DENVER (AP) – In Denver, a man who tried to carry two hunting rifles and two pistols into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's downtown hotel remains in police custody.

A Secret Service spokesman says Pelosi and other guests briefly left the hotel during Saturday's incident but were never in danger.

The man is identified as 29-year-old Joseph Calanchini of Pinedale, Wyoming. He faces a charge of unlawful carrying of a weapon. Police officers at the Grand Hyatt hotel noticed him carrying a rifle-type case at the entrance and detained him.

It's not known if the weapons were loaded.

A Pelosi spokesman says "the speaker was never in any danger and she appreciates the quick and professional response of the police."

Pelosi is in Denver for the Democratic National Convention.

This proves Nancy Pelosi is guilty of selling out the Democratic Party with malice intent. Otherwise she wouldn't have allowed the Secret Service to over react when it came to a law abiding citizen exercising their right to bare arms and hunt.

Poor Nancy, had you simply allowed the Dems to proceed with impeachment hearings on Bush and Chaney for the crimes committed against the American people you wouldn't have to look so closely over your shoulder. BOO……..Did she jump?

He was openly and legally carrying the firearms. That isn't exactly the M.O. of a murderer. The Queen Pelosi trashes the Second Amendment. And I totally agree with Von Bismark's comment! The DemocRATs are the culture of hate: this is what happens when you live in fear and contempt of your fellow man.

Loretta from California   August 24th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Probably a GOP hate mongering, war mongering, gun toting, nut-case. This is what we have come to expect from the so called "Religious" right.

DEMOCRATS UNITE!!!

Debby   August 24th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Yep the gun clinging religious person that Obama doesn't like gets arrested not surprising.

ET from OMAHA   August 24th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

That what you get when you want everybody in the country to be able to buy M-16 and M-60's for a so called self defense.
Why are we fighting terrorist oversea and at the same time we are trying to promote terrorism here in the USA allowing pshycos to buy guns. GOD save this country. Communist understand there is a limit to freedom.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   August 24th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

The result of a culture of hate.

JS   August 24th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

So a hunter was checking into a hotel that the Queen happened to be in.

Nice way to respect the constitution Democrates.

Forgot Democrates hate the constitution as it gets in the way of being a good marxist.

Rob in NY   August 24th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

I guess your rights are null and void if you're within 10 blocks of Nancy Pelosi.

The man in question was legally transporting guns to a gun shop for repair before a hunting trip. See :

Well, so it will continue! :(

This Clinton supporter will not be alone in celebrating when Obama loses!

Hillary is the best candidate participating in this election. The democrats blew it again! They selected the far left-wing liberal out of touch with mainstream America!

Now, this campaign is about the divisive, sexist, racist movement inspired by Obama that spawns hate and extreme anger. This is a huge problem for America!

America can't afford an Obama presidency.

Even Bush, and I have not been a "W" fan, is spiraling up, and his legacy in years to come will give him credit for establishing a new Democracy and an ally in the Middle East.
Obama never!

Don't waste your vote! Vote for John McCain 08 and Hillary Clinton 2012! :)

Bob   August 24th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I am not a big gun fan.

Having said that, I would like to know what did the man do specifically that caused him to be arrested? Carrying rifles in a case? Or was he carrying pistols on his person?

Are the Secret Service going a bit overboard or was there a real threat?

Come on guys, before plastering a story over the world, how about asking a few questions first?

Mike   August 24th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

This is America. People shoot rifles in Colorado. Nobody leaves expensive Rifles in their cars in Hotel paking lots. I hope this Guy did not get screwed over.

the Head   August 24th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Probably just some guy in Denver to go elk hunting and Pelosi saw he had a gun and messed her drawers! Typical liberal!

Larry Buchas   August 24th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Keep it up! We're just another step closer to gun control.

These idiot right-wing nuts should be thrown in the slammer for life.

Sheri   August 24th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

I'm glad that person was caught. THE CRAZY SUCKER!
