A woman with no national experience, mayor of a small town until two years ago, now chosen to be the next president, if McCain (who would be 80 years old at the end of a second term) is elected and cannot serve out his tenure? On paper, it seems absurd, but the choice was not intended to appeal to the rational side of voters, but rather to the disaffection of some Hillary supporters whose latest hopes were frustrated by Obama's choice of Biden for a running mate.

How successful will it be is hard to predict, but it probably has as many downsides as advantages. An important question will be how the Democrats respond. If wise, they would seek a prominent response from Hillary Clinton, pointing out that Palin opposes everything Hillary stands for, including abortion rights and environmental preservation. Ultimately, as many have pointed out, but as is typically forgotten in the light of daily events, it will be Obama vs McCain, and not Biden or anyone else vs Palin.

Living in California my whole life, I have the utmost regard for Barbara Boxer, BUT, I think she is wrong on this one. I think Palin is an excellent choice and a move by John McCain to pull in the half of our Party, the Democratic Party, that feels so disenfranchised by Barack Obama and the DNC. McCain is proving already that he is willing to reach across the aisle and invite us in. I, for one, appreciate that very much. It is much more than so many millions of us got from our own Party!

And, where would Obama's experience in any of those be? NONE at all. Living from 2-7 years old in another country does not count as infternational affairs, and neither does his rock concert speech in Berlin. Economy - never even held a real job. Government and public interested paid for by the government do not count. Heathcare - being a marxist i guess is a stance, but not actual experience.

Palin at least managed a town as mayor, and a state as governor.

First he uses Hillary Clinton in his adds, now he's trying to appeal to feminist voters who are still unsure about Obama. I hope the American people wise up to his foolish antics...

I am a Clinton supporter who is voting for McCain and I think McCain made a good decision. Senator Boxer shouldn't presume to speak for the rest of us. She may do exactly what the party says to do but the rest of make up our own minds. Obama is a danger to our country, his views are too liberal, even for a lifelong Democrat like myself. Palin keeps her word and will fight bid oil, not only that but she has a history of winning.

Hillary supporters love her not just because shes a woman but because she a woman with the experience to lead our country. Palin's lack of experience on the national stage will be the republicans downfall for this upcoming election. Mccain's bad choice has in my belief sealed his defeat come Nov. The Obama/Biden ticket is a much more healthier selection for our country.

DEMOCRATS ÅRE SEXIST!!!!!! There I've said it. Listen to all you hypocrites! Obama was still bumming around Chicago as a Community activitst - whatever the hell that means when she was elected Mayor (by the way a position where you don't get to vote present!) having already served 6 years in elected office. She went on to CLEAN up Alaska's political scene on the Ethics Committee (even going as far as to run a fellow Republican out of office) Now as Governor she's shown that she cares about balancing a budget and government ethics. You want to talk about foreign policy experience!!! Seriously!!! With Obama as your candidate! Why don't you follow CNN John Roberts example and point out that with a baby with Down's she is awfully busy to be VP -

I think its a good time for the dems to hit back with the age and health issues of McCain. Considering if something shall happen to him cause he is so old. That will make Palin president. Do you think she is ready?
She is a governor who hasnt finished her first term. And come on Alaska.....LOL. an economy of nothing. He had better choices. Do you think she is ready?

McCain just won over this life-long Democrat and former Clinton supporter.

When Obama chose as his VP a 65 year old man who couldn't win 10,000 votes over a woman who won 18 million, he lost the last shreds of his credibility and lost the support of any self-respecting woman. Enough!

The Democrats TALK about change and equality but they just can't DO it. Obama is no exception. Women are supposed to be pleased with the pro-choice stand and then let the Democrats walk all over them. NO MORE.

Can't wait to vote for McCain-Palin! while waiting for sme future Democratic party to wake up and notice that 50% of the people on this earh are WOMEN.

Lets face it she is no Hillary Clinton. The only reason he picked her is to have one up (so to speak) on the Democratic campaign. I am so tired of hearing about how BIDEN needs to or should take it easy on her because she is a woman. I am a black woman and a professional woman and I am still undecided. It is very sad that the country is left to pick between the first black candidate and a candidate that picked a woman on the ticket. It looks to me that they (Republicans) are picking someone just to win the race to the white house and are not focusing on the issues and the concerns that this country has. To the Hillary Clinton supporters, it is also sad that they would take a chance and vote the other way just because she did not win This popularity contest is taking away from the real issues.

I have to say that for the first time in a long time, I may not vote at all.

We are back to big politics about small things which is what the republican party is all about. It will be a pity if Americans get sucked in by such small mindedness. I think we should be insulted by this move and disappointed by how desperate Mccain is to win this election without having regard for the well being of this nation.

Americans think:
about the issues
about what is wrong with this nation; affordable healthcare, job loss, credit crunch etc.

Don't let Karl rove and his buddies play games with your lives.

Dingle 225 said "A hail mary is used in desperation in foot ball when you are loosing and not expected to win.
McCain and Obama are in a close race and neither is winning or loosing right now."
----------

Obama 49% MaGoo 41% as of this morning from Gallup. So yes, Obama is winning. NAtional polls mean nothing you say? MOre proof? Look at the electoral map in the state by state polls.
MaGoo IS losing
Obama has a lock on almost 260 electoral votes now. 1 or 2 toss ups states and its an Obama's presidency

As a female Canadian, watching from the outside, looking in on this years Presidential race, I was extremely disappointed that Hilary Clinton was not chosen to lead the Democrats, and disappointed again when she was not picked for VP.
I hear the word 'change' being used often, but I see and hear no change in the Democratic Party. It is still a man, no matter what color, saying "there, there Dear".
If I had a vote, it would be for McCain. He at least had the 'you know what', to pick a woman for his VP. And whether you like it or not, this years election will be all about 'race' and 'gender'.

Well, well..If you voted for Hillary just because she was a woman, here you go. I voted for Hillary because she was the best, not because she was a woman. I will need to learn more about Sarah before I decide to vote for McCain, or stick with my write in for Hillary. Obama is too much Pomp and Circumstance, all that glitters is not gold. At least an inexperienced person will be a heartbeat away and not the nominee.

So the dems want someone new or they don't???
They want a D.C. insider or they don't???
They want a younger person on a ticket or they don't????
They want a woman (Palin isn't a Hillary but NO ONE IS but HILLARY) or they don't want a woman on a ticket????
They want CHANGE or they don't want CHANGE????? (a republican VP as a woman is change for certain)

Sounds like no matter what McCain does they are against it.

More hate and bias getting in the way.

Vote or don't vote for McCain
Vote or don't vote for Obama

Think more..... its a good thing (as Martha would say)

Do I smell a little fear in the Obama camp?

I think Senator McCain's choice is inspired! If you think about it -- she could almost be a female version of Obama's call for "change" "new leadership" "outside of Washington." Why are Obama supporters getting so upset? If Obama/Biden prove better than McCain/Palin -- they will win.

By the way Senator Boxer. You don't speak for me! I am a former Hillary supporter and I will be taking a close look at Governor Palin before I make up my mind. It's called being responsible. How did it become a negative for Americans to vote for the best candidate and not just for their party?

Um.. What happened to focusing on the issues.???

Candidate McCain is losing it and Senator McCain is a ghost.
McCain continues to wish for his past celebrity, but seems to be losing his mind rather quickly.

Palin is no Hilary Clinton and America will not confuse gender with the important issues of the economy, international experience, and the right to choose.

In fact Palin's greatest sucess other than her whistleblowing on her republican counterparts, was raising taxes in her town to help the debt.
"Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil, and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

It was so clear he ONLY choose her to get hillary supporters. What is even worse that she's an oil person. She wants to drill everywhere in Alaska. Combine McCain with his drill and her, alaska is going to end up our backyard for oil. What is says we will never get away from our oil addiction. You McCain talks about getting away from oil addiction, but at the same time, painting a bad picture with this Alaska VP choice. It is clearly he is only after getting votes... While Biden, was not about votes, it seems obama is the wise guy today, not McCain. Obama chose biden to strengthen the team, not to get votes. He would have picked hillary to get votes.

She will get this PUMA'S VOTE, that old boy network at the DNC could have won this one hands down, but they just couldn't get past their sexist, macho egos.Gloria Borgia actually said this morning, that a woman would have a harder time being an attack dog--WHAT-?????here comes the media sexism and gender bias, raising it's ugly head again.
By the way all you anti-war Obama supporters --did you hear Obama's speech last night--he isn't anti-war--he just wants to move it to Afganistan. The Soviets fought there for 20 years, crippling their economy--THAT is what you are looking at with Obama.

Palin has more executive experience than Obama. She practices what she preaches. And she is more of an agent for change, by virtue of her taking on powerful interests in Alaska (and winning) than the inspirational speaker who sloganeers but in the end just dances around the tough issues (When does life begin? Obama says that question is beyond his 'pay grade').

I think McCain did well here.

Hmmm. I wonder how many of the so-called "experts" commenting on this and other blogs on the wisdom (or lack thereof) of John McCain choosing Sarah Palin for his Vice President candidate could have picked her out of a lineup 24 hours ago.

She is the governor of a small state whose budget is funded by revenues from the royalties from the pipeline. There is no state income tax and no state sales tax. She hasn't had to fight for tax cuts or budget proposals. Everyone in the state gets a dividend.

She has managed a fully funded state. Her only job so far has been to cut costs.

It is solidly a Republican state. She may be a reformer, but she is a Republican reformer who got elected to clean up a Republican scandal. Not to mention that 2 of 3 Republican congressmen are under indictment as well. The thrid is the daughter of the old governor who was appointed by her father and he was defeated in the primary. Clean up your own house before you throw mud.

her husband works for BP…big oil just like the lobbyist running McCain's campaign. she IS under investigation…just like Alaska's Stevens…
can we see this VP candidate sitting across the table as the POTUS talking to our enemies? i don't think so….
John McCain shows yet again his poor judgment and that he just does NOT get it. John McCain this decision is not about political expediency…you have insulted every woman and every American by picking Palin…just any woman wont do…hell you would have done better with Rice….i guess the BRILLIANT speeches Obama, the Clinton's, Gore, Kerry and the rest gave at the DNC convention got your good choices running scared…Palin must have been your last most desperate choice…pandering to women, no John you just insulted them.
oh yeah John just cause you put a woman on your ticket...does not erase the years you voted against equal pay....thought i would let you know

"Boxer pointed to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as Senator Olympia Snowe as more fitting choices if McCain was interested in putting a woman on his ticket"

Doesn't that statement make the case that Palin wasn't put on the ticket just because she is a woman? She has experience leading and will be a breath of fresh air in Washington. Great pick McCain!!

Guess what Boxer! I was a Hillary supporter, and I am voting for McCain/Palin. Palin has lots of executive experience, while Obama does not. Palin has accomplished lots of things, while Obama only "talks" about them.

Go Palin!

...great move by Senator McCain today, he made tremendous history (herstory). Gov. Palin is well liked and respected by the great people of Alaska, one of the toughest States in the Union. She deals well with the issues of environment, energy, business, wildlife conservation, indigeneous people and their cultures, transportation, finance, etc. - you name it, Alaska deals with it. Doing all this as a increasingly popular Governor, as Alaskans get to-know-her.

This is a victory for the women of the world really, as woman-kind takes a giant step forward. Gov Palin will be an inspiration to women worldwide in political struggles, and inequalities of life.

Shows great humility & foresight by McCain. A great day for America!

Senator Boxer has a point. He could have picked a far more qualified woman running mate from the Republican party. I won't pretend otherwise, I made my decision to vote for Senator Obama long ago. However, had I been undecided, the selection of Vice Presidential candidates would have sealed it. Senator Obama has a colorable argument to claim he picked the person best suited for the job. Senator McCain cannot. If you think Senator Obama is unqualified, and that scares you, then you should be terrified by the potential of Senator Palin in the Oval Office should something happen to Senator McCain (god forbid).
