John McCain has chosen Sarah Palin to be his VP.

(CNN) – Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket for the White House in November, a senior McCain campaign official has told CNN.

Watch: McCain introduces Sarah Palin as his VP

Palin, 44, is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election.

An advocate of drilling for oil in her state's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she is little known outside of Alaska.

WHO???

What a low move to pick someone ONLY because of their gender. I've never in my LIFE heard that name before..

Josh   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Isn't she under investigation in Alaska for abuse of power?

Kevin L.   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I'm worry for Joe Biden at the VP debate. Any attack to Palin would be seen as "attacking a woman".

Yeah, I definitely won't vote for McCain now since Palin is an advocate of drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

WayneVT   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I can't wait for the VP debate….Biden is going to dismantle her!

Woman VP-cool!!   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

SARA PALIN FOR PRESIDENT in 2012!!! Let's turn over Roe vs. Wade!!!

NO HILLARY- EVER!!

McCain for president 2008- Let's turn over Roe vs. Wade!!!

Chilly, Dallas Tx.   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

So the GOP is trying to get those bitter Hillary supporters, I'd take offense because it seems their trying to play with peoples intelligence.

JD   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

This is great! I was against Obama, but not necessarily for McCain- but Palin is a great choice. She is smart and stands up against corruption. I would vote for her!

Obidan08   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Now I see how desperately McSame needs the women.

IT WON'T WORK!

Dia   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

How can you be a Hillary supporter and now a supporter of McCain?

Just because he picked at woman as his VP doesn't mean she is the best choice. She is no Hillary, does she stand for the same things Hillary stands for? Or were you just supporting Hillary because she was female?

Jana   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

I am a Hillary supporter and I am telling you that McCain pick is brilliant, he gets my family votes. She is much better then Biden. By the way VP do not need an experience, a president needs it. McCain will get a 30% of Democrats with his pick. I love McCain.

loretta   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Who?? Is right! What about Colin Powell? Huckabee? Romney? Condi? Very disappointed!

Sue   August 29th, 2008 10:53 am ET

This is a poor choice for McCain. If he thinks that putting a woman on the ticket will bring women voters to him he is vastly mistaken. This woman is pro-life, andwill work with McCain to overturn Roe vs. Wade. She has no foreign policy experience, 1 yr as governer of Alaska, and was the mayor of a remote town in Alaska. Be wise people, Palin is not capable of being President as John McCain is not capapble to be President.

An ex-beauty queen who's been in office for a year-and-a-half!

Great judgment McCain.

If he drops dead, I'm sure she'll be ready to lead the whole nation on Day 1!!! She's the perfect leader to handle the war, world peace, and foreign conflicts. She's like Dan Quayle…but better!

mcheck57   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Picking this woman will not get McCain the female vote. She is the complete opposite of Hillary Clinton-Pro Life, pro drilling. Does he really think he will get Hillary supporters with this choice? If anything those women on the fence will vote Obama.
I can't wait for the Vice Presidential debates.

Cal dem   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

McCain pandering is nothing new. Now, will women fall for it? Will women seal the fate of women's rights and progress by falling for this? I can't wait to find out.

Dont forget what Hillary stands for, and dont fall for this McCain ploy for votes!!!!!

laxraddad   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

She ain't Hillary,… she's better than Hillary! She has more executive experience than Obama! With a 90+% approval rating plus she's NOT a lawyer. Certainly she's a darkhorse candidate but let's see how this plays out. Wake up America! NOBAMA!

Kevin   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

I'm glad that a woman has a chance, but I'm still backing Obama.

Abby :)   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Doesn’t his completely undermine his 'inexperienced' argument since he can die and she could be president?

Jeb   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Lack of experience?!?!?! As a VP she has much more executive experience than Obama does… and he wants to be the pres. To me it just highlights how little experience Obama has when McCain's VP has much more!!

p weinberg   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

He has been bashing Obama for being young and inexperienced? He is 72 years old and has had health issues – shouldn't his VP be someone who really can lead? This is just pandering at it's worst.

Lexington Green   August 29th, 2008 10:52 am ET

It could work… after all this is the same electorate that re-elected George Bush. They are just trying to lower the bar for the gullibility of the typical dis-engaged American Voter. Maybe it will be a home run.

I'm laughing so hard. He's TOTALLY blown it. He can't say a WORD about Obama's "lack of experience" now…and that was ALL he had against him. He just handed the presidency to Obama! Woo hooooooooooooooooooooo

MC in TX   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Well, there goes his argument about Obama's supposed lack of experience. Come on – the man is 72 years old, and his choice for VP is a young woman whose sole political experience is two years as Governor of a remote and highly Republican state and time spent as Mayor and a City Council Member in Wasilla, Alaska, population 5400. She has zero national experience, zero foreign policy experience. Is this who you really want to take over if McCain expires in office???

Chi4Obama   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Hmmm,

If a MAN had Sarah Palin's resume, would HE still be considered for VP. Just makes you wonder huh.

mike s.   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

McCain decries Obama's lack of experience… then picks her as VP???

Terry   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

This is an obvious attempt to get Hillary's 18 million votes. And you know what? After what the DNC did to Hillary, it is very tempting.

Prediction: HILLARY VS PALIN 2012….WELCOME PRES HILLARY!

mimi   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

who????? UMM who is she? what has she done????

Beverly, NYC   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Biden will chew her up and spit her out. So much for the experience only candidate. I guess his first choice didn't want the job, don't blame them, who wants their career to go up in flames when he loses.
Now I know McCain has given up and not really serious about winning.
Who is going to trust this woman to run the nation should something happen to McCain.

Shirley-Ohio   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Big mistake. Hillary supporter wanted Hillary not just any woman. The wanted Hillary because Hillary has accomplished so much. This was a big mistake on the behalf of John McCain because this woman is not capable of running the Country in the fact that something was to happen to hip. Hillary herself is now going to work as hard as she can to get Obama elected as Hillary herself wanted to be the first woman President. This pick is no gamechanger, it just makes Obama look even better.

Reality Check Richmond Virginia   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Sara   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

I would like to tell McCain thank you on behalf of all Democrats, he just gave Obama/Biden the election. If he was trying to get Hillary's female voters he could have at least picked Condi who is actually known.

Amy   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Obama just won. You can turn off the TVs and stop reading the news, you hear me, I'm sayiing it out and loud, Obama won the nomination.
What American would elect a 44 year old woman from Alaska! I think this is a nice way for McCain to lose the election. Actually, McCain, this truly goes to my heart, I should say to our hearts.
YOu are serving us the win on a silver platter because you love this country so much you know you are not the one who is gonna be able to deliver the change you know we need and that Republicans will not bring either.

McCain we love you!!! Yes Obama supporters love you for serving us the win on a silver platter.

I know you did this on purpose!

OMG, is someone gonna wake me up, Is this real?????
Did he really chose her!!!

HALELULIA!!!!!!!!!

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm going crazy!!!!!!

Dave, Illinois   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

McCain just won the election. You Obamite's whining and pathetic insults are music to my ears. Obama's ego and lies started the ship sinking and now McCain's pick just opened up the hull. Way to go Mac!!!!!

Joe   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Well, this certainly puts the experience factor off the table. This woman does not have the experience to be a heartbeat away from the presidency for a man who would be the oldest elected president in history.

Fred   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Hey Debbie,
I follow this blog and everybody knows you are a male republican! The game is up!

Mary   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Wow this is shocking…
This is an insult to women… obviously just to pick up disillusioned Hillary voters. As what one might call a former 'PUMA', I'm firmly behind Obama now!!!

Clear thinker   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

I hope that this doesn't make the Hillary "supporters" (ie: closet republicans) try to justify voting for McCain this fall. If they go there solely because he chose a woman shows that that was the only criteria they had.

It's sad that people don't realize the difference between an opponent and an enemy. In the democratic nominee race, Clinton and Obama were opponents who actually shared many similar views. Now that it's over, they can focus on the enemy. The "enemy" is not even McCain, the man, but the Bush/McCain mindset and ideals that have brought this country down to where it is.

Please vote intelligently and stick with Obama/Biden '08

Robyn   August 29th, 2008 10:51 am ET

I support Obama and I would LOVE it if he picked Pailin. McCain has it totally wrong – no way Hillary supporters would help any other woman but Hillary make history. No Way in Heck will they help to get Pailin into the White House with McCain. They want Hillary to be the first woman elected president – if Pailin gets in with McCain at his age you can bet seeing her run and win in 2012. Hillary supporters are not dumb – obviously McCain has a very narrow view of women! Love the pick John – way to go!! Now Hillary is going to campaign her behind off for Obama!!

All you idiots still acting like you've been lifelong democrats by choosing cool user names need to find a new strategy. You republicans are only losing because you have been underhanded and conniving for the past 8 years.

WeLuvObama   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Ha! Ha! Republicans – John McCain has just handed this election to President Obama. Why would he pick someone that no one knows and has less experience than Obama? Is it because he is trying to pander to Hillary's supporters? The Lord told me tell you – IT WON'T WORK, No way, No How, No McCain. This so funnnnnyyyyyyy!!!!!

BK   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

At least McCain doesn't have an upside down ticket. She is a Govenor and was a mayor. She has more experience than Obama. McCain truly is a Maverick. The DNC installed their candidate and shoved Clinton out with the help of the media. We will have the first woman vp.

lwhite   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

McCain being a sexist thinks that one women is the same as another..as Hillary did so well…just pick a woman………..

Dr Gonzo   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Palin has experience in the top political job in Alaska (Governor), Obama has experience in…….wait……..well…………….nevermind.

Quinn - Houston, Texas   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Make no mistake. Picking Palin is an insult to the intelligence of Hillary supporters. You can't just pick ANY woman and expect her supporters to follow.

Palin does NOT represent the views of the vast majority of women in this country.

No way, no how, no McCain.

Obama/Biden 08!

Smart, attractive, and a reformer…Too bad the current Republican party's policies are repugnant to everything America stands for. Once the GOP evolves into the type of party where the majority are the likes of Palin, Schwartzeneger, and Bloomberg, I'll definitely give them another look.

Wow…..you gotta give McCain credit for Strategy…he`s certainly making sure he stays in the game. Don`t know anything about Sarah Palin, but the fact that he chose a woman, younger, etc makes me wonder whether she really was the best person for the VP position or whether this was just pure strategy. Either way…..good move McCain! That will certainly ruffle some feathers.

However, my support still goes with Obama!

Denise   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Obama/Biden '08

s.m.   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Amazing choice. Palin brings back the outsider/maverick angle to McCain's campaign. She also injects some youth, and makes the McCain ticket more palatable to the scorned Hillary supporters who have been threatening to cross the party line.

McCain-Palin '08

Ryan   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I will be ecstatic if this is the actual choice. This would actually top Lieberman as bad choices go for McCain. It comes off as completely desperate to get Hillary's supporters.. and Palin is no Hillary. Also it goes completely against the republican attack line of inexperience. No one has heard of Palin and she has been a the Gov for less than 2 years?!?!

Congrats McCain, you just solidified this election for Obama

AP   August 29th, 2008 10:50 am ET

You know, it's ironic.

People claim that Obama is about change and new ideas, and yet in his first decision he picks a standard, establishment senator for VP.

People claim that McCain is about sameness and old ideas, and yet in his first decision he picks a new, non-establishment woman for VP.

I can't wait until the Democrats try to claim that Palin is too inexperienced to be VP. The Republicans will simply point out that their young VP candidate has MORE experience than the Dem's presidential candidate.

Jason   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

With all due respect to Governor Palin, this really looks like it's a LOOK I HAVE A FEMALE CANDIDATE I'M PROGRESSIVE decision. McCain wants to talk about experience? Palin only has some city council work and two years of governorship behind her. At least Obama had a decade of state legislature work before his senate career.

And if, heaven forbid, something should happen to McCain (remember that he would be 76 by the end of a first term, should he win), this woman with no Washington experience would have to take over. I don't think she could. She may be a competent governor (at least, I haven't heard of any scandals or anything involving her), but Washington material? I think not.

Seriously, it really, really looks like McCain is simply trying to meet Obama's historic-ness…but when Obama delivers his acceptance speech on the 45th anniversary of I Have a Dream, a governor from the sticks doesn't really compare.

RDS   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

LOL…I know McCain thinks that women aren't that smart, but come on this is kinda condescending to think that any women will do. It's obvioius that people have a deep connection with Hillary. How can you jump on Obama about not being ready to lead and say you will pick someone who is ready to be commander in chief and pick someone younger and even more unexperienced than Obama. The PUMA organization is a ruse their isn't millions. Didn't work for Mondale….aint going to work for you. You just feed this newcomer to the wolves Biden will chew her up and spit her out…Game On

The self-proclaimed hockey mom vs. Joe Biden? Ha ha!!

Does Palin have the experience to step into the Presidency at a moment's notice? I don't think so!

Isn't Palin under investigation in Alaska? What is McCain thinking (or is he)?

Salaam, Lawrence KS   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

what a joke. Biden is still gonna slam Gov Palin in the debate. Beyond a desire to carry Alaska, this is an attempt to help Senator Stevens to retain his seat, and limit a bigger Republican disaster in November.

Calidris   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

So I guess Obama's inexperience is now off the table for the Republicans? Palin's experience is 2 years as governor, yet McCain believes she's ready to take over as president of the U.S. at a moment's notice.

Veterans for Obama and Ex-Republicans for Obama!   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

You just blew it McBush.

How in the world can a woman with 1-1/2 years of experience as Governor, with no experience in national security issues, possibly be picked as a running mate by the oldest man ever to run for President. Is McCain senile, or does he think he'll live forever? What in heck does he think is going to happen if he can't serve? Oh, my God, the Republicans really do want to destroy this country!

MLG   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Great job McCain.

McCain/Palin 08

db   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

one year as governor of a tiny (electorally) state. and before that, a city councilwoman. and the Repubs say obama is inexperienced??? pure hypocrisy.

stick a fork in mccain, he's done.

(and ladies, both mccain and palin are anti-choice, and want to overturn roe v. wade. think about it)

richard j   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

good choice. She has about the same experience as obama. He was a "community advocate" and a senator for a few years. She has been a governor for a few years.

No matter how you look at it governor > senator.

And another difference, she's NOT running for President

Chi4Obama   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

huh?
So what are the requirements for VP these days?

With a resume like Palin's, I think that I could achieve consideration for VP in a couple of years LOL.

Jewell McKenzie   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Young, inexperienced mother of five. What happens if John McCain expires and Sarah Palain becomes our president?? She didn't think she even had a chance to become his V.P. She has way to many things on her plate. Barack/Biden '08

Sad choice. Romney was the right guy to choose.

Sorry, Juan McCain, you just lost my vote. Guess I'm not voting this time since I can't vote for a RINO and I certainly can't vote for the Socialist.

Michael   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

Awesome! Palin is a breath of fresh air!

The difference between Palin and Obama is that Palin is the VP, not running for President. In addition, she has a history of success, not corruption.

McCain/Palin 08!!! Woot!

This women is not Hilary. What experience does she have. Women said over and over again that they voted for Hilary because she was the most experienced? How does this woman compare? no contest. PANDER BEAR is awake and growling. With this pick, McCain says experience doesn't matter. There is no reason to vote for a party that failed americans. END OF STORY.

Melinda Charlotte, NC   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

I was a Hillary Clinton supporter seriously worried about Barack Obama's experience. I know Governor Palin, and I think she is a fantastic choice for Senator McCain. She actually has more executive experience than Senator Obama. I have been wavering on which way to go, and this pick solidifies it for me. Senator McCain is ready to be president, and I can cast my ballot for a woman that I really admire. Senator McCain, you have my vote.

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   August 29th, 2008 10:49 am ET

So, what are her qualifications to the Commander in Chief?

Younger than Obama. So unknown that she is a wildcard. Not even one full term as governor of Alaska.

She hasn't even got any Washington expereience, good or bad. What a stupid choice! Thank you, John McCain!

teddy of orlando   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Sarah Palin has NO FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE. Isn't that the reason John McCain has been saying Obama isn't ready?

If McCain thinks Palin is READY RIGHT NOW, then he is also saying that Obama must also be ready.

Houston, Texas   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

She's no Hillary, this strategy will not work.

Ted   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

No Way. No How. No McCain.

Steve Green   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Smart—-very smart John McCain…..just what we need! Why not just hand it to the Dems?

Kiah   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Downfall McCain. You won't et Hillary's supporters. This unknown small stae Gov. is she ready to lead?

Tim from Buffalo   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

McCain has the audacity to say that Obama isn't qualified after 8 years in the Illinois senate and 3 years in the US Senate then appoints someone younger than Obama with only 2 years as a governer and previous experience in a city council? It's clear that they think they can peel women off of the dems simply by having a woman despite her qualifications.

SHE AIN'T HILLARY   August 29th, 2008 10:48 am ET

OMG what a bad move on McCain's part. Do we even need to have an election?

No surprise here – typical pandering. If women voters fall for this, they deserve the setback McCain would mean for women's rights.

Sounds great for Obama/Biden!!!

Two years of experience, previous job as a mayor of a town with 6,000 people in Nowheresville, Alaska, only 44-years-old, all good news.

Sure she's more attractive than Biden, but Biden will devour her in the debates. I'm sure she has stunning foreign policy credentials!

This is just another female Republican along the lines of Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin and all of the other attractive, inexperienced and naive GOP politicians. If you think this is going to get Clinton voters…well, lol.

Brian   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

This pick does a great service to George H.W. Bush. It makes his choice of Dan Quayle look like a good one.

18 months experience in the smallest state? Next in line to the presidency with a 72 year old (US male life expectency is 75 years)?

This isn't a bad choice. It is incompetent.

EXCELLENT CHOICE!

Hey guys, and gals, instead of saying "who?" and tilting your head, how about doing a little more research for once? In less time she's accomplished more than Barack Obama ever has, and as far as sticking to her principles she has more integrity than Obama, Biden, or even John McCain himself.

Alexis from Ohio   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

She is no Hillary

Cynthia   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Senator McCain chose her to try and bring in the Hilliary Clinton supporters and I think that is an insult (and that might be the wrong word to use but right now I can't think of the right word). What he is missing the fact those women wanted Hilliary. She is only 44 years old and McCain is 72 if somewhere God forbid were to happen to them COULD she handle it – I don't think so. Let's hope that the Democrats win and win handily this time. Our country is in trouble and this is not the time to play game, Senator McCain.

Phil of Colorado   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Awesome. Ironically, she has more "executive managment experience" than McCain, Obama and Biden combined. This infuses an exciting new aspect and certainly will make this a historic election.

hein   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Talking about Obama's lack of experience?! McCain is 72 years old, and is Palin ready to be President? Really, this is a huge risk for them. The experience card is gone, done.

Sandra   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

I'm a Hillary supporter that was going to vote for McCain until NOW!!! Palin as a VP? how in the hell she's going to debate with Joe Biden? is this what you called strong ticket? Now I'm just not voting!!! You blasted Obama in regards of of Experience!!! And now you are putting a women that's been a gov. just a year and a half? and a ex beauty pageant? is she ready to be presiden of UNited States!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A year an half she's been governor!! This sux for me now because I will not VOTE!!!!

Dan   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

This pick shows McCain knows he can only win by dividing the Democrats. Can't wait to see Biden devour her….hilarious

Jackie, Minneapolis MN   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Everyone is going to see through this. Women supported Hillary Clinton because she was an experienced, tough woman. If all women wanted was a female in the White House on top of the ticket, Elizabeth Dole would have gotten the nomination when she ran years ago!

Anonymous   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

The GOP thinks women are emotional and not politically sophisticated enough to see this pick for what it is: blind panic.

They think that women will blindly vote for one of their own than for the candidate that has their best interests in mind.

Also, there goes the inexperience line of attack. This woman has been governor for less than two years, and other than beauty pageants and state trooper scandals, has no other relevant experience.

JIM...TX   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Bizarre choice. Not a smart choice. Palin has minimal experience. Palin will not attract Hillary women with a right wing and socially conservative record.

This is a big mistake. He doesn´t understand that it wasn´t about a woman in office, it was about Hillary. I feel like this choice showcases his lack of understanding. He just lost my potential vote.

Jeffer65   August 29th, 2008 10:47 am ET

So where does she stand on the issues? Did McCain just tick off the real conservatives by picking her? Doesn't sound like she's very experienced. Could be interesting but I think Biden is going clean her clock in the VP debates.

Nuwan Sam   August 29th, 2008 10:46 am ET

John McCain made a risky but a good choice. One goal of this VP pick is to target the "sisterhood of traveling pansuits" who voted for Hillary Clinton. In this election, Obama could have made history in big way with Hillary Clinton as VP but he didn't take that chance. Now McCain is going to make history by having a woman for a VP. I do not know her at all, but she may be able to tap into some of those women who voted for Hillary and not please about Obama not giving her a chance.

A very political pick if there was ever one.
The Repugs must keep in mind that Palin is a heartbeat away from the presidency. Is she ready to serve?

Jimmie, Virginia   August 29th, 2008 10:46 am ET

And to further ad to my previous comment, please look up Sarah Palin. If you don't know about her, you will know about her soon enough. She is a game changer. She has been about change in the state of Alaska. I'm a proud democrat, but Gov. Palin is a GREAT choice.

Frank, Missouri   August 29th, 2008 10:46 am ET

If John McCain thought that Hillary's supporter just wanted a woman – that's bad judgement. Hillary has her support because of who she is and what she stands for – not because she is a woman. The fact that she is a woman was only as (un)significant as Obama being black. So, to pick a woman as VP for political calculation only will not ring home with the Hillary supporters!

La Raza   August 29th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Ok, so McCain's answer … quick grab a woman any woman. This is a slap to all women in the world. She ain't no Hillary and women of the world are not stupid.

Whoa   August 29th, 2008 10:46 am ET

So the republicans go so far as to pander that they choose a woman for the VP pick

you know the only reason he did this was to look good for the election there is no way he is thinking about using this VP pick for anything after the election

Does McCain really think he can pick a woman and try to take Hillary supporters away from the Democrats? Does McCain really think he can chose a first term governor and still use the "Obama's not ready" mantra? Does McCain think America won't learn about Palin's corruption charges?

Thats laughable.

Mark   August 29th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Why would any woman want to support you after what you did to your first wife, John?

Hibitual adulterer who applied for a marriage license in Arizona in order to marry Cindy before his divorce from Carol., his first wife who had been recently crippled in a car accident, was complete.

Nice, John. Women will love you.

Edgar   August 29th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Offcourse he would name a woman. After the speech Obama gave last night, McCain knew the only way he could come back after that would be to get the women vote. McCain cannot win over with his policies because he does not have any to offer, so he has to win with gimmicks, like naming a woman to run with him.

Truth   August 29th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Bad judgment in a hardcore

Carrie Goodeagle Hayden, Idaho   August 29th, 2008 10:45 am ET

He should have picked Paris Hilton, or Brittney Spears. He likes trophy broads doesn't he. So is Sarah the New Trophy VP?

Female Hillary Supporter NOT Interested in Sarah Palin   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Dear CNN

Please know right up front that I will NOT consider Sarah Palin just because she is a woman! If that is why McCain has chosen her, it won't work.

I am a 66-yr old female, retired teacher.

I am not a PUMA, either, but I was not happy with Obama's followers for the way they bashed Hillary during the primaries, or with his "not much message" campaign, and for his wanting Hillary to stop the primary process early…and other things.

Sarah Palin is a Republican….I don't agree with her platform…..so I would not be able to vote for her..or McCain.

Franky   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Sarah Palin?? Isn't she from Alaska?? Hmmm, interesting…

I remember her name was brought up but this seems unusual. Why am I getting a feeling that it was a last minute decision?? But overall, I like Sarah, know some things about her. But I think this a big push to try and lure Hillary's peeps. Hey, they can take her peeps, I don't care, LOL!! I don't know, I gotta look at some things because this just sounds to me it was a last minute deicision or so.

Is not bad, is O.K. But I still find it unusual. I thought he was gonna pick Pawlenty…

Amber   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Palin is very expereienced. So before you start talking, go look at her resume.

HELLO GOVERNOR OF ALASKA!!!

STRONG, STRONG, STRONG TICKET.

Count me in Mrs. Palin!!!

J.C.   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

I hope this isn't true.
I cannot count on Sarah as our commander-in-chief if anything happens to Senator McCain.

Timothy - Brooklyn, NY   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY???????????????????

Nathan Prophet, Raleigh, NC   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

A seemingly shrewd move by the Republicans to get the Hillary vote, but the MAJOR issue is McCain's age and this unknown woman's ability to be President if McCain is incapacitated or worse.

Patrick   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Palin who? What? One of the least populous states… oil rich… and he picks their governor?

Makes no sense…

Zach   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

She will win over SOME of Hillary's supporters. However many of Hillary's supporters supported HILLARY, not just any woman

Tori Ashland OR   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

She is a gun toting pro lifer from Alaska.

It's the economy stupid! I hope this does not cause the HRC supporters to go to her though. We need change and help with the economy. He just proved he won't do jack scrap on healthcare of the economy.

debbie   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Quit whining about experience people, she has more executive experience than Obama and Biden together!

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

An obvious ploy to get disenfranchised Hillary voters.

Brooke in PA   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

John McCain just won the election. Once again, Obama and the DNC blow it.

I'm sure Hillary will get blamed for this too..

As a HRC supporter for McCain and a woman (Pro choice however), I'm thrilled.

Sick & Tired of Nobama   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE ARE GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE!!! TOO BAD NOBAMA, YOU COULD HAVE PICKED HILLARY AND IT WOULD HAVE BEEN YOU BUT YOU ARE TOO DUMB TO REALIZE THAT!!!
HAHAHAHAHA
McCain – Palin 08 YES!!
NOW THAT'S CHANGE WE CAN BELEIVE IN!!!!

Jimmie, Virginia   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Since June I've wondered if she was going to be the choice. Great republican from the state of Alaska. Approval rating above 80%. True conservative. Will definitely appeal to social conservatives, and defected Clinton Supporters. I support Barack Obama, but McCain has made a great choice and made this election ultra competitive.

Yes I Voted   August 29th, 2008 10:44 am ET

lmfao! is this a joke?

Pascal   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

I will love to see her ripped by Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton!

Obama Supporter, FL   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Wait a second…McCain decries Obama's lack of experience, and then chooses a 1st term Governor elected in 2006 to be his running mate??? Absolutely absurd…the Democrats will have a field day with this.

Veterans for Obama   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Oh yea McCain….woman are that naive that they will just vote for ANY woman.

What a loser!

M.B. from Berlin FOR OBAMA   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

WELCOME ON BOARD OF THE SOON SINKING SHIP.

I hope you have a pleasant journey…

Come on, Old McCain believes he get the Hillary-voters???
Well…she's NOT Hillary, and I hope the Hillary-Voters are smart enough to look through this…

By the way the last woman, that was a candidate's VP choice lost…

Good luck Sarah uhm what's her name?

Super delegate NJ   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Great Choice; she is a reformer who will clean up Washington. This choice incapacitates the changemobile.

Deb, Oklahoma   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

The Democrats (Kennedy, Richardson, Pelosi..etc) and the media threw Hillary under the bus and as such, you lost MANY lifelong supporters. I just now got off the fence and will vote Republican> Too bad Dems…you had your chance!

He's a User   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Congrats Ms. Pallin…

Ladies … look at his history … John McCain hasn't cared one IOTA about women or issues that matter to them … until he needed one politically …

He's like a no good husband or boyfriend that is selfish … only politically

Ohio Observer   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

ha ha ha ha

She's no Hillary

LOL @ the desperate GOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl from MI   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Palin will almost as good of a choice as Dan Quayle!!! She brings absolutely nothing to the race besides being a woman and a GOP puppet. Lame McCain is trying to capitalize on her being a woman VP since Obama didn't choose Hillary.

Newsflash: Hillary voters ARE NOT going to go for another woman VP… they only want Hillary!! Duh!!!

WAKE UP, AMERICA!! VOTE SMART…. NOT SENILE!!!

Lame pandering   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

What a transparent attempt to pander to the female vote, especially from a guy who consistently votes against equal pay for women.

He just doomed his own ticket.

TESAP:SAVANNAH, GA   August 29th, 2008 10:43 am ET

Sen. McCain, please tell me how you can say Obama has no experience when Sarah might need to step into your role if you win. I am talking about age, Mr. McCain

-Republican.

Ray from CA   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Please, tell me this is wrong!

Hopefully Hillary will be able to get angry that she might not be the first woman

debbie   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

McCain 08 Hillary 12

Former Puma   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

No Way no how no McCain.

Mercedes   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

This will not change my mind at all. I may a female but Obama has my vote. Never heard of her at all. At least no one can say they didn't know who Sen. Obama was before this elections.

Ex-mod-GOP for Obama   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

I think this is a disaster for John McCain. Did he actually think that Sen. Clinton's supporters are so dumb they wouldn't realize they were being pandered to?

Fred   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

She isn't Hillary

Dandelion.   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Well I guess there goes the inexperienced argument. This woman is no Hillary, and I hope people realize that.

Accountant Guy   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Awesome!! Game Over Republicans!!

Obama/Biden '08

Zach   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Palin!? Please, this must be a joke. McCain spends all his time bashing Obama on his "lack of experience"…and his likely VP pick is even LESS EXPERIENCED! Talk about a hypocrite…

This just in…. Obama has clinched this election

United Not Divided   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Say WHAT? hahahahahahah OMG I can't take it. If you supported Hillary and think that she is going to be your new champion, you have a new thing coming. Oh I can't take it I'm laughing so hard.
Mr. Obvious?

Obama 08

s.b.   August 29th, 2008 10:42 am ET

Way to go! Well done. A master stoke and so much better done than Obama's lackluster and leaked choice. What a great indication of who should be POTUS. McCain-Palin '08

diane08   August 29th, 2008 10:41 am ET

WHO???????????????

NoMcSame   August 29th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Just go grab any woman you can find and think that she will help you get into office. What a joke. The whole ReThuglican Party is a joke. They can't talk about ISSUES at all because they are on the wrong side of most of them. The republican party is WEAK and the tricks are OLD so they have nothing else to talk about. The republicans have an OLD DRIED UP OLD man running for president of this country and the people don't want him. Ronald the Raygun could not come out of the grave to help McSame win this thing.
