Biden and Obama campaigned in Ohio Sunday.
Biden and Obama campaigned in Ohio Sunday.

TOLEDO, Ohio (CNN) – Joe Biden says there are obvious differences between himself and fellow vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but they’re not just on policy. She’s good-looking.

“There’s a gigantic difference between John McCain and Barack Obama and between me and I suspect my vice presidential opponent,” Biden said at an outdoor rally Sunday, getting ready to hit the GOP ticket for their economic policies.

“She’s good-looking,” he quipped.

“You are gorgeous!” a female supporter in the audience shouted out. Biden asked her to repeat it into the microphone so his wife at home would hear.

“I haven’t heard that in a long, long, long time,” Biden said as the audience laughed. “Being around this lean young-looking guy is making me feel pretty old, you know what I mean? I thought I was in pretty good shape until I hung out with this guy.”

At the rooftop rally, both Biden and Obama commented on Palin for the first time without prompting from reporters. Obama joked he’s now considering going to Palin’s home state of Alaska – the only state he says he hasn’t visited – but chose to focus his comments on her position on equal pay for women.

“John McCain’s new VP nominee seems like a very engaging person, a nice person. But I’ve got to say, she’s opposed - like John McCain is - to equal pay for equal work. That doesn’t make much sense to me.”

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella called Obama's comments a disgrace and "an absurd accusation."

Obama later made sure his running mate realizes he's good-looking as well.

“You see, she thinks you’re gorgeous too Joe,” said Obama. “Jill goes back home and look what happens!”

“This is worth the run,” responded Biden.

Biden is OK, don't pick on the man, however, our family's voting McCain/Palin08

Clevelander   August 31st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Why can't Senator Biden say Sarah Palin is good looking? That's a true statement! If you are a man who is straight and you don't think she is good looking, there is something wrong with your vision or your brain.

Stop all the silly attacks on a good public servant. If you think a statement like this is offensive, you are either too stupid to understand the beauty scale or you are just a GOP attack machine.

If this is the game that GOP is interested in playing, why don't you denounce all that stupid things that Bush has said or done for this country. We are hurting badly here in Ohio. Why doesn't GOP do something?

NO MORE GOP 08

Biden is s senator that has made a career out of sitting in committee meetings in the senate, towing the party line, and attacking the other party. Obama is the of he same mold–just a new kid on the block .The fact is, Palin has more executive experience than either of them combined! It also appears she has a life experience (hunting, fishing, raising kids, reforming the world around her) that does circles around either of these bureaucrats. They need to get a life!

Josh   August 31st, 2008 8:36 pm ET

These guys are joking around about her looks and at least from this article don't appear to attack her on anything with actual merit. They had better be careful they don't further offend the women in their party with cruddy comments like these.
I know there are some out there saying "equal pay for equal work is an issue with substance," but seriously, do you actually believe this woman believes what they're saying she does regarding women's rights in the workplace? If anyone is going to believe women should get paid less it will be some of the three men running for office.

Juan Grain   August 31st, 2008 8:35 pm ET

We love you Joe! Don't worry Palin will be jiffy-pop vetted and McCain is already getting grief for his poor judjement on his first real decision. He is a maverick alright, one that has been roped & tied and branded with the letter P, P for Palin by the Rush Rove Neo-con gang! What a sad way to end your carrer Juan McPlain. You should have switched parties when you cried to Reid about the treatment the lat time.

Rob Shore   August 31st, 2008 8:35 pm ET

Thank God there is finally someone on any ticket who has some Executive government leadership experience. Governor Palin has more Executive experience than Obama, Biden, HR Clinton and McCain combined.

There is a reason why America rarely elects Senators to the highest office, it comes down to a lack of real experience. I'm sure Barry, Joe and John did great jobs running their Senate office staffs. That doesn't quite measure up to running a State and acting as the Commander of the militia in that State. John McCain recognized he needed the help.

I'm quite comfortable with a woman who can shoot straight and clings to her gun, occupying the Blair House and has not sold her soul to the DC elite. She scares the hell out of the Beltway Bandits.

MD in Oklahoma   August 31st, 2008 8:34 pm ET

When Palin gave her speech, I thought it was immature for her to say how she is still with the same man she met in high school vs saying I am proud to have been married to Todd for x number of years.

I also thought she was going to mention Shirley Chisholm in her speech. I wonder why she failed to mention her name.

LOLOLOL CNN the ONLY Blog to INCLUDE FOX that has failed to allow ONE story of the DOZENS about Palin to show up. She is falling apart and it has been barely 48 hours. CNN you can Censor all you want like you do for Mccain everyday but like me HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of people have left CNN behind and get our news elswhere.

I know you won't post this..CNN lost its backbone as soon as Hillary Lost to Obama, now it is ANYONE BUT OBAMA CNN!!!

Oh yeah I know you won't post this, that is why I have already posted it ( And it was Published) on FOX, HUFFPO, MSNBC about half a dozen other blogs.

We used to talk about CNN arond the office now we just talk about how CNN Sold out.

Biden also said Obama was good looking and thats not the headline.

OBAMA WAS ELECTED PALIN WAS SELECTED   August 31st, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Guess I have to keep posting this until all you dittoheads get the difference. Even if you think that a Harvard law degree in constitutional law is equal to a B.S in journalism from Idaho as "experience" Obama was ELECTED NOT SELECTED by one angry old desperate man willing to risk the future of 300 million Americans by throwing them under the Straight Talk Express(I am suprised I stil type those 3 words without giggling). That is what most thinking people are concerned about is McCrypt 's obvious mental decay with this "judgment" selection. When people are ELECTED then the people have a say in the SELECTION. It may be foreign concept to Republicans but it is called Democracy, you can Google it for the definition.

So, hold onto the tobbacky can as this may rock your world, but some folks do NOT think Rush is smart and just because he thinks she is a "babe" may qualify her as VP material in that single functioning brain cell that dittoheads seem to have in common, but about 200 million of us will actually make a decision by ourselves.

I know you felt the earth wobble on it's axis by me speaking such heresy but there is a whole world outside of talk radio!

It is truly unfortunate that you Democrats have such nasty comments.
And the comments of Pdixon I will address by saying when you choose abortion it is not your body but that of a child, so you are wrong, it is not your choice. And you know what, if you are pro abortion we don't need your vote. You know where you can take your nasty comments and your pro abortion views.

Tracey   August 31st, 2008 8:32 pm ET

I rest my case! The republican bloggers were still unable to answer the question of appropriate vetting of this woman to the American people. John claims to have love for this country! That is his campaign slogan, "Country First." He did not think about this country when he made this reckless decision. He is now going to "introduce" her to the American people, 60+days before the election! Wow! This is not acceptable! This is like, entrusting your new next door neighbor who just move into your neighborhood yesterday, to babysit your children while you go out. You can twist this decision how ever way you choose, but you know, it is reckless!

Senator Biden is neither sexist nor patronizing; he just suffers from the good old foot in the mouth affliction!!

BTW, some of the comments seem to suggest that somehow Palin invited Biden's comments by being a beautyqueen runner up. How interesting??!!

People keep talking about executive experience…….excately what do you call Obama manageing the best political machine ever? He has never ran out of money, there is no drama and it spreads across the United States.

It's a good thing this innocent statement was so overblown because it has made it perfectly clear why McCain picked her.

you mean a woman cannot be intelligent and good looking.
the later would be the sexist outlook.

Jay   August 31st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Rudy, you know that Biden is just as 'self-controlled' as McCain. Actually he's more self-controlled. He never left his wife for other women. He never selectively chose beauty queens to be by his side. And if he expressed his temper, i.e. on Bush' comments during a visit to the Knesset, it was appropriate. I said the same thing about dubya. McCain would be out of control if given the chance. He and Palin are Pro Life "and" Pro Dumb War ….. don't forget…. based on lies.

Secondly, despite her 'executive experience', her resume' lists a B.S. in journalism with minor in political science. Both Biden and Obama have J.D.'s.

Gerald Layne   August 31st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

I wonder if Palin will be Biden's weakness. For one, he speaks from the hip in a very political correct media environment. She has excutive budget balnce experience. This election just got exciting.

Paul   August 31st, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Biden makes a self-depricating comment and 1) it becomes a CNN headline; and 2) fodder for fools waiting to jump on any non-issue to avoid discussing what really matters.

Disgraceful.

Bob, Michigan   August 31st, 2008 7:41 pm ET

@ comment by interesting at 7:21. Yes it's interesting that you call Biden sexist and then go on to call Obama, "boy". I guess that makes you a racist.

fixthebroken   August 31st, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Any objective person will know that Joe Biden is being self-deprecating. I hope America is not that stupid to think otherwise.

Also, I am so tired about hearing that Palin is more experienced than Obama, and Obama is #1 on the ticket…..

First, it is not true. Palin has more executive office experience. But Obama has more overall political experience than Palin.

Secondly, Obama was *elected by millions of American voters* to be #1 on top of the ticket. He wasn't chosen by a singular person. Palin was *chosen by John McCain in his first executive decision* to be his running mate.

Compare apples to apples here people — compare Palin and Biden, or Obama and McCain. But please, don't undermine my intelligence by comparing Palin to Obama and making misleading statements about experience!

…and p.s. JCH Philly Democrat, Tim Kaine has more overall experience than Palin by a long shot. Jeez, bring some facts here people.

John   August 31st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Biden best be careful what he says about her…People will perceive him as anti-female if he's not…They attacked Hillary and didn't get attacked a whole lot, but this woman is much more feminine than Hillary, who is perceived as a rather hard core politician

Lourdes   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Oh, please. It's not sexist to say a woman is good looking. Lots of people in the press say Obama is good looking and that's not sexist (AND publish pictures of him in a bathing suit…they could never get away with doing that with a female political candidate!) He didn't call her a degrading name or anything close. it's just the same as when he says Barack is better looking than him. I'm a feminist myself, but really, women do nothing for our cause by getting worked up over trivialities like this.

It's FAR MORE SEXIST for McCain to think that he can oppose women voters by putting an unqualified woman up for VP and think that she holds a CANDLE to a woman like Hillary. Believing women candidates are interchangeable…. that's REAL sexism. The dangerous kind.

Kris   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Jeez — how are these publicans going to react when Biden starts commenting about her RECORD??? Calling someone who chose to be a beauty pagent contestant good looking is sexist? (Who traded on appearance first? Hmmmm . . . whenever it's convenient.) She's no longer running for "Miss Congeniality," y'know . . .

Dimslie   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Yes, but, is she "clean and well spoken"?

Rudy   August 31st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Biden's behavior cannot be controlled and as an American seeking the Vice President of the USA he is a disgrace not only to women but the men who have deep respect for women — and Obama stands by and smiles. It is obvious that Biden and Obama are concerned of Palin's entrance into this race. It highlights the lack of experience of Obama when the Vice President candidate of the other party has more experience as a chief executive than the Presidential nominee of the Democratic party — and this lack of executive experience is so obvious. Obama's time in the U.S. Senate has been spent mostly campaigning — at taxpayers expense. He has no executive experience and no international experience. In fact Palin has more executive experience than all the three candidates put together. So Obama and Biden be careful, you have already raise an issue that will eventually be your undoing, especially when the American voters realize that your rhetoric has no substance. Yes, it is the popcorn theory — much noise but little substance.

Independent turn O/B ticket   August 31st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Republicans & Democrats.
Republicans can pretend to be happy about Palin even though they don't know him. Republicans have succeded in actually brain watching people with fear. Macain with experience has been wrong with judgement especially in areas where he is supposed to be good-Foreign policy. Yet——-
And if Republicans are coming up with executive experience. What they are actually saying is that Palin has more experience than Macain who has only senate experience as Obama. Ignorance is a desease.
Republicans are good in putting fear in people.
Democrats lifts people up with positive encouragement.
And for those who thinks that there is no money to do what Obama is proposing, Republicants have always said no money for health care but we can afford to pay 10b monthly in Iran. Where is common sense. I wil rather take a chance on Obama than same 8 yrs of experience of abuse of power.
Independent for Obama.

This debate is hilarious. It would be one thing if Joe Biden was a greasy, ugly sleaze ball and said what he said — but he is extremely good looking himself, and surely knows that — so it's obvious he was just horsing around harmlessly. Palin IS good looking, so is Biden, so is Obama. Even McCain isn't painful to look at. So at least we don't have any victims of the ugly stick running around upsetting our electoral process with their gnarliness. What a relief that is. Biden's record on women's rights is equal to the best of them and puts most to shame. Give me a break. As a heart-broken Hillary supporter, I admit that I was looking for a reason to go to the other side, and abruptly stopped all thoughts of it when Biden was announced as the V.P. candidate. My sticking point was experience, and Biden brings it in spades. Can't vote against Joe Biden. Putting him on the ticket is the smartest thing Obama could have done. Hillary voters are not going to vote for McCain-Palin just because Palin is a woman. To us, unlike with the sexists who hate her, it's not about gender. And we love Joe Biden. Love him.

potter   August 31st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Dem's VP attacking dog shows its true color with one added label - sexist! Wondering if he thinks that having been sitting in a Senator's seat for a while he can get away with this. This will not help Mr O get the undecided votes he lost.

Hanky   August 31st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Wake up America!!!
Please learn the difference between taking a pot-shot at oneself than a sexist remark.
McCain calculated that many women would side with Sarah Palin just because she is a woman. I think admiration is in order, but do you want to vote for a woman who could become our next president with so little NATIONAL experience?
She is residing over a state that has less people than the city of Jacksonville, Florida. 1 1/2 years executive experience means little to me over such a small state and no NATIONAL political experience.
Obama has eight years of Chicago legislative experience and four years of national political experience, not to mention that he sees and understand Washington and picked an experienced running mate who can take over seamlessly just in case.
This VP has no foreign policy experience, no national domestic policy experience and has blown up her thin resume.
Abraham Lincoln had the same amount of experience as Barack before taking office, but his judgment was eerily similar.
As far as plans, in many ways McCain is too vague and he supported the war in Iraq and lacked the necessary vision Obama has.
Obama has been running an excellent campaign and tried to be civil. His campaign, many consider one of the best ever run. That goes to jugdment and decision making.
While McCain has shown bipartisan tendencies in the past, his straight talk, maverick ways that endeared him to so many is absent.
His campaign has represented much of what he really is not, until that pick of Palin, which seemed like desperation and pandering.
I understand it has high risk, high reward, but is too dangerous to put our country in such hands if necessary.

Sacha   August 31st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Being an outsider from Canada, although my mother is American, I follow the news closely. I love my country of Canada as much and as furiously as do Americans love theirs. My Grandparents were strong Democrats, and being of Irish descent loved JFK and RFK, but following the Blog’s and the messages that are placed for everyone, all I seem to read is the hate the people show towards either candidate and supporters. The worst seem to be from those that support Obama/ Biden. Maybe it is the fear that there is a chance that a once in a lifetime opportunity for an African American to hold the most powerful office in the world could slip away. All the name calling and put-downs only serve to awaken those Republicans who may not have taken the time to vote last time and to get out this election.
I think everyone would be better off if you forget that someone is black or white, was rich or poor, male or female, young or old, but rather they are “Americans” who care for the country, and believe they can help make it better. Listen to the solutions to questions put forth, not the spiels and jargon which most politicians hand out. It is easy to say "I have a plan" but what you need to hear is what is the plan is in detail. I think Biden as usual was way of line with is comments on Palin, I found then to border on sexist and he should apologize immediately. These are the things that can go to hurt Obama's chance.
Stop the hate mongering and name calling, instead of putting down the opponent try just praising yours. Be the bigger person as they say.

A Canadian prospective but as your hearts do declare, “God bless America” and good luck.

Sincerely
Joe H

First of all, I will be voting for Obama/Biden without a doubt. Secondly, the choice of Palin, a former beauty queen is hardly a surprise given McCain's history. Third, it is my belief that Hurrican Gustav is the answer to Dr. James Dobson's prayers for "unspeakable rain" intended for Obama's speech. Now sadly it comes to New Orleans instead of St. Paul for the RNC opening.

MVinAZ   August 31st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

McCain, with his pick of Palin, has turned this campaign into a joke. I can't imagine Palin didn't see all this criticism coming. Thus, she offered herself up as a GOP sacrifice, a woman willing to be used and abused. Republicans can't possibly believe she is capable of running this country. My goodness. Mayor of a town of fewer than 10,000 people? I live in a town of 20,000 or so. Could our Mayor be President? It's absurd. And the notion that her time in public office has somehow lent itself to making her a more experienced candidate than Obama is even more absurd.

Whether the motivation for choosing Palin was simply foolish or calculated AND foolish, it trivializes the importance of the issues our country faces.

Any woman who enters herself into a beauty contest isn't in a position to complain about someone calling them pretty, unless she wants to be called a hypocrite.

She's a female version of George W Bush, just not a complete idiot. She however is one of these crazy religious nut cases who see Jesus on a potato chip or a moth wing.

She's pretty all right, pretty scary!

Charlotte   August 31st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Sarah doesn't pretend to be qualified on foriegn affairs at this point in time. From what I've heard about her she is a quick study. McCain is the foreign affairs expert. What she adds to the ticket is the change in Washington, Obama keeps preaching about. He talks of change and then selects one of the longest serving Senators in the Senate. I like Biden, preferred Hillary though. Obama chose Biden to bolster his lack of experience. He chose Biden and ignored half of the democrats, not good judgement if you ask me. Sarah impresses me as a person who will be dedicated and she doesn't need a teleprompter when she speaks. Oh, and she is attractive and smart.

So many people here are concerned that Palin is not ready to take over for McCain if something happened to him, yet she has more executive experience than Obama. Such stupid people in this country. RealDeal   August 31st, 2008 7:15 pm ET

I'm shocked and appalled McCain chose this person as his VP. McCain is 72 years old. He seems mentally confused, disorganized, and forgetful. He has an undisclosed psychiatric history and very serious medical problems. It is very, very unlikely, if elected, he would finish his first term. This means that his VP nominee, Palin who attended Hawaii Pacific College 1 year in 1982, transferred to North Idaho College for 1983-1984 school year, transferred to the University of Idaho in fall of 1984 and graduated from there with a journalism degree in 1987. Notice it took her five years to get a Bachelor's degree.

McCain's VP choice would be president of the Senate. How does that make sense when she has no national or foreign policy experience? That means a POW with no foreign policy experience and a VP with no foreign policy experience would be running our country. And taking on state legislators is the not the same as taking on US Congress. At that level alliances are very, very complex.

But more importantly, McCain has confused Obama's outstanding leadership skills with celebrity. He doesn't get it. Obama is not popular just because he's an extraorinary orator. He's popular because his oratory is backed by his policies and his actions.

Given McCain's age, medical problems, and his mental status, it shows his reckless disregard for America in choosing such a person as his nominee. Just totally bizarre and crazy.

This statement was hardly sexist or chauvinistic. It was complimentary, not demeaning in anyway. It would have been sexist if one of them had said that her looks were all she brought to the Republican ticket. I hope Palin herself isn't as prickly as some of those commenting on this. She's in the big league of politics now and better be able to take shots like that because she's going to get far worse over the next few weeks; this isn't about her or her looks or anything else, it's about us.

It is a fact - she is a beautiful woman. She entered pagents for crying out loud! Obviously she did that because she knows that she's beautiful.

Biden merely stated the obvious!

Rick   August 31st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

t least the GOP inexperience isn;t at the top of the ticket. Besides, at least Palin has run something - has executive branch experience. Obama has none of it.

Lee from FL   August 31st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

CNN is trying to give this story some legs to discredit Mr.Biden

Shame on you CNN!!!!

She might be good looking.

But she is not prepared to take over for McCain, if somethng were to happen to him.

McPanderer   August 31st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

This ain't American Idol, folks. McCain nominated someone with zero foreign policy experience to be a heartbeat away from the front lines of decision-making against the terrorists. Does this make you feel any safer?

JiminAtlanta   August 31st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

If they captured all the air that Obama and Biden spew, we could all heat our homes this winter.

Michael   August 31st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

What Biden said about Palin being good looking was an arrogant sexist, male superiority comment. Explains totaly what happened to Hillary. Democrats just pretend to support women to get their votes.
What Biden said will be in an Republican attack ad comming your way soon.

CNN needs something else to cover aside from the hurricane now that the RNC is being scaled back.

Take it easy on CNN, everybody, it's the best they can do! Or is it?

Daggone In NC   August 31st, 2008 7:09 pm ET

I agree, she is good-looking. But more importantly she seems like a good person and I agree with her views.

Becky   August 31st, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh says she cooks a mean moose stew and shes a babe….If she looked like Janet Reno and Joe said that then it would be sexist…But she is really pretty and she should take that as a compliment.

c'mon people.   August 31st, 2008 7:09 pm ET

TerrifiedInVegas   August 31st, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Eight sitting presidents have died in office. That's ONE in FIVE!

Now McCain - a 72-year-old, four-time cancer survivor - wants us to risk having Miss Alaska with her finger on The Button?!?!

Palin was picked out of right-wing pandering, tokenism and desperation. Women of America, please don't fall for this shameless ploy. She has two X chromosomes but she ain't no Hillary, she’s not even a Kay Bailey Hutchinson or another *qualified* Rep. Female. (And, in fairness, there are several.)

I guess McCain wasn’t satisfied ditching his first wife on her death bed and gold-digging for a trophy wife, now he’s got himself a trophy VP as well. What character this guy has! (Wait for it… insert the GOP playing the POW-card here.)

Ironic, isn’t it that McCain is always claiming that Obama would rather lose a war to win an election and then he pulls this irresponsible stunt ?!?!

Nicolette   August 31st, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Am I the only person disgusted and offended that Palin continues to have a discussion about "choosing" to keep her child who has down syndrome. Does this mean that she actually thought about having an abortion? I believe that even having these thoughts would make her a hypocrite. You have to question her values as she continues to use this child as political gain.

There are many pro-choice women that have made the same decision to give birth and raise a child with down syndrome. I find this argument appalling and offensive.

Mauri   August 31st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Well, well, well….my take on this is vastly different. These two people make me sick, and I'm not talking about Senator McCain and Governor Palin. With reference to the stupid, put-down remarks of both Dem candidates, I say at least John McCain does not feel threatened at having a woman campaigning at his side. Poor Hillary, you never had a chance with these two sexist rebrobates. After this, I'm even more proud to join the host of Hillary women who for sure will vote for McCain/Palin. To Joe (Gorgeous) Biden and Barack (the chosen one) I ask what will President Merckel of Germany say when she hears your remarks directed to the only woman in the race. Do I hear an apology coming down?

Mike In Gboro   August 31st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Tom as for Palin getting the female vote because Obama is getting the black vote, speaks volumes about your character.

Here is the rundown on the black communities voting history: Mondale=87% BV (Black Vote) Clinton=91 and 94% respectively (both more than Obama) Gore=90% and Kerry=88%.

So unlike so many other factions in this country blacks vote their party and economic and social interests, so Sen. Clinton would have been receiving the same support had she been the nominee.

Your suugestion reeks of sexism and racism, enlighten yourself.

Tracey   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

People, let's not focus on this trival crap! Focus on this country and the risk that we are all going to be in if McSane is elected President. I don't think you are going to locate "shady" dealings in her background. by Ken, Virginia

-She is under 'ethics' investigation now … huh? How could you say you will not find shady dealings. The calls came from 'her' house eventhough she says her husband made them and she had no knowledge … And now everyone wants to say it's ok because her ex-brother in law was a drunk suspected of child abuse … If that was the case, let the cops and the judicial system handle .. for the governor to apply pressure is still wrong no matter how good her intentions were … So there is 'shade' in Palins past/present/future

paul   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

PEOPLE, PLEASE! Gov Palin is a woman, a mother, a wife and a well respected governor in a state truly run by men! Give her more respect than what it seems to be right now. Jokes as subtle as "she's good looking" only go back to the little old sexist joke about the pretty office worker who is just there to make the guys happy.

How dare Obama or even Biden talk about her supposed lack of experience and HOW DARE CNN make such a big deal out of it when they have YET to make the same big deal about OBAMA!!! If we are to discuss her 'lack of experience' then let the conversation contain Obama as well.

We must remember that McCain will leave office after his run as president by walking abroad the presidential helicopter himself like many other presidents. So Palin will not have to worry too much about being president until her TRUE time comes. Now Obama, well, he has to take a training course if he is elected before he gets behind the big desk.

McLackofJudgment or McPanderer, You Decide   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

McCain is more concerned with politics than America's safety, if he thinks Palin is qualified to look Putin in the eye.

thenewscoverage   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Ken: you said that 'I don't think you are going to locate "shady" dealings in her background.' So you are not aware that she is currently being investigated for pushing to have her brother in law fired while he was going thru a messy divorce with Gov Palin's sister? She was also whole heatedly endorsed by the corrupt Ted Stevens. I have video proof of both!

But you know what, she did do some serious, hard hitting reform work. So much so that she all but lost the Republican parties support in her first year; she has less then two years in office btw

There are good things and bad things about Sarah Palin, and IMHO, the bad far outweigh the good. I think Huckabee would have been a far better choice for McCain's ticket. He is also an outsider, has strong religious ties and is proved to be very charismatic and capable of running a good campaign on a tight budget.

Polar bear cub   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Palin = dead polar bears.

McCain = invading Iran.

Obama = lying politician.

Biden = loose cannon.

I'd rather have a liar and someone who foam at the mouth before I'd ever support a ticket with PALIN on it. She conserves wildlife life like a jam maker conserves strawberries.

mamacoo   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

WOW !!! All the comments made by the right wing about Senator Clinton and even Palin calling her a whiner and the Republicans want to start screaming and whining about Senator Biden's remarks. Even people in her own party have talked about her looks and that she was a beauty pageant winner.

GARedNeck   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

I guess when people jump on you for everything you say, and can't jump on you for what you've done, you must be doing something right.

So what if red-blooded men think she's a hottie! It's just a statement, like "Mission Accomplished", which according to the GOP didn't mean a thing.

anti-enviroment

oh well, mccain likes them young and attractive, perhaps palin and cindy and pose together at the next buffalo chip bikini contest.

If you are a female and play in politics. Then you are fair game. You want equal pay. Then take the equal bashing that goes along with politic.

Don't look for your female side to be respected. If you are running for the same office as a male. I'm so sick of you females with this garbage.

Now all of a sudden, Gov. Palin is on the GOP ticket and they want to change Washington. Today I watch her speech. The supporter was chating. Yes we can, how funny, but they will say BO is not ready to lead. Guess what. Bush is following BO and now McCopy is following
BO. My question to the American people. Who is the leader? Can't guess. Answer Barack Obama.

Gov. Palin don't even come close to Hillary!

Oh and I'm female.

YakRob   August 31st, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Keep up the sexist attacks and watch the women flock to McCain/Palin. Oh wait, they already are. I really love how Obamaphiles are now so concerned about women's rights, when during the primaries they had no problem with his and media's sexist and misogynist attacks against Senator Clinton and her women supporters. None of you are fooling anyone with your faux concern.

Go back to genuflecting before your god and leave women's rights to those who actually care about them.

Republicrats   August 31st, 2008 6:58 pm ET

This is news worthy? I still don't know anything about what either campaign wants to do. I mean I know Obama wants to change something and McCain doesn't want to leave Iraq. But besides that, it is all politics as usual. The same rehash from every election I can remember… Republicans are against abortion, Democrats are for it. The Democrats are for Gay Marriage, Republicans are against it. It doesn't matter who wins, nothing is going to change. Why bother? I had a good job through Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, and Bush Jr. I highly doubt either of these guys is going to make much of a difference. You want change, start voting Green, Libertarian, Reform, Independent, anything but the sos. We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result! Quit being sheep for your party.

Cynthia   August 31st, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I've got the perfect postion for Palin - if Senator Stevens doesn't run again she would be perfect . The Vice Presidency is not a good position for her and Senator McCain is showing all of us what a risky President he would make.

jessic-fl   August 31st, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I was terribly sad when Hillary did not win the nomination. I was really undecided on who I was going to vote for. After listening to her speech and what she had to say , I am behind Barack Obama. If Hillary stands behind him, I trust her judgement. I am tired of all this nonsense. I have a family. I have children I have to think about. It really does not matter who is pretty or ugly or black or white or purple for all that matters is we get a candidate that will help our country get back on track. There is too much at stake here to worry over little things. Actually, I am a 40 year old female and I said the same thing when I saw her. She is really pretty. I am not sexist. It is an obervation. She is on tv. We all looked at her. How many people thought that? It boils down to the fact that if you really believed in Hillary —trust her judgement. She has spent more time with Barack Obama than you or I have. If she trusts that he will lead us then so do I.
It is because of Hillary that I support Barack Obama. She swayed my vote.

Greg FL.   August 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Let's not start accusing Biden of being sexist. It wasn't what he meant and everyone knows it. You want sexist? Lets talk about McCain calling his wife the c word and in front of reporters on top of that. It makes me believe he says worse behind closed doors. So lets put these things into perspective and not get all crazy over this comment.

Chris @ ASU   August 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Wow…are you people serious? Do any of the woman in this crowd who thinks that Biden's comment was "sexist" have any lives at all? As if any woman wouldn't feel good after such a compliment. Besides it was a compliment from one party to another and you republicans are trying to use that against him? Sounds kind of pathetic and desperate to me. Oh and thank you so much CNN for creating drama on something so non-issue (that's the really pathetic part).

Daryl   August 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Sen Biden went to the President Clinton Camp of Democratic leadership and it involves the patronizing and objectifing of women.

I cannot believe that the Democrats look so fondly on the Clinton years, he threw politics and women in politcs back about a decade with his adulterous ways, as a man if you cannot control your mouth or other parts of your anatomy then you really need to get out of politics because we are sick of it being a SOP for a political candidate or office holder to be a pig.

If you want the scandel ridden Clinton years back then be sure to vote Democrat, if your argument is Obama is different look at his running mate then realize you just falsified your McCain is Bush argument because apparently the man running does make the difference.

I remember when the liberal media tried to brand McCain as a womanizer while their party struggles now under the Edwards scandal. This is the party of no social values and no responsibility for their actions. That is not a party I want in charge of the country.

If at this point you still want to vote republic after Macain has indicated that, There is no good republican left in the senate you must be one of the 10% who is so scared of the 90% change Obama brings with him.
As far as Biden comments, most of them in the government have hardly met this woman just like most of us except Alaskans. So her looks is all we know at this point can be true ( that is without plastics).
CNN please stop making headlines of irrelevant issues. This is a crucial time in this country so please educate voters on the candidates and issues. Untill the convention most people hear about Obama raising taxes without knowing who will be affected by his taxes vs Macains'. You can help make this country better. thx.

Let me quote my 28 year old daughter:

"How stupid does McCain think we women who voted for Hillary are anyway? He picks a woman who stands for everything that Hillary most of her supporters oppose and then he thinks we will vote for her just because she's a woman? That's the most patronizing, insulting thing he could have done. Maybe some shallow men will vote for her because she is a beauty queen, but any woman with a brain will see this for what it is: a cheap political trick.

I would add that this pick proves that McCain puts politics above country, I don't care what his slogan says. Does anyone in their right mind think he picked her because he thought she would add value to solving the military and economic challenges facing this country? If so, send me an e-mail because I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.

How is saying that someone is good looking sexist?

Lauren   August 31st, 2008 6:50 pm ET

As if we didn't know that McCain picked Palin entirely for her gender. He meets her once, he makes sure that she fits in with his campaign, and he prays like hell that women will be dumb enough to vote for a woman because she's a woman and not because it's a good ticket.

I won't vote for Palin. I wouldn't vote for Condi or for Anne Coulter, even if they were running for president. I'd rather have a good president/VP than have a historic woman in the White House.

Hillary would have been great. But I'm not going to compromise WHY I was voting for her just to see a woman in VP (or President if McCain kicks it). I can't believe that other Hillary supporters don't see that McCain is making a lame, sexist bid for their vote. And that Palin is everything that Hillary wasn't . . . in a bad way!

Is O-blah-blah ready handle it — if something should happen to Biden?

An Independent female voter in Tucson, AZ   August 31st, 2008 6:49 pm ET

On several occasions, Sen. John McCain has joked that the two key responsibilities of a VP is to break tie votes in the Senate and “check on the President’s health everyday.” Given his propensity for beauty queens, recall his first wife Carol was a beauty queen/model and Cindy was a junior rodeo queen, he has selected a former “Miss Congeniality” for the nation’s number two spot—a good example of his decision-marking processes and an illustration of how he puts the “country first” given his age, bouts with melanoma, and the fact the current administration has us involved in two wars. No matter how “good-looking” Gov. Sarah Palin is, let’s hope she will at least grasp the functions of the office, she previously thought it “unproductive” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dwzk3g-lB0), before the upcoming VP debates with Sen. Joe Biden.

Accomplishments: No one needs to tell you Palin's and Obama's accomplishements. They are both posted on their respective websites. He' austhored legislation, she has executive experience, etc etc … so can the accomplishments. Read for yourself. Now as far as sexism….that is stupid. Biden poked fun at himself. So rather you vote Barack or McCain, do your research and stop with the stupidity. It is really unbecoming of intelligent Americans be you PUMA, Obama supporter, Mc supporter, etc … go READ about them .. then decide

As a woman, I am more than content with Sarah Palin's stand on "women's issues." I cannot understand how anyone can say that all American women think and vote alike. It's demeaning. Regardless of whether one is Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, Communist, whatever, ALL WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT!

No one person speaks for me, but if there is a candidate who seems to share many of the values and beliefs I hold dear, I am content to support that candidate, no matter the gender or race. I will not support anyone based upon either gender or race. To do so would be the most sexist, racist statement I could ever make. I would also be a very stupid voter.

I am not stupid and should I vote for McCain/Palin, it would not be an indication that I would vote for a woman at any cost (I'm sorry, but I simply cannot force myself to use the same misspellings and grammatical errors I have seen in previous posts), nor would it be an indication that I do not support "women's issues." I am a strong, intelligent, independent woman, and I have every right to believe and vote as I choose.

I am more than tired of hearing and reading that if I am pro-life, I am anti-abortion, and I am a narrow-minded idiot. What if based my pro-life opinions on having experienced unabated abortion and decided that it was one of the worst tragedies to befall humankind? Would my opinion not be just as valid as the most avid pro-choice individual?

I am more than tired of hearing and reading that if I believe in any issue that is not considered "liberal," then I must be a right-wing crazy lunatic. I am none of those labels. My opinions and beliefs are based upon strong foundational tenets, and I am more than willing to defend them. But why should I?

I am extremely grateful to live in a nation where I can believe as I do. I embrace each American citizen's right to do the same. I do not wish to denigrate those who do not believe as I do. I do not wish to denigrate those who choose to cast a ballot which is different from mine. I thank God and millions of brave men, women and families throughout the history of this great nation who have sacrificed, and continue to do so.

I would only ask that those who disagree with me do so with knowledge and without belittling my well-founded and deeply held opinions.

I'm gonna say it again, since you didn't post.

This is sexist and stupid. The Dems are pushing us women voters even further to McCain & Palin. Keep up the good work, morons.

We watched it happen to Hillary………..trust me when I say- IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. Watch your step folks…we'll turn this election upside down. Just wait and see

cindy   August 31st, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Palin - The nightmare you didn't see coming. You know it, you feel it. That's why all the Dem panic and anger. She will take down all the big men and they won't even understand how it happened. Forget the hillary votes, she electrifies the conservative base. They will all come out to vote now. THAT is what you fear and for good reason.

McCain/Palin 08!

I think it's absurd that GOP strategists are claiming the Palin choice will sway female Hillary supporters to vote for the Republicans.

To suggest that women will vote on gender versus the issues is an INSULT.

Governor Palin is a far-right Republican conservative who is against a woman's right to choose, she is against gays, & she loves guns & the NRA. The McCain/Palin ticket offers more of the same Bush policies, cowering to the religious right at the expense of personal freedoms.

It was a self-depracating remark. Very funny. I'm a woman and have no problems with the comment.

Cathy   August 31st, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Thanks "bo" and "Think Smart"….VERY INTERESTING!!!

As a side note…PALIN IS NO HILLARY CLINTON!!!

Nora   August 31st, 2008 6:42 pm ET

McCain tells jokes about Janet Reno being Chelsea's father. McCain offers to enter his wife in a beauty pagent. The press doesn't mention it. Hillary's die-hard so-called feminist supporters don't care. Yet, Biden says something about Palin being attractive and this is a huge deal. Give me a break.

Len   August 31st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Gov. Palin was chosen to attract the social conservatives because of her stance on abortion, guns and anti gay rights. The same policies that Bush was elected on. Also, she supports Big Oil. Rush Limbaugh had a hand in this selection.
She was also selected to attract Hillary supporters. Miscalculation, she does not represent Senator Clintons policies and her desire for health care, ending the war, womens rights, jobs in America, increases taxes for big oil, and others.
The American people will not fall for this political pandering….I was a Clinton supporter and I will defintely vote for Obama!

Obama/Biden 2008!!!

Hey Democrats! Here's an idea:

Try talking about how great your candidate and his running mate are instead of relying on negative comments and attacks on the Republicans. Or could it be that Obama really has nothing to offer, and you're all in denial? For every insult you throw at McCain, there are two legitimate criticisms against Obama.

Gov. Palin may be younger than Obama, but at least she understands the importance and dignity of human life, a concept that Obama admits is above his pay grade.

Gov. Palin has proven in her short time as a governor that she is not a strict partisan politician. Like McCain, she has been labeled a ‘Maverick’- one who isn’t afraid to challenge the popular mindset of Republicans.

It is this kind of bi-partisan ideology that the United States needs. Obama accuses all other politicians of ‘divisive exchange’, but it is Mr. Obama that is divisive. He is the most liberal senator and presidential candidate that this country has ever seen. How can an individual who makes former President Bill Clinton look conservative unite the United States?

Senator Obama is the most arrogant, stuck up candidate this country has ever seen. He has the audacity to use a historic speech by a famed Republican, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as a template for a DNC rally speech? Dr. King is rolling in his grave!

This man shouldn't even be allowed to run until he can actually produce an authenticated birth certificate.

Barack Hussein Obama has a terrible weakness for the limelight. He drew out the announcing of his VP candidate just to get more press coverage. He goes overseas for photo opportunities in front of historic landmarks used by past presidents, but skips visiting with troops to go work out at the gym.

Senator McCain, on the other hand, has humbled himself time and time again in the public's eye. He announced his running mate very quietly, in comparison to Obama, yet the Democrats hound him and make a huge deal out of it. He doesn't go searching for opportunities to make big public appearances, yet his popularity is soaring and he is gaining support.

John McCain served our country and was put through horrors of war that most people cannot begin to understand. When he was presented with freedom, McCain elected to stay behind with his brothers-in-arms. Who among us would do the same in his place? What has Mr. Obama done for this country as a citizen? What has Mr. Obama done as a senator since he took office?

Mr. McCain is a man of principle. His values are his own- they are not shaped by daily politics and trends.

Obama says he offers hope for America. Why should this country that has become a culture of death have to 'hope' for change when we CAN change it with McCain?

palin should get 90% of the womens vote

Right, because women WANT to lose the majority of their rights.

The majority of women I've talked to loved the Palin idea at first, then they learned about her views and experience. She's a MAJOR step back in terms of women's rights, do your research.

McCain laughs when a supporter calls Hillary Clinton a bit*h but Biden is the sexist? Republicans are so desperate right now, they
