Obama’s daughters and convention goers were surprised with a video feed of the Illinois senator.

DENVER (CNN) –
Walking out onto the convention stage to deliver her speech Monday night, Michelle Obama leaned down to daughters Malia and Sasha and told them, “I’ve got a surprise for you.”

“Is it the Jonas Brothers?” 10 year-old Malia asked.

“No, it’s not the Jonas Brothers,” she responded. It was a live video feed of “Daddy” from Kansas City.

“In the end she felt that Daddy was a decent second choice,” Obama told supporters attending an economic roundtable in Denver Tuesday afternoon.

Watch: The Obama daughters talk to their father.

Barack Obama says the girls are big fans of the teen band, and were disappointed when they found out they would be in Denver when the band came through their hometown of Chicago.

The Illinois senator – who often tells parents to monitor the music their children listen to – approves of the tween sensations.

Watch: Obama's daughters steal the show

“They seem wholesome enough,” he told reporters on his campaign plane in early August. “[The girls are] not thrilled that we’re choosing the convention over the Jonas Brothers.”

those of you criticizing the Obamas for having their kids at the convention are the same ones who would be asking "what are they hiding?" if they didn't have their kids there.

AWW SO CUTE HOW THEY THOUGHT OF THE JONAS BROTHERS!! JUST RANDOM LOL!!!

If you don't like Obama, fine, but who the hell has a problem with a 10 and 7 year old? Some of you are seriously heartless people if you are attacking Obama's daughters.

Judy   August 26th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

I would love to see your daugther raise an Child that is ADD and His or her father has been gone seven months of the year for the last four years and you grand child is only seven. We are to teach him that His Dad is defending a country that sames to have a problem supporting a Man that is the same raceas his dad. It appears that it is still ok for us to serve but do not even think about leading.

Deb, Allentown, PA   August 26th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Wow, are you Repubs and PUMAs nasty, bitter, vindictive people. You should all be terribly ashamed of yourself.

Granted, this is not news. It's cute, and that's all. But the vitriol which you display really makes me fear for the future of this country.

Joe in NJ   August 26th, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Well that's it! Anyone who would let their children listen to the Jonas Brothers is not getting my vote! And Miley Cyrus is ugly and sounds like a man!

Nice family. I can't wait till they are in the Whitehouse. We are going to get our country back. Good times are a coming. Be not afraid people,Obama will do us all proud.

i know this is the day for woman, but as a democrat i love condelezza rice, president bush has been on a vacation. but condi has been running the country she's a woman that im proud of to. i love mrs obama as well. my daughter, and granddaughters, neices and daughter in laws can look up to not just hillary..but all the woman who have gave of themselves so much service to this wonderful country of ours.

mom   August 26th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

why we have to see how O. talks to his kids, why these cute little ones are being exploited again? They did not show any better relationship than millions of parents and kids have together. And, I bet there are better families than this one, and worse too. Nothing extraordinary on this family. If it would be, they would not show off this much. Even stars do not publish their kids this much.
I would not do this to my kids.

For sake of your kids, stop using them in politics, on stage. They are still little, and do not even know what to do, what is it about. Let them enjoy their childhood, stop using them. This is not reality show, this is politics.

Peter (CA)   August 26th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Why even put this here, CNN?

It just gives the right-wingers more time to spew hate. Who needs to see that directed at anyone's family?
I guess next week we'll see these stories about McCain's mom.

stephanie   August 26th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

I am a middle age woman and I am tired of hearing about these sour old women who are still harping about Hillary Clinton and still not over it on her loss. GET OVER IT!!! They seem to fit the profile of single older woman who probably are divorced and hate men. They need to not be sour anymore and move forward

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

the republicans can say all they want it wont work this time obama going to win landslide

bob   August 26th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I was reading about another article where some McLame supporters were talking about how much experience Mc Cain has over Obama….But they never say what kind of experience. Could it be experience in failing to secure a nomination for commander in chief. Could it be experience in failed marriage. Could it be experience as a POW which should help us alot in the current war and future ones. Experience in healthcare, economy, home forclosures, etc.

The experience excuse is no longer valid since Obama has Biden's 35 years of government and foreign policy.

What the peanut gallery republicans don't realize is that Obama has a better staff than McWar. People that are well organized and very capable of handling the current issues that we are faced with. When I look at Mc Shame, I think of JibJab.com

I agree with Charles. CNN is pro McCain, aleast the ones in charge at CNN are. Most other media outlets practice more fairminded reporting so they probably won't print this.

Sandy   August 26th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

When Chelsea made appearances with HRC, it was pimping her out, with the Obamas it's soooooo cute. Remember, we never even heard Chelsea speak until she was 27 yrs. old. The Obamas give a 7 yr old the mic.

A. H. Williams   August 26th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Why aren't you using John Roberts on night time prime convention coverage? He is much better than most of you, has years of convention experience, and is on a first name basis with Joe Biden and many Washington insiders. Are you afraid that he will show the rest of you up?

I believe I have more in common with Michelle Obama than i do Hillary. I am a first generation college graduate of immigrant parents. My parents were both factory workers who worked hard to put their children through college. I used to like the Clintons ( along time ago) but no more. Thye have their own agendas and forget abt everyone else. No Clinton in 08, 12 or any other time ever! They have brought about enough disgrace, disrespectfulness, and lies to last a lifetime.

I've Had Enough! How do you people live with yourselves?   August 26th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

This a fluff article meant to point out the single mindedness of our youth during what is a tumultuous time to us grown-ups, and some of you DISGUSTING people have to nerve to attack two little girls?!?!?!

I truly hope God never blessed you with children of your own. I pray for them if they have to have parents like you who are called to raise them to be upstanding decent citizens. Wouldn"t be surprised if they have no respect for you at all!

GROW UP!!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08-12

Charles   August 26th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Most of the people post on the forum are reidculous. They are a nice family. You may disagree with his policies but you can deny this is close connected family.

As for the people claiming CNN is pro Obama has to be more honest with themselves. There is only two stations [tv or radio] that are left leaning which is MSNBC and Air America. Cnn is right of center. There may be more talk about obama but a lot more negative topics.

I mean is there really a riff between hillary and barack. Maybe, but cnn makes it sound like this is the issue in the campaign. Every time McCain opens his mouth it never gets covered.

I hardly ever see CNN talk about his awful veteran voting record and the ratings he gets from all the veteran organizations. I never see them talk about all the horrible jokes he tells about rape and bombin iran. I never see them talking about the fact that he came back from the POW camp and left his wife who was in a terrible car accident and then married a younger rich woman hmmm

CNN never talks about McCains energy policy where he gives a prize for someone to develop a car battery but doesnt say that who will invest millions of dollars to win that prize and that most money given to research is for the resarch and not for the end product.

IF CNN wanted to be pro obama they could…..trust me there would be a lot of ammo

Charlene, CA   August 26th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

I've come to the conclusion that truely most americans are racist, sadistic and just plain inhumane. Say what you will about Barack and Michelle, but to condemn sending little girls to the moon like that narcisstic tool "Marge Hibbing Mn" said, is just pathetic and cowardly. Why why why are you picking on young and innocent children for God's sakes? Whats wrong with you people? Disgusting. People like this just show how simple minded and inferior they are. They act like they're so tough behind a computer screen. Pathetic..

Tatjana   August 26th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Reading these comments one wouldn't think that there is an upcoming election at a very crucial time in America.
Obama's kid's are without question very cute but do they really have to be part of the political campaign.?
I find Obama extremely immature and inexperienced and Biden will not be able to fill that void .
What really is Obama's message now , running on change won't do the trick anymore , he has changed his mind too often , or perhaps that is what he meant.

CM   August 26th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Some people on here complain about everything. If the kids didn't come in stage they would probably say that Michelle was neglecting them.

Didn't Hillary and Bill expose Chelsea to the political campaign trail early on? She turned out ok.

You guys are just a bunch of whiners, hoping that McCain wins and saying it enough so that you can believe yourself. The old man is past his prime and not fit to be president.

G. Rodriguez   August 26th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

For all of those who have made negative comments about this, I can only say how pathetic can you get? It just proves that you can not even acknowledge a wonderful speech and a warm family portrait. Too bad there isn't a Whiners Anonymous, because you all need a meeting. You define immature bitterness.

Lisa   August 26th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

here is a reality check to the people who are using the latest gallup Poll to say McCain is winning.

That poll is based on the 2004 election and who voted. That doesnt include the newly registered voters. Hence the millions who are left out of the poll. If you do a little bit of math , your pea size brain would register the fact that this would mean McCains lead is non existent. He'll lose by 10 points!

Val from MA   August 26th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Very nice post "Clinton, no, wait, McCain Supporter". Obama supporters make me sick to my stomach whenever they open they mouths, but they are just following their chosen one – he is a great example to them.

By the way people: Did you hear Bill Clinton is voting McCain in November?

Go McCain!!!

I thought Obama was not going to "USE" his daughters again. Well they are on the cover of two magazines for September. I guess this another flip. If he did not want his family criticize he should not put them out there. They should have only been there for his speech on Thursday. He is unbelievable even using his young beautiful daughters for political gain.

John and Cindy McCain have given to children all over the world. John McCain's son is serving in Iraq right now. The McCain's have adopted a child and saved her life and given her every opportunity. She is with them right now.

Obama has done none of these things. How dare you say John McCain has no love for small children? Who do you think you are?

And if the love of "small children" is your idea of what makes a good president, we're all in big trouble. Obama uses his kids like props -= just the way he uses everyone else. It's all about HIM.

David W.   August 26th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Billionaire for McCain   August 26th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

I enjoyed this article CNN. I disagree with these haters who think this is not newsworthy. The fact that Obama is just a regular family man and not some secret muslim terrorist celebrity is, surprisingly, news to many people. I appreciate CNN setting the record straight.

Mike Hunt, Delegate from Sealand   August 26th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Haha, some of you are taking this way too seriously. It's a lighthearted little anecdote about a nice family (and a preference many parents might relate to). That's all. It's not news, but it's also clearly not written in a negative way at all. Lighten up people, it's just meant to be FUNNY! :-P

Catherine Sainsbury   August 26th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

When is CNN going to put the same microscope on McCain and his wife that they have on Obama and his wife? I believe that most Americans know more about Obama and his wife than they do about McCain and his. I've noticed this trend for months, not just during the convention. Every possible negative/weak aspect has been raised about Obama and all I've heard about McCain is that he has 7 houses.
What does McCain have to prove during the election? What does he bring to the table that may be different than the previous 8 years of Bush. Sit back and watch yourselves one day.

I would never thought anything negative could be said about Michele Obama's speech or her children. The speech was fantastic and inspirational. I was tearing up while she speaking. The children were absolutely adorable. As the previous poster mentioned…Hillary will need Obama supporters in 2012 and when that happens I certainly will turn the other and the millions other Obama supporters. You all crucified the Clintons when he was having his cigar smoked in the white house and disrespecting his wife and embarrasing her. Yes, that is someone I want leading the country a person who accepts her husband disrespect. Yeah a great role model for women!!!

If you have a beef, Take it out on the parents. Don't attack those kids. They are just kids being kids, they wanted to see the Jonas Brothers, so does every other little girl in America. Get over it.

I am glad CNN showed this. It proves that even in the future First Family, they share the principles and excitment towards everything a normal family would.

I think the best reason to vote for someone for President is that they have cute kids.

One who only likes America for what's in it for HER. One who has been as abrasive as they come, despite her Ivy League pedigree.

A lot of people might make it if they had affirmative action – like a generation of women who did it without such help. I don't admire her. She's taken from others, then rejected America. Now that she sees something in it for her, she's bbaaaaccckkkkk…………..pretending to have suffered and worked and made sacrifices. So have millions of Americans, and nobody picked up their tab on the way out.

I have to admit, those little girls got me smiling and laughing. Yelling in the microphone, "I love you, daddy". Very real, very warm, very American.

Filipina   August 26th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

Beautiful kids, beautiful parents perfect for the next President of the USA.

Chuck   August 26th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

These "girls who will have everything their parents didn't" sure do expect alot. Obviously they are just as spoiled as any other rich kids. "Is it the Jonas Brothers?" Indeed!

Master Yoda   August 26th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Would they be better leaders, hmm? Like them the little girls. Herh herh herh.

joycelyn   August 26th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

CNN you are really becoming a Tabolid news media and it's going to hurt you in the long run. I think you can do better than that. It's nice they wanted the Jonas brothers but am sorry this is not news and most definately should not even be in the politics section. Please do a better job. Thank you.

Hog Wild   August 26th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

This was the most akward part of the whole thing Monday. They missed their queues and their dad did not know which city he was in. How sad.

anonymouys   August 26th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Somehow the Jonas Brothers and the Obama girls seem more sincere than Mr. & Mrs. Obama!

Erika, KS   August 26th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Who cares? This is not news.

California Gold   August 26th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Their youngest daughter is a little fire cracker. LOL!

A beautiful family.

Paris   August 26th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Phil in KC   August 26th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Well, when you're 7 or 10, your priorities don't always align with your parents'.

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 26th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

NG in DC   August 26th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

It was the most annoying use of his kids in front of the camera yet. Obama loves his face on the big screen ….sweetie.

Ardnuas   August 26th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

These girls are so cute and adorable……….Barack and Michelle did a GREAT job as parents. Obama/Biden will be GREAT for America too.

Marge Hibbing Mn   August 26th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

It would be soooooooooooo nice if we could send the obama girls on a long trip maybe to the moon and have obama attached to them…wouldn't that be wonderful…I am so sick of the name obama obama I almost puke when I hear it.

Vegas   August 26th, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Well…. they do have more experience than their Father…

Obama supporters will not forget   August 26th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

You PUMAs need to realize that what goes around comes around – you want to destroy's Obama's chances for this election so that Hillary can run in 2012? I hope you realize that she will then need Obama's supporters on board as well – and what are Obama supporters going to do? We're gonna remember exactaly what you are doing now – Hillary will never be nominated because for how you are all acting towards Obama. You are trying to help and support Clinton but all you are doing is destroying any chances she will have to run for president again.

OBAMA/BIDEN 08 & 12
