McCain is congratulating Obama in a campaign ad Thursday.

(CNN) – The McCain campaign has finally released the television ad it called "historic" and "exciting" earlier Thursday.

Set to air in key campaign states to coincide with Barack Obama's formal acceptance of the Democratic presidential nomination, the Arizona senator is featured looking directly into the camera to congratulate his presidential

Watch: McCain congratulates Obama in new ad

"Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America," McCain says in the ad. "Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations."

"How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day," McCain also says in reference to the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech. "Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight Senator, job well done."

The upbeat ad is a marked departure from the slew of negative commercials the McCain campaign has released all week as it aims to divert media attention away from the Democratic National Convention.

Those ads have directly questioned Obama's readiness to be president, and most feature past criticisms from his chief primary opponent, Hillary Clinton - prompting the New York senator to directly distance her self from them earlier in the week. But Evan Tracey of TNS Media Intelligence/CMAG, CNN's consultant on television ad spending, reports the majority of those ads have yet to air in most battleground TV markets.

He announces a SUPRIZE? shouldent he have done this just to do the right thing?

Peter (CA)   August 28th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Reason,

I don't completely disagree with everything you say but McCain himself said he agrees with Bush policies 95% of the time. What does that say to you?

As far as the ire from the "liberals". We give as good as we get. Just check out the comments above and below yours.

Ralph   August 28th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

This happen on this day, was no coincidence. It was planed well in advance. Good luck Obama..

Belle2   August 28th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Why do Obama fans have to be so indignant all the time. Could it be that Obama simply inspires hatred and animosity-so much for hope and change. Of course, Obama has never said what kind of change!!

Will, NJ   August 28th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

What was this trying to accomplish? It's nice that he's congratulating Senator Obama, but how does this work for him?

Sara   August 28th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Sen Obama is very presidential and very considerate.

Sen McCain is a little old child who stabs people in the back. Just wait and see.

John Mccain has always been my hero and example of how members of the senate should be. I was very excited to support him at the beginning when he was authentic and independent. but since after the primaries when he hooked up with Carl Rove, Shawn Hannity, and the hateful Rush Limbaugh, he lost my whole family's respect.
He should be ashamed for giving in to those so call conservatives and their low devisive ways of dealing with fellow americans!!!

Oh Please   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Oh, please. I don't believe that plastic bastard for one second...

john   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

How sad that some are you are so jaded that you can't see goodwill and kindness when it's right in front of you.

I am diehard pro-McCain and I think Obama is a socialist, but given the history of how we have treated blacks in this country, if I were black, I would vote for Obama no matter his policies.

I can appreciate how historic tonight is going to be. I wouldn't vote for Obama because of it but I can absolutely appreciate it and be really, really proud of it. And especially on the 45th anniversary of the greatest speech of the 20th century.

Did anyone see Juan Williams the other night after Michelle Obama's speech? He has been pretty hard on Obama but it was as if the magnitude of the situation hit him all at once. He couldn't keep the tears out of his eyes. Seeing that drove the point home with me in a very profound way. It's hard to explain.

So, enjoy your moment Barry. We're proud of the situation. But here's hoping that Michael Steele or J.C. Watts or Herman Cain becomes the first black president in 4 or 8 years.

CaNiNe SpUnCiKeS   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

The media has a lot to do with this mess. They have sensationalize things that are very trivial. And of course, we are just to gullible to go with it.

Tiffany   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

That is . . . uncomfortably brilliant. Well-played, McCain. Well-played.

bluebird   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Dear Obama supporters, the rest of the world that doesn't like your candidate is not evil, stupid, the enemy, retarded, racist, or lesbians. Please get over yourselves.

Tim F. (Honolulu HI)   August 28th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

WOW! I can't believe all the idiots on here posting about how bad McCain is for having negative ads! I mean are you trying to tell me that Obama has not done one negative ad? If so he must be the cleanest politician ever!.... NOT! I mean look at how nasty Billary Clinton was with her ads of Obama. Now she is supporting someone just a few months ago she said would not be a suitable president.

I have still not made up my mind who I am going to vote for, but I can tell you that it was very cordial.

paul   August 28th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

I agree it should not be a pat on his head but a kick in his pants.

Obama needs to be kicked a good many times from now till election night.

Yes you people that speak of how the GOp and McCain are nothing but haters but after reading a few things said from you people its the pot calling the kettle black.

Reason   August 28th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

It's sad that people's blind hatred for all things Republican force them to lump McCain in with Bush/Cheney's disaster. Yeah, the country needs change, the the repubs know it. That's why they've finally given McCain the nod.

He has been lambasted in his presedential runs in 96 and 2000 by his own party, because he was too liberal for their tastes. He has always been an honorable man during his career in public service. He stood by his convictions even when it caused him grief within his own party. Nobody's perfect, but he definitely doesn't deserve the ire that he receives from alot of people on the liberal side of the fence.

NOBAMA_BIDONE 08   August 28th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

John McCain will be the next President of the USA.

He will be elected Because he has experience and will do the job.

Obama is just a rock star and his running mate Biden is a plagizrier.

Who would you rather have answering the 3 am phone call.

Clueless Obama or Rock solid McCain.

zach   August 28th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

good try mccain, but that is honestly the worst attempt at sincerity i have seen in a long time. this ad seems loaded with sarcasm and patronization.

Sara   August 28th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Very nice gesture.

This is all for show. Whether it's Obama or McCain, all of us are like sheep being led to the slaughter. When everything is all said and done, whoever is eventually elected president should make good on their promises. Any supporter who has been really enthusiastic during the primaries and the campaigns shouldn't stop and be complacent once the election is over. To take this country back for the people, the people have to act and do something.

Mccain is a flip-flopping idiot who will say anything to get votes. Obama has a detailed plan, supporters on all sides, and a focus on using our tax dollars at home at the same time he is using diplomacy to reduce anger toward americans abroad. This balanced focus will save our economy, create good jobs, reduce wars.........

This is why I have decided to vote for McCain. He is ready to lead our nation. In 1980, Walter Mondale selected Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, and we all know what happened. Now, the demo's are poised to repeat history, 28 years later. This is truly a great moment.

I have a question, to the guy whose name is "I'm sick and tired of Nobama", what the hell does 'Nobama' mean? I understand using it in the context of "No how, no way, nobama", but the way you are saying it, it almost sounds like you're attaching the 'N' word to Obama.

Just go away you racist jerk.

AntiBrenda   August 28th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

McCain voted agaist the MLK Day bill because they refused to remove another paid holiday to offset the cost like most other states had done.

There's a reason why we now have 'Presidents Day'.

In Houston   August 28th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

It's historic and exciting to offer congratulations? Considering Mc Cain never supported observing MLK day, I might be exciting and historic to him. He's switch out from the negative tactics that haven't polled well.
And, he's taking notes from the Obama campaign that has been more positive. Even people who won't vote for Obama observe that he always congratulates or praises his rivals before critizing them. They would say that he's pandering or paying lip service. Can any critic of Obama call this a sincere gesture? Negativity doesn't pay. Old news, so is this ad.

Judgement and Politics   August 28th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Obama , a big flip-flop.

During all primaies, he was shouting against age-old-Washington-politicians, and now he is with them .

Poor Judgement, , he has failed to live with his words.

VOTE OBAMA.

It seems to be a transparent fact that only certain opinions are chosen to be posted here, so I will sandwich my message between two lines and see what happens. I'm an independent voter. I have researched unbiased sources to make a responsible decision. John (trying not to use his last name which gets an automatic cut to the editing floor) is a moderate. MOderates serve the widest swath of people far better than one who sways to either side. His record of senate votes show a centrist voting style...voting clearly down the middle on issues of: economy, social issues, and foreign affairs. He is the strongest of the two candidates and worth an unbiased look. He is more likely to be the best leader for our country at this time. Just a thought I'm sharing, ... between the lines.

VOTE Obama.

GoMcCain08   August 28th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Well,
This is his first accomplishment in government service since he became the junior Senator from Illinois. Now he can put at least one thing down under accomplishments.

Kevin - Jonesboro, GA   August 28th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

This is his"exciting" ad?!?!?! Kudos for taking a moment to commend Barack but give me a break...this is just another ploy to try and gain some attention when none is deserved.

KC   August 28th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Ya know he just needed to make a statement to the world, why only run it in key states if he is sincere? the rest of us don't count?

Dan (Redmond, WA)   August 28th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

Surprising indeed. As political as it may be.

Saul D- Independent   August 28th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

if McCain honestly meant to solicitate Obama and wanted to show respect and recognize his achievements, he should have waited till after the convention. People are not stupid and i reject his tactics to play with our intelligence. You can compete vigorously but still
respect your opponent. This is Obama's night so please give him the due. Your own day is just few days away!

Jeff in Portland   August 28th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

If I believed this was actually genuine and wasn't a pathetic attempt to try to seem like a different person than the one who has been repeated slamming Obama to anyone who would listen, I might actually appreciate and respect this gesture.

One little ad forced on us by a scheming, Rovian campaign team doesn't change who McCain is.

Joseph   August 28th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Did McCain escape Rove's clutches for a few hours?

In all seriousness, this might be something if McCain was running that "respectful campaign of ideas" he mused about several weeks ago.

It just doesn't fly when you've been calling Obama a cheap suit for the past month.

Next time you have something personal to say, try picking up the phone because Obama's achievement is NOT about you, John.

Bijan   August 28th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

George W. Bush for 8 years has been CEO of corporate America. Will we get a President this year or another CEO for Corporate America. Will obama disband the market based corporate run govt that runs our federal govt or continue more of the same free market corporate supremacy government? If yes, America is doomed. We must find out if this "change" is toward a bigger corporate America or toward taking back our constitutional republic.

Roger from CA   August 28th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Scott Robinson-Woodinville   August 28th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

ATTENTION ALL!

These are the purposes of this ad:

1) Honest congratulations; it's an historical moment
2) Try to come off as the victim of the recent attacks and play the nice guy after all the mud he's slung
3) Try to make Barack look like the ungracious bad guy when he criticizesMcCain in his acceptance speech anyway.

Don't let it distract you. Yes, McCain is more experienced, but his policy proposals are the same proven disasters as Bush's, and will lead to the same results if he's elected. So don't elect him.

Today all Americans are proud of Barack Obama and what he has accomplished. To think we finally have an African-American nominee for President is remarkable. If it were any other election and John McCain wasn't his opponent I would be voting for Obama. However, I have to go with who has the better policies for our country and who has a record of bipartisanship and not just talk. However, that doesn't take away from the true accomplishments of Obama and his supporters. Congrats!

Audrina-Broken Arrow, OK   August 28th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

The Republicans need to back off and let the Dems have their moment. They will have plenty of time during their own convention to have their say. The fact that they would consider what I feel is more of an intrusion to this moment in history with attack ads and statements speaks volumes to me of how insecure they really are about this election. I think it's tacky and they need to stop.

Dj   August 28th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Is this the same man who ABSOLUTELY REFUSED to honor MLK by acknowledging the national holiday in his state? I bet he never thought that decision would be so significant!

It is called "Poetic Justice"

Michael   August 28th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Both sides have had plenty of negative ads throughout this process and it will only get worse. People are saying that McCain's act is just to say "Look at me..." What do you call some guy basically shutting down the city of Denver in a major act of grand-standing. They are all trying to say "Look at me..." It is the game they are playing – they are politicians and at the end of the day they are all friends.
I think either man will do a great job as president, but because of philisophical issues on taxes and the right to live – I will vote for McCain.
I hope whoever gets into office will cut spending and stop the bleeding that Bush and this Democratic congress has allowed to happen.

I have to say that I'm surprised. Hard to say if it was sincere or not but at least it wasn't another attack ad with falsehoods.

Sam   August 28th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Sometimes it takes a bigger man to congratulate someone (even if that someone happens to be your opponent) when they do something right. It's good sportsmanship.

Phil   August 28th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Just a thought- can someone understand the gravity of history here, with Obama officially smashing color barriers in earning the nomination, and think it wonderful? And at the same time, want to defeat him in the race for the White House? I would think so.

I'm still voting for Obama, but come on people- in the realm of issues that ought to drive and influence voters, this isn't one of them: it's a nice gesture, but it's no indicator of policy.

Maybe to John McCain his insults and mockery are all part of the political game.

Maybe to the rest of us, it's time to quit the game playing.

Paul   August 28th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

The positive sentiment is acknowleged, although it is only a way for McCain to get some attention. I susepct that this add is nothing more than a P.R. ploy to try to covey the impression that McCain is not using Rove style negative politics which, in point of fact, he is, has been, and likely will continue using.

tim   August 28th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

This isnt a positive ad.... this is put out because he can't stand all the attention on Obama.

So, will Obama look bad if he doesn't return the favor?

Pam   August 28th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Someone should tell McCain that jealousy is an ugly emotion.

Peter Thickwood   August 28th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Congratulation Barack Obama! ;-)

Oregon4obama   August 28th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I dont know what to think......it seems like a kind gesture....but coming from mccain, it sounds disingenuous....

lil yogini, san diego (north county)   August 28th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Well, I am surprised it is going to be a positive ad. That was nice of him – better than I would have expected.

However, why it was revealed now, when it was supposed to be a SURPRISE? I think he is trying to obscure/deflect all the hoopla going on today about his adviser's majorly idiotic remark about emergency rooms being a form of universal healthcare.

I am still reeling from those statements. This "nice" commercial doesn't erase my disgust.

sabrina01   August 28th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

I'm sorry I can't get over this Healthcare Plan MC SAME has..

Denise   August 28th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Watch out ....It's a TRICK....

Crocus   August 28th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

"Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed." Is he kidding? Obama's historic campaign has been page-one news for more than a year. The whole world will be watching him tonight, perhaps 80,000 of them in person. The premise of this ad is ridiculous!

Alan, Los Angeles, CA   August 28th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

"Historic" is right. McCain goes positive.

anonymouys   August 28th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

mccain why dont you congralute obama on november 4 when he wins this election

Ab-Corpus Christi TX   August 28th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

NIce try, friend.....
Thank but No Thank.!!!.... No more, no way, no McCain !!!

Louis   August 28th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

WAKE UP VOTERS: Everything that is done in a campaign is carefully calculated by experts, polling, and focus groups. If you think McCain did this because he is a nice guy, think again. His goal is to win the Presidency–this ad is purely strategic.

Obama for President!

Jatovi, NC   August 28th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

McCain is trying his hardest to get the spotlight. This is really funny.

sabrina01   August 28th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Do you really think that we think you meant this Give me a Break

Kristina   August 28th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

hahahaha... i had thought he might do this!

BK   August 28th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

You people act like you have never been through a campaign before. This is how they all are. McCain is being gracious. Why are you people so hateful? If this is the people that Obama attracks, who wants to be part of something that negative?

Proud to be Dem   August 28th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

Okay... but couldn't a phone call do the trick? Why spend all the money on TV ads. Seems like he's screaming, "Look at me. I'm such a nice guy!" It might be too late for that, John.

Mark from Naperville, IL   August 28th, 2008 5:49 pm ET

If this had come without all his attack ads preceding it, I may have believed he was sincere. Nothing is without a political motivation.

Bola Muyis   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Wow! Okay this is totally unexpected I must confess, a sucker punch no doubt but I still like it. Am yet to see it but you've gotta admit, it's a nice gesture... Not bad Mr. McCain, not bad at all.

Obama/Biden '08

jane   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

nice ad but i still get the feeling that he's up to something negative and his demeanor is that of someone who simply pretending to play nice. much like knowing that a hurricane is coming and those who don't want you to know saying "that' not a hurricane! that's sunshine! can't you tell?"... mccain is bad news no matter what he and his supporters claim...

tennisguypitt   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Wow! Very gracious, McCain. Why don't you do that for the rest of your ads? If you do, I'll definitely respect you more!

Obama/Biden '08

Debby   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Its a Presidential thing to do.

Annalyse   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

A nice gesture but why not just contact Obama privately to offer congrats? It just seems very contrived.

Olivia   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Let's try to get some attention!!!

Tully   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Good for McCain! You think Obama would do this? No way! He's too busy trying to impress people by giving a speech at a football stadium. Well this american is not impressed! I am impressed by an american hero with morals and values. Oh yea- also a stance on issues!

Sanford   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

So, is that supposed to make us forget all the dirty, false, negative attack ads? Sorry, too little, too late.

Art in LA   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Such a simpleton! McCain–Nobody asked for your approval or wants it. Keep your congratulatory comments for President Bush–your hero.

G   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Well I must admit that was nice but so political he could have easily written a statement and release it to the press. This is in a effort to make him seen as a nice guy instead of the negative attack guy he has been seen as of lately. Either way very historic night indeed.
Obama/Biden 08!

D, Ontario   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

McCain is trying to show himself as "Mr.nice guy" but this does not distance him from the cheap repugnant ads he's been running against Obama.

Recently the President of Georgia praised his friend, John McCain, and said that he had conversations with McCain several times a day. What was discusssed? Did he somehow encourage Saakashvili to attack South Ossetia so that McC could tout his so-called foreign policy experience and sabre-rattle against Russia? Now Cindy is doing "good works" in Georgia .... Putin is accusing the US of being involved in the conflict...hmm...

karen-phoenix   August 28th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

That was the McCain of 2000–Carl Rove will again take over tomorrow!!!!

Katrina   August 28th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

I've been wondering at those Dem stars calling McCain a personal friend, though a lethal enemy of the country's future - Hillary, Joe Biden, Bubba - seems they've actually shamed him into his first display of reciprocal decency.

Edward   August 28th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Actually, I think politicians don't take their dirty actions on campaigns personally. I think this is sincere, but also serves to put a thin coat of whitewash on a mud covered wall. It won't help him get any votes, but might help him stay on the right side of the new majority party... the Democratic Party.

jwr53   August 28th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

I applaud McCain for recognizing what a historic event this is, and saying so. Very gracious.

Cartman   August 28th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

McCain is a nice guy and that isn't going to change.

Lesley   August 28th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

So does this mean that McCain will vote for Obama? I hope so!

anonymouys   August 28th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

does this mean mccain giving up the rlection to obama we want you to give up now we are tired of hearing ads

Republicans Hate America   August 28th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

I cant wait to see McCain congratulating him Nov 4 when Obama wins by a landslide

Change Girl.......California   August 28th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Dont trust him! Something is funny about this tonight.........we shalll see

Moderate for O   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

I think he genuinely means that. Tomorrow I will look at him with the same contempt that I have the past couple months but for tonight I'll celebrate with him with respect. If only he were this fair all the time.

New Yorker   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

He's sincere, but to those who don't recognize the virtue it's "creepy".

Marc   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

He releases this and then on the web releases a mud slinging attack ad... how republican of him.

Philippe Binder   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Hypocrit.

Franky   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

"The only thing "Historic" about McCAIN is that he voted against the MLK Holiday,"

WOW!!!! That's deep!! And what day is today?? WOW!!!!!

AeroEngineer   August 28th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Good form.

anonymouys   August 28th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

no way no how no mccain

chel   August 28th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

is it just me –or does it feel kind of condescending? Like, "way to go, son!" lol I don't know....

Tim   August 28th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Hey that's cool. McCain's ads have been pretty negative – but I think this is important nonetheless. I'm still voting Obama – I don't think this is going to buy McCain any votes. But its a good thing.

JD   August 28th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

What a waste of money!

TheTruthHurts   August 28th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Even if it has negative ulterior motives, I'm glad he did it. It's a respectable thing to do. We should all pause from the bitterness and acrimony to celebrate the country if not Obama himself.

Gireesh Sadasivan   August 28th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Haha. I wonder how many people he's trying to trick with that fake ad. This is insincere sincerity at its finest, my friends.

Soldier 4 OBAMA   August 28th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

McCAIN SHOULD STAND BY HIS CHARACTER which he lacks... this is just rediculous. Today he posted a video with a $3.00 BILL mocking OBAMA, as he did with the Mount Rushmore and then the $1.00 Bill. The only thing "Historic" about McCAIN is that he voted against the MLK Holiday, wasn't there for Katrina, does not favor Affirmatiove actions, although 60% of whites benefits from AFC more so than even blacks, hispanics and other ethnics. John McCain is rediculous to say the least!

Shane   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

that is great to hear that. Kudos to mc cain

S.   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Very creepy

JfromNC   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

The ad doesn't ring true to me at all. If McCain were sincere he could have called Obama personally to congratulate him. In my opinion, this ad is just a political stunt to step on Obama's night. Does he think Obama is going to watch the ad?

Josh   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

I am a huge Obama supporter, but I have to say, this is the McCain I miss. Congrats to him for such a great ad. Still voting for Obama.

Dem   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Pandering... just like all the Hillary ad's he's been running. He doesn't care about women (look at his record), her supporters or their values, he just wants their votes and is taking them for fools. =(

Dems '08!

Peter   August 28th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Even though it's obviously a stunt, it's nice that he did it. Even stunts can help change the tone.

McCainosarus   August 28th, 2008 5:38 pm ET

nice try, but too late. this ain't fooling anyone.

Plugged-in   August 28th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

McCain wants to appear to be a nice person. But he's not one. A nice person would care about all Americans, not just the wealthy ones.

Texas trail puppy!   August 28th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Is he courting the AA's vote now how pathetic. It would have been better if he had maintained a low profile, Tonight was and is Obama's Night!!

king   August 28th, 2008 5:37 pm ET

The McCain campaign is good at what they do, the dirty tricks and cutter politics will continue, this is a great example of spin at its best, trying to get some attention away from the great speech that Obama will make to mark this historic event...shamefull

Allen In North Carolina   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

What!?!?!?...... Ole Johns not on the attt\ack?..... Somethings wrong..... I feel that treachery is afoot..........

Tex Ann   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

So does the fact that the acceptance speech is on the same date as Martin Luther King's famous speech mean that Obama thinks he's of the same caliber as Dr. King? I don't think so.

Chris   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I'm hopeful they used their own private funds for this. Using campaign contributions for this isn't appropriate.

How very bleak   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

He is a gentleman through and through... how sad that only he can look past politics to extend a virtual handshake for one evening... people joke about his age, perhaps we should envy that he grew up in a time good manners meant something...

Independent Thinker   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

So...here is the $64,000 question. Was McCain really heartfelt in his congratulations – or – was he pandering for votes by *acting* nice?

Given his negative ads against Obama, it's hard not to think the latter. But I won't 100% come out and say it.

What do you think?

RB   August 28th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I'm sure Barack will issue a similiar ad on McCain's acceptance night! What goes around comes around....regardless the reason behind it.

JoelWhy   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I think the purpose of this ad is to make McCain's African American supporters feel good about their decision. And, I'm pretty sure both of those supporters will very much appreciate it.

Julie   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Really? Hmmmm.....

Franky   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

You know, I like this. I thought it was gonna be some kind of joke or something but is good to know the GOP are congratulating. Plus, I also find it funny that is Senator McCain talking and not anybody else, that's pretty interesting. Let's face it, this is to show gratitude for the significance of this race and by the way, is a sign of respect. And by the way, who are the most picky voters in this election? You got it, Independents...Lou's peeps!!

But I have to admit, I think that's pretty funny. Tell the GOP I caught them!!

John   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Nice touch. I still don't like McCain but this is nice.

Shari D.   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Brilliant move! Go John!

Angel   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Nice move!

America   August 28th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

I knew John Mccain is agood person deep inside. He just was corrupted by Rove.

CE   August 28th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Very Presidential of McCain. The only thing historic about this nomination is that it signals the final straw in the destruction of the Democratic Party.

No Way, No McCain   August 28th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Why didn't he just call him and congratulate him personally? Is it because he is really just putting on a show for the people, trying to save face over the slew of negative ads that he has run thus far? Hmmmmm.

anonymouys   August 28th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

wow mccain this is the nicest thing you said to obama at the campain trail all year all youre doing is attacking him with attack ads

peter   August 28th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

his meds have kicked in .

Michael in Houston   August 28th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Give me a break, do you think people are buying this. McCain you a faker than Pamela Andersons br....let me keep it clean. You are still going to lose, your campaign could have saved it;s money.

Sick & Tired of Nobama   August 28th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

John McCain is a beautiful man with a good heart. No gimmicks... what you see is what you get and that is why I am voting for him.
Nobama, Noway, Not ever.

Ron   August 28th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Thank you, Senator McCain for observing this moment in history. We appreciate that have you taken the time to acknowledge an event that many thought would never happen in their lifetime. Tomorrow the gloves come off again but tonight the dream lives on for those that dared to believe.

anonymouys   August 28th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

cut that be right and now action

Rich in Seattle   August 28th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

So he's Flip Flopping on his attacks now! Wow, there isn't anything he won't change course on..... except Iraq that is.

Really?   August 28th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

I half expected McCain to just concede. But this really is a nice touch. It won't make me forget Paris Hilton, blaming Obama for high gas prices, and the other garbage he's aired to date. But this really is a nice touch.

USA in 08   August 28th, 2008 5:30 pm ET

He just can't stand that Obama gets all the attention.

He could wait until tomorrow to run this ad and gain some respect for a campaign that has fed lies and hate into Americans minds.

John B. From New Hampshire   August 28th, 2008 5:30 pm ET
