Jindal may skip the GOP convention.
Jindal may skip the GOP convention.

(CNN) – Hurricane Gustav, currently moving toward the Gulf of Mexico, may force Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to skip next week’s Republican Convention.

Three years to the week since Hurricane Katrina battered the Louisiana coast, some forecast models suggest the storm could pose another threat to the state next week.

Jindal, reported to be on John McCain's shortlist for VP, told reporters in Baton Rouge Tuesday afternoon he will not go to St Paul if the storm continues to move in a northwesterly track toward his state.

Considered to be a rising star in the Republican Party, Jindal is scheduled to deliver a high-profile address in prime time at the convention next Wednesday. But he said, “My first priority is with the state of Louisiana. Certainly if the storm continues to come our way, I’ll change my travel plans.”

Louisiana officials along with local and federal authorities face criticism for their preparation and response to Katrina in 2005, before Jindal was in office. He said his would make sure he was in place ahead of the storm’s potential arrival, saying, “Days before the storm, we’ll make sure that we and our local partners are fully prepared.”

Mike, TX   August 26th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Chad,

Jindal is a sitting governor. He is not the VP nominee, nor does it appear that he will be.

Obama is the one without experience. Experience counts in the repubican party, apparently not the case for the dems.

They can all skip the Republican Convention for all I care!!!

larry wi   August 26th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

That's what I call dedication, Nobama has to settle for his wife, Hillary, and Hillbillie because he can't get anyone else, where McCain may have to resort to others because they have more pressing issues at hand. See the differance Nobama supporters.

Andy   August 26th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Quite a few "big" Republicans are not going to the convention this year. Even Norm Coleman said he wouldn't be going if it weren't being held in his home state.

You know the GOP is in trouble, when they are bragging about receiving a "celebrity endorsment" from Wilford Brimley…..SAD.

Who is Wilfor Brimley you ask….My point exactly.

Vote Democrat and get real results.

Now why is it important that "Daddy Yankee" supports McCain? How funny is this and who in the hell is he? Besides being from Puerto Rico and cheated on his wife…(wait now I get the comparison)…lol…This endorsement means nothing for the white voters, just more reasons to raise concern over his immigration policies.

If Gov. Jindal can make a difference for the hard-hit residents of Lousiana, more power to him! Maybe he can put in an appearance at the Republican convention by satellite or cable? Taking care of his state is certainly more important than scoring political points.

D.R.   August 26th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

This Guy should be President! At least he has intelligence and is a Governor. Sen. Obama the most liberal senator in history ignored 18 Million voters when he chose Biden as veep. Yeah, that's right 18 Million voters! Sen. Clinton has experience and voted for the war, just like Biden, but she got votes. How many delegates did Biden get in the Primaries? ZERO.

It is obvious Obama lacks the experience and judgment to pick a running mate. I mean how smart do you have to be to choose from one who received 18 millions of votes to another getting a few hundred?

Obama has caused disunity. We need to vote Clinton at the convention! It is not too late! I will support McCain if she is not on the ticket. Oh guess what, she is not on the ticket.

Dems untie...   August 26th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

This is actually not "Mother Nature gets even" as you may think. The RNC put the convention on stand-by. Yes, money will be lost- like that's a problem for a Republican. The party says McCain is their man in a short, but unified demonstration. Shows more unified support for any area pre-strike and eventually struck by the hurricane with aid. Lets Jindal prove he's a true leader. Points finger at Dems saying they needed their convention cause their party is in shambles and disaray. Enjoy.

NoMcSame   August 26th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

They pray for it to rain on the DNC Convention and what happens? God sends the storms to every state that a republican governs. He even dropped a little water on FOX TV. Ha ha ha.

There goes the GOP– watrch out you old white haired men–LOL

Reality Check   August 26th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Here's the thing, folks. Those of you calling to unite the party need to understand it's Obama's role to do so. The Clintons can only do so much. If he's a great leader, he'll prevail. Some simple things…

1. Stop bashing the Clintons. We've endured this for months (its been on both sides) and you will not make any friends by continuing this. He was the most popular president in modern history and I personally remember Bill keeping his word on many issues. We also prospered and we haven't had that for a long time. Like him or not, his legacy deserves some respect. Respect others.

2. Obama needs to put Hillary in an important position in his administration. Does he owe her anything? No. Does he need to acknowledge that more of the core democratic party felt Hillary was a better choice? Yes. So far, he has done little to try to convince us he's ready. It's his job to convince me – I've already heard from Hillary. By acknowledging Hillary in a key position many of the PUMAs will calm down as they feel they have been heard. Does he want to be elected or not? Most important goal should be to win, above everything else.

3. Obama needs to convince us he has sound judgement. I don't know about you, but having a friend for 20 years that is like an uncle and not knowing he was a preacher of hate? How many times has he been quoted "He's not the man I knew" and for how many people? The presidency is a big job. I need to know our president is a good judge of character. He's got a lot of work here yet.

4. He deeply criticized Hillary for her vote on the Iraq war…but ironically Biden cast the same vote as Hillary. Now I feel he thinks this is OK now because Americans are more worried about the economy than the war? I'm not sure if this is smart or an example of poor judgment. He needs to explain himself here. This isn't something Hillary can do for him…he has to earn my vote.

PRinNJ   August 26th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

I was just reading thje previous thread on "The Clintons Prepare". Comments are closed ,but there is something that needs to be said. A writer identifying himself as "John in Ohio" talked about voting for Sen Obama in Columbus, Ohio. That did not happen. This is obviously a bogus post and its very existance calls into question the validity of all "drum beating" posts, whichever side of any given issue they support. These blogs were a good media in the early days, but they have lost all significance due to the large population of bulk posters with an agenda.

My prayers are for Louisiana and coastal states to get thru this season without a hurricane. Governor Jindal would make a great VP. He has more experience than the selected one Obama.

Tom, KS   August 26th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

Why is it CNN spent the last 25 minutes playing and talking about various McCain propaganda commercials only to follow it up with Glenn Beck nocking on Barack and Hillary some more? They're doing McCains dirty work themselves. I really think it's becoming clearer and clearer that the people in control of the media of this country want nothing more then to keep us moving in a downward spiral. I resent the way they've been giving these republican pundits free reign to make any accusation they like without calling them out on the facts. Republicans are willing to spout pure poison just to see their cronies keeping control of our countries really disturbing to watch.
LETS TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY NOW!
VIVA OBAMA

Tim   August 26th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

He was never on McCain's short list. McCain would lose some of his base because Bobby Jindal is a person of color. Also, he was a Muslim and you know how that is played in the media. Also he stated that Huricane Ketrina did not damage the oil platforms off the coast. He was dead wrong. It was the worst spill ever. He should have read up before he got the job.

All those ACTIVE democrats will wake up after election night to listen to another incompetent and senile man keep the status quo in the White House and this nation. Perhaps even turn BACK the clock on minority and women's rights. So, let them go ahead and vote for McCain.

People should NOT forget that Obama had more than 18 million votes– that is why he won fair and square; so, if he loses this election, no democrat (not even Hillary or Chelsea) will be president of the U.S. for the next 8 years; plain and simple!!!!

Jindal is willing to make personal sacrifices for his state. Obama vacations in Hawaii and expects Hillary to unite the party. And texts out some generic sound bite over the Russian invasion of Georgia. Other than that what has Obama done?

BillShneiderDaMan   August 26th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Jindal alone has more experience and quick judgment to handle a crisis better than Obama. Obama's slow reaction to Russian's invasion of Georgia should be a preview of the inept president Obama would be.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   August 26th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

First they criticize Barack for being "inexperienced"; although he has served in the Senate for almost 12 years at the state and national levels (yes far more experienced then Billary or Jindal)….He is also about 10 years the Senior of Jindal.

I'd hardly call being Governor of a state (Louisiana) that ranks near the bottom of everything-a great Resume to run for Prez.

Are the Republicans positioning Jindal for 2012, the same way Obama was positioned in 2004?

Beverly, NYC   August 26th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

Don't feel bad "Bobby" you're not the only one to miss the republican convention. I 'm sure if the Republican party needs their token person of color they can satellite feed you in.

voter   August 26th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

August 26th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

I am voting for John McCain since Hillary Clinton is not the democratic elective for President. I will never vote for OBAMA.
Anne Romero,

Why don't sign up for the war. It is hyporcritical to vote for McCain and not enlist for the war. A vote for McCain is a vote for more war. So enlist. better yet enlist your husband and your children if they are of age.

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 4:13 pm ET

KICK ROCKS!

Mad   August 26th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

See this is the guy I wanted as V.P. because of things like this- he was the only Republican to actually do anything about Katrina and got no credit.

Spencer from VA   August 26th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Joe Biden will eat Jindel for brunch. He better stay in Louisiana where he is going to be needed. Here's some strategy Republicans. If Jindel can be the first on the scene if and when Hurricane Gustov hits, he may be seen as a hero………NOT!!!

Obama/Biden 08/12

Voter   August 26th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

Be careful what you pray for.

jen   August 26th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

McCNN why are you not asking all those familiar questions about McCain that last week you were so obsessed with when concentrating on Obama. Why can't McCain close the deal?..What can McCain do to gain more support from Hispanics?…What can McCain do to improve his standing with women…Who does McCain need to pick to help him with all of Huckabees supporters. Why is McCain struggleing getting over 45% in most polls…etcetera, etcetera ,etcetera………………………….

18,000,000 plus the disenfranchised   August 26th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

If McCain elects Jindal as his VP,we'de rather see him staying with his State during a crisis. It will be perfectly acceptable to see Jindal accept the nomination ,in a raincoat in LA.

U.S. Common Sense   August 26th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

That would be an interesting situation if McCain does tap Jindal, but due to the storm Jindal would not be able to address the convention nor do any significant campaigning if New Orleans were to have a repeat flood as it did in 2005. I cannot think of any "modern" Presidential election where the VP did not address the Convention nor campaigned. (NOTE: I do not think Jindal will be the VP nominee.)

Tony   August 26th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Rising star in the Republican Party. Give me a break. There are no stars in teh republican party, just liars, crooks, theives, etc.

I'd love for the pics of Bush at the Olympics to come out, the Steven's issue, and a lot of other things to be brought up at the convention.

I certainly hope that quite a few service men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the spouses of those who were killed or wounded, get an opportunity to speak and bash Bush/Cheney!

galactic def klingon   August 26th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

I bet his silly Mayor down in New Orleans–will be there to shuck and jive though.

John   August 26th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

With all of his connections in the Republican party, couldn't he just get someone else to act as caretaker for the state, lest the hurricane arrive? What is Brownie doing nowadays?

Alex V- NJ   August 26th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

I don't agree with this guy often as he is a conservative republican and I am not, however I have to say he has the right idea staying in his state with a hurricane coming. That shows leadership to me.

Anonymous   August 26th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Oh don't blame the hurricane, he doesn't want to attend that boring convention…hahahahahahaha

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 26th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

What's left in Louisiana hasn't been prepared so what's all this political posturing with Jindal.

DAN   August 26th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

He's doing the right move, safety and security first. This is a politician who is responsible unlike Obama who never held one oversight meeting on Afganhistan because he's to busy running for president.!

Ace   August 26th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Guess what CNN? Jindal took himself out of consideration for McCain's VP a few months ago. Maybe you need to do your research.

Brian, Pittsburgh   August 26th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

What a horrible reminder of Hurrican Katrina during the Republican convention!

I hope this hurricane doesn't cause much damage.

Anonymous   August 26th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I'm sure he's a decent guy and everything, but that picture…yikes.

JJ   August 26th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Good idea!

Independent-Minded American   August 26th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Obama wannabe

Mike - Texas   August 26th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Yah, he gets stuck with straightening out what the prior democratic govenor and mayor did.

This time Lousiana will be ready.

newsnut   August 26th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

The strength of the Democratic Party is their enduendos. The unibombers of spin stories. They spend all day talking about things that might happen, could happen, not yet but almost sure. Give it a couple of months, Our Journalist say the signs are there.

Doug R.   August 26th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I never heard of this man. So he doesn't make the convention, who cares.

Tony   August 26th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Well, I guess that rules him out as V.P. or he'd be here now!

becca   August 26th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

I am starting to like this guy Jindal more and more each day.

Do you think he would consider becoming a Democrat?

SS   August 26th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Although I am a Democrat, I cannot help but admire this man. He has achieved so much at such an young age. If he ever runs for office, I might be inclined to vote for him. I wish Obama had such a strong resume, I would have felt much better in supporting an young president.

Joel   August 26th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

McCain is an old idiot that will further ruin this country. You know the stuff that has happened over the past eight years does not bother me. It doesn't bother me because I never voted for Bush so it's not my fault. The people who are to blame for the shape of the country are the ones who kept the republicans in power.

vic nashville,Tn   August 26th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Jindal is a Great Governor and he is good human
He will do the best for his state
Life long democrat and strong Hillary supporter voting for Mc Cain

Monica for Obama in Indiana   August 26th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Good call Governor Jinda.

Obamalism   August 26th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

This guy will lead the resurgence of the 'real' republican party in the next decade. If he can clean house in louisiana, he can do it anywhere.

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

the republican are going to loose this year

Vegas   August 26th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Hopefully people will pay attention to the warnings this time…

This looks like it could be a pretty intense one…

terri ohio   August 26th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I toially agree with everything rupupican but god bless him and his state

Kelby from Houston, TX   August 26th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Oh! A hurricane is a real good excuse to miss the Repug convention. All the other GOP members say that they have tight races to win and they can't make the convention. A natural disaster is way better excuse. So, who IS showing up to the Repug party? Oh that's right Bush Cheyney Romney….and who cares.

Ann Romero   August 26th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

I am voting for John McCain since Hillary Clinton is not the democratic elective for President. I will never vote for OBAMA.

Shari, NY   August 26th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

This hurricane is turning into a monster. I pray that everyone in its path will be protected. I detect nervousness on the part of players in the oil industry. Look for prices to start going up soon folks, and don't forget to check for tire pressure. Every little bit helps.

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

oh another republican skipping their convection

Tony Z-MD   August 26th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Baby Jindal gets his first test. Lets see what happens. Is he ready????

V   August 26th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

The Repubublican party needs more people like Jindal….maybe then they can get back on track

Texas Straight Talker   August 26th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Where are the issues? Why aren't we discussing that instead of who did or didn't win or get the respect they felt they deserved? We are so off message and caught up in these catfights which at the end of the day have not done one thing to make this country better! Our economy is on the rocks, gas prices are through the roof, AND to make matters worse, these petty distractions are giving the Republicans a cakewalk into the White House! We had better think about what is important!

Chad, Wisco   August 26th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

The Repubs are grooming Jindal big time. Only difference I see between him and Obama is experience. Oh wait, that no longer counts for anything in this country.

mijnos   August 26th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

Jindal '12 & '16

Mark Wagner   August 26th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

With Jindal gone, looks like the RNC is going to be a old-white-male fest.

rob   August 26th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Mother Nature getting even with the GOP

Casey - Missouri   August 26th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Maybe it's God's wrath… (to use Hagee and Parsley terms) because he's tired of the lies Jindal's been telling so often on TV lately.

Rudy NYC   August 26th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

George W. Bush teaches by leading.

Jindal seems to have enough "experience" to make the right choice, even though he may never experienced a hurricane as LA Gov. I wonder how he was able to do that.

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

there wont be people coing to the rnc looks like its already ruined
