Obama vetted Chet Edwards for the VP spot.
Obama vetted Chet Edwards for the VP spot.

(CNN) - Texas Rep. Chet Edwards confirms to CNN Barack Obama's presidential campaign has vetted him for the No. 2. spot on the Democratic presidential ticket.

Watch: Rep. Chet Edwards on VP process

Edwards also told CNN Obama has not spoken to him in recent days about his VP choice.

You know what? If he picks Chet, then it'll be "Obama-Edwards" and uneducated voters will think he picked "John Edwards" and link him to the scandal and he will lose!!!

Ben   August 22nd, 2008 1:34 pm ET

Chet Edwards? Shades of 1960. A charismatic young senator from the north needs an older southern senator to help deliver.

As for the Obama can't win without Clinton... most democrat hardliners will come around because they'll realize 8 years of Bush will be replayed in 4 years of McCain. The moderates though will shy away because of Clinton's confrontational approach. She's the future Teddy Kennedy.

Rich   August 22nd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

It would be tricky to have Hillary as VP for many reasons. The one I'd be most concerned about would be the Republicans bringing up all her attacks and hiding behind the line that even his own VP thinks those things about him.

If Obama could somehow navigate that, part of me is starting to hope she is the VP. Didn't he say recently that he wants someone who would butt heads with him?

Scott   August 22nd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

This VP thing has become an even worse joke than it was 2 months ago. Obama ISN"T ready. He cannot see clearly. Twenty Million Voters have already made it clear who needs to be on that ticket and if he chooses ANYONE else than Clinton–we can conclude that Michelle just isn't ready to run the governing either.

SONGBIRD MCCAIN,

I was agreeing with everything you said until you took a swipe at his willingness to "talk to the enemy" while being tortured. I'm not voting for McCain, and I'm a strong Obama supporter, but what you just said was disgusting. I doubt you'd hold up for a day undergoing what he did.

Catherine   August 22nd, 2008 1:33 pm ET

Look at the end of the day Obama needs Clinton supporters and Clinton needs Obama supporters. I admit things have gotten a little out of hand but let's get real…IT'S POLITICS.

Seriously, both Obama and Clinton supporters basically want the same thing for this country, which is PRACTICALLY THE OPPOSITE OF MCCAIN!!!

Come on….let's move on and fight together to get the White House back!!!

Scott, West Chester, OH   August 22nd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Obama is in a box. To make up for his lightweight credentials, he needs an experienced heavyweight. But any heavyweight will make his qualifications look all the more puny and will damage his image as the candidate of change. Are we getting serious buyers remorse yet?

ROLL CALL FOR HILLARY!! IT'S NOT TOO LATE!

Trever   August 22nd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

This is taking too long and I have to say that it is making me really not like Obama. Stop being coy. Stop being annoying. Start attacking McCain's record. Start talking about issues and a plan for our country. So far, I would say this campaign is being run worse than both Gore's and Kerry's. It's being run by amatuers and lead by an amatuer leader...

If this is the pick, Obama has some serious 'splaining to do.

Waiting this long has overplayed his hand already. A surprise pick/risk would only double the resentment and question marks.

John in Ohio   August 22nd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I'd bet 20 bucks that every single person who posts "No Hillary = No vote for Obama!" is a paid staffer working for Mark Penn in the basement of Burson-Marsteller's headquarters in New York.

Goo job Hillary, pick a chief strategist who is the CEO of the PR firm that has represented Blackwater USA, Countrywide, numerous South American juntas, the Saudi government, and of course Union Carbide after the Bhopal disaster. That's the kind of judgment I don't want to see in a President or a Vice President or even a Senator. Luckily I'm not from New York so the last one is moot.

Jon   August 22nd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

WIth the amount of hype this is getting, unless Obama picks Clinton, or some other major name like that, this is going to go down as one of the biggest anti-climaxes in American political history. No one really cares about the VP choice. When the name comes out, people will go, "Oh? OK." And that'll be it. Biden, Bayh, Edwards...just names. Unless Obama picks Clinton, or Gore, or someone of that stature, this anticipation can only hurt Obama, and make him look very manipulative.

Cathy   August 22nd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

A lot of people here commenting no Hillary no democrat vote. What am I supposed to tell my son about you when he gets drafted? What am I supposed to tell the person waiting around to die because they don't have health insurance?

I am sorry you feel betrayed that Clinton did not win the nomination. But you can't blame that on Obama. Mark Penn is the reason Clinton lost. Howard Wolfson is the reason Clinton lost.

Do you really think Clinton will be better off in any way if Obama loses? Because if Obama loses and Clinton runs again in 2012, we will remember all of you.

To Joshua,

Welcome to the dark side! The Republicans will gladly absorb all of the defectors, and consequently win the election. The Democratic base is too diversified to ever create a coalition that will please everyone, causing frequent splintering and defecting. It doesn't matter who Obama picks, at least one faction of the Democratic party will feign indignation and stalk off in a self-righteous huff. Interestingly, this could be perhaps the best year ever for a third party to push forward a popular, viable candidate. Now THAT would be interesting.

Say "no" to the status quo, and NObama!

Steve   August 22nd, 2008 1:27 pm ET

The best strategic choice is Clinton, as she's possibly the one person, in either party, who can bring in a large number of votes as a VP.

The best practical choices (in terms of the quality of advice they will give Obama) are Joe Biden, Sam Nunn or Chris Dodd.

I think the best overall choice would have been Mark Warner, but I don't think he's planning to be anyone's second fiddle when he can be #1 in 8 years after winning a Senate seat a reelection.

I believe Obama's handling of this VP suspense show reflects his egotism and arrogance. Doe she think he could just disregard Hillary and her 18 million supporters, many of which whill not vote for him? Any choice other than Hillary is a HUGE mistake and will cost us the election. Obama and his supporters and the DNc expect Hillary to be gracious and her supporters just be quiet and comply with the coronation. No unity without Hillary on the ticket. For the good of the party, the nation, the world, do the right thing, Mr. Obama.

obama drama   August 22nd, 2008 1:23 pm ET

It doesn't matter to me who he will pick. I will not vote him. My vote is going to McCain. Obama should have picked Hillary from the end of the Dem primary in an effort to reunite the 2. Now all he has done is blame Hillary for letting the 2 sides steam.

If Obama loses this election, he can blame his wife, Michelle. It is her hatred/jealousy of Hillary Clinton that has stopped Obama from selecting Hillary as VP. HRC is the obvious choice if the Dems want to guarantee a victory. The other VP choices are weak and will not generate any excitement or votes. Obama, look to history. Your hero, JFK, put his enemy-LBJ-on the ticket because he knew it would guarantee him a victory. He was right....like today, it was close, but JFK won. THE DREAM TICKET would win.

Interesting choice. But I'm not sure about his experience level – particularly in international affairs. A lot of people were rooting for an Obama/Edwards ticket. They may get it – but with a different Edwards. And, then again, maybe it's a ploy to help him with his re-election campaign.
BTW – why is Jay Rockefeller speaking at the convention on VP night?

CHET EDWARDS IS THE GUY HANDPICKED BY PELOSI IF YOU'VE SEEN HER INTERVIEWS. SAY NO MORE. OBAMA'S TOAST IF HE PICKS EDWARDS.

Otis   August 22nd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I still think it will be Clair McCaskill. What a laugh if it is...The media is fawning over Bayh, Biden, etc.

Let the story play itself out already.

And as for Hillary...he's never going to pick her. Clinton's hubby will undermine the campaign royally so she can win it for herself in 2012.

Besides...do you really need someone who will make our deficit worse than it is? She can't even pay off her campaign debt!!

Get real, people!

TNJed   August 22nd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Funny how most libs make decisions emotionally. Reading this blog allows one to reach this conclusion. Go ahead vote your feelings. Sad bunch. *Study Econ 101 an understand global trade and finance and you "might think" differently. Rs can fall short on these realities as well, but at least they won't turn the country into a train wreck. Now some blogger will "feel" that GWB has already created a train wreck. Answer: start reading again at the *

We already knew that   August 22nd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

This is not a decision that Obama is making by himself. He has pollsters and campaign staff vetting and testing every move. Whatever choice he makes is going to be the best possible choice. I can understand the Hillary love; I hated her during the primary, but if she can get Obama into the White House, I can understand where people are coming from. However, I would not want someone I did not like or trust as the VP of my company, would you?

jack   August 22nd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Those of you whom would vote for Mcsane because Hillary is not on the ticket are more stupid than those I thought!!

carolflowery   August 22nd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

To Songbird: You need to get a grip and take a pill. I personnally dont like anyone bashing someone who was willing to die for our country, and to be honest, Im sick of thinking of us doing this period. Yes, by all means, lets pick someone who wrote a book about dreams of our fathers, who was abandoned not by one father but two, Im glad for Obama that he's faired much better by his own wife and children, I will give him that, however, this surly has had a deep and heavy impact on his views. One would think that he would have written a book about his mother, her dreams, what were they? Thoughts to ponder

Jano1234   August 22nd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Who is this man? Oh, yes, he probably has less experience than Obama if that is possible. You know, all you people who act like we democrats who will not support Obama do not have this right. It is still a free country!!! RIGHT??????? Well, maybe not.

Paulette in L.A. by way of D'Ville   August 22nd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Please, not Hillary, she is not to be trusted. Britney Spears would be a better choice than Hillary, at lease you would know what's really on her mind. Please not Chet.

kathie ann   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

pick Hillary please, then we all can vote for our chosen one.

Re: Hillary still deeply in debt. Why don't the 18 million people who voted for Hillary each send her a check for $1.50. That would cover all her debt and more. I should think if she really had the support for 18 million voters, the debt would have been covered along ago. OK, clinter voters – ante up!

Doug R.   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

I heard McGrandpa's VP choice will be Mitt Romney...

bodine, flushing   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Obama does not have any experience whatsoever to be the president of this great nations of ours. He just wants to satisfy his inflated ego – he wants to make history. Have you ever seen this guy under pressure as far as changing his mind about decisions made a week or months before? One would think that he's a split personality. He's not ready yet to be in the white house. May be another 12 years!

MCAIN SAYS "NOUN, VERB, POW"

Hello!!!   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

So Obama's half brother,, George, age 26, born to Barrack's father, has been found in Kenya and interviewed by Italy's Vanity Fair....he lives on a dollar a month, in a shack, has seen friends murdered in his violent community where he states "the police don't arrest you, they just shoot you.", and has a newspaper picture of Barrack, a calendar of beautiful beaches of the world, and poster of italian soccer players on his shack's walls. Barack visited him 2 years ago.
Maybe Barack could have included his half brother on the trip to Hawaii?????? I hear they have nice beaches that George would have loved.

CNN care to comment?

Nice.

Nothing against congressman Edwards, buth with
the current John Edwards scandel does he really
want Obama / Edwards on the campaign signs, I
just don't buy that one right now.

SC Indy   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

WHO? Like I could trust HIM to run the country if necessary? If that's a a sample of Obama's judgment – we are ALL deep in trouble!

Already we have an example of his total inexperience, as exemplified by his choosing Caroline Kennedy – of all people! – to help him find a VP.

Duh! Where's HER experience? She was 4 years old when her father died, and has NEVER been in politics! Where's her qualifications???? Instead of BRAINS, she brings the "BLING."

Dave from Gainesville   August 22nd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

It's not Chet Edwards - the Chet Edwards people are stroking themselves with this. I'm sure he was never seriously considered.

Megan from San Diego   August 22nd, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Joshua...and all other PUMA people

You are a major fool to vote for McCain if Hillary is not Obama's VP choice. You obviously don't care one bit about the issues that Hillary cares about or you would never consider voting for a republican.

Shaik   August 22nd, 2008 1:15 pm ET

All the responses to Joshua are right on.....if you vote for McSame, that means you have NO RESPECT for your candidate Hillary...you don't support her positions, her values....Obama is *our* nominee...vote for him in November or stay at home. Your "protest" is meaningless and childish!

len2052   August 22nd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

The only one fracturing the Dem. party is Obama and his koolade drinkers!!

Dave   August 22nd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Obama's not going with a guy named Edwards. Too many people would mistake him for John Edwards and think "Obama's veep is that cheating-on-his-sick-wife guy!" and it'd be ballot-box poison.

Speaking of ballot box poison, it also won't be Hillary, since she's the least-electable Democrat in the field, and always has been.

Gary of El Centro, Ca   August 22nd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

Matt   August 22nd, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Oh please, its not chet!

Reading the tea leaves on why it will be Hillary for Obama and Jindal for Mccain.

On Obama's pick. Why would Obama offer such a large chunk of time to Hillary and Bill at the convention considering the obvious drift with her supporters and his? Why would Obama agree to put Hillary's name in the roll call considering the drift among their supporters? Why is it that Obama is sounding a lot like Hillary these days? Answer? none of these questions are problems if Hillary is the ultimate VP choice. And so I am certain that Hillary is the choice and the convention is the last and final attempt of unity

On Mccain's pick. Why would Mccain schedule Jindal to follow the VP nom and risk upstaging the vp nominee? why is it that Jindal has been the only vp prospect to be so firm on his denial on the pick? why is it that Mccain and Jindal's stand on corruption, energy and education so aligned? why is it that we have a long list of moderate and independent speakers listed for the convention...shouldn't Mccain cater to his base? Well, none of these things are that strange if Jindal is the choice. Mccain can afford to throw a long moderate party at the convention as long as he's got Jindal as the VP. Conservative will dance the moderate dance and sing the moderate song all night long as long as a true conservation-faith based believer like Jindal is the ultimate vp choice.

I'm all for a Mccain Jindal ticket. I think these two men compliment one another and will be a fabulous partnership in the whitehouse.

We love Nancy   August 22nd, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Chet Edwards was recommended by Nancy Pelosi.

Hillary Clinton's so-called "feminist" supporters are hypocrites because they are always making vicious comments about Nancy Pelosi, our nation's first female speaker.

Pelosi didn't even endorse during the primaries, but they were mad at her for he belief that the nomination rules should actually be followed.

We love you, Nancy- you would have made a good President yourself!

ginchinchili   August 22nd, 2008 1:13 pm ET

At this point I hope Obama chooses anyone but Joe Biden only because I like Biden a lot and think the Democrats made an historic mistake by not making him the nominee, and I'll be truly conflicted since Obama is the worst choice they could have made. I am leaning toward voting for McCain because at least he has the necessary qualifications to be president, but I might write in Biden's name. That will obviously be complicated if Obama chooses him as his running mate.

What in heaven's name were the Democrats thinking by choosing the rookie Obama at a time when our country needs an experienced steady hand to steer us back on course? The only track record he has of note is that of obtaining the goals of his personal ambitions. That doesn't impress me. Otherwise, he's done nothing except talk, and talk is cheap. At least McCain has proven that he is not afraid to stand up to the Washington powers even when it's against his own political interersts, something Obama hasn't demonstrated at all. It also bothers me that Obama is so intent on distancing himself from his white heritage and his "typical white woman" grandmother. This guy's a cheap shot and would be more at home selling cars, or snake oil.

If you're for real, you need to get over it. As much as others accuse Obama supporters of cult like behavior, they need look no further than those loose cannon Hillary deadenders for a textbook case of cult hero worship.

These people would much rather sacrifice their principles and flip this nation a big middle finger all because their candidate lost.

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   August 22nd, 2008 1:11 pm ET

CNN says Chet Edwards........right?....Obama should beware that little is known by the American voter about him. Chet Edwards becomes the second uncertainty in the minds of the voters. Not very wise trying to have the voters resolve two "unknowns" in the political formula......mathematically two unknowns in a formula makes it impossible to resolve.

Finally the governor from Kansas and Bill Richardson.

ANYONE BUT Hilary!

ladymary   August 22nd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

well Joshua, I guess we will cancell each other out as I will not vote for a ticket with a Clinton anywhere near it.

NO Hill No Obama-What?   August 22nd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Ok Joshua and the PUMAs- I understand that you would like your voice heard, but to switch parties is completely unreasonable. If you supported Hillary, then Obama or Nader would be the most reasonable vote. TO vote for McCain means let's have a repeat of the last 7 years, The only reason the country survived is because it was healthy coming into the Bush/Cheney years. Look at us now and tell me who you honestly believe can fix it between McCain/Barr/Obama/Nader. Inquiring minds want to know.

richard - Minneapolis   August 22nd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I continue to ask it because I am continuously amazed... WHO in his right mind could see John McCain as the alternative for Hillary Clinton? I can only conclude that those who say they'll vote for him if Hillary isn't the VP (SHE blew the presidency!) are voting for the person, not the issues. NO WAY could it be for the issues! Then, if it's for the person, is it because of race, or gender 'cause the only thing Hillary and John share is race – Their policies are polar opposites. If it's about issues, then there is no choice but Obama.

People, Hillary people, get a clue. A McCain vote is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Four more years of George W. Bush will be your punishment!

TC   August 22nd, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Joshua, go ahead cast your vote for McCain. I hope you are as rich as McCain because otherwise over the next 4 years you probably will lose your job and house if McCain gets elected. I can't understand why you people would even consider voting for McCain, I guess Amercia did not learn anything from letting George W have two terms to destroy the country. I voting for Hillary but I am not that bitter that I would be stupid enough to cast a vote for McCain if Obama does not pick Hillary for his running mate. Just remember this, no matter whether it is Obama or McCain in the white house, Hillary will be okay. Now unless you are rich, you will not be better off with McCain in the white house. Don't let your angry or bitterness make you vote for someone who will be bad for the country. Vote smart!

Jay   August 22nd, 2008 1:08 pm ET

All of you Hillary backers, please let go of your dissapointment and think of this country's future. To vote for McCain because Hillary is not on the ticket is simply ignorant.

Who the HECK is Chet Edwards?

No, Obama does NOT need Clinton. In fact, she would be a huge liability.

Her fracturing of the party and now jeopardizing an election that should have been sewn up by the Dems has made her the most hated woman in America.

I want change from the horror of the last 8 years as much as anyone, but if a Clinton is anywhere on the ticket, I'm voting McCain!

Jordan - San Marcos TX   August 22nd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

He was my hometown congressman growing up. He had a lot of credibility on military issues (Fort Hood) but I don't think he would be the best VP choice at this point. If he runs for and wins Hutchinson senate seat when she resigns in a couple of years to run for Governor then he will be in a better position to be a potential VP.

Lillian   August 22nd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I agree with Joshua. I'm not someone who believes the women need to be on the ticket simply because they're women...I believe it because she is the rightful candidate for the position. At this point both Obama and McCain have really disappointed me with how they've run their campaigns...looking back I seriously believe that Hillary was the only one to run a good campaign and was knowledgeable and smart on ALL of the issues. It's simply too bad everyone wanted to target her and rip her apart. She deserves (and I don't mean that in a crowned way, I mean it in a she's proven herself way) at least number 2.

Hawk, Texas   August 22nd, 2008 1:05 pm ET

As a life long texan and having lived in chets distric he is very popular there. but i don't think he has the nation wide recognition to be v.p. Obama needs Hillary or Biden. i hope he is smart enough to know this.

Good, we don't need people like you in the party anyhow.

Bebee   August 22nd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Although I'm voting for Obama more and more I think he won't win. People keep using the whole inexperience arguement to vote for McCain. Eventhough, a republican president has drug down our economy and standing in the world. I think it's just a way to cover up nativism and racism. I guess the saying is true... The USA doesn't always get the best president but we always get the one we deserve!

Jordan - San Marcos TX   August 22nd, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Joshua, for every person who wouldn't vote for Obama if he picks Hillary there are two or three that wouldn't vote for any ticket with Hillary on it.

Go help doom our country to another 4+ years of GOP destruction if that's what it takes to get your angst, and the adolescent angst of most "PUMA" types out.

As a lifelong Texas Democrat, I think Chet Edwards is perhaps the WORST choice to consider for Obama's VP nominee. He's a major blue-dog Dem and anti-gay. This choice would alienate untold numbers of Democrats and independents.
