McCain said Thursday he has not yet chosen his running mate.
McCain said Thursday he has not yet chosen his running mate.

UPDATE: CNN has confirmed McCain's interview was taped Wednesday, not Thursday morning as originally reported.

(CNN) — He is expected to appear with his running mate in less than 24 hours, but John McCain said Thursday he has yet to decide who that person will be.

Plans are in place for the Arizona senator to appear with his pick for the Republicans vice presidential nominee at an Ohio rally Friday, the day after Barack Obama formally accepts the Democratic presidential nomination. The McCain campaign is hoping to have 15,000 people at the Ohio rally — roughly five times the size of his largest crowd to date.

But the presumptive Republican presidential nominee told a Pennsylvania radio station Thursday morning that he has not settled on a nominee after he was asked if Pennsylvania’s former governor, Tom Ridge, or Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, was his VP pick. Both men are expected to join McCain a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

"I haven't decided yet so I can't tell you," he told KDKA NewsRadio.

Those comments come hours after multiple sources tell CNN Thursday night that McCain has settled on who his running mate will be and plans to notify that person later Thursday.

A knowledgeable Republican source says there the matter was settled at a major meeting of McCain's advisers Wednesday.

#1: Colin Powell
#2: Florida Governor – Charlie Crist !!!

Otherwise this race is over!!! He is not going to get Pennsylvania or Ohio.

Whoever McCain picks for VP will have an easy time doing better for the Republican ticket than Biden. Obama was up 3 to 4 in the polls before Biden. Now the polls show a tie. And it is probably tied because Obama is getting a tiny bump from convention. Without that McCain would be up by 2 or 3. Biden has cost Obama at least 4 points in the polls. Good move Obama! Biden will eat up the Republicans, yah right. Bring it on. There aren't any Republicans scared of Obama/Biden. Just another Gore/Liberman or Kerry/Edwards. They went down too. Been there done that.

Why do you keep letting SHARON post on every subject??   August 28th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

It has to be Romney because you don't have the stones to go Pro-Choice. As soon as that happens, Moveon.org will come back with the same type of ads with Romney laughing at you and you calling him a PIG.

Also, Romney's mormonism won't play well in the south and while McCain will still win the south, if the numbers can come out in GA, it may be in play.

Pawlenty is a walking mullet. Nobody knows him. They will be like, "WHO?"

Truthfully, I wished McCain would pick ole Rudy G…

Maybe we can get the crew from CHEATERS to confront you on both of your affairs.

Dear CNN Moderator, even though you may not share my views please post my comments as they follow the CNN Comment Policy and I post the truth. Sometimes truth hurts, such is life, but it's your responsibility to provide an unadulterated reporting of the news with journalistic integrity.

I believe that either two things are going on in the McCain campaign. Either he's scrambling to pick a VP in response to Obama's choice. We've seen his following Obama's leadership throughout this campaign, we've seen his dependance on Obama. Or, perhaps McCain's advisors have slected a VP for him, but still haven't told him who he or she will be. In this case it's quite understandable that all of the advisors at the meeting know who it'll be, but McCain doesn't, a day before he's suppose to reveal who that person is.

Either way… the fact remains that while McCain may have been a good soldier, he's no leader.

indy in tx   August 28th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

I don't know what it is about Romney, but I can't stand him! He seems like the kind of man who treats his household help poorly, is rude to store clerks and new waiters. I don't get that same vibe about McCain.

ObamaAllTheWay   August 28th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

He can pick 5 running mates and still will not win this election, America does not need third term of Bush, cheney, karl Rove and Mccain. Time for the new generation to lead this nation give us the change we desperatly need.

"Up To the last minute, McSame still can not make the most important decision; of who his VP will be. So how can we trust him to be there for American, to make a swift decision if he is to be president.?"

Oh, please! This is such nonsense. Obama supporters have nothing better to do than bash, bash, bash. This is no different than all the stupid and conflicting reports the media put out on Obama's choice. It went on and on until CNN finally announced it was Biden.

Enlightened Voter   August 28th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Why can't he decide? He's had waaaaayyy more time than Barack to decide and yet he still can't make up his mind. It is sort of a clue to what his presidency will be like.

Mc Cain needs help he can't do it by himself. He may already pick someone and forget whom he chose. I wouldn't be surprise if he got to the convention with 2 VP.

CNN = Jerry Springer of news   August 28th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I agree with sophiedog, McCain's puppeteers have already picked his VP, they just haven't told the candidate yet. McCain has not made any decisions for himself in months. When he was answering questions on his own he was spewing too many gaffes, so his handlers have reigned him in. I am really looking forward to the debates between McCain/Obama and Biden and whoever he is going to eat for lunch. The hoopla for the Republican VP is going to be a big letdown if any of the frontrunners are picked.

Really CNN, you can't get a headline right. Then you say in a headline on Obama's speach tonight "Obama expected to address change in speech". Really that man who is for chainging the change that is changing change may talk about change when starting his campaign on change? That's a change. I hope he doesn't change his mind and force CNN to change it's headline.

PUMA moving on...   August 28th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I'm so proud of President Clinton and Hillary — even more I'm proud of those of you who have acknowledged how important the Clinton's are to our party and country. Bill was a fantastic president — and Bill was right, Obama will be a great leader as well. Thank you!!

The Clintons reminded me being an American is the most important thing. Emotions were high all around and things were said that most of us really didn't mean. We are a family; we will fight, we will disagree, and in the end, we'll do what's right for our country.

The Republicans do owe us an apology…

JulesT   August 28th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

If McCain is going to announce his choice tomorrow, and today he does not know who it is going to be, then he is either not telling the truth or did not plan well…kind of like the war in Iraq.

Saladin   August 28th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

This is worth repeating,

"As a Republican – I think McCain is a good guy – no real issues with him….he's not the waffling demon he was made out to be while watching the Democrats bash him – however – I am still supporting Obama for President…as much as I hate siding with Clintons….Obama is what the country needs now…"

And its the same case with me!

Its time for change 08!

Chris   August 28th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

The so-called leak that McCain had decided who his running mate would be was clearly orchestrated b.s. by McCain staffers to distract from Biden's speech last night. I was very disappointed in CNN for biting on this "leak". Besides, who cares if he decided or didn't decide if no one knows what the decision was? That's not news. That's just manipulation of a gullible media for political purposes. I thought CNN was smarter than that.

I am a democrat-leaning independent, but will be voting for John McCain. I think he has the integrity that this country's political atmosphere currently needs. I just wish his supporters were smart enough to realize that and act accordingly. If McCain doesn't feel the need to make crude attacks on his opponent to win this election, why do his supporters? Focus on the issues; there is more than enough right there that points to the fact that McCain should be the next president. This message is particularly targeted to you Christopher Lester.

Mark   August 28th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Who Cares. This is a man (McCain) who cheated on his first wife, Carol, numerous times. When Carol was partially crippled in a car accident, John McCain filed for divorce. In fact, he registered for a marriage license in Arizona in order to marry Cindy before his divorce with Carol was even final.

This is the man who says he always puts his country first? Sounds to me like he puts himself first.

Interesting to see how the McCain campaign played CNN last night on this "Breaking News" in an effort disrupt their live coverage of the Democratic convention. John King even had two Blackberries going at the same time.

It will also be interesting to see how many of these stunts CNN will allow McCain to try to pull.

The best pick for McCain is Karl Rove! Joshua College Station Texas   August 28th, 2008 11:52 am ET

I think McCain picked Pawlenty and told his advisors, and they leaked it, and the media hated it. So now they are re-thinking the decision. McCain is trying to muster up the energy to choose Romney, whom he despises, because Romney is such a greasy two-faced used-car salesman. But Romney has the reputation for being good on the economy (which isn't at all well-founded–he only knows how to make a sale and make a profit, not account for the budgets of people from economic strata other than his own). So Romney will get the nod. Down with McCain-Romney!

For 20+ years he listen to a Rev. who did nothing but preach that God should D**n America. While Obama was in a Radical Islamic shool in Africa McCain was in Military school learning how to fight for this country not destroy it. While Obama was in the Senate doing nothing for Chicago McCain was winning the Battle for Finance Reform in the USA. While Obama was getting educated in how to act like a Christian, McCain was being desicrated in a Rathole in a war drug out by democrats for years when North VietCong never even attacked the United States. If it's not Ridge, Jindal, or Palin, it's going to be a very very very boring pick. Romney is a flip-flopper. Lieberman generates about as much excitement as meatloaf for dinner. Portman is the Republican equivalent of Chet Edwards…we don't know who he is. The right pick is Ridge if McCain is still his own man.

Baron Dave   August 28th, 2008 11:45 am ET

And now an announcement of "no announcement". Republicans are trying to manipulate the news cycle again, and you're letting them.

What's next, a terror alert?

Chris Monte   August 28th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Romney's been notified.

jim   August 28th, 2008 11:45 am ET

McCain is making a fool out of himself on what should be considered a historic day in our nations history.

Abby   August 28th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Hilarious. No one really cares so I wish they would stop trying to create ‘buzz’ . hehe…lets talk about the issues. What did you vote against the 'violence against women act', Senator McCain? How about against equal pay for women? How about against better healthcare for our veterans? And so on…ISSUES PLEASE.

german   August 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

who care?

Lee   August 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I don't believe this for one second. Certainly he's picked his VP if he's going to announce who it is in less than 24 hours. Why can't he just be honest and say they are working through all necessary steps to have things in place in order to announce the candidate, rather than be dishonest about it. I would hope that a decision of this magnitude would not be left to the last minute.

John B. From New Hampshire   August 28th, 2008 11:44 am ET

hmmm, a campaign that has no clue what's happening within their organization? wonder what that reminds me of? oh yeah… OUR CURRENT ADMINISTRATION!!! NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

beevee   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

The best choice for this old coot's VP may be Cheney.

proud army and navy mom   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

say what??? Every news sourcehas been reporting that he has selected his VP and mcsenile says " I don't know yet"!!!

Is this a case of the his campaign trying to push him into a decision without letting john know first. What did they forgot to send mcbush the memo? Talk about inept…………

Sherry, Atlanta   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

HONESTLY. . .DOES ANYONE REALLY CARE?

OBAMA/BIDEN '08-'12

Marie in Ohio   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

There he goes again mis-representing the truth!

Sandy   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

He's decided, he hasn't decided ………..

You people analyze this

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO CONTROL THIS SO CNN FLIP-FLOPS ON EVERYTHING.

I get my news from CSPAN and PBS after having PAINFULLY watched Mon. and had to listed to 3 or 4 air-heads talk over each other AND over the speakers.

CNN is not a good news channel. Bet Ted Turner would fire the lot of you.

Censor this AMERICAN out again CNN – we expect it from the likes of you !!!!!

mike   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Somebody's lying. Was it decided yesterday or not? Or did you email every reporter in America that you had decided, right before Biden's speech, as an attempt to distract and deflate?

Anonymous   August 28th, 2008 11:43 am ET

who cares

Jamie -- Asheville, NC   August 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Anyone want to take a guess as to what percentage of those 15,000 attendees will fall asleep during the proceedings?

McCain is every bit as dull and painful to watch as our current president.

Scooter Mccain   August 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

And who cares. This loser is going down.
OBAMA……08

Please.   August 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Let it be Whitman or Powell.

You'll have my former Dem vote.

Filipina   August 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Who cares who you pick we dont want you.

Latina for Obama...NJ   August 28th, 2008 11:42 am ET

I thought he did!! what a lair!!

Peter of Oregon   August 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Maybe McCain's advisers picked his VP, but have yet to inform him of who it'll be so he doesn't know but they know.

McCain's been a good soldier, but he's no leader.

S. Boatman   August 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Keep People In Suspense Until No One Cares Anymore Mccain! I Have Lost Interest In Your Choice Long Ago!

Bud InTexas   August 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

McCain is goint to Minor League ballparks to do a tour with his new VP.

Ha Ha Ha…..

The minor league ticket in minor league parks.

Mccain is small, not only in height (5′6″), but in his disposition.

Wake up GOP'ers – Not so great OLD party.

joey   August 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Who cares really?

Look at the guy, i mean LOOK AT HIM, look at him when he speaks about being a POW or when he talks about obama. Its all a bunch of hot air blowing off of his head. He always has this nervous twitch to go with it. you talk about having body language experts reading hillary. What about mccain? He shakes more then the bobble head doll on my dashboard.

The guy brings nothing to the table that any sane person wants to hear about. Go get your teeth cleaned too, its disgusting watching your gummy yellow smile!

OBAMA BIDEN!!

Eric in South Carolina   August 28th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Figures…the man can't decide on where he stands on anything and he expects us to believe he's a leader and is ready to be president?

Suzette   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Another moment of "John McCain does not speak for the campaign"? People in his circle report that he's made a decision, then he contradicts them and says he hasn't. What's this man smokin?

Mauri   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

To be 100 percent true, it has to come from the "horse's mouth." Obviously, he hasn't spoken (neighed) yet. But here in Texas, we're putting our money on Mitt to win, place AND show.

Jeb   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

And there you have it, folks.
A prime example of McCain's coveted decision making skills. Or lack there of.
Make up your mind already, Old man.

Kim, Charlotte, NC   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Thats because he can't remember.

Jim   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Ok. This Ticker note was posted about 2 hours AFTER a Ticker note saying McCain HAD decided but was not telling yet. What gives, CNN? Are you not paying attention to what you are posting and in what order? These notes are even right next to each other.

Great reporting job, guys!

Chris L.   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I think this means his first choice turned him down. Hell, I wouldn't want to ruin my career by drowning on that sinking ship either.

Gnomepark   August 28th, 2008 11:40 am ET

"I haven't decided yet so I can't tell you," – McCain

NEXT PARAGRAPH:

"A knowledgeable Republican source says there the matter was settled at a major meeting of McCain's advisers Wednesday."

So either McCain is lying to us….or someone isn't very "knowledgeable".

Kelby from Houston, TX   August 28th, 2008 11:39 am ET

No VP choice for McCain yet? Wow, it is truly AMAZING how much I don't care. If I had a nickel for the amount of times ….I DON'T CARE! Who ever it is, like McCain, will be a lamb to slaughter come Novemver. The public will show that this over analysis of commentators and polls means nothing. NOTHING!
OBAMA WILL WIN McCAIN WILL LOSE AND AMERICA WILL RISE AGAIN. This age of anti intellectualism will stop. Our economy will return to its former strength AND WE WILL NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN!!!

DEMOCRATS '08 AND FOREVER!

Vet. 4 Obama   August 28th, 2008 11:39 am ET

LOL
Didn't he say he had decided yesterday?
the guy must of bailed knowing it was a lossing ticket.
He should ask GB JR.

Darla (Edmonton, Canada)   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

He probably made a choice yesterday … and forgot he made it overnight! Is anyone surprised that he's asleep at the wheel?!?

NE Pennsylvania Obama 08/12   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Who cares that he has selected a running mate? Whoever that person is doesn't have enough economic expertise in the world to help that guy out….

Mullen, Texas   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

It doesn't really matter who the VP he choses. McBush is destined to lose.

McClinton   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Just leaked – McCain has chosen Hillary for VP. Now known as the McClinton ticket.

David   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

I had heard a rumor that in order to add youth and vitality to the ticket, McCain was going to pick Jesse Helms.

Peter of Oregon   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

WoW… this is who's representing the Republicans this election. He's had all of this time and still doesn't know who it'll be. I guess he's really scrambling to respond to Obama's pick as he's done throughout this campaign.

John McCain's been a good soldier, but he's no leader. He said he'd release the VP choice on Friday while on Thursday he still doesn't know who that person is.

Danny   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Because of his dirty campaign add against Obama from Clinton and Biden, McCain is scared to select somebody who has accused him before.
I guess he will have to run all by himself. Good for nothing creature.

Keating Five   August 28th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Cheney hasn't had time to tell him who to pick yet?

Spread fear, create hate – vote Republican

McCain/Romney   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

McCain all the way!

John you will make the right decision; it will be that decision that overshadows Obama and HIS circus which is taking place this week.

McCain/Romney!!!!!!!!

Romney can hold his own against Biden!

The Democrats speak of the larger crowds that Obama attracts; celebrities usually pull in lots of people, however at the end of the show, it's simply just that, a "show."

Shari, NY   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Nothing new! Same thing happened with Sen. Obama. What the Republicans have to worry about is their Convention being overshadowed by two hurricanes which are setting sights on the Gulf Coast and East Coast respectively, just about the time that they will be trying to put on their show. Sorry, but it seems as if forces are against you folks.

Scott, Wichita   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

The title of this article on the home page is "McCain picks his VP"

and the title here is "McCain says no VP choice yet"

which one is it?

Concerned INDEPENDENT CT voter   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Greg, NY   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

He said he knew, now he doesn't know. So CNN, don't you feel like you got played last night?

Played like a violin.

Gene Furlong   August 28th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison is John McCains running mate.

Sally   August 28th, 2008 11:36 am ET

There he goes — McPOW — lying again — in some feeble attempt (with the full support of the corporate media) to move the attention to his lame candidacy! Well I, for one, will focus all my attention today on Senator Barack Obama and the hope he brings to the United States of America!

Shrill for Hill   August 28th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Maybe he forgot, just like he forgot how many homes he owns. It's understandable, he is getting on in years.

PS – Did you know he used to be a POW?

Joe American   August 28th, 2008 11:36 am ET

no pick could help more of the same McCaine!

Don   August 28th, 2008 11:36 am ET

I bet is either Ridge or Lerberman. He has to do something different looking at the success of the DNC convention.

We're NOT "your friends"!!!   August 28th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Uhh, who cares.?!

Sue   August 28th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Another flip flop by sidekick – first he made his choice, now he hasn't! yeah, this is what we really nedd for another four years!

Dan, Ohio   August 28th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Someone's a procrastinator.

Tony   August 28th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Isnt this false advertising?! I clicked your link thinking that John McCain picked up his VP early! Bad on you CNN!!

Anonymous   August 28th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Everyone should read the Time article posted at the bottom of CNN's home page about McCain's prickly interview.

As an Obama supporter, now I really can't wait for the debates.

Robert in Seattle   August 28th, 2008 11:35 am ET

If he can't remember how many houses he owns, perhaps he can't remember who he picked for VP and needs to start all over again.

Wrong man for the job.

Obama – Biden 08

brad   August 28th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Looks like someone turned him down.

bernj   August 28th, 2008 11:34 am ET

I think there is a very good chance that it will be Kay Bailey Hutchison. Ridge and Romney both don't add much. Hutchison would be a rather bold move and likely present much more of a problem for Obama-Biden.

That said, in the end Obama will still prevail….thank God.

MBFLA   August 28th, 2008 11:34 am ET

He just can't remember who he decided upon. Lieberman will have to whisper in his ear.

Keith, GA   August 28th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Mitt Romney or no vote from me.

REAL NEWS OR SELLING HYPE?   August 28th, 2008 11:34 am ET

How about a story on the march on the DNC last night in Denver?

Oh- you say thats not important, to show dissent?

Just keep reading the nonsense your fed america… dont question anything…

Frank "Grimey" Grimes   August 28th, 2008 11:33 am ET

I am still pulling for Sarah Palin. I'd be happy with pretty much anybody as I'm voting for McCain regardless of who he picks. But I think that Palin would give him a better shot.

Go McCain

John McCain spent 5 ½ awful years as a POW being tortured by his jailers.
McCain was one of the very few that was broken by captures. He recorded over 50 anti U.S messages.

No one goes through that experience without deep physiological scares.

Knowing John McCain will have his finger on the nuclear button, why are his post POW physiological treatment records kept secret. Why are his Anti U.S statements are kept secrets.

Did he have the same anger issues before he was a POW?

What ongoing therapy does John McCain take as a result of his POW experience?

We have the right to know all the details if we are to make an informed decision.

CB   August 28th, 2008 11:32 am ET

Tactics – remember the green backdrop on the night Obama went over the top. The simple historic significance of this moment for all Americans is being trampled by Republican tactics to take the focus off of it.

Four More Months!   August 28th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Of course not – this is a ploy to keep media attention on him.
