(CNN) - Joe Biden has a reputation of liking to talk, but it appears he can keep a secret.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton told CNN the Delaware Democrat was told Thursday he was the Democratic VP choice.

"He's a discreet man, we are proud to have him on the team," Burton said.

OBAMA/BIDEN'08

Biden's praise of McCain came over a year ago when McCain stood by his values. Since then he has turned a positive campaign negative as well as joined the lying republican machine. Don't think Biden would've said that praise if the McCain of today existed a year ago..

Nat, NYC   August 23rd, 2008 2:18 pm ET

Thanks God that Obama didn't choose Clinton as his VP. Now I'm sure that McCain will be our new President.

druid   August 23rd, 2008 2:17 pm ET

News media and their investigators can chew on that.

ANGIE   August 23rd, 2008 2:16 pm ET

GREAT DECISION OBAMA BIDEN IS A GREAT NICE BALANCING FOR YOU AND HIM HE MAY BE A LONG TIME IN WASHINGTON BUT HES NOT CORUPT OR CAUGHT UP IN SCANDELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LIKE MCCAIN!!!!!

Julie   August 23rd, 2008 2:14 pm ET

I may be just a kid, but I find the lack of maturity among people commenting on political articles on the internet relatively surprising.
If you want to advertise for McCain, one ought to do so on articles concerning him.

And don't use your caps lock. (Unless you really don't want to be taken seriously.)

Judy   August 23rd, 2008 2:13 pm ET

LOL, so he can keep a secret. I love it.

fafa   August 23rd, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Joe Biden, the real STRAIGHT TALK

Phaedrus   August 23rd, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Joe Biden is a thoughtful and experienced man who will do the nation proud. Great choice.

Amateur   August 23rd, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Brilliant Choice by Obama. This guy has it together. Now, to the Hillary supporters, I actually like Clinton. However to those her supporters who are crying that Hillary should be on the ticket, check Howard Fineman's piece on MSNBC. She would have said no to vetting as Obama's lawyers had to comb her and Bill's records. Also how can Obama put her when she still wants to make a statement at the convention by inserting her name. That is a paradox. You want to be someone's VP and at the same time you want a roll call of your name at the same convention. How would that work. I can bet my last dollar that if Obama was in the position Clinton was at the end of the primary, you wouldn't know today whether Obama even existed. But Clinton supporters always want it their way.

MD   August 23rd, 2008 1:47 pm ET

It is a shame that many billary distractors and operative are willing to hand over this very crucial election to the republican without considering what is at stake. i.e supreme court, economy, healthcare, international and deplomatic crisis. Billary issues in this election are very the same with Obama apart from how they will address it. As such, those billary supporters who are thinking of voting for Mcaine are doing so becuase of race not because of policy. I said it, they are either racist or stupid. using the pretences of inexprience againgst Obama is just shameful and they should really examine their own character and integrity. The whoel sexist thing in the media has nothing to do with Obama but the billary bigot wants to use that as another pretence to hide their racism against obama. there is winners and losers in elections and billary racist clowns should admit that their candidate lost and then support the winner.

Leslie   August 23rd, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Biden voted to provide Social Security to illegal immigrants he voted for the North American Free Trade Agreement NAFTA he voted in favor of the invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq. WERE not these issues the reason you slammed Hillary. You are a total disgrace to your country where you have citizenship and that is Kenya. Maybe we can deport you back there.

Jesse From PA   August 23rd, 2008 1:26 pm ET

I am not entirely sure that I can vote for Obama after this decision. It's not that I was holding out and expecting Clinton to be asked for the VP, but Biden was Obama's worst critique, and he has just done himself far more harm than good. I feel I should again vote for the second time or Nader as I did with Kerry.

Frederick Bazanye-Lutu   August 23rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

There is no doubt that Joe brings his Foreign Policy experience and to the next white house which has been clearly missing in the current administration. Together they have the ingredients to remake transform America's foreign image. I think all Americans should welcome this opportunity unless you all still want to walk around looking over your shoulders. The world will b a safer place come Feb 2009 when the new team takes over the controls at the white house.
We are all waiting for that time.

Thank you Barack

Charlotte   August 23rd, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Hillary is probably relieved to know someone with experience will be able to guide this Greenhorn. She may be able to get behind this ticket with Bidden second in command. Another Greenhorn would have made it almost impossible for her to support the ticket. I , however, will still write her name on my ballot. If that makes McCain the winner so be it. Both Bidden and Clinton and who knows how many others felt Obama was not ready for this...

Heather   August 23rd, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Biden is a good man. It would have been nice to have a good woman on the ticket, but I'll take Obama-Biden over McCain-anyone else any day.

Ulf Dahlen   August 23rd, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I think Biden is a good choice for VP. He is a good debater, has vast experience and knowledge, and will be a team-player. It's a good move by Obama.

I like the Biden pick.. However, Obama needs to hit McCain hard back in the ads questioning his age, his judgment, his memory lost, speaking gasps, and the economy. Can Mccain win by talking about the issues instead of Obama??.. NO!!!!

the problem is that as "attack dog" Biden is a good friend of McCain, needless to say, after this campaign, they no longer will be...

I don' t like either candidate... i just don't like McCain more!

in search of a true presidential candidate...

There goes change.

Obama selected the ultimate insider, 35 years in congress, the status quo.

Obama is back to same old politics. There is no change. It is all fairy tale. Obama is all gimmick.

Go McCain.

Luis   August 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

POLITICS OF CHANGE? OBAMA IS A JOKE, HE WON'T WIN. THIS MAKES HILLARY'S CHANCES OF WINNING IN 2012 MUCH MUCH BETTER. AS FOR 2008, MCCAIN ALL THE WAY.

PHYZISE   August 23rd, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel: U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel issued the following statement today following Senator Barack Obama's selection of Senator Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic Vice Presidential nominee: "Joe Biden is the right partner for Barack Obama. His many years of distinguished service to America, his seasoned judgment and his vast experience in foreign policy and national security will match up well with the unique challenges of the 21st Century. An Obama-Biden ticket is a very impressive and strong team. Biden's selection is good news for Obama and America," Hagel said.

Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar: U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar made the following statement today en route to Tbilisi. "I congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his selection of my friend, Senator Joe Biden, to be his vice-presidential running mate. I have enjoyed for many years the opportunity to work with Joe Biden to bring strong bipartisan support to United States foreign policy…"

Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter: Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter, a Republican who serves on the Judiciary Committee with Biden and often rides Amtrak with him to Washington, also offered praise. "No one on the Democratic side knows more about foreign policy than Sen. Biden," Specter said. "He's been an articulate spokesman on the subject. He also knows about domestic policy. He's been a leader on crime control."

La Raza   August 23rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I got your back Obama. Don't believe these negative comments. The smarter people will vote for you and you will be the next president of the U.S! Most of the anti-Obama nuts will believe anything they hear or read and cannot think independently. Fortunately, there are more intelligent people in the U.S. than idiots.

Art James   August 23rd, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Biden's a liar!

When Biden was asked about being chosen, he clearly lied!!!!!!!! Over and over.

He should have just been silent or said "no comment" instead of lying. We don't need another liar in the White House.

@ GARY:

In the primaries rivals will say anything! LOOK AT HOW ROMNEY AND THE REST OF THE GOP PUT DOWN MCCAIN!

gary with what you just wrote ,i feel like you don't care or don't pay attention about american politcs to call Biden or Obama flip floppers what about Mc cain ? shame any way GO Obama/Biden 08

Ged   August 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Look, Gary, in this Presidential race, McCain has tons more gaffes than Obama.

And during the primaries, you have to go on the attack against your opponents and say things which put them down, and you on top. It's a contest. That's what Biden and Hillary did to Obama, and Barack beat them both hands down.

If McCain chooses Romney, the latter once said during the primaries that McCain is the WRONG choice for he cannot possibly beat a young and charismatic Obama. Then later when McCain won, Romney changed his mind.

That's what politics is all about: PERCEPTION. Politicians campaign to make their case that they are the best, and it takes a discerning public to see through their tactics. Sadly, many of us are easily swayed by what politicians say on TV without attempting to look into their true motives: TO WIN.

thomas   August 23rd, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Great choice-anyone voting for McCain and who-ever he picks as his running mate, get what they deserve and have no right to complain when they get the same of what we've had for the last 8 years…
This Obama/Biden ticket is a great balance no matter what the pundits and Republicans will be saying. Team work is what is needed to make what was once a great country, before Bush, great again

Biden is old school, been around for decades, firmly part of the establishment, etc. Hardly a breath of fresh air.

So Barack, this is "change??" (... shrugging my shoulders).

Jacob   August 23rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Barack Obama made a huge mistake. He should have taken Hillary, as she truly demonstrated the will of the people – all 18 million of them. He stole this election, and with any luck, will get beat.

KARL   August 23rd, 2008 1:09 pm ET

As a solid supporter of Hillary Clinton, knowing that her chances of being the VP nominee were nill, I congradulate Sen Biden. I now know that in the Obama administration that if we ever go to war again it will be just, thought out, have a exit plan and be what the american people want and expect from this administration.

Sen Obama, you know have earned my vote.

Good choice Obama.
