Obama has already made his decision, say sources.

(CNN) – Sen. Barack Obama called some people on his short-list for the vice presidential slot Thursday night to tell them he had not selected them as running mate, a highly placed Democratic party source told CNN.

The source did not say which people got the call.

Obama has told some other potential running mates over the last few weeks that he would not be choosing them.

The only reason people are making a big stink about it is because they are wondering if he's going to pick Clinton, that's it. Everyone is kind of "will he or won't he" right now, once again, it all revolves around her. This whole primary was about her, this convention is all about her and I will be SOOO glad once he picks his VP (NOT CLINTON) and the convention is over so I don't have to hear about her for a long, long time. Relief can't come soon enough…

Leta   August 22nd, 2008 11:40 am ET

After my experience with Bill Clinton and not knowing the actual person behind the Name Hillary and then not knowing that their Al Gore was Addison State Banks, Texas' Al, I will never EVER vote for any President with out knowing who is the VP running mate and what their plans are for this country in the event they have to step in to the Presidency…NEVER…Hillary would have had Bill killed with Vince Foster. Al Gore would have made Hillary VP when he stepped in…You need to show me the person and let them speak long before the conventions…Hillary should have never been able to influence Bill's choice for VP…..Hillary had Bill coming through the front door and Al entering from the rear……

California Democrat   August 22nd, 2008 11:38 am ET

Obama's really been playing coy and cute with the whole VP thing. Everyday, some "leak" or statement to the press, just so he can hog the media spotlight. Someone should tell him that we're gagging on hearing a new "twist" on the same old topic every single day. Who will be Obama's VP? Yuck! Just give us a break already, name whoever it is, and start talking up your platform and ideas (if you can).

Bill, Blue Carolina   August 22nd, 2008 11:36 am ET

The only two short-listers without scheduled speeches at the Convention are Tim Kaine and Wes Clark.

Obama is showing with this that he truly is a celebrity. Here's media…let me tantalize you with my short list of VPs who will not be chosen.

I've seen enough. Announce your decision already.

Is this the way you'll make decisions that matter to America when you're elected?

I can see it now: CNN: Breaking Story: Obama hints at decision to lower gas prices. Email sent with subject line "How to lower gas prices" and in the body of that e-mail?

…just kidding…

Bill, Blue Carolina   August 22nd, 2008 11:33 am ET

I really hope he's chosen Clark. Wes should have got the nod in 2004, but apparently voters were clueless.

What does obama stand for?….nothing he has flip-flopped like no other in the past 3 months and at every turn where it was politically expedient. How can people supposedly educated vote for him? Education does equate with intelligence and common-sense thats how. This Chicago con man has these poor kids locked away in the ivory tower existence of college life(basically extended but looser apron strings) protected from the real world and he has them so bamboozled its sad. I can't wait until a few years from now when they
grow up, mature, gain a little lifes experience (common sense) and wake up saying "OMG how stupid was I? "

JohnBoy   August 22nd, 2008 11:26 am ET

McCain will start a DRAFT, what a joke. The house and senate is controled by the Democrats for now, will they make a draft bill the law?

How is their approval rating going? 8% Going to be a lot of losers soon. So sad for you Democrats.

Thank God we have had a great president for the past 8 years, thanks President Bush.

Hope that president McCain will be as good as Bush.

What is so great in picking up the VP. For me VP is nothing. Barack himself has no qualification to be our president so why should he depend on VP. All journalists are after barack for this announcement and on the top he says he made a decision but he does not want to tell us now. Who is he? Obama will pick the right person and win…. hey folks I have few questions for McSame:
1) Did he or did he not father that little black girl as Bush team reported in 2000? (YES)
2) Does he know how many houses does he have? (NO)
3) Did he lie to Cindy about his age; and got engage to her prior to devorcing his first wife? (YES)
4) Does he deserve to be President because he was a POW? (NO)
5) Did he say he will start the draft back up? (YES)
6) Do he have a terrible temper?(YES)

Yes i answered the questions for you but you can look them up for your self…. McSame shall not be our President as I do not want to see WWIII

I like McCain better than Obama and Clinton, but with a Obama/Clinton ticket, I would have to vote for it. The only way Obama gets any sort of bump or momentum is if he picks Clinton. Here is what is amazing to me: If you are not voting for Obambi, then you must be a racist. As an African American woman, let's be clear, the problem is that Obama has only been in congress 149 days and those of us who have serious concerns with that are not racist but pragmatic. Therefore his VP needs to be someone who 1) Understands and has shown skill in the legislative process (like actually having sponsored a bill and getting it based and don't give me the Ethics bill thing); Knows how to get down and dirty when it comes to twisting their party's arms for votes; and finally, can stand up and tell it to him like it is. HRC can do all of those things.

When 40% of your party says you are not our choice. That is a problem no matter how you slice it.

Hoping for better with Obama   August 22nd, 2008 10:44 am ET

Bitter midwesterner: how can you possibly believe McCain is a leader? Leader of what? He wants to put nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain, NV, drill off our own coastlines and wilderness, and continue skating on energy policy with the same ol' oil and nukes. Where's the leadership in that?
Where's the leadership in a man who votes down money for wounded vets – over and over? Where's the leadership in a man who can't remember the difference between Sunni, Shia and Al Quaeda? Do you want him to lead your sons and daughters right into another draft so he can chase Osama to the gates of hell? Wake up, Bitterman – and be careful what you ask for.

Ray   August 22nd, 2008 10:43 am ET

To the "If Hillary or Else…." Crowd,

During the primary Hillary had the opportunity to maintain a civil campaign, but instead she decided on the "Kitchen Sink" strategy because that's the only option she had if she were to catch Obama. In the process she ruined her chances of him picking her as a VP in the future. That's the risk she took. She made her bed earlier this year and now it's time for her to sleep in it.

If it's so many of you loyal Hillary supporters would follow her to the gates of hell, then why won't you help her with her campaign debt. Actions speak louder than blogs and, well, i guess you aren't willing to put your money where your mouth is.

Will somebody please challenge John McCain on his experience claim. This guy has been in congress for 28 years, so what major decisions has he made? Invade Iraq, do not talk to our enemies, voted against giving a raise to our military, where was he with the decaying Walter Reed hospital and his great care for our military, voted against a minimum pay raise for minimum wage workers. Is this what makes this man experienced and electable to be president, then the American people should wake up or on November 5 we will find see that no change has occured in the White House and war will replace the economy as our major worry!

It won't be Hillary.

Look at her July fundraising numbers. Even with her loyal PUMAs mounting campaigns to retire her debt (and their leaders Will Bower and Darragh Murphy going on news programs and claiming they had raised up to $10 Million for Hillary) she only took in a little over $1 Million for the entire month.

Her support has evaporated, and many of her voters were Limbaugh stooges messing with the Democratic primary process.

Obama needs a winner on his team. Someone who can actually raise money and turn out voters.

That's not Hillary.

Obama really needs a running mate who can draw in a boatload of votes now, because he's waning big time. His "charisma" only got him so far, and now it's crunch time. People have finally started to see him for who he really is. The more I watch & listen to him, the more he reminds me of George W. Bush— nice looking, personable, somewhat full of himself, but absolutely no substance whatsoever.

It would be hard to imagine that he would choose Clinton, so much baggage goes along with her. Bill would become VP Jr., Hillary would endeavor to make sure all the media spotlight goes to her, All Hillary All the Time.

I am amazed that anyone would support her candidacy. She cares about nothing or no one but herself and would do or say anything to get what she wants.

John McCain is crossing the line every time he uses POW to try and get elected.

I cannot now nor will never stand this back biting senator, Mr. Reid. The only one worse is Obama. Obama is risky and Reid doesn't understand heartland of the Mid West issues. He is stuck in a state of "legal prostitution, gambling and abortions." Yes that is what Harry Reid is all about in his state of Nevada or should we say sinstate.

McWar wanted to go war with Iraq and went as far as saying "It'll be relatively easy and we'll be greeted as liberator” President Obama opposed it from the very beginning.
McWar and his republican cronny wanted to stay in Iraq for “100 years”, Obama has said that with the right strategy, we can be out of country and refocus our effort in hunting the real terrorists in 18 months from the time he takes office… now the whole world, including the Iraq government thinks that makes sense.

And I ask….who has the judgment to lead??? Wake up America it’s time to take our country back.

Better not HILLARY. She and her egotistical husband BILL will try to overshadow and elbow arm Obama. Unfortunately he may need her to win due to her fickle 18 million supporters who keep insisting they will write her name on to the ballot, but are unable to put their money where there mouth is. $1 each would retire her debt!! Talk about empty protesting…..

I don't know Jo-Ann. I would rule out Hillary. I mean if Obama doesnt pick Hil, then he just might risk alienating all of Hillary's soul sisters who voted for her during the primaries, and if history is any precursor to the future, it is going to be the women's vote that decide this election.

Bill Clinton won in 96 thanks to the Soccer moms, and Bush in 04 with help from the Evangelical vote, but most importantly because of the Security Moms who were just uncomfortable with John Kerry and his Iraq stance.
____________________________________________________
Correction…Bill Clinton won thanks to the African American vote….BOTH times….the absence of that vote is in part, the reason why Hillary lost.
It's going to be the NEW voters and the independents that decide this election.

To anyone worried about the 5′ wide strip of yard Obama bought from Tony Rezko, do me a favor. Look up Donald Diamond. Read about how McCain worked backroom deals to get Diamond acres and acres of land. This isn't even in the same ballpark of inpropriety let alone the same game. read about KEATING FIVE. let's talk about real criminals. McCain was the only senator in the Keating Five scandal DIRECTLY linked to land investments. The other senator had no direct ties to Keating. Only McCain, because he and his wife invested tons into land deals with Keating's Lincoln Savings & Loan (a company that cost US Taxpayers something like 2 Billion dollars to bail out). Donald Diamond. Keating Five. Vicki Iseman. The list goes on and on and on and on and on… McCain = Bush 3rd Term = More War = Economic Abyss

ronnie in ct   August 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

Hillary for VP…else, vote for Bob Barr.

irish   August 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

If Obama does not pick Hillary Clinton, he should probably kiss the White house good bye. If he picks Hillary he will have it locked up.
Reason being, that Hillary, no matter how much you don't like her has alot of support in the American people. You can't discount 18 million voters. If Obama doesn't do it, John McCain will by picking Sarah palin, She knows how to play in the boys club and has cleaned house more then once in goverment. She is unbelievable!! . So, if he really wants to be the ,President, he knows what he needs to do to get there. The question is will he do it? My estimation he probably won't. So say hello to President John McCain.

Denise   August 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

I don't believe that any of these anti-Hillary posters are actually Democrats or Obama supporters. Anyone who really wants him to win knows that having her on the ticket would be a death blow to the Republicans.

Let's hope that death blow comes today.

Joe   August 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

Seriously, stop pretending Obama needs Hillary to win. She's an incredibly self-centered and divisive politician, and she brings nothing special to the table that he couldn't find elsewhere.

Moreover, she voted for the Iraq war and still won't own up to her terrible mistake- she didn't even READ the security report. It's time we started getting rid of that kind of politician.

S.M   August 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

Why do most Clinton supporters feel that Obama needs Hillary to win the election? You choose a VP that will help you and the American people, not because the Clinton supporters are trying to run this election. I would vote for a Republican President if they stood for the less fortunate, but I don't see anyone who falls into this category. Oh, yeah, and if the Hillary supporters vote for McCain and he runs this country into the ground; don't complain to Obama and his supporters because you had your nominee.

John in Ohio   August 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

This is true. The question for me is, will having a Clinton as the VP pick energize more Clinton-supporter votes for Obama then it will energize anti-Clinton votes for McCain? The Republicans right now are having a terrible time just getting the disparate Republican faction to come together behind McCain. Potential VP Hillary would solve that problem for McCain real quick, the moderate Republicans, fundy Christians, and neocons would all unite to keep Barack out of the White House and to keep Hillary from returning.

So here's my questions when it comes to Hillary as VP pick:
1. Will she really bring that many supporters who wouldn't otherwise be voting for Obama?
2. As it is now, McCain has to be careful who he picks as VP so that he doesn't lose the support of any of the three major Republican party factions. If Hillary is the VP choice for Obama, won't that energize the Republican base and unify it behind McCain?
3. Aside from who will and who won't vote for her, what does Hillary Clinton actually bring to the table as a VP?

Hillary Lover   August 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

If he doesn't name Hillary, I am going to put my head in the oven and then bury myself alive. I won't know what to do with myself. I won't be able to hog the forums anymore with my whining, and I won't really, honestly be able to vote for John McCain because he is a misogynist who uses the c word to talk to his wife and will turn back Roe v Wade with his supreme court picks. I'm really gonna be in bind. Of course, I'll keep whining that I'm gonna vote for McCain, and fill these boards with pathetic, immature squeals, because I have no life.

How about picking 3 Dems that HAVE succeded in this country. How about some positiveness at least one time from this party???

Another grumpy old white woman for Obama   August 22nd, 2008 10:19 am ET

If we want a Democratic President, all of us are going to have to give up any personal prejudices when it comes to VP. The VP only has as much power as the President allows them until and unless they are called on to substitute for the elected President. Hopefully never.
I personally will have to hold my nose if Hillary is selected but I will vote for Obama come hell (Hill) or high water. We all must bite our personal bullets on this one.
Our country and our futures are at stake. Remember that a no vote or a write in vote is a vote for corruption, war and financial disaster for the majority of us.

I see the suffering from policy that just does not work, skyrocketing prices for everything, corruption is out of control, our image internationally is destroyed, jobs being shipped overseas, and cheap labor being imported, our military is stretched thin when every rouge nation is testing the fire, our infrastructure is falling apart, illegal drugs are filling our cities, education is off the charts, foreclosures, healthcare, Katrina, Rita, and taking care of the rich while the rest of the country falls through the cracks, just does not seem worth me playing political games.

God forbid BHO be the POTUS, then America should brace for the inevitable unknown future. Don't blame the previous US presidents then if more US job outsourcing and retrenchments, higher gasoline prizes, dramatic surge of housing foreclosures, higher taxes, an inevitable war with foreign rogue states and an unknown future. Even if you BHO voter's will complain to your BHO, still BHO won't listen. Why? BHO had even sat on a church for some 20 odd years "listening" the anti-american hate-mongering sermon of a pastor who married BHO and baptized BHO's children but in which BHO claimed he did not hear anything at all. And for the first time in my adult american life, the under BHO's government will in encourage not singing the star-and-spangled banner, prosecution if you wear a US flag-pin, and worst the US will be run finally by the muslims. Wow, so many things to mention. Will, it's up to you but it's not yet too late.

It is like when Hollywood hypes up a movie for weeks and people don't realize that the movie is bad until after they have paid their money to see it when it is too late. You have to see through the hype that the media and Obama have put around him and see the empty suit celebrity he is. Do not be fooled!

"As much as I hate to admit it – Clinton seems like a smart choice."

It's terrible but true, isn't it?

Clinton is not the smart choice for anyone who thinks and has a memory of the 90's. In the primaries, Obama did not touch on any anti Clinton feelings as he is a loyal democrat. The repubs will be out in force within hours of a Clinton Veep choice with ads on the following subjects. (Whitewater, Monica, Rose Law Firm, Vince Foster, and Hillarycare) They are salivating!. Just look at anything Pat Buchanan says on MSNBC. . .he cant even keep a straight face when boosting for Hillary as Veep. If he's smart it will be Hillary!!!!! If not, with his low polling numbers right now, she'll take it at the convention. He should be at least 15% ahead of McCain right now and he's not. Let's face facts. If he doesn't get Hillary on the ticket he's not going to win!!!

TC   August 22nd, 2008 10:10 am ET

Hillary is not a smart choice for VP so I hope one of the calls Barack made last night was to let her know she is not his pick. Obama can win with Hillary if people would use good judgement and stop letting other people think for them and learn to look past the color of a person's skin. Think about your future and the future of your children and their children. Vote for Obama in November and let's get this country back on track or Vote for McCain and watch more people lose their jobs and homes because John and Cindy will not let you live in one of their many homes.

Rache from Bowie   August 22nd, 2008 10:10 am ET

a Bitter mid westerner who loves guns and God   August 22nd, 2008 10:10 am ET

Is Obama for real or not? Is he a Muslim or not? Is he inexperienced or not? Did he get a sweetheart deal from Rezko or not? Is he afraid f Putin or not? Will he ask for Hillary or Biden or neither? Unfortunately in this world of ours, where there is smoke there is fire. We live in a dangerous world.

So some of the above may or may not be true, but on the other side of the coin some or all may be true.

So in my humble opinion, Obama is a risky candidate and do we want
to gamble on our country's future with a questionable leader? or do we want a proven leader.?

Why take the risk or the gamble when we have a leader in John McCain, a man, who will protect our country and our values. No gamble with John McCain.

OBAMA HAS CHOSEN A MAN WITH EXPERIENCE AS HE SAID, HE STRUGGLED IN DECIDING ON HIS CHOICE. CANNOT BLAME HIM.
HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOMINEE AND HE IS ENTITLED TO MAKE HIS CHOICE. JOE BIDEN HAS THAT MUCH EXPERIENCE,
JOE BIDEN IS A FIVE TERM SENATOR FROM DELAWARE, CHAIRS THE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE..
I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT OBAMA HAS PUT THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE.. HE NEEDS TO BE ELECTED FIRST BEFORE HE NEEDED A VP WITH FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE.
AFTER ELECTION, HE HAS ANY NUMBER OF FOREIGN POLICY EXPERTS , MANY OF WHICH ARE QUITE FAMILIAR TO AMERICANS.
NOW OF COURSE OBAMA'S ELECTION CHANCES ARE GOING TO BE TOUGH WITHOUT HILLARY CLINTON AND BILL CLINTON AND THEIR NUMBERS AND CONTRIBUTIONS.. HISTORICALLY, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THAT MUCH MORE HISTORIC WITH HILLARY AS THE VP AND WOULD HAVE ADDED THAT MUCH MORE POWER TO THE TICKET , SO MUCH SO THAT EVERY PUNDIT AROUND THE COUNTRY HAD DUBBED THE TICKET THE "DREAM TICKET". BUT PRIDE AND ARROGANCE HAS TAKEN OVER THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE. HE PUT HIMSELF ON A SLIPPERY SLOPE
AND HIS NUMBERS ARE NOW SLIPPING SINCE THE SADDLEBACK FORUM I ORANGE COUNTY.

Whoever the candidate is I wish him and Obama the best of luck. And here’s the reason why:

The people in this country puzzle me sometimes. I mean really confusing. In the 2000 election, no one in their right mind can deny that GW and his brother Jeb, literally stole a presidential election right in front of our eyes. And not only that, but to my amazement there were people who applauded it, were actually proud of it. That is absolutely amazing to me. Sometimes I wonder if we are a nation of idiots. Then this nation turned right around and put a dishonest , unintelligent man right back into the Oval office. Real intelligent, NOT.

Now 7 1/2 years later we all, except the privileged few, are in serious financial straights. We are embroiled in a war that we were deceived into thinking was a just cause. We now know it was all based on lies. We are paying through the nose just to drive our cars. We are losing our jobs and homes at a alarming rate. It truly is a sad state of affairs. A 500 million dollar deficit, it's exactly what we get…..

What we need to be doing instead, is pulling our self-serving heads out of our butts and start using sound logic.

Wake up America, stop the madness. Stop letting your prejudices and bigotry cloud sound judgment. McCain can't remember from one day to the next what comes out of his mouth. Instead of making valuable use out of his time, he is totally consumed with what Obama is doing. His platform is the standard Republic fare, fear, prejudice and the hope that the American people will stay in their mindless funk…

Yes, I'm voting for Obama and whoever if Vice Presidential candidate is. I don't care what color he is. He can be purple for all I care. He is at least exhibiting a willingness to push forward, rather than rely on ill-conceived, out-dated, non-effective leadership like GW and which John McCain is displaying with his deceptive and lying personal attacks. Attacks that have no basis in fact or reality. It shows a definite lack of character, what a loser.

Man, these PUMA idiots sound like broken records. Hillary's campaign failed because she was incapable of following one strategy, she couldn't budget her campaign, she was too negative with Obama and because she couldn't keep her husband's mouth shut. So shut up and deal with it, PUMAs (by the way that is the dumbest name anyone has ever come up with, ever).

arrogance or common sense?   August 22nd, 2008 10:03 am ET

Obama had better swallow his extreme arrogance and pick the only candidate that can be a game changer. Is that Joe Biden who has been in the senate since Obama was 11..no, Evan Byah, a nice guy but as boring as a log in a swamp…no, is it the unknow governor of kansas, what do you think, is it Tim Kaine or Virginia, you have to be known to be a game changer……there is only one person who can change the game for Obama and anyone with a brain knows who that is.

Maybe Rev. Wright , Ayers or that man that helped him buy his home for a bargain at the time the housing market was HOT.

Tom in Delaware   August 22nd, 2008 10:01 am ET

The whole reason he's hyping it up this much is because it's not going to be Hillary. That way the whole weekend will be spent by MSM slathering over who it is rather than who it isn't, before Days 1 & 2 of the convention, which are already all about the Clintons.

Strategically this inevitable but still a mistake when it comes to winning the election; Obama couldn't pick the Clintons because everybody knows 'three's a crowd'…not enough room in the White House for all those people and their egos too.

Because Hillary was the best chance to draw in the independent voters who will WIN this election, it is now merely academic going into the Fall.

In the end, by not picking Hillary, or her actually being the nomonee, John Mc____ (fill in blank with your favorite childish put-down here) will be our next President.

You're Welcome.

Why do pro-choice women always speak in terms that imply they speak for all women. Please note pro-choicers, there is a sizable percentage of U.S. women who are pro-life! Pro-life candidates are not a slap in the face to all women. In fact, a majority of people (men and women) are pro-life in this country. The democratic party is catching on and has a pro-life speaker at its convention this year. That at least is the opening of a dialogue – good for the democratic party!

Ted,

Actually, the latest count on McCain's home ownership tally was "at least seven". It's no wonder he can't keep track.

Then again, he did invent the Iraq-Afghanistan border, so it would appear that keeping track of much of anything is not one of his strong points.

Ok. I am getting really tired of hearing about the people that are going to be in charge of this great big country not picking a running mate. If they can not make this decision maybe we need to find two new canidates to run for President for the most powerful country in the world. Come guys are you men or little boys? Lets get on with selecting someone. This is getting ridiculous.

All I know from watching Senator Obama's decline in the polls is: He needs Hillary Clinton as his running mate! – She is the only one who can save him from losing with her supporters united behind her. According to his "qualifications" for his VP, Senator Clinton fits the bill precisely.
I am a diehard Democrat who has never and will never vote Republican but all I can say is that if Senator Obama is not smart enough to choose Senator Clinton as his 2nd in Command, hw does not have either my or my family's vote here in Oregon.
No, I am not a PUMA nor will I vote for John McCain. – I just will not vote for anyone at all.

Stay tuned, folks!   August 22nd, 2008 9:44 am ET

Ohio,Florida,Pennsylvania and Michigan. Remember those 4.
Hillary can really help him there, and probably bring him wins in all 4. Joe Biden and Evan Bayh cannot. Lets face it, Hillary did get more votes than Obama, its only fair to offer her the spot. Imagine if it was reversed the Obama followers would be sreaming and demanding Obama be placed on the ticket.

CNN, you are not Fox News and I do NOT think you will do anything malicious or evil on purpose but this type of news may sicken some undecided voters and turn them away from Obama. VP news or coverage ten times is fine, even 100 is fine, even 1000 is fine but this has become tooooo much. Just the title, Obama calls veep-runners up is so not cool and turn offish. I really like you and know your intentions unlike Fox News are always good… that's the only reason I am even writing this.

morgan   August 22nd, 2008 9:43 am ET

I feel bad for whomever he chooses. The Republicans are really only getting started. Whomever it is will be tied to losing in a landslide. Lots of Democrats wanted to vote for John McCain in 2000 over Al Gore but McCain lost out to Bush. Those Dems will go for McCain over Obama even if Hillary is VP… VP for her is just an insult. Obama and the Dems can lie all they want about John McCAin but Dems that aren't first time voters and not brainwashed by KOS and company KNOW BETTER!

Hillary or Biden.

Oh and Obama, I graduated from MIT/Harvard. Your argument style and use of language is definitely Cambridge, MA. You have to get rid of that for now. Folk understand short, direct, emotional answers, not the intellectual stuff that we do in Cambridge, where you are taught to argue points, supply supporting information, and to remain unemotional. This style works with the intellects, but Joe Blue Collar has no idea what you are talking about. Simplify the language and get emotional. No, not too emotional because then you will be labeled the "angry black man". Be careful, no one said this was going to be easy.

He says the only way he goes democrat is if Hillary is on the ticket. I think there are a lot of these folks out there and if Obama expects to win there needs to be strategy change and fast.

Dr. Stoner   August 22nd, 2008 9:40 am ET

I've been undecided about whom to vote for over a year, even more so over the past month. After reading and article about Michelle Obama and David Axelrod and their relation with U.Chicago Med. Ctr., I am convinced at how much the Obama's are infact a fraud. In the article on MSNBC web page, a Washington Post investigation into the Obama's and Axelrod, are infact talking of helping the poor, but infact are racking in alot of money in the process. The corralation with Baracks Senatoral career is also now suspect of influence and the true nature of his self promotion. I urge all readers to check out the article on MSNBC under the politcal heading. I'm now convinced that Obama is a fraud and a self promoting animal that is infact a cover for a SHOW ME THE MONEY we can make a deal period same old political influence peddler only this time he is smooth and articulate.

McCrazy   August 22nd, 2008 9:40 am ET

We should let them both be president. Obama can have the US, and McCain can have Iraq-merica.

To Energy–

I cannot imagine why he would pick Clinton. She has far too much baggage, and her selection would go against everything he's been running on. With Bill in the picture, Obama would risk looking like a third wheel. And I rather doubt that Hillary would accept–why would she relegate herself to a secondary role, when she'd have a much more powerful voice in the Senate? After her history-making run for the office, her mandate in the Senate would be powerful, indeed.

Marge   August 22nd, 2008 9:38 am ET

I am sick and tired of hearing about Obama. Just pick and VP already!!! You are not that special, so stop acting like the world revolves around you. Be the leader that you said you would be, and focus of the issues not how many houses people own.

"I didn't decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. Any democrat who votes for John McCain out of bitterness is doing considerable damage to this country. He will undoubtedly take us down the same path as Bush/Cheney and it is very possilbe will provoke a World War III. All he seems to talk about is war. That is his anwser for everything.

I wonder why so many of the Obamabots are attacking all Republicans. For followers of a man who preaches post partisanship you people certainly set the bar very low. It's not one party that has gotten us into this mess, it's the collective "leadership" of Congress. Let me ask, though, what has the Democratic leadership done since they took Congress? What substantive measures have been taken? I agree, nothing much was done when the GOP was in charge but don't attack them when the Dems are doing the same thing – nothing.

Anybody reading the news these days?

It seems Michelle Obama, as VP of the U of C Medical center praised herself in 2006 for improving ties with minority contractors. One of the ways she did that was to award a half million dollar contract to one of her husband's biggest fundraiser whose company was "invited" to bid on the project.

As people in Chicago and Illinois know all too well, that's how things work here in politics. The politician maintains a superficial appearance of propriety by funnelling kickbacks and paybacks through his spouse and family.

Another great example of the Chicago style politics the nation will enjoy if Obama gets elected is exemplified by Obama's "godfather" in the Illinois Senate, Emil Jones. He announced his retirement this week and since he was already on the November ballot, the Democratic part leaders decided the best replacement was his son, Emil Jones III, who, with only a high school diploma, holds a $60k patronage job doing "community outreach" for our Democratic Governor. Of course, young Emil is only following in the footsteps of Todd Stroger was became President of the County Board after his father admitted after his election last year that he was too debilitated by a stroke to serve.

I hope Obama's VP choice understands how business is done in Chicago politics.

William "Hussien" Randolph Hearst   August 22nd, 2008 9:27 am ET

Obama will bring a new civility to American society.

He has not tantalized and teased us with this selection but the 24/7 news machine has been lusting after this information since before June 3rd. Instead of feeding this celebrity fodder, he is saying …chill.

The early reporting of the congresswoman's death this week is but a recent example of the slide in professionalism. Imagine instead a world where getting information right rather than getting it first is appreciated … in fact required … in a journalist?

President Bush promised to fire staff that leaked information to manipulate the press and the American citizentry. Senator Obama doesn't need to make any such promise but walking the walk he is ushering in a new day. Keep bringing dignity and civility back to the public discussion Senator.

Now … keep pounding the snot out of that dishonorable opportunistic politician McCain.

The only reason Obama is taking so long to announce his VP is because of his drop in the polls. He knows that he needs Hillary to win but he has been hoping that polls would get better so party members would stop pressuring him to pick her.

Hillary for President. Obama for VP. This would give him the opportunity to gain experience that at present he totally lacks.

It is disappointing that there are those who are so Billary hungry that they can't move past there anger. However, I know that change is hard. Had to put this one here since the other one closed.
Obama and the DEMs are letting us down.

Straight and simple McCain is an elitist and purely dishonest.

I may not know much about being rich with my single mortgage but for McCain to pathetically deflect a question on his home ownership to his staff is beyond reason. Why would his staff know more of what he owns than he does? Clearly he’s able to lie with a straight face. Soon enough McCain will come back and tell us he was joking. We have a joke in the WH so we don’t need another joker in the WH for 4 more years. Obama/DEMs need to get on this “Straight Lie Express” and run it aground. If McCain truly doesn’t know, that makes it even worse because I don’t want someone who doesn’t have a clue what he owns running our country.

Biden is very problematic with foot-in-mouth disease, Bayh is way to right-of-center for the majority of the party, and Bill Richardson is a mixed bag; but, no way Clinton – waaaay too polarizing as a candidate and much better as Attorney General or Supreme Court. My darkhorse is still Al Gore – as a measure keeping the world's attention on U.S. leadership in global energy security and green initiatives and innovation that will bring about a societal shift towards sustainability. It would be an amazing platform for Gore and solidify the experience factor for Obama. The GOP is still in denial of what economic opportunities exist domestically and abroad by making a quantum policy shift on energy and security. Obama would be smart to bright-line these differences.

Carl from MI   August 22nd, 2008 9:05 am ET

This is a story for the Ticker?? CNN, this is pretty lame!! As if this is a controversial topic and needs discussion on the Ticker.

Whomever came up with this story to be entered onto the Ticker should be sent home for the day, and quite possibly fired!!

Karl Marx   August 22nd, 2008 9:04 am ET

I got one of these calls last night…needless to say I was very disappointed. I will continue to do all I can to get Obama into the White House, however.

Abby   August 22nd, 2008 9:04 am ET

I’m sure it’s a wonderful choice.

Doris,Memphis, TN   August 22nd, 2008 9:02 am ET

This getting to be silly season.
Senator just name the person and stop playing games.
You are getting some bad advice on how to handle this from
your advisors.

Emit R Detsaw   August 22nd, 2008 9:02 am ET

Called the runner ups……

….. I didn't get called so guess I am still in the running. ;o)

Great job of stringing on the press. I think he should call a press conference, walk up to the podium, thank everyone for coming, then pull out his blackberry and press the send button. Then leave the stage. ;o)

Open Your 3rd Eye   August 22nd, 2008 9:01 am ET

EVAN BAYH IS A MEMBER OF THE BILDERBERG GROUP!!

THEY HAVE CLOSE TIES TO ILLUMINATI.

CHOOSING HIM WOULD BE A DISASTER!!

IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE PLEASE GOOGLE IT!!

JOE BIDEN IS CLEAN FROM WHAT I GATHERED BUT I STILL THINK OBAMA COULD DO BETTER.

Robert   August 22nd, 2008 9:01 am ET

I hope HRC got that 3am phone call she always talked about.

anon   August 22nd, 2008 9:01 am ET

How long has it been since the VP pick made a significant difference in an election?

I'll be glad when this Veepstakes is OVER!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   August 22nd, 2008 9:00 am ET

Unless you can tell us who got the calls that they didn't make it as VP, don't bother saying anything. There were no hints were there?

Bubba   August 22nd, 2008 9:00 am ET

He called me about 11:30 last night, and I was so drunk I thought it was Ron Paul again. I tell you all like I told both of them, I ain't interested in being the Vice President. Find some other sucker.

Miss C   August 22nd, 2008 9:00 am ET

ok

Ron L   August 22nd, 2008 8:59 am ET

I am REALLY trying to understand WHY this is such a BIG DEAL. To me it is really kind of stupid to spend so much time and energy speculating on who Obama or McCain will pick. Once they make the selections then we are going to have to listen to ALL the GENIUS pundits on whether or not is was a good choice. While at the same time they will tell us we vote of the President not the Vice President. You know what would be a lot more USEFUL>>>
1) Detailed information on their plans to make Health Care affordable. Including why they may or may not work -not just the cost issues.
2) A real serious discussion about their different approaches about taxes..And not this five minute crap in which you have one expert say why it will work and another saying why it won't. I mean an detailed 30 minutes to an hour getting into the strengths and weaknesses.
3) A real open discussion about our shrinking manufacturing base and how they plan to honestly slow down some of the outsourcing or do they even really care.
I could go on but I believe you understand what I am saying..as I have written many times before..AMERICAS LARGEST OBSTACLE IN BECOME GREATER IS THE MENTAL SMALLNESS IN THE NEWS MEDIA. THEY TREAT US AS IF WE ARE BORDERLINE ILLITERATE. WE DESERVE AND SHOULD DEMAND BETTER.

BOB   August 22nd, 2008 8:59 am ET

DID HE CALL BILL!

REPUBLICAN FOR OBAMA   August 22nd, 2008 8:58 am ET

I hope Hillary and Biden were not called.

Either would be great.

Mike   August 22nd, 2008 8:57 am ET

CNN, this is BS. Stop trying to imply that Obama is putting down the VP candidates. I was sucked into the title of this ticker and I will not be fooled again.

I WILL NO LONGER BE LOOKING AT YOUR WEBSITE!!!

JDC // Ohio   August 22nd, 2008 8:55 am ET

Doesn't matter who Obama selects as his "running mate;" the fact that the Dems are on the WRONG side on the oil-drilling issue (They will not vote for more drilling), seals their fate come November.
They are too stupid to realize the American people want (and need) oil; it is what keeps our economy humming.
Pelosi single-handedly is giving McCain a victory in November.
Thank you, Nancy!!!

Bob Indianapolis, IN   August 22nd, 2008 8:55 am ET

Barack,

Jest remember: Good Judgement trumps experience! Exhibit A: Dick Cheney, whose "experience" in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan White Houses turned him into the machiavellian monster that created the imperial presidency that did its best to destroy America, and succeeded beyond bin Laden's wildest dreams…

TangoDancer   August 22nd, 2008 8:54 am ET

I imagine that this has been a difficult process in determing the VP. Good luck senator and future president. Whoever gets selected will undoubtedly be honored to stand at your side to lead the country forward and out of this right-wing inquisition dark age.

Nancy   August 22nd, 2008 8:54 am ET

I am sure he will do the right thing. He knows the pros and cons of every single candidate and I know he is intelligent enough to know who not to pick. I have complete faith in his decision. This man is meant to lead this country. And he will!!!!

Why aren't the newsmedia talking about how Bush is pulling out the troops under Obama's plan.
How will McCain explain that.

TyWebb   August 22nd, 2008 8:54 am ET

Senator Stevens had to decline…too much going on at the moment.

lovable liberal   August 22nd, 2008 8:53 am ET

That's a hot story! An anonymous source tells CNN that Obama made phone calls. Not only that, the calls were to unnamed VP short list candidates who were not selected. Oh, my, what a scoop! Obama's polite and does the right thing for his allies.

Could you just let us know when you actually have some news?

Enlightened Voter   August 22nd, 2008 8:52 am ET

Anyone and I mean anyone BUT hillary!

Neil   August 22nd, 2008 8:50 am ET

Good job Captain Obvious!!

Dave in Illinois   August 22nd, 2008 8:50 am ET

With the media's help, the VP selection and announcement process has turned into a carnival sideshow with a new teaser report released every day. It's a good marketing ploy and I guess that part of Obama's new politics, slick marketing campaigns that are full of flash but no substance.

Regardless of who is selected, Obama is still the inexperienced, liberal politician running for President and the VP is just a guy who will get to bang the gavel in the Senate for 4 years and say "Yes Sir, Mr. President, whatever you say, Sir."

JAMES DUCKWORTH   August 22nd, 2008 8:50 am ET

THANK GOD HE WILL NOT SELECT BILLARY CLINTON
SHE HAS WAY TO MUCH BAGGAGE TO GO ALONG WITH HER
RANKING PEOPLE AROUND THE CLINTONS HAVE A WAY OF
BEING FOUND DEAD , WE DON'T NEED ANOTHER KENNEDY

Democrats Unite & Vote Big   August 22nd, 2008 8:50 am ET

The suspense!…..

Heard of a great idea floating around on several blogs – Go to a McCain event with key rings representing his 8-9 houses and shake them in protest. You could even shake your own keys.

Steve Green   August 22nd, 2008 8:49 am ET

If he does not select Clinton ,he will lose the election!

Obamarican   August 22nd, 2008 8:48 am ET

As long as it's not Hillary it's cool. He has been accused of not helping her when in my opinion, he shouldn't help her with anything. Why should he help her pay for the slanderous campaign that she ran against him? She's making demands, holding her delegates hostage until she gets what she wants by using them as leverage. She's bullied herself into a nomination at the DNC, she has her own video in the making that will be aired there, she is going to speak even though this (doing everything she can to see Obama elected) has not materialized. She makes no comment or effort to derail PUMA's attacks and protests. She even has her husband Bill speaking even though he has not said one kind or supportive word about Obama. She deserves to be in debt and even if by some miracle of Christ she managed to steal the nomination from Obama her chances of eve holing higher office were gone when she started all of the theatrics. Just as her 18 million wont vote for OBAMA, I and many like me will never Vote for a Clinton anything, I'd be really surprised if she's even able to get her senate seat back.

chucky   August 22nd, 2008 8:48 am ET

Although I'm not a Clinton supporter, i really think Obama should make her VP, as it would make his whitehouse bid stronger. but to suggest that Obama owes her is really stupid. he didn't ask her to run for president. that was a choice she made. when she was down in the race, he didn't ask her to stay in it. yeah it would be nice if he would help her but he doesnt owe it to her. it would be nice if my neighbor helped me with my house payment, but he doesnt owe it to me cause he lives next to me.

SIMP   August 22nd, 2008 8:48 am ET

Let'sust wait and see. I know Obama will pick the best VP that suits him. I have my choice and believe me it's not Hillary and bill. I don't care who Obama picks, he could pick donald duck just as long as he does not pick Hillary I don't trust her and she has that baggage of a husband bill.

Obama

above my pay grade um ah um um ah ah   August 22nd, 2008 8:48 am ET

The ones who got the calls were the lucky ones…..Who wants to be a part of a failed presidential bid, not to mention a dishonest man.

D&D   August 22nd, 2008 8:47 am ET

So? What did you want him to do, to let them find out at the same time than everybody else?
That's the least he could have done to show his respect for them!

Amy   August 22nd, 2008 8:47 am ET

YOU PEOPLE IN MEDIA BUSINESS DON'T YOU SEE OBAMA IS PLAYING GAMES WITH YOU JUST TO DRAW MORE PUBLICITY TO HIMSELVES, HE WILL DO ANYTHING TO GET ELECTED.
EVEN YOU GUYS HELPED HIM TO GET WHERE HE IS NOW HE WILL
REVEAL HIS DECISION FIRST TO HIS SUPPORTERS BY E-MAIL SHOWING DISRESPECT FOR THOSE (OLDER PEOPLE) WHO DON'T USE COMPUTERS.

Sick & Tired of Nobama   August 22nd, 2008 8:46 am ET

Gosh, who really cares? Such hype! He is making this all a circus rather than the very serious thing that it is.
Nominating and voting for a president and VP is not a joke or celebrity show. We are picking someone to run our country. The longer this goes on, with all this texting BS, the more the American people see just what a joke and empty suit this guy is.
Get serious Nobama. You are showing more and more that the American people cannot trust you to run the country. This is not a game, a game show, etc.

CM   August 22nd, 2008 8:45 am ET

Good thing he let them know now so that it won't be like a beauty pageant tomorrow.

Doesn't matter who he picks, he still wins. All the polls haven't counted the brave men and women around the world serving this country who donate to Obama over McCain 6-1.

Those absentee ballots will be one of many factors that will tip Obama past the 270 mark.

EMJ   August 22nd, 2008 8:45 am ET

Bo tried to call Hillary and tell her she was not selected but her phone has been disconnected for not paying her bills.

A C-SPAN Junkie   August 22nd, 2008 8:44 am ET

Barack, you will have to prove you can lead not blow smoke. So far your just alot of hot air and hype. I'm one of those undecided but leaning, to who, well you take a guess. I want change with experience and home boy that is all dependent on whom McCain chooses. Infact if he picks wrong I just may stay home and rack the leaves on 11/4. You Disrespected my Senator so if you think just because she asks for my vote for you well, think of it this way I choose her she didn't choose me.

Obama/Clinton 08

CLINTON 2012 :-)

al phillips   August 22nd, 2008 8:44 am ET

If there is ANY doubt how you inspire a country and lead a country, look at how Obama has RUN his campaign.

The fear the REPUGs have of Obama is that he will INSPIRE the nation and there would NOT be anymore WEDGE politics to play to divide and rule.

Matt   August 22nd, 2008 8:44 am ET

I find it hilarious how much this clown is milking his VP selection. He keeps trying to bait the public. All just a publicity stunt. More proof that he's more of a 'celebrity' than a politician.

Alexa-Hillary as vp!   August 22nd, 2008 8:43 am ET

That must've been a hard job. I certainly hope that be chooses Sen. Clinton for the vp spot!! He alone doesn't have the experience.

dEMOBRAT   August 22nd, 2008 8:42 am ET

If he does not choose Clinton we will know just how big this guy's ego really is.

joshua   August 22nd, 2008 8:42 am ET

If hillary is not VP I WILL NOT vote for obama, they need eachother!!

obamaton   August 22nd, 2008 8:42 am ET

Off-topic, but Cargill posted almost $1 billion in profits during the second quarter 0f 2008! At a time when most Americans are stuggling to put food on the table and fuel in the tank! Further, Big Agribusiness is one of the most heavily government-subsidized industries in the world! I demand that Congress investigate Big Farm!

ex dem   August 22nd, 2008 8:41 am ET

at this point I really dont care… Like Mccain said the other day, your job is to break tie votes in the Senate and check on the presidents health daily. Lame duck position, I think obama is making too much of it. Leave the Drama for the teens obama, GO TEXT SOME KIDS>>>

Jeremey, Chi Town   August 22nd, 2008 8:41 am ET

Let's wait to get the text message. What is this American Idol? Is it like $3.99 per text. this is a joke.

Mike - Texas   August 22nd, 2008 8:38 am ET

Based on the number of people that have already turn Obama down, I'll bet that they were happy not to be running with him. Now, who is the sucker that he chose???

RFP   August 22nd, 2008 8:38 am ET

blah…. boring. who cares? it's like the entire world is waiting with baited breath to find out.

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   August 22nd, 2008 8:37 am ET
