Clearly Palin is the most qualified candidate in the field, more so than Obama, Biden or McCain, she has extensive executive experience (2 years) as Governor of a large state with national security implications (Alaska) and she has additional executive experience as Mayor of a now prominent municipality (Wasilia City). McCain's pick of Palin as VP says a few things to me. He plans to have Alaska's oil resources fully exploited as payback for this nod. Before any alternative sources of energy are serious explored, the oil industry and the politicians in their pockets want to squeeze every last drop of our oil sold at record profits in the name of "helping" the American people. If this wasn't transparent enough, McCain feels he has the experience needed on every issue to be president and won't have to listen to a VP with virtually no experience at the national level. In addition to killing his 'inexperience' argument, there's also the little problem of the firing scandal she claims she knew nothing about (and reminiscent of the federal attorney firings, a similarity I'm sure Obama/Biden will point out.) She's also admitted to smoking pot and has been quoted as saying she cannot pull a Bill Clinton and say she never inhaled. Biden will beat her in the debates, too.

I think he's miscalculated. The HillBillies wanted Hillary to not only get there, but be the first. Many of them are not likely to give another woman the chance to be president.

Fortunately for Bush Sr. his choice of Quayle didn't affect him in his initial election because he was still riding the coat tails of Reagan. it would be interesting to see how much impact (if any) Quayle - even more experienced as he was by that time - had on Bush being defeated for a second term. One of the ticker items above mentioned the last time someone with such little experience was chosen to be VP – Agnew. And we all know how well THAT turned out.

Those who simply cannot be convinced of any political affiliation other than Republican will put a positive spin on this. But the fact remains McCain just destroyed his major weapon against Obama because rather than chosing a Biden-calibre candidate to overwhelm the experience question, all he's done is level the playing field, except that Obama has more experience in federal politics and his prior experience involved communities with larger populations than the one Palin ran. I'm from Saskatchewan where communities can become cities with only 5,000 people; Palin's stomping grounds would barely qualify.

Let's be honest here. It's great to have a woman on the ticket, but this is a terrible, terrible choice. If McCain's health deteriorates in Office, can Palin replace him as president??

This is an awful decision and clearly points to McCain's lack of confidence in his chances of becoming the President. After a week's worth of "poor Hilary" commericals in an attempt to sway unhappy Hilary supporters, McCain has resorted to the next level of dirty politics. All you Obama supporters don't seem to understand that Palin is the most consistent conservative Republican in the mix for the candidates being vetted for the VP spot. It is evident that McCain is not considered a true social conservative. Palin is – and this will help to reestablish the support of the social conservative base, which is huge for the Republicans. Groups like Focus on the Family and the NRA will warm up more to McCain now. She is also staunchly pro-life and pro-family.

I think it's sad that people think she was chosen as a Hillary surrogate. She has accomplished much in politics whether at a municipal or state level and each time, has faced opposition about her age and experience level and has excelled in her new role.

Also, the argument about experience cannot be applied to her in the same way. McCain's criticism of Obama is because he has little experience, given the fact that he's applying for a commander in chief job. I get the fact that there are still many women voters out there who are disappointed, and indeed heartbroken, about the fact that Senator Clinton is not the nominee of the Democratic party, but there's a reason they followed Hillary. It had to do with more than the simple fact that she was a woman. Hillary, in my mind, represents what all fathers of daughters, conservative or liberal, hope their little girls grow up to be. WHAT A HYPOCRITE MCCAIN IS!

Talk about someone with NO experience!

Palin was picked for ONE reason. To try and get the women voters who are still ticked off about Hillary.

44 years old, mother of five, 13-month old sone with Downe Syndrome.

Cheney was always hiding in his "ubndisclosed location" and I suppose that Palin will be absent quite a bit due to inclement weather, snow days, flu season, school holidays, unlesss she just decides to turn over the care of her younger children to the Nannies. So much for FAMILY VALUES!

She is still under investigation for firing the state's Public Safety Comissioner for not firing her brother-in-law whoi is a state trooper. Palin claims a staffer was responsible and she had NOTHING to do with it. She is a lifelong member of the NRA and she's all for drilling in Alaska.

Not as risky as selecting someone with less then three years experience and no executive experience to run a country.

Palin ran a state.

Let's be honest here, John McCain is closer to death's door than ANY president who's ever run for office. So for him to select someone with ZERO foreign policy experience, after having told us that Obama is NOT ready because he lacks that experience, who is just a heartbeat away from the presidency just makes no sense.

Obama was in the state senate for 8 years, and a US senator for 3 years. He has proven his judgment by being right on Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran, and he has shown his ability to command the respect of leaders (and people) all over the world. And yet, John McCain is arguing that HE isn't ready, but that somehow Palin IS ready? Seriously?

Obama himself is more risky then any one in the world. and he is not a maverick. McCain is brilliant.

I always knew that McCain was a "high roller" of the political dice. However this roll is for "all the marbles" and it is just possible that McCain's final role will be "snake-eyes." This is going to so backfire that Obama will ease down the yellow brick road to the White House.

If a MAN had Sarah Palin's resume, would HE still be nominated as McCain's VP pick. This just makes your wonder huh?

What a load of garbage. The libs were going to say whoever McCain picked was awful. What's the difference between Obama and Palin, they both have limited political experience. For all we know Obama could be like Dan Quayle.

Great choice! 4 Barack Obama. John Mc Cain has just nailed his coffin and I am grateful. This just shows how out of touch the Republicans are-Dem's and Independents weren't for Hillary because she was a WOMAN!! They were for her and Barack's core values of women’s rights, healthcare reform, and education reform. They were for her to get us out of Iraq. Has anyone in the media speculated that Romney, Palenty, KAY Bailey-Hutchinson or any of the other top contenders up until yesterday said no thanks to John McCain? After all it would damage their political future to be on the biggest landslide loss in history.

Hillary Clinton supporters did not back Clinton because of her anatomy. They backed her for her wealth of experience, her enormous talent, and her positions on issues that matter to them. Obama shares her vision, her priorities. Palin is no Hillary Clinton. What was McBush thinking?????
