From
Obama has yet to name his VP candidate.
Obama has yet to name his VP candidate.

(CNN) – Eager VP-watchers waiting for the text message announcement of Barack Obama’s choice of running mate have gotten their answer: It’s Hillary Clinton. And Tim Kaine. And Kathleen Sebelius.

Since declaring the Democratic vice presidential pick would first be announced over e-mail and text message, several hoax announcements of the Illinois senator's choice have circulated, purporting to be from the Obama campaign.

The latest came in e-mail Friday morning that hit the inboxes of many White House reporters, carrying the subject, "My Vice President."

The e-mail, from the address obama08campaign@aol.com, was purportedly from Barack Obama and read, "I said you would be the first to know, and you are — I have selected Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine as my running mate!”

No word on when the real e-mail will be sent.

It's interesting that you are commenting here on a blog. If you think it's so stupid then why do you care enough to keep checking the ticker? Chill out. No one asked your permission about announcing via a text message. It is not the campaign that is making this a big deal. It is the media feeding the beast (web surfers like you).

Who cares about the losing VP Candidate? Does any sane person believe that Barack Obama will be elected President?

Forget the polls…people will continue to vote on racial lines…ie. >90% African Americans vote for Obama….the white vote won't be much different.

It's definitely Chet Edwards. You see, it was going to be John Edwards, but then the story about his mistress came out, so Obama had to pick someone else. But, he's already had thousands of stickers and banners printed that say "Obama-Edwards," so he has to dig up another Edwards…

The Obama campaign should have known that something like this would happen. I agree that he should have said when he will announce. This makes him look ridiculous. Obama should run his campaign the way he had been running it when he was ahead of the game and not try to play games. The campaign is just not as good at it as the Rove/McCain team. They are going to rain in his parade in Denver too.

Mikel   August 22nd, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Half the people commenting think Obama is the one that sent out the messages……. I fear for our country. There are so many idiots. CNN knows this and is chipping away at Obama with their weirdly worded headlines (seriously, look at them sometimes, they are skewed to make mccain look better). Even worse, they have Glenn Beck subtly steering away independent support by being "down to earth" and tricking people. Conservatives have really made me sick. I guess at the rallies they'll be chanting "4 more years!" again… look at how that turned out…

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   August 22nd, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I love that so many people lose sleep over the announcement. I also find it quite interesting that being told that the decision has been made means everyone should know who the VP is going to be immediately. Let me clue you in, it's not going to be anyone posting here so maybe relax.

I honestly think the majority of people chomping at the bit are just looking for something new to focus their trolling on. As soon as the VP is announced everyone can take a deep breath and move on to the next silly issue.

Maybe we will find out that Obama or McCain has a peanut allergy and reflect on the possibility that they aren't in touch with the majority of the population that can eat peanuts.

A:

Jame   August 22nd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Hate to break it to Obama.

But the people in VA don't like Gov. Tim Kaine.
All he does is raise taxes and send it to Transportation projects that never get finished.

Not to mention his delightful cutting of the Education Budget.

I most likely going to vote for Obama; but if he has Tim Kaine as his running mate, I am voting for McCain.

Raf   August 22nd, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I don't know if I want to vote for him or anyone. Now with these guessing games. You have to wait, even though I have made my decision; because I said so. Lets postpone this announcment. Sounds like a parent or a lawyer, not a future president.
A real exeuctive does not have time to wait, if he wants to be the executive leader of the nation he needs to act like one.

Ben - Portland, Or   August 22nd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

And since you all seem to lack the ability to read between the lines, I'll spell it out for you:

Patty   August 22nd, 2008 4:18 pm ET

Gee to read some of these blogs you would think email is something new - let alone notifying people that way of who is the pick for VP. This is a circus - what a joke.

RSP   August 22nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Playing coy with his choice is an ego move for Obama. The media has him so convinced he is "The One", that he truly believes that we wait anxiously for anything that comes out of his mouth. He really believes he's got everyone fooled, and he's enjoying his celebrity. The media and his supporters who adore him have created this! It's insane!

Anne   August 22nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

NOBAMA   August 22nd, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Oh my god, this whole VP thing is an absolute joke! But that's the way Obama has been treating this whole election. He's treating this whole thing like some high school gossip.

He could have ended all this speculation over the past two weeks if he did what McCain has done. Tell the public, in advance, the day you plan on announcing your choice of VP. That way the media would not be outside his house or Bidens or whomever elses all day today. I'm getting annoyed by Obama's self interest in this campaign and am beginning to feel like it's all about him. I thought the rumors of him being arrogant and cocky were just that but after this performance I think he might be just those things afterall.

Have you bashers actually READ the article above? The fake messages are not frmo Obama playing games, they are pranks. I personally think the text thing was a wonderful idea, and a great way to reward his supporters for being there for him. Reminds of when Michael Jordan came back from retirement and sent a fax to ESPN that simply said "I'm back." Why should the media be the first to know everything; Especially as negatively as they try to portray Obama.

Why all this hateful stuff directed at Obama? This is no big deal — the media is doing or will do the same with McCain and he has pretty much been as secretive as BO. Plus, as far as "playing games" goes, McCain is the one timing his announcement to distract from Democratic Convention news blitz.
If you don't want to vote for Obama, then don't. Why all the hate? And of course, these fake Clintonistas fool no one — no real Democrat would ever vote for McCain.

I wish these candidates would wait till the convention like they used to before Clinton and Bush… Anyway, Hillary is the only shortlister (other than Caroline Kennedy) who has a Secret Service detail in attendance. The VP nominee, once notified, always has Secret Service in attendance from the moment they are told. Find who has the Secret Service detail at their house and you'll find out who the VP is on the short list. If it's Hillary or Caroline, then you won't notice any difference in their security situation since it's already in place.

If Obama would grow up and quit playing "I've Got a Secret" and just make the stupid announcement, then no one would have to worry about "fake announcements". But no, he thinks he's cute & cool by playing his silly childish guessing game.

Let me tell you, if it's Chet Edwards from Texas, than I can officially declare Obama brain dead. If he thinks Chet Edwards is going to garner him all the Texas electoral votes, he's living in a dreamland. Nobody outside Edwards' district has a clue who he is— and let's face it, Texas is not exactly a blue state. Besides, hasn't America had enough of a 'Texan in the White House'?? We didn't exactly make ourselves proud with the nitwit that's been up there the last 8 years. I'm a 5th generation Texan, I can say that. :-)

Liz   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I think this is becoming pathetic now. Obama and his campaign people are acting very immature. Time to grow up!!! This shows that he is not ready to be a serious candidate who should be elected president. Does he think that we are in kindergarden? Please grow up or shut up.

KenB, MI   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Gail AL.   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

E-mailing his V.P. choice is a bad idea, whatever were they thinking. Goes to show you what kind of judgement he has. If Hillary is not on the ticket MCcain will beat him. For the domocrates, all roads to the whitehouse are through the Clinton's. He's not got the judgement, or expericence, to do the job. Hillary's a fighter, she can get it done, to bad the party threw her under the bus, serves them right to get beat. I'll vote for MCcain.

Dennis Philadelphia   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

BLOOMBERG it is!!!!!!

OBAMA/BLOOMBERG 08!!!!

Marie   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

People ask yourself the question, who is drumming this beat, Obama or the media? He clearly said he would tell people via e-mail and/or text message when he is ready to announce. So, what's the problem? Whomever he chooses is alright with me.

Elly   August 22nd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

its likely the low down republicans sending the hoaxes out!!
I hope its someone like hillary or Biden
last night on larry kings home page on the poll
hillary got 57%
the rest got 3% and biden got 17%
So alot of people are for Hillary and next Biden

Roberta   August 22nd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Is Obama running for President of the United States, or President of the student council? It's hard to tell with his juvenile and extremely unpresidential behavior. I hope it's President of the student council. I would hate to think that such an infantile JUNIOR senator would be allowed anywhere near the White House.

JIM CO   August 22nd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Poor news media nobodys told them yet. The tabloid cnn and fox are crying the blues because they may have to work this weekend to get the news second hand. The Democrats unlike the little Rebublicans can keep a secret for party unity. GO OBAMA GO!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope the ELITE John is having a great time this weekend. Lets see how many days off he gets when he gets further behind.

Marc PDX   August 22nd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

My bet is that Obama's first choice is Kaine. I'm not sure Kaine wants the job though. Second choice, my guess is Biden, who is interested in the job. So I think it'll be Biden.

I don't think it has any chance of being Hillary. Hillary (and Bill) scares Obama too much. He'd be upstaged in Washington by the Clintons, who have lots of connections to politicians and key supporters. Obama really doesn't. So he'd be at a disadvantage and I think he knows this very well. So no Hillary. Heck, Obama didn't even help her retire her debt as he promised.

Biden.

old boy   August 22nd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

This guy is SO in love with himself there can only be ONE VP ticket.
Obama picks himself.

Obama/Obama is the democratic Ticket.

LOL at this joker

Barbara - NC   August 22nd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Come on people - anyone that thinks this is grade school or high school, lean back, have a martini (or whatever), get your blood pressure off the ceiling and just relax. Yelling and griping will not make it happen. Threatening to switch your vote won't make it happen.

Grow up !!

Ralph   August 22nd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Is there evidence that the text actually came from Obama?

This has childish right wing prank written all over it.

WOW….just got my email……It's Joe Biden….awesome…..YES

LaToya, TN   August 22nd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

It doesn't matter how long it takes Obama to announce his running mate . . . we shouldn't be the judges of it. We should actually grow up and get a life and stop allowing the media to dictate our lives and decision making process. Either you support him or you don't . . . there's no gray areas.

Beth   August 22nd, 2008 4:05 pm ET

IT BETTER BE HILLARY.

It's getting pretty old at this point. Just announce it and get it over wtih. Makes me like him even less.

Angel   August 22nd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

@ Vegas, Bill from Florida, Election Watcher, Toot, and others…

The fake-out texts and emails aren't originating from Obama's campaign. Quit trying to twist the information in order to make it reflect poorly on him.

Rudy NYC   August 22nd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

"Over the Hill"

Trevor Guerlain   August 22nd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Matt   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

He needs to hurry up and announce his running mate before the evening news in order for this to be effective. Most Americans do not watch the news on the weekends - especially not this weekend because of the olympics and the closing ceremonies of the olympics. He should've send the message out shortly after noon…

Greg Burdett   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I can't seriously believe that people are criticizing Obama for generating all the media attention. I agree with John McCain, that the "24 hour cable news monster" is to blame for this sort of thing. Is Obama inviting the media to camp outside his house? Maybe Obama has a few other things to do aside from being concerned about whether the announcement will fit in with everybodies personal schedule.

Silence Dogood   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

This is preview of his presidiency. Without a strong leader with a clear message, who will be pulling the strings?

For Bush, it was Cheney. Who will pull Obama's strings? Right now we see it is pranksters and the media, but someday the game is over. I don't want someone to play the President. Again, that is the way a celebritiy looks at life.

Keep playing around with people and they will see you for who you are.

Independent   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

This is really starting to piss me off…and should piss off other voters as well. If he knows who his VP is, shouldn't he tell the voters asap instead of playing these stupid games. He's obviously notifying us by text to rub McCain's technological short-comings in his face, but in the end, this is just making Obama look immature and attention-hungry.

Mike   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I love that Obama is holding us in suspense!

My theory is that he's waiting until the end of the day so Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly and the rest can't trash the VP pick on their shows.

Anonymous   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I heard on local NPR station if you type obamanelson into browser it directs you to obama website - which it does. not sure if that's a hoax too — or just more nothing..

Joe in NJ   August 22nd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

I got the official email!

It's Dan Quayle!

C   August 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

And why do you all figure it's the Republicans doing this? I'm thinking it's the Democrats trying to keep the suspense going & the benefit is that the Republicans will get the blame. Let him make his announcement in his own time because that's what's going to happen anyway! The media has turned this whole election into a circus! And it sure didn't help that Hillary (& others) started campaigning 2 years ago!

Steve   August 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I am a lifelong Democrat and I will most likely vote for Obama in November (I did vote for Clinton in my state's primary). I would NEVER vote for McCain or any other Republican, unless maybe if Millicent Fenwick was brought back from the dead. I could possibly vote for Nadar or just stay home this time. But when all is said and done I'll vote for Obama. But, I'm finding so much about the Obama campaign to be gimmicky and annoying, including this whole VP waiting game leading to the most awaited text message in American history. Enough already, Senator Obama! Just pick someone and get on with the campaign. Oh, and stop pandering to the religious right. They are either going to vote Republican or stay home. THEY WILL NOT VOTE DEMOCRATIC! You only risk alienating potential real voters by shoving your Christian faith down all our throats.

Olivia   August 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Deb Sastre   August 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Well, nobody will believe it when it really is sent.
Creating more doubt will just frustrate everbody. It already has frustrated the US relay teams which could not even hold onto the batons because all of the attention was on a VP pick back home instead of racing and cheering for the Gold at the Olympics. I don't really care who he goes with, it will be harder if he does not pick Hillary, she is the only certain way that Obama wins.

Rick from Portland   August 22nd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I haven't got any texts, fake or real, so I question the legitimacy of this story. He is doing this his way, if you don't like it, don't buy into the hype and pay attention. And as for the bitter Hillary fan who signed off Hillary 012, if you want to see this country MAKE IT to 2012, you should choke down your pride and vote for Obama. He wasn't necessarily my first choice, but he won, he is our nominee, and I support him. I would have done the same for Hillary btw. How could you be for Hillary, and think the country would be better off under McCain? Tell the truth, its because he's black isn't it? Closet Racist!

karen-phoenix   August 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I am 64 and have watched and voted republican all my life! NO MORE! This is the MOST exciting election in my lifetime and the young people in this country are beginning to really care because their future depends on Obama getting in. THis is great!!!! Can't wait to watch tomorrow in Springfield. Go Obama who ever you pick wil be wonderful!!!! If Hillary would have backed down after Super Tue she would probably be VP.

Phil   August 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

So how many McCain points did you naysayers get for copying and pasting the McCain talking points into these comment areas today?

Charlotte   August 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I'm sure he thinks the build up will measure up. It will most likely be a major let down as he himself has been..

Bailey   August 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

The Clinton's are REALLY poor sports, really sore losers. The ridiculous "Democratice Insider" statements shoved into the media today, with the DNC convention right around the corner, are at best, a the very essence the work of Bill and Hill. So glad they are yesterdays DNC news. It is a shame that they each get a night to speak because no matter what they say, they are NEVER genuine is giving support to another. They are, Hill and Bill all about themselves, forever. Thank god they are out.

Mark from Naperville, IL   August 22nd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Andrew   August 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Um, not to expect equal vulturing, but doesn't McCain need to make a VP announcement as well? Where's all the hand-wringing about that?

Joe- Michigan   August 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

CORRECTION: The people voting for McCain are either rich, on his payroll, or just don't have good sense!

Gail AL.   August 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

It doesn't matter who he puts on the ticket,he can't beat MCcain. Even if he were to put Hillary on the ticket, I would say too little too late. I'm voting for MCcain.

facts are facts   August 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

It shouldn't matter who is chosen as Obama's running mate he should be a shoe-in unless the intellectual level in America is lower than John McCains'! After supposedly not knowing how many houses he owns his level of intelligence wouldn't be much higher than what you would expect to see in a bag of hammers.

In all fairness though it could be McCain was just lying and really could count to 7 even though he was a failure in militaty college.

In the long run though it really doesn't matter how you analyze it anyone who would vote for McCain would have to be on the same intellectual level or below and that my friends is a fact!!!!

Rudy NYC   August 22nd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Obvious Error   August 22nd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

In trying to appeal to The Next Generation, Obama looks like a guy trying to dress like his teenager. It's hard to say which is the biggest group of dorks: the Obama Campaign who thought this would be a good idea - or the press who lap it up.

Obama 08 12

Joe- Michigan   August 22nd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I can't wait until all of this nonsense is over. Just get to the point, and elect Obama, so we can get George Bush and John McCain away from the White House. If McCain is elected, there is no doubt that we will be involved in World War III within a year! He's a WAR MONGER, PERIOD! And if you think the economy and health care are in bad shape now, just wait. John McCain is an economic MEGA DISASTER waiting to happen! OBAMA 08!!! The people voting for him are either rich, or don't have good sense!

TC   August 22nd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Honestly, if this guy isn't smart enough to pick Hillary Clinton as his VP then he doesn't deserve to win. Hillary is the only way he's going to end up being President. None of the others — Biden, Bayh, Kaine — will carry him. Honestly, is his campaign manager really that dumb?

I'm not voting for Obama and even I can see the forest through the trees. "Tool" is right.

Rudy NYC   August 22nd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Great.

Somebody just hit the most of the media, the White House, and who knows who else with an e-mail virus.

We know McCain didn't open it up, though. Thank goodness for being computer illiterate.

Andy   August 22nd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Not quite as bad as having a fake for a President for the last 8 years.

Wanda   August 22nd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

This is so exciting. We are going with a bang into the Democratic National Convention. We are on top and we're staying on top. No more politics and Washington mess as usual. New man in town that will get the job done and done right. And when we come out of the convention next Thursday, there will "no stopping us now". Obama/Biden 08, 12 or Obama/Powell 08, 12 I will be watching all next week, every night. When the following week comes, I certainly won't be watching the boring Republicans at all.

Got 35 cents - go call someone who cares!

With a 2 percent difference, it's the top spot that people should be focused on, not the #2 slot.

However with an INEXPERIENCED self proclaimed leader of the Democratic party with zippidoo da experience, we're all wasting time praying that Obama has at least the horse sense to pick someone who doesn' have to take a world wind plane ride Internationally to be recognized.

Does he pick someone who can possibly turn a red state for the last 44 yrs purple or blue..oh yeah, they're worth 26 'whole' delegates..wow..OR focus on someone who already has Ohio, Pennsylvania and tha certified vote in Florida all wrapped up so he can focus on the issues? YA THINK

Okon   August 22nd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

People always say race does not matter in American politics, even the press says this…………… its a FAT lie. Race matters alot. If race doesnt matter let Obama pick Collins Powel as VP, even though Americans like and respect Powel but two black men in white house…………. he will fail in landslide. Race matter alot. Obama should pic a very influencial white VP.

to everybody writing a retort to the initial story, or lack thereof. If you want to be taken seriously, then use spell check. I can't and won't take anybody seriously if they do not know how to speak the very language that is one of the building blocks to our culture, and our society.

John from White Plains, NY   August 22nd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

All these idiots in here (like Vegas, Bill and Mario) thinking that this is some sort of a "game"….every VP announcement has been this way, for decades! It has always been a waiting game. The reason there is much suspense and hype around Obama's pick is because he is such a unique candidate….first time ever in US history! Nobody cares who McSame picks - just another grandpa like him who favors Bush lame policies.
Grow up, boys!

Who cares? This guy is a tool and so immature. All he had to do was tell the media the day that he would announce his choice for VP and that would've ended all this hype. But no, Obama needs all the attention. So pathetic. Is this what it's going to be like if he becomes President? Everything will have to be dramatized and sensationalized to fit his ego.

Jesse From PA   August 22nd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Bill from Florida,

It doesn't say that Barack's campaign sent it, it said people pretending to be him did. This is the problem with over the top conservatives, your education has not allowed you to be able to read a full story before forming a conclusion. Slow down a minute, take a breath, and read for once. If you get a migraine stop and relax, and try again. We Democrats have learned to deal with headaches, we've had a huge one since January 20th, 2000.

Niky Kaur   August 22nd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

I don't agree that Obama is doing this for media attention. He probably has a few things to take care of before he makes the announcement. It's the media thats causing too much hype about it. Let him take his own time… it's his decision!

We MUST elect OBAMA   August 22nd, 2008 3:52 pm ET
