Watch Spike Lee talk politics at the CNN Grill.

Spike Lee has never been shy about expressing his views on politics, and CNN.com Live's Melissa Long talks to the film director about the Democratic National Convention and Barack Obama's candidacy.

Interesting...   August 27th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

It's been nice to see Spike at the Convention. Question, where's he been for previous Conventions? All of a sudden we have a viable black candidate and poof, he appears. Certainly not an issue of color, is it? I would really hope not. Spike, go away. There's a hurricane headed to the Gulf. Wanna film it before making landfall this time?

Texas Straight Talker   August 27th, 2008 6:10 pm ET

So glad to see that voters are realizing that the MEDIA is creating all of this disruption in the democratic party. Watch next week when the Republicans have their convention. I guarantee you the stories and coverage will be just the opposite of the madness we are hearing and reading here!

tony   August 27th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

its all slanted to make people believe what they want you to believe. like take the artic ice cover....it's thicker this year then last year, but do they report it that way ? no since last year was the thinnest on record (they've only been watching it for 30 years which in globel time is nothing) and they don't want us to think the problem is getting better they say "ice sheet 2nd thinnest ever!"factual ly accurate but deliberately deceptive. the point being that it's the way all sides deal with everything , spin, slant, deceive!

Elizabeth Dejesus   August 27th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

HELLO????? McCain voters do you listen to this man when he talks? Now, do you understand anything that comes out of his mouth? If Barack Obama was white, he would of won already....but do to ignorant people ,he is questionable?!!! I would rather take a chance with Barack, than take a chance with this idiot. Stop looking at the color and start looking at what direction our life is going. I for one, do not want 4 more yrs added to the last 8. I refuse to leave our soldiers out there fighting and dying.....all because peoples pride. My husband lost friends, killed in front of him by explosive devices....is that what we want for our people? We live in 1 United States and if McCain don't care about ending this war, why does anyone continue supporting him? I am a Proud Army Wife. Hooah!!!

M.D. McNIff   August 27th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Who care what Spike Lee thinks about politics? He makes movies (i.e. make-believe) for a living.

Patriot   August 27th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

That's right Vote McCain for Woman's Rights and:
Continue getting unequal pay for doing the same job as men!
Save the Child Girl or Boy so he can send them to war when they are an 18 year old Girl or Boy to die in misguided Wars that don't protect our future only make it more Chaotic and dangerous! Yeah, Vote for McCain Women if you loved the 50's and 60's and want no future for your Children, or health care or real understanding for single Moms/Dads..GOOOO McCain!!!!!

The republicans didn't want McCain 8 years ago, 4 years ago, and We don't want him NOW!

It looks like the Obama scare tactic of the "Four More Years of Bush" is a bigger part of his campaign than the issues.

More people voted for Obama, plain and simple.

Obama has more elected experience than Hillary, plain and simple.

Hillary does Not have 35 years of experience, that's been proven.

Hillary lost, get over yourselves.

Why?   August 27th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Why is it alright for the x canidate to call for sister hood and women rights, but no one can mention the A.A. word, after all these years voting democrat ; by some of the comments on these blogs, etc., I realize the Democratic Party have been using us just to get our democratic votes, just to get the candidate in;
I realize it is not all repulicans that wear the sheets but yes some Democrats as well. If you are going to vote for Mccain, by all means vote for him, or write Hillary's name in, but please stop with the Obama has no resume, empty suit, Yak Yak Yak, I don't think either one of them has the experience to be President; but who does, except those who have already been President. God bless America – geesh.

Patriot Patrick of Houston   August 27th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

I applaud Spike's challenge to CNN to be unbiased in their reporting of the RNC convention. However after watching CNN religiously for the last year I have gotten to know what they stand for. And being unbiased and fair is NOT it. They bend over backwards to put as negative a spin as possible on any positive Obama story. They omit many damaging pictures and articles about McCain. I have to contiinue to watch now because I'm hooked. But I VOW TO NEVER WATCH CNN AGAIN AFTER THIS ELECTION. I always heard that cable news was biased and controlled by unseen powers, now I am absolutely convinced of it.

Ralph   August 27th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

He equates Obama to the point of BC and AD..He thinks that politics will be changed forever? Before Obama and after Obama as if he were, God like?

KB   August 27th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

In the work force your resume should only go back ten years not fifty. I'm a veteran of the Army. I served in the first Gulf war twice. Servede in Panama. I don't consider myself a war-hero. I'm not knocking the guys time served. The Commander in Chief appoints personnel to do certain jobs. Delegation is a keep attribute you must have. How much time did GW serve in the armed forces? What experience did he have prior to taking office? Being a Senator in Washington right where the rubber meets the road is what I call being on the job. AMERICA come together.

THE PAY IS GOOD HER, NEVER BEEN BETTER.
THANKS TO THE ALL NEW HOLLYWOOD.

Mike from St. Louis   August 27th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

It's funny how we have to come to a section on Spike Lee to post a comment about the election. No one really cares about what Spike thinks...
Anyways...down to business.

It is so terribly sad that people will vote for McCain and this old guy has not once stated what his plans are besides keeping the Bush tax cuts in effect, which have not worked at all, and drilling for more oil, which has failed to gain any ground in the last eight years. Oh and he did say how he would keep the troops in Irag as long as needed even though the Iragis and everyone else wants us out. Continue to spend all our US dollars in Irag while they continue to build their surplus.

Then everyone wonders where this McSame name comes from. Everything he wants is what Bush has already set forth and we are ALL suffering because of it. Where is the change you ask?? Change will come from ANYONE other than McCain. How can anyone justify voting for McCain? They all say well...Obama has no experience. if that's the case then it only means that he's not experienced at destroying something. The die hard republicans will set the ship on fire while poking holes in all the life boats to see everyone go down because they didn't like the captain. How stupid and selfish to destroy everything around them for big money sake and not being willing to see a hint of possible change. How selfish.

RCH, St. Paul, MN   August 27th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

Spike Lee needs to go away. He's irrelevant and his movies aren't even B-grade fare. Who cares about this never-was?

Obama/Biden '08!

D   August 27th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

I can tell you one thing. If Barack looses that election in November, it is only beacuse of the Clinton's. They dragged out the primaries just for spite and to divide the party to claim that Barack isn't electable. Barack ran a more effective campaign. Hilary knew that if she stayed in the race, the southern folks would have been more likely to vote for her. That is the only reason why she got 18 million votes which most came later in the primaries. Americans like to sweep things under the cover and think they can slove the world's problems. How do you think you can go in another man's country and tell him that he has to behave and accept all groups within his country when you yourself do not do the same. We all know that millions would not vote for Barack because his black. Hilary knows it. That is the real meaning behind saying that he isn't electable.

Last Honest man   August 27th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Jon   August 27th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Spike is absolutely correct re the arts. European high schooleducation begins with 2 years of the Humanities including language, history and art. They feel that to be a proper responsible citizen, that humanity come before the sciences.
Georgia History Lesson: Borders decided by Hitler-Stalin 1n 1939; Bush I. affirmed borders in 1990; Also said was Russia's sphere of influence. Condi Rice and NATO told Georgia in April 08 that they were not Democratic & had not done much peacefully w festering S. Ossetian conflict. McCain is another ignorant shoot first war monger.

I am a great CNN fan, yet dissapointed in CNN convention coverage. Wolf kept talking when important speeches were being made. Thank God for PBS so i could tape for my college student.

MD in GA   August 27th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Spike Lee, like many of us, are overwhelmed and proud. No one has to understand or even agree with those feelings. They just are what they are.

I'm 52 and I just never thought this was a possibility in my lifetime. Way too much hatred in this country towards people who didn't do anything to the haters to ever expect we might actually elect an African American as President.

Most of us can't put these feelings into words and it was clear Spike Lee was experiencing that in this interview.

I wish my mom was hear to see this. I'd love to look into her eyes and see her smiling, laughing and crying about this. My girls and grandchildren have certainly been watching me and I am watching them.

"Yes We Can."

Diane Dagenais Turbide   August 27th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Hi Spike,

anyone saying that making history is a joke like Debby is writing should looked at themselves and should be reminded that Bush/Cheney/McCain has made history indeed! And look at the results we can live without this historical eight years of mistakes!

Democratic party is the only party that has been fiscally responsible toward public funds! Democratic party is the party that have given us our values and our dmeocratic institutions by not being afraid of change!

McCain is not ready to lead...he has always been a follower and he has lead us to all to those disatrous times! Times up! give up the wheel you cannot pilot your way out of these past eight years!

Art courses are what's needed to get young people back on track! Republicans can not invest in young people for them to get back on track...They want them to miss the train! It would mean investing in people...that can actually think for themselves and act responsibly in their lives and in the lives of others! Republicans must have their own dictionary...and the word celebrity is not included!

Texas Witch Twister   August 27th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

This is the best one yet. SPIKE LEE WANTING TO BE A POLITICIAN. Gimme a break.

Amanda   August 27th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

I would also love to see some of the pictures Spike Lee has taken at the convention to see his perspective. In this interview, he expressed just how I feel about Hilary's speech. I too have had my differences with the Clintons and the way they have conducted themselves during this campaign. But I find myself repeating many of the lines from her Convention speech. It was moving, and she squashed any more talk of a divided party.

Chi4Obama   August 27th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

John McCain's 5 favorite lines:

5) "My Friends."
4) "The Surge"
3) ..."WAR"..
2) "Barack Obama" (Followed by anything Negative).
1) "I don't know. But I was a POW for 5 yrs".

juana   August 27th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Yeah, and what Dems do is always right! I will vote for McCain because there is " substance there" whereas in the Obama-Biden ticket " there is no there there". The perfect pair of politicos for the Democrats, you really will deserve what you get!

Beverly Duddleston   August 27th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

It would be interesting to see John McCain choose Condoleeza Rice for his running mate.

Bob   August 27th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

It is soo sad to see the Clintons take this convention like their property. I am proud of Obama since he never let loose and go really negative or nasty on Hillary.
What a shame clintons!

Bruce   August 27th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

John McCain is always using his POW time to defend and fight off any attemp to attack him. If John wants to talk about his POW time maybe someone should ask him "just what did happen while he was a POW? There maybe somelong lasting mental problems that he is hiding that could call his ability to LEAD into question.

Bet this will not be posted

Cheryl   August 27th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Listening to the commentaries regarding the DNC, it occurs to me that no comments made during the primaries can be taken to heart. As now, those same comments used to entice our votes are now being scoffed at as purely rhetoric for the sake of running for Commander in Chief. One is left to believe there are no truths echoed in Washington, only RHETORIC....and this is called CHANGE by the Democrats.....This only reaffirms my party change to Repulican!

There is no blog for the ticker "Ready to bury the hatchet?". So I will comment here.

We will have to see what Bill will do with his hatchet. I am sharping mine right now. I'm sure the roll call will be tame. Obama has strong armed the convention. But the sharpest cut will come at the polls in November. Obama will not get my vote.

David   August 27th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Will CNN actually air the speeches from Senators Bayh, Kerry, and Reed, and Governor Bill Richardson? We don't want to listen to rambling talking heads, we want to hear the speeches. Unfiltered.

P   August 27th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Democrats are the dumbest bunch of people. After 8 years of the GOP and the way they have treated us… Ya'll dumb people still want to vote in another Bush….

No wonder McCain uses the Democrats in his ad because we don't think…. Just plain dumb…

And I bet CNN will not post this… Fox will because they know I am telling the truth.

And no wonder they gave our symbol the Donkey….

Debby   August 27th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Yeah Spike it may be history in the making but will your candidate be able to cut for the American people as President. I find this history in the making a joke because if Obama does become President and tanks worse than Bush, this will probably be the last black person every to be considered for this important role. Obama has a heavy burden on his shoulders coming up if he is our President.

NotFallingInLine.org   August 27th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

How interesting the turns of events were on the 21th of August and none of the major news outlets noted it.
John McCain has touted his foreign Policy experience and awareness from the beginning of his campaigning while at the same time tried to categorize Senator Obama as inexperienced and lacked judgment.
John McCain has also touted Senator Obama as an elitist.
John McCain self-admittedly stated he knew very little about the economy.
John McCain called Senator Obama inexperienced because of Obama’s reaction to the Georgian crisis.
John McCain has stated that he is a maverick and fights against Washington insiders.
Well on 21 August 2008 John McCain failed on all of his points.
John McCain has been calling Senator Obama irresponsible about Obama’s willingness to set a timetable for US troop removal in Iraq. On 21 August 2008 the Bush administration along with the Iraqi government has signed the first phased timetable agreement for US troop removal of Iraq. John McCain is now 100% wrong in his position to continue fighting a war that both America and Iraq wants to end.
Also on 21 August 2008, the US military has issued a notification that there will be 11,000 more troops sent to Afghanistan. This is the follow-up to Senator Obama’s push for troop increase in Afghanistan that he has been making for months. This also follows John McCain’s error in judgment that Afghanistan did not need any help. A supplemental note to that is John McCain stated Senator Obama was wrong for wanting to curtail troops from Iraq to Afghanistan because the US had plenty of available force to deploy to Afghanistan. However, the top military official Admiral Mullen stated that the military had no spare troops to deploy anywhere. Once again John McCain is wrong.
John McCain has been trying to label Senator Obama as an elitist. Senator Obama has one home (which he purchased at a sweet deal that some find questionable – 1.5 million estimated current value). John McCain has at least seven homes of which he did not know about (estimated total current value of 13 million dollars). John McCain jokingly said (so he wants us to believe) that in America you are rich when you make at least 5 million dollars. Senator Obama said 250,000 dollars per income is a good start, the national average income hovers around 31,000 per year. So now who is the elitist?
During the start of the Russian-Georgian conflict, John McCain came out publicly with a detailed counter attack strategy for the Russian aggression in Georgia. Senator Obama stated his position and left it there. John McCain accused Senator Obama of being out of touch in America’s foreign policies because he did not attack Russia. Well John McCain forgot he was not the President of the US when he made his bullish statements, then the Georgian President called him out but John McCain did nothing. Whose judgment was best, Obama who allowed the President of the US to do the President’s job, or John McCain who made promises he could not support?
John McCain on the economy – John McCain touts that he has fought big oil his entire career. It seems that every other day he is posing and campaigning in an oil field, on an oil rig, or an oil platform. John McCain talks about drilling now, even after admitting that the best scenario is improved psychological confidence (and 200,000 barrels per day added to the global pool in five to ten years). Even if we increase the supply by 5 million barrels per day, oil will still be sold at market price.
John McCain still fails to rid his campaign of the lobbyists he claims to have fought for the last 26 years as a public servant (a very loose use of this description). The once favorable label of maverick has long left John McCain. The only thing maverick about him is that he has more Bush cronies in his camp than Bush originally had.
After all these failures of John McCain, one has to ask himself what can John McCain for America. Anyone seriously considering voting for John McCain needs to ask himself why. Is it because Senator Obama is that bad or is John McCain that safe?

sandra-california   August 27th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

I was surprised when I saw him at the DNC. Interesting stuff, no doubt.

Obama/Biden   August 27th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

John McCaim is dangerous for the country because four more years of Bush liking will bring more threat to our country. Obama/Biden ticket is very strong on national security and Biden as well as Obama is well respected around the world. Obama has better judgment on every single issues that we need on a president than mccain. That is why we must vote Democratic this November to prevent a second 9/11 and have someone who is ready for what ever decission to defend our national security in case of any plot.
Do not listen to the republican scare tactics and believe anything they have to say. The republican is the party we as voters should stay away from this November. They have done enough to our country and the economy and we cannot afford for more years of economic disasters and begging China to lend us money.
