Mike Huckabee said Thursday he is not McCain's vice presidential pick.
Mike Huckabee said Thursday he is not McCain's vice presidential pick.

(CNN) – Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee told supporters Thursday he would not be John McCain’s running mate, and emphasized that he was never vetted by McCain’s presidential campaign.

"I have never been contacted by the McCain campaign at any point about the VP slot," Huckabee wrote in the statement posted on his political action committee’s Web site. "I have never been asked for any information, background, etc., so as I have said repeatedly in interviews, I didn’t consider myself to be under any consideration."

"I think people thought I was being coy and just not talking, but I have built my political life on trying to shoot straight and tell it as it is and as I see it," he added. “I have been honest in telling you that I had no reason to believe I was ever seriously considered or “vetted” for the ticket."

Huckabee, whose surprising win in the Iowa caucuses, helped derail rival Mitt Romney's presidential bid. His position on issues such as same sex marriage and abortion made him a favorite of social conservatives. Huckabee told supporters he, too, “will await news of who Senator McCain selects.”

“I hope it will be a person with a solid record and solid convictions on the foundation issues that bring many of us to the process,” Huckabee wrote. “I’m taking this unusual step to communicate so it will come from me and not from some of the ridiculous things being said on TV and websites tonight.”

McCain is set to appear with his vice presidential pick in Ohio on Friday.

"I hope it will be a person with a solid record and solid convictions on the foundation issues."

"Solid Convictions?" Sounds like another Huck religious test. In other words: Anyone but that rascal Mitt the Mormon!

Pick Romney, he'll eat Biden for lunch.

chris   August 29th, 2008 3:34 am ET

GO on your knees and thank God Mr. Huckabee.

Nvtr1   August 29th, 2008 3:31 am ET

If Huckabee's claims are correct (and I have no grounds/reasons to believe otherwise), let's see how much media attention/focus is going to be given to the fact that the "runner-up" of the republican primary (who effectively derailed the Romney campaign with his Iowa victory), was never even vetted/considered for vp!!

Can we say in advance — "Double standard?!?"

Bob in Austin, TX.   August 29th, 2008 3:04 am ET

If you vote republican, you've either had your head stuck in the sand for the last eight years or it was up your ….

who cares about mike huckabee that guy is so orthodox he cant even have sugar..boring losers and the gop

John K   August 29th, 2008 2:43 am ET

It does not matter. There is no reason to elect McCain. If its Lieberman, there would be a revolt (because he's not sufficiently revolting) and if its Romney, change their name to the "Hopelessly Square And Clueless Party".

La Raza   August 29th, 2008 2:41 am ET

Let us all say AMEN!!!!

Dr John   August 29th, 2008 2:40 am ET

Michelle, grow up and go feed your elephant! Eight years of Bush/Cheney Hell on earth. Bush and Cheney did nothing about abortion, lots of washington talk but no action. You and millions like you bought into Bush's lies and deceipt in 2000 and 2004 and you are still spouting the GOP talking points. Take that log out of your own eye before you start on the speck in mine.

Obama in a tight race, but President nonetheless.

JP   August 29th, 2008 2:29 am ET

Here's the thing. McCain ran in 2000. Did he try again in 2004? Maybe before 2000?

If the American people didn't think he was good enough then (and that Bush was better!), why didn't they elect him then? Is he like fine wine? Does he get better with age?

mississippi   August 29th, 2008 2:29 am ET

David from Berkeley, CA   August 29th, 2008 2:23 am ET

Huckabee would have been a bad fit, anyhow.

Romney or Pawlenty is the likely choice. Romney seems to have the greater name recognition and the conservative cred. Problem is, the many evangelicals (read: Southerners) don't trust Mormons.

The problem with Pawlenty is that he's relatively unkown outside of Minnesota and educating the electorate on Pawlenty would sap valuable resources that McCain can ill afford.

As long as the "social conservative" base insists on an abortion litmus test, Ridge and Lieberman are untouchable.

Whoever, John McCain picks for his VP, he's got a tough road to hoe coming out of Minneapolis.

Ryan   August 29th, 2008 2:21 am ET

I'd like to see a McCain-Ridge ticket. That'd certainly shake up the electoral map a bit…………..

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   August 29th, 2008 2:20 am ET

They should use Romney's soundbites against McCain whether he chooses him or not.

2 can play that game.

Maybe we can use Huckabees too!

Colleen Klug   August 29th, 2008 2:20 am ET

I feel the faint stirrings of hope…we need Obama, Biden, Clinton(s), and everyone to keep the momentum going..and take back our country from the pillagers who have controlled it's future for too long…
go-bama!

David, Santa Rosa, CA   August 29th, 2008 2:19 am ET

This headline reads as though Huckabee didn't want to be his VP. I wonder how many turned down the offer of being VP? I wonder who (other than McCain) has sold thier soul?

Jake Utah   August 29th, 2008 2:16 am ET

I certainly wish Huckabee would have been on McCain's ticket. As a lifelong Republican who has never voted for anyone on the national ticket except a Republican, and am totally committed to Obama Biden 08, I would love that my vote for Obama would count in Utah. I think there is a real chance that Arizona and Utah may be the only states that McCain carries. With Huckabee, obviously he would have no chance to carry Utah.

Paul Tubiana   August 29th, 2008 2:01 am ET

If it's not Huckabee for VP, then I have no reason to support a Republican ticket this election. Mike Huckabee represents the America I believe in, no other candidate has earned my vote!

Dan Campbell   August 29th, 2008 1:55 am ET

Mike Huckabee was the best hope for our nation.

Thank God, "Huck" won't be on the ticket……McCain won't win with a bible thumping goober VP

Michelle   August 29th, 2008 1:49 am ET

Obama is a bunch of hot air. Charles, I doubt you went from being a Huckabee supporter to Obama (Mr. I believe in killing babies as they are being born). What, you just abandoned every standard that you ever had? He is a horrible person and I am ashamed of anyone who falls for his lies. Then again, in this nation Britney Spears is a mega star so I guess its what you can expect from easily led people.

Scott, Orlando fl   August 29th, 2008 1:43 am ET

Sad Sad. Boring McCain with Boring Pawlenty. I'm glad Huckabee is not on the ticket, because this Republican knows when we're going to lose. After watching Obama tonight, McCain has no chance. Oh well I guess I will wait until 2012 for a true conservative like Mike. I may vote for McCain… thats it big maybe. He's definitely not getting my money nor work thats for sure.

Thomas5   August 29th, 2008 1:40 am ET

Good. If a man is called to be a pastor, he has no business doing anything but that.

Huckabee is the quintessential "right-wing leftist", as I like to call them. Someone who claims to be on the Right, but clings to the philosophy of the Left. Good riddance, and don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

Now it's time for someone who is truly on the Right to take the reigns in the Republican Party. Unfortunately it's probably not McCain. But until the day comes when the Republicans abandon their love of collectivism and collectivist morality, I suppose it's a "lesser-of-two-evils" vote this November.

Hmmmmmm, maybe Leonard Peikoff could be persuaded to run? He'd have my vote!

Hope LV,NV   August 29th, 2008 1:38 am ET

Huckabee is a good man. I guess this means the Sec. of Lookin' good is in the top two.

Bush should be charged for war crimes. Unfortunately, Republicans, McCain is Bush!! Hopefully enough people see this in him and then there is no need to choose a VP. Take care of our people. Vote OBAMA

Truth Be Told   August 29th, 2008 1:33 am ET

I don't really care. Obama is the BEST! My interpretation of the stage in Denver was that it resembled an American temple where the American People offered up their testimonies, their stories, their struggles, their heartaches and submitted Barack Obama to God as our leader of choice for the United States of America! We need change now! We need Barack Obama!

mississippi   August 29th, 2008 1:33 am ET

Bob R   August 29th, 2008 1:28 am ET

As one who would probably be more inclinded to support McCain I have to admit that McCain has a tough act to follow…..will McCain be able to put together as moving a speech as Obama…..hard to imagine he can……I don't think Al Gore helped Obama however….water levels are rising all around the world ? If they were they'd be doing so universally…..take a walk down to New York habour…..is water now running down the streets ? Gore is up to his big fibs again and sadly you had a whole stadium of people probably believing him…..why ? Because he's s democrat and how can a democrat be wrong ?

Mike   August 29th, 2008 1:27 am ET

Are bumper sticker slogans all you Democrats can come up with?

I've heard nothing of substance other than catchphrases bashing Republicans.

Rave   August 29th, 2008 1:26 am ET

For John McCain there is only one thing to do if he becomes a President - Start new wars and benefit from it. Put American people in more debt and poverty. This is confirmed, gaurenteed..
He's done it 90% of the time with Bush. I think he will be a much worse leader than George Bush.
Mike Huckabee - all he knows is Bible. I think it is a disgrace, that religion, belief, family are brought into politics now a days.
Does John and Mike think that they are more blessed by God than the Democratic candidates and all the Americans voting for Democrats. Then how come the Blessed One : George Bush was responsible today for deaths of over 4000 American troops and tens of thousands Injured, tens of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths?? God doesn't want that… we all know that ..this is just 1 more scare tactic
Who has the right to talk about God's judgement?
All you have to think right now is about your family, job, home.. By voting Republican, you wont be blessed with a million dollar lotto.. Infact there are good chances, you may be punished with a Job loss or Foreclosure.
So Wake the…Up
Obama laid out his plan..150 Billion spent for this country to create new Energy and new Jobs. He will try to fill all the budget gaps that the republicans have left for us and it will be a tough job. Better 8 years than 12 years of War, Poverty, Job Loss, Home Foreclosures..
OBAMA (2008 -16)

hahahaha   August 29th, 2008 1:25 am ET

Mike Huckabee is the only Republican for which I would ever consider voting, but I'm glad it's not him. With Huck out, the entire south is in play. The real conservatives can't stand McCain and most would never vote for Obama, so they'll stay home or vote for Barr.

California Dream   August 29th, 2008 1:02 am ET

Huckabee isnt the VP?!? Im shocked! ………

Andrew   August 29th, 2008 1:00 am ET

Thank God,
I wouldn't want someone who rejects basic tenets of science on any presidential ticket. Never again.

Paul   August 29th, 2008 12:56 am ET

My guess is that McCain now sees Romney as trying too hard to "be the VP nominee" over the past few weeks and resents him for that.

My hope is that McCain chooses Lieberman. He has real experience being the VP on a losing ticket.

coop for Obama/Biden   August 29th, 2008 12:52 am ET

Mike got millions of votes but isnt on the ticket. But why? Because John didn't like the truth.

I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this message.

Proud Voter   August 29th, 2008 12:50 am ET

McCain has a short list of bad VP's . First the guy from Minnesota inexperienced and no charisma, didn't the bridge fall down under his watch? Then we have Lieberman the "Confused Democrat", don't forget Ridge the pro-life candidate who the Rush Limbaugh's of the party will picket and for the most funny of all the choices Mitt Romney the plastic Morman remember how close to punches he and McCain came to at the debate !

Ted malone   August 29th, 2008 12:47 am ET

It's a shame that Huckabee won't be the VP pick, he would have been the best selection for McCain. I just pray that McCain picks someone other than the flip flopper Romney.

Jake   August 29th, 2008 12:45 am ET

Huckabee is a goofus and aside from moral issues like abortion and same sex marriage, I'm not even really sure he's intellectually conservative. I'd like to see a Mac and Mitt ticket.

M in MN   August 29th, 2008 12:41 am ET

MN person here who is afraid that the candidate is going to Pawlenty. What a sad comment for the US that he is all that the GOP can come up with…not that it matters, given Obama's sure win in November.

We in MN, however, would be happy to be rid of the "P."

Laura   August 29th, 2008 12:41 am ET

I don't think anyone cares who the R VP is though. With all the republican spin about what an "egomaniac" Obama was to move to Invesco Field, the fact is, he filled Invesco. McCain is having problems filling a 12,000 seat venue.

I might not agree with you 50% of the time but you're a heck of alot better than anyone else they got! And that's the truth. Thanks Mike, I hope good things come your way!!

I'm freaked out by the fact that he relies so heavily on religion in his decision/policy making, but otherwise, I think he's a good guy. Probably would have made a good choice.

Romney seems like a total psychopath. I can't stand the way he turns into an 8 year old whenever a reporter or an opponent contradicts him and doesn't swallow his fantasy whole. It seems psychologically unhealthy.

TimD   August 29th, 2008 12:37 am ET

Jay   August 29th, 2008 12:32 am ET

My friends, for 5 years McCain didn't even vet Cheney, even though he would been McCain's first choice for VP. That is because John McCain was in a jail, as a Vietnam POW.

Service Member...   August 29th, 2008 12:32 am ET

With Obama getting his internet funds from the Middle East and McCain making HORRIBLE decisions on his VP pick, it is hard not to write in a candidate.

Jatovi, NC   August 29th, 2008 12:32 am ET

No one thought you were going to be the choice Mike, but thanks for the heads up. My question is who asked if you were going to be?

California Gold   August 29th, 2008 12:31 am ET

Mr. Huckabee it speaks volumes of your character, integrity and value system that McCain would NOT consider you for the VP slot. Many Republicans are avoiding the Republican convention because McCain is such bad news. Even Calif. Governor Arnold Swartznegger is claiming he won't attend the Republican convention because the state legislature hasn't approved a budget. Of course, it never stopped Arnold from leaving the state before. Heck the first year he was in office the same thing happened and he went on vacation to Austria!

Count your blessing Mr. Huckabee. McCain is political poison.

Steve - southern Illinois   August 29th, 2008 12:26 am ET

I didn't know he was being considered. I don't care anyway. Just wondering if this blog will get more than 25 comments.

chip   August 29th, 2008 12:26 am ET

I don't agree too much with Huck's policies but I think he is a good guy and I really do like him personally. A straight-shooter is right on.

Mr. X   August 29th, 2008 12:26 am ET

Failing to seriously consider Huckabee will probably turn out to be a mistake on McCain's part. I realize that he makes economic conservatives unhappy, but no single candidate appeals to all factions of a major party. The GOP faces an opponent with a highly motivated base and campaign activists this electoral cycle. The only candidates for president during the primary season who remotely had this effect on Republican suppporters were Huckabee and Ron Paul (admittedly with widely divergent sets). Obviously, Paul isn't a plausible VP choice, but Huckabee could have been, and would have maximized turnout amongst religious conservatives. In a close election, this might have helped McCain's cause. It's hard to imagine Romney or Pawlenty contributing near as much from the #2 spot.

GOP said Obama's speech was misleading??? McCain is lock step with Bush on the misleading front. Bush misled us into an Illegal war.. McCain is a liar, a junkie and a womanizer and a racist.

A vote for McCain is a vote for World War 3.. Mark my words!!

Huckabee is a joke. He is a has been and should go back to the bible and lie some more!!

Caroline   August 29th, 2008 12:11 am ET

Huckabee will be one of the reasons McCain ends up choosing Pawlenty over Romney. Huckabee's comments in recent weeks can be perceived as a threat to disparage Romeny amongst evangelicals, Huckabee's core base. McCain could not afford to disenfranchise this group. By posing this threat, Huckabee may have had an influence on this election but at the same time, has destroyed his future in the GOP.

Jon   August 29th, 2008 12:11 am ET

Tonight before Obama started his nomination speech. I was very angry because I veiwed a letter from Huckabee stating he was not the VP, I was an avid Huckabee supporter. But now I am Happy McCain did not pick Huckabee. Cause I know now after watching Obama that McCain cannot win. I was a Huckabee supporter and probably will campaign for him in 2012., but this year, I am now an Obama supporter.

The "Big Tent" has plenty of holes. Traditional GOP who don't believe in Bush/McCain fiscal policy; GOP who want strength, but with integrity, grit and diplomacy, not on a mistake or go-it-alone; GOP who still believe in high values and cannot abide torture; those who think the economy is sacred; split on abortion, yet want a conservative Supreme Court… it'll be an interesting dog and pony show next week.

G. Rodriguez   August 28th, 2008 11:55 pm ET

Too bad, because Huckabee was the only Republican candidate that had a sense of decency and who I could trust. Romney makes me want to put my wallet in my front pocket. Pawlenty makes me yawn. As for the former Democrat, weasel.
