POW files. WHY doesn't he want to bring this marvelous part of his resume forward. (Maybe it is the October Surprise?)
Can SOMEBODY explain what it took to be offered early release from the Cong, which his daddy turned down, not him!
He tries to committ suicide and he is hero!!!
Speaking for the real heros who were POWS of the Cong, they did not talk, so they are dead.
I AGREE 100% with Ross Perot's opinion of McCain, and he knew him better than most.

Harry Reid can't stand McCain.

Even if that was all I knew about McCain, it would be enough to get me to vote for McCain.

Vote McCain, a vote for Obama is insain!

Nova   August 21st, 2008 2:29 pm ET

I am sure Sen. Reid would work well with a president McCain. When both congress and the presidency is in the hands of the same party, bad legislation happens because there were no reason to compromise and the law were either far left or far right.

600 other men were pows in the 'hilton' of vietnam.mccain was offered early release as a gesture to his father Admiril Mccain. lt. cmdr. mccain, refused and was an instant hero to america.however,he forgets to mention, that any one of the other 599 pows, would have without question, done the exact same thing.
mccain's 'cross' story was never mentioned in any articles books reports quotes etc.,until he began his first presidential race in 1999,his "favorite author, solhenetzin, was a political prisoner in russia ,and related a very similar story in a book."i'm not calling anyone a liar, but, i think he has 'embellished his story to fit with his fav authors story",for the extra votes he may get from religious folks.is this another 'bosnia sniper- gate' issue?

I bet you that there are many that do not like Reid either. How can anyone have such an opinion, or talk about others as Reid has done, when in fact he is in no position to criticize others. What has Reid done?

Ace   August 21st, 2008 2:28 pm ET

That's a really mature comment from the Senate Majority Leader… "I can't stand McCain." Reminds me of the dumb blonds in high school.

I understand Mr. Reid because I can't stand that two-faced, lying, elitist, warmongering, prejudice, pandering, ancient neanderthal either!

WeBoDave   August 21st, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I can't stand the Republican party and John McCain's criticisms of Democrats that are more true of themselves. Elitism, celebrity, responsibility for our current energy problems, irresponsible tax policy, obstructionism toward energy indepedence, effective allocation of our military resources, unamerican, unpatriotic and racist are all accusations at least alluded to by McCain and his campaign that are more true of McCain and the leaders of his political party.

Jason   August 21st, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Why isn't the story about McCain once again not knowing anything. HE doesn't know how many houses he owns. COME ON CNN.. this man is clearly UNFIT to be the President. He is suffering some sort of mental illness. He has to be steadied by Nurse Cindy everytime he walks up and down steps or stairs.. McCain remember Czechoslovakia, now the Czech Republic.. McCain also believes Iraq and Pakistan share a border.

I hate Reid and Pelosi and others who do nothing. But McCain needs to be called out. And CNN its your job to call him out. I bet you will censor this post like you do a lot of post, not just from me, but a lot of people. SHAME on CNN.. BOO HISS HISS

McCain = World War 3. Wake Up America and sense that reality!!

I can't stand John McCain either, but I do not think that this was an appropriate comment for Reid to make. It's no wonder why this Congress can't accomplish anything. They are too busy bickering like high school students.

As a life-long democrat, I am among the millions who have been disenfranchised and ashamed of my party's conduct in this election year. Reid is just another example of the sell-outs to the young-n-hip, text-you-votes-in-today-kids, 20″ sound-bite culture. Barry "Manchurian Candidate" Obama will not be getting my vote, but then, he and his Obamabots could care less, right?

all of you, republicans, do not be ignorant, ok, let's do what McCain said "Country First", right, so Reid does not like McCain, now, has McCain put his country first all his 26 years in congress? of couse not who has done that? show me a perfect record… now what will Obama and McCain say that they will do to change that, that's a different story. For us republicans is dificult to convince the population that the Bush's administration has been wrong and bad all along, because actually we republicans had been in control of congress for 7 out of the 8 years of this admonistration. We have not benn conserative (money wise) at all!, from torture to wire tapping to have Chenney erased 10 pages of the EPA report about global warming, to the communist China free trade, big tax cuts for corporations… you name it, I mean, companies are not leaving because we do not have skill workers, they are leaving because 1- huge tax breaks from this administration, 2-cheap labor. 3- infrastructure.

How does it feel to be a symbolic leader in the most ineffective and unpopular congress since polling began?

Erhh…Mr. Reid…since Lieberman is your best buddy on everything except the war on terror–then you must also support his views on the annual multi-billion foreign aid/defense package the U.S. citizens are forced to send to Isael.

It's sad we you want to raise taxes of Americans to enable your own special interest ties.

I see you've gotten the republican talking-points, Mike from Texas. You might not like Reid, Murtha, Biden, and Pelosi, but they have never "bashed our troops." If you're referring, in some misguided way, to the surge, consider this.

The surge has helped with the violence, but it would not have worked without our government paying the Sunni militiamen $300/month each not to shoot at our troops. That's right. Your tax dollars are going to pay terrorists not to kill our troops. The military has acknowleged this as FACT. As soon as we stop paying them, what do you think is going to happen? Our troops have done everything they can and they've done it well. Now it's time to bring them home.

OBSERVING:

You are right. That was a defining moment. A moment where Obama answered the question honestly without presuming to be God like McCain who presumes he can define (as God) when life begins.

It is interesting how some on the right accuse Obama supporters for blindly following Obama as if he were a God when it is Obama who admits he is not God and McCain who presumes he is God. In his statement "at the point of conception" McCain was pandering to the evangelical audience and you know it. Now he is teasing the Republicans with a potential VP pick who is pro-choice. He'll tell the evangelicals life begins at conception to get their vote and then to get the vote of moderates and independents he just might pick a pro-choice candidate for VP. Sounds to me that while McCain presumes he is God he is in actuality acting the part of a little devil.

TerryDo-Puma-+   August 21st, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Reid, you sold the democratic party when you and your cohorts selected such a candidate such as Obama.

Everyone sees how corrupt the democratic party is with it"s selecting of a candiate instead of electing that person, how totally corrupt the primary caucuses are, how the super delegates such as yourself, Pelosi, Dean, Brazile et als, and the DNC's non-partiality during the primaries.

All of you meat heads will be voted out of office as soon as your district comes up for re-election.

And last but not least, no one cares whether or not you can't stand Senator John McCain but because of you and your parties corruption he will probably end of being the POTUS.

Unless of course, Hillary R. Clinton wins the nomination at the Denver Convention when her name is placed in Nomination in the First Roll Call and she win by a huge margin….

I think Obama should consider picking Hillary for VP

ppl should over look her negatives so Barack can be sure of the white house

TO Mike, Syracuse, NY,

You say the same thing on every post whenever someone speaks the truth about John McCain. Your first response is generally "why would anyone's (fill in name) opinion matter?" Everyone can't be lying about McCain's temperment and his inability to be an effective commander-in-chief, not to mention that he hardly has a "record" of bipartisanship, as you so incorrectly claim. He's voted with Dubya 95% of the time!! Nothing bipartisanship there! And, we won't even get started on John McCain's dentures, the lifts in his shoes to make him appear taller, the worst comb-over of anyone walking the earth (with the exception of the "Donald", in which case it's a tie), and the fact that he calls his wife Cindy disgusting names. I think he probably fractured her wrist in his anger last week and not some supporter shaking her hand, and it was probably over some negative news article about him, stating the truth that he's just a mean and deceitful clone of George Bush!!!

Doesn't Reid speak for most liberal democrats. They don't have the intestinal fortitude to create a team atmosphere and do what is right for the country as a whole. They'd rather bicker and fight amongst themselves, as our Democrat controlled Congress has done the past
two years. More concerned about diluting our tax base with give away programs to second and third generation welfare receipients.

"I can't stand John McCain," Reid flatly told his hometown paper, for once a honesty person that should know McCain by his 26 years of experience in the Senate. Reid, we understand. I would love to read your book one day.

CNN you closed to soon again………………Obama-takes-swipe-at-McCain-over-houses. “Somebody asked John McCain, 'how many houses do you have?' and he said, 'I'm not sure, I’ll have to check with my staff,'” said Obama at a Thursday morning campaign stop. “True quote! 'I'm not sure, I'll have to check with my staff.' So they asked his staff and he said, 'at least four.' 'At least four.'…………..Ask anyone that lives beneath his “rich” 3 million a year voter, not voters because 98% of us has and will never make that kind of yearly salary. When it comes to knowing how many homes we own….no thinking to do…it would be 1 house or was 1 house until foreclosure reprocessed it because of senators like McCain that voted 95% of the time with Bush policies and agenda’s. They still have many homes, millions, health care, jobs and vehicles to switch everyday with a chauffeur to drive.

NOMcBush is just wrong for America, We are no longer fools by his memory loss. How many of us can't remember how many homes, cars, land and VOTES with Bush we can't remember?

Joe Lieberman's vote IS NOT a good vote. On anything. Anytime.

That is the problem with Reid and may other old line democrats. They need to get some you know whats from somewhere. Joe Lieberman should be ignored by every democrat in the country, including those in congress. If he votes "our way" then fine. If he does not, then to hades with him.

McCain bashing by a leading senator only helps McCain.

Reid is a mature adult, why would he choose these words?
Democrats are quite pathetic.

Helen in Kansas   August 21st, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Mr. Reid's opinion on Sen. McCain just may be based on Sen. McCains negative campaigning and the lies that Sen. McCain seems to be professing when he know that they are lies.

One of the latest examples is when Pastor Rick Warren (at the beginning of their 'interview') asked Sen. McCain how the 'cone of silence' was. Sen. McCain COULD have been honest at that moment and spoke the truth. Seems small? Well these really are questions of Character.
I am more interested in hearing what Sen. McCain's solutions are for the Economy, real solutions for gas prices (it is now known that 'drill here, drill now' will NOT impact current gas prices. So Sen. McCain give us some real information not all this negative stuff.

I just watched a movie last night called "STOP LOSS". I am not sure if this movie portrayed any truth or was just a totally fictional account of how the U.S. treats it's military.

If by chance the theme of this film is factual and your government actually forces men and women back into fighting a war after they have served their agreed upon military service then all of America should be totally ashamed of their country and their Politicians.

If this how McCain managed to create his so-called surge and he was behind it then anyone who would support this type of maggot would have to be a thoughtless moron.

Reid is right about one thing–McCain's temperament.

The more I read about his anger management problems (including comments from his own Republican colleagues) the more I worry that he may have untreated PTSD.

As the Saddleback forum showed, he is obsessed with war–even questions that had nothing to do with foreign policy, he turned into answers with war.

And his empty boasts, "I know how to win wars" and "I know how to find bin Laden" are equally disturbing.

The temperament of a president is VERY important. I really worry about McCain's judgment being influenced by too much anger in the WH.

Barack Obama IS Our 44th president   August 21st, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I agree wholeheartedly with you Harry Reid. I can't stand him either – he is so negative and nasty. He is so wrong for this country. Under his administration nothing in Washington will change. Nothing of real concern to the American people will get done because he has no new ideas, no vision, no policies outside of Bush that will move us successfully forward in the 21st century. He doesn't have a health care plan, nor an education plan. He is weak , inexperienced and lacks good judgment on the economy and a whole host of issues.

It's time for the American people to get it right and NOT vote for McCain, instead vote for change. It's time for this country to turn the page and seek a new and better future for ourselves and our children. It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president !

After several months with events playing it seems Senator has demonstrated sound judgment, foresight and to lead this country in the direction that is in the best interest of the country.
Senator McCain and the Republicans have no vision have consistently demonstrated their lack of vision to lead this country.
Fundamentally Judgment trumps experience, and that is what this election should be about.
This election should be a referendum on where we the citizens want this country to go. Do we want to take the lead or be led?
If we want to lead then the clear choice is the Senator from Illinois.
If we want to be mere observes in the scheme of things then the Senator from Arizona is the clear choice".

"The top Senate Democrat also said McCain is wrong on a host of issues and 'does not have the right temperament' to be commander-in-chief."

What exactly is the "right temperament," Senator Reid? Does it involve the inclination to trash talk those with whom one disagrees?

John in Ohio   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

"All my close votes, he's always with me, whether it's the budget or energy issues," he said of Lieberman. "No matter what it is, he's always with us. He just does not vote right on Iraq. … Why would I want to throw away a good vote?"

Beeeeecause he's a Republican? Maybe? That sound like a good reason to not have him in the Democratic caucus?

Mike Foley   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

I wish Mr. Reid would look in the mirror and/or listen to some of his constant whining. If there was anybody in the Senate that people couldn't stand, Mr. Harry Reid would be at the top of the list.

Obama In the House   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

The majority of Americans agree with Harry.

anonmouys   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

no mccain

speedracer   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

Why isn't more being said about John McCain's longtime reputation for having a volcanic temper?

His own Republican collegue from Alabama said that he didn't like John McCain and it is obvious that McCain is not suited for sensitive job of being President.

ooops i did it again   August 21st, 2008 2:03 pm ET

oh come on Mike…how many times do i have to tell you. the Dems hold the Majority by 1 seat, not enough to over ride the record filibusters by the Repubs…McCain also has the worst record for Vets and woman. he is also the the record holder absentee

John McShame, Obama Is Going to Tax You & Cindy, but Not Me & 95% Americans Making < $250,000/Yr   August 21st, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Hate is such a strong word for a has been!

Mike Mundy, Houston, TX   August 21st, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Of course you will ALWAYS welcome Joe Leiberman. If not, then all it takes is for Leiberman to become a Republican and guess what? You have lost the Senate. Geez, how dumb Americans must be, Harry. Moron!

Phil Newton Murphy, Oregon   August 21st, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Me, neither!

OBAMA 08

jason, tx   August 21st, 2008 2:01 pm ET

Arkansas Undertaker   August 21st, 2008 2:01 pm ET

I LOVE Harry Reid…………He is the real Maverick! He speaks his mind and puts McCain in his place. I support Reid and his comment 100%. I feel the same way.

McCain is WRONG for America!!!!

Don   August 21st, 2008 2:00 pm ET

i'm sure he can't stand u either Reid. So its all good. Is this the new politics from Barry and his supporters?

Paris   August 21st, 2008 2:00 pm ET

And guess what the American people can’t stand you or that Pelosi character.

You went on Vacation while we paid over $4 for gas. No wonder your approval rating is at 8%.

I WILL NEVER FORGET how you call the WAR LOST for political gain.

I can’t stand you Reid.

Spencer in LA   August 21st, 2008 2:00 pm ET

Truth is McSame needs Independent Joe to win this election. There are 4 million more Dems since 2004 and 500,000 less republicans. What does that mean? McCain needs Joe to come get folks like me, registered independents. No matter what all you Dems and Repubs say, if Joe is on McSames ticket, I might just start calling him McCain, and seriously consider voting for him.

It might be an easy decision for Dems, but not for me, though I would probably still vote for Obama. I would still seriously consider a Joe/McCain ticket though.

hillybilly   August 21st, 2008 2:00 pm ET

i say ,get rid of the senator from israel.no more war!issue no.1!

Barbara - NC   August 21st, 2008 2:00 pm ET

A lot of us know how you feel Sen. Reid, most people in this country can't stand McBush either.

ooops i did it again   August 21st, 2008 1:59 pm ET

no draft…no mccain!!!!!!!!!
. McCain should be scrutinized…just like Obama has been. his character is in question, so are his ethics…john McCain has some 59 LOBBYIST running his campaign, that's not America first, John McCain gave up important Military info after 4 days, that's not putting his country before his own person, John McCain committed adultery, that's not a leader you can trust, John Mccain has lived off of the American people all of his life, owns 7 home worth 13 million, personal wealth of over 110 million, thinks being rich is making 5 million collects SS and "disability…why disability? yet he want us to believe he knows our pains…he failed to pay the taxes on his southern CA home. John McCain has the highest absent rate in the Senate, the worst record for Vets and women, supported the illegal war in Iraq, wants war with Iran and Russia, has no clue about economy, saying that "all in all we are doing better (than 8 years ago". says he knows how to "win" a war but has no record to back that claim up. John McCain is running on his war "hero" status, but he pushed legislation making it impossible for families to get info about their MIA/POWs…and still refuses to release his Military records…AND HE WANTS THE DRAFT

Steve in DC   August 21st, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Me Either Harry…me either!!!

Cindy   August 21st, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Sick & Tired of Nobama   August 21st, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Another arrogant egotistical snob… he's in the right party.

Debby   August 21st, 2008 1:58 pm ET

Hey Reid I can't stand you, Pelosi and Dean. You have never brought anything to the Dem. but a bag of sour wind like your candidate Obama.

Latina for Obama...NJ   August 21st, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I cant stand him either!!

OBAMA 08!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 21st, 2008 1:57 pm ET

The current Congress has done less than any Congress in 20 years. Why would Reid's opinion matter to anyone? McCain has a record of bipartisanship. Reid is nothing but a partisan attack dog; and one with no teeth at that.

People make no sense   August 21st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

McWar needs to explain how he was dumb enough to get caught early in his military career, and spent a long war not fighting but being held captive. Wow what a hero. No guns blazing – shoot your way out of anything – defend America. Just tortured spilling your guts against America. Through diplomatic means, and his father power he was allowed to live. It's laughable that people consider him a hero and strong on war. He spent his time in captivity during war. Is that what he plans to teach us? He was flying a plane he was too dumb to know how to fly and got shot down. Maybe if he wasn't a C student he would have been able to learn the technics to manuever out of position and not get shot down. My grandfather flew endless hours fighting in the same war and he came back a *Real American Hero*.

KYJurisDoctor   August 21st, 2008 1:56 pm ET

That's funny! OsiSpeaks.com

Stephen   August 21st, 2008 1:55 pm ET

EDW   August 21st, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Americans must love and repect liars. Look at the present administration. Their history of telling the truth is about one sentence long. Their history of lies will go on through eternity as 911 volumes of lies told by President G.W. Bush and Vice President Cheney, among many others. McCain will add on to these volumes because he has learned how to lie from the experts. It is the only way to win an election in America (not counting rigging the votes). McCain's snappy, and concise performance in the Evangelical Church last Saturday, can be credited to his knowledge of all the questions before his performance. He gained points on his carefully crafted answers, no doubt about that. The fact that his numbers immediately rose in the pols, indicates how much Americans love liars…
