Republican Lugar is congratulating Biden.
Republican Lugar is congratulating Biden.

(CNN) — A senior Republican senator is congratulating Democrat Joe Biden on being picked as Barack Obama's running mate.

Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana put out a statement Saturday saying, "I congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his selection of my friend, Senator Joe Biden, to be his vice-presidential running mate. I have enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy."

Lugar made the statement as he was enroute to Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic of Georgia.

Lugar also commented on his fellow senator from Indiana, Democrat Evan Bayh, who was also considered to be on the shortlist of Obama's potential running mates.

"I share the disappointment of many Hoosiers that my partner in the Senate, Evan Bayh, was not selected on this occasion, but I believe he will continue to have widespread support for higher office during many years ahead."

UPDATE: A McCain Campaign aide tells CNN’s Dana Bash that the Senator from Arizona will call Biden at some point this morning to congratulate him.

Thank you Mr. Lugar for showing your true colors.

Senator Lugar is a real gentleman whose whole political career has been illustrious. I lived in Indianapolis when he was its mayor in the 1960's, and although I've always been a registed Democrat, I have also admired Lugar.

Both career politicians who spent their career inside the Washington Beltway. Abraham Lincoln delivered on a promise to only serve one 2-year term in Congress, and also served a few terms in the rough-and-tumble Illinios legislature. Jesse Ventura for President!

Great choice-anyone voting for McCain and who-ever he picks as his running mate, get what they deserve and have no right to complain when they get the same of what we've had for the last 8 years…
This Obama/Biden ticket is a great balance no matter what the pundits and Republicans will be saying. Team work is what is needed to make what was once a great country, before Bush, great again

its nice to see one republican who can come out and say something nice about obamas pick and keep his opinions on the high road
kudos to you Dick Lugar for that for their will be few
Biden will be good for Obama and people should not be so quick to judge him for not picking Hillary
perhaps Hillary and Obama talked about a more forceful role in his cabinet
like attorney general or secretary of state or something to do with health care.hillary would bring a lot to any vital role and maybe thats what *she wanted* when she lost in the primaries not vp
Biden is a good pick

Hillary is a true blue Democrat. She wants this country to thrive again and will set aside her desires to insure it will be a Democrat as President. I wanted Hillary as president and still do. I am not a true blue Democrat, I still feel Obama will be bad for this country. Which brings into question, my faith in Hillary. Not all Democrats are good people. Not just any Democrat will do. I will still write her name on my ballot, be it wasted or not. We have had Republicans in office a majority of the time and ROE v Wade is still a law. McCain does not need the money anymore then JFK needed the money. New money is the most dangerous. I bet Obama wants his profile on Mt. Rushmore, as the first black president. Obama is in it for the glory and the money, the money it brings later. God help us if he wins…

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 23rd, 2008 10:54 am ET

That's very gracious. This IS how politics should be, an intelligent debate, respectful disagreement, etc. Not the mean-hatefilled-fear-mongering the GOP & McCain have been doing.

Its TRUE that MOST Independents loathe negative ads, and here is McCain being Mr. Destroy! What comes around goes around, McCain!

Marion Kaple   August 23rd, 2008 10:40 am ET

It's nice to see that there still is some commity in the Senate. Senator Luger is a good example of how politics should work–people with different views of how to deal with our pressing issues, but with respect and good will for those on the other side of the aisle. Let's hope and pray a new era is coming in which both parties truly work together for the common good.

DId you read Biden's comments in the PRIMARIES, many months ago? ""Who among us is going to pick up the phone and immediately interface with Putin and tell him to lay off Georgia because Saakashvili is in real trouble." Talk about good judgment, good foresight, and a sense of what's really up in the world (and compare to the guy who thinks Iraq and Pakistan share a border…)

Too all of the Pumas out there for Hillary Clinton, please shut up and go back to the hole you came from. We don't need 8 more years of Bush 3. OBAMA 2008 people. Don't be stupid.

I laugh so hard when I see stupid comments on here about how PUMA and Hillary supporters are just "republicans" trying to cause trouble. You're darned tootin I'm a republican….NOW. I tore up my Democratic registration card last month and re-registered republican. The way I look at it, our "democratic" congress has done NOTHING to improve matters and Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean have hijacked the democratic party . They have forced a non-viable candidate upon the voters who obviously wanted Hillary and caused the party to implode. So, having said that, This NEW republican will be voting ALL republican this year in the hopes that we survive another four years until the democratic party does some serious housecleaning and re-vamping. As long as Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean think they run this country I will fight tooth and nail to prove them wrong!

Neal   August 23rd, 2008 10:12 am ET

That's too bad Biden would've been better in the Senate.
To bad Obama couldn't have found someone more non-traditional. Wesley Clarke type, perhaps a Republican Senator.

James From Chicago   August 23rd, 2008 10:11 am ET

I think it is wonderful that people are congrat Biden. He is a good man, He would make a good VP with Hillary, What a team that would make. Does Biden really want to carry Obama through his whole
Presidency?? He is going to have to, as Obama can never lead this country.

BJ in NC   August 23rd, 2008 10:00 am ET

Why would you call someone to congratulate them on winning when the first thing you did was put out a negative ad about something that they said while they were competing for the same position? Is it me or is this one more peg on McCain's board. "Straighttalk McCain" has taken so many twists and turns. Good thing his express is not riding on the Grapevine or he would have been in the ocean long ago.

Soldier for OBAMA   August 23rd, 2008 9:57 am ET

John McCain will call Biden, funny what hypocracy, after McCain realeased a negative ad prior to calling Biden, McCain campaign is so worried about the Movement that they don't under stand basic protocol.
Richard Lugar of Indiana will endorse the OBAMA-BIDEN ticket, OBAMA was and is very focus. Biden will allow Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Nevada, Colorado and New Hampshire along with Michigan to go Democratic in 2 months. Get on board America, the Movement is coming to a state near you!

I trust Obama judgment. This is a formidable duo that will give America back its standing in the world and create better future for all americans.

The Truth   August 23rd, 2008 9:51 am ET

This will shut the doors for those who call McCain old and senile, well Biden is no better, and has had health problems. Obama wanted to season his running for president with someone close to McCain to help him, cause he needs it. How sad. This inexperience young man is aspiring to be something he is not. God help us if he should even get close to winning. It would be a sad day for America.

California Gold   August 23rd, 2008 9:49 am ET

To follow up on my other post, McCain better pick an equivalent VP running mate or his ticket won't be able to withstand the high power Democrat ticket that's gearing up to steam roll right over McCain straight into the White House. If McCain picks pretty boy Romney, a Governor with no federal government experience, he has put a flimsy team together and sabotaged his campaign. Romney vs. Biden would be the ultimate comedy. Romney would certainly approach a debate with "what in the heck am I doing?" A governor vs. senior Congressman who chairs Foreign Policy Committee? A joke! :-)

Abe   August 23rd, 2008 9:49 am ET

Biden came from poor family, still takes train to his home in Delaware (not a private jut like the McCain's) and he is definietly one of us!! I love this guy. He doesn't need to pretend to undestand working people issues like Mit and McCain because he is one of us.

Mike in Houston   August 23rd, 2008 9:47 am ET

California Gold   August 23rd, 2008 9:41 am ET

Senator Lugar and Senator Biden have years of exceptional service together on committee level and on the Senate floor. They are friends as well as colleagues and both are extraordinary Senators. Senator Lugar's praise of Senator Biden is not your typical hollow Washington rhetoric. If Lugar praises a Democrat, it's sincere, earned and well placed. His praise of Biden certainly doesn't bode well for McCain. Lugar is a highly respected, powerhouse Republican.

john l.a.   August 23rd, 2008 9:39 am ET

Jo Anne K.   August 23rd, 2008 9:24 am ET

I can't be happier for the Democratic Party.Sen. Biden is a man who speaks up and tells people exactly the way it is.He has loads of experience.Yes,he's been in Washington for several years, that doesn't mean he agrees with every politician in that city.He doesn't sugar coat things and ride the fence. When he speaks, people listen and people understand.Everyone "please" go out and vote in Nov.It's our constitutional right and privilege as citizens of this great country who enjoy freedoms that people in other countries would and do die for. After the last 8 yrs.,we need to give the Democratic nominees a chance to make things right.

The only possible way that Obama had of gaining back many Clinton supporters would have been to choose her as his running mate. This guarantees that they will not vote for him. I have been a lifelong Democrat but will be sitting this election out. Whoever wins, it will be a disaster and I will have no part of it. The choices for this campaign cycle range from bad (Obama) to worse (McCain.) The sad part is that those who are presidential candidates should be Americas best and brightest. If this is the best we can do we are doomed.

R   August 23rd, 2008 8:54 am ET

I'm glad Obama FINALLY announced his decision - the constant "who will he pick" headlines had about as much suspense as a Fox reality show.

I'm an average american - and I'm flat out disgusted with the whole political process. Obama, McCain, Clinton…none of them have any idea on how to get America back on it's feet and are all equally unfit to be president. Yes, I know Clinton is not in the running anymore and her "supporters" are contemplating backing McCain out of spite. That's fine, but doing things out of spite does not make for a good president. We as a nation should be better than that.

I only hope and pray whoever our next president is, that they will listen to and take care of "we the people." Otherwise, I wouldn't be surprised if an "Independant" became the next president of the United States.

Joseph   August 23rd, 2008 8:53 am ET

Joe Biden is a smart choice by Obama.
This indicates Obama is not only level headed and intelligent, but, wise too. Unlike the GOP candidate, Obama has worked hard to earn his wealth, he is highly educated, his IQ is high, he has good judgement, he is a consensus builder, he is a good manager and knows how to utilize his staff's experience and knowledge to serve the best interest of the people of USA. I hope people think wisely and don't vote blindly for the GOP candidate.

And I share the extreme disappointment of 18 million Hillary supporters, who must be as frustrated as I am right now at this snub, not only to her, but to all of us. Biden is a nice man and a good Senator, but the choice of the people was Hillary. Obviously, Obama doesn't care, and hopes we are going to come around. McCain is an AWFUL choice for President, but I'm not certain Obama is a lot better with his changes since the primaries. Can we have a do-over please?

oldsoldierboy   August 23rd, 2008 8:44 am ET

Nice to see a republican support the ticket. To the Clinton supporters who plan to vote for McCain: Obama & Clinton political beliefs mirrored each other approximately 90% of the time. So the only reason you won't vote for Obama is because you are racially bias. Grow up or you will be drafted when McCain gets in office and he will send you to Iraq, Iran, and then Syria on multiple deployments. Is 4 or 8 more years of misery worth the color of Obama's skin.

Lou R   August 23rd, 2008 8:42 am ET

Joe Biden is a well respected person. Teaming up with Barack Obama makes the two of them a powerful campaign duo. As McCain has only negativity left in his campaign quill, look for more of the same.

The GOP may congratulate Biden but just watch. They are too negative and America is sick of it! McCain is cunning and dishonest and totally out of touch with Americans. My family and all my friends will never support Hillary in any position she tries to run for, we've lost any respect we ever had for her. Also, Biden is infinitely more qualified for VP than Hillary will ever be.

If it Biden that means it the "end of the Clinton era", thank god.

No more Bill and Hillary show.

Who cares if the muslim is president, has to be better than the Clintons.

I would think that Hillary will lose her spot in congress next election. Most democrats will lose their seats with a approval rating of 8%.

Now let the real history of Bill Clinton be told.

McCain 08, the only real American running for president.

Florida Democrat   August 23rd, 2008 8:17 am ET

Lugar is a good guy, and more than likely one of the 100 or so Republicans that aren't going to attend McCains coronation.

Fella from Chicago   August 23rd, 2008 8:13 am ET

This is the change Obama was talking about? Biden's views most closely matches that of Senator McCain's, not Obama's. Barack, the good Senator Biden voted for the Iraq war, not against it. Biden also criticized Obama's inexperience during the debates and said he wasn't ready for the presidency yet so what's he going to say now, that all of a sudden he's ready. Biden is part of the old Washington political circle. There's no change here. Bye Barack, you lost.

PUMAS For McCain   August 23rd, 2008 8:13 am ET

Obama's message has been about unity from the beginning. Unity doesn't mean snubbing half the democratic party by picking Biden over Clinton. This just says to me Obama is a hypocrite and that once in a position of power he's going to do whatever he wants. Unity means COMPROMISE!!!

WELL THANKS DICK, AND WISH U SFE JOURNEY TO TBILISI. ALSO WAITING FOR YOU TO COME BACK AND HELP LEAD THE BIPARTISAN EFFORTS WHEN OBAMA BECOMES THE PRESIDENT. WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU WHO ARE WILLING TO WORK ACROSS PARTY LINE AND BRING THIS COUNTRY WERE IT NEEDS TO BE.

NOW TO THE POINT FOR THE NO GOOD SAYERS WITH THE CLINTON SYNDRUM GET OVER IT OR THIS COUNTRY WILL SERIOUSLY BE IN TROUBLE. THIS MAY SOUND LIKE A FUN THING TO BE DRAGING THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND ITS NOMINEE, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS? ITS SAYING BUY BUY TO THE AMERICAN ANYTIME FROM NOW. THIS WORLD SHOULD BETTER WAKE UP THROUGH AMERICA, BUT IF WE ARE NOT CAREFULL SOME BUNCH OF IDIOTS WILL CHOSE THEIR SELF STUPIDITY TO TRUMP THE GRACE THAT GOD HAS CREATED ALL HUMANS TO BE EQUAL AND THAT.
SO DEMOCRATES LET US BE VERY CAREFULL AND BURRY OUR DIFFERENCES BY COMING TOGETHER FOR ONE GOOD COMMON PORPOSE. THE ISSUE OF IF IT WAS HILLARY I WILL VOTE , BUT BECAUSE SHE IS NOT THE ONE I WILL VOTE FOR MC CAIN IS THE MOST BUFUNISH WAY OF THINKING. JUST TO BE CLEAR IF IT HAD BEEN EITHER IT WILL HAVE STILL BEEN BETTER THAN VOTING REPUBLICAN MORRONS. OBAMA/CLITON OR OBAMA/BIDEN IS STILL THE BEST. Obama = Carter the 2nd!!!   August 23rd, 2008 8:11 am ET

"In the summer of 2006, as he was publicly mulling the race, Biden set off a controversy over comments he made about Indian Americans.

"I've had a great relationship [with Indian Americans]," Biden said. "In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking."

terry   August 23rd, 2008 8:11 am ET

I am A dem. from a way back and when Obama was the nomoniee for the dem. I was voting for McCane as Obama has not not got the experrance to be commander and cheif but know I am voting for Obama because he still has no experance but Bindon has all of the experance that Obama dose not have and Obama will gain the experiance that is needed. Obama could not have picked a better running mate and Obama needs to head what Biden says and rely on Bindens experance

mike-florida   August 23rd, 2008 8:10 am ET

To quote Julia Roberts: "Big mistake. Big. Huge!"

I was just waiting to see if he continued to disrespect Hillary.

Now I know…….now, just one more Democrat for McCain!

Jeff K. / Galena, MO   August 23rd, 2008 8:09 am ET

I agree with Dick Lugar, when talking about Evan Bayh, he says "I believe he will continue to have widespread support for higher office during many years ahead." Bayh would make a great VP pick for 2012.

hillary   August 23rd, 2008 8:08 am ET

Well, I will continue to donate and pay down Hillary's debt.
I will then begin giving my support to John McCain, the moderate.
I voted for dems my whole life, no I'm not a republican.
Let me be very clear, for me my problem with BO STARTED with his snotty comment "You're likable enough, Hillary." In fact, for a few weeks I was convinced that I was the only Hillary supporter who saw so much bias in the media and nasty comments from the BO campaign. It just got sooooooo bad!

As the campaign progressed I realized I was not alone, and I was not wrong. Biden, what a joke. BO just admitted he has NO experience.
He will for sure lose in Nov.
Go McCain!

Nice   August 23rd, 2008 8:08 am ET

I am always amazed, when Republicans say something, that isn't venomous and hateful. Thanks Dick.

Sandy   August 23rd, 2008 8:07 am ET

Great choice considering this is NEW politics. Select someone almost as old as McCain. Select someone with eons of Washington service. And select someone more qualified than yourself. Way to go Barry. You really know how to CHANGE things, don't you.

Brenda   August 23rd, 2008 8:06 am ET

Barack Obama proves that he lacks experience and insight to run this country. Why don't he go all the way, instead of choosing Joe Biden why just try Donald Trump or Larry King on the ticket. 5 votes from our household will be gone. Thanks to Obama.

ck   August 23rd, 2008 8:05 am ET

Wow…

All that Hollywood styled hype for Biden??

Obama and the Dems are taking themselves
WAY TOO SERIOUS!

Jane Hall   August 23rd, 2008 8:03 am ET

My opinion of Barack just went up.In choosing Biden as VP,Obama has shown that he is not afraid to surround himself with independent thinkers who might be critical of him. I continue to believe we,as a country would be in different circumstances today, if Pres. Bush had been willing to open himself to differing opinions spoken candidly by people around, instead of surrounding himself with "yes men".

If I had doubt before about Barack judgement in any areas, I no longer do since this choice shows he can put "best for us" ahead of himself.

Ted   August 23rd, 2008 8:03 am ET

Biden — the perfect foil for Palin!

Eleanor   August 23rd, 2008 8:01 am ET

its nice to see one republican who can come out and say something nice about obamas pick and keep his opinions on the high road
kudos to you Dick Lugar for that for their will be few
Biden will be good for Obama and people should not be so quick to judge him for not picking Hillary
perhaps Hillary and Obama talked about a more forceful role in his cabinet
like attorney general or secretary of state or something to do with health care.hillary would bring a lot to any vital role and maybe thats what *she wanted* when she lost in the primaries not vp
Biden is a good pick

Obama = Carter the 2nd!!!   August 23rd, 2008 8:00 am ET

So did people get the texts before the news was sent out?????/ NO. You have to love Obama and he say one change and do another.

Biden has been in DC YEARS long than McCain. WOW so if you O backers say McCain has been around to long then you must want Biden to go too right???/ Oh that is right you are flip flopper too.

This is very funny. Where is the change???? Seems like the same old same old stuff that happens in DC.

Monica for Obama in Indiana   August 23rd, 2008 7:59 am ET

Thanks Senator Lugar

Kjetil   August 23rd, 2008 7:59 am ET

That was nice words from a republican. Great that people can show respect for eachother even if in different parties.

William   August 23rd, 2008 7:57 am ET

Watch McCain pick a woman for his VP and run away with the presidency.

William   August 23rd, 2008 7:56 am ET

Ralph Nader said that Obama isn't stupid enough to pick Bayh or Biden. I thought that Obama would be stupid enough, and I was right.

I am a lifelong democrat, but I will not vote for someone who was never my choice for president.

If Hillary Clinton's name is on the ballot, I will vote for her, if not, I will write it in.

Kristina, Texas   August 23rd, 2008 7:55 am ET

Obama just sunk any chance he had at becoming president. The only way I would have voted for him is if he had picked Hillary for VP. For the first time in my life I am going to vote for a Republican. What an idiotic choice Obama. The Obama campaign just sunk any chance it had at unity. I am going to be smiling when he loses, and I am going to campaign my heart out for McCain so look out. Democratic women should vote for McCain in protest. He only picked Biden, because he and his campaign is sexist!

KateyGreen   August 23rd, 2008 7:54 am ET

Obama is the "change" candidate? Biden supported the war in Iraq, Biden supported funding the troops when Obama did not, Biden is part of the wise foreign policy establishment. What does the selection of Biden say about Obama? Does Obama now think his opposition to the war in Iraq was wrong? Or does Obama think Biden was wrong on the most important issue of the day? Will Obama totally ignore Biden's foreign policy advice, or will Obama allow Biden to lead him into another Iraq?

Cathie   August 23rd, 2008 7:53 am ET

I think the 3 am call was masterful irony. Remember when the big question was who do you want to answer the 3am call to the White House?

Well, America and Joe Biden answered the call. WE are the people represented by barack Obama and Joe Biden who need to answer the call.

I love it! The 3 am call!

alpha   August 23rd, 2008 7:49 am ET

congrat senator biden.
Obama/biden 08

anna   August 23rd, 2008 7:48 am ET

Who is CALLING me a RACIST?????

Biden supported the war.
Biden supported the Surge.
Biden is polarized and opinionated, sometimes controversial.
Biden has been in Washington for a very long time.

Biden is very similar to the former Presidential Candidate who dropped out a few months ago.
Except he didnt get any delegates when he ran.
Hmmmmm….

18 million voters again were slapped in the face by this arrogant campaign and the DNC who were furious with Hillary primarily for her support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and a few other issues where her votes were more moderate.

But the better choice is the white man, I guess.

Rich   August 23rd, 2008 7:45 am ET

The Obama folks are gonna have their hands full preventing Biden from overshadowing Obama. This is one of those cases where it really is unfortuante the ticket is not reversed. The senior, experienced Biden along with the junior, aspiring Obama could have been a killer ticket and administration.

Ron from Bel Air   August 23rd, 2008 7:43 am ET

Lugar is the first of many congratulations to come. These two guys need more than congrats, of course, and let's see how the party pulls together to get everyone needed to ensure victory into the tent.

Biden is an excellent legislator, debater, thinker; no problems there. It's an interesting exercise, still, to think about who might have been the choice had Russia not invaded Georgia last week, if gasoline prices had kept climbing, had the nation been totally overcome by another Katrina-level humanitarian/government disaster. I know Biden is not a one-note expert, but there his selection is somewhat of-the-moment, given his international expertise and ability to talk tough while smiling. So, for now, let's get going—

willy   August 23rd, 2008 7:42 am ET

Obama secured the election for McCain. Thank you Mr. Change!

Herny the Independent from NYC   August 23rd, 2008 7:42 am ET

The ticket is now solid. The other choices were good but this is the winner. Senator Clinton should head the health incentive in the Senate; Baye, Richardson, and Kane should be in the cabinet as long as they all can be replaced with democrats.

Typical White Man   August 23rd, 2008 7:38 am ET

Biden is a loser all the way, his idea to bust up Iraq into three nations was maybe the dumbest idea ever uttered in the halls of Congress and that's saying something!

Scott NYC   August 23rd, 2008 7:37 am ET

Senator Baye should be in the cabinet as long as he will be replaced by a Democrat

Carol MI   August 23rd, 2008 7:37 am ET

Those that are crying about experience now have it. He's got several more years under his belt than McCain does so I think McCain can now stop with that whining.
