Bush will deliver his speech Monday at the RNC in St. Paul.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Bush's final GOP convention speech as head of the Republican party will express "gratitude" to his supporters rather than attack Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Friday.

The president is due to deliver his speech Monday at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. Perino said it will review "the major issues facing the country, from terrorism and war to the economy and the direction of our culture."

Perino added that in making the case for GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain's qualifications, the speech will reflect "on the role of the presidency and the qualities that are demanded by the job" of commander-in-chief.

"In particular, it highlights McCain's unique judgment, perspective and experience to deal with the unexpected, to stand firm on his convictions, put the country above himself and make hard decisions necessary to protect the American people," Perino said.

Despite less than five months left in President Bush's term, Perino said not to expect the speech to define his legacy.

"This is not an opportunity to recap accomplishments of the past seven and a half years," she said. "It will not serve as a farewell to the American people, and it certainly will not attack Barack Obama."

Asked why, Perino replied, "Because he's got class."

She added, "This president knows better than almost any politician in America what it's like to face criticism. He watched his dad as vice presidential candidate for two terms go through that, and then when his dad ran for president, he saw it again, and then in his own campaigns, the two national
elections. He knows what it's like in high political season, and he's not going to respond to every attack."

If you guys think for one second with Obama's plan's on Incomes over 200,000 at any company. Isn't going to cause Payroll problems with your jobs/ or you company's Tax position. Since most of you don't mind. Blog–Tell us who you are and tell your company at your level. Then cutbacks and layoffs begin. They can choose you first to go. Volunteer to leave now. Bills are coming no matter who gets the job. Everybody somewhere is gioing to lose something after January.

Thanks for not stamding up while I had our country attack another country in an unjsut way, and for helping to kill over 4,000 citizens of this country. Thank God Almighty we only have a few more months of his disastrous administration. Please pray for an Obama/Biden win so we can move this country back in the right direction.

I hope he thanks every Congressman and Senator running for reelection by name. And mentions how often they voted with him. And I hope he says the word "Nucular". It would be sweet if he would provide us with an emesis moment, or just mention how drunk he is.

I can think of no other President who is so maladjusted to be in the position he's in, and I hope he drags down every Republican who helped him get to be President.

I have two comments. The first is regarding McCain's pick of Vice President. I think that this is an insult to women for McCain to pick such an unseasoned, lightweight running mate and then try to offer her up as an alternative to Senator Hilary Clinton. My second comment is that President Bush must discuss his 8 year term and outline his administration's accomplishments. To not do this would harm McCain's chances at winning since they are so closely tied together in the voter's minds. President Bush needs to tell the American people what he has been doing the past 8 years because frankly the past 2 years have been so bad that they are overshadowing the other years. Like all Leaders, we need to know what were his goals and what was his performance related to accomplishing those goals.

Steve   August 29th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

Why would Bush attack Obama? How could he prove Obama was wrong? I am a Republican, but Bush has been a major dissapointment. If Obama is elected over McCain it is surely because the American people have had enough of the crud of the last eight years. This is a sad time for Republican's. I personally do not defend a president just because he is from my party. This is not football.

sharon   August 29th, 2008 10:18 pm ET

If he's making the case for McCain's presidential
judgement, can't wait to hear him explain away this most recent lapse in good judgement .As I see it, a VP is second in command and must stand ready at ALL times and be qualified to speak for and lead the American public on day 1.The choice of Sarah Palin frightens me .The Obama/Biden ticket is covered in that aspect..the McCain/Palin is not. Biden's experience can carry Obama but I don't think Palin's limited experience can carry McCain.

Evan   August 29th, 2008 10:17 pm ET

Maybe if he is a few seconds under-time he can go ahead and re-cap all of those accomplishments.

What has he really done in all that time, that we are still where we are today?" You're right dear I said, you are absolutely right!

My hat is off to you Mr. President for taking the 'high road' and putting the saftey of our country and of the whole world above the smears and attacks on your administration over the entire 'Lies led to War' stance that the Liberals and the MSM hit you with every day because you didn't reveal the finding of 550 metric tonnes of Uranium Yellowcake until after it had been safely shipped out of the country just last month.

That's real nobilty and will go down in history as one of the humblest acts ever performed by any administration in the face of such harsh and untrue criticism.

I think it's shameful that there hasn't been more news coverage about this very important reversal.

Iraq had violated 16 UN Mandates, and even the Democrats and the press couldn't find anything to complain about with 15 of them, but on the issue of WMD they just went crazy.

Every day we had to hear the reports that 'no evidence of WMD has yet been found', then readily published the thinnest shreds of 'evidence' that 'Lies led to War'. Shame on you.

This was how the entire idea of "we're fighting the wrong war" was born, and you could have killed that idea at the onset, but it would have identified the location in the country and been suseptable to being taken if that were known.

Thank You for taking one on the chin and not playing tit-for-tat with those knuckleheaded Liberals.

The Bush Doctrine is the future for Freedom and Democracy in the world.

WE KNEW AT THE OUTSET OF HIS PRESIDENCY HIS MORAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR OUR SOCIETY AND THE CONSERVATIVE BASE WOULD HAVE AN ECONOMIC COUNTER WEIGHT. MAYBE WE SHOULD COMPARE HIS ECONOMIC GROWTH LAST QUARTER TO CLINTONS LAST QUARTER IN OFFICE. WE SHOULD ASK WHERE THE YELLOW CAKE URANIUM RECENTLY REMOVED FROM IRAQ WENT. I GUESS WHAT REALLY SUMS UP THIS MANS PRESIDENCY WOULD BE ONE OF THE MOST DEFINING ENIGMAS FACING HIS DETRACTORS. THAT BEING: HAD AL GORE WON THE ELECTION WOULD BIN LADEN HAVE NEVER KILLED THREE THOUSAND PLUS INNOCENTS????? THIS EVENT SHAPED HIS PRESIDENCY WHETHER ANY ONE LIKES IT OR NOT. WHAT WOULD GORE HAVE DONE WHEN WE WERE ATTACKED WITHOUT PROVOCATION AND PLUNGED THIS PRESIDENT FRONT AND CENTER. BEFOR WE DECIDE HIS LEGACY WE MUST ADDRESS WHAT GOT US TO THIS POINT. DO THE MATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Palin is not change... she is strange! Palin is, well, Dana Perino. A pretty face that explains away terrible Bush/McCain policy in action. John Mccain thinks any woman will do. He is a sexist!

blahova   August 29th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

With our troubled economy, Romney was the intelligent choice for McCain. I think McCain's insane for not doing that! Most of us republican's were hoping for that, if his people, or he himself ,had listened to the people he wants to represent.

Without Romney, they lost my vote here!

Susan Eisenhower is a republican who is changing parties, as are many other's, who know the same old...same old isn't going to work! Adding a female "hunter" to the ticket –last minute, only shows McCain's desperation! We need someone who thinks before he acts!

There may be SOME disenchanted Hillary fans, but Palin is opposed to the issues that matter most to these women -and they are smarter than that! I would have liked to see Hillary on the ticket, but life goes on and women– especially– can move past this and see that we need change and that McCain's record proves he will go on forever with the same OLD and we can't afford that!

I think the Obama party is energized, will unite and will also bring over many Independents and Republicans. It really IS "time for a change!"

Maybe I will have to wait in long lines for medical care, but at least I'll have a line to stand in.

Right now, I'm afraid to even go to the doctor, because if they discover something serious, it will bankrupt my family, be considered a pre-existing condition and I will end up uninsurable.

Maybe I will pay higher taxes; to help people in need, improve health care, the economy, develop other sources of energy, improve education and not line the pockets of big business and crooked politicians! McCain didn't even bother to vote on a recent bill that affects many of our elderly - our parents, friends, loved ones! Teddy Kennedy, against doctor's advice cared enough to go and vote. What was McCain doing, taking a nap? Wake up America!

Add me to the list of Republicans for change! I'm voting Obama!

Gary   August 29th, 2008 9:46 pm ET

7 1/2 years of accomplishments? Let's see:
(1) An illegal war in Iraq and heading towards $1Trillion in cost with +4,000 dead American soldiers and +10,000 wounded or maimed
(2) Lost focus on the real enemy regrouping in Afghanistan
(2) High unemployment and -$2,000 ave. American worker income decrease since taking office
(3) $4 gasoline and $5 heating oil
(4) Housing values plummeting
(5) Millions of lost jobs at home and sent overseas
(6) NO alternative energy policy -He is an OIL MAN!
(7) Food prices soaring
(8) Medical care costs through the roof

Bush desecrated the office of the President, he has fouled our global standing. He very likely could be prosecuted for high crimes against the Constitution after leaving office. The hard the facts are already showing he will go down as the worst president this country has ever seen. We can not stand 4 more year of his policies in the form of John McCain. Why would a Republican even want this?????

3. Wrecked our military.

I do not trust her to be the head of this entire country if something should happen. Hillary was ready to LEAD, this woman is a joke and no matter how many times Republican 'experts' repeat the lie that she's experienced, I cannot trust her with to be a good VP.

With all due respect to Our President, if George Dubya wore a dress, his name would be "Palin."

Gratitude For What?   August 29th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

For us letting him wreck our country?

Brandy, NJ   August 29th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

Good bye Bushy! It's about time. You will go down as one of the, if not the, worst president ever.

McCain is about to follow as one of the worst presidential candidates for the GOP, especially with this VP nomination

By the way, I am a Clinton supporter who planned to not vote at all in this election. However, because McCain has disrespected women every where by his poor VP choice I will be now voting for Obama.

Bush disrespected women and women's rights. McCain picked his VP based solely on her gender. Why else would you pick someone you only met once and whom never campaigned with you to be your VP? You underestimate the intelligence of women.

I'm all for history but not simply for history's sake.

I would like to thank all the drunken bands of merrily liberals that have been spewing mindless hate over the last 8 yrs. You have help revealed yourselves and the corrupt media as nothing more than far left ideologs whose idea of change includes squashing all diverse thought. And you call me evil? Pinheads..

John   August 29th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

It doesn't matter what he says, no one is listening to him anymore.

Kristina, Seattle   August 29th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Aw, is he going to thank the 16 people who still support him? That's cute.

Tom in CA   August 29th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

President Bush will pander to the fear element of the hockey, soccer or every other sport Mom's! We may as well be endorsing THE EMPEROR FROM THE DARK SIDE (aka Dick Cheney) for President of the USA.

Too bad that McCain has to listen to this VILLAGE IDIOT give a speech at his (John's) convention!

VOTE BOB BARR! VOTE BOB BARR! VOTE BOB BARR!

Anna   August 29th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

it's a gamble...
Historically, most PRES/VP combo tickets are former rivals, and do not necessarily like each other, but are thrown together to complement the other in their weakness...Obama/Biden is true to that heritage.
Remember after inauguration the P and VP are never in one place at the same time.

But to not know much about your running mate.

very interesting.

Mark W.   August 29th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

I am looking forward to this speech and the convention... At least John McCain does not want to start a war in Pakistan like Barack Obama does.

Billy   August 29th, 2008 9:03 pm ET

We will forever be in Bush's debt.
