As an African American I've always been patriotic but now I understand the intense patriotism that whites feel about this country. Its the kind of patriotism and love of country you feel when you know your leadership reflects you, your family and your community. White people have felt this type of patriotism as a result of representative government for 232 years. It breeds confidence that you can make it if you try. With Obama, blacks have been able to enjoy this feeling for the last 6 months.

Now, I agree with those who will undoubtly respond that you can't put too much stock in the polls and that it's early, but this is encouraging.

Obama has had some difficulty communicating his message for two reasons; (1) the McCain camp and right wing-nut media has been pouring buckets of mud on him (most of it fabrication, exaggeration, and innuendo) keeping him on the defense and (2) Obama has real world solutions that reflect the complexity of the problems we face, not oversimplified solutions that won't solve problems but make great sound-bites like McCain's.

Last night, you heard the sharpening of the message into more punchy bits that can be more easily communicated. With a team of surrogates to support Obama – Biden, Clinton, Clinton, Kerry, Richardson, etc. they will be able to simultaneously get the message out while combating all the unethical and untrue smears coming from McCain and others. 10 weeks to victory – a great team, a multitude of donors, an army of volunteers! It appears many democrats are swooning with convention fever and feel this election is all wrapped up. Frankly, the convention has seemed like a precisely scripted reality TV show (wonder if the Chinese helped with the production). I am 80 years old. I am white. I have seen many many elections. I have never seen the word"comander in chief" used in any one of them. Why does a war lord become so important? I can see how this is a significant event in the eyes of Americans, especially on the 45th anniversary of the speech. However, let's not annoint BO the president just yet. I still don't know anything about this guy or his actually thoughts on POLICY. Yes, I think he's a great speaker/motivator, but that does me no good if your going to increase my taxes, call home our troops before it's time, or not even drill on our own soil.

Most of all he was not a politician but a real man who understood that through hard work you gain experience, with self sacrifice and example you can lead, when you show yourself to be a leader of a few, more will follow, when gain the followers, you speak your dream.

MLK was a leader and still is all these years after his death. Obama is not a leader and has a lot to learn.

Have you read Time's interview with McCain yet? One thing that comes through quite clearly is... McCain is ashamed of himself. That anger and defensiveness is how shame often manifests itself. He's ashamed of the nasty campaign he's running. I believe he actually wanted to run the clean campaign he initially talked about, but when he fell behind in the polls, he let his advisors take over the tone, and they made a liar of him. And now he's ashamed of himself for selling out his ideals and his honor. And, he should be.

It is becoming increasingly clear that many of these former PUMAS used Hillary Clinton to veil their unwillingness to support an African American for President. Now that they don't have her as a shield, they are using "experience" or that Barack has "bought and paid for" the support of the Clintons, or that he is only in this for himself.

As horrible as it would be, I would appreciate you people coming clean and just saying you are racist and won't vote for an African American...just like many did in the West Virginia primary...at least then you would get credit for honesty.

While Senator Obama's accomplishment is historical and I'm sure he would be very proud at this moment, Dr King would also notice that this is NOT the end of the struggle. There is still a lot of work to be done. No doubt things are way better than previously, but let's not be fooled into thinking it is where it needs to be.

There is still much work to be done in our OWN communities. In my view, there are still too many with the thinking that we are OWED something. The future is our young people. With them, you are starting to see more harmony between different people. I have a picture of my son (African American), my neighbor's kid (Hispanic) and their friend (his dad is African) all arm in arm. It is my favorite.

That is the dream that Dr King had. He would love to come down my street and see neighbor's of different races talking to each other, our kid's playing around with each other. It is a wonderful thing to see.

For all those crying in the closet about having a president who is different from those who came in the past, that is ok. You will not be needed to win this election. If the "poll of polls" were calling any of us 20-30 year olds who don't have land lines and rely on blackberries and cell phones, the spread would be double digits. We are a new generation ready to overcome your instilled prejudices. This post-American world has left you behind, and we are ready to embrace a time when America cooperates with others instead of dominates them. We are ready to get our respect back around the world, and you can't stop us. Keep your photo albums of your typical, white, anglo-saxon protestant presidents, because you won't see another for quite some time.

I was excited about Obama giving his speech at Invesco Field when it was announced, however I think this is a mistake. It is way over the top. I don't think he will win over the voters he need to just because 50k more people will be in attendance during his speech.

Millions of square miles of territory. I listened to Bill's speach last night and I thought he did a great job, BUT this is something that stuck with me. He said – remember what happened when we had republicans controlling all three branches of government. It really didn't work out. Unlike him I believe that they were well intentioned and thought that unhindered they could change the world for the better. Fact is they didn't. BUT the reason is simple- NO BALANCE. They were in control of house, senate and white house, all three. You can't make good decisions when there is no balancing opposing view that you need to reconcile with. SO... This is going to be BAD! The democrats are just as well intentioned but if they hold all three parts (house, senate and white house) they will fail just as miserably and we will suffer even more for it. People, we need balance and comprimise in government. So you really think a far left president, a far left majority leader in the senate and Nancy Pelosi can unite the country (All of the country!) or just swing the pendulum all the way back in the other direction as payback to Bush. WE NEED THE SENATE AND HOUSE TO BE CONTROLLED BY DIFFERENT PARTIES AND A CENTRIST PRESIDENT FOR REAL PROGRESS FOR EVERYONE. Think about it.

MLK was an inspiration not only because of his words but his actions. Bush/Cheney made terrible decisions but we do not reside in a dictatorship. August 28 is such a special day– Hearing Barack Obama talking about the values and aspirations that were inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King will be absolutely awesome. Not only did King talk about race but also about war. We need a person who has the temperament who can find common ground to encourage respect for each other in the United States and abroad. Obama is the man!

As I watched Hillary give the nomination to Barack, I felt so very proud of our country at that moment. It seems we are finally using our brains to nominate a president instead of being fed ideas we are told to believe. Barack has never run this race based on race and we will vote for him "based on the content of his character, not the color of his skin".

Interesting tidbit: CNN's ticker story "McCain has decided on VP" had 113 comments last night, the vast majority of which derogatory. This morning, it's still there. With 3 comments.... very odd...

On another note: The carping about the final night in the stadium… I’ve seen electioneering in a fair amount of countries and politicians everywhere do their best to attract the largest crowd they can. It often reflects the enthusiasm of the party’s supporters and the temperature of the elections.

I can't wait to watch John McCain and George Bush stumble and fumble next week trying to read that teleprompter in front of a large crowd. Jay Leno and others are going to have a field day with the bloopers.

Please consider taking David Gergen off the air. Not only does he look like a hound dog, but he has been so negative re: the Democratic National Convention. Is he so partisan that he can't give any credit to the Democrats? His commentary was like a bitter pill swallowed after a delicious meal. When I tune in to the convention, I want to hear the speakers, not the pundits talking over the speakers. I think the coverage has been really unprofessional. It will be interesting to see how the Republicans are covered. I'm sorry to say, but I'm going to be tuning in more to PBS, and less to CNN.

I applaud Mr Obama for this history making event. He still will not get my vote.

This is going to be awesome. I think voters are finally starting to realize that John McCain is the empty suit here. That he is playing the same games played in '00 and '04 and I think it's finally stopped working. Barack & Co will take this all the way to the White House and I can't wait to see it all.

Democrats got screwed in '00 and we've spent the last 7.5 years being trampled on. This mistake has finally come to an end and we will prevail (as we did in the first place in 2000). This is OUR time. We've watched in horror what GWB did to this country. It's finally time for the nightmare to be over. Thank God.

McCain's VP pick will not help him at this point. ALL of his choices have severe drawbacks that some part of his base will reject. Also, a convention with a line up full of losers will not give him any momentum. Who really cares about seeing Cheney, Bush, Lieberman and Guliiani speak for this guy? I think this is wonderful. I was in tears yesterday as I watched Obama become the nominee for the Democratic party. This moment is real. It's time for a change. And for people like Jeff, who commented above that Obama is a King wanna-be, well all I have to say to that is, what a wonderful person to want to be like. Dr. King was an inspiration to all Americans. If all of us were just 1/2 the person Dr. King was this country would be a different place and we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now.

I am a lifelong republican as my parents were before me. They were blue collar workers who both died in their 80's as devout christians. I cannot wait to cast my vote for this brilliant peacemaker who has shown sound judgement, a caring for ordinary americans and a foresight that we have not seen in a long while. He's also shown me he has some balls too. Besides my parents, life long democrats would be disgusted if i dared consider voting for the warmonger, for the rich only candidate john mccain.

Obama is a King wannabe, the biggest problem with that is that Dr. King actually had a purpose besides feeding his ego. Obama is a con-man running on nothing besides rhetoric and arrogance and is basically the G.W. Bush of the Democratic Party. In other words, McCain is seeking to cut off the kind of universal health care that the government has guaranteed to veterans for generations.

"We need to relieve the burden on the VA from routine health care," McCain told the National Forum on Disability Issues last month. "If you have a routine health care need, take it wherever you want, whatever doctor or health care provider, and get the treatment you need, while we at the VA focus our attention, our care, our love, on these grievous wounds of war."
