Sen. John Thune is rumored to be a potential McCain VP.

DENVER (CNN) – Republican Sen. John Thune said Monday that he is not being considered as a vice presidential running mate for Sen. John McCain.

Thune's spokesman confirms to CNN that the South Dakota senator has not given McCain's campaign any documents pertaining to the vice presidential vetting process.

"I would say I'm out of the running," Thune told the Associated Press.

The 47-year-old senator campaigned with McCain earlier this month at the Sturgis Motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Thune - who was an early supporter of McCain's presidential campaign– has often been mentioned as a potential running mate, and on the senator's VP shortlist.

While Thune is telegenic and young, he is also from a state with three electoral votes.

However, Sen. Barack Obama's vice presidential candidate, Sen. Joe Biden, represents Delaware - a state that also carries three electoral votes.

Thune's record on free trade may have also hurt his chances.

In a year that McCain is highlighting his support for free trade initiatives, Thune's legislative record shows that he voted against the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

John McCain is turning into a real life cartoon character. His caricature is two large thumbs with two bugeyes and a squirrels mouth spouting nuts.

A vote for McCain is a vote for your youth to be fighting in wars for 100 years...be careful, the draft is coming to a loved one near you!

Millie   August 25th, 2008 8:55 pm ET

If Mccain were smart, he would choose Hillary.

Unfortunately, this is not going to be the year of the elephant.

KATHLEEN   August 25th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Who cares who McDraft chooses?

Republicans for Obama   August 25th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Who??

McCain can't pick Leiberman or any other pro-choice candidate.

He can only pick the Mormon. He has to shore up his base.

Simple political strategy. Mavericks need not apply.

McDraft   August 25th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

The question is what has happened to John McCain since 2004

Mad   August 25th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Can you posters get a life and stop saying no one cares? Just because you people post OMG LIKEZ OBAMAS GOD – doesn't mean people don't read stuff on John McCain- fact is people do care and I enjoy reading these pieces so shut it.

I really want McCain to pick a woman just to show the Dems off this year.

Dia   August 25th, 2008 7:52 pm ET

CNN want more drama, more wars, that why they are pushing for Mccain to be at the White House. It's all about ratings. Crisis in the world means good rating for cnn. very cheap

M. Felder   August 25th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

To you conservatives who have embraced John McCain. How is it that you are able to accept him as a conservative when John McCain has not confessed Jesus as his lord and savior or has not been baptized. I am suspect of his faith.

Marie   August 25th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Who Cares?

Lacy   August 25th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

If McCain were smart, he's pick Condi.

NClaw441   August 25th, 2008 7:42 pm ET

Tom, 4 years ago everyone on the dem side was practically begging John Kerry to choose McCain as HIS VP. There was a lot of support behind it, including a pretty high level of support from .... Joe Biden.

What has happened since 2004 to make dems say "no one cares about john mccain."???

The dems have once again stepped in it...

Fun to watch

tom ny   August 25th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

CNN loves McCain   August 25th, 2008 7:25 pm ET
