While making the rounds in Virginia Thursday, Sen. Obama told reporters that he'd decided on a running mate but refused to say any more.

(CNN) - The VP choice was a difficult one for Obama, a source close to the Illinois senator tells CNN's Gloria Borger.

Watch: "I've made the selection," says Obama

Specifically Obama was "very hung up on the experience versus change,” the source said, and how his message of change may conflict with a longtime Washington insider.

The source doesn't know who Obama ultimately chose, but confirms Sens. Joe Biden and Evan Bayh, along with Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine are all in the running.

Who cares about the VP. If Hillary he better have a new cabinet post "Food Taster". If Biden he gets a Loud Mouth. If Kaine he get less experience than he has. I think he should go with Pedro Richardson and the theme can be "Votes we don't need no stinkin Votes !!"

Bill   August 22nd, 2008 7:45 am ET

I am going with Kaine & Unable* 08'

BHO is going to have big challenges in the debates (unscripted, hard questions) and he tends to ramble off-script. He needs a strong debater in a VP to overcome this weakness (as a ticket/team).

SOSO   August 22nd, 2008 1:38 am ET

What I notice more than anything is that all the VP names are men. Aren't there any women smart enough or experienced enough besides Clinton? Obama would never put a woman in as VP because he looks down on women. Just check his campaign workers and his short list for VP and you'll find very few women. Couple that with some of the comments he has made and you find a man who deep down feels that he is smarter and better than women and most men.

Mae Greener   August 21st, 2008 11:39 pm ET

If barrack realy want to win Hillary is the only VP who can guarantee this for him.. she helps him carries FLA, OHIO Michigan and pennsylvania plus is very popular where i live which is bloomington indiana.. mccain is like a freight rain picking up stream.. mccain raised 1.6 million in one day in NJ last week nt exactly a repub stonghold.. Poor Barak Obama supporters they are just not that good at math. They actually think they can win with just 52% of Hillary Clinton supporters voting for their man. It is very simple pick Hillary and if she accepts, win, or don't and lose. I am a delegate, I know hundreds of democrats that will not vote for Obama without Hillary. Obama supporters, if you wat to win, you better start pushing your guy to go for Hillary, or plan on McCain for 4 years.

Bush touted "experience" and look where he took us. This country needs change from all the crap we've been fed the past eight years.

OBAMA in 08!!!!

Mary   August 21st, 2008 11:07 pm ET

I'm so soured on Obama and his nasty supporters that it doesn't matter who he picks because I will NOT be voting for him. He's just an empty suit with rock star rhetoric that will flip-flop and say anything to get a few extra votes. Who needs that? I'm not anxious to vote for McCain, but I'm tired of seeing Obama and his fake presidential seal and all the other presumptive crap.

Geri   August 21st, 2008 11:05 pm ET

I wish we would hear more from the people of Illinois as to what they think of Obama and the job he did as a state senator and also as a US senator. We only hear from people who want to see him elected and don't know him well or only from his being a Senator. More background is needed.

Ken Villella   August 21st, 2008 11:03 pm ET

With the terrible downward spiral of our countries economy, respect in the world, a war based on complete inaccuracies when we should of kept a stronger presence in Afganistan, utility bills that have gone up 40-50% in 3 years, gasoline that has doubled in 4 years,(lets not forget Bush saying in the spring he hadnt heard gas prices was gonna spike in the summer when everyone in the country was talking about it!) How about a Vice President who had 5 MILITARY DEFERRMENTS to stay out of the army yet was SECRETARY OF DEFENSE DURING THE !ST BUSH ADMINISTRATION! Let's not foget the hugest deficit in the country's history after the Republican leadership walked into the White house with a surplus. The 1st in decades! And McCain's voting record largely mirrors support of this administrations policies. Does a house have to fall on people to realize we gotta get this leadership (if you can call it that) out of the White House and get an educated man with fresh ideas in there!
Rob from Texas was right. Obama gives in-depth thought out answers where John McCains's are as simplistic as Bush is. Unfortunatly sometimes too many people like simplistic answers because they get to hear what they want to hear.

Leroy Jenkins   August 21st, 2008 11:01 pm ET

John McCain is not a war hero. He was a coward who dropped bombs on innocent women and children. This takes zero skills.

If he was a true war hero, why was his plane shot down? Could it be because he simply isn't that smart? There's a reason he graduated 894 out of 899. Think about it....What a loser!

Rob G. Charlotte NC   August 21st, 2008 10:27 pm ET

Sad how divided and uninformed are the comments I read above. We should all take a deep breath, take with a grain of salt all the "spin" that radio and, even, the press have thrown at us, and take a very sober look at whom we think is, like it or not, the better choice to try to take our country forward in the way most Americans now understand we must go.

Personally, I am most horrified at the depth of the corruption and disrespect for the true American traditions and Constitutional beacons that have been absolutely trampled with devilish skill, right under out noses, with the Carl Roves, the "swiftboating", (which has already begun anew), by the current administration and the virtually bankrupt list of areas where the distinguished veteran has brilliantly and boldly charted new courses and disavowed, clearly, the precedents of his political party.

I'll take my chances on Obama.

Rob

Rob

Ken   August 21st, 2008 10:24 pm ET

If Obama chooses anyone other than Hillary Clinton to be his VP, he will lose to McCain, for he will be unable to beat him in November.

I am one of the Hillary Clinton supporters that will write in on the ballot Hillary's name, or will vote for McCain. I know that I will NOT be alone in doing this.

So if the Democrats want to win back the White House in November, then they better pull out all stops to get Hillary Clinton on the ticket, that is the only way Obama has a chance at becoming our next President.

Obama's attempts at hyping the vp selection to boost his polls is disingenuous.

He may get positive benefits from selecting any of the candidates, but all candidates come with negative factors also. For example, Biden cannot fit the bill of "hope and CHANGE".

Biden's solution to give $1billion to Georgia in aid does not instill confidence in his experience in foreign policy.

Obama's slip in the polls will only get worse, even after announcing the candidate. History repeats itself with Obama outspending McCain by $30M in July and nothing to show for it except a 50% drop in the lead. What a joke.

"The polls show that the novelty of a black President has worn off and Obama is just another politician (which he was all along).

For those who are oblivious, Obama will pick Evan Bayh–why?—because he can deliver Indiana—-Obama also wants Colorado and Virginia but none of his picks can deliver those states—

Finally, with Obama and McCain agreeing on beefing up the war in Afghanistan, with the Iraq war now winding down, and with the price of gasoline dropping, Americans are seeing that we just don't need Obama and the potential problems he brings (ie: much higher taxes, etc:)—-

So let's get McCain elected and get back to the good life–"

Who care what Hillary Clinton has to say. What has she actually done for New York since she has been Senator. Another thing for the records when she was First Lady she was out running for Senator in New York and she did not even live there. They were from Ark. By the way, how many homes do they have? Hillary Clinton only stood by her man because it was in the making for her to run for President in the next election. Well it happened didn't it? I still think Bill Clinton should have to pay the Government money back for all that was spent for his lying about Monica. Supposedly they did not have too much money when he left the White House but ,my oh my at the money he made on his book that he wrote and all the money he pulled in doing speaking engagements. I would never have his book in my home. Have all US citizens forgotten this? Hello Democrats.

Clinton/Kennedy '08   August 21st, 2008 8:59 pm ET

For decades this country has been mis managed by males. Hillary's message has 'stuck' because who better to know the needs of the children than a mother. Who better to defend a country than that who took an oath to love honor and cherish her husband who in the face of adversity was the last male president who ran this country with respect, prosperity and pean as his 3 montras

Well now we have one male too full of himself and the other either in cahoots with GW if you believe that crap or can't remember that 5.3M people have lost their homes and the economy is in the crapper!

With Hillary's name going on the ballot and Caroline Kennedy in the mix we not only get experience who's focus in on our children's future, we get the bonus of the 2nd spot going to historicall a brillant family in the political arena and you get 2 women who care about our children as our leaders.

Now those are the 2 people you want to not only be able to answer the phone at 3am but have the intellectual capacity to understand what the 1st important step would be 'THINK ABOUT OUR CHILDREN'

Signed – Gender Blind!

All these PUMA voters are good for is mouthing off. This has been proven by the fact that hillary is still $25 million in debt. She only rasied $2 million last month towards her debt. How come? I thought she was 18 million supporters strong? Oh yeah that's right, that's all they're good for, is complaining and stomping their feet like whiney children who didn't get thier way. If they'd take a few minutes out of their ranting sessions and write a $1- $5 check to her campaign, maybe she'd be out of debt already? You puma's do realize her mis-management of her funds has completely ruined her political career right? The funny thing is, the only comments on these blogs that I read where people are saying that they donated to hillary are usually teh Obama supporters. Weird hey? I doubt I'd ever see a PUMA donate to Obama's campaign though.

let's see McCain's and his buddy's experience ...
lying to the American public,
leading the country to a wrong war,
destroying America's foreign relations,
leaving the country in thrillions of debt,
bombing this,
bombing that ...

sure Obama doesn't have that experience.

The only way Obama can win the presidency is if uncle George Soros buys it for him, and that will never happen.

So, we can be sure that the Democratic Party ruined their opportunity to govern this great country and because of their corruption and selection of a candidate they will live to regret it.

So, get ready for President John Sydney McCain

Hillary has distanced herself from her PUMA's, where are all these throngs of people still devoted to Hillary?? At this point in time, Hillary has ceased to become a viable Senator. So.. go ahead and tout your experience... because the experience we've had so far has been bad experience.. with no new ideas to bring us out of our bad times.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't have a problem with having an experienced VP... but I'm glad we'll have someone with fresh ideas calling the shots.. and someone with experience with whom he can temper his ideas with.

Of course this fool needs someone with experience because he has none himself. It still won't help him because he will screw this country up sooooo bad if he is elected (god forbid).
HE WILL CHOOSE HILLARY CLINTON because the clown now is soooo afraid he's losing. If it's not Clinton then it will be BIDEN....who has already told the fool he doesn't have the experience and "on the job training is not offered".
Want to know what obama is going to do to this country..........just look at the major cities inthis country that are run by democrates and the poverty of each.

I think if Obama wants to win, he is going to have to pick a VP with experience. I'm all for change, BUT with everything going on in the US and the world and the fact that he is an African American (gasp) many are not comfortable with him. He also needs someone that is a good attack dog and can take on the Republicans. In my opinion, Biden fits the bill. Hillary doesn't have the experience, being first lady doesn't count!!! I will vote for Senator Obama no matter who he picks though...

Scott, Rangel proposed the draft in an effort to get the Repuglicans to admit that "the growing burden on our uniformed troops [in Iraq] is obvious, and the unfairness and absence of shared sacrifice in the population cannot be challenged." In other words, he was against the war. He did not truly WANT a draft. McCain is a war monger. If he's elected we'll be involved in Venezuela, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Russia and probably a dozen other countries. McCain would LOVE a draft!! Please check your facts!

It doesn't matter Barack. You'll be calling the shots and setting the direction.

You need someone ...

1.) you can trust & work with as a partner when you deem it appropriate.
2.) that you can delegate tasks to, and be confident that they will get completed as you want them to be completed.
3.) that can GUARANTEE you a huge state that you would not otherwise get.
4.) ready to be president if something should happen to you
5.) that mutes McCain's perceived wisdom, experience, and the superficial allure of his POW status.
6.) some that pulls white men in the south.
7.) Smart enough and yet smooth enough to show up McCain and his running mate in the debates.
8.) would hold office for a single term so that you could selet Sebellius for a 2nd term and groom her to be the 1st woman President.

The Obamaniacs here are forgetting one huge thing, the military. Obama wants to cut apart our military with huge budget cuts. He plans on cutting key modernization programs and replacements for aging vehicles and equipment. Despite what Obama thinks however we need these programs more than ever in these uncertain times. At least McCain promises to keep our military the world's finest fighting force and allow Iraq to stand on it's own.

For a man about "hope" Obama also seems like he couldn't care less about our space program. Think twice before you vote.

I also agree with Peter that the GOP has a much more difficult VP decision. Unless they pull in Colin Powell (highly unlikely) or Huckabee (impossible), no one on the GOP side offers as much to gain as Obama does by choosing either Clinton, Biden, Bayh or Kaine.

Bayh and Kaine possibly swing a dbl digit EV red state to blue, which could make the difference in another close election.

Clinton - womens vote & Hispanics (would make a difference in CO, NM, NV, FL, NH, OH). Basically, the election result would be guaranteed.

Biden - would help swing independents in NH.. maybe VA

Jack Mehoff, Orlando   August 21st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

The polls show that the novelty of a black President has worn off and Obama is just another politician (which he was all along).

For those who are oblivious, Obama will pick Evan Bayh–why?-because he can deliver Indiana--Obama also wants Colorado and Virginia but none of his picks can deliver those states-

Finally, with Obama and McCain agreeing on beefing up the war in Afghanistan, with the Iraq war now winding down, and with the price of gasoline dropping, Americans are seeing that we just don't need Obama and the potential problems he brings (ie: much higher taxes, etc:)--

So let's get McCain elected and get back to the good life–

Obama is what we call in the military a 'careerist' meaning he is has always been focused on his next job, his next promotion; not focusing on the job at hand. Consequently, in order for Obama to survive, he must select a VP that has all the qualities, capabilities, and qualifications that he lacks, and will never have.
Here is a question for all of the Obama supporters: "what is the difference between Obama and Howdy Doody?" Answer: "Nothing. They both have wooden heads, someone else is talking for them, and pulling their strings."

I watched CNN and Bill Maher thinks that Obama should pick Hillary as his running mate. The rumors of his top 3 are 3 boring white guys. He needs Hillary Clinton because he needs to show bold stand and the ruthlessness of the Clinton's on attacking the key issues. (That was Maher's words)
Obama has moved to center and changed his stand on Oil drilling, he voted YES for FISA etc. Hillary voted No on FISA protecting citizens privacy.
Hillary would bring back the movement for the Democrats.
Only 52% of Hillary's 18 million voters are behind Obama. It would be a mistake to ignore her accomplishments with getting Americans behind her. I don't know anything about those boring white guys. Hillary is a national figure.
People slam the Clinton's have a short memory or they are to young to remember what the economy was like when Bill Clinton was in office
Funny we don't hear about health care anymore.
Obama has lost his movement and that is evident with the fact he is not winning by a very large percentage after having 8 years of BUSH!!
Problem now is I wouldn't be surprised if she would say NO to the V.P. position.
GO HILLARY!!! I will write her name in…

Okay, as if the McCain camp wasn't going to bring in Rezko anyway. It won't work.

If you want to talk about character, what about the fact that he left his wife Carol and their 3 kids, to have an AFFAIR with Cindy Lou the Barbie beer bimbo.

It doesn't matter what he did or did not do in Vietnam, what matters is what he did after Vietnam. Our brave soldier, came home and cheated on his sick wife, ditched her and the 3 kids for 17 year old Cindy Lou. A rich girl who was almost half his age.

So don't go there John, because we have plenty of facts about your "failed" marriage. Or as they say in the south–your double dipping ways.

"Poppa was a rollin' stone, wherever he left his hat was his home, and when he cheated, all he left us was alone."

Mark Ferbet, Grain Valley, Missouri   August 21st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Most of our Presidents had little to no experience when they reached the White House. That experience means nothing once you get there... nothing will prepare anyone for that job.

Look at Bush... he was Governor of Texas, yet he still managed to botch things up... and if you look at others in the past, you will see that many of them had never even held major office when they became President.

Experience is important in some things... but a strong, intelligent, well spoken, well thought, and highly educated leader with a strong support system (cabinet) is more important than a leader who has had decades of Washington experience in politics.

For the good of this Country... that is what we need.

Franky   August 21st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Me personally, I want something new guys. I don't want experience!! Is our time to take over the world!! Phelps is doing it, Nadal is doing it, Lebron James is doing it, Kyle Bush is doing it, etc. I'm telling you, this is our time...

But on the other hand, if he gets someone with experience, that'll help him out also. It could be a nice upgrade you could say. But do I know who is he gonna pick?? To be honest, I have no idea...
