Sen. Hillary Clinton praised the choice of a female for McCain's vp.

(CNN) – Hillary Clinton praised the historic nature of John McCain's vice presidential selection in a brief statement released Friday that was eagerly anticipated by both presidential campaigns.

“We should all be proud of Governor Sarah Palin's historic nomination, and I congratulate her and Senator McCain," Clinton, the first woman to win a presidential primary, said in the statement. "While their policies would take America in the wrong direction, Governor Palin will add an important new voice to the debate.”

The McCain campaign has made little secret of the fact the selection of Palin — the first woman to appear on a Republican presidential ticket — was in part designed to court supporters of Clinton's White house bid, some of whom feel the New York senator was treated unfairly during the primaries because of her gender and remain wary of supporting Obama.

Palin directly mentioned Clinton by name in her acceptance speech earlier Friday, saying, "Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America. But it turns out the women of America aren't finished yet, and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all."

Clinton's statement reacting to Palin is markedly different than the Obama campaign's initial reaction which made no mention of the historic nature of the Alaska Republican's VP candidacy — instead painting her as woefully inexperienced to be commander-in-chief. The Obama campaign later released a joint statement from both the Illinois senator and his running mate, Joe Biden, praising Palin for making history.

It remains unclear just how many former Clinton supporters Palin may attract, but California Sen. Barbara Boxer said Friday that McCain is "badly mistaken" if he expects backers of the New York senator to break ranks with the Democratic party because of Palin.

If Clinton supporters back McCain and Palin….the complete opposite of what Hilliary Clinton stands for……they have, quite frankly, "dishonored" her.

Annette, Washington, DC   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

The pleasantries are nice. However, McCain has only met Palin twice ( go check it out folks) and now she is his running mate. What is this world coming too…I hope not McCain country.

Kelly from Denver   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN, NO WORLD WAR III!!!

Chris   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

the fix is in. McSame gets his 4 years, clinton gets her 8 in 2012. i really wouldn't put it past her. sad day in america.

Pat Riot   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Congratulations Sarah! Were they alive Barry Goldwater and Robert Taft would be jumping for joy to see the conservative movement reenergized by you. I have watched you for several months now and I am proud to have you represent us in the Republican party. For liberty!

Phil   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

To anyone whom claims Obama is sexist and McCain is not, think again. Senator McCain is the sexist if anyone. He thinks he can pull a quick one on the American people and Hillary supporters in particular by merely picking a female for the VP slot. That if anything is sexist and disrectful to women, particularly Hillary supporters.
Palin has NOTHING in common with Hillary other than gender. Economy, healthcare, environment, Iraq - polar (not intentional) opposites.
McCain is the sexist so don't try pulling that. Real Hillary supporters are more intellegent than that. They were not only supporting Hillary but supporting her ideas and values - non of which that Palin has.

Take back America!
OBAMA/BIDEN - Democrats - AMERICANS

Dems are stuck in the fix they rigged   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Hillary, you were robbed by the DNC and the imposter, Obama.

You are clearly the best.

All those that trashed you and insulted you, will rue the day that they chose to gut the best HOPE for America.

Barbara   August 29th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

Sen. Boxer is corrrect, we Hillary supporters will not vote for John McCain because he selected Palin as his running mate. We will vote for him because he is the only candidate with enough experience, political accomplishments, honesty, and personal strength to lead our nation. Don't try to make Palin your scapegoat. She brings freshness, determination, and the novel philosophy that those who govern do so for the common good of all.

Alex   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

How quickly people forget. Palin, so incredibly unexperienced, only 2 years as a Governor. How about Obama, only 2 years as a senator. Why bother worrying about a possibly unqualified VP when we are on the precipice of an amazingly unqualified president in Obama?

R.C.Davis   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

I think McCain picked right ! Palin brings a lot to the ticket !! RCDavis

priorities   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

First, if Obama wins, Hillary will probably take on a position of much more importance than VP - Secretary of State, or Attorney General. Would she survive the vetting to be a Supreme Court justice? questionable.

And, secondly, along those lines - the most lasting legacy of a president is the supreme court justice(s) he or she brings to the senate for approval. Ginsberg and Stevens are likely to leave the court during the next 8 years. They keep our court from being ultra-right wing conservative. Who do you want nominating justices in their place? That is an incredibly important reason to vote Democrat in this election. This will determine the decisions that affect your children, and their children.

Foreign observer   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

So next time they presidential candidate will take a gay person as VP and again this will be history ! It is a choice which is not based on credentials. A bash into the faces of all longtime Republican politicians.

John K.   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

No qualifications, is opposite to Hillary on the issues, and she has a young son with special needs that will require an immense amount of effort and care in his upbringing - I know, I am the dad of a similar child. Palin is running from her own child. I understand it - but it is the worst thing for her, him and the country. I am saddened by McCain's lame attempt to woo women. John, women are smarter than we are and this will not fly.

Kara   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

WHAT AN INSULT!!!….Does McCain really think just any young woman will fill Hillary's shoes?…NO WAY! HONEY, YOU AIN'T NO HILLARY!!!

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!!!

Stacey Fishers Indiana   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

Insults! Insults!@ INSULTS. Hillary's experience and concerns for women’s can not in no way be compared to Palin. No only is this country RACIST but SEXIST as well. McCain’s choice was a PURE SLAP in the FACE to all the other REPUBLICAN WOMEN HE COULD HAVE CHOSEN! ALSO…. Wolf and Cafferty! Stop comparing Palin to Obama and HILLARY! The requirements for Vice President are very different than PRESIDENT. Why not compare Palin to Biden. McCain has had serious health issues; his age is a clear factor. I DO NOT WANT SOMEONE TO ANSWER THE CALL of Vice President if something should happen to McCain. Has she ever left the country…? WHAT AN IDIOT!

tim, boston   August 29th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

palin's problem is NOT her inexperience,

But her judgement of parading her bikini-clad body in public.

for what?

because she got nothing else to show.

to say that "mcshameless and GOP guys like rove don't get it" is

the understatement of the decade.

Baron   August 29th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Wow, Barbara Boxer shows her mean colors. You can just bet that all the Democrat ladies are boiling mad that McCain made such a great choice — while Obama picked the consumate "Washington insider" that he rails against. What change does Obama really represent? A guy who can't talk about his executive experience — because he has none. Zero. Zip. Biden has never even run a corner store. Now the GOP has two candidates who will rip the Dems apart — a war hero who stayed in captivity because of his men — and a woman who has executive experience while all the while raising five children.

Working mothers, Palin for VP!!

Karen   August 29th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Palin should stop comparing herself to Hillary for other than gender, she does not possess one iota of similarity to Hillary in anything else. The difference between Hillary and Palin is like day and night and anyone who thinks that Palin can and should replace Hillary is just as muddled as McSame.

Tom   August 29th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

I don't see why you keep referring to Barack's experience. Hilary has only served in the Senate, what, one term more than Barack, and only got elected on Name recognition of her Husband being President Being First Lady doesn't even come close to actual Presidential experience.
All those secret meetings, addressing congress, and everything else that her Husband, former President Bill Clinton endured, she wasn't there. So don't count being first lady as actual experience. Which brings me to my point, Hillary Clinton doesn't have any experience either.

shannon   August 29th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

I don't understand how any woman could be disappointed in the Palin pick. Palin has more experience than Obama. She has actually governed a state as opposed to ALL of the men on the two tickets. Palin has worked with Russia. Palin has owned a business. Obama has spent 3 years Washington running for President….how does this constitute experience?

Palin has more experience than Obama.

Ann   August 29th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

This Palin is no Hillary….

Indiana voter   August 29th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

I think that it is a great VP pick. Now, history will be made no matter who gets in office. You either have the first black President, or the first female Vice President in history. I also think that Palin has more experience in running things than Obama has, if we really want to get into a discussion of who has more experience. She is currently the Govenor of Alaska, which she also made history there too, by being the first female Gov. Also she was a mayor before that. Obama has not lead in anything.

KH   August 29th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

So I guess she is the most qualified republican to join the ticket. Doesn't say much for Pawlenty, Romney, Huckabee, Portman, Ridge, Liberman or any of the other GOP supposed all-star line up.

Question is - is this really the best choice to serve as Vice President of America, or it is the best choice to serve to win an election?

James   August 29th, 2008 5:15 pm ET

How can anyone believe this person could serve as president? She was a city council person and mayor of what would normally be considered a small suburb for the majority of career. This is a terrifying pick.

beevee   August 29th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

It is historic for a party where woman could not run for the highest office so far.

Another Oregonian (female)   August 29th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Ditto Phil Newton! Could anyone really believe our support of Hillary is based on gender??

DEX   August 29th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Wow what judgement you have McCain . You really are out of touch to think that by simply choosing a woman you will win. What about the integraty of your asertion that Obama is not qualified to be commander and chief, such a phony u r

Arizona Patriot Woman   August 29th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

This is our Sen. John McCain………..ALWAYS the maverick! McCain/Palin '08!!

Anne   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Obama should have chosen Hillary for his running mate….he would have been a shoo in…..he has his work cut out for him what with McCain picking a woman as a running mate……I will be voting for Obama, as one of the 18 million voters that voted for Hillary….I hope he has a spot picked out for her in his cabinet…..I don't believe that 18 million voters are going to vote for McCain and Palin….they will stay with Obama and Biden………

Kathy (McKee)   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Regarding the Palin pick - Having lived in Juneau, Alaska for 37 yrs, I quickly became aware that Sarah Palin, while having some noteworthy accomplishments as Governor, also was very quick to sell out Juneau in the "Move the Capital" (to Anchorage) issue without regard to the detriment of Juneau's economy, including job losses, housing values and small business. . . . She does not even LIVE in Juneau - the Capital city of Alaska! I certainly would not trust her when it comes to special interests.

Erika, KS   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Gee Mark,
being a active Senator for 1 1/2 years, hardly suggests Obama is ready to to anything! Show me one thing he's accomplished in the Senate? I dare you!

Hillary Guy   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

I'm glad she is my Senator, and thought that Hillary and Bill made the democratic covention finally get off the ground floor. Hillary, is by far 5 times better than Obama, and 10 times the Rep.'s.

I will not bash either Obama or McCain because the slightest insult and now I'm just like Obama and McCain bloggers.

Maz   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

So sad that Palin was picked ONLY because she was a woman. Would she have even been considered otherwise? No, that's why it was such a surprise to the rest of the GOP. If any female voters who were going to vote for Clinton now vote for Palin, well shame on them. That's voting based soley on ovaries - not issues. Those two women couldn't be more diametrically opposed, politically.

I'm sure not many black republicans (all ten of them) are going to vote for Obama just because of his race.

Strategically, to win the presidency, this is an interesting move. But is this all about the race to win the presidency, or is it about who the candidates are and what the issues are?

Vern   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Tis comment from one of the Rep : Hillary - the Democratic Party is SEXIST, Obama overlooked the BEST possible choice for VP - YOU!!!

Oh please go away Rep…this trick will not work. We Dems are past that mess…we are united & will beat the old man & the (last choice minute pick) Palin in November 08.

NORA, FLORIDA   August 29th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

It is amazing how many haters are still bitter. I can't believe that they feel that they are making a statement by just voting for another skirt. Get real!!!

justobserve   August 29th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

While Hillary attacked Obama for his "Inexperience" and was cold on his historical candidacy, her statement showed that she only cares about Palin's gender-conscious nomination, and made light of Palin's stances that are all opposite of Hillary's. A McCain-Palin government will be against all she had fought for. That also showed how sexism and racism are rated with Clinton: gender is more important because women constitute half of the electorate. It seems Hillary reverts to her old Republican leaning, not wanting to fight strongly for Democrats.

Message to Hillary Supporters   August 29th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

McCain wants to drill in Alaska and that's why he picked Sarah
No actually he doesn't.

Nick   August 29th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Out of this group I don't really care who is elected the next President and who is not. I just think our country is in a moral toilet and going down hill fast, economically. As an Independent neither side is doing a whole lot of persuading - you either got an Old man/No experience governor or a No experience Senator/Old man who can't stop his mouth.

Joe   August 29th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

I, for one, would love to see how many of these "so-called" PUMA's are actually Republicans who are just loving the idea that they are making trouble?

Nick   August 29th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

The Democrats must be careful about atttacking Palin. Otherwise the republicans can make it seem as though they are attacking small town America and women. Best strategy is to ignore her.

Danyale Lucado   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

I am absolutely appalled, disgusted, and offended at John McCain's blatant attempt to pimp the female voters of Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton herself, if she actually cares about those female voters and not just her own ambitions, should be equally as disgusted. I am quite fond of Bill and Hillary Clinton. However, her response to this VP pick shows that the candidate with the judgement and integrity needed to lead our country in a more positive direction is obviously Barack Obama.

David, Santa Rosa, CA   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

John McCain has no shame (rhyme uninteded). This man has sold his soul, his integrity, his core beliefs, and has lost himself. I voted for him once… I admired him once… Watching this man's undoing is tragic.

Kelly from Denver   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN!!

James   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Palin for VP???? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! This is awesome. Maybe McCain should appoint my kid brother for Sec. of Treasury. After all, he did save 15 percent on his car insurance by switching to Geico.

Mercedes   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Why did she have to come out and congratulate her of all days, today. It must be that Hillary Clinton sent her brother to speak with the McCain staff and guess who may be behind this. Clinton's brother that's who. I am very disappointed in her because they used her voters emotions today. Yes they are after her group but anyone with brains knows not to vote for this man. How can the republicans bash Obama for months then turn around and say this is fine with them. Anyone notice the difference between last night and this morning. Well let me tell you what I noticed. Last night we had a stadium full to the maximum of americans "the melting pot". This morning all I saw were whites. Why is that? I hope this doesn't spin to a race issue again because it won't be good for the democrates.

Erika, KS   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Hockey Mom, not soccer mom. Go John and Sarah. Ha, ha, ha Obamabot. It really was about not getting Hillary in office after all, wasn't it? Rather settle for an empty suit bi racial man than an experienced woman? Yeah, well, two months to go, I guess we'll see.

Mark   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Obama made a mistake.. he should have chosen Hillary as his veep. She earned it.. she deserved it .

McWho?   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

oh one more thing…a lot of the people on this site who claim to be anti-Obama or pro McCain are paid RNC bloggers…dont let them fool ya. oh no

Liz   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

If any women is to nominated as President or VP its Hillary because of her experience and all she stands for. For McCain to pick Palin is an insult to Hillary supporters, ladies dont be played by the GOP.

stephanie   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

I am outraged and offended that McCain has chosed to exploit a woman for political gain..once again showing his COMPLETE disregard and disrespect for women's causes. Given her lack of experience, young age and NO FOREIGN POLICY CREDENTIALS, he can no longer accuse OBAMA of such…giving Palinis a heartbeat away from the Presidency if elected. Thus, it is clear, the ONLY reason he choose her is to somehow dupe woman and Hillary supporters into thinking Palin can continue where Hillary left off.

How disgusting!! Palin is the QUENN of EXTREME RIGHT WING IDEOLOGY..on the extreme right on women's issues like equal pay, choice, guns, evolution, oil drilling (a huge friend to oil companies and advocate of drilling in ANWR), school prayer, and embraced Bush's economic policies/disasters.

MCCCAIN, THIS UTTERLY APPALLING TO WOMEN AND DISRESPECTFUL TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE..TO USE A WOMAN WHO WOULD BE OTHERWISE UNQUALIFIED AND IS UNKNOWN FOR YOUR POLITICAL GAIN.

So, in 4 years, McCain..when you are too old or sick or forced out by the radical right so their girl can take over, whose interests will you be serving?

If women or former Hillary supporters are fooled for one second into voting for McCain-Palin, you will get what you deserve and leave our country worse off than ever before. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

kelly   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

I am a Hillary supporter through and through, but I was not supporting her because she was a woman. I was supporting her because she was the best person for the job. Obama knows that and so does Biden. They put their feelings above the best interest of the country. However, No Way, No How, No McCain.

Mark G   August 29th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

FYI…a majority of America isn't conservative…they are Americans and real Americans will stand up for their rights. The change is happening now and it will happen in November. I have considered myself to be a moderate conservative. But if being a conservative means that I support the robbing of the poor to give to the rich while whopping them upside the head in judgement…then count me out. Conservative does not equal Christian.

break the ceiling   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

C'mon, look at the big picture here. You want Hillary to have to wait and wait and wait to go through that ceiling? Vote McCain, get him out of the way, let her run against Obama again in 2012 and let her win. Geez, what's 4 more years going to matter? Get your heads out of your behinds and plan for the future.

Tom in Delaware   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I'm sorry I didn't get to hear her whole address given live, but if her delivery is as good as the written speech, then she's going to be a powerhouse on this campaign.

She has to be a SHOCKWAVE to to the Obama camp…oh,well, that's what you get for treating Hillary so badly.

Newsflash- Sarah Palin doesn't need to be Hillary Clinton.

Go McCain/Palin '08 Down with Obama Bi(de)n Drama

ChicagoJosh   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

McCain is losing tons of Republican support today. All those educated people who like a strong leader just realized McCain is not that man. Any educated person can see that Palin has no buisness dealing with two wars, creating peace in the middle east, and dealing with China and Russia.

Obama has slowly proven himself capable over the last year and a half. He has the respect of most the country. Everyone knows he can lead. Palin…. maybe she can too, but she only has 2 months to prove it to your own party, let alone the rest of us.

McCain proved he should not be trusted to make any important decisions.

Brian   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

When this pick was announced, the news should have been all over the fact that Ms. Palin is being investigated for ethics violations by overstepping her boundaries as Governor. Sounds familiar like a current USA executive.

Also she is married to an oil company executive.

This needs to be ALL over the headlines!! What if she gets convicted? That'll look great for the USA's standing in the world.

And for those saying she has more experience than Obama you are WAY out of your mind and need to find your meds. Obama has at least traveled the world and interacted with foreign leaders. And he has had to deal with the issues most Americans are facing today. Not to mention the Harvard education. The most travel Palin has had was to Idaho. And as much as I like Alaska, it is nothing compared to the rest of the country in having to deal with domestic issues. And since when is being a mayor mean anything towards experience? The mayor of my town also runs the local bar down the street.

Obama united 84,000 people who were ready to support him at the convention. Palin has been a mayor of a town of 8,000. BIG difference. Obama's experience makes Palin look like an amateur.

Shannon   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

McCain just ENERGIZED 1/2 of the Republican party-the WOMEN. After Palin's great speech, the women & the young voters in the audience were excited for the first time. McCain had the "judgment" to pick a woman-Obama did not. How will the women voter's "judge" the candidates, when they must choose between the first black president or the first woman vice president? I don't think anyone can know at this point. Women have been ignored, underestimated, taken for granted and not treated well during this campaign.

jorge lopez   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I love you Hillary and because of that and all the bad thing Obama and his Camp. did to you .. I will never vote for him … unless he treat you better this two month… then i will see… love you Hillary…

from Florida…

Martha   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

I am a Democrat; however now when it comes to voting this time. BO should have selected Hillary and I question his judgment when he did not. He will not get my vote! I was a Hillary supporter and will vote Repulican come November. BO stated about equal rights for women..well…where is his equal rights for women..he did not choose Hillary and should have.

earle   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Sara,
You're the poet in my heart.
Never change,
and don't you ever stop.

Maybe if Democratic woman would get over their desire for baby killing we could consentrate on more substantial issues.

A new hater of Democrats.   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

You people are amazing. You complain about change in Washington. Then your Messiah picks another old, career politician.

Now you've got someone (woman is an afterthought) who fights Washington and represents normal, average people better than anyone else in Washington.

She's amazing. And if any of you would bother to read up about her (can you read?) you'd see she's tough, smart and highly capable.

Paul   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

If Hillary was qualified, why is she not the Democratic Nominee?

Bill   August 29th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Clinton did the right thing our of the starting gates. The gloves will come off soon enough. Palin is no Hillary Clinton, or for that matter no Elizabeth Dole, Condi Rice, Marsha Blackburn, Kay Bailey Hutchinson or Christie Whitman–all much more experienced, better woman choices for McCain. This was his first example of a poor execituive decision. No way I want Plian standing up to Putin! She simply cannot be put one heartbeat or skin cancer flair up away from the Presidency!

Dee   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

It's an insult to Hillary Clinton's supporters to think that Palin can replace HRC. Palin may have the beginnings of a good political resume but she is not even in the same league with HRC. Palin is Pale-in as a substitute to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Palin, No Way, No How!!

Florida Daryl   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

McCain Just doesn't get it!

Barrack was making history not only because he's black, but because he radically changed the face of politics.

America's call for change is the history maker—- not a woman pres. or vice pres.

It's obvious that the McCain camp is trying to play catchup as usual—all for a few votes!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08!!!

mama4obama   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Those "showing your anger" over Hillary not being picked as VP or nominated are dishonoring Hillary by behaving in that manner. Palin, no doubt is a decent person, but lets not forget that they are on the wrong side of the tracks when it comes to what Americans need.

It will be great one day when the right woman becomes POTUS, but that time has not come yet….it will, but not yet.

Kathy   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I find it to be insulting to women in general that McCain made this choice of Palin. She may be attractive, charming as well as intelligent but her lack of experience is daunting. Couple that with McCain's age, and there lies the problem. There will be those women who may cast a vote simply because of gender, but not enough to make this choice worth the consequences to the republican party.

Joe   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Sorry to say this, but Hillary Clinton is being way too kind.

The is gender baiting at its best. This is the McCain campaign doing what it is has done all too often in this campaign which is pandering. They have pandered to the right wing of the party of every major decision. Even in this decision, instead of choosing a qualified woman like say Senator Olympia Snow of Maine, because Senator McCain knew that he needed to kiss the ring of the conservative wing of the GOP, he selected a woman who has done nothing to advance the cause of women expect for simply showing up. I think it is insulting that the McCain campaign actually believes women will not see this for what it is worth.

Also, and don't say this often, but I agree with Paul Begalla. Given his age, Senator McCain owed the McCain a nominee that could be an effective leader (remember, he's the one that keeps bringing this issue up). The Governor is not more prepared to be President than Dan Quayle was.

I'm sorry, but her weakness as a viable Vice President hurts the cause of women in this election.

phreakincool   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

All you Hillary supporter who actually think voting for McCain/Palin, think again. The Republican party does not have your best interest at heart. They are not pro-choice. They have no clue about how to fix the economy. Lost your job or your house recently? Good luck, because under more Republican rule, you are on your own. Have you all not been living America the last 8 years? You actually want more of the same treatment? Go right ahead and cut the nose off to spite the face. You all are idiots and deserve what you'll get from McSame.

Hillary for Obama   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Um, yeah… I think I'll stick with the Democrats. I'm still worked up by Obama's amazing speech last night! We will still have a great woman in the White House, and her name is Michelle Obama!!!

Sandy   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

As a former Hillary supporter to the end of the primaries, this tactic of McCain's shows a desperate ploy to get our votes, but NO HOW, NO WAY McCain!

Jeanette Issano   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Palin does not compare to Hillary at all….this is just a ploy by Mccain to garner HRC women voters…it is not going to work. I will not vote for Palin.
Women for OBAMA! Go OBAMA.

Erika, KS   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Wahoo!!! Finally! Clinton, your supporters will ALWAYS love and believe in you! But guess what? Obama doesn't have any accomplishment or enough experience to lead this country after what Bush is leaving!

McCain made a smart move. This woman has governed a state. Obama hasn't done that.

Men in this country think it's perfectly fine for women to work, raise children, run a household, take care of her husband, multi-task, organize, coordinate events, schedules, etc. yet they don't believe a woman can run and manage this country? Please. THIS IS A WINNING TICKET - with experience!

I am a life long democrat and I cried when I heard this news. A great day to celebrate! Now the truth will unfold. Will the public support a non experienced man (Golden Boy Obama) or an experienced man (McCain) with a female running mate. GO McCAIN and Sarah!!!

Absolutely insulting! Sarah Palin may certainly be up and coming but she in no way gets close to the experience and leadership of a woman like Hillary Clinton, let alone any of the many well respected, experienced potential GOP VPs, male or female. Goes to show how stupid McCain and the white male dominated GOP are to believe American women are shallow enough to bite on this token effort.

Message to Hillary Supporters   August 29th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Hillary, we have your back…
@ McCain/Palin '08 for Clinton '12
If you are supporting this ticket b/c Palin is a woman. Then you are confirming one of men's worst false (mostly) sterotype that you just support on gender. Let's see Sarah Palin is: A proud member of the NRA, a war hawk conservative, best friends with Big Oil (she supports drilling in Anwar), currently under investigation for firing someone for her sister, I could go on and on. So if you supported Hillary on the issues then you can't support Palin. If you want to see the issues Hillary cares about murdered by a McCain veto pen then by all means vote for McCain/Palin.

Skip   August 29th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

What is John McCain thinking! It all to obvious he is out to get the women's vote! I never heard of Gov. Palin…this is one sorry election and nothing to be proud of! On just what do we base out voting preferences??? It all comes down to political ideology: anthing to be elected! Shame, shame, shame.

JS   August 29th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

I must say it is hillarious to me that all these Obama supporters are wondering why Mccain didn't pick one of the well known establishment picks male or female. I am not a Mccain or Obama supporter but at least me consistent!

Matt   August 29th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Clinton's already hinting at sending her supporters McCain's way in that statement.

Ex-PUMA 4 Obama   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

It makes me want to throw up just thinking about either one of them.

Ugh!

Cindy   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

McCain tricks will not work with me! This woman Palin is not a Hillary Clinton who championed for women rights. This Clinton supporter & a lot like me will vote for Obama/Biden.
I will not be tricked!

Ben Langhinrichs   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

The choice seems somewhat insulting to women if it is a ploy to get Hillary Clinton voters, but I don't really think that is the biggest problem. Given that the main appeal of Sarah Palin is supposed to be to pro-life pro-family voters, I would think they would have a really hard time with a woman who would leave her 4 to 5 month old Down's Syndrome child to go out on the campaign trail. Given that a great deal of press has been given to her decision to keep the child, knowing it had Down's Syndrome, it then seems incongruous to leave it behind, or to take it with you. This is not to say that a mother can't be Vice-President, or President for that matter, but I would not personally run for office with a four month old special needs child. Doesn't the child's welfare come first at that early age?

Felly   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

McCain wants to drill in Alaska and that's why he picked Sarah.

Tanya   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Great choice for McCain! Women are independent thinkers and we won't forget how the "Men's Club" of the Democrat Party "brushed Hillary aside" to put Obama in.

Michael Dunn   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Palin is perfect for the GOP ticket, she's for destroying ANWR drilling for more oil, she's under investigation for abuse of power in Alaska, yep sounds like the perfect choice for McBush's VP. My God America wake up, this may be a historic choice but I would certainly hate to see this be the first woman president of the US, what a sad selection.

Cindy, Hawaii   August 29th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Her qualifications are admirable but how is she going to help run the country with five kids and a baby with Down syndrome? And to think if something unfortunate were to happen to McCain that SHE would be president is scary!

Susan Allison   August 29th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Shame on the Republican party again. You think we support Hillary because she is a woman? Don't be so smug about your selection…we're not buying it!

ben   August 29th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

If in this election Hillary supporters do actually vote McCain and Obama loses, do you PUMA supporters really think the rest of us will support Hillary? She ran a disgustingly dirty campaign, and at the end fabricated charges of sexism and the idea that she won the vote (note: she didn't). Then she deliberately divided the party for her own political future and ambition. I have yet to hear one concrete example of sexism she faced, I would love a PUMA to enlighten me to one.

James Moon   August 29th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Great pic!
Even Clinton recognizes the historical signficance of a woman VP.

Palin has more experience than Obama and has real solutions to the economy problems, unlike Obama's speech rhetoric. No disrespect to obama, who seems like a good guy.

Bonnie   August 29th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

The absolutely best criticism McCain had about Barack Obama was "lack of experience." Then McCain chooses for the office that is just "a heartbeat away from the Presidency" someone who is ENORMOUSLY under-qualified by picking "Sarah Who?" He's just nuts!

laura   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

how can a woman even think of running with mccain in the first place? he voted against equal pay for equal work. if she truly is a reformer, that should be one of the things she takes on if they win.

Raphael - Fon du Loc   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Palin is vastly more experienced in all areas than Obama or Clinton or Biden. There will be no fascist dictatorship visa a via Obama, so get the CNN crowd can do what Obama told Hillary's supporters to do, "just get over it".

TD   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Hillary once again shines. But what does not shine is the VP that McCain has chosen. Does McCain not get it? We are not women of the 30's. We are women of 2008. I find it an insult to Hillary and all other Hillary supporters to think this will guide us to vote for him.and his new VP. Get real! I find this very disgraceful to all women!

Hey Democrats…Is it possible that this might not even be about you? I know that would be a novel concept for you guys to accept.
As a conservative, I was not thrilled with this choice either and had to eat a lot of crow about saying "even if he thought that a woman or a person of color was qualified, he couldn't tap them because of all of the backlash about pandering". BUT the more I learn about her, I realize that this might make some sense.

Sharon   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

OMG - could a woman really run the USA? To quote the Dem rock star "YES WE CAN"!!!!! Brilliant choice!!!!!

Paul   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

I agree, Palin is no Hillary Clinton, but if McCain could pick a woman, why couldn't Barack pick Hillary? If Obama talks about change, an African-American man and a White woman would be change. McCain brings about the change Obama talks about.

Palin as the GOP V.P. running mate has made me very excited!!!

What?   August 29th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Palin has high approval rating as governor in Alaska.
Bush had high approval rating as governor in Texas.

Palin is known as a bipartisan governor.
Bush was known as a bipartisan governor.

Palin is a big oil governor in Alaska.
Bush was a big oil governor in Texas.

Palin is a female version of Bush. McCain has gone old man crazy. I think he thought he was picking one of his daughters as VP since he has two children older than Palin. Palin's nickname for McCain is Grandpa.

Really the only thing that McCain got of this pick is that people are talking less about Obama's brilliant, and most inspring message to date. Too bad McCain looks super risky now.

McDumb   August 29th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

McOld got it all twisted. He must be held and very well questioned and criticized for this political decision. This is a man whose theme of his convention is "PUT COUNTRY FIRST". Then pick a non qualified candidate for his VP in order to win an election. What happened to all the experienced candidates who were vetted? I guess thats the price the Americans pay for having Evangelicals decide who they want for president instead of the pocket book issues and policies.

McCain's choice is outright laughable, and a real affront to all Hillary has worked for. Can't imagine her supporters will fall for it, especially those who value a woman's right to choose. This is Karl Rove's latest way to attract the religious right.

laura   August 29th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

i would love a woman president but it has to be the right woman; not someone who was a beauty queen and has less than 2 years of government experience. plus she is running as a "family values" candidate, yet she just had a baby with down's syndrome. who is going to care for that baby while she is busy learning the ropes in washington?

Truth B Told   August 29th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Obama said Sarah isn't ready to be president so what makes him think that he is.

david   August 29th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Why is this historic? Because she is a woman? So was Geraldine Ferraro. Because she is a woman AND a republican? So what. This is a pathetic bit of political shenanigans from an obviously desperate campaign. If only McCain worried more about actually learning what is wrong with this country and finding ways to fix the problems then is simply getting bogged down in finding a way to beat Obama.

Atlian   August 29th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

How is this history? Wasn't Geraldine Ferraro a vp nominee?

Disenfranchised   August 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

The idea behind Palin's selection for VP pick is not entirely as noble or as groundbreaking as it seems. While Gov. Palin's selection IS truly a historic moment, it comes as a shameless and transparent attempt to court supporters of perhaps THE most formidable candidate for the top office who happens to be a woman in Hillary Clinton.

While I am sure some people may be convinced to switch over because of Gov. Palin's gender, it is an insult to the hardcore supporters of Hillary to even begin to compare her with Hillary Rodham Clinton. Not only does Gov. Palin's views look to limit women's rights to choose for themselves, but she is also such a PARTISAN and DIVISIVE choice that at the end of the day, all the McCain camp has done is further alienate those of us who have been put off by inexperience, negative and partisan politics — all of which are highlighted by this selection.

With all due respects to Gov. Palin, there are far more qualified candidates - FEMALE candidates on the Republican side than she is. Her presence on the stage only highlights McCain's AGE, HEALTH, and his recent FLIP FLOPPING that makes Sen. John Kerry look like the most resolute politician in all of history.

To suggest that Hillary supporters and independent women and voters out there would switch over just because Gov. Palin is female is a definite slap in the face and really underestimates America's ability to think for themselves.

Howie   August 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Thanks McCain, great choice. That decision has the democrats wondering how can they can overcome this decision. Bet the polls will reflect a positive jump for the McCain camp. American women would be crazy not to pull for Palin

I am a life long Democrat for the first time going to vote Republican…. thanks to the dumb Democrats choice of leaving out Hillary on the ticket and NObama at the head.

Palin is an excellent choice. I am on board…
Go McCain/Palin all the way to the White House. '08 & '12.

McCain is moderate and experienced at the top.

He's got my vote.

Marxists for Obamessiah   August 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

This is the happiest I've ever been as a conservative since I became a conservative back in 2000.

THIS pick, Obama-kids, is what REAL boldness and REAL change looks like… when Republicans get back to their Conservative roots instead of trying to be "liberal-lite" and "out-Democrat" the Democrats.

2008 will be a land slide… think "Reagan/Bush 1984."

Irene -- New York, NY   August 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

I was an ardent Hillary Clinton Democrat, and while I will not — cannot — vote for the McCain Palin ticket due to obvious policy differences, I must say I was surprised and weirdly admire McCain for making such a risky — or do I mean reckless — choice. It's like by choosing her, he was saying… "All you people who want change… Here's change. Cause your guy — BO — couldn't even get over himself enough to offer the vp slot to the woman who so deserved it — because, to him, Hillary Clinton was an inconvenient truth he was unwilling to embrace.

I will vote for Obama but it doesn't mean I don't still feel gypped.

Connie   August 29th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

I am a Democrat and I am a woman. My vote was going for Hillary. But the DNC did her wrong! Obama did her WRONG. If people had wanted Biden they would have voted for him on both attempts. But they did not. Why on earth would you make him number 2 ? If something happens to Obama then Biden steps in..No Thanks. Did'nt vote for him and don't want him.
Big Mistake Obama..You are an Arrogant Fool. Hillary was your ticket to the Presidency. She is the only one in the entire Primary that was worth a plugged nickel.

Go MCCAIN/PALIN!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Hillary supporters;
Vote for McCain\Palin because of her gender and with the next supreme court appointment you can say goodbye to Row V. Wade.

Nova   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

For people who attack Palin for lacking experience, they should do a matchup tally with Obama's experience. It's actually pretty close. Well, not that close if you count that Palin had executive experience and actually balance a state budget, something Obama has never done in his lifetime.

On a funny note, the ticker about Obama speech got push all the way down by Sarah Palin's ticker. The headline today has been pretty much about John's VP pick. What great timing!

Election Watcher   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

David Peter   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Do Hillary supporters really believe one's gender is of greater significance than THE REAL ISSUES AND CHALLENGES in America today? Palin is a wolf in sheeps' clothing and McCain is counting on this. Please don't be fooled by this sellout of an old man.

Wow!   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Women are smarter than you think, John McCain! You can't fool them with your gimmicks.

Dori in AZ   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Could we get serious? Palin is NOT Hillary Clinton. Her lack of experience is a slap in the face to all the capable and well-vetted women in politics who could have made a good VP choice. Were they not selected by McCain because they aren't young enough? Or pretty enough? Certainly, the qualifications of every other woman who has been in play during this process are significantly higher than Palin's!!!

McCain is pandering, pandering, pandering. He thinks the voters - in particular, the women voters - in this country are fools.

Sorry, McCain. If the phone rings at 3 AM, I don't want someone with a serious lack of credentials in either national and/or international experience anywhere near it! I'll take the Obama-Biden team anyday!

Speider   August 29th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

At least the republicans are getting a lot of free press. My guess is Palin will drop out as soon as her background and looming political power abuse troubles hit the press. Meanwhile, free press is good press.

Linda   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

McCain is showing he listens to the voters, unlike Obama's lies when he says the voters make decisions. HA. When they ask Obama to do something, he says NO, when they ask him to RE FLIP, HE SAYS NO…and hopes they will agree with maybe 90 percent of his other choices. THESE ARE EVEN ON DEMOCRATIC and HIS own positions before securing the nomination.

McCain in continuing further his Maverick politics, with a woman whose record of fighting unethical government and special interests.

He's showing again he isn't afraid of bringing bold change.

AND, she has more experience in the Executive branch than both Pres and VP candidates on the opposite side. LOL AND….her foregin policy experiience is greater than the Dem Pres nominee too, being in charge of the Naitonal guard and ACTUALLY VISITING WOUNDED in Germany, last year, instead of like OBAMA WHO CANCELLED HIS VISIT WITH WOUNDED BECAUSE HE COULDN'T BRING A CAMERA CREW.

Billtom   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

The Democrats say "she isn't experienced." What do you expect them to say??? Give her time and exposure and you will find that she is poised, articulate and tough as nails. Good choice McCain………..

Bobby from MS   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

What are you democrates smoking? Palin has more executive experience than Nobama. She has more commander n cheif qualfications being a Governor and head of her states national guard.

Sounds to me like you should have put a woman on your ticket. I think she will make a great VP. She also will MOBALIZE the conservative base. Moderate Democrates and Independants will be more likely to vote for the GOP.

GO MCCAIN/ PALIN!!!!!!!!!

So, what exactly is the historic nature of her nomination? Ferraro was picked as a running mate for Mondale well over 2 decades ago. Oh I get it.. it's historic because she is historically the least qualified person to manage to get their name on a major party ticket. Congrats to Danny Quayle for finally moving down to the #2 spot.

Loose Lips Sink Ships   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Gov. Palin firmly put her foot in her mouth during her debut speech. She violated the first premise of operational security for military families. She announced to a world-wide audience her son’s specific unit, his MOS (military occupational specialty) and the specific dates of the unit’s deployment. This just is not done, ever. If I were the commander of that unit I would be screaming to the Pentagon to change the deployment and I would transfer that boy as far away from my unit as I could.

BTW, I am a military father and I did command an Air Force squadron during the Vietnam War.

Sarah Palin does not understand national security and she does not understand the needs of our great military.

S. TINER   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

DON'T INSULT THE INTELIGENCE OF WOMEN. THEY WILL NOT VOTE FOR A WOMEN JUST BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMAN. HILLARY WAS QUALIFIED FOR HER POSITION IN THE CAMPAIGN DUE TO HER INTELLECT AND EXPERIENCE. GOV PALIN DOES NOT MEET THESE QUALIFICATIONS.

John in Binghamton NY   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

It is unfortunate, but the vast majority of people never pay attention to the issues, so picking any woman will attract some of the low information voters.

I think this could get McCain the win. It is really scary prospect.

Please vote the issues and not your gender. We can not afford to move backwards.

Bob Stephens   August 29th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

I wonder if anyone realizes that Palin is already under investigation for trying to use her position as governor to get her sisters ex husband fired from his job as a state law enforcement person Here is the story in part,

"State lawmakers approved an investigation late last month into whether Palin retaliated against former commissioner Walt Monegan for not firing a state trooper entangled in a divorce and ongoing custody battle with Palin’s sister. The investigation will also examine whether Palin or any of her family members pressured Monegan to fire state trooper Mike Wooten because of the messy divorce.

John Mccain reminds me of the Senior in college that preys on the incoming college freshman female. Sneaky tactic, brilliant in a way, but the obivious. Women across this great nation, including his wife, (who probably put him up to it), should be infuriated with John Mccain to think because he waves a female in front of your face, that your that gulliable. Mccain has fallen to a new low, desperate times calls for desperate measures. I'd rather have the negative ads, than to see a man fall at his lowest, and would do anything for a quick fix

I'm astonished any woman in power–would consider a working professional, mother, former mayor/lt. Governor, and now Governor–unqualified to become the 2nd in line for the White House when a total Nuncio like Janet Pelosi is the 3rd in line and gets Boxer's glowing endorsement.

No matter how this election turns out, we are witnessing history.

I am a woman who is an Obama supporter. And I see exactly what is happening to the Republican Party. Their time is near to an end and they know it.

After Obama's achievement last night, the Repubicans had no choice but to do this.

Also, this was the only way the Republicans could seat at least 15,000 people in one building.

Just by the reactions on the Republicans faces and voices, and this includes McCain's twitching facial reaction, goes to show that they know their time is up.

Obam/Biden-all the way to Washington !!

Umm, Sarah Palin called Hillary Clinton a whiner just a few months ago and there is a video of it (google palin clinton whiner). Palin has no respect for Clinton and brings nothing to the table compared to the experience and policies of Clinton.

it took two tries by the obama team to say something positive about a historic moment (albeit for the republicans) of a second woman to be select as a VP running mate.

Is this what change is?

And, I don't think I'd be using the word "inexperienced" until at least Nov 5.

Hey CNN, I noticed there is nothing about Obama being up by 8 % in the Gallup tracking poll. And this is before the speech. Not that I am surpised, considering your biais, but please.

Scott Robinson-Woodinville   August 29th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Okay, a mandatory contratulations was in order.

Now, Hillary, you ARE going to rip into thisunqualified lightweight for being opposed to every principle in politics you've ever stood for, RIGHT?

It's 3AM. Somewhere in this troubled world, a crisis is brewing. McCain thinks the best person to be answering that phone to defend American should he not be around is…Sarah Palin?

Truth be Told   August 29th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

What a joke. McShame must think that the Clinton supporters are stupid. They voted for Clinton not just because she is female but because they share her values and vision for America. The only thing that Palin has in common with Clinton is that they are both female.

Very respectful statement… Can you imagine if this "WAKES UP" the republican women base & Palin becom
