(CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama has picked Delaware Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate, multiple Democratic sources tell CNN.

The longtime Democratic senator was long considered a likely choice for vice president, but the buzz surrounding him intensified after he returned earlier this week from a two-day trip to the Republic of Georgia after Russian troops invaded.

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, brings years of experience that could help counter GOP arguments that an Obama administration would be inexperienced on foreign policy.

I respect Sen. Obama's choice, Sen. Biden will make a fine VP and its a definite plus for our country that his wife, Jill Biden, is a champion for education. I think both these men understand the concept of priorities and have come together, putting egos aside and the politics of the primaries, so that they can lead the country into a better future.

What is Wrong With Obama?   August 23rd, 2008 7:15 am ET

Obama and McCain are still neck to neck in the polls. Yes, I am a Hillary supporter, but the choice of Obama was made, but I really don't think Obama wants to win. If he choice Hillary that would be a sure chance he would become President. Not only picking a smart, strong, experienced VP, but bringing all Democrate's together. It would have of pushed his numbers up in the polls and would of made this one the most historical election of all time. Obama has been making the wrong decisions throughout his campaign and now the major decision of the VP spot he messed up too. With all the bull that was given to Americans from Obama, you would thing that people would open their eyes and see the truth. Obama picked the right slogan and you all BELIEVE IT! Obama has ran a sad campaign and has had to apologize throughout, What do think would happen in office?
Let's also remember Obama has already took two-three vacations during his campaign. If he can't take the heat now what will happen if his office. Bush was in Texas on vacation when information came in and about Sept 11th. Bush had taken more vacations then any president in history. I guess Obama is following Bush's foot steps.
Cocks standing together!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the Sen Clinton supporters, if you would please resort to reason for just a minute to consider this… how could Sen Obama consider her much less choose her as his running mate if she plans to run for president in 2012? Is the VP supposed to run against the standing president? I don't think so. Just imagine the chaos of the president and vice president squabbling it out in a primary campaign instead of doing their jobs running the country!

Sen Obama is by no means snubbing Sen Clinton in any way. He would be standing in her way by trying to make her the VP. He respects her and honors her service enough to keep her as a viable candidate for future presidential elections.

tws1906   August 23rd, 2008 6:44 am ET

If you decided to vote for McCain due to a VP choice than you are wanting 4-8 years of the same thing we have now in this country…All I ask is that you DO NOT COMPLAIN about anything, KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!!!!

Do Not Complain about the economy, foreign policy, gas and food prices…just keeo your mouth shut.

Obama did not choose Clinton, dry your weeping eyes, you all knew he was not…I thing the same people would complain no matter who he picked.

Next you will complain about McCain's choice for his running mate, if you say your going to vote for him now same time next week.

Patrick   August 23rd, 2008 6:38 am ET

I wish I could realy say what i want. I ask you If the roles vere reverced
Would she pick him?

No_Obama   August 23rd, 2008 6:38 am ET

Biden ran for president before and didn't even make it to the final rounds. Can you imagine having a VP, the second in line to the Presidency, whom even the Democrats have no faith in choosing as their presidential candidate?

Do you really want another 4 years of a younger president with no experience, and a much older VP who has been an active part of the political system?

Karina   August 23rd, 2008 6:37 am ET

I always said, if he is stupid enough to pick a person that will bring him a five gallon bucket full of votes like these guys got in the primaries, then he doesn't have the brains it takes to run this country and therefore, we are better off with Mickey Mouse in the Oval Office. He'd be more qualified and had plenty more fans. The truth of the matter is the Republicans strategy has worked. They had the crossvoters get Hillary out, so they could deal with Osama later. Now they will get what they want even if it is a president who can't even remember how many houses he owns……………Pitiful!

Maxoutkast   August 23rd, 2008 6:36 am ET

Why Biden is a good pick:

A. The McCain camp is calling Biden Obama's toughest critic. Good. That's what Obama said he wanted. Obama has repeatedly said he wanted a candidate who would tell him when he was wrong, and feed him good advice to the contrary. Obama has also made many references to his admiration of Abraham Lincoln's cabinet picks. Lincoln also surrounded himself with some of his toughest critics. This is what we want. We don't want a continuation of cronyism in the White House. We need independent thinkers like Obama and Biden. This criticism by the McCain camp will backfire on them for these reasons. You shouldn't criticize what the other candidate has already covered. Someone over there isn't paying attention.

B. Biden is widely known for being a straight-talker, a real straight-talker unlike what McCain has become.

C. He is widely respected in the Senate and throughout Washington.

D. He comes with very little baggage and controversy, while bringing experience and reputation to the ticket.

E. He is widely known and respected by leaders from around the world, which is exactly what Obama needs.

F. Biden led a humble, though brief, presidential campaign, but could not battle the rock star status of both Obama and Clinton. He will bring that humbleness and humility to the ticket.

G. Though Biden's name is not as well known as Clinton, all of these aforementioned qualities bring together the yin and the yang for this ticket, and that is ultimately a very respectable and admirable decision for Barack Obama.

Well, for everyone who claims that the VP has no power….that may be true. But do they have influence? Ask Dick Cheney that question!

As for Obama…..another flip-flop. Sure, the supporters will be the first to know, via text messages…..but no, they post it on-line first. Way to stick to your promises! I

As for Biden, I think he has more qualifications to be president than Obama. So it may backfire, because I think it may really highlight the weaknesses that Obama has. And it certainly isn't the change he promised.

That all being said, the thought of a McCain/Romney ticket will probably lead me to Obama/Biden on election day.

No matter what choice Sen Obama made, millions would have been unhappy today. There is NO ONE that can make ALL Americans happy. Sen Obama is running for president of the United States, not president of far left democrats. I wish people would just shut up with all this non-sense about Sen Obama not being for change because he chose Sen Biden as his running mate. He wants to create a balanced administration using the best minds that US politics has to offer. He has stated this over and over. He also needs someone he can trust, and everyone has to agree that he couldn't possibly trust Hillary Clinton as a running mate. She wants to be president too bad to take second seat.
Sen Obama is genuinely trying to do right by the American people. We all said we like him but he needs more experience. Well he can't magically gain that "experience" overnight, so he chose a running mate with that "experience" we claim we want. Stop being retarded America, please. Democrats need to make up their mind what we really want so that president Obama can lead us toward that goal. Ask yourself, isn't Biden better than McCain? If so, why complain?
Like it or not, we cannot abolish republicans. Nor can we disregard their views, needs and concerns. They are Americans. In order for America to rise up out of this quagmire we're in, we need to work together. Obama and Biden have the position and power to make both republican and democratic voices heard.
On the other hand, if we allow Obama and Biden to loose, this country will continue to be one-sided, with democratic ideals falling by the wayside as usual. Sen McCain has no desire or need to fulfill any democratic agendas. So don't allow face-value dislike, sexism, fear, or a silly text-message debacle to impede reasoning skills and the view of the big picture

It's interesting to see the "change" people claim to want a VP choice that's even younger and less experienced than Obama. Remember that being president isn't primarily about creating powerful symbols; it's primarily about making policy choices and persuading Congress to go along with you. Obama doesn't have the depth of policy knowledge or Congressional connections to do well in either. Biden is an excellent choice because he has the knowledge and connections to carry out the policies of change that Obama sets. Wake up, folks, this is about governing, not about electioneering. Obama's first presidential decision has been bold and wise. I'm more enthused now than I was before.

jaime facchino   August 23rd, 2008 6:19 am ET

i have been very open about voting this year, but i have been more turned off by the hypocricy i see in obama supporters buy constantly hearing… 'ANOTHER OLD WHITE GUY.' … you are voting/picking obama because he is the man of change and not "mcsame" who is a republican that "immitates" pres bush, yet you make racist comments about my people.. white men, you scream at the top of your lungs when white people say racist comments, yet you do the same. that is called hypocricy. i think obama is NOT the man of change as his 1st real presidential decision was picking sen biden. he only picked him for political purposes and not what is best for the country if he really wants change… his pick was ALL POLITICAL. obama is running his campain to get elected. he is telling the public/media what everyone wants to hear to get elected. he is just like mccain, but at least mccain doesn't hide behind a persona. i was hoping for a great leader to help our country — unfortunately we got two typical politicians. i will for sure not vote for obama. he is a greasy politician… "its time for a change…." my butt!!

joe m   August 23rd, 2008 6:18 am ET

the irony here is that the choice of biden is not so different from a choice made by another presidential candidate not so long ago. biden brings experience, gravitas, and credentials that the candidate needs. he rounds out what obama himself fails to bring to the table. well eight years ago another candidate, George W. Bush, was faced with a similar problem. his decision, bring in a washington insider. some would argue that this is not so much of a change after all.

JERRY   August 23rd, 2008 6:18 am ET

OBAMA, I THINK YOU ARE STUPID!!!! SUPPOSED TO BE A (CHRISTIAN) BUT YOU WANT TO STAND & SAY THAT A LIGHT FROM SOMEWHERE WILL SHINE DONE ON YOU. IF YOUR A CHRISTIAN YOU SHOULD KNOW WHERE THE LIGHT COMES FROM, YOU LEARN THAT IN BIBLE SCHOOL. YOUR AN IDIOT… IF PEOPLE WHERE SMART THEY'D GET OFF THE OBAMA NOSE CANDY. YOU HAVE NO EXPERIENCE, SOME QUESTIONABLE ETHICS. YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, YOU JUST WANT TO MAKE HISTORY,(WORRY ABOUT THE ISSUE'S NOT YOURSELF). I BELIEVE YOU ARE A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. YOU SAY & DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO GET WHAT YOU WANT! SIR YOU ARE A LIAR.

oldsoldierboy   August 23rd, 2008 6:18 am ET

An Obama/Clinton ticket would have allowed McCain to have a field day bringing up all the bad things they said about each other over the last several months. Biden was the best choice for him in this situation.

Tony, Enterprise, Alabama   August 23rd, 2008 6:10 am ET

This is the first major decision of Senator Obama?

We as Democrats are totally screwed this election cycle. Senator Biden did not win one single delegate, and Hillary Clinton won almost 50% of the popular votes and delegates.

Does Senator Obama think he is smarter than the voting public. Clearly he does. But here is a clue for him, without Hillary he cannot win!

What a complete idiot he is to make this decision! Can we stand another four years with an idiot in the White House?

With the economy so bad that the Mexicans are leaving, This pick doesn't help fixing our economy or confidence. I'm voting McCain/Romney.

I think you are going to make a serious mistake when you vote for these people: It will be a third term Bush and why do you think the economy is so dreadful? NOT because of the democrats, it's because of this incompetent republican. And now you blame the wrong people! What kind of mind twist is that?

Sheila   August 23rd, 2008 6:06 am ET

Obama's people lied to us. They said they'd text us and we'd be the first to know. Then they went ahead and leaked it to the press 5 hours before issuing the text message.

And Joe Biden lied directly to the press when he tried throwing them off the scent… he pointedly denied that he would be the Vice Presidential pick. It's one thing to stay quiet and non-committal, it's entirely another to overtly gainsay. One is coy. The other is downright dishonest.

I don't care for this Joe Biden's character very much already.

johnny   August 23rd, 2008 6:05 am ET

GREAT!! A VP candidate who also plagiarizes. Someone who loves to talk on-and-on without really saying much. A person who, as NBC journalist Chuck Todd pointed out, "Loves the sound of his own voice.".

Let's not forget Biden has been in Washington 10 years longer than McCain has. Of course, Obama is all about changing Washington, right?
Obama said, "The real gamble in this election is playing the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expecting a different result."

obama is a no more for change than his pick. actions speak louder than words. im reconsidering my vote. hillary should have been our candidate! now we have a liar and a cheat on one ticket.

Biden PROS: In the character dept., never a hint of scandal, devoted family man. Smart, knows foreign policy, experienced, knows Washington, dedicated, can look at the "big picture" with all his political and life experience.
CONS: Ok, so he has been around for a while but why throw the baby out with the bath water? Give him a chance. Obama knows he doesn't have the savvy foreign policy knowledge and Biden can offer his expertise.
Look, Biden can help Obama win by bring white males out to vote for Obama. I am sooo tired of a Republican administration….we need a change and Biden gives the country a man with a brain who can articulate his message. Can't some of you naysayers just slow down a minute and get over Biden's few negative comments about Obama during the primaries? Get over it already. I am voting Obama-Biden, and Biden's addition to the ticket tipped the scales for me.

HOWEVER…………………..

I would think that the Obama campaign would have enough common sense to send out a text message at an appropriate time—
there is something not right about waking up hard working Americans at 2:30am with a text message—
between the hours of midnight and 6am should of been a time to let us hard working people sleep—

I think the Obama campaign needs to get in touch a bit more and get off their high horse—

I did sign up for the text message of my own free will–but honestly I never thought they would be stupid enough to wake people up—

A disappointing choice, to say the least. However… as a loyal male Dem who very much wanted Hillary to be the candidate, I understand how critical it is that McCain be defeated. He stands for absolutely EVERYTHING that Hillary (and all of us) do NOT want for America, and all that Hillary, and we, do NOT believe in. So, please….. Tammy and Sandra and Daniel and Leo, ET. AL., try to take your thinking to the next higher level before you do something very destructive (meaning voting for McCain). It's clear you have the brain power to do this – if you didn't, you wouldn't have been for Hillary. We need you for 2 crucial reasons: 1) to be rid of the Bush doctrine, and 2) Hillary cannot become a member of the Cabinet if McCain wins. C'mon folks, use your heads over your hearts! Hillary herself says to do so, and knows what she's talking about!! The Democrats MUST win in November or we are in big trouble!!! Please, do not be foolish!!!!

TO: PEGGY (Hillary Supporter)

How could Hillary run a Country when she ran her own campaign into Debt? As president you would need to know how to balance the budget. (She can't). How could Hillary run a Country when she would not make critical decisions in her own campaign? As president you would need to be ready to make critical decisions (She can't). How could she run a Country when she selected her friends to help run her campaign who were totally bad, ineffective and useless to her instead of picking a good team to help her win? As a president you would need to rely on someone's expertise to help get things done, not friends. (She made a bad decision to rely on friends instead of picking a team with experience and their expertise to help her win ).

I voted for Clinton in the Primaries and I wanted Obama to pick her as his VP, but now I will be voting for Obama. I cannot vote for McCain BECAUSE I DO NOT WANT MY SONS TO BE DRAFTED. Say what you want about Obama, but one thing I am impressed with is how he is running a very good campaign especially with the obstacle as being an African American candidate. Peggy, that could be a clue to why his numbers are not higher.

Kjetil   August 23rd, 2008 5:00 am ET

I like Biden because of his experince and straight talk. I saw some debates of him yesterday at youtube and he is a straight talker and thats great. But he sometimes have a bad ending in the debates and is not too good to have a great and fast end. Im a bit negative at Biden because he did not endorse Obama, because i think lojality should matter some in politics. But anyway. I like Bidens liberal values and forregn politics position. He is not black/white and a warhunger as McShame.

Grizzly Bowman   August 23rd, 2008 4:59 am ET

This was a foolish, naive decision for the Obama camp. I have been for an Obama Presidency since a short time after he entered the Illinois legislature (I was a long, long time Southern Illinois resident).

Barack seemed honest until the '08 Primary was over, then he went into super-vague mode. His speech on racism was his last dead-on, hard-hitting moment.

After the primaries, 90% of what Obama says sounds like this: "If you don't make 5 million dollars a year and you're not disenfranchised and feeling betrayed and used to the point of vomiting at our faux Democratic process: Yes we can create jobs; yes we can buy hybrids with what's left in our pockets after the oil crisis—fancy lint, we'll say; JOHN MCCAIN IS GEORGE BUSH! McCain = Bush! John's got Cindy, but he's into a different "bush", if you get my drift; that's right, he's a cheater ….Oh, and people want someone in Washington saying things for them they'd like to hear! Now, lemme tell you about my trip to Berlin. I think most of the 200 thousand that showed up could fit into John McCain's houses…"

Okay, so it would actually be great if Obama did sound like that, but to the point: Granted, Hillary's speeches didn't reveal much concrete data on what her Presidential policies would actually be either, but people like her and people are energized and enthused to see her and hear her speak. Popularity goes a long way in elections. People know they're going to get screwed no matter who's running due to the Electoral College and the truth that Politicians lie plenty. What does that leave for voters? Mild amusement, that's what.

Joe Biden is the least exciting pick Obama could have possibly made. Dave Barry warned that office furniture causes brain shrinkage. I guess furniture in the Senate carries the curse too. I'm a Realist though so I'd venture a scientific hypothesis and instead say that the Senate is infested with brain parasites. Really, Joe Biden?

Please flip-flop again and pick Hillary instead.

Muyoyeta   August 23rd, 2008 4:57 am ET

It's hard to satisfy every blogger. Whatever Obama's veep pick, there still would have existed some people not happy with his choice.

Why would you vote for Mccain and not Obama just because Hillary hasn't been put on the ticket as Veep. Do you vote for personalities or policies? You are the same people who would have accused Obama fro playing politics if he had put Hillary on the ticket. It's about someone you think will do the job and who you will be able to work with. I really don't think Obama would have been able to be in a good workring relationship with Hillary. There would have been some fightings in the background which would have made governing very impossible for Obama.
About the 'Change' argument, we all know that Obama needed somebody with lots of foreign relations experience and Biden is the best pick. We all know that Hillary's foreign experience resume was found wanting during the primaries and the GOP would have capitalised on that. Already the GOP are trying to attach Biden alleging he himself had highlighted Obama's lack of experinece. Imagine what would have happened had Hillary been on the ticket. How would she had been able to defend Obama on negative issues that she had used to attack him?

I'm in Australia and I reckon Biden is the best choice Obama has made of his veep. People go vote for this guy if you are truly honest with your conscience!

AOA Seattle   August 23rd, 2008 4:57 am ET

Is it just me or does Biden seem to really scares Republicans…. watch fox for a few minuutes to get an idea..

John King…way to go blubber-mouth…I always sensed there was something about you but could never put my finger on it…. No journalistic integrity at all…Now I know.

A vote for change? LOL Yeah right! Same old politics as usual.

No McWar machine   August 23rd, 2008 4:53 am ET

Believe me
No matter who Obama's choice for vp would be there will be people that had their better pick, threatening not to vote ,complaining , and you name it.

If you want Nader ,still fallowing Hillary "I dont know where she is going" or 4 more years of more McBush and war hop to it .

Obama's train is leaving the station whether you are on it or off of it and like his choice or not Biden is Obama's VP …………

Kevin   August 23rd, 2008 4:51 am ET

Obama had the chance to make double history being the first African American President and makiing Hillary Clinton the first female VP but in the end it was all about him as usual. He shows no respect for anyone. Hope he loses big time.

BlueDog Dem   August 23rd, 2008 4:46 am ET

Clearly these PUMAS are experiencing their first campaign….

Yeah… a party has a wide variety of people and positions in it. I suggest that before you all sit at home or vote for McSame…you do a little research instead of threatening on these blogs and decide which is the best way for you to politically proceed.

If you think that you would be really better off (Supreme Court Justices…tax breaks for the wealthy…more war..Iran..Russia..McCain's draft of your young daughters and sons) sitting home on election day or voting for the Republicans…you were never a Democrat to begin with…good riddance…

Best choice, Sen. Obama choose a man with the years of experience in foreign policy. And the Senator is always open to listen to advice. Joe will help him in a big way. Sorry Hillary lovers, she was out for her own. Having said that, I do think she will do well in a position in the Obama adminintration.

FLorida Daryl   August 23rd, 2008 4:37 am ET

WOMEN FOR THE GOP!!!! Isn't that illegal.

DO NOT buy into the same failed policies of our last EIGHT years of life in America. It is time to Change our direction straight out of the Bushes and towards a better America.

Women for the GOP— If you were a Hilary Supporter and are now voting for McCain— That doesn't even make sense….. no really it doesn't…… really… think about it….it doesn't make sense… no it doesn't… what you're angry… sooo what….My brother works two jobs… he has to eat doesn't he…

I hope YOU weren't placing MY Future in the hands of Hilary just because she is an outstanding 'woman'—- IF SO— YOU are irresponsible and selfish… just as one would be if they just vote for Obama because he's 'black'—or against him because he's 'black'.

Smell the coffee or listen to your grumbling bank account— Running our country isn't always going to be about politics. Bush played politics in favor of BIG business and to an ideology known as "Virtually NO Regulations"— and we see what happened and is still happening.

Biden is Obama's compliment— Biden gives few punches tooo :)

I'm saying that things are going to CHANGE— and the only way that is going to happen is if we change the policies we've been using (THEY SUCK and aren't working well—–someone tell McCain that and perhaps I'll vote for him.

OBAMA/ BIDEN 08!!!!! :)

Tom   August 23rd, 2008 4:35 am ET

I'm sorry, but I find PUMA comments hysterical. And good choice for VP! Tammy has made me laugh hysterically. Thanks!

SD   August 23rd, 2008 4:34 am ET

There go millions of votes away from B Obama. I am sending my hundred dollars to pay off Hillary's debt and abstaining from presidential election and democratic party funding — I don't need to vote McCain or Obama, and have that bad feeling on my conscience. I will vote to keep the democratic house and senate majority to keep McCain in check. Never mind republican control of the presidency — we have checks and balances :)

cbkentucky   August 23rd, 2008 4:32 am ET

I can not believe that he pick Biden, well I know I am not voting for Barack now.. So much for change. I wish there was way to still vote for Hillary.. We are in so much trouble now.

J. McCaskill, Mississippi   August 23rd, 2008 4:30 am ET

Sad election cycle for the democrats. An election set up basically for them to win and they will lose becuase they failed to nominate the better candidate and put hot air, emotion, and inexperience over sound, specific, and experience work in Hillary Clinton. If Obama is elected, it will be a very sad day for America.

Hillary Clinton for President
John McCain for right now.

spruzzi   August 23rd, 2008 4:29 am ET

Well, well, well…..I'm so disappointed I have no words. Poor America! I'm leaving the country. It's hopeless now! Hillary should leave, too. She deserves better.

Curt W   August 23rd, 2008 4:28 am ET

Attn Clinton Supporters: Are u serious? i just read the comments from all the Clinton supporters saying they'll switch parties now that Sen Obama has chosen Joe Biden as his VP. First of all Obama and Hillary have a 90% similar voting record. Hillary and McCain: 30%. i mean come on don't sacrefice the well being of the nation for your own pride. Hillary is a great leader but she wasn't picked now pick the guy who shares most of her ideals. And secondly, she'll no doubt be a member of his cabinet which enables her to potentially have even more influence than has his VP. So come on, voting for McOld won't bring Hillary back. Make the choice with ur head not ur pride.

I still do not want to vote for Obama, so I'll waste my vote and vote for Hillary. It won't be wasted because I will at least know I did not settle for the lesser of two evils. I will be able to say, "don't blame me, I voted for Hillary."

Al   August 23rd, 2008 4:28 am ET

I love the Clinton supporters talking about voting for McCain and then Hillary in 2012

Dont you think if Hillary and her supporters continue to mess around and divide the party, that people wont remember? She would have zero chance for being picked in 2012

Hey Kool Aid drinkers…hate to rain on your parade….But Biden is a very close friend of Johnny Mac he even suggested they run together…They both share the exact same Iraq policy(voted for it, both wanted surge) So he wont attack him…Lets not forget that Biden ripped Bambi during the primaries no experience etc. …This was his most important decision….he utterly blew it…..On multiple fronts….The only chance Obama/Biden wins would be if it was Biden/Obama

Rosemarie Lee   August 23rd, 2008 4:24 am ET

I will not be voting for Obama since he did not pick Hillary….He made a bad choice and not taking anything away from biden, but Obama really needed every vote Hillary was holding.

Mitch   August 23rd, 2008 4:24 am ET

TERRIBLE CHOICE. How can someone who's crafted their campaign message around change pick someone who represents the antithesis of change? Barack had youth and the lack of Washington stain going for him as something to contrast McCain. By picking Biden, that all gets washed away. How can he run a campaign of pinning McCain as the same old thing when his VP is the same old thing? And Biden puts his foot in his mouth more than W. The democrats just lost whatever advantage they had in the fall. Leave it to them to find a way to lose and election that was handed to them on a silver platter. Pathetic. So this is the change we've been waiting for, huh? He picks the only Washington insider that has more time in Washington than McCain. Laughable.

Bunch of losers   August 23rd, 2008 4:18 am ET

People who do not like the choice do you guys know any thing about Biden? You seem to just hate any choice except what you have on your mind. World is made of lot of wise people. Someone with so much experience will be good for your country but you guys seem to always like stupid 'one liner' persons like Bush – I guess your IQ level is same as his so you like some one who does answers with out thinking.

sandra-california   August 23rd, 2008 4:17 am ET

I GUESS U CANNOT CALL MCCAIN OLD ANYMORE BECAUSE BIDEN IS RIGHT THERE TOO, BUT MCCAIN IS THE BETTER CHOICE ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, FL   August 23rd, 2008 4:16 am ET

Ugh, I seriously hope this is all misdirection or a case of "Dewey Defeats Truman" because Biden is an absolutely horrible pick. He's a typical career Washington politician, is in the pocket of the credit industry, heavily supports the War on Drugs, was pro-Iraq War until it became politcally convenient to be against it… too many negatives, really

Yeah, he's a good attack dog, I guess, and he brings "foreign policy cred" to the ticket but… ugh. Neither of those make up for his boundless negatives.

Micheal   August 23rd, 2008 4:13 am ET

This ticket sounds alot like Osama-BinlaDen now!. And I am absolutely not going to vote for this ticket!. Maybe the terrorist guy is his mentor.

Is this a "Change we can believe in" when a senator who has been serving in Washington longer than of what John Mccain has been serving was selected as a VP?. Obama does really know how to speak and fool people very well!. Wake up Democrats!

Dwight D. Mahabir   August 23rd, 2008 4:12 am ET

Suppose John McCain is truly the Manchurian Candidate. He was in captivity long enough to be brain washed. He does appear to be out of touch with the American people.

Thanks
Dwight

Out In Left Field   August 23rd, 2008 4:12 am ET

OMG!… Joe Biden? You've got to be kidding me. Obama just gave McCain a warehouse of recordings, video and sound-bites to use in his political commercials against Barack that will dismantle Obama's
"Change We Can Believe In" and, "A New Kind of Politics" theme. Obama has just derailed his own express train to the White House by calling on Biden (Mr. Washington Insider) as his V.P. selection. What a shame.

michelle   August 23rd, 2008 4:12 am ET

Biden wasn't my choice for VP either. But that doesn't mean I am foolish enough not to vote. That's just plain stupid. Of course I would not vote for the warmonger either. If he wins say goodbye boys because the draft is coming.

Ken   August 23rd, 2008 4:07 am ET

Very bad move! Like so many of Hillary Clinton supporters, the democrats have lost another vote and instead of not voting, I plan on voting for McCain. To help the republicans beat Obama

Obama said he would be a different type of politician, well he just proved to many that he is just anyone else in politics. He will say anything just to get his way. WHAT A JOKE!

He should have chosen Hillary Clinton, for he will find out in November that he IS NOT going to win, but lose to McCain.

Disappointed Democrat   August 23rd, 2008 4:06 am ET

This was Obama's election to win, if he played his cards right, but he didn't. He should have done what it takes to unite the Democratic Party, and that meant choosing the best candidate for VP–and the one who won the majority of the popular vote–Hillary.

Remember, Obama–you CHOSE to lose when you could've won!

rob kole   August 23rd, 2008 4:02 am ET

So how long does it take to become part of the old washington politics? When your numbers go down and you will do anything to win.

I can see it now " Senator Biden during your run for President you stated that Obama was not ready to be president yet now by accepting the VP position you are infering he is ready. Can you please explain what happened during the last 8 months that changed your mind?

Answer DNC and Obama didn't want Hillary and there was no one else.

And general comment about more of Bush if you vote for McCain can anyone really tell me that Bush did anything on his own during his 8 years? At least McCain well speak/ decisde for himself rahter than just being a figurehead.

Victoria Francis   August 23rd, 2008 4:01 am ET

Barack Obama really wants to win so badly that he would choose a Washington insider who continually puts his foot in his mouth. However, Biden has been an excellent Senator for many years and should stay there.

MikePhilly   August 23rd, 2008 3:56 am ET

I got the text….and I immediately unsubscribed from future text messages. Much like I unsubscribed from the DCCC's e-mail lists and that of Obama's campaign. I also re-registered as an Independent. I don't want to be part of another heartbreak. Not after what we went through in 2000 and 2004. I know a lot of people are sick of hearing about Hillary Clinton–and maybe Biden will be a better VP–but she was our only sure-fire ticket to the White House. Not choosing her is a recipe for potential disaster.

Daniel   August 23rd, 2008 3:56 am ET

Bad Move O! Just convinced me to vote for McCain!

Kevin   August 23rd, 2008 3:56 am ET

What turns American voters off in this country is the 'establishment' decides whats good for everyone and not what the American people really want. If the American people really wanted Biden in the top spot, they would have voted him there. He got little votes in the primary and dropped out, early in the race. The primary became exciting for voters because of the close race of Clinton and Obama, not Biden. I am a Hillary supporter and very dissapointed in Obama for not picking her. Hillary supporters do not know Biden. Capitol Hill does, but does any hard working American voter know this guy? This just shows Obama is lacking something, to pick this guy no American voter knows about. On a campaign of 'change and new direction', why pick old and established (not to mention a boring old white guy and the Rush L of the Dem party), Bill Richardson would have been a better pick if not Hillary. At least the new upcoming American majority (Latinos) can relate. Is picking Biden somehow going to convert those McCain dissatified right wingers to vote for Obama? Hillary supporters are 'gun ho' and ready to back this pair of the 'new and old' establishments? Maybe Biden can dress a bit hip and make commercial segments for the young MTV crowd. The Dems now have a chance to really lose this election, the polls between Obama and McCain have been close, this choice may have cost Obama what little lead he had left. I just might not vote at all this year and stay home. Not a happy Democratic camper…………………

DFoster Georgia   August 23rd, 2008 3:51 am ET

It's amazes me the way people try to make Obama out to be the bad guy for not picking Hillary. Have you ever thought that maybe she didn't want the job … she said it Friday. Maybe she and Obama already had that conversation. Seeing that she's been noticably abcent over the past couple of months that should give you idiots a clue. If you wanted a job would you ignor the person doing the hiring? You would if you already told him you weren't interested. There really isn't anything to read into here. He moved on to his next best pick. PUMA's get over it. You are blaming Obama for decisions that Hillary herself made long ago.

And what is James Carville thinking? Obama doesn't need Hillary's input on who his VP should be. I mean … that's such a stupid comment.

And yes … she was on his short list. She erased her name … not Obama.

J Rivas   August 23rd, 2008 3:50 am ET

What people fail to realize is that what really matters is if those democrats in 3 key states go out and vote…(Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida) I will not vote this election out of protest because i really dislike both of the cabdidates…I really dislike Biden as VP. But my vote holds less sway because i live in California which is solidly Democratic. My vote will not have an impact like Dems in those 3 states…
In an election where we should have won in a landslide, Democrats failed again Dukakis-Biden 08..Im sorry, i mean Obama-Biden NEVER!!!

Steve   August 23rd, 2008 3:50 am ET

Wow!! Thanks Obama, I signed up on your website to get that special email… whatever. The text message idea was bad for this main reason:
1) If you had any guts at all you should have held a press conference and announced it to the world. When an individual has some important news for someone they usually deliver it in person or by calling and not in an email or text! Did you get the idea from watching kids texting each other at the mall? Seems like you have lost all momentum and you cant even control your staffers anymore.
As for Biden, he seems to be your biggest rival and critic. Where is the logic? I am absolutely confused on who is advising you. The Democrats are going to have a fun convention for sure!! God Bless.

Sara   August 23rd, 2008 3:49 am ET

Great choice! A good blend of vision and experience that will help get our country back on track. I'm sure Hillary will also be part of this administration in another capacity. She has lots to offer.

Spider   August 23rd, 2008 3:49 am ET

Anyone else find this funny?

The "Internet President" promised us change. He was gonna let us common folk know about his VP selection via text message and e-mail prior to everyone else knowing it. That claim of change didn't happen. Will any of his hopeful changes occur? I'd be angry if I'd donated to his campaign so I'd get this "insider" information before anyone else and everyone else knew it before I got my text message.

Laird in Austin, TX   August 23rd, 2008 3:49 am ET

It truly saddens me that so many Hillary supporters are harboring such animosity toward Obama. Early in the primaries, I was tossed up between Obama and Clinton (after my candidate Bill Richardson left the race) because they were so similar on the issues. Honestly, their differences on the issues were very subtle.

As the primaries unfolded, it started to become clear to me that the difference between them was character and integrity.

The Clintons were very hateful and divisive, and what bothered me most was the way Hillary padded her resume and diminished Obama's. Hillary does have slightly more experience than Obama, but truly saying that everything she has done in the 35 years since she left college has prepared her for the presidency is such a stretch. Obama may have been in the senate for only a short time, but the type of work he has done since he left college seems to be right on track with what the country needs right now. And then the sniper fire lie just made me think "wow, lying comes so naturally to her that she even embellishes something like this which doesn't even matter. How can I trust her to tell the truth about important issues?'

Listen, I enjoyed the Bill Clinton years, and I thought he was a good president. But Hillary is not bill, and the times are changing. Obama is what we need right now. And again, it is his integrity and character which impresses me above all else.

If you got all of your information from Hillary and that is the basis for what you believe about Obama, then it is seriously time for a fact check Why don't you look into him yourself?

I'll leave you with this thought: Mark Twain once said "Anger is an acid which does more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured". This country is at a critical juncture. Please put aside your hurt feelings and think this through. What would Hillary do? Oh, that's right, she's voting for Obama.

Kelley   August 23rd, 2008 3:47 am ET

I love that some of the posts on here say "Keep in mind, Hillary will have an important cabinet position". Like they know….

That is just like saying "We will get the text letting us know who he picks before anyone else knows it."

We all saw how that went.

Shanee Garner   August 23rd, 2008 3:47 am ET

As a woman, I am disgusted by people like Tammy. Say goodbye to the rights that so many women have been working for over the centuries. Haven't we lost enough. I will pray for your children and mine alike–now is the time to unite.

A republican president is a blatant sign of disrespect to Senator Clinton and all of her hard work.

Rethink it!

I thought Biden said, "I'm not the guy"! Just the other day…he said that…………Is he a "good liar" or was he "just playing politics"? Which was it? Inquiring minds want to know……………………………….

Now IM 4 McCain   August 23rd, 2008 3:43 am ET

Ouch those numbers are really gonna fall now. Hello he's been smashing you for months???? Why not pick someone who is younger???? You know " Change " He said your not ready but now he's running with you? Are you in some sort of high speed presidency for idiots program now. Sorry obama looks like you just closed the case.

Hopeless   August 23rd, 2008 3:43 am ET

What a major major disappointment! So much for change.

Sammy   August 23rd, 2008 3:40 am ET

Less than %30 approve of Bush. Yet there are still some Hillary democrats proclaiming that they want a McBush neo-con over Obama. Many of the 'never Obama' people either would never vote democrat anyways or just want to vent.

Conservative republicans will 'hold their noses' and vote McCain because they want to keep the white house. Democrats will do the same.

Kathy   August 23rd, 2008 3:39 am ET

Well Barrack, this was a huge decision and you blew it. This decision
is going to cost you the election. This is a big slap in the face to all Hillary supporters and I now will be voting for McCain.

James in Oregon   August 23rd, 2008 3:39 am ET

What a anticlimactic disappointment, as an Obama supporter from the beginning i can't understand how he could pick a veteran of the senate when he has been such an advocate of change. I think political historians will look back at this as one of the decisions which caused Obama to lose in spite of all the factors which should have allowed him to easily win

DJ in CA   August 23rd, 2008 3:38 am ET

I love Obama. I love Biden. This is the Dream Ticket for me. Life is good.

Guess what ? He didn't pick my choice for VP either! But there is no way I would ever give up my right to vote. Or vote for our famous POW warmonger! You let him win, let the draft begin!

WORD UP!   August 23rd, 2008 3:37 am ET

Whoa! Obama chose Biden to be his running mate. The race to the White House just got interesting. The division between Clinton and Obama might be a benefit for McCain in the long run, since Clinton supporters WILL probably burn Obama in NOV. Being a BRO I want Obama to win, but he just made a risky choice.

CB   August 23rd, 2008 3:37 am ET

You Hillary supporter who claim you are going to vote McCain. You are not really Hillary supporters. You are just trying to push your own female agenda, with the PUMA BULL CRAP.

FLorida Daryl   August 23rd, 2008 3:36 am ET

JESS!!! Thank you for making that point.

Obama has the message and the vision to lead the Democratic Party. ANY Democrat that is willing to follow those values and this vision is fine with me.

Ruben   August 23rd, 2008 3:35 am ET

It's a very disheartening decision. Many Democrats don't like Obama honestly but are deep supporters of someone more moderate like Hillary. Many people are saying that they are either not going to vote or are going to vote McCain due to this VP pick are voting for "Old McCain", the media darling and maverick. You have to realize that the McCain you'll be voting for is the exact opposite of what Hillary wants for this country

Now IM 4 McCain   August 23rd, 2008 3:34 am ET

Democratic party could have run away with this years election with a straight forward middle aged candidate. No they had to change history with a female or minority. What were they thinking? I am voting republican for the first time in my life! Go McCain!

Joe Ann   August 23rd, 2008 3:34 am ET

Sick and tired of HillBillary people. If they continue whinning and showing no respect for Obama people and dare dream of Hillary 2012, she will never get a chance to win.

To the PUMAs   August 23rd, 2008 3:34 am ET

To all the Hillary supporters and PUMAs out there — most of you are women, right? Presumably, women care about birth control rights and abortion issues, right? Now, which candidate do you think is more likely to overturn Roe v Wade, even make *simple birth control* more difficult to get? Very clearly, Sen. McCain. After all, as he said a few days ago, McCain wants to give a baby rights a the "moment of conception". This means that any method of birth control (like the morning-after pill, for example) that works by preventing the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall is equivalent to an abortion, and more generally, to murder in McCain's eyes.

Please understand, PUMAs, voting for McCain may satisfy your "anyone-but-Obama" feeling in the short term, but if you look a little further ahead, past November, it's very clear that by voting for McCain, you'll be voting against your own interests.

Biden is probably his best choice. No matter who is chosen, there are pros and cons for each person. There is no perfect person, and no perfect choice.

dem chick   August 23rd, 2008 3:31 am ET

I am sure this guy would do a good job, and Obama still has my vote. I am still disappointed. Obama should not let the fact that he doesn't like Hillary not let her be V.P. (the first WOMAN in that job.) I think putting a dem. back into the white house is far more important than who Barack LIKES and picks. Hillary has a lot of fans! McCain NOT winning is the issue. He should have went with Clinton.

Agnes   August 23rd, 2008 3:30 am ET

Think you now on community activist and mentor Bill Ayers of the Weatherman, that terrorist group of the 70’s, and then think on back room deals with the likes of Rezko….
All the more reason to question the intentions of Sen. Obama. Do we really know who and what his intentions are? Strong arm tactics and rampant racism. The DNC picked the weaker candidate, gave unearned votes to Obama. His weaknesses show up in his flip flops, a questionable past, and a lack of concrete history of action. How can I make an informed decision for real change based on these? All I know for sure is that he willingly attended Trinity Church for 20 years listening to hate and divisiveness, (no wonder the democrats are divided,) is the chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs with jurisdiction over NATO’s operations but didn’t call a meeting in two years, and his campaign strong armed it's way into the nomination, but hey that doesn't matter because he will change things for the better, right?

FLorida Daryl   August 23rd, 2008 3:29 am ET

Tammy—- good luck with your womens rights! — Oh and health care…. oh and by the way, check up on that war too. Perhaps McCain will get a fundamental clue during the 12 year reign of Conservatives.

Im 19 and this will be my first time voting. I am ashamed of the older Democratic folks. You're acting like babies with my very complicated future.

I think Joe Biden is an excellent choice. We can check foreign policy for the Dems.

NOTE::::: I think that some women where voting for Hillary just because she is a woman—- now that she is not the nominee many Hillary Supporters are abandoning the cause. These women were Hillarians. Now their true colors are showing. If you are a Democrat WHY would you vote for McCain in regards to the issues that face our country. PEOPLE THIS ISN"T A JOKE!!!!

This is a great choice. No matter who the V.P pick was, someone would have been unhappy about it.
The mind boggling part is all the Hillary supporters (specially women) who are willing to vote for McCain, who among other things wants to overturn Roe V Wade. It is time you guys realize what is best for the country (and the world), and move on.

Good choice, Osama, I mean, Obama!!

Pick someone who has been in the senate for decades. Encourage the issues that you are fighting against! Let Biden with his immense experience in the Senate provide that "change" away from "old politics" that you are looking for!!

Anonymous   August 23rd, 2008 3:25 am ET

Joe Biden? Well Barack you just lost the election.

Agnes   August 23rd, 2008 3:23 am ET

Change, what change and by whom? I want change, truly I do, but how will that change come and by which path? Since Sen. Obama was instilled as the DNC’s puppet over the people’s choice, can anyone tell me what the change will be? (Say what you must but Tammany Hall is live and well in Chicago and in the DNC; it’s been lurking, waiting to raise it’s ugly head since FDR.) Is this an example of the type of administration we could expect from Sen. Obama? Strong arm tactics. What a glorious way to capture the nomination. It's not about the journey but about the end results…. RIGHT? Will this be our legacy to the future?

Dora, Orlando,FL   August 23rd, 2008 3:22 am ET

Senator Biden is great candidate, but as many Hillary voters I will be voting for Sen McCain. First because Sen Biden voted for the war in Iraq the same as Hillary and Mr. Obama always talk about his judgement during his primary against Hillary. Also Mr. Obama talks about Change and against the people in Washington and Senator Biden had been in Washington for about 30 years. The third reason I would not vote for Mr. Obama is because he is not trustworthy. I think he treated Hillary and her voter without the respect that she and they deserve. His people did not have to say to the media that she never was considered for the VP position, when Mr. Obama when asked said that Hillary would be in anyone short list. He is a liar. I predict that he will need to convince a bigger group of angry Hillary voters that feel that the DNC and superdelegates stole the nomination from Hillary. If Obama lose the election he only has to blame himself and the people that told the media that Hillary was never taken into account for the VP. Good Luck with the Unity of the Party

If he was smart at all hillary would be V.P…..Obama I am affraid is all for himself and no one else. Hillary supporters were thinking he didnt want hillary because she is a washington insider..but so is Biden. What else can I say….wrong choice. WHY IS HIS NUMBERS GOING DOWN? I can tell you why. Obama is wise beyond his years, level-headed, and I believe he's the best man to lead our country right now. Biden, or no.

What is the deal? If he had picked an outsider like Kaine, all the right wingers would have been screaming about two guys with no experience. You can't have it both ways.

This is a very good choice. Look at the Republicans……McCain/Romney
TWO elitists completely out of touch with the average American.

I am the master of foreign affairs, that's why i have consistently referred to Czechoslovakia, a country which by the way does Not EXIST and of course i am an expert when it comes to Homeland Security, that is why i voted for a War in Iraq instead of full focus on Afghanistan and now Osama Bin Laden is still out there……..

So much for homeland security! So much for "i will chase Osama Bin Laden to the gates of hell."

It's all over McSame!! The perception that you are knowledgeable about foreign affairs, the notion that John McBush knows world affairs is laughable and is slowly crushing down just like your "straight talk "express. Biden is gona crush you on this side

I think it a great pick . But now Rep will have the spin .
Anyone it better than Hillary .

Oh Hill peps need get over it . And move on already.
Barack did the right thing . Biden might of in beginning said Barack was not ready .

But asked again after he dropped out if Barack ready , He said yes ,

But Hillary my god 21 debated later and to fight her ton say YES .
But to this day Hill never said sorry about her vote on war ,

Maybe she think twice . Before she gives talking points to REP

I said to my Husband long time ago . I would not want her as a VP either .
How negative she was . NO >!!!!! . Buy the way she would never picked Barack . Because every time it was asked if you two can make each other VP .
NONE of the two said nothing .
So don't even go there . GET OVER IT CRYING HILL PEPS.

Are you kidding me? You would rather have another four years of McBush and the corporate cronies than vote for B.O. It is a shame that you are so single minded that you would rather vote against your interests than vote for Obama. His and Hillary's Policies are so close that is why the primaries were so close. The shame of it is that I would have voted for Clinton if Obama had lost, because anything is better than what we have. It is a sad day when you will sell your grandchildren down the river because of sour grapes. I hope you take a look at the supreme court, social programs, health care, social security, and the constitution, just to name a few subjects that may come up in the next administration.

I understand Hillary's supporters are disappointed. But is this how you show respect for all she has worked for, by trying to make sure someone who goes against everything she stands for is elected? You understand the impact of a McCain presidency? You understand he wants Roe overturned and considers his SCOTUS ideals to be Scalia and his pupet Thomas? You understand he wants to allow corporations to run rough-shod over all the less-than-wealthy? You understand McCain wants to allow the likes of Exxon-Mobile to reap obscene profits while Americans continue to lose their jobs and homes? That he sees no problem with those who are responsible for the mortgage crisis getting huge bonuses while many Americans have to choose between heat and food for their families? Please, don't play silly, petty revenge politics with the lives of Americans hanging in the balance. For many it WILL mean life and death. Do you want to be responsible for more of Americas youth sent to Iraq and then Iran to die for his machismo fix? That is what you are insuring with this sort of rhetoric. This is way too serious for grudges, this is where we have to act like responsible adults.

And this is because Hillary isn't part of the existing system?? Wake up! Hillary would have been great but to campaign against Obama Biden is just dumb.

Do you want more scalia's, thomas's and roberts on the court?

Those are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself. Why were you going to vote for Hillary in the first place? Try thinking for a change and stop being arrogant whiners

Biden will rip McCain to shreds in foreign policy for sure. Hopefully, give the guy a seizure/stroke/heart attack (figure of speech).

I was 11000% for HIllary. But she lost, fair and sqaure. She was a strong candidate but somehow her indecisiveness and poor campaign management (with funding as well) and her 'inevitability complex' caused her downfall. I was really sad when she lost. But Obama is the guy, he's not perfect and this ticket looks really good as it covers off Obama's weaknesses.

So apparently those racist rants I see on this board are ok as well as the repeated name calling back and forth, but me submitting a comment where I give a g-rated, fair analysis of why someone who had voted for Clinton, would feel compelled to vote for McCain, is bad…

If Biden is asked about that, he can say, well, Obama has the wisdom to pick me or I picked him!

Bob Edwards from Oregon   August 23rd, 2008 2:37 am ET

I just can't wait for McCain now to pick Mitt Romney as a VP. WHY? Because I want to start telling this joke ASAP>>>>

John & Mitt joke:

Quote>"How many houses does John McCain & Mitt Romney own? uh-Google…………………………………………………………………………….it! Then get back to both of them with the actual number because neither one of them right now have the first clue to how many they do actually own." <End Quote

FAK HITLERY   August 23rd, 2008 2:37 am ET

Thank GOD it is not HITLERY! However, I have this inevitable feeling that Hitlery will TAKE the Nomination AWAY from Obama at the Convention and pick another female Hillary like politician to be VP.

ABC- ANYBODY BUT CLINTON!

Another White Head!   August 23rd, 2008 2:36 am ET

Great choice now Mc cain doesn't look so old!!!!

jake   August 23rd, 2008 2:35 am ET

So much for change. In the past two months it's been obvious Obama is not going to bring change, he's just turned into they same old politician but now that he is running with Biden, change is not only a lost cause but he is now showing us he is going against what he has been telling us all along.

It's time to reconsider John McCain. Obama has become such a HUGE let down, week after week for a months now he is looking like an empty air bag.

Oh well, McCain will win this one, there's always '12 if we decide we really want change.

Well this otta be interesting!   August 23rd, 2008 2:33 am ET

How can OBAMA spout off any comments about AGE or BAD OLD WASHINGTON INSIDERS. What CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN now that he has a running mate that has been apart of washington politics longer than Hillary. And one that plays dirty politics and runs at the mouth hitting below the belt, something OBAMA said HIS campaign will never do.

Well I hope the old GAFF MACHINE he picked takes him where he belongs BACK TO CHICAGO!!

sarb   August 23rd, 2008 2:32 am ET

so what exactly was wrong with hillary . she has been washington inside since 92 . biden has been since obiously before 1988. If it was because of clinton. The great conciliator who presumaly under stands all sides of everything no longer thinks hillary can no more disown bill than he (obama) can michelle,

PUMA…Just put a sock in it already. If you have as much gravitas as you think you do in this election, then let it be seen in November. Your constant infantile ranting right now is so annoying that it makes me want to set myself on fire rather than listen to it!

Grow up already…She lost in the game she invented. In that light, she should have made the rules more favorable to her before she came into the arena!

Now that I got that off my chest let me rejoice in this spectacular moment…

Wooohoooo, I am luvin' his choice in Biden. He will eat McWar alive and have a Dubbya chaser to wash him down!!!

Obama/Biden 08 B 4 it's 2 late!!!

WhyPunish?   August 23rd, 2008 2:32 am ET

Hi. I am from Europe and I really don't understand all of you Democrats who don't want to vote for Obama. Reading through all your comments, it's obvious that your main reason is :

——> TO PUNISH OBAMA !!!

I am sorry to be disrespectful, but irrespective of how much you dislike Obama and want to get your own back on him for not choosing Hillary as his VP or anything else …
… don't y'all think it would be better for yourself to choose what happens to you in the next years in terms of the money you'll have in your pockets, the healthcare you'll receive, as well as personal freedom and the right to privacy you gradually lost after 9/11 (patriot act, etc.) ? Why don't you choose based on issues and on what direction your country will go ? Do you really think that's less important than punishing one single person ? And by the way … what for ? He has to choose somebody he feels he can work well together with. It's a bit like a marriage. Do you want to force somebody to marry someone he or she doesn't feel comfortable with? You wouldn't want this yourself either.

It's all down hill from here!   August 23rd, 2008 2:32 am ET

Well this otta be interesting!!

Finally - Some STRONG Dems!   August 23rd, 2008 2:31 am ET

For all of you haters…

Many things were said during the primaries- we're all well aware of it. It will be interesting the response of the republican base when McCain picks Romney. Please don't forget the harsh words he sent McCain's way during the primaries. The republicans know how ignorant their base is, will contradict themselves within the same sentence, and be confident that they can get away with it. Amazing!

I like the way Biden connects with blue collar workers. I'm happy with Sen. Obama's pick. It really will go further than the election. I think Biden (and his wife who is a tdedicated eacher) does connect and gives a major contribution to the duo. Not to mention – its a great benifit having a running mate that has the leverage to be called by foreign governments during war time.

Lovin it!

GO Obama-Biden!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris, Antioch, CA   August 23rd, 2008 2:30 am ET

Good Choice.

Obama / Biden 08/12

Cheryl   August 23rd, 2008 2:29 am ET

Wow! Is this CHANGE you can believe in??? What happened to a new kind of politics? Talk about old Washington..Biden has been a Senator since he was 29 years old! Honestly though, I would rather see him as the nominee any day than Obama! Obama really shouldn't talk about John McCains age when he goes and picks someone 7 years younger!

David   August 23rd, 2008 2:28 am ET

This is a big mistake. I voted for Clinton. I will not support the ego of obama. I live in Chicago and know all about the obama's. This will kill his chances of winning.

Hillarly Has Said The Same, and Worse!   August 23rd, 2008 2:28 am ET

Well, it just goes to show, you Hillary Clinton supporters don't reason well. Senator Hillary Clinton has said the same things about Senator Obama and much, much worse!! And, for "Beth", obviously that comment made by Senator Biden was taken out of context (as is everything spoken by folks in the public), but because so many like you decided to make it into a huge deal, Senator Biden apologized to Senator Obama, who took it in stride and let it roll off his back as unimportant. The fact of the matter is, all of the descriptions he used about Senator Obama are true; he is clean, articulate, bright, and he's darn sure a very nice looking man! And, those are just a few of the many wonderful descriptions about Senator Obama.

Don't you folks have anything else to do other than spew negativity and hate on these blogs! The majority of you are the same, sad, lonely and unhappy people who post on these blogs everyday and whine when you don't get your way. You see something hateful and negative in everything that is written about Senator Obama. Try this, say your prayers and pray for some happiness in your life and the ability to accept the things that you cannot change! Now, that's Change We Can Believe In!!!

McCain Web site: The Kyl-Lieberman Amendment Designated Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps A Terrorist Organization – But Senator Obama Opposed It.

McCain implies that Obama doesn't think Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a terrorist organization. That's wrong. Before the Kyl-Lieberman amendment was introduced, Obama cosponsored a bill that called for the IRGC to be designated as "a Foreign Terrorist Operation." Obama was one of 72 cosponsors of the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act, which states (in part):

Iran Counter-Proliferation Act: The Secretary of State should designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a Foreign Terrorist Organization … and the Secretary of the Treasury should place the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists under Executive Order 13224.

The McCain campaign notes that the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act has yet to come to the floor for a vote. But that doesn't change the fact that Obama's sponsorship put him on record in favor of labeling the IRGC a terrorist organization, contrary to McCain's insinuation.

NTurner   August 23rd, 2008 2:26 am ET

Obama had one chance to unify the Democratic Party and blew it.

Obama and the DNC ran rough-shod over Party rules, 18,000,000 voters, and the best chances for November.

They do not listen, and are unworthy of support.

They shall recieve a real lesson on Party reform in November.

The Presidency is not a Dynasty... Remember Democracy?   August 23rd, 2008 2:25 am ET

Hey crazy "Hill or Die" (oh and between WWIII, the terrible economy, no healthcare we'll die one way or another) supporters? You want to punish your children, families, and even yourselves with a McCain presidency. Oh, and that is a serious punishment. I want you to understand something: HILLARY CLINTON MAY NEVER BE PRESIDENT. If you loonies think that if he loses that she will be able to run in 2012… you're crazier than I thought. What makes you think that ONE Obama supporter would vote for her? The "I told you so" arguement? I would PERSONALLY begin the "Clinton should run… and HIDE" campaign. Just remember there are MORE Obama supporters… even if its just by 1. And we're not going to be so gracious if it comes to your turn. Just remember that.

McCain has no original thought in his head.   August 23rd, 2008 2:25 am ET

Tammy it is okay, we don't need you.

Jubal Muse   August 23rd, 2008 2:25 am ET

In response to Beth's posting:

Isn't this the same Joe Biden that made the following comment:
"I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy, I mean, that's a storybook, man."

You have missed a comma after the word African-American. Note that this completely changes the implication of this sentence. I would also refer you to the NAACPs defence of Biden after this allegedly racist statement.
As far as "change we can believe in". I and most thinking Americans would prefer a president or vice president willing to change his mind to adapt to conditions rather than one who "stays the course" when your course is obviously and tragically wrong, as so many of Bush/McCain's have been.

Peter   August 23rd, 2008 2:24 am ET

I sincerely (without sarcasm) wish Obama/Biden well in November. I will however, choose to exercise my right to choose neither Obama nor McCain tickets.

I stand, on my own, with Senator Clinton. I hope no one derides me for exercising my right to do so. I also hope that no amount of pleading from Clinton will dissuade me to do otherwise. Don't blame her for my unfailing loyalty.

Independent   August 23rd, 2008 2:24 am ET

Yeah, here's some "change" we can believe in……

Excerpt from news article:
"Biden, who has twice sought the White House, is a Catholic with a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.
Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, but also as head of the Judiciary Committee…
Biden, 65, was elected to the Senate at the age of 29 in 1973."

And isn't Biden the guy who just this past Wednesday was telling reporters he wasn't "the guy"? (Was he just clueless or fudging the truth?)
“You got better things to do, guys, I’m not the guy,” Biden said.
Asked where he would be on Saturday — when Barack Obama is reportedly scheduled to hold a campaign event in Springfield, Illinois, that may feature his new running mate – Biden replied, “Here,” pointing to his driveway."

The Democrats just kissed my vote bye-bye.

nkg0515   August 23rd, 2008 2:22 am ET

Face it, if Obama had picked Clinton, he wouldn't have had a chance of winning…she couldn't control her campaign expenses and now want "debt forgiveness". She should have known from the very beginning when he got the nomination that she wasn't going to be considered….Neither Clinton belongs anywhere near the White House.

Beth, I thought bloggers have their own brain, why are you posting right wing nut job talking point from fix news?
By the way change means doing things a better way regardless of who does it. And people wonder why republicans love to vote for moron!!! That’s just because that’s the way they all are… McCain is dumb just like Bush, yet you people just can't wait to vote for him even after 8 years of ruin caused by another dumb republican.
I can’t wait for Biden to jump of the right wing propaganda machine and chew them up.
OBAMA/BIDEN 08,12

Thank you Mr. Obama for the slap in the face you have given Hilary Clinton and the 18 million of us who voted for her. Your decision will cost you the election. Staying home election night sounds good right about now…..

tammy   August 23rd, 2008 2:20 am ET

Obama-Biden won't be getting my vote. I now see no difference between McCain and Biden. I don't like Obama. Therefore, I will vote probably vote for McCain.

DannyJ   August 23rd, 2008 2:20 am ET

I think its a mistake to pick someone that's more qualified than the presidential nominee.

Katie   August 23rd, 2008 2:19 am ET

Well said Sneaky Pete.

This country is ready for change, and Obama, Biden and Hillary will ALL be a part of it.

Independent from FL   August 23rd, 2008 2:19 am ET

Obama must not like Clinton….She was even vetted for VP.

Shaking my head   August 23rd, 2008 2:17 am ET

So the VP would be more qualified to be President than the President, and this makes sense how? Especially since the VP has been very vocal that Obama isn't ready for the job.

gio   August 23rd, 2008 2:17 am ET

As a democrat I am sad to see my party loose again. Biden is a good guy but plain and boring as they come.

With the economy so bad that the Mexicans are leaving, This pick doesn't help fixing our economy or confidence. I'm voting McCain/Romney.

I couldn't be happier!
I have been praying for this. Biden will rip McCain into pieces!
Both of them represent the change that I can certainly believe in.
This is the beginning of better America. Wow! I am so excited! I can't wait to tell Hillary.

Jayson   August 23rd, 2008 2:15 am ET

To anyone angry enough to switch from Obama to McCain due to VP choice:
VP's don't dictate presidential policy. From one voter to another, I would hope you vote in November, and I hope you vote for issues (whatever they may be) which you care about. Would you really be true to yourself/your beliefs if you switched your vote just because Clinton does or does not make it on the ballot as VP? A vote cast in spite is a wasted vote! Vote for the issues you care about, not out of spite.

Elissy   August 23rd, 2008 2:14 am ET

I think he was the best choice.

Don   August 23rd, 2008 2:14 am ET

Very well balanced ticket, i like :D

Bruce   August 23rd, 2008 2:13 am ET

This is the beginning of the end for John McSame. An Obama-Biden ticket is simply UNSTOPPABLE

Nate Hopkins   August 23rd, 2008 2:13 am ET

Well congratulations to Sen. Obama. He just lost the election. And he has proved with his choice that is clearly not ready to lead this country.

Well done President McCain!! You have hollow shoes to fill, I only hope for the US and the world you can divine the true meaning of "speak softly and carry a big stick."

Lucy Oaks   August 23rd, 2008 2:12 am ET

I am very disappointed in this choice. I view Biden as rather arrogant but I suppose he must bring something to the ticket. I hoped all along he might choose Hillary Clinton or someone who would appeal to people Obama does not appeal to. I do not think Biden is the one to do that. I sincerely hope I am wrong.

so happy   August 23rd, 2008 2:12 am ET

ye, yes, yes and yes we can and we will win!

Kay   August 23rd, 2008 2:10 am ET

Obama calls this good judgment? This is change? A 6 TERM SENATOR?! If this is indicative of the kind of president he'll make…then maybe he's not ready to be president after all. Way to attract the youth vote, the southern vote, the blue collar vote! Pick a northerner from a state you'll win anyway (with a whopping three electoral votes), who's already suffered two aneurysms! Let's hear it for the sound judgment of Mr. Obama! ….Oh dear God, please let this be a hoax.

Not This Time   August 23rd, 2008 2:10 am ET

Great choice and the one I was hoping for. I've always liked Biden and think he will make a wonderful V.P. Biden will make mincemeat out of McCain by highlighting his connection to Bush and rip him to shreds.

Oh! bama/Biden '08!

Obama/Biden 08   August 23rd, 2008 2:10 am ET

It's about time. At least Biden will be the one to attack the Republican party with full force! Now let's go DEFEAT the policies of George W Bush

Stefan Crane   August 23rd, 2008 2:09 am ET

With this announcement: I think many Dems are going to pull the lever for McCain or cancel both parties out by voting INDEPENDENT.

Shame Clinton wasn't chosen. All for the best I suppose: I pray she'll be in the White House in eight years.

Change is a positive thing. It leads to progress.   August 23rd, 2008 2:09 am ET

I can only see three reasons why someone who voted for Clinton in the Primaries would pull a 180 and go and vote for McCain in the General Election:

1. They were never really Democrats in the first place, just female Republicans who were willing to vote gender over beliefs if it meant getting a women in the White House. This group would've never voted for Obama (or any other Democrat aside from Clinton) anyways so I really don't see why he would even ponder pandering to them by picking Clinton.

2. They are feminists (comprising of women & gay men). And don't think this is a slam on women or gay people because it's not, I just know too many women and gay men who are admitted feminists and are threatening to vote for McCain purely out of spite. This group would vote for Obama, but only with the precondition that he choose Clinton his V.P. This group is a lost cause in trying to please as they comprise of approximately the same number of people who would stop supporting Obama, if Clinton were on the ticket! Again not worth pandering to.

3. They are racist. This group would never ever consider voting for Obama anyways and probably only voted for Clinton because she stood the best shot of beating Obama in the first place. This group is definitly not worth pandering to, and if any of you "disgrace for human beings" are reading this, I urge, no I beg you to leave the Democratic Party for good and move over to the Dark Side (the Republicans). They can have you.

Cole   August 23rd, 2008 2:09 am ET

Sorry Biden but you couldn't even get 1% of the vote. You have never run a business or a state and you have more of a problem with the truth than Hillary. We're going with McCain/Rpmney.

John   August 23rd, 2008 2:09 am ET

I can not believe that Joe Biden is Obama's VP choice. If he had any hope of bringing disgusted Republicans on board…he just lost them. I am so disappointed. Unbelievable!

Patriot   August 23rd, 2008 2:09 am ET

Scoring the Votes

He said that he had "a perfect voting record from organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion." But we called both of those groups, and they told us they don't even release congressional scorecards. In fact, the American Legion's constitution prohibits it.

The veteran in this exchange was also wrong in saying McCain doesn't have a perfect voting record with the VFW (since such a record doesn't even exist). However, he is correct in that McCain doesn’t have a perfect score with DAV (Disabled American Veterans), a group of 1.3 million disabled veterans that supports more funding for veterans health care. McCain has a 20 percent record of voting the way DAV would like him to in 2006. The group is nonpartisan, but its 100 percent rankings disproportionately go to Democrats: 207 Democrats in Congress and only 13 Republicans received scores of 100 percent in 2006. Senators were evaluated on five votes for amendments that would have increased funding for veterans’ health care.

For the Hillary supporters that will now say they will not vote for Obama since he didnt pick her as VP. Keep in mind that she WILL have an important cabinet postion, and some of those positions are more important and influential than VP. Her not being picked as VP is not a reason to vote for McCain now. This could still work out VERY well for her in the long run.

An Independent Hillary   August 23rd, 2008 2:00 am ET

A Washington insider? How is this the change that Obama so vacantly endorses? What a total hypocrite. Yup, he'll make a great President for sure – NOT!

I'm voting McCain. At least we know where he stands on the issues.
