Barney Smith got the Invesco crowd to its feet.
Barney Smith got the Invesco crowd to its feet.

While TV cameras weren't watching, "ordinary guy" Barney Smith — part of the convention's "American Voices" segment — brought mile-high stadium to its feet.

He told his story of losing the Indiana factory job he'd held for 30 years and then said America needed a president who paid more attention to "Barney Smith" not "Smith Barney."

The crowd leapt to its feet chanting "Barney, Barney!"

Great cap to a great convention.

Anyone rejecting the message rejects himself.

Obama's campaign is made by and for regular Barneys.

You too can own part of the dream.

Don't prop up those that could care less about you.

McCain's beneficiaries are those corporate entities with their own social security numbers who pay less in taxes than we do…

Change is real.

Very Sure Obama will be the President of the United States of America.
God Bless the USA.

I saw Barney and loved it. PBS coverage was more balanced and showed more. Too much hot air on CNN. I attended a picnic this past weekend where the DJ / brother of the hostess characterized the real ticket as not Obama and Biden but Sambo and Rambo…. that's the sentiment among too many whites who fear change. No amount of truth is going to change those small minds. people who care better vote for Obama… people of color better register and vote for Obama We cannot afford more bloody reactionary government that cares nothing for human rights..

Nancy P.   August 28th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

CNN may not have gotten Barney Smith's comments but PBS did!

CNN dropped the ball   August 28th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

I saw it on PBS. Too bad you all missed it. CNN is worthless.

Karen - Canada   August 28th, 2008 11:54 pm ET

Sen. Obama could turn white overnight and he still couldn't please everyone. In all fairness, give credit where it is due without resorting to nasty insinuations. I am soooooooo tired of all that hatred that is spewed by some Republicans who would argue that black is white or white is black because of their narrow mindedness. Ignorance surely must be bliss.

Not asleep at the Switch   August 28th, 2008 11:52 pm ET

Barack Obama for the President of USA

Ohio Buckeye   August 28th, 2008 11:51 pm ET

They will say anything to get into office. Just remember my fellow Americans, the only time a politician is telling the truth is when he's calling his opponent a liar. And that goes for both sides. "Buckeye" keeping it simple.

steve dumford, Scotts valley ca.   August 28th, 2008 11:45 pm ET

I'm a liberal independent. Obamas speech was nothing special. Hillarys was oh so much better as was Bill Clintons. Liked the part where he talked about his upbringing and said that wasn't the upbringing of a celebrity, meanwhile the set and the venue SCREAMED "Celebrity." People vote for people they can relate to. Who out there in most of America can relate to this? BIG mistake to put him in a setting that says "Idol" all the way. The set way overshadowed the words. People want a person for President who is like them. Obama is not that person. I also liked the part where he said he'd debate with McCain anytime and yet he's refused all debates with McCain except the ones where he feels safest. Same as he did with Hillary. I know he can't help it, but this mans face looks haughty which makes him look arrogant and then he puts that in this setting. Pardon me but I think that is plain stupid. When all the hot air settles down reality will settle in. The fact is that no President gets what he wants. Congress has to agree and , sorry folks, but nothing much is gonna change. These ar politicians and they're full of hot air and not much else.

Last Honest Man   August 28th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

Yep, I watched PBS and caught the whole thing. Gotta love PBS, excellent commentary and you see everything! Way better then listening to newcasters interupt and overide speeches that need to be heard.

BK   August 28th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

Alll right CNN you and every one else heard it. This is the 2nd time he has said he wanted to debate. Hold his feet to the fire. When McCain takes him up on it. He has hide from ever town hall meeting. Do your job CNN. He only stays on script and we are getting a little tired of his lies. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

McCain is the candidate of authentic change we can really believe in! He has worked across the aisle and fought for issues that were not popular with his party or president but were good for the American people!

That was the John McCain of 2000 that John McCain would not vote for the John McCain of 2008. Dick Cheney, George Bush, Joe Lieberman, and Rudy Giuliani theses are some of folks that will speak at theGOP convention next week "Change" I think not.

McSame   August 28th, 2008 11:41 pm ET

It's amazing how all these republicans can show up on these forums without stating any of McCain's Policies.Unless all you people are part of that top 5% Obama will raise taxes for, why are complaining? This country is in such a mess how can you possibly vote for someone who voted with Bush 90% percent of the time. Oh Yeah, Bush has an approval rating under 30%..seems like a great choice to me…

WOAH   August 28th, 2008 11:39 pm ET

What's wrong with us?   August 28th, 2008 11:39 pm ET

We need a president who will tell Americans to get off their fat, lazy butts and work harder and smarter. Granted, things are tough for my family as well, and I probably have as good a story to tell as the next person, but as I gripe about how things are going I am also working to better myself and make it happen for myself and my family - and not wait for either presidential candidate to give me a handout.

I don't think either candidate will change anything for my family. I'll bet I can (continue to) change my own station before anybody in the government changes things for me. Why should I sit around an moan? I'll make it happen myself.

Yeah, I work two jobs, have a family, and have gone back to school full time (at 49 years old). I'll cast my vote for the candidate I feel will best serves this country's needs (not just my own), but I consider myself fortunate to have the drive, desire and support of my family to accomplish what is best for us. It sure beats laying around eating junk food while watching mindless shows on TV.

Mike Smith and Sally Sue (MSSS)   August 28th, 2008 11:37 pm ET

President Obama drew a crowd at Invesco Field LARGER than what the Denver Broncos could draw. If the stadium was larger, maybe more Americans could be allowed to attend and enjoy the global celebration. Even if the continental U.S. was one big giant stadium, you still wouldn't be able to hold all of the world's OBAMA supporters. This Presidential campaign is HUGE.

CNN commentators are haters.

I have never been so moved by a candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Full of hope, vision and full of solutions that are pragmatic and address their challenges that are before us as individuals and as a nation! Tonight I felt and feel once again honored to be an American. I could not help but in some ways see all that have gone before him over the history of our nation and how they, I am sure were celebrating with us as we saw Mr. Obama accept the nomination of President of the United States.

I was a boy when John Kennedy was President and it has not been since then that I have felt and we have felt so much hope…..so much life!

God bless Mr. Obama, his family and those with him; protect him and keep him and May God Bless America!

TV Cameras *WERE* watching.

On C-SPAN. They even had internet streams.

Don't watch important campaign events on cable news or network news. The networks bloviate nonsense, and show you what they think you need to hear. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, they don't give you the full picture, they give you an edited version that fits their preconceptions and biases.

Watch on C-SPAN.

Shame on you!! You aren't pro-choice? Shame on you!!! Dems speak not just for the people that are pro-life but the ones that are pro-choice. I an a 61 yr. old registered Independent, Vietnam veteran that backed Hillary Clinton in the primary.
I beleve in Mr. Obama and feel he cleared up a lot of the doubts I have had.
I was 13 years old when John F. Kennedy visited East Los Angeles College Football Stadium , in California during a political stop for his presidential campaign.
The Stadium was standing room only (26,000+) with ordinary mostly Latino citizens trying to get a glimps of the future Peesident of the United States. I was one of those people. I walked 2 miles to the stadium because my family didn't own a car.
Oh yeah there were celebraties, Frank Sanatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Donna Reed and more.
Tonight resembled that evening and I just wish I could have been there.
Tonight I signed up to support Mr. Obama to get them into the White House.

All right, listen up GOP!! I'm gonna reavel you some numbers and guess what? This only takes ONE day and since you're having a good mood, why not now…

I'm sorry but do you wanna know some numbers of Senator McCain?? I will give you ONE, just one and by the way, take the advice…

The numbers for McCain health is…….(get ready)…….69.6% What does that mean, you say? Well, it means the status of Senator McCain's health. How do we know?? Trust me, we just know. So, here's my advice to you….

Don't talk to the media, ignore the protests, don't listen to the Dems, don't have any gaffes, and most importantly, make sure no pressure is on him. Why?? Because this I can GUARANTEE YOU, all it will take is one day, one day and his candidacy will be finished….

And by the way, you got 2 months left to see if he doesn't get ill……

I know you don't wann hear that and that's right take that advice. Because all it takes is one day and one day only and he will be finished….

Will there be complaints about the color of his hair ?
Will people say his speech lacked substance while others complain its boring because it has to much ? Is this what this election is really about…… haven't anyone ever watched a convention before ???

I have to say this, I AM a Republican…and I AM disgusted with all this negative commenting on here. This is AMERICA..If you aren't from this country then just quite you trap and stop instigating and if you are from America..you better look at your family real hard, call the cousin, your aunts, uncles, and other relatives, even your neighbors and get their stories. Not everyone is still well in this country and whether you believe in a God or not you are of the human race and are your brother's keeper….open your mind to realize this is a once in your lifetime opportunity to make this right in humanity. Obama is right, too much fear prevents people from moving forward. Confront your fears and you'll be amazed what a great world you can have!

GOP wants to run a big election about little things. Instead of talking about the economy, the war, health care, housing, oil etc. they are piddling on about the columns behind the DNC stage this evening.

I watched Barney Smith on PBS this evening. That's what this election is about. Not stage props. GOP have no record, no ideas, nothing to offer - so they attack the player instead of the ball.

That same son watched Mr Obama's speech wth me tonight and made the statement, "This country needs him, only everyone hasn't realized it yet. He can save this country." That son s only 18 years old as of 5 Aug 08. One of his first acts as a legal adult will be to vote for Barak Obama for President of the United States of America. I think "aware" missed his or her dose of meds since clearly they're not "aware" of the fact that Obama is going to crush John McSame's tired rear end come November.

This isn't about Democrats or RepubliCONs, it's about a strong leader who has the intelligence to control the hot-headed rhetoric and bully tactics that Bush and Bush-lite (John "I need a Cane" McCain) so love to tout.

Barack Obama is the guy that is going to cut through the political B.S. and start to get this country back on track.

michael, Gladstone, MO   August 28th, 2008 11:15 pm ET

You're smiley seems to be an empty suit - all rhetoric, and no proof.

Texas Straight Talker   August 28th, 2008 11:15 pm ET

OBAMA/BIDEN/USA ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

S Callahan   August 28th, 2008 11:15 pm ET

I never saw it coming…..Barney had the best line of the night….
America DOES need to care more for the Barney Smith's in our country and not Smith Barney (referring to corporate world)!!!

Bob H   August 28th, 2008 11:14 pm ET

I was watching Obama's speach the other day and turned to my wife and said "he reminds me of Hitler in Nurnberg. Two days later my brother called and when I asked him of his impression of Obama and he said "he reminds me of Hitler" I sure as hech hope he's not!

Hmmm…..Barney doesn't look like he's been missing any meals since he lost that job.

Obama/Biden Change WE Can Believe IN   August 28th, 2008 11:13 pm ET

Barney Smith should RUN Smith Barney…

Katrina   August 28th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

Um, chitowngal07, senators are elected for six years, not four. But ignorance about the most basic structures of the government of your country should not, of course, keep you from feeling you have something to contribute.

Barney Fan   August 28th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

I saw Barney's presentation in full… because I was watching MSNBC!!!! :-)

Scott L   August 28th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

Barney has to realize the Bill Clinton signed NAFTA into law…come'on now people….DEMOCRATS SIGNED NAFTA INTO LAW!!!! Do you even understand what your party stands for??? Doesn't sound like it at all…

John Chisholm   August 28th, 2008 11:12 pm ET

Two terms of George Bush has brought America to its knees, financially and politically. Never before has America been in such a mess, since the civil war, thanks to 8 years of a republican government. I felt for sure during the last federal election, the majority of americans would wake up and realize that another term of republican policy would be a disaster in waiting and elect a the democrats. History proved me right.

To All Americans   August 28th, 2008 11:09 pm ET

So things are bad for you? Thats tough, suck it up, the economy will turn, so relax and wait for the market to fix itself.

Sven   August 28th, 2008 11:09 pm ET

I won't watch any of the cable news shows any longer. I do not need CNN's talking heads telling me what to think, constantly interrupting rather than covering the news. KPBS covered the whole event without distracting split screens, tickers, or interruptions. And it's TV cameras showed Barney Smith.

Josh   August 28th, 2008 11:08 pm ET

BARNEY, BARNEY!!!!

aware   August 28th, 2008 11:07 pm ET

McCain is the candidate of authentic change we can really believe in! He has worked across the aisle and fought for issues that were not popular with his party or president but were good for the American people! :)

Obama is the candidate of Chicago patronage politics! He obfuscates, prevaricates and equivocates with a spirit of hubris, arrogance and narcissism that is beyond belief! :(

Obama is Bush 2 Ultra! He wants to be "the decider" who will push his elitist far left-wing ideology on a moderate American people!

"No way, no how, no chance, no" Obama! :)

Boston For OBAMA   August 28th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Where else but in America could you tell your story Barney Smith. Vote for change.

Nancy   August 28th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Well, actually, some of the cameras were watching - just not CNN's. What a disappointment your coverage has been. I saw the first night of the convention that CNN was more interested in hearing themselves than the speakers, so switched to Cspan. And yes, Barney was amazing! Too bad you missed it. You really dropped the ball.

jeremi   August 28th, 2008 11:04 pm ET

someone get it on youtube already!

No Way, No How, No George McCain!   August 28th, 2008 11:03 pm ET

McShame voted with Bush 90% of the time.

AMERICANS need to start demanding better quality automobiles made in America, and we need to start buying them. But hey, I'd rather have my Toyota made in California than a Ford made in Mexico!

Independant Thinker   August 28th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Was this some of the REAL people that the democrats were going to show.

Too bad more democrats aren't REAL people.

Maybe they'd get it. The democrats are part of the problem.

Steven   August 28th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Barney lost his job because of the NAFTA and the NAALC.

He should talk to George Bush senior for working with Canada and Mexico to draft the idea. Furthermore, he should thank Bill Clinton for putting it into action.

Are you sure you want to vote for a 'lesser of evil'?

gail   August 28th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

hey did you forget it it was the democrates that sent our jobs across the world and made them richer

Nannie Turner   August 28th, 2008 10:57 pm ET

President Bush did not do all this damage to our country all by himself.Joe Biden,John Kerry,Harry Ried'Obama and all of these clowns have been right there in congress and they failed to do the job they were elected to do.They are as much to blame as bush.

OhioMOM   August 28th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

Ooooooooooh all the angry Repug's are on here tonight.

Rush, is that you?

Douglas Democrat   August 28th, 2008 10:55 pm ET

"And he expects a ex-senator who sat on his butt thru the state senate and only voted present, who has sat thru the US senate and not even voted, do anything to get his job back"

Yeah, and what is McCain gonna do? He's gonna give ANOTHER tax cut to the guys who OWNED the factory! And hope that maybe they'll use it to reopen that factory instead of pocketing it.

Keep dreaming…McCain has been absent more than Obama, and in 26 years of Senate service McCain's actual accomplishments are pretty thin, when he's not actively denouncing them.

David W.   August 28th, 2008 10:52 pm ET

Who is this man blaming for losing his job? Shut up and go find another one, like I did. Maybe it was his fault to begin with.

Max   August 28th, 2008 10:48 pm ET

That's a really clever line.

JOE INDEPENDENT   August 28th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

If Obama or Mccain loses this election they and their family will profit from the senate for the rest of his life. So why are all you people getting so excited about this? It's politics at its best.

I would just like to see history made which is all it is - vote Obama!

karen   August 28th, 2008 10:47 pm ET

If he is his brother's keeper, why is his brother living in a shack in Kenya on less than $1 a month? Somehow, I feel he would have benefited from leaving that remark out. We've all seen the video.

WISH I could believe like the sheeple in the stadium. I would love to say I believe in Obama and see a black person (female would make me even happier) become president but something just doesn't ring true. Then again, I don't like McCain either.

LT for Obama   August 28th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Now I have cried twice. The first time watching Barney on C-Span and then again here and glad that CNN actually reported this momentous time for the ordinary man.

Dan   August 28th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

For all those people who want to retreat to the "good ole days" of the past, go bury your heads in the sand, and let the youth of the future make sure you get your social security - even if you cower in challenging times.

maynard hopkins wi   August 28th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

IT APPEARS AS THOU HE HAS BANDAGES FOR ALL THE PROBLEMS AND NO REAL SOLUTIONS… TAKE THE OIL PROBLEM…. WE HAVE ENOUGH OIL IN THE WELLS THAT ARE CAPPED BY THE USA. WE NEED MORE REFINERIES. BUT THIS MAKES TO MUCH SENSE. AND I,M NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

AL GORE SHOULD BE REAL PROUD FOR HE IS THE ONE THAT WANTS GAS TO GO TO $5:00 PER GAL ISN'T IT FUNNY HOW HE WANTS THE GREEN EFFECT AND WANTS GAS TO BE SOLD FOR $5:00 PER GAL GO FIGURE

You can know a person my the word the speak. McCain speaks negativity while Obama speaks the positive. McCain attacks while Obama uplifts.

pete   August 28th, 2008 10:35 pm ET

Barney I feel your pain and I pray that the Change will come that we need.

Craig   August 28th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

The TV cameras were watching - it was shown on PBS.

Marge Hibbing Mn   August 28th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

And he expects a ex-senator who sat on his butt thru the state senate and only voted present, who has sat thru the US senate and not even voted, do anything to get his job back…bull and the dumb bunnies who kiss obama butt are eating it up.

Toot   August 28th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

As a Hillary supporter and love the heck out of Bill Clinton I want to go back to the good ole days of having a job, cheap gas, food that I can afford and a least having 2 dollars in the bank to treat my children to a Happy Meal.
I cannot see another 4 years of GB. I need a change and I need it now. On verge of losing everything I have worked for.
If my darling Bill can support Obama I guess I have to be one of those 18 million that will narrow the gap to stand at 17999 million now.
Obama you owe us this change that you have talked about and got the DNC to bend over backwards for you!!

nic   August 28th, 2008 10:30 pm ET

Just because CNN isn't showing it during their coverage doesn't mean the cameras aren't watching it…

Obama/Biden '08

Lim   August 28th, 2008 10:25 pm ET

Obama is full of hot air. That is why he started running for
the POTUS two years into his first 6-year term in the Senate.
If he had waited longer, say 2012 or 2016, people will have
realized that he really would not accomplish anything of
substance. Just ask the people from Illinois about Obama
record!

Scott Winter   August 28th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

That's funny. I saw it. I saw it all on PBS. It was brilliant. It's a shame you people missed it.

chitowngal07   August 28th, 2008 10:14 pm ET
