From

DENVER (CNN) – The Democrats have been put on the defensive on the energy issue because of McCain’s call for more drilling. What’s the Democrats’ response? You heard it from Secretary Pena just now: renewable energy means more American JOBS.

I've been waiting for someone to answer my question; How does off shore drilling have any revelance to energy independance or gasoline prices, as the oil corps buy the leases from the USA,and as far as I know, they can sell it to whoever they want?So the oil companys, put the oil on the world market and sell it to who they want, how does that help anyone, but big oil? Besides, I understand the refinerys are only working at 85% capacity.

Thanks

Ed   August 27th, 2008 12:55 am ET

C from Texas: do that math. There has been a total of 2 years since Carter that the Dems had control of Congress and the Presidency ('92-'94).

Reagan came to office and tore out the solar panels on the White House roof. The Dems had the foresight to look into renewable energy, but the GOP has stayed in the Stone Age.

Green, affordable, and American made energy please.

John   August 27th, 2008 12:44 am ET

Democrats for McCain!!! Thank-God for a leader like John McCain!! sorry Obama!!

Is it Bill or Brian Schneider? It DON'T matter. I still don't know you.

ex-Republican for Obama   August 26th, 2008 11:35 pm ET

Excellent!!

ohio   August 26th, 2008 11:31 pm ET

And exactly how long does the US Government's Energy Information Administration say it would take for increased domestic offshore drilling to result in any additional oil supply?

Oh, right – 10 years!

Mary from Kentucky   August 26th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I just heard Hilliary 's Speech.
She was suppose to give her delegates to Obama.

Mike, FL   August 26th, 2008 11:05 pm ET

We consume 25% of the world energy and we only have 3% of the oil reserve. You can drill all you want. For that matter, you can drill in my back yard, but that doesn't get us off foreign oil.

We need to invest on renewable energy that will create good paying jobs here in America while protecting the environment and lifting us out of the dependency of foreign oil.

Mr.shine   August 26th, 2008 10:51 pm ET

4 more years of republicans go ahead do it to yourselves!! When you six figure people start losing your homes and eating out of garbage cans. I can't wait for the depression!!!

CNN. When are you going to become the unbiased source for news?
You have headlines that are not true and you seem to like to drive wedges between the candidates.
Do I have to tell you the truth is more interesting than anything you folks could dream up.
Why not produce a good service to humanity as your commitment. Why fall for the Enquirer type journalism?

E.C.Coleman   August 26th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

Obama is a fraud and a loser.........no way is he going to win and get to the White House. Forget it......Democrats!

BLfromAZ   August 26th, 2008 10:49 pm ET

Let's see, open all the oil up for drilling, offer the oil co's tax credits for training and hiring inner city hopefulls, build some more refinerys, some nuclear reactors, windmills in the deserts, so on. How many jobs would that create??? How big of a boost to the economy would that create??? Could all those paid workers afford good heath care???
The U.S. in 10 to 20 years could be the biggest energy exporter in the world. Oh but wait, the greens have our hands tyed. Vote Nov 4th!!!!!!!!!!
Throw the bums out!

Robert   August 26th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Hey Matt B. Wake up! It is the Democratic Party that has put up "obstacles" to drill for oil, build nuclear plants, build refineries, mine for coal, or put wind turbines in view of the Kennedy compound (but on my family's ranch it is OK), Obama's answer is to air up our tires to justify not drilling off shore.

tony   August 26th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

I am thinking by myself and I THINK we need to drill now..drill here...If you dont want to buy the gasoline from off shore drilling then dont...go buy some alternative energy for your for your

More government is not the solution...the free market is....

Matt B   August 26th, 2008 10:40 pm ET

The TRUTH is that the oil companies has unused offshore drilling leases and could drill MORE now if they wanted.

The offshore drilling tauted by the republicans is a GIMMICK to draw votes.

C from Texas   August 26th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

"renewable energy".....I remember hearing the Dems stress this during Pres. Carter term (until the Iran screw up), how many years ago was that and where have the Dems taken us since then? False hope for people that would believe that the Dems are not getting money from the big oil companies. Who has the experience to lead this nation?

McCAin '08

Robert   August 26th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

My family has wind turbines on our ranch but I do not understand the Democratic reasoning for not drilling while trying to develop alternative energy sources. It is just plain stupid and will result in their defeat. For Pelosi to say that drilling for oil will save two cents a gallon in ten years is ignorant and will lead to Republicans winning the White House again.

ANGEL   August 26th, 2008 10:15 pm ET

Matt B   August 26th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

The democrats opposition to more offshore drilling is CORRECT and there is no reason to be on the defensive.

Bush and McCain have had EIGHT years to come up with an energy policy. EIGHT YEARS ! Now, with Americans feeling the pain at the pump, and an election year, NOW, it is a TOP priority for McCain and the republicans to do what they had EIGHT years to do and failed- to come up with a sane energy policy. And the American voter is supposed to give them FOUR more years to deliver. Absolutely LUDICROUS !

Jack Colson   August 26th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Truly it is sad – because of the procraastination from the mid 70's re energy no one truly knows what to do – that is indeed the case right now.
The greed was so bad that we are now in debt to the tune of 9.5 TRILLION Dollars and China, and the Mideast is awaiting our fall.....they truly must laugh at how dumb USA has been for 30 years....and how ignorant and selfish the politicians have been.

Kim   August 26th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Drilling is not the answer!! Stop listening to the Republican rhetoric and start thinking for yourselves. One oil spill would devastate our beautiful coasts and I for one would rather we do away with all the SUVs than to lose such a precious environment to the greed of the oil industry.

Voter   August 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Absolutely. John McCain would certainly agree that renewable energy means more American jobs.

Meanwhile, during the DECADE it will take to produce that energy, we don't all have woodburning stoves, so maybe some drilling would help fill in the blanks here.

Tom in VA   August 26th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

And I disagree, Mark Warner is really good. I am an independent, and he will get my vote for Senate.

john williams san diego, ca.   August 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Nominate Schneider for Obamas press secretary-puppet on a string

WeBoDave   August 26th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Obama said that immediately, but why would I expect you to be paying attention? Drill here...drill now also means you trust the oil companies to actually try to produce more oil and not just worry about their bottom line. Isn't that why drilling was allowed on some federal lands and how has that worked out?

Tom in VA   August 26th, 2008 9:57 pm ET

Vic, and people like you, are cutting off your noses to spite your faces. Enjoy four more years of economic misery and moves toward world war. If there is even a world left in 2012, Hillary will not be the nominee anyway. 18 million voices for Obama will not forget you.

Bill   August 26th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

I sincerely doubt if ANYONE from the GOP is going to deliver a "frothing at the mouth" speech. Some of you Democrats clearly believe that Republicans are a) stupid and/or b) the Antichrist, and it just isn't the case. We're just as smart but no smarter than you, just as patriotic but not more patriotic than you, and just as concerned about the country as you are. Go ahead and paint us in your minds as some frothing, crazed, power-hungry people, but the reality is that we're basically the same as you, but with some different ideas.

That said, I think if you're looking for self-destruction at the GOP convention, you're going to be disappointed. Lots of Dems were talking about how "Obama is going to destroy McCain" in public speaking, and I kept saying how wrong that was. McCain is a very good public speaker and you're going to see a good, even show at the debates. And the GOP convention will be every bit as compelling as the DNC convention. Anyone that expects otherwise simply isn't realistic.

JohnBoy   August 26th, 2008 9:55 pm ET

BURG VS OBAMA

Stay tuned.

Scott L   August 26th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Sure....notice how when Bush lifted federal ban on offshore drilling prices dropped dramatically? that had NOTHING to do with renewable energy people....WAKE UP DEMS!

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE AGENTS FROM HELL   August 26th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

I as a Indepent voting for Obama really hate to say this, but this one boring convention, if I hear one more speaker teking of their hard luck life growing up I am going to scream! And Warner is one of the most dryest keynote speaker, why the hect is he in this role? My husband said they should have looked at footage from the last one. I almost hope Hillary would come out there and do something crazy just to save the day, put some excitement back in it.

Michelle Obama is by far the best speaker thus far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shoot even her momma's video introduction was more exciting!

EVERYONE BUT OBAMA NEED TO SHUT UP ABOUT THEIR LIVE STORY, IT AIN'T ABOUT NOBODY ELSE BUT OBAMA, THAT'S WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE LAY PEOPLE THAT ARE THERE FOR THAT REASON. The rest almost seem to be highlighting themselves and only making mention of Obama!

Winston   August 26th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

Politicians should have to quote stitistics that can be checked! Cost of renewable energy? Number of expeceted new employment as oppossed to getting back to drilling full time? How much oil and gas is available now versus what we can actually expect in "renewable energy? Renewable energy sounds good, but.............................

America   August 26th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

We have no choice but to drill in order to get out of our current mess. However, the idea to develop renewable energy is wonderful but will take a long time to become a reality. We need to do both right now.

What?   August 26th, 2008 9:52 pm ET

I WOULD LIKE TO BE THE FIRST OBAMA SUPPORTER TO SAY TO ALL OF THE DEMOCRATS THAT WERE SUPPORTERS OF HILLARY CLINTON, THAT HAS HANDLE THIS ELECTION IN A GROWN AND MUTURE WAY AND WILL VOTE WITH YOUR FELLOW DEMOCRATS TO ELECT BARACK OBAMA AS OUR PRESIDENT. I KNOW A LOT OF COMMENTS (EVEN ONES THAT I HAVE STATED) WERE NOT RIGHT. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THINKING ABOUT EVERYONE'S FUTURE AND NOT JUST SHOW ANGER.

THE LAST EIGHT YEARS HAS BEEN H_LL.

MCCAIN CARES NOTHING ABOUT THOSE ANGRY VOTERS AS HE CLAIMS. UHM.......IF HE IS TELLING THE TRUTH WHY WASN'T THEY IMPORTANT ENOUGH WHE THE PRIMARIES WHERE GOING ON? HE MENTIONED NOTHING ABOUT PANDERING ANGRY VOTERS FOR HILLARY OR OBAMA.

Once again, lousy journalism from CNN. this is no more than an opinion-changing statement with no attempt at balanced reporting, much less relevant context.

shame on you.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   August 26th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

McCain is pandering to the same crowd that followed Bush, unaware of the fact that Bush and his crowd don't like him.

Remember South Carolina-2000, Senator McCain?!

McCain-2008 = Dole-1996 – a sacrificial lamb!!!

White, female supporter of Obama   August 26th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

You weren't listening to the people on the stage. You were too busy listening to yourselves. The people watching PBS heard from a small business owner and the gov. of Clorado make Obama's case for energy efficiency and the case against McCain.

You people really over estimate your importance and are a disgrace.Your audience is not able to get an objective comprehensive view of what is being said.

David Peter   August 26th, 2008 9:48 pm ET

It's the economy, stupid

Republican for Obama   August 26th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

Bill,

Americans are not dumb. Offshore drilling is just one insignificant, medium-term item in a long menu of energy options. America has had its experience with 'experienced' hands on fossil fuel energy in Bush-Cheney.

McCain is prescribing more of the same FOUR-DOLLAR-A-GALLON energy policies of Bush. A little more drilling here and there will not make a dent.

Its time for change, and a shift from fossil fuels to SAFE, RENEWABLE, JOB CREATING options that Obama clearly espouses.

There's plenty of drilling to be done in Texas....Start in Crawdad

john williams san diego, ca.   August 26th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

O.K. Schneider you go for renewable energy that might be available in ten years, but if you don't start drilling offshore or in Alaska now in two years it won't be $750 billion supporting the middle east, it will be $750 TRILLION in ten years-PUPPET

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY ARE AGENTS FROM HELL   August 26th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

Sounds to me McSame is only offering a snowball solution to the problem. McSame just like Bush is only interested in the personal profits he can gain from these oil dealings. I DO NOT TRUST MCSAME, NOT ONE BIT!

munin choudrey   August 26th, 2008 9:42 pm ET

We have a very unpopular President and now the Republicans is sending a handicapped person to lead. All BO has to do to talk intellegently. Instead BO is struggling to get his MO what he had in the early days of the Primaries. BO lacks vision. He is tupid not to support Nuclear power. I can understand his opposition to off shorw drilling but against Nuclear? Who are his advisor?

US is struggling to give Neclear deal to India but BO is stupid to make India look stupid. BO is going to loose. I feel sexist media stoll the election from Hillary. I will seat than to vote for the Hussin guy.

DNC need Clintons
Clintons no need DNC
Clintons are great people because of that they are sticking with the party

Hillary 2012 / Mc Cain 2008

Eric   August 26th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

I understand that the networks will only cover the convention for 1hr. However, CNN is covering the DNC for 5 hours each night and all I hear is talk about what the DNC is not talking about. Why isn't CNN showing the actual speaches made by important democratic leaders??? I searched and finanly found that C-SPAN is the only station actually showing the convention. I don't mind the commentary from CNN, and I appreciate that they are the only news network that gives airtime to our important democratic process. However, I think it is disrespectful to snub all the speakers while the DNC is going on behind the scenes of the comentators. If CNN whould like to see some "substance" from the DNC, tell them to turn around and look behind them!
-As a registered Democrat trying to find a news station who will show the actual convention. I hope CNN shows the same disrespect at the Republican convention next week.
Thanks, Eric

anonymous   August 26th, 2008 9:38 pm ET

I think the reason people are uncertain about the democrats is because of the past, they have never had a proven track record of doing anything prosperous for our country and unfortunately it is never forgotten as all Americans pay for this.

American by choice   August 26th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

"renewable energy means more American Jobs"... just that? it is not sound.

I don't like McCain but his policies are more practical and has common sense, He goes for "all of the above".

Any energy policy is an economic policy.

Sam   August 26th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

MSNBC is doing a much better job covering the convention.
CNN, watch and learn!!!!!!

Gerry   August 26th, 2008 9:32 pm ET

I think it would be wonderful if Rudy Giuliani delivers an extreme, frothing at the mouth, out of control neo-con nut job attack against Senator Obama. Let it all hang out, Rudy. Let the entire nation see for itself the nature of how far you and Senator McCain are willing to go to retain power for your elite. You Republicans are responsible for the near total train wreck that the nation is experiencing today. The best action you can take to enable all of us to clearly understand the depths of your psychosis is for it to come out of your own mouth.

BK   August 26th, 2008 9:30 pm ET

We want drill here drill now, balance the budget, and get our country back.
