DENVER (CNN) — A new national poll indicates Barack Obama has opened up a double-digit lead in New Mexico, while the battle for the Colorado is a dead heat between the presumptive Democratic nominee and Republican rival John McCain.

A CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation poll out Wednesday has the Obama up by 13 points in New Mexico, 53 to 40 percent. The state has had two close calls in the past two elections, with Vice President Al Gore slipping past George W. Bush in 2000 and President Bush edging out Massachusetts Senator John Kerry for years ago.

It’s a different story in Colorado, where the Democrats are holding their national convention this week. On the eve of Obama’s presidential acceptance speech in Denver, the poll suggests John McCain has a 47 percent to 46 percent advantage over Obama. Taking into account the survey’s sampling error, that’s a virtual dead heat. Bush won Colorado by eight points in 2000, and by five points in the last election.

"The Democrats chose Denver for their convention in the hopes of poaching Colorado from the GOP," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "It appears that hasn't happened yet, although Thursday night's main event in Denver's football stadium may help Obama make some inroads." Holland notes that the poll indicates a huge gender gap in Colorado, with 55 percent of women going for Obama and 55 percent of men picking McCain.

It’s also a close race in Nevada, another Western state Obama’s campaign would like to turn from red to blue. President Bush won the state by narrow margins in the last two elections. But the poll indicates Obama has a five point margin over McCain, 49 to 44 percent.

Obama named Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate on Saturday. Although Biden is a longtime Delaware resident, he was born and raised in Pennsylvania. Has the Biden announcement made an impact in the Keystone State? Our new poll doesn’t show any indication of that so far. Obama holds a 5-point edge in our new survey, 48 to 43 percent. That’s pretty much where recent polls from other organizations have put the race.

"Pennsylvania voters tend to be a bit older than in most states, so it's good news for Obama that he's actually carrying senior citizens in the Keystone State. Nationally, seniors tend to pick McCain," Holland said. "But the bad news for Obama is that he's only pulling a quarter of the rural voters in Pennsylvania. That's a far worse showing for Obama than rural voters in Nevada or Colorado."

The CNN/Time/Opinion Research Corporation surveys were conducted Sunday through Tuesday, with 670 registered voters in Colorado, 625 in Nevada, 659 in New Mexico and 669 in Pennsylvania questioned by telephone. The sampling error for each poll is plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Sooo funny the way they list these polls. They forgot to include that Obama has failed to get the "bump" they wanted in the polls–any less the 15 pt bump that was predicted by some.

Most of the people who send in to this don't deserve to vote. People who hate McCain and love Obama are fools. Absolute fools. But most of them probably have plenty of time to be on the computer because they are on the government dole. No, that's not Bob Dole you idiots.

McBum you're out!   August 27th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

McCain will lose by a landslide and they know it. Why do you think so many republicans senators are skipping their convention. The trunout will be extermely high for Democrats. Especially in this election year, more 18 to 29 years old will showup to cast their votes than ever before.

The Bottom Line   August 27th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

National polls are useless. We do not have a national election. Electoral delegates are awarded at the state level.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   August 27th, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Well, I'll try a simple one -
If Obama keeps Kerry's states, and then adds
Iowa - where he's already projected to win
New Mexico - where's he's got a strong position
and Colorado -where it is very tight,
he wins with 273 electoral votes.
If he doesn't get VColorado, but gets Nevada instead, he has 269 and then the House of Reps puts him in (kind of like the Supreme Court in 2000 with President Bush, except the House has explicit authority to act in the case of a tie)
And, he's still competitive in Montana, so that would give him 272 with Nevada.
Didn't say anything about Ohio or Florida, the former where he's slightly up and the latter where he's slightly trailing.
And then there's Virginia where the state will be controlled by Dems once Warner is elected.
So, as the dude told us, it's a different map this year. I think Obama will rewrite it and McCain will be history.

Come on Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio and Virginia. We need you.

Obama will make a stammering fool out of John McCain in the debates, and the show will be over.

your all a joke-my cousin lives in southern New Mexico, and the one thing i have to say is: it's a dumpster. Anyone who can seriously state that if he wins NM, somehow he is going to win the Election. What has the democrats done for us? they have driven our gas prices to historic highs (hmm, Carter drove them up last time), we cannot defend ourselves against foreign invasions, they give us crappy movies, they work at UCLA, they come out with polls that say this, and say that. i live in Rochester, NY, and i can honestly say, wat in gods name has she done for New York? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, AND SCHUMER? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. if you think Obama is the Messiah, you've got something coming to you. Liberals are hippies and tree huggers, and those that sit high on their pedistals, thinking we have NO IDEA how to run our lives. leave us the hell alone, let us keep our dang money, our guns, our SUV's, and the government can defend us, make currency, take care of our roads, etc. i think that's all they need to do.

Obama/Biden   August 27th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

No way, No How, No McCain. Obama has served and earned this nomination by compaigning against his opponent for 19 months. If you think that he stole it I am asking you where have you being during the primary season. Enough of this nonsense and if you are a true Democrat with value you cannot dare stay home or vote for McCain. After all this convention and the election the way you vote will hunt and hurt you for many years in your pockets and the future of this nation. We cannot afford having the US carying its white plate to China and beg them for money. This has never happen before in our history but under this republican government. Having McCain in for four more years we will be begging China for more money and we will face great deception from them.

Bad News for GOP   August 27th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

By 2050 whites will be the minority so unless GOP starts courting the black and Hispanic votes a GOP is in trouble.

Wow, Who cares?   August 27th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Obama has gone from a double digit lead to trailing McCain…

Wow, New Mexico still likes him, go figure. Bill Richardson is a moron, and they voted him for Gov.

I wouldn't count on "The College Kid" vote, unless the voting stations are on the way to their local head shop.

You have a relatively unknown, who's lack of experience is ultimately going to be the nail in his coffin, vs a seasoned veteran like McCain.

The two messages that i've heard since this all started.
Democrats: Let's play America's dislike of Bush by continually repeating that McCain is Bush, because they both have the (R) stamp on their names.
Republicans: Obama has virtually no experience and shouldn't even be in charge of running a Walmart let alone POTUSA.

I think i'll take the very real experience issue over the fabricated McCain=Bush issue.

Obama/Biden 08

Rick   August 27th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Hmmm, shouldn't the headline read "Obama takes double-digit lead in one battleground state, trails in another"?

Brian Beherenow   August 27th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I am starting to think that many of these polls are flawed…lets consider that Barack has particular appeal among young voters and new voters, many who are college age, many who do not vote in primaries but will likely vote in the general election….most of these polls are made up of already registered voters and people deemed "likely voters" (i.e.: those who've voted before)

Lets also consider that many of his college-age voters are just getting back to school and will likely register to vote in the states and districts where they attend college and not necessarily in their home states….let's also consider that these college age voters are mobile, they don't have their own homes and therefore don't have their own land line telephone numbers where they can be contacted…pollsters don't call cell phones!

Then lets consider those undecided voters…why haven't they decided? John McCain has been on the political scene for some time, they saw him run for president in 2000…They've had plenty of time to decide if they like John McCain or not. Barack Obama on the other hand is a relative new-comer to national politics, people are still getting to know him and getting to know what he stands for….I suspect these undecided voters would probably have already committed to McCain by now if they were going to….I suspect many of them will break for Obama as we get closer to November and they get a bit more comfortable with him.

So lets not get too excited about these polls, because I think this election is FAR different than any election we've seen before.

Well, that's great.
I don't think state-by-state polls should are completely accurate, of course. They still only do the polling based on land lines, if I'm not mistaken.

One of Obama's main constituencies, young people, may be overlooked because of this. National polls never mean anything . . . but state-by-state, I think we should expect Obama to have a few more points than he is given. Most college students don't have a land line, and many families have switched to cell phones only.

YOUR POLLS MEAN NOTHING!! Do your own polling CNN! right there on your front page in the Quick vote…One simple question two simple choices. OBAMA or McCAIN. Choose your leader.

But that wouldn't be controversial enough now would it? It seems you guys need something that will get people to pay attention to you.

CNN - take a breath. Try breathing into a paper bag. It's just not all that exciting.

All the polls will be all over the map until the Republican convention has been over AT LEAST one week, maybe two.

Both conventions will be thankfully over, both VPs will be out there. People will be getting on with their own lives. They might even tune into what the enthusiasts only are watching closely now.

THEN we can see what the polls say….so, just relax, breathe deeply and wait it out. I know Wolf et al can do it if you just try…

New Mexico goes for Obama!!! Guess it is all over now, because we all know "as New Mexico goes" so goes the Nation. CNN you are too funny…..

Spencer from VA   August 27th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

We've got New Mexico and once this convention is over with, we will have the lead in Colorado. And for all you Republicans, Virginia is ours this year. Thanks for your support Hillary!

CNN has to broadcast something positive for Obama. "Obama takes double-digit lead in one battleground state". Then the details of his troubles in Colorado are in small print. Too funny

As the Doors once noted, "The West is the best; Get here, and we'll do the rest."
