Former VA Governor Mark Warner gave the keynote address at the DNC in Denver.

A powerful speech from Mark Warner, who is going to come out of this convention as the "next Democrat," much like Barack Obama himself emerged from the Democratic convention four years ago.

The election Obama can win is not one about who has the experience to lead the world in the most dangerous moment in history - That's the election we Republicans would like.

Watch: Waner says this is 'the most important contest' of our generation

The election Obama can win is a race between the past and future, and Warner framed that election better than anyone else this year except perhaps Barack Obama himself.

The structure of the old world we knew is gone. No longer is America the unchallenged economic leader of the world. No longer is our security challenged by only one formidable Soviet adversary. Warner told America tonight that we face a new generation of challenges, implying we need a new generation of leaders to meet them.

What he didn't tell us is that behind the new rhetoric, there are still the same old industrial age policies: Warner closed his budget gap in Virginia by persuading liberal republicans to join him in raising taxes. Today Obama promises just the same.

It started out hard for the democrat following Hillary Clinton, despite their being the key note speaker. Warner did not deliver.

2016 for sure!

LeftNut : you're delusional. This speech sent the Obama Ship off to sea to steer it's own course. When they sink no one will blame the cast off.

mdrift   August 27th, 2008 1:27 am ET

Save the "Next Democrat" CNN for your own delusions.

Clinton isn't going to step aside, again.

Alex Who?   August 27th, 2008 1:09 am ET

Republican strategist Alex somebody criticizes successful Democratic governor because.......well, something about being successful that bugs Republicans.

Notice how many SUCCESSFUL DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS spoke tonight. Imagine that kind of leadership in the White House.

To all those who say that Mark Warner's speech was great–did you actually watch it? It was BORING. As a native Virginian, I was quite disappointed.

Hillary is the best and the woman who should be president! :)

But, it is not Hillary's job to unify the party!

That is Obama's job! He could have unified the party but he chose not to. He has very poor judgment! :(

And, Barack chose Biden's to be the attack dog/VP not Hillary!

Unfortunately, Obama's arrogance and belief in his own infallibility have undermined his party and his future! Barack, the user, will lose!

Today, he was out on the stump obfuscating, prevaricating and bluffing! He doesn't get it, and he doesn't have a clue!

The democrats blew it big time this election!

This former democrat will vote for McCain 08! Country comes before party and John McCain is a moderate in touch with mainstream America! :)

Roy, The fact that policies worked in the past doesn't mean they are meant for the present or the future. We are no longer in the industrial age. The industrial age was extremely inefficient with resources, but it did bring innovation. The new policies, which I think Obama is understanding, is that innovation should become more efficient. So conserve resources at no cost to innovation, probably even a boon to it.

tammy for VA   August 27th, 2008 12:43 am ET

Warner is good. Clinton is great! I want to see her in office. She has convinced me not to vote for McCain. Obama will need to convince me to vote for him. The ball is in your court Obama...though I am from VA...pretend I am from the show me state.

Please don't compare Warner's speech to the one Obama gave in 04 as the "next democrat".

Warner was OK, not the breath-taking, spell-binding, soaring speech Obama gave 4 years ago.

Lune   August 27th, 2008 12:25 am ET

All I heard is Hillary campaigning for herself. No talk about Obama value, toughness, nothing. If Obama lost you can bet the other 18,000,000 cracks who vote for him in the primary will not say anything but will not vote for her.

pam Eugene OR   August 27th, 2008 12:12 am ET

Thank you Hillary. You did what you NEEDED to do to regain my respect.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   August 27th, 2008 12:07 am ET

Warner is too moderate and pro-gun for the liberal left to ever look @ for President.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 27th, 2008 12:06 am ET

I bet Elmer Fudd I mean John McCain's blood pressure went so high after hearing Hillary tonight until he's on bed rest. But wait, the best is yet to come. Let McCain keep running them "silly" little ads that he's using as a front instead of doing some serious homework like trying to memorize what he needs to talk about or has he forgotten already.

Pound Gap VA native   August 26th, 2008 11:58 pm ET

Mark Warner is a republicans nightmare.

He would not only win Virginia in a presidential election, but West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas. He is a Southern Governor who will be president someday soon. Southern Governor who is president......sound familiar

OBA-DEN 08   August 26th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Warner gave a great speech, from the parts I caught on c-span, I've got to watch the whole thing online, Making the Band 4 was on! lol, that's bad.

Edgar - Orlando   August 26th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Warner 2016? (Obama will be President, and said that he would run for 2nd term). I don't know about that...

FROMHILLARYTOMCCAIN.COM   August 26th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

Obama not picking Hillary will be the reason he will lose. He chose Biden...who never won a state primary in running for President...35 years in the Senate and no achievements...

Hillary 2012!!! Obama will lose and will be the next Edwards/Kerry!!! An afterthought.

The Dems lose again.

A Dem Shame!!!

Hillary, or McCain 08!

mrsb   August 26th, 2008 11:47 pm ET

No way, no how, no McCain! Tennessee went to Hillary – let's get behind Obama and pay back the debt as we failed to deliver for our native son Gore in 2000 !. And Virginia, our neighbor, Warner was great – Obama needs Virginia to be behind him.

FROMHILLARYTOMCCAIN.COM   August 26th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

I would like to hear any "intelligent" democrat say,

"I worked hard for Hillary, and thank her for her effort, but my loyalty lies with the Democratic party."

Wait, and please wait!

Is the Democratic party about the Clintons (i.e., Hillary) or the Democratic Party?

Why did the Clintons not dominate the Gore and Kerry nomination processes? Gore was Bill's VP for 8 years…

America has, and continues to take advantage of the Black Man!! Americans may be blind to this fact, but the WORLD that is watching America is NOT blind! A Black Man fought hard and won, plain and simple!!!!

McCain – Not a Maverick = a Sidekick! tooo, tooo good. Look folks, prudent stewardship of government is about getting the budget you need and managing the resources the best you can. Republicans have failed in almost 20 of the last 30 years, yet you still here them calling us tax and spend liberals. well, thank you, governor, I'll take prudent and fair fiscal management over rhetoric anyday...

Danny in Chicago   August 26th, 2008 11:26 pm ET

I thought the man from Montana was VERY GOOD, much better than this man and the crowd was very much into it.

Eric   August 26th, 2008 11:25 pm ET

Warner gave a HORRIBLE speech and no where near what Obama did in 2000. Hillary has given the best speech of the convention so far and if Obama goes on to lose she HAS to be considered whole heartedly in 2012. Sorry to say but I don't think Biden's speech will even be as good.

Julian Tynes   August 26th, 2008 11:24 pm ET

I thought Deval Patrick's speech was better than Warner's. Patrick spoke about the future but he also spoke about ways to achieve that future. (Early childhood education, better healthcare system, alternative energy development, etc.) In addition Patrick spelled out some of the issues created by the Republican policies such as the soaring federal deficit, the lack of educational funding to achieve the goals of NCLB, the lack of healthcare coverage among so many Americans, and the lack of a commitment to the environment and alternative energy development. Warner spoke about his success in Virginia but he did not tie in the current economic malaise to the current administration nor did he define the fundamental differences the two parties have in their approach to the issues facing our Nation.

Ann   August 26th, 2008 11:24 pm ET

I guess CNN censors don't want to post anything that points out the hypocrisy of Obama's message.

dustin   August 26th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

warner sucked. you consistently have no idea what you are talking about.

Roy   August 26th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

I don't understand the knock against "old industrial age policies." The FACT is that Warner and the Virginia legislature turned a deficit into a surplus and have transformed Virginia into both a prosperous state and high-tech haven. If old policies work, then that's great. One has to be a narrow-minded ideologue to criticize such broad success just because it happened to come from policies on the other side of the aisle.

4 more months too much   August 26th, 2008 11:04 pm ET

Hillary asked those that supported her to vote for something bigger then just her or themselves. To vote for what she stood for and continues to stand for, not just an image of her in office. To bring this country back to it's glory with president Obama and the Democratic family, which obviously includes a big role for her.

Can her supporters be strong enough to do that? I respect her for all she's done and what she's said tonight. I only hope those people, that truly are democrats, can be strong enough for all of us, the way she has been.

Tom in Delaware   August 26th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

Hey, this guy's good, too bad you couldn't put him up against McCain, he'd give him a run for his (allright...your's, mine, Cindy's, etc.) money.

Hillary forgot to take back the part about Barack not being fit to lead in her speech tonight,,,that's a big OOPS. The rest of her speech is very lackluster so far.

Hers is an impossible task because it's so difficult to meet the tremendous expectations that are placed by so many different people on her and her supporters.

Day 1 of the DNC saw McCain break into the lead in the Gallup Poll.
Day 2 will see that lead widen based on what I've seen tonight.

Bad days ahead for the Democratic Party.

Regular Joe   August 26th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

So Castellanos, you don't want taxes raised, what do you want McCain to cut to balance the budget? Or do you just want to keep borrowing and say "What me worry?"

cellisis   August 26th, 2008 10:59 pm ET

No McCain and No Bama, and it's too bad that we don't have another choice!

Adam from NY   August 26th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

I was thinking the same thing; he was really terrific.

Sandi from Ada, MI   August 26th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

"fear...raising taxes...he said-she said...blah-blah-blah..."

Virginia is a great example where the Republican talking points just don't fly.

Mark Warner was a young technology and science-friendly leader, with little political experience. He had big ideas, he was willing to ask more from his people than past leaders...and he worked across the aisle to get things done. He made his state a huge success story. Mark Warner is PROOF the future will be better with a leader like him.

Barack Obama is like Mark Warner. John McCain is like George W. Bush.

4 more months too much   August 26th, 2008 10:58 pm ET

Thanks Sandy, create more votes for McCain, nice job!

You know what, I'm sitting here thinking, now that we know a woman can make it that far, can actually do it... it won't matter what happens with Obama in the general, If Hillary runs in 2012, she'll win.

Matthew   August 26th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Jesus– how screwed are we?

Scott L   August 26th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

Warner skyrocketed our taxes here in VA, why are you people idolizing him? Just another politician who jacked up our taxes and is taking our hard earned money. What is the point of getting a raise or bonus if the government just keeps taking more and more. ENOUGH!

gtekam   August 26th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

"Industrial Age" policies like paying as we go, instead of shafting our children.

The Republicans had their turn. They failed.

We got next.

Matt B   August 26th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

WHEN are the media and the republicans going to realize that it is NOT the messenger (Obama) but the MESSAGE – CHANGE ! CHANGE ! CHANGE !!!

Many Americans can not take another four years of a lousy economy, stagnant wages, and skyrocketing fuel, health care, and grocery costs. And President McCain promises another four years of the same.

Warner's speech was great, it highlighted all the new challenges facing America as well as Obama's main weakness, his inexperiance. Because I care so much for my country, even enlisting in the Air Force to protect my country that I feel it is my duty to write in Hillary. I will not throw away my security over "party unity."

Will Obama supporters vote for Hillary should she run again?
maybe. maybe not.

Look. It's really simple. It's about TAX FAIRNESS. How is it fair for someone who can barely keep body and soul together to pay more taxes as a percentage than a multi-millionaire?

THAT'S what Senator Obama is fighting for: TAX FAIRNESS!

GO BAMA!

Clinton Supporter   August 26th, 2008 10:41 pm ET
