What will Biden bring?.
What will Biden bring?.

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) - Joe Biden has served for nearly four decades as Senator from Delaware. But nowadays Delaware is a reliable Democratic state. So with Delaware already considered a safe state for Obama, what does Biden bring to the ticket in terms of the battle for electoral votes?

Two things right off the bat. Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania and the thought is that he can help Obama keep this crucial battleground state in Democratic hands.

Watch: Biden speaks his mind

Biden is also Catholic.

"“White Catholics are classic swing voters. Obama had trouble courting them in the Democratic primaries, as Hillary Clinton won the majority of their votes,” says CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider.

So the thought is that Biden could help Obama in the fight for working class and Catholic voters - voting blocs that could prove critical in several crucial battleground states this fall.

Obama made a good choice. During the primary he said that he didn't want people to be saying yes to him. He wants someone who will bring ideas to the table. Someone who will disagree with him on issue. Someone tough with good judgements. Someone with creditability. Joe Biden brings all of that to the table. Good Choice

Biden is change??? One of the longest reigning Washington insiders in the beltway. Obama is for change??? Isn't that his mantra? And he chose one of the old changeless guard? I knew Obama was full of nuthin' but hot air and this proves it. Just another liberal with nuthin' to offer but lies...just like Hillary ! ! ! I hope Biden was just another "misspeak" by just another liberal.

IT BRINGS A WASHINGTON INSIDER ON THE TICKET!
Something OBAMA said all the way through the primaries as a knock against Hillary!
Well Bidens been in washington longer than Hillary!
CHANGE MY A__.

The funniest thing about this is OBAMA (and all the obamabots)ACCUSED HILLARY of being willing to do anything to get elected!

Change you can believe in ,was just words.

Guess the DNC and Howard Dean must be really happy with Obamas choice, he was loosing before but now his loss in November is guaranteed!!! I wonder if HD is voting McCain this year.!!!!!!

Obama should change the slogan of his campaign to "INEXPERIENCE & POOR JUDGEMENT YOU CAN COUNT ON!. He sure deliveres!!!

Will wait for Hillary '12

Foreign Observer   August 23rd, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Yeah, yeah. If Obama choses an experienced guy with foreign policy credentials up to his wazoo, you shout "old politics!" "no change!" Had he picked a young guy like himself, you would yelled "no experience!" Here's the deal: you get energy and vision and an IQ of 148 with Obama and experience and tough-knuckle fight and the knowledge of how to work the government with Biden. Knock-out combo, great choice.

Raymond Duke   August 23rd, 2008 1:41 pm ET

CNN what a farce. Do you think this man who has lived in Delaware most of his life, is PRO-ABORTION is going to bring the Catholic vote to Obama. Obama the most liberal man in the whole Senate who not only believes in late term abortion but in killing them if they do survive a botched abortion. That is about as stupid as saying all catholics will vote for Obama because that nut Job Father Flagher is a priest. Man you people are really trying to put the spinon this one. What an insult to the Catholics.

King Sukumar   August 23rd, 2008 1:38 pm ET

What Obama is saying is this : Beware of my man from Delaware. Biden does not hesitate to speak his mind when necessary. He also brings in what Obama lacks by way of experience.

MavTex   August 23rd, 2008 1:35 pm ET

Excellent choice! I feel America is safer already.

McBush's only choice is to choose Lieberman. The Repugs will never vote for that flip-flop Romney and Pawlenty does nothing to shore up McDumb's ignorance on the economy and gaffe meter.

Ha! Ha! The end of the evil axis of Bush-Cheny-McSongbird!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!

Ann   August 23rd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

I guess we should start playing "Hail to the Chief" for McCain.

Obams, you lost the election.

katharine   August 23rd, 2008 1:32 pm ET

If Joe Biden has come around to support Obama, I'm on board too. Biden is smart, solid, decent, and honest. I respect his judgment. I once liked McCain too but he is not the same person he used to be- he has been corrupted by the Rovians, and that's not the politics I want. With Biden on this ticket, I will support Obama.

re:energy Are you kidding me?   August 23rd, 2008 1:28 pm ET

No woman should vote for Obama/Biden? Are you serious? So we should vote for a man who has voted against every women's issue since the beginning of time? McCain voted against equal pay, cancer screenings for low income women, affordable health care for our children. This election needs to be about the issues people. Get over your hurt feelings and vote in your own best interest. You, my friend, need to educate yourself. GO READ A BOOK!!

Clinton/McCain   August 23rd, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I'm from northeastern PA and this means nothing to me. People don't vote for the VP they vote for the president. Biden will do very little to help Obama. He will likely hurt the ticket considering that not many people voted for Biden. Biden dropped out of the race shortly after the first contest.

francee   August 23rd, 2008 1:18 pm ET

I don't recall Hillary ever saying Obama was not qualified to be president. She said she was more qualified to be president. And then for Biden to stand there and say he stands by his words...Ok who vetted this guy. Oh that's right it was Caroline Kennedy...not sure what her qualifications for picking a VP are, other than he last name. God only knows what else Biden has said and done that will come to light. At least with Hillary all of the dirt was out there.

Sue   August 23rd, 2008 1:17 pm ET

Obama didn't listen–maybe he'll listen at the convention.

Nile Kinnock   August 23rd, 2008 1:14 pm ET

What Biden brings is an extraordinary ability to lift words from other peoples speeches and make then his own. LOL-1988-How do you think Susan Estrich got promoted to Dukakis campaign manager?

Unfortunately, that will not help Obama when Obama has to actually think on his feet during the debate.

This will be a shot in the arm for about a week, and then people will realize a guy like Biden is more of the old Washington politics than pretty much anyone else Obama could have picked.

Vince   August 23rd, 2008 1:12 pm ET

I'm sorry, but I just don't see how Barrack Obama is guilty the above two statements. Obama ran a very clean and fair primary campaign, Clinton was the one who started into the negative attacks and mudslinging. I haven't seen one instance where Obama actively encouraged gender based discrimination.

Clinton was the odds-on favorite at the very start of the campaign season back in 2007. She had name recognition and a large group of followers. By all rights she should have won the nomination before it ever got started. But she blew it. Obama started out as "that black guy who's running for president" and he ran an efficient campaign that won him this nomination. Clinton on the other hand, couldn't close the deal, it's like having a 4 touchdown lead going into the 4th quarter of a football game and losing in the last five minutes. If she hadn't blown it in the primaries she would have blown it in the general election and then we'd be stuck with another 4 years of bushwhacking.

Obama isn't Muslum. He was never a Muslim. You are slapping the false rumors that are floating because you can't find a good reason to dislike Obama. Everyone with intelligence has read from credible news sources that Obama was born to a Muslim father, but he was a non-practicing Muslim. His mother remarried a man who was Muslim and when to a Muslim country, but he was not brought into the religion by his step father nor was he educated in a Muslim school. The one factor of his life is he has seen more of the world than most of us have.

I have a lot a very good Muslim friends and I understand and admire their religion. But facts are facts. Obama isn't a Muslim, never was a Muslim and won't be a Muslim. Deal with it.

As a 50 yr old white woma, I am a very proud supporter of Obama who is a GREAT CHAMPION of women's rights. His choice of Biden as VP is a very good one & I expect he'll have a very diverse & extremely capable cabinet. Obama is a President every woman should support.

McCain has proven himself to be the most anti-woman candidate in history – both politically & personally. He has consistantly shown that he has no respect for women – (example – leaving his wife for a rich, plastic "trophy"and then calling the trophy a "c" in public). This jerk shows all the signs of being an abuser. I find it hard to believe that Cindy hurt her arm shaking hands – sounds like the excuses for injuries I've heard from every abused woman I've ever met (including my mother.) Any woman who votes for McCain is voting AGAINST women!!!

To energy: Sen. Clinton was treated like any other candidate. To expect a candidate to be treated like they are special just because of their sex is a dream. I know Sen. Obama will be getting the vote from practically every woman I know. Let's face it, things have to change in this country and Sen. McCain is not the guy to do it. Plus, I believe Sen. Obama has Huge and Wonderful things in store for Sen. Clinton: Secretary of State, Attorney General, Secretary of Health,Supreme Court Justice. The possibilities are endless and great. And what can McCain do for women except use them as doormats. Think about it.

To put it frankly, Senator McCain is showing the signs of being too old for the gig, and his recent history of forgetting things (whether simple details like the number of houses he owns, or more complicated facts like Sunni vs. Shia) ought to be the source of some serious panic inside the Republican loop - far more panic, by the way, than is being generated by the prospect of a pro-choice running mate.

What Biden doesn't bring is Hillary's supporters. She has been roundly snubbed by Obama – even though she went out and campaigned with him (and apparently is going to keep campaigning for him). Obama can't stand having her around because she is popular (a threat) and she outperformed him in the final three debates (when the press started asking Obama hard questions finally) and in the final 10 primary contests. So Obama is pretty threatened by her and is excluding her... except he wants her supporters for vote for him (just shut up and vote).

Willa-PA   August 23rd, 2008 11:38 am ET

Biden brings a lot to this election. He'll echo Mccain's message all along that Obama is not ready to be president. stan   August 23rd, 2008 11:18 am ET

hehe, wow, you gotta give it to Obama, the man is sliiiiick.

Biden is right to obama's left. This is just ridiculous. Biden voted for Iraq war, Obama against. Biden has the Catholic view of life and abortion, Obama, well, nothing definitive. But he'll talk around his position for 15 minutes.

Obama, first term senator and Biden has been Delawares senator for the last quarter century. So you can see how he represents change, hehe.

Seems to be an attempt to cover all the bases possible at any cost. Being diametric on the heavy issues is not in any way flattering at all, it simply means that those issues will remain safely divided for at least another presidential term. So, no change at all.

Mc Cain represents what America really IS, and Obama represents what America THINKS it is. Sometimes the saddest truth is the real truth.

alan   August 23rd, 2008 11:17 am ET

Will Biden really bring in any Catholic votes? He's not really a Catholic. Catholics do not, as a matter of their faith, believe in ABORTION. They BELIEVE in the unborn;s Right to Life.

There is no part of being a Catholic where you can "pick and chose" WHAT YOU WANT TO BELIEVE regarding Abortion.

Either Biden is a Catholic or he is a Christian – a person who believes in God and Jesus Christ and may or may not follow one of many different religious belief systems.

Biden is a solid choice he has far more foreign intellegence experience/ diplomacy then any other VP contender and he is tough and won't mix words. He will respond to the lies that McCain keeps putting out in his ads , like Obama is rich. Obama worked his way from nothing to get where he is, McCain's family and his wife are filthy rich

Joe Reg   August 23rd, 2008 11:13 am ET

For those with some knowledge of past and current geopolitical issues, you know that the choice of Biden on the ticket is critical specialy at a time when the perception of cold war II is at its high.

Biden will certainly help to re-energize the cold war rethoric, since he is a veteran of the foreign relation committee for many years.

McCain is out touch with average American family with about 365 houses in 13 States. Thing are going well for repubs like him.

Utility Bills etc
He is an angry old man that love WAR.
Biden will bring balance and he does have experiences.

First of all everyone is getting all out of sort because Obama chose Biden. First of all, Biden is not running for president. He is only a back-up. However, Obama can use him for his views, which to me would be helpful with Bidens knowledge on the insides Washington.

I was hoping for Hillary because I feel that there are so many out there that were wanting her on the ticket. But, things happen or a reason and I can't argue with it.

To That's Reality: Yeah, he did say that McCain was safer. However, that was then, this is now. He now feels that Obama is the better choice. He was able to work with Obama and learn more about him. So his views have "CHANGED". Sorry, That's Reality – you are going to have to come with something better than that.

By the way, Alvino – you made a excellent point!!!!!!!!!!

What do we expect Hillary to say? She has to say those things but voters understand. She was dehumanized by Obama. And that is very bad. Even Jesse Jackson received a better treatment from Mondale in 1984 than the way Obama has treated women. This is sad...

Obama's candidacy is based on discrimination based on gender. Recall that in 1984 and 1988, Jesse Jackson asked his supporters to wait for his signal before supporting either Mondale or Dukakis. Kennedy did not shake Carter's hand during the convention. But the press says little of those actyions from the men. Instead, they are focusing on if Hillary is doing her best or not.

Press: Please BE FAIR to Hillary Clinton!

I am an African American male, never cared or liked the Clinton's time in office because Bill ignored major events in Africa. I have supported and donated money to Barack and was going to vote for him till NOW. I voted Republican in 1988, because I thought Jesse Jackson was not treated fairly by the Dukakis campaing. However, the way Barack has treated the Hillary Clinton has turned me to liking the woman and standing up for women.

NO WOMAN (EXCEPT MICHELLE OBAMA, SUZZANE MALVAUEX, DONA BRAZILLE, GLORIA BOLGER, OPRAH, AND CAROLINE KENNEDY) SHOULD VOTE FOR OBAMA/BIDEN!!

Change or Lack of Confidence?   August 23rd, 2008 11:03 am ET

Obama's decision once again confirms the hypocrisy of his campaign rhetoric. This decision to pick another good old boy from capital hill is politics as usual. This has always been my problem with Obama. He doesn't have a history of change yet has managed to manipulate millions of naive HOPEfuls into believing that HE will somehow be different.

This isn't change. This is about an man who simply isn't ready to run this country. So he masterfully taps into the American pysche and picks a powerful yet empty SLOGAN to draw attention away from the obvious. This is just one of many episodes we'll watch over the next few months. Say and Do whatever you need to get yourself elected – Change or politics as usual?

And that's what America need, that used to be McCain the Maverick not anymore he has been bought and paid for, BUSH #2 compliments of the GOP.

marta   August 23rd, 2008 10:59 am ET

Biden can bring the slogan " TWO MEN , TWO HOUSES " – simple enough to let the American people realize that a MCCain / Romney ticket is the ticket by the rich , for the rich.

pj   August 23rd, 2008 10:58 am ET

Alot!
Great choice.

CognitoErgoSum   August 23rd, 2008 10:57 am ET

He brings the foreign policy and defense experience Obam's critic's say the junior Senator lacks. He balances the ticket beautifully.

Hillary Clinton only has six years senate experience on Obama, so she was laughable touting her "experience" during the primaries, compared with John McCain. He'd have eaten her alive on that.

Trannon   August 23rd, 2008 10:57 am ET

Anyone who says they are Democrats and are voting for McCain are one of two things:

1) LIARS- Some are just angry or "bitter" and will come around before November when they wake up to the fact that McWAR is going to destroy our nation one way or another.

2) HYPOCRITES- Some are just angry and will forget their principles and values just to throw away the election because THEIR candidate didn't get the nomination or veep choice.

These people will regret that when McSurge eradicates ALL hope and Russian missiles are falling on their cities.

or just

3) Racists- I can't believe how many so-called "Democrats" are saying that they can't vote for a "black person" (although most have used the famous expletive).

These same people usually call themselves "Christians"... LOL

If you are a DEMOCRAT and you don't like Obama, don't vote or write-in a choice. If you vote for MCSTAIN, you are responsible and YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.

FOUR MORE YEARS (or 8) of McBUSH policies and a likely nosedive into a Great Depression, although NEVER FEAR, it will be off-set by WORLD WAR III.

GoBama!

Andy   August 23rd, 2008 10:55 am ET

This is really a dream ticket. Biden is one of the smartest a guys out there, especially on foreign policy. It's true that he voted in favor of the Iraq war originally, but he has a long record of good decisions, so I think I can forgive that one mistake. I'd say that Obama made the right choice.

milbs   August 23rd, 2008 10:55 am ET

How friggin' long to I have to wait for CNN to "moderate" my comment?

The Other Campaign Strategist @ 115th & Amsterdam   August 23rd, 2008 10:54 am ET

When you compare all the traditional "talking points" that trouble makers would try to raise about picking someone other than Hillary, this selection renders them EMPTY.

I am so proud of Hillary's response. It shows she is truly a team player and has gotten over her defeat in the primary.

Biden with 36 yeas of experience, and as Chairman of Foriegn Relations in the Senate is superior to Hillary's number of years [and caliber] of experience ... even if you count her time as 1st lady of the US or Arkansas

Biden has run for President twice ... he's been vetted ... there won't be a skeleton in his closet.

Biden could be President if something should require it.

Unlike most Washington politicians, he returns to the real world every evening when he hops on the train to go home.

Biden is Catholic and lotsof voters in Pennsylvania and Ohio are Catholic ... Biden will genuinely connect with them.

Biden naturally connects with "blue collar", "lunch pail" Americans. Hillary worked at it and was successful. It's in Biden's DNA.

Biden is every bit as tough as any other possible VP selection. The GOP will loose in a political fights .... plus he's carefully watched John McCain since he came into the Senate. He'll know better than anyone, where McCain is vulnerable.

Finally, Biden is open to new ideas and new approaches ... you can see a "go-getter" streak in him ... he will promote Change in Washington under the stratetic leadership of Barack Obama.

Susan   August 23rd, 2008 10:54 am ET

OBAMA HAS LOST OUR VOTE NOW

Bill Cobb   August 23rd, 2008 10:53 am ET

What Change? O`bama is running on change and cites McCain`
s years in the Senate and support for the Iraq invasion as reasons
not to vote for him. So he picks a Senate colleague of McCain`s
that has been in the Senate longer, saw more of the intelligence
prior to the invasion and then fully supported it.
This pick only supports the criticism, that O`bama is just
another practical politician, rather than an agent of real political
change.

Saddened American   August 23rd, 2008 10:53 am ET

Interesting choice. No matter how you slice it, it looks like Obama is beginning to realize that McCain is going to give him a fight, and he frankly chose to go with experience, whether that be in foreign policy or otherwise.

The problem? Obama just gave credence to the adage "the more things change, the more they stay the same." That undercuts his entire message from the gitgo. Here we go again.

Change or Lack of Confidence?   August 23rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

Ga Girl   August 23rd, 2008 10:52 am ET

I still will not cast my vote for Obama , I don't think Biden has anything to offer us either just like Obama another empty suit who is stuck on themself

Dave Miller   August 23rd, 2008 10:51 am ET

As a conservative Republican, I love the choice! Biden is the one choice, short of Jimmy Carter, that should put McCain (the best of two evils) in the White house. Thanks Barry!

Beth   August 23rd, 2008 10:50 am ET

Old Washington, more arrogance. Stupidity on Obamas judgement.

IK   August 23rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

Pros – Experience, foreign policy background, age, comfort factor.

Cons – lots of cons. Boring man. Twice failed pres candidate (got what, 2% of the vote). Huge ego. Loves to talk (about himself). Comes up with foolish ideas like splitting Iraq into 3 countries (which did do something no one else had done – unified the Iraqis‘, who all said it was not going to happen). Voted for the Iraq war, so how can the Chosen One now point to that as his hardest moment, when his VP voted the other way. Talks himself into a corner (had to put on a Princeton hat to apologize for babbling for hours during the Alito confirmation hearing). Often rude. Shady deals with Big Credit (MBNA). Known gas bag. Plagiarism – during college, and during the 88 pres campaign (who would steal Neal Kiddoc's speeches?). Been a senator for over half his life (29 when elected, now what, 65?). Brings no states. Does not bring in female vote. Does not unify party. Ticking time bomb waiting to say something stupid (again). Says only Indians work in 7-11's. Am I out of room yet?

tedious898   August 23rd, 2008 10:48 am ET

What does a McCain ticket offer ? Total destruction of the U.S. Do u idiots think John's going to give you one of his homes once you lose yours. He doesn't even know how many he has.

Anonymous   August 23rd, 2008 10:47 am ET

Senator Biden's experience is a necessity for Obama. Obama's judgement and his ability to work across political lines and racial
lines, along with his openess and willingness to engage his critics,
gives him the edge over John McCain who appears to lack this
appeal.

President Roosevelt was known for his ability to surround himself
with competent and qualified people to fill in where he was lacking.
Barack Obama has that same ability.

A coach may not be able to play all the positions on a team, but he should certanly have the ability to bring together the right chemistry among personnel to win the Super Bowl, World Series or in Obama's case, put America back on track. Senator Biden is a wise choice.

Terry   August 23rd, 2008 10:46 am ET

He brings a loss in November for Obama for sure now that he didn't do the smart, educated, experienced thing to do to win in November by choosing Hillary.

Hillary 2012!

Karen Raleigh   August 23rd, 2008 10:45 am ET

Perfect choice for the country–Another e veryman who relates to people and is down to earth.. Hilary is not what we need and do you honestly think she would hand over her financial records to Caroline Kennedy???? I doubt that!!!! Barack towers above like an eagle , a wise eagle who knows what this country needs and Biden will help him deal with the nonsense in the government. It is a win- win situation. How many politicians and media persons would take the train for 80 minutes to and from work????Barack and Joe –winners all the way to the white house. God Bless

Peter of Oregon   August 23rd, 2008 10:44 am ET

It would have been impossible for Obama to have picked Hillary after all of the viscious negative attacks she made on him during the primaries. McCain would just have to play all of the clips of her remarks and re-run her ads to wage his dirty negative campaign. We've already seen him complain of media bias, and use the 3:00am ad attack. We've seen him call Obama elitist while he can't remember how many houses he owns.

Osterreich-Ungarn   August 23rd, 2008 10:44 am ET

Biden is the most knowledgeable person in the Senate concerning Finance and Economics. Exactly what the Doctor ordered for our ailing economy.

Nancy V.   August 23rd, 2008 10:42 am ET

Joe Biden brings the best of a dedicated public servant to the Democrats' ticket. He is smart, personable, decent, and respected on both sides of the Senate as well as internationally. Nobody knows more about foreign policy than Joe Biden. He also has strong economic credentials. Heck, I was disappointed that more people didn't recognize his considerable gifts during the primary debates.

Those that don't have respect for Sen. Biden's many fine qualities have long ago made up their mind's to vote for McSame and the Republican ticket.
This choice also proves that Sen. Obama will make good choices as president.

Monica for Obama in Indiana   August 23rd, 2008 10:41 am ET

Biden, brings balance to the ticket.

Mike in Houston   August 23rd, 2008 10:40 am ET

Biden brings the abiity to steal others words and get away with it. Other than that, it once again shows that Obama's change is more of the same liberal drab we've all seen fail again and again.

By the way, when is CNN going to cover Obama's proposal to codify into law US subjucation to the UN and transfer 0.7% of our GDP to the developing countries (such as sub-saharan Africa)?

That's a tax even democrats can do without.

Mike   August 23rd, 2008 10:40 am ET

I think Joe Biden brings the kind of experience to the ticket that Obama needs. A colleague who will help him with foreign affairs as well as work his way through the political Washington Machine. He is highly respected and ready himself to be president. My hope is that the Hillary supporters who are justifiably disappointed will vote for the Obama/Biden ticket for the good of the country and what our current need is. If thy choose, in protest to vote for McCain or not vote at all, they are in fact betraying their own political values and Hillary as well because of what she stands which is similar to Obama. Voting for the Countries future is what is important. Yes, I would vote for Hillary if the situation were reversed. Man/Woman, Black/White should not be the issue, the future of the country and how we get past this mess is.

Lori   August 23rd, 2008 10:39 am ET

Well so much for "CHANGE"! Biden is old goverment and is certainly not CHANGE! THANK YOU OBAMA you made this democrats choice so easy......GO MCCAIN Who will now get my vote. I was never going to vote for Obama anyway unless Hillary was the VP. Obama;s wife needs some lessons in COTH before she'll ever be ready for First Lady.

Bob in California   August 23rd, 2008 10:39 am ET

I think Obama blew the entire change theme with this one. Maybe Hillary can pull off a coup at the convention.

Tom in VA   August 23rd, 2008 10:39 am ET

The ENTIRE WORLD is BEGGING for Obama. Either they see something Americans refuse to see, or Americans are just smarter than the rest of the world. There's probably a lot of people who think the latter but that's the same arrogance that gets our country into trouble time after time (e.g., Iraq). I would have preferred Biden for Secretary of State, but I'm fine with his as VP. And if you think he's not a "fresh thinker", you're wrong, because we have ignored his forward-thinking, positive ideas for years. It's time for a change...from Republican policy, and from our own arrogant displays. OBAMA-BIDEN '08.

Bad choice. Two Senators on the same ticket have yet to win a presidential election. Folks just don't care much for that exclusive millionaires club. That feeling will come through loud and clear if McCain is dumb enough to choose Lieberman as his VP.

Phil Newton from Murphy, Oregon   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Consider our current Vice President.

Consider our current President.

Consider McCain's record of voting with them 95% of the time.

Need I say more?

OBAMA/BIDEN 08

Harry   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

This is going to be a joke. CNN you are holding these messages for moderation and then you delete them. It is biased.

Biden is Catholic but he is pro-choice. Biden has all liberal policies same as Barack.

Biden wanted to partition Iraq. What happened to that proposal. It may surface now.

I think Biden will take our white house and Barack will be his deputy in poliycy-making.

Politinole   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

I'm just happy he's finally picked someone. As a Democrat, proud to say John McCain has earned my unwavering support.

Christine - IL   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Mr. INFANTICIDE (Obama) will never get the Catholic vote! His views on killing preemies make him unelectable!

Ric, England   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Americans don't deserve to have Obama as their president. After picking Bush to Gore in 2000, and bearing in mind all the atrocities of the Bush administration (forging a CIA letter to justify the Iraq War, destroying US's and World's economy and the flawed response to hurricane Katrina, just to name a few), even considering voting for John McCain (that is no longer the maverick he was 5 years ago and is tied with Bush in almost every policy) shows how naive they are.

2Nurselady   August 23rd, 2008 10:36 am ET

Although I like Joe Biden, he does not bring enough to the ticket.

The "OLD MALE GUARD" prevails!

This is the FIRST time in my entire life that I have wanted to see my own Party, the Democratic Party, lose an election. I was just going to write-in Hillary's name, but now I have decided to vote for John McCain. I cannot condone what has happened in this election. I also do not think Biden can make up the remainder of this ticket. What poor judgement the leadership of the DNC have shown! We will be losing the White House – ONCE AGAIN!

Lorna, NY   August 23rd, 2008 10:35 am ET

Armageddan is coming soon!!   August 23rd, 2008 10:35 am ET

Mad said; "I like Biden – but with the college resumes thing and the plagurism thing…
I think ill go for McCain this year"

Good God mad, you act like you're picking out a pair of shoes or some outfit to wear. Do you realize how stupid you make yourself look with a statement like this? So, forget about the worst economy since the depression, and forget about the fact that we invaded a country under false pretenses, so forget the fact the McRichBoy has so much wealth that he can't even remember how many houses he has, so forget about the fact that YOUR boy abandoned his first wife and children to marry money and prestige, so forget about the fact that he wants to reenstate the draft, so forget about the fact that McCrooked was involved in the Keating 5 scandal, so forget about the fact that McCoward admitted he did a cowardly thing in regard to the Confederate flag of North Carolina, right?

And all you can think about is someone might have cheated in college and fudged on his resume? See this is why the EU will become the dominant player on the world scene, because of mindless idiots like yourself.

What a major BUFFOON you are. I feel sorry for you, I really do. If thats the extent of your reasoning ability, then wow no wonder we are in the mess we're in right now. Just sheer and utter STUPIDITY!!!

Charlotte   August 23rd, 2008 10:34 am ET

I agree, the country would be better off with McCain at the helm. The only one who would do a better job, isn't on a ticket. I guess Joes' trip to Georgia was a lobbing trip, at taxpayer expense. I guess Obama isn't so much for change after all. Joe has been in the Senate longer then McCain and is almost as old. Maybe we won't hear so much about Johns' age now. I guess Joe was bidding his time. LMAO

He's not change, he's just another old white guy inside Washington.
Conservatives can mobilize against him like no other candidate...he bring's Delaware, whoopee!

I'm so disappointed I'm asking for my money back to o'bama's campaign. I'm not a Republican posing as a democrat in this blog, I'm just a throughly disappointed Democrat. Geez, I'd have preferred Hilliary....

PollWacth   August 23rd, 2008 10:30 am ET

Absolutely a bad choice. This seals the deal. McCain will win easily. It won't be close. This is what everyone was talking about when inexperience is mentioned. Obama could not have done himself greater damage. He picked a Senator that previously said he was not fit to be president.

NotALemming   August 23rd, 2008 10:30 am ET

How juvenile is this man????? First, there's "I know, but I'm not tellin'!" Then there's "I'll text it to you." Is this a future POTUS, or a middle school student?

Re: Alvino
Reminds me of the bumper sticker on my car:
"You can't be pro-war AND pro-life"
I don't believe it is logically possible to be both. If it is, please respond with the argument for this, because I would love to be able to make sense of this stance.
When Jesus said "love thy enemy", He probably meant don't kill them (which is why I don't believe a Christian/Catholic could really be pro-war, logically). I believe you are fooling yourself if you believe it is fine and dandy to be both.

Change? Or Lack of Experience   August 23rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Experience. Knowledge without needing 300 foreign policy advisors. Another more-qualified candidate (Lloyd Benson for Michael Dukakis) as the VP choice. Intelligence. Someone who can be the puppet master like Cheney is to Bush.

It's sad when the better choice for POTUS is the one running for Vice President .

zackdale   August 23rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

"One hopes that what Biden brings to the ticket has less to do with him helping win the election and more to do with him helping govern the country. If Obama wants a VP who brings experience and an insider's knowledge of how things get done, he couldn't do better than Biden."

Funny I remember people saying that about Cheney 8 years ago. How did that work out again?

JB   August 23rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

If you're logical, and don't vote based on trivial matters, Biden is an excellent choice for Obama. The weaknesses people have always picked at have been his "lack of experience" and weakness when it comes to foreign policy. Biden has experience in spades and has been a very well respected voice in foreign policy for years.

To read some of the comments on here, its truly TERRIFYING to see what some people base their votes upon.

carlo   August 23rd, 2008 10:29 am ET

For all of you "plagarism" voters, remember Keating Five? You know, that incident where people actually went to jail?

Biden is the poorest Senator in the Senate, with a net worth of $300,000 negative. He lost his wife and two daughters in a car crash, has survived a brain aneuyrism, and still takes the train to work every day. You know, a regular guy. I hope McCain picks Romney. Their net worths combined could purchase a small country. Maybe they can go buy a country to run, just not this one.

Jim Deger   August 23rd, 2008 10:20 am ET

I think all the news outlets are missing an achilles heal with Obama's pick of Joe Biden. While Biden is Catholic he is also pro-abortion just as was Geraldine Ferraro. Look for tradtionalist Catholics to hound Biden and try to get Catholic bishops to do the same. By highlighting Biden's pro-abortion credentials, pro-lifers will be able to do what John McCain has not been able to do–energize conservative evangelicals and Catholics to trun out the vote for McCain denying Obama the inroads into Catholic, Hispanic, and evangelical voters he has sought to overtake and beat McCain.

Simply put, Biden's achilles heal carries the seeds for an Obama defeat.

hey there CNN. how about mentioning that he's an adjunct professor at my school, "Widener University Law School"!

Obama = Carter the 2nd!!!   August 23rd, 2008 10:19 am ET

He bring change!!!!!!! Oh wait no......he bring almost 40 years of DC!!!!!!!!! WOW Obama you are some of change.....oh no wait.....you are just a guy that says one thing and does the other. Kind of like when you said you would text who you picked 1st but turns out you leaked it and posted it on you website than hours later sent out the text.

This is starting to get funny.

Obama backers make sure you bring up how many houses McCain does not know he owns and I will pull out the Obama thinks there are 57 states and also wonder how many houses Biden owns. It is better that you keep using the house thing because IFObama ever trys to talk details in his plans people will see even faster how much of a no body this puppet is.

KenB, MI   August 23rd, 2008 10:19 am ET

As American citizens we see our expectations being met today...civil servants listening to what we need in this country...with our vote in November it is our hope that we the people empower the right choice for President of the United States of America...Barak Obama has chosen as his running mate someone we the people can trust and support...Joseph Biden brings the balance needed in this campaign for change...firmly rooted in the politics of America and not Washington D.C. Biden solidifies the Obama policy for change...Good Luck and God Bless

Patrick   August 23rd, 2008 10:19 am ET

Biden is the weakest, most lackluster pick Obama could have made. He repeatedly said Obama is not ready to be president; he has repeatedly praised McCain; he has a terrible temper and tends to fly off the handle; he had brain hemmorages a few years back; and he infamously plagarized a speech in 88 that ended his own campaign. When you're running a "campaign of words", that is a terrible choice. This selection will lead to Obama's loss. And he could have won with Hillary. Oh, well. Hillary in 2012!

PUMA-Jessie   August 23rd, 2008 10:18 am ET

My goodness gracious! The MSM was made to look like a bunch of clowns. Obama jerked your chain for almost two days and it made the reporters look like fools. I do like Biden, but I think he is on a losing ticket. If the Democrats want to win in November, They need to exchange Obama for Hillary Clinton and let her have Biden and that would be a winning ticket. Strange, what happened to "Judas" Richardson, who campaigned for the job? Never did hear if he was vetted

Jane   August 23rd, 2008 10:17 am ET

If the Obama camp wasn't wise enought to select a Clinton, who earned 20 million votes will campaigning, I don't think Obama is smart enough to run the country.
As a former Delaware resident, I like Joe Biden. However, I'm still not comfortable with Obama as President.
As a lifelong Democrat, I'm having a difficult time getting excited about the convention. I'm still holding out for Clinton!

Clinton supporters, stop being difficult. you have these so called PUMAs and all and you always want to put here in the mix of things like why did he not consider clinton. if he had considered him, you would have said WHY DID HE NOT CHOOSE HIM.please get over it because at the end of the day, your views are OBAMAs view. he wants to make your life better just like hillary wanted to do.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, IT IS ALL UP TO BREAD AND BUTTER ISSUES.

you might think that you are fixing OBAMA, or HURTING HIS FEELINGS by not voting for him, but at the end if the day, IF YOU VOTE FOR MCSAME or DO NOT GO OUT TO VOTE, YOU ARE NOT DAMAGING OBAMAs LIVELIHOOD BUT YOU ARE HURTIN YOUR.

YOU ARE HURTING YOUSELF, YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND MOST OF ALL……………….. " YOUR CHILDRENS' FUTURE"

OBAMA will go back to Washington and live his life and he will be comfortable as a Senator but you will suffer another 4 years of the same old, same old. you might even loose your job in the time period and the you will kick yourself and wonder why you thought you will hurt OBAMA but at the end of the day, YOU ARE SUFFERING. then 4 years later the repubs are going to come back and lie to you again and you will eat from their spoon that poisoned you. AREN'T YOU TIRE OR ALL THESE PROBLEMS WE HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO FOR THE PAST 8YRS. Mcain cannot even tell us the truth about how many houses he has, a simple thing as that. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING RICH Mr Mcain, WE JUST WANT THE TRUTH. to tell you the truth, ALL OF US DREAM OF BEING RICH TOO ONE DAY. So please treat us a ADULTS and tell us the truth.

IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT THIS COUNTRY, DO THE RIGHT THING. IF NOT AT LEAST DO IT FOR YOUR CHILDRENS' FUTURE

For those Hillary supporters that still want to support a woman, consider Green candidate Cynthia McKinney, former six-term congresswoman. She's strong on the issues and even selected another woman, Rosa Clemente, for her vice-presidential candidate. Why spend your vote on patriarch McCain when you can vote for a woman?

It's Over   August 23rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

As a Barack Obama supporter, I am sad to announce this morning... It's over!!! There were only two people that the HIlary Clinton supporters would have accepted: Al Gore and of course Hilary.

It saddens my heart that the America people, having firm evidence that we are heading in the wrong direction, will choose to continue our current path rather than to elect to have even the possibility of change or the opportunity of hope. We are now headed for 12 years of Reuplican/Bush failed policies. Will we survive? This is from the perspective of someone who loves this country...GOD HELP US ALL!!!

Finally, I conclude by stating "I surrender, we have lost...I too will vote for Mccain. Hopefully, it will be a blowout so that we may never reflect upon the fact that it was only one or two percentage points that were the causes of 4 years of Americas continued down fall in the world's standing and 4 years of domestic economic and political suffering.

With regret and love for country,

Mccain 08

Max (Miami)   August 23rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

Biden is a loose canon who can't keep his mouth shut...

He brings nothing to the table and it only proves that Obama has no balls....
He preaches "change" and he picks "old school politics".

Give me a break!!!!

disappointed   August 23rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

Very disappointing, All you Obama supporters should understand that Hillary and Obama were practically tied. He just barely "won"- HRC understood how close the race was and that she would need to unify the democrats and would have named Obama VP, it is unfortunate that Obama didn't treat us with the same consideration. **and for anyone who disputes the remark I made about being tied, look at the states Hillary won, and see how the delagates were distributed**
Also in addition, If Obama was going to decide not to unify the HRC democrats, I would have given him more consideration if he chose to select a "non insider" democrat, He flip flopped again- Why should I believe he will get us out of the Iraq occupation.

ex-dem in the south   August 23rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

What Biden brings is a guaranteed loss. Any voter in his right mind who vets a candidate can research and see that Biden uses his influence with his son, the attorney general of deleware to get favors done. It's the same ole dirty politics of the past and has no sense of "change" that Obama wants to promote. Once again, Obama has gone back on his promise of change. When will you kool aid drinkers figure it out?

sharon   August 23rd, 2008 10:15 am ET

change and experience.....good choice.

JIM...TX   August 23rd, 2008 10:14 am ET

jcf   August 23rd, 2008 10:13 am ET

im ok with the pick i really liked bloomberg

Neal   August 23rd, 2008 10:13 am ET

That's too bad Biden would've been better in the Senate.
To bad Obama couldn't have found someone more non-traditional. Wesley Clarke type, perhaps a Republican Senator.

Willow, in Iowa   August 23rd, 2008 10:13 am ET

Biden brings good international experience, he's a good debater and he's going to be a good and outspoken thorn in McCain's side. I'm pleased with this match.

Van   August 23rd, 2008 10:13 am ET

Although Biden is risky, he'll bring something Obama can't..... the fight. While Obama lays back and takes the high road and courts the intelligent voters, Biden will go on the attack and tear into McCain like no one else can.

So you see, you have a Pres. Nominee who appeals to the highest denominator of voters, those who respect facts and reason. And Biden will appeal to the lower ones, those who vote based on attacks and fancy arguing. I'm looking forward to the first debates.

LifeLongDemocrat   August 23rd, 2008 10:13 am ET

I am happy that Biden is on the ticket. Those of us who have been die-hard Hillary fans will welcome his addition. He is experienced, a stand-up guy and will ensur an Obama win in November.

I toyed with the idea of voting for McCain but after reading how he voted on several key issues decided that I would have to vote for Obama. Adding Biden increases the pallatibility of doing this.

Obama/Biden !!!!!!!!2008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wondering: In your opinion, can Obama do anything right?

BWelcome   August 23rd, 2008 10:11 am ET

I am excited about Obama's choice to have Biden serve him as VP. Although I received the Obama text message after the CNN release of the VP announcement, I was still happy to receive the text. I was livid to know that somone in Obama's camp leaked the story to CNN. That was so untrustworthy!!

Obama should find out who that person is (or those people are) and ensure that he/she (or they) do not remain on staff. He cannot afford to have those types of leaks of information among his core staff...especially as we face the convention, November voting, and Barack's soon-to-be White House residency.

William   August 23rd, 2008 10:11 am ET

What Biden brings is a garantee that Obama will lose, he should have picked someone who will help him win, and that's Hillary Clinton.

Edwin   August 23rd, 2008 10:11 am ET

More than 4 more years of the same garbage to the White House.

Donkey Party   August 23rd, 2008 10:10 am ET

He brings more than the funny old guy with the little T-rex arms, and infinitely more than Hillary could ever bring.

DE Voice   August 23rd, 2008 10:10 am ET

A point of view from a Delaware resident:
Biden may be experienced, a DC insider, but he is NOT elitist. Delaware has less people than some large towns, so everyone knows each other. Government is accessible, including our Washington delegation. Our 2 senators and 1 congressman commute to work by Amtrak. You can see them and speak to Biden at the train station, or any event that brings the politicos.
He is cut of the Ted Kennedy wing of the party, liberal, but straight forward. Sure he puts his foot in his mouth, but honesty is still better than a lie. Oh by the way, I am a moderate, lean republican, didn't vote for Joe last time, but still respect his abilties and standards.

Danny   August 23rd, 2008 10:09 am ET

I agree. Funny how when face with the option of picking a progressive contemporary...he went with the old school politics. I believe Obama is completely out of touch with the middle America. The nation of Democrats is split and we have clearly stated that Obama represents an optimistic future and that Clinton represents experience and results. I believe that the majority of Democrats wanted a little of both and had Obama chosen Clinton, a Democrat would be a out president and as a team they could have done so many wonderful things for our country. I am very disappointed at how many Democratic politicians turned against Hillary even while she still winning state after state. The Democrat party is as politically driven as the Republican party and no matter how much we Democrats want to believe we represent the average American, we don't. Our votes did not count. Repubicans did this to Gore and now the Democrats have done this to themselves.

Jeffrey   August 23rd, 2008 10:08 am ET

Nothing.

Josh   August 23rd, 2008 10:06 am ET

Biden is very polarizing even if he "appeals to Catholic swing voters" as CNN believes. Biden is not a bad pick but predictable and boring, especially after all the hype and circus surrounding it. He is just another piece of the puzzle for Obama.. Nothing more...

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 23rd, 2008 10:05 am ET

He is a perfect choice. He'll kick butt in the debates. He brings great experience and is well-liked in Pennsylvania and with blue color voters. They'll make a great team in the White House. America can't afford four more years of Bush.

Linda   August 23rd, 2008 10:04 am ET

Biden brings tremendous foreign policy credentials, not to mention years of experience learning how things do and don't get done in Washington. He's straightforward in the way McCain claims to be but isn't. He's tough and smart. I think he's an excellent choice.

Obama/Biden '08!

I was for Obama/Clinton – but Obama/Biden was my second choice. He is a straight talker! That's what he brings. And a bunch of serious experience.

David   August 23rd, 2008 10:04 am ET

I like Biden, but it doesn't seem to me to be a good match. Yes, Barack needs him for his foriegn policy experience... because he doesn't have his own! Who makes the decisions anyway??? Thats scary.

Jeremy-Columbus, OH   August 23rd, 2008 10:03 am ET

Biden brings nothing, but his 1% he got in Iowa before dropping out of the race in January. Nice job Obama, you could have just called McCain and congratulated him on his upcoming November victory instead.

keith a dewey   August 23rd, 2008 10:03 am ET

Two things: Biden is an attack dog. Obama is an intelectual stalwart. Americans understand attack dog not the latter. Second, Binden knows how to make fun of stupidity and making fun of someone is more devastating than just pointing out flaws.

Once again the Democrats pair up two left wing liberals. That is not a winning combination. Another boring white guy; a loud mouth; someone like Obama who used someone else's speech and made it his own...other than that, Joe Biden brings nothing to the ticket.

Although listening to the liberal media this morning, they make it sound like Joe Biden is making the way clear for Obama the Messiah to win the Presidency.

Liberals since the 1960's do not win the Presidency.

Judy from PA   August 23rd, 2008 10:02 am ET

Nothing. Maybe Obama should actually come to Scranton to campaign instead of picking someone who was born here 65 years ago.

Pedeen   August 23rd, 2008 10:00 am ET

Biden brings alot in the Obama camp! for one this guy can shoot straight than Mcain!, experience and political maturiy are some of the factors which made him picked! so who ever is not comfortable with him as the VP you have a choice! vote for Mcain and then enlist in the military or send your sons or daughters coz for sure Mcain gonna bomb bomb Iran! another third war! even though over 4000 souls of brave men and women in uniform have been lost!

Jose Rodriguez   August 23rd, 2008 9:59 am ET

Not a good pick from Obama. If elected I can see them discussing constitutional gibberish in the Oval Office. None has any experience governing. They are both are both great legislators wasting their time trying to govern this country. I predict this combo will not be a success. I wish Obama had picked someone who was a moderate with some governing experience.

Biden may not hurt Obama’s candidacy but will not help him either. I am an independent voter who was really interested in Obama’s pick and was a bit disappointed with it. He could have done better.

Jose

Rick Pippard   August 23rd, 2008 9:58 am ET

I woke up this morning to find that Barack had chossen Joe Biden and felt completely deflated and, within that instant, had lost all interest in the campaign.

I think his choice has cost him the election.

:(

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   August 23rd, 2008 9:58 am ET

Well there goes any perceived advantage John McCain supporters thought he might have had on National Defence.

Biden actually fought in the Viet Nam war and didn't make propaganda films for the enemy. Both Biden and Obama know enough not to publicly try and humiliate other countries and their leaders then expect to have any chance at diplomacy.

The one clear fact is the many mean spirited comments McCain has made about other nations were childish and immature and anyone with the IQ of a house plant realizes this type of rhetoric does nothing for the image of the U.S.

Maturity will trump childishness every time.

Watch the polls now!!!!!!!!

He brings a boring image, no chemistry with Obama, and the aura of two failed presidential bids because voters didn't like him.

I don't particularly like McCain, but I think Obama just gave him the Presidency.

Michelle   August 23rd, 2008 9:56 am ET

Biden brings a flashing neon sign that Obama lacks confidence and is desperate.

James C   August 23rd, 2008 9:56 am ET

It sure does not support the stance of "Change" when you add a long-time Washington Insider to the ticket. He just totally clouded his "message" by doing what he thinks will help win the white catholic votes rather than staying true to the root of his campaign....this could definitely come back to bite him in his hind quarters (especially with some of last years clips where Biden slams Obama).

tony   August 23rd, 2008 9:56 am ET

So much for change-
It's obvious Obama can't do it himself on his record–
His only shot was Clinton but his arrogance got him a Running mate with the same–
I will say Biden-probably is the better candidate for President

jgzeger   August 23rd, 2008 9:56 am ET

It would be better if Biden were the the head of the ticket and Obama was the VP.

Guanto   August 23rd, 2008 9:55 am ET

Laugh it up... But remember: No one is excited about McCain – who won by default from an equally disappointing cast of candidates... Please enlighten me how anyone is going to lift that sorry ticket.

California Gold   August 23rd, 2008 9:54 am ET

McCain would spend his entire campaign advertising defending Romney, who brings nothing to the table to come close to Joe Biden. You can't pump up a governor with no federal government experience to negate the seniority, experience and vast knowledge of Biden. McCain may have a stroke due to the stress of trying to fight a losing battle by the time of the November election.

Dem for McCain   August 23rd, 2008 9:53 am ET

Biden is a strong candidate. But I'll vote for the strong candidate at the top of the ticket.

As a Hillary supporter, the vice presidential choice was going to be the decider for me–whether to vote for Obama or sit out this election. Obama came through and chose Joe Biden–a people's choice person. Obama showed me in this choice that he has the wisdom, the guts, and the "walk the talk" to take this country to its finest level in years. He should be able to achieve that with Joe Biden as his vice president! Great choice!

ree   August 23rd, 2008 9:52 am ET

Really don't care what he brings to the ticket. I am a woman and Catholic and still not voting for them.

No Change here. Same old, Same old

J   August 23rd, 2008 9:51 am ET

Obama, Obama>>…what a shame….???? you said that you are a change agent..and you use this slogan as a key proponent during your debate….you are just like every politician who would do whatever it takes just to get elected in office…..you said that you were against the war…but still you have chosen a runningmate that supports it. you knew you have no experience…to carry this country forward…so you have to turn again to the washington insider to carry on the same old policies…..Like George Bush, you don't know a thing and you will rely on Biden to make your decision…..Obama and Biden is the same as Bush and Chinney……

BIDEN BRINGS NOTHING BUT GAFFES AND SEXISM:

What do we expect Hillary to say? She has to say good things but voters understand.

Brian, Quad Cities   August 23rd, 2008 9:47 am ET

The pick of Biden shows that the most urgent crises being left by Bush are those of foreign policy.

*Diffusing a second cold war

*Preventing more violent wars in the Middle East

*Keeping relations with China from becomming adversarial

This pick shows addressing these issues will be top priority.

Make no mistake, Obama's pick was shaped by the messes he's inheriting from Bush. There is too much damage done to this nation and the world for any president to even think of implementing their agenda and moving this nation forward.

Greg   August 23rd, 2008 9:46 am ET

Maria Houser Conzemius   August 23rd, 2008 9:46 am ET

That's Reality, I disagree. Obama is arrogant, as well as rude. I like Joe Biden, but he should have picked Hillary. Hillary's supporters are not happy, and will be more unhappy as they hear of the snub.

JR   August 23rd, 2008 9:46 am ET

Excellent choice ! However the hard core Hillary women are disregarding whats good for their country and caring only about a female in the white house . Voting for McSame is out of spite does a disservice to you and your country.....Grow Up !

Mike   August 23rd, 2008 9:46 am ET

Biden is an outstanding choice!

He is strong, with great experience, perspective and judgment in foreign affairs, clearly capable to be President himself if that need ever arises.

He will be a great team member, working with Obama to bring change and reason back to our relationships with the rest of the world.

And, he will speak his mind within an Obama administration. It is not in Biden's DNA to be a "Yes Man". He will be one of the best of a number of excellent advisors that Obama will take advantage of, and he will contribute greatly.

He meets all of Obama's stated criteria for who would make a good VP, and he meets mine.

Lanre   August 23rd, 2008 9:46 am ET

I think CNN should stop all this negativity about Senator Hillary Clinton
Its done, it getting too much now, this woman dint do anything wrong that run a great campaine against someone that CNN loved so much.

This woman is a great weapon for America and if CNN continue all this negativity, they might regret it.

CNN always have nothing positive about her, and when the only thing that comes out of CNN is negative, then its so clear that it has become personal.

I URGE CNN TO STOP ALL THIS NEGATIVITY AGAINST SENATO CLINTON

THE LASTEST IS "WILL HILARY SNURB OVER OBAMA'S PICK" BY WOLF

For goodness sake she is intelligent and loves this country and i know she will be delighted Obama made a good pick.

He is not afraid to speak his mind, he does not do the politically correct thing that so many do in Washington, he has tons of foriegn policy experience which is where Obama was lacking. But one thing is not being stated here, Obama and Biden are 2 men in a very large machine. How this country will make a turn for the better is not only who is the POTUS and VPOTUS but, Cabinet members, advisors, the Senate, the House, the Judicary Branch etc. No one or two people make the decisions, they are made by many. So even though the face of the government will be Obama/Biden, I am more interested in the Sec of Defense pick, the Sec of State pick etc. Congrats Mr Biden, I will be honered to follow you and Mr. Obama.

Bill From Florida   August 23rd, 2008 9:41 am ET

If it were Biden.. Clinton..WOW what a team that would be. A sure win
for the Democrats..Biden cannot help Obama in any way shape or form..Obama is a looser.

mbrown   August 23rd, 2008 9:41 am ET

Pro: the same thing Hillary Cliton would of brought to the ticket, experience in washington

Con: Not her supporters, nor many new ones....quite possibly the oval office which is what we ( democrats ) thought we wanted when all this took place a year ago !

Yes i supported hillary clinton as was proud to do so, yes i am by the way an african american male ( one of the 8% ) who believed in hillary all along, yet one who will be staying home this election and watching the numerous block buster movies me and my girl will rent so as not to watch our party lose yet again the oval office, due to the candidate of choices lack of respect for one of the most powerful democrats our party has had on our side in a long time.

obama/biden ! I think .....NOT !

Deeznuts   August 23rd, 2008 9:41 am ET

Excellent choice! Biden will help appeal to the downscale xenophobes who cling to guns and religion. Obama will not get the majority of those votes but he will narrow the gap. The PUMA have been officially thrown under the bus. Taste the exhaust Beaches!!

lol election   August 23rd, 2008 9:40 am ET

2004 kerry chose edwards because he was #2 just to score votes. Obama chose Biden because the two of them can work together, share similar goals, offer different opinions and Obama can trust Biden.

Had obama chose clinton, it would have been just for votes, clinton and obama would butt heads constantly and Obama couldn't trust clinton. Who wants to have a VP that wants a power grab?

Besides, other than being a heartbeat from presidency what role does a VP have other than casting a tie breaking vote in the senate? Absolutely nothing. Making Clinton VP would be placing her in a do-nothing position.

Pat Neum   August 23rd, 2008 9:38 am ET

I am a white, presbyterian, 63 year old woman, and an independent voter
I am now sure who to vote for I will vote for the BIDEN and Obama-ticket

drew   August 23rd, 2008 9:38 am ET

McCain, who takes credit for a ghostwriter's work regularly, can't possibly criticize Biden for what made it into speeches he wrote twenty years ago.

Nor can McCain trump up Biden's comments about him from 2005, as they will just remind so many former McCain voters, like myself, who have realized this is not even a shadow of the man he once was.

The lies, called on by every media outlet, continue. The flip-flops from taxes to drilling to the timetable to Afghanistan occur almost daily.

And the hypocrisy is galling.

In Biden, we have a ticket of two real straight-shooters, not more of the rich elitist Republican mockery of the straight shooter that was George Bush and is John McCain.

Hillary Supporter   August 23rd, 2008 9:36 am ET

I'm a Hillary Supporter but you guys have to be out of your mind if you vote for McCain b/c you're bitter. I was unhappy but I'm not stupid. How can you be a real Hillary supporter and vote for the GOP that shares OPPOSITE ideas and different policies than your "girl". You are ignorant for thinking she will automatically win in 2012; that may NOT happen and then we will all be looking sick with an economy worse than it is today. Please, lose the feelings and vote with your mind, be smart, get over it and know that Hillary WILL have an important role in this so that she can push her Healthcare plan. Do you think McCain care about healthcare. Hillary won me over with her Healthcare plan and I can not, will not vote repub and lose this. Guys, Wake up... PUMA's STOP IT...I really do believe these PUMA's are Repubs... I can't imagine 18 million people being so stupid. Well, less than 18 million b/c I am not with you.

nikko   August 23rd, 2008 9:35 am ET

as a lifelong democrat i had very high hopes that we (the dems) could address and resolve many of the disasters we face today.

i also had high hopes that we really would be looking for new ways to address old problems.

but for the past month, barack has been running a campaign like the ones we have seen for decades. and now he has selected another old, white haired guy...who has been in washington for decades.

i can deal with my hopes being shattered...but now i have to find something else to do on the first tuesday in november...

Abe   August 23rd, 2008 9:35 am ET

I would have prefered if he picked Hillary, but I am happy with Biden too!!

Denise   August 23rd, 2008 9:34 am ET

I am looking forwayd to the debate between Biden/Romney! Biden will make mincemeat of him! Especially when it comes to the war in Iraq and foreign policy.

BROOKLYN   August 23rd, 2008 9:34 am ET

What does Biden bring to the ticket?

Pretty much a sure loss... Just lost half of the 18 million Clinton supporter B.H. Well done man... Guess this an indication of what you really think of the peoples voice...

Mike, FL   August 23rd, 2008 9:32 am ET

Obama and Biden each own one house like every one of us.

As opposed to 7 luxury homes for McCain and 6 mansions for Mit Romeny.

With the housing crisis going on right now, it is the fact that McCain/Romeny will share our pains.

Ex-mod-GOP for Obama   August 23rd, 2008 9:32 am ET

He brings a lot, especially additional experience with foreign policy. Biden makes this a blockbuster ticket.

Liz   August 23rd, 2008 9:31 am ET

He brings the wisdom of age...something baby bots chronically complained about on the Ticker posts for months on end with "Old man" McCain.

Personally speaking, with all due respect to Joe Biden, there isn't a soul on earth that can make Obama qualified to run our government.

think people   August 23rd, 2008 9:31 am ET

BIden is a *great* choice. He does what a VP should–complements the candidate and is ready to lead God forbid he ever need to. Fact is, I liked Biden best of the Dem candidates during the debates–he was smart, tough, free thinking, and articulate. I could not be any happier with Obama's choice.

Those of you claiming this does not represent "change" are ridiculous. Of course it does: Obama is the candidate, and he is smart enough to seek balance and variety of opinion. People say things during campaigns–MCCain better watch out if he picks Romney! –so Biden's critique from the primaries is hardly relevant. I have to go sign in to donate to Obama.com now. Obama/Biden '08!

Rosetta JKnox   August 23rd, 2008 9:31 am ET

Joe Biden is the best pick for Obama. Joe Biden brings a lot to the ticket and I know the Republicians are scare. Mitt Rommney does not add up to Biden.

Obama-Biden 08

Dave in Chicago   August 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

It's good to see Obama recognizing his inexperience and bringing in Joe Biden to play the father figure to help develop his character.

On the other hand, it takes away from Obama's new style politics position to bring in a old school Democrat who sat in the Senate for almost 40 years watching the US oil dependence grow unchecked and the environment and the economy go to hell. I guess Barack forgot he threw that mud at McCain a few days ago. Of course, he can change his position on this issue like he's done on so many others.

It seems like the biggest component of the "change" Obama is promising is that of his own positions as he tries to remake his message into the one that people want to hear regardless of where he stood last week. Chicago politics at its finest!

Dave in NYC   August 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

Biden also brings some of that confident older senator personality that John McCain has been using to dominate Obama lately. McCain will not be able to act so alpha male about his competition because Biden can play the same game.

Bob   August 23rd, 2008 9:29 am ET

Nothing

alvino   August 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

Obama chose a running mate that could bring another view point to the discussion on important matters. As an effective leader, it is good to weigh all the possibilities. There are far more areas of agreement between these two, than areas of dispute.

McCain's choice has to share the same pro-life stand: protect the unborn, turn your back on them when they are born, and bomb the crap out of innocent civilians in a far away land. Pro-life should be pro-life.

68 year old   August 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

Biden brings absolutely nothing except political liberalism at its utmost! Change ; Har Har Har de Har Har !

Mad   August 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

I like Biden – but with the college resumes thing and the plagurism thing...
I think ill go for McCain this year

David   August 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

One hopes that what Biden brings to the ticket has less to do with him helping win the election and more to do with him helping govern the country. If Obama wants a VP who brings experience and an insider's knowledge of how things get done, he couldn't do better than Biden.

Hello!!!   August 23rd, 2008 9:27 am ET

Absolutely nothing.

That's Reality   August 23rd, 2008 9:26 am ET

What Biden brings to the ticket is one of the most arrogant guys I have ever heard. Obama needed someone mature with wisdom but this isn't the guy. A VOTE FOR McCAIN IS A WISER AND SAFER CHOICE. Even Biden said he would be honored to run WITH McCain!!!!

California Voter   August 23rd, 2008 9:23 am ET

Biden brings himself and that's not enough to cause me to support Obama whose core values are suspect, and judgment in the company he keeps questionable. In addition, Obama's his lack of experience and tendency to waffle concern me. I think he can play dirty, but can he play tough? Biden is a safe choice and frankly who cares . . his lack of vote getting during the primary is an indication to me that he is what one could call a neutral candidate to most of the populace.

. . .

Penn Voter   August 23rd, 2008 9:22 am ET

Maybe we can flip this ticket. Let Biden take the lead and then Junior can get 8 years of OJT.

JohnBoy   August 23rd, 2008 9:21 am ET

If it Biden that means it the "end of the Clinton era", thank god.

No more Bill and Hillary show.

Who cares if the muslim is president, has to be better than the Clintons.

I would think that Hillary will lose her spot in congress next election. Most democrats will lose their seats with a approval rating of 8%.

Now let the real history of Bill Clinton be told.

McCain 08, the only real American running for president.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   August 23rd, 2008 9:21 am ET

He brings a Liberal/European Socialist/Welfare State Agenda but Biden also brings experience on foriegn affairs that Obama severley lacks and he can help keep Obama from making as many mistakes by his wisdom. Biden is also a democratic attack dog so Obama can keep up his good boy image so the voters will not see his Chicago Poltics upbringing. The biggest bad that Biden brings is he is as partisan as the majority of Senators and Representatives from both parties are. He is not in the middle just as Obama is not in the middle.

Irene   August 23rd, 2008 9:21 am ET

Senator Biden brings experience to this ticket. It is now a ticket representing CHANGE AND EXPERIENCE ........just what America needs at this time!

OBAMA / BIDEN 08

EARL POMEROY   August 23rd, 2008 9:19 am ET

WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE CHANGE IN THE WHITEHOUSE.
HASN'T BIDEN BEEN INVOLVED FOR MANY YEARS?
HILLARY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BETTER CHOICE BECAUSE NEVER HAS THERE BEEN A WOMAN AND MAN IN THE WHITEHOUSE.
DIDN'T BIDEN SAY OBAMA WERE NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT.

concerned fl voter   August 23rd, 2008 9:18 am ET

shrewd political move!!!!

dee   August 23rd, 2008 9:17 am ET

More than any other,

Should quiet the issue of experience. or was that the only issue?

O/B will win

Feel the awakening

Mike in Houston   August 23rd, 2008 9:16 am ET

Alot of foreign experience, someone who can go toe to toe with McCain. Besides, he probably remembers how many houses he owns.

rich - PA   August 23rd, 2008 9:13 am ET

The rockstar and the bitter Biden. The dream has become a nightmare.

Since when have Pennsylvanians given a single thought to Biden? Not as long as I can remember...

Chalk one up for the Republicans.

McCain 08.

Funade   August 23rd, 2008 9:13 am ET

Nice choice although not as refreshing as Sibelius or Bayh. However, it is pragmatic.

Obama/Biden 08/12

Jan   August 23rd, 2008 9:10 am ET

old politics, experience, old washington! Barrack knows what his weaknesses are, anyway.

Debby   August 23rd, 2008 9:08 am ET

I guess you can ask what did Biden bring to his ticket when running for President then you will get your answer. These qualifications mean nothing if people don't vote for you the first time.
