John Kerry speaks at the DNC.

DENVER (CNN) — John Kerry gave the speech Democrats wish he had given at his own convention four years ago. It was very tough: "how dare they…" suggest who is a patriot and who isn't. The surprise guest: Barack Obama's uncle, a World War II hero.

I had to switch to C-SPAN to see Kerry's entire speech, since CNN cut away. Unbelievable. It's too bad that CNN did that, because Kerry did a GREAT job. He seemed genuinely angry and fired up, which is an emotion he did not sufficiently convey in 2004. You can tell that Kerry really wants Obama to win.
Bubba's speech was definitely the best of the night, but Kerry was great, too.

jackie   August 28th, 2008 1:55 am ET

To me the DNC Convention was sad — it was full of "if only's"—- if only - Hillary Clinton had conducted her campaign the way she appeared the other night - she was bright, forceful, appealing and full of strength and common sense - she also softened her personal appearance…. if only - John Kerry had given the same speech 4 years ago - on his own behalf….I was lukewarm in my support for Sen Kerry 4 years ago (until I saw him in person ) it comes down to personal appeal - the Sen Kerry I saw in person was 180 degrees different than on tv — he ran in from center field when his helo was late — did an off the cuff talk and question and answer session — he was forceful, knowledgeable, funny and far more appealing than he comes off on camera… John Kennedy won largely on the basis that the cameras loved him in the debates……….it strikes me as fortunate that there were no cameras around for Washington, Jefferson– or especially Mr Lincoln — HE would never have gotten elected………

god bless america!!!!   August 28th, 2008 1:32 am ET

he rocked it!!!!!that was my favorite speech tonight!!!personally i liked more the clinton speech!!!!!
i loved it!
god that man is smart!!!!!

Is the best speech

typical of people that are hypocrites...   August 28th, 2008 1:17 am ET

Kerry and McCain are the same people but different side of the aisle…

both married a rich heiress… however, i didn't hear the yelling on behalf of the democrats 4 years ago on this…

Desmond Sequeira   August 28th, 2008 1:11 am ET

If it was not for a fear-mongering very nasty republican leadership that preys of the basest aspects of human nature and for very impressionable US citizens, Kerry would be going on to a second term as President this year.

Dave   August 28th, 2008 12:39 am ET

I thought this speech was better than his entire '04 campaign. I guess you give a guy four years to stew on a loss to GW, he's either going to do this or switch his life's focus and go win a Nobel prize or something.

Maybe that's a good use for Karl Rove after all! Life going nowhere? Need motivation? Come let Uncle Karl drag you through the mud, and in just four short years, you will want to take on the world!

EDWARD QUEZON   August 28th, 2008 12:04 am ET

Speeches by Hillary, Bill, and Kerry are great, hope Obama can do the same or better, then he is a nominee.

Republican for Obama   August 28th, 2008 12:01 am ET

Agreed.

I loved the ' candidate McCain opposes the immigration bill that Sen. McCain wrote'

Chuck   August 27th, 2008 11:59 pm ET

As a proud and loyal Republican, I will say that I did enjoy all the speakers. As I read all the comments, I can't for the life of me understand how the Democrats say that they are inclusive and tolerant of other views. But if you're a Republican, watch out.
Was I thrilled with President Bush four years ago? Not really, but I, as someone who was in Iraq at the Time, and am currently on my third tour, had to choose between the lesser of two evils, and chose Bush. Live and learn. Anyway, no one is calling Democrats traitors and should be shot, as a previous comment stated. But since this a predominately Democrat/Liberal comment page, I will take the scorn and vitriole that is expected to come. But the question is this," who is the best qualified,Obama or McCain?" That is the job of the candidates to convince me. If Obama can convince me, then he will get my vote, and the same goes for McCain as well. And BOTH PARTIES are guilty of voter irregularities.

Ll   August 27th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

I was so glad to hear Kerry's speech, it was great. I can't imagine anyone actually voting for McCain.

David W.   August 27th, 2008 11:57 pm ET

Kerry should retire. He's getting white hair.

EDWARD QUEZON   August 27th, 2008 11:55 pm ET

Speeches delivered by Hillary , Bil and Kerry are great, If Obama can do the same, then he is the right nominee.

fired   August 27th, 2008 11:48 pm ET

Kerry gave the perfect speech at the perfect time!!!!

EqualBranchesofGovernment   August 27th, 2008 11:43 pm ET

John Kerry just waited too long to respond to the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth ads aimed against him in 2004. It had nothing to do with his speeches or the debates.

Ravi in Missouri   August 27th, 2008 11:36 pm ET

I think John Kerry is just as awesome today as he was four years ago. And it's true, this one of his best speeches to date. I'm glad he's on our side.

VRM   August 27th, 2008 11:32 pm ET

"Looks like the Dems agree….Obama's uncle is more qualified to be president than Obama is….

Seriously, is this what they have to do for validity?"

Isn't that what McCain has been doing?

MISS B   August 27th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

I REALLY ENJOYED KERRY'S SPEECH. AND 2 INTRODUCE BARACK'S UNCLE, A FORMER WW2 VET……GOOD MOVE

Hispanic for Obama - Ricky   August 27th, 2008 11:29 pm ET

It doesnt matter if you think its 4 years too late he gave it today. He is still doing something for the party because he loves this country.

It was a great week of convention yet I see these "experts" give more negative reviews than not. I'm voting, am the average American, and I loved it. My review has more credibility than yours.

Obama/Biden for President!

Proud American   August 27th, 2008 11:27 pm ET

Better late then never. You're still great Kerry. Thanks for championing Americas cause.

AMERICA FOR OBAMA   August 27th, 2008 11:24 pm ET

Well, sometimes these speeches take a few years to perfect! ;-)

FactCheck   August 27th, 2008 11:22 pm ET

> If Senator Kerry had given speeches like this four years ago, he'd be President Kerry.

It still wouldn't have kept Bush and his Republican buddies in Ohio from carrying out those darned "voter irregularities" that won him the election.

Debby   August 27th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I thought Kerry was awful he couldn't deliver 4 years and he couldn't do it tonight either.

pj   August 27th, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Kerry, what a great speech!
Wow, just wow!

denisovich   August 27th, 2008 11:10 pm ET

Kerry gave the best speech so far. Started slow, but right on point at the end. and he hit home for me with the "how dare they" rant. The dems have been so weak with the republicans these past 8 years, it is difficult to trust them. However, if democrats stand up Finally, like Kerry Finally stood up tonight, Democrats have a chance of actually getting something done this election, and in the next 4 years.

Greg FL.   August 27th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

I agree Terence. It's time to examine McCains military record. He is basing his experience on his military record, so I think it's fair game. I want to know why after Pensacola. He was sent to a dead end job for the Navy? What did they know that we don't?

Jacqueline Lucero   August 27th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

I thought it was just me, but I know now that I am not alone CNN is very unfair to Democrats and that is not true journallism

ML - California   August 27th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

Good job by Kerry. Where was he four years ago? If he was sincere, let's hope his frustrations have mellowed.

D&D   August 27th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

I loved the comparison between "Sen. McCain and Candidate McCain"…you were great John Kerry, thank you.

Enough!!!   August 27th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

His speech is right on and right on time. Maybe he should have your jobs at CNN since he is willing to acknowledge the fact that the Bush Admin is doing everything that Obama has already suggested, such as the timetable, diplomacy w/Iran, xfer of troops to Afghaninstan. You guys are too busy repeating McCain's lies about his experience and judgement to lead. Maybe youall are about as racist as McCain is.. Now can youall please begin to highlight that. THE BUSH ADMIN IS DOING EVERYTHING OBAMA SUGGESTED. OBAMA IS ALREADY LEADING.

HAHAHAHAHAHA… oh man… people like this make me so excited for the wave of change that's about to knock them over…

stratl   August 27th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

People always call obama black, but i wish theyd identify him correctly, he is HALF WHITE!!! Thus mixed, and was raised by his white family, as evidenced by his uncle, america is majority white and he should embrace that side of his family more!

Jason   August 27th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

The thing that always bothered me about Kerry was that he was spineless… but a wet mop would have been better than Bush, so I voted for Kerry.

I think candidates are always under the microscope, and they're too afraid to outright bash their opponents. In reality, I'd be more willing to vote for someone I thought was real. If Kerry had given this speech 4 years ago when the Swift-boaters were destroying him, I'd have been much more enthusiastic about giving him my vote.

Franky   August 27th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Man John, I don't know why Dems believed they had a chance in 04. Who knows, maybe you did but overall, I didn't think personally you could take my boy(Bush).

KERRY JUST SIMPLY BRILLIANT.

I served in the U.S. Air Force during Viet Nam from 71-83. I Didn't go through half as much as Sen. McCain. I have PTSD. Has anyone questioned Sen McCain's PTSD.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   August 27th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

John McCain aka Karl Rove uses fear tactics on the American people and then send them to war, this doesn't make sense. As much as McCain talks about patroitism you would think he would talk patroitism when speaking to Americans. McCain's tactics just aren't fit to support him as Commander in Chief.

And we're changing the guard EIGHT YEARS TOO LATE.

The ignoramuses that put W in twice should be shot for treason.

At least we'll get it right this time.

65 with 2 grandchildren old enough to vote and all three of us are for OBAMA/BIDEN '08

Marc PDX   August 27th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

Too late, yeah… he gave a good speech, after he gave a bad one….

Or something like that…

Joshua   August 27th, 2008 10:07 pm ET

That was absolutely perfect. If THAT John Kerry had talked four years ago, we'd be on the way to reelecting him for president. I'm deeply grateful that he delivered the message that he delivered tonight. Well done John Kerry. Let's hope the rest of America joins him in refusing to accept the dirty politics of Corsi and Rove. Let's hope even McCain's supporters start demanding the campaign he promised months ago, one based on issues, not attacks and outright lies.

Kevin,FL   August 27th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

Barack Obama will be in this same exact position 4 years from now,

AP   August 27th, 2008 10:06 pm ET

John Kerry!!! Oh my god! So great!!

Debbie - Arkansas   August 27th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Bill's 'old theme' might have played on his entrance…but he ROCKED IT for BA-ROCK! His message came across…I (am a Hillary/Bill fan)
am also touched by the fact that Obama's acceptance speech will be given on the 45th Anniversary of Dr. King's "I have a Dream" speech. Would he not be proud of this man, this moment, this time in OUR AMERICAN HISTORY!

Voter   August 27th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

Wonderful that Kerry gives a speech four years too late. I would be sad if I thought he would ever be elected.

He's so unappealing at so very many levels.

And he really screwed up, didn't he, Democrats?

What amazes me is your uncanny ability to repeat history, in spite of the Clintons, who are clearly the best thing that's happened to your party since LBJ.

Obama?? Good luck.

Jay   August 27th, 2008 10:02 pm ET

Excellent speech by Sen. Kerry.

mel from Ohio   August 27th, 2008 9:59 pm ET

Kerry's speech 4 years ago had nothing to do with his loss. Let me refresh your memory. The "Bush" dirt slingers and sewage eaters put an ad together that was untrue and full of lies. The American people were dumb enough to believe it—thus the idiots that we have had in office prevailed and flushed us down the toilet in their quest for money and oil. Hopefully, the American people will be more sophisticated this time and not buy into the dirt that the Republicans are once again slinging.

Cynthia   August 27th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Experience is the best teacher. It was also great to see Senator Obama's uncle.

Ian MacIsaac   August 27th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

If Senator Kerry had given speeches like this four years ago, he'd be President Kerry. Just like Vice President Gore. They always get interesting AFTER they lose.

citizen   August 27th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

well he is doing it now. You live and you learn. We will win despite the horrific coverage of the dem convention from cnn. it is like your network is dedicated to electing a republican. you provide the republican surrogates more air time than the speeches from the dem convention. you are trying to swing the election by not properly covering the news. disgraceful.

sarah, missoula MT   August 27th, 2008 9:56 pm ET

Kerry's speech was amazing. I wish more people would hit McCain as hard as he did, and with so many solid facts and strong points.

Obama 08!

Dandelion.   August 27th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

Both John Kerry and Bill Clinton delivered perfect speeches. They both felt very sincere and I cannot wait until we elect Barack Obama.

The part with his uncle brought me to tears. Truly. I have been bawling off and on since Monday!
