Sen. Obama introduced Sen. Biden as his running mate Saturday.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (CNN) – Even though Joe Biden's foreign policy experience has been touted as one of the primary reasons he was tapped as the VP candidate, the man at the top of the ticket seemed to downplay the Deleware senator's most talked about credentials Monday, saying it's his roots that mattered to Obama most.

"People talk a lot about Joe's foreign policy experience," the Illinois senator told an audience of mostly undecided Republicans and Independents.

"And its true, he's chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he knows world leaders, he can be a wonderful counselor and adviser. People talk about all the experience he has in Washington, and that’s true he's been chairman of the Judiciary Committee, he helped pass the Violence Against Women Act, he helped pass the 1994 crime bill that put 100,000 more cops on the streets. He knows how to get things done in Washington."

"But you know the most important thing about Joe Biden?" Obama continued. "He's never forgotten where he came from. He's from a working class family that he still takes the train back every night to Delaware to spend it with his family."

The White House hopeful also brought up the fact that he's "gone through the tragedy of losing his first wife and his infant daughter in a car accident."

He added that Biden can relate to working class Americans because he's "gone through" what they've gone through.

PUMA should be investigated by the FBI for criminal activity and malicious intent. These people are dangerous. Anyone who would cast a vote to purposely throw our nation into further turmoil should be viewed as domestic terrorists, or unpatriotic tyrants.

To those who keep repeating that Obama does not have experience: Why is it that the current administration moving to adopt what Obama has been pushing throught his campaign? Months ago, Iraq said they prefer Obama's plan and last week Iraq/US agreed upon a timetable for troops coming home.
Have you notice, the republican have not had any comments on Iraq lately or the gas tax holiday, or affordable health care. It's drill, drill and let's see which one of Obama's opponents once said he was not qualified. I've seen more growth in Obama during his campaigning than most of you can reference with the 30 years McCain has been in office.
Few of us are politican, but I can tell you if you are committed to best interest of your community and have a vision for progress — you could run your community or atleast be a key leader for it. I can respect years of service, but good judgment is needed at any age — young or old.

CNN is simply proving that you can lead American citizens by the nose into voting for anybody. Taking a statement then twisting its actual meaning and watch as thousands of voters turn their choice to follow. With the right "editors" I'd bet the media could easily get George Bush re-elected yet once again. People are sheep as its much more comfortable to let someone else think for oneself then take the time and effort to use an actual intellect and research your ideas. As for the upcoming election between Obama and McCain….America's screwed either way, politicians have long forgotten what democracy is really about.

Sometimes I'm confused with CNN, are they against Obama because of Hillary or they just don't know how to conduct better reporting. Downplay what? PUMA group, we know your main reason of not supporting Sen. Obama, you are all racists who are using Hillary as an excuse. just because Hillary lost and wasn't on the VP shortlist doesn't mean you should allow Republicans with their failed domestic and foreign policy to come back to the white house. at the end of the day a true democrat will always vote for a democrat even if he/she is upset period. Conclusion, you are either a racist who is against obama based on his color or you're not a true democrat to begin with. Which one are you? please let's know. Thanks.

Jennifer   August 25th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

I dont think Hillary is 100% behind Obama but I will give her an E for effort. Despite all the drama within the democratic party (because everyone is looking out for themselves instead of the party ) .Obama will win. He beat Clinton and he will McCain with or without Clinton supporters. There is one thing I know I am voting and me nor any of my friends have been polled.

Susan, CA   August 25th, 2008 7:50 pm ET

Thank you Kathleen. Very true. Many people will vote for McCain because they don't have time to listen and become educated before casting their vote. They only have time to listen to the lies in the advertisements. Please, please take the time to get educated before casting your votes. This is the most important election of our time, and the fate of our Country rests in our hands.

Of course, he's downplaying Joe Biden's history in the Senate. To admit that he chose Joe Biden is to admit that he is so weak on foreign relations himself. For a man who wants CHANGE,…. who's going to CHANGE to way Washington does business, why did he choose someone who has had years and years to make changes and hasn't. Isn't Joe Biden part of the problem?

1. Baraka Obama Sr. was a Muslim and by Muslim law, his son Baraka Jr is a Muslim by Islamic standards. So according to your logic, Jr is being disrespectful of both his natural father AND his stepfather. Are you suggesting that Obama be punished by death?

2. So what about the millions of women in Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Chechnya, Bosnia just name some muslim nations, who do not follow such dress "laws"?

You know, I'm starting to believe you are an epitome of Obama's kool-aid youth brigade.

Mack   August 25th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

I hope people that post here and read here really don't believe and take serious anything you see…If you do..you are stupid. First, Hillary Clinton is 100% behind Obama. Obama supporters should not attack her for the actions of some of her ex-supporters. She has went out of her way to support Obama and it will not be her fault if Obama loses. Those people claiming to support Hillary, don't really because they refuse to listen to what this women is saying. I believe Hillary was our best choice, but that is my opinion…not Hillary's. So Obama supporters, stop blaming Hillary everytime some media outlet decides to stir up something. Bill and Hillary are true democrats and have always been. Also, be aware of republicans in democrat clothing just keeping the fight going.

Jennifer   August 25th, 2008 7:41 pm ET

There are some people mainly just like the so-called die hard Clinton supporters that are JUST NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR OBAMA they will never tell you the REAL reason why they will simply hide behind the famous now line. We just dont know enough about him. I mean seriously you went from universal health care to A man who do not know how many homes he has and a man who thinks you should have at least 5 million( OK ill give him a break lets say 4 million) to be RICH ? Then they let him exploit them on his campain video. I can only think of two words. Dumb Idiots!

David   August 25th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

Come on CNN with the title. He was not downplaying the man's resume. He was simply making a point of the man's qualities that other people can relate to. Most Americans don't have foreign policy experience. Foreign policy experience is good for someone running for president, and him having life experiences let the public know he understands everyday people.

The Truth Always Comes Out   August 25th, 2008 7:34 pm ET

I am very proud of the Americans that have continued to do the job of the mainstream media by forcing equal discussion about John McCain’s faux pas, missteps and outrageous panderings in this campaign.

Keep doing what you are doing. If ABC, CNN, CBS & NBC won’t force fair and equitable treatment on McCain … [maybe because he is 72?] it is YOUR DUTY to continue to hold him and his campaign accountable for how they act, what they say and what they do.

Just remember to be succinct, give the facts – not opinion, list sources, references, dates. Be vigiliant, don’t let anything slide by. It’s perfectly OK to have an edge, have some swagger and to have a tone … the other side sure does.

But let’s always take the high road and drop so many of the Mc _____ monikers for John McCain. Sure, I find some of them amusing but we want to pull a rainbow of undecided Democrats, Independents, and Republicans to our side. Let’s make sure we hit McCain harder than he hits our guy. Obama can elevate this debate if we are on guard against the “low blows”. In the end, our man Obama will remove McCain’s political heart … and John won’t even feel it until it’s too late.

KenB, MI   August 25th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

This is excellent…the media has covered Biden…why would Obama have a need to repeat what the American people know…spending his time focused on the issues and chipping away at McCain's McBush enterior is key during the DNC and moving on into November.

All these bogus attacks have the air of a large force attacking, they should be evaded…keep chipping away. Obama-Biden '08

My friends, good character is something you don't get more of with experience. Either you have it or you don't. Obama has it, Biden has it.

Let me give you some REAL straight talk… Obama is emphasizing that good character, honesty, moral integrity is why Biden was his pick, and not because of his extensive experience.

douadavid,PA   August 25th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Finally, Obama has shown us his dumbest mistake in his life. As soon as he chose Joe biden as his ruuning mate , he lost the election. You don't have to have an education to know 20 million voters are more than one thousand voters. He talks and talks but he never walks and walks. His promise of unifying the country has been broken into billion
pieces and will never be able to put those pieces together again. The only choice for American now is to vote for our Hero John Mcain.
Democrat for John Mcain.

Mike from Florida   August 25th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

and just another one of thesegigantic blunders:
Obama only said "But you know the most important thing about Joe Biden?", beside his other qualifications;
Then CNN "translates": Obama downplays(!!!) Biden's major qualifications!"
Downplays!!! I really wonder when the Democrats will finally make this one-sided journalism an issue. Of course the worst is the Republican mouthpiece foxnews, but CNN and usatoday and many others are not much better.

1. Muslim never deny their faith. Its considered very disrespectful and in some countries a crime punished by death.

2. Michelle Obama would need to keep her head covered and not expose her legs…let alone address a global audience tonight.

Please people…at least make reasonable arguments or just say I'm prejudice or racist. Better yet…go to your trailer and wait to vote for John McCain in November. But don't look even more stupid than you already are.

ClintonDem4Cynthia08   August 25th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

The Republican Party of Texas released a Web video Friday seizing on the story, in response to Obama’s earlier ad mocking John McCain for allegedly not knowing how many homes he and his wife Cindy own.

“Barack Obama has viciously attacked John McCain and his family for being successful and living the American dream,” the narrator says, as the ad then flashes up pictures of Obama body surfing and golfing.

“Obama claims he is looking out for our families in an economic downturn, but ask yourself this: If Obama cares so much about your family, why doesn’t he take care of his own family first?”

The ad then shows a picture of Obama’s stately Chicago home, and one of Onyango’s shack.

“Barack Obama lives in this house … while his own brother lives in this one,” the narrator says.

Hans Klingler, political and communications director for the Texas GOP, told FOXNews.com the organization wanted to point out that Obama has a history that still hasn’t been explored, as well as chide him for the Vanity Fair piece.

I worry about this, who is he and what does he actually stand for. There is nothing to go by. He should have given Hillary a nod. I know I will have to vote for McCain first time in my family in over 100 years that anyone would vote republican. there will be many of us first timers this year. What did you do to the Clinton's.

Hillary supporters remember this. If it is perceived that you cost the democrats the election, you can kiss 2012 goodbye. We're tired of you acting like children on a schoolyard who weren't picked to play and now want to take the ball and go home.

I cannot fathom the fortitude of either Hillary or McCain being able to be strong enough and secure enough to pick someone who was anything other than a yes man. I believe it goes to show the depth of Obama's character.

HOW LONG ARE THE PUNDITS ON CNN GOING TO SAY THAT PEOPLE DON'T YET KNOW SEN. OBAMA! I feel like he and his family have been living in my apartment for over a year! What do we know McCain? He doesn't even know how many houses he has. The robot discussion drones on and on.

Hi jack, one word missing!

this is a good ticket for Obama to have an experience advisor who was able to bring changes with legislations and who has not been changed by Washington and who will be able to support the President on the changes that Obama wants to bring to improve our overall standing in the world! People are tired of the cowboy style of the last eight years in diplomacy and foreign policies and the ticket Obama/Biden will bring us to a much better and a new direction for the country.

Bob   August 25th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

How can anyone who has spent 36 years in the Senate, starting with nothing now own a home worth over a million dollars. Do NOT tell me Biden has anything in common with working men and women. Do NOT tell my Obama who less then a few years ago had nothing and NOW lives in a home worth over a million dollars. How does one accumulate so much wealth in such a short time working as a state senator. These two are part of the elite and have nothing in common with me or do they understand the work I have to do just to stay even. And yet they want to raise taxes, incredible.

Obama 08   August 25th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

CNN: Does you "headline makerupper" even read the article. Do you understand the significance of "But the most important…" No wonder it is all over the web to boycott CNN and watch MNBC or C-Span!!

You need to get talking heads that don't have such ego problems.

God Bless Tim Russert! I miss him.

Pascal   August 25th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Chris Welch you are an Idiot! Don't turn Obamas words around. If I were the Chief of CNN I would fire Chris immediately. CNN PRINT THIS!!!

Fella from Chicago   August 25th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

To Realpolitik–Humble…humble? The word doesn't exist in either parties vocabulary. Especially for U.S. Senators. Arrogant, cocky, and oh yes; rich. These are not blue collar people, Whatever roots Joe Biden shared with the common man, he lost somewhere over the last 36 years as a sitting Senator. No knock against him or any other politician, that's just the nature of the business.

Vegas   August 25th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

He has too…. you can't up play them… that would be impossible.

Obama/Biden 08… The Blind Leading the Blind… being followed by the Blinder!

KATHLEEN   August 25th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Biden's Qualifications!!! Great Choice.
End wars. Make Peace.NO DRAFT!!!! Be Fair to the hurting Americans.
Cut out McCains trickery with touting "FAIR TAX" which will
be only for the rich, who care about their own pocketbooks
and NOT AMERICA.
My daughter, who works too hard to pay much attention to
what is going on was asked who she would vote for, replied
Well, Obama will raise my taxes!!!!! She was going to vote
for MCShame!!!!! Oh, my god. McCains ads. That is what some people have time to listen too!!!. Similar to SOUND BITES.She is one of the lucky
ones who makes $10.50 and hour at a bank, who told her
she was overqualified at the time they hired her BECAUSE
SHE HAS A COLLEGE EDUCATION.
The minimum wage is a sin. No different in OUR SOCIETY than
China paying nothing to their hard working people!!!! MINIMUM
WAGE IS A SIN. BUT IT MAKES WAL-MART AND THE OIL COMPANIES RICHER. LET'S VOTE FOR CHANGE PEOPLE.
AND, FOR SOME, GET OVER YOURSELVES FOR HILLARY!!!
The primaries are over folks. I will bet you that Obama will
take GOOD CARE OF HILLARY and she knows it!!!!!!!!!!!!

ERIC, MN   August 25th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

I THINK ALL HILLARY SUPPORTERS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM WRITING POSTS ON ANY SITE. WHY SHOULD WE TREAT THEM LIKE ADULTS? IF THEY WANT TO ACT LIKE LITTLE KIDS, THEN I THINK WE SHOULD ALL TREAT THEM THAT WAY.

Cynthia   August 25th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

I don't see it as downplaying Senator Biden. I see it as highlighting a different area of his life – the personal side.

You PUMA need to get a life. You can forget 2012 because there will be plenty of Anybody but Hilliary campaigns out there if Senator Obama happens to lose.

Justin   August 25th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Can you please stop creating misleading headlines?

John in Mlps   August 25th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Ask Obama why he hates Batman?

Dave Venrick   August 25th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

On one of the trailers at the bottom screen, on The Situation Room, it stated that if Obama was elected, he would be the third person from the state of Illinois, after Lincoln and U.S Grant. President Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, not in Illinois. One of 8 Presidents elected from the Great State of Ohio.

McCain's Non-explanation

McCain cannot justify his 23 million claim. We asked McCain spokesman Brian Rogers for substantiation and received the statement that we reprint here. We find it simply won't do.

Rogers starts by saying that Obama's health care proposal to provide coverage for uninsured workers would amount to a "tax," either in the form of higher costs for covering employees or "cash to the government." But McCain was talking about income tax rates, not higher business costs. That's not justifying McCain's claim; that's trying to change the subject.

Great Leadership you can trust

j   August 25th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

uh…SERIOUSLY? are u trying to SERIOUSLY make this a negative statement? you guys are ridiculous. learn some reading comprehension.

Realpolitik   August 25th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

CNN and its irresponsible journalism, he's not downplaying his credentials, he's simply saying he admires him the most for staying humble. Whatever gets you ratings huh CNN?

I know this wont get posted….

Mike   August 25th, 2008 6:48 pm ET
