Hillary Clinton casts her support for Barack Obama Wednesday.

DENVER (CNN) — Democrats Wednesday officially nominated Barack Obama to be their candidate for president, making him the first African-American to lead a major party ticket.

Hillary Clinton asked to cut the roll call short saying, "With eyes firmly fixed on the future, and in the spirit of unity with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, let's declare together
with one voice right here, right now that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president."

"Is there a second?" House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California asked the crowd of more than 4,400 delegates, prompting a roar of approval.

"The motion is adopted," Pelosi said with a broad smile, officially capping a long and hard-fought battle between Obama and Clinton.

Delegates then affirmed Obama as their choice with cheers. There were hugs and handshakes as "Love Train" blasted from the arena speakers.

Clinton and Obama were on the ballot at the party convention on Wednesday. The states announced their votes in alphabetical order.

I tuned in today to think that Hillary and Obama supporters would be fighting in the convention center from the way CNN reported on the divide between Democrats.

It turns out CNN was fomenting division where there was none in order to improve their ratings.

CNN you should be apologizing to the American people.

I will be tuning into Fox News tonight because at least they voice their Republican support openly instead of trying to divide the Democratic party through promoting in-fighting when the vast majority of us are intent on moving on and coalescing behind Barack Obama.

catmom   August 27th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

CNN PLEASE POST !!!

Can someone please tell me why it seems that Obama fans, the media and Obama camp feel that Hillary and Bill Clinton have to shore up the Democratic party for Obama? They then turn around and scrutinize every move they make only to criticize them over and over. Shouldn't it be Obama's job to unite the party? Isn't it Obama and Biden's job to win this election?
Hillary Clinton has done her part and did it quite well. Ever since it was announced that Bill Clinton would speak we have heard from the talking heads how upset he was with Obama and his camp. I know after his speech the pundits will be all over the place telling us how Bill Clinton's body language shows he was not sincere and how angry he is. Get over it . Obama is the nominee and HE is the who has to get the votes.

Hillary's mother must be pinching herself with the realization her daughter also made history. Hillary redeemed herself and has actually catapulted herself as a leader in the Democrat Party. I know she has experienced the ultimate in loss and hopefully is compartmentalizing her feelings about losing the nomination. Anyone who gave as much as she gave in her run would be crushed as losing. But she has shown true leadership in her actions at the convention. She made the motion to nominate and that put the icing on the cake. Congratulations Hillary.

I am an African American woman who LOVES my country and now love it even more. I thank God my Lord and savior for this day, and I thank those Americans who have come around to accepting others regardless of their skin. You have truly demonstrated that you are above and beyond racism and that we can live together in this country in unity. It's all about unity. My 82 year old uncle who served in WWII and who loves this country said this is the best day of his life. He is so happy to see this day. This is a historical day and I can't thank God above enough for his blessings. We are Americans first – we must learn to represent what we stand for and that is a country of freedom, faith, and love for all.

PUMAs I feel your frustrations and I honor you for your deep support for "woman" and HRC. But now is the time to move forward and win this election. PUMAs let's unite tonight.

Carol Michigan   August 27th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Not really sure the point in all this as Obama was already the nominee but if it makes Hillary's people feel good and this helps unit the party, then all is good.

Those who will be a turn-coat and vote Republican was never a true Democrat at all and not even a good supporter of Hillary if they can not follow her lead.

Mack   August 27th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

As a huge Hillary supporter I would like all people to stop the name calling for just a few minutes and think about the history that was made today. Regardless of how you feel, you just lived during a historic moment in this country. It may not be the history you like, but that part of this countries problem..only ackowledging the history it wants to see. Hillary made history and showed true grace under fire. She will not be forgotten, for it was she that sent the message. So enjoy Hillary's moment in history and enjoy the fact that this country has the courage to finally nominate a black man for the most powerful job in the world. Hillary and Barack together have made history today..so atleast respect both.

Yolanda   August 27th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

To ANY DEM who is still hurting that Hillary is not the nominee for the dem party:

If you have listened closely to speaker after speaker, including Hillary, at the DNC, then you MUST have heard these words:

"IF YOU VOTE FOR MCCAIN, YOU"LL ONLY GET MORE OF THE SAME."

More of the same policies that have been hurting us, our economy, our future, our children, and our children's future.

You have every right to vote the way you choose come election time, but vote for the right reason, not because of race, religion, or that your nominee lost.

Hillary is behind Obama. She does not want a Republican in the white house. She does not want "MORE OF THE SAME".

Can this country afford 4 more years of the same?

monica   August 27th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I come out here to read these and I am always amazed on how some who supported Hillary are so quick to jump ship now that she has no chance at the nomination and vote Mcbush. If you watched the convention last night, particularly HILLARY's speech, she asked were you in this just for me, because all of the things I stood for are the same things that Obama stood for and the reason that you should vote for him.
I would have to wonder if you really think that your behavior would make Hillary proud to be a democrat….even she supports Obama, even if it is grudgingly so she supports him because she realizes that he is better than Mcbush for the leader of this country…I will not beg you to reconsider your decision because quite frankly if you are old enough to vote then you are an adult, but you really need to do you research before you cast your vote, it would be a shame if the wrong man got elected because someone had a problem with the color of the qualified man's skin….

Peter of Oregon   August 27th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I'm confused CNN… why the paragraphs at the end citing polls from Saturday and Sunday? You even repeated one of the paragraphs twice, for emphasis? Maybe because your polls appeared to favor McCain? CNN I will now start to tune in to Fox News since it seems like they lead and you follow in biased reporting of the news with a Republican favored slant.

Kathy   August 27th, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Nancy Pelosi is adorable, but vicious. She played
"dirty politics" by orchestrating with Dean, Brazile and other party leaders to make sure Senator Hillary Clinton did not get nominated.

I don't think she could stand the idea of Hillary Clinton being above her in command. But she wasn't alone, neither could the "MALE" macho pigs that think they are superior to women.

Fall- in- line to an inexperienced egotistical guy who is only interested in himself and "blackpower". I don't think so. What do we have now Affirmative Action for the Presidency? He played the race card well.

Lynne, Maryland   August 27th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

Someone made the comment that McCain was born in Panama and was not a US citizen by their thoughts. Uhm, news flash. McCain was born of an American Serviceman in Panama. That is a US Serviceman serving to protect your rights and to protect this country. Any child born outside te United States of an American Serviceman is automatically considered a US citizen born abroad of American parents.

As for the rest of the election. It is going to be ugly. Personally, I am happy Clinton is not the nominee. I didn't care for her and her attitude while she was first lady, I didn't like her attitude as a senator when she was listening to speeches by President Bush and personally, I think she would rather see Barack Obama drop off the face of the earth than to actually and truly, support him in this campaign.

Given the feelings between the dems and republican voters at this point and the division of the country, it wouldn't surprise me if there are a number of security problems before and through November.

Even in victory the Obamans are full of venom. McCain is thrilled that you've chosen to give him the WH. Many of you will suffer greatly under his administration. I hope you don't blame everyone else but yourselves when Obama loses. Every Democrat in the country still doesn't make a victory. It will be Obama's lack of broad support that dooms him. McCain will benefit from being a default candidate. Too bad the Democratic party wasn't smart enough to nominate a winner. I guess it's three terms of Republican rule to get two good terms of Clinton all over again. Time to revise your long term finances. 2012 – 2020 will be rockin'.

Candy Crowley, an excellent journalist, nevertheless loves to use the word "fulsome" in describing the nature of Bill Clinton's upcoming priaise of Barack Obama in his speech tonight. The word "fulsome", while it used to mean "generous", is now most used to mean "generally offensive" and "overdone" and "overly effusive".

It would be good if someone gave her a gentle nudge to find an adjective less fulsome than the one she is presently using about Clinton's apprach toward Obama tonight. [Or doe she know what she is talking about ?!]

I refer Ms Crowley to the following descriptions:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fulsome

This first born's democratic nomination has taken a kick really out of us all [Democrats] to the chargrin of the neo-cons. But in the end we buried the hatchet, just when the Republicans thought family blood will spill.

Surprise! Surprise!! Republicans….we got news for you: Its gonna be a first black man in 2008. In 2012 or 2016 its defintely gonna be the first Woman American President!! This is the Change we Believe, and Yes we Can!…say bye-bye to the GOOD 'OLE BOYS days.

See you in the election booth later fellow Americans, my great grand parent's bones in the Grave will wake and vote come November 08- for CHANGE.

Why did Candy Crowley have to say "half blalck/half white"? Senator Obama is African-American, he chooses to be so, the country believes him to be so. Don't get any more opinions from Crowley, she is such a foot in mouth candidate.

Now it is time for Obama to do his part. As one pundit said last night, "Hillary has set the table. It is time for Obama to serve the meal." He has to stop expecting Hillary to do it for him. The Clintons deserve every moment of the spotlight they have received at this convention. They are the shining stars of the Democrat party whether Obama fans want to hear it or not. Obama's time is coming. Please all put race issues on both sides behind us and elect a Democratic President in November of 2008.

Worried Dem   August 27th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

If Obama loses this election, his dumbest move would be not picking Hillary for VP. Joe Biden's okay, but does not have the following that Hillary has. Also, if Obama is playing to win, it was supposed to be a no brainer to pick Hillary for VP in order to get her supporters on board.
Instead, he is showing his pride (in a bad way), and gives a lot of people the impression that he can't handle sharing the spotlight with somebody who is as popular as he is, thus the decision to pick Biden for VP instead.

watch out for GOP bloggers...   August 27th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

The GOP have professional bloggers to do these things. And they are alive and well in the CNN blogisphere. It is obvious. They will play at racism, and every other ism and ist to divide and concur don't fall for it. Don't fall for it.

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 27th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

NORA, FLORIDA   August 27th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

so much for the body language analysis CNN. CNN please leave Hillary, Obama, and the DEMS alone. We are doing our part. Why don't you all focus on McCain and his slip ups? Like how many houses do he actually have? How he publicaly admitted to the economy not being his strong point. Show him and Ditsy for who they really are!!!!

JS   August 27th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

After Hillary's speech last night the Obama supporters must know in their hearts that they chose the wrong candidate and McCain will probably win in the general election. You have made a huge mistake.

I for one have left the Democratic party and become an Independent. Unless Obama shows that he really is ready for the Presidency with his very limited experience and huge ego I will not be voting for either candidates. They both suck.

Matt   August 27th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

1 thing I'd like to add; How come all these people who say they can't vote for Obama, have no valuable reason why? They can't state real facts, I know the real reason why, but no one wants to say it. Let's face it, racism is alive and well, and its up to us to overcome it. I won't let racism be the reason why my country goes even more backwards. No way, no how, no fake PUMA's who are just Repubs in disguise. Remember they donated to Mccain's campaign twice!

26th Letter   August 27th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Why do people keep referring to the significance of this moment by comparing it to the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement? Black people are crying tears of joy right now because this has been a bloody road we've traveled for over 400 years. It didnt begin in the 50s and 60s it began when the first slave ship arrived on this land carrying our people as its precious cargo. This moment is precious to us because it demonstrates that Hope and Faith was and is never in vain. I am proud to be an American in this moment but I am even more proud to be a Black American who has be given the opportunity to bare witness to a moment I struggled to believe could be possible.

Let's exchange Hate for Love and replace Fear with Hope!

Interesting: this must be the first convention you've ever followed. I've never known the nominees in the last few years come to the convention before the 3rd night.

R   August 27th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Let's all be frank here; The people who say they will never vote for Obama, are really just people who can't fathom the fact that it is possible for someone other than a white MAN to run our country. Plain and simple. Half of these comments are by republican plants trying to divide the party. Hillary lost, ran a bad campaign. Let's also consider how many voters did Hillary lose after they voted for her? Quite a few changed their mind when they saw how desperate her tactics were. So if there's a few hundred, maybe few thousand that don't fall in line, well they were never for the party themselves. They act like Obama's the messiah, Hillary is the one who can make these people so brainwashed that they'll go against their own moral values to prove a point? Scuse' me, but my country isn't something you can just vote around and let go for something petty like losing! I won't let that happen, and neither should us REAL DEMOCRATS. Don't forget 18 million voters, which more than 70% already fell in like, that's 12.6 million who have a clue who to vote for! All this hype is made up by the media to keep the news "infotainment" don't believe the hype!

John   August 27th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

The anti-Obama democrats just justify why so many people feel that democrats are a big joke. Grow up babies.

Tom in VA   August 27th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Wait a minute, Hillary '12 supporters…if Barack is not ready to lead yet, do you not think he'd be ready in '12? How many years constitutes "ready"? You act like it'd be a done deal for her then – you forget about Barack, you forget about Mark Warner, and you forget about 18 million people who did NOT vote for her in this primary. I applaud and welcome the Hillary supporters who have come on board, but I think the rest of you are a bunch of idiots.

If you have any lack of clarity on this, you should have seen the young lady on Larry King last night from "Just Say No Deal". I am not sure I have ever seen a bigger moron on television, with absolutely no idea what she was talking about. At the end of the questioning, what it seemed to come down to is she just wanted a hug from Obama supporters. What a loser.

As an African American man, one who served this country honorably in the military, todays nomination of Barack Obama gave me a since of pride in our democratic processes like never before, today I truly feel that AMERICA is finally ready to turn the page on the injustices that were suffered by the African American people that we can find even in our differences a commonality that is greater than ourselves and greater than this nations past, we now move on to a greater change and prosperity for all americans and not just those who forget how many houses they have.

Proud to be an AMERICAN regardless of the tone of my skin.

Matt   August 27th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

If you missed it on TV, it was a cheerful, uniting, and symbolic gesture. Go Hillary I'm very proud of you! Go Obama, you hold the power to truly improve America!
Please don't buy into the media noise that it was 'carefully staged', that Hillary's 'body language' was off, that it was forced, blah blah blah. The talking heads are needlessly fueling a fire for ratings, and it is to the detriment of REAL issues this country faces. Unite for the bigger cause, our country. Let's ignore these silly distractions.

I feel sorry for the Hillary supporters who were at the Republican Happy Hour. They should feel ashamed by now. They weren't Hillary supporters to begin with it looks like.

Despite all the bickering, posturing and acrimony, I hope we can all appreciate this historic moment in our country's history. This country has a had a moral gap and it's been closing it. There is a way to go, but we must pause to celebrate milestones along the way.

Congratulations America for nearly nominating the first woman and for nominating the first African American.

Let's keep moving forward.

It's ridiculous to me that so called hillary supporters would vote mccain instead of hillary… obama & clinton are practically the same on policy, whereas mccain is the polar opposite!!!!! i understand bitterness, but that shouldn't lead you to make such a bad decision!!!!!! at that point let's be real, it's not even about hrc anymore it's about you & everything you projected onto her… losses are tough but can we please be adults about this… she get's another shot, hopefully in 8 yrs but worse case scenario in 4….

Thanks be to God! As I drove home I was listening to NPR Radio, and heard a horrific story of our troops attacking a village in Afghanistan where they thought or believed that was a Taliban stronghold……. the correspondent interview several people grieving for the deaths of …..NINETY people! Mostly women and children. We NEED CHANGE, WE NEED A LEADER. To lead our nation…… not just create havoc!

I spoke to my manicurist who has sold her car, started working a second job at a local grocery chain, so that SHE AND HER LITTLE GIRL CAN HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE! SHE WORRIES EVERYDAY THAT….GOD FORBID SOME HEALTH CATASTROPHE COULD BEFALL THEM. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF THESE MOMS HOPING AND PRAYING THAT THEY AND THEIR FAMILIES DO NOT GET SICK!

I AM SUPPORTING SEN. OBAMA BECAUSE WE NEED SOMEONE TO SPEAK FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT WEALTHY, WHO ARE THE HARD WORKING AMERICANS………THAT DESERVE BETTER………..DESERVE HEALTH INSURANCE………..DESERVE A NATION WHO IS NOT A WAR-MONGER…….BUT A NATION OF HOPE. OF POSSIBILITIES!

AS DON QUIXOTE SAYS, "ONWARD TO GLORY!" AMERICA!

I think that he can.

Jason   August 27th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

WOW WOW… Really are you that simple?

Examine what? You think he hasn't already faced enough scrutiny?

There are 2 and only 2 qualifications to be President: 1: Age 35 and older, 2: Been born in the U.S.

McCain was born on a ship in the Panama Canal (not really a U.S. Citizen in my opinion)

I am also white, non-religious and am proud of America, IF he gets elected maybe America has the chance to recover, but if McCain is, we will become a 3rd world nation quickly!!

Obama/Biden 2008.. We MUST elect them, no way , no how to McCain!!

Hillary is a genius , she played the game well. Had she kept her delegates and had a full floor vote, Obama would have went down in flames. Hillary is a very calculating politician. She knows McCain will win and she will become president in 2012. For this I applaud her.

Luke   August 27th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Dear Clinton supporters,
If your candidate had hired the kind of advisors she really needed and had run a campaign as well as Obama's she would have won. If her campaign staff had not been so disgruntled and back-stabbing each other she would have not had to waste precious time and news space dealing with it. If your candidate had not been caught lying about her trip to Kosovo, combined with other exaggerations of her experience, it would have improved her credibility. If your candidate's husband had not shot off his mouth with reckless "observations" you could have kept many of your votes that went to Obama. If your candidate's husband had not cheated on her continually throughout their marriage and then lied about it as President under oath she wouldn't have had the baggage to bring with her to the White House that many objected to and why they refused to vote for her. And most importantly, if Hillary had bowed out of the race in February when all of the numbers showed she could not win the nomination, you wouldn't all have spent so much money, time, energy, and emotion and would have long ago ended your grief that has turned into misdirected bitterness and division. Please. Put the responsibility for losing this election where it belongs – on your candidate's shoulders. And if you're truly a Hillary supporter you'll get over it and get going to help Obama win this election. As your candidate so eloquently stated – our future, your children's future, is at stake.
Sincerely,
An Obama supporter
