Biden and Obama campaigned in Ohio Sunday.
Biden and Obama campaigned in Ohio Sunday.

TOLEDO, Ohio (CNN) – Joe Biden says there are obvious differences between himself and fellow vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but they’re not just on policy. She’s good-looking.

“There’s a gigantic difference between John McCain and Barack Obama and between me and I suspect my vice presidential opponent,” Biden said at an outdoor rally Sunday, getting ready to hit the GOP ticket for their economic policies.

“She’s good-looking,” he quipped.

“You are gorgeous!” a female supporter in the audience shouted out. Biden asked her to repeat it into the microphone so his wife at home would hear.

“I haven’t heard that in a long, long, long time,” Biden said as the audience laughed. “Being around this lean young-looking guy is making me feel pretty old, you know what I mean? I thought I was in pretty good shape until I hung out with this guy.”

At the rooftop rally, both Biden and Obama commented on Palin for the first time without prompting from reporters. Obama joked he’s now considering going to Palin’s home state of Alaska – the only state he says he hasn’t visited – but chose to focus his comments on her position on equal pay for women.

“John McCain’s new VP nominee seems like a very engaging person, a nice person. But I’ve got to say, she’s opposed – like John McCain is – to equal pay for equal work. That doesn’t make much sense to me.”

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella called Obama's comments a disgrace and "an absurd accusation."

Obama later made sure his running mate realizes he's good-looking as well.

“You see, she thinks you’re gorgeous too Joe,” said Obama. “Jill goes back home and look what happens!”

“This is worth the run,” responded Biden.

[...] Question: Is Democratic Sen. Joe Biden sexist for calling Palin "good-looking"? [...]

tom richards   September 1st, 2008 10:07 am ET

Obama's ship had been sinking and Biden provided the final nail in the his coffin.

Biden is OK, don't pick on the man, however, our family's voting McCain/Palin08

Clevelander   August 31st, 2008 9:08 pm ET

Why can't Senator Biden say Sarah Palin is good looking? That's a true statement! If you are a man who is straight and you don't think she is good looking, there is something wrong with your vision or your brain.

Stop all the silly attacks on a good public servant. If you think a statement like this is offensive, you are either too stupid to understand the beauty scale or you are just a GOP attack machine.

If this is the game that GOP is interested in playing, why don't you denounce all that stupid things that Bush has said or done for this country. We are hurting badly here in Ohio. Why doesn't GOP do something?

NO MORE GOP 08

Biden is s senator that has made a career out of sitting in committee meetings in the senate, towing the party line, and attacking the other party. Obama is the of he same mold–just a new kid on the block .The fact is, Palin has more executive experience than either of them combined! It also appears she has a life experience (hunting, fishing, raising kids, reforming the world around her) that does circles around either of these bureaucrats. They need to get a life!

Josh   August 31st, 2008 8:36 pm ET

These guys are joking around about her looks and at least from this article don't appear to attack her on anything with actual merit. They had better be careful they don't further offend the women in their party with cruddy comments like these.
I know there are some out there saying "equal pay for equal work is an issue with substance," but seriously, do you actually believe this woman believes what they're saying she does regarding women's rights in the workplace? If anyone is going to believe women should get paid less it will be some of the three men running for office.

Juan Grain   August 31st, 2008 8:35 pm ET

We love you Joe! Don't worry Palin will be jiffy-pop vetted and McCain is already getting grief for his poor judjement on his first real decision. He is a maverick alright, one that has been roped & tied and branded with the letter P, P for Palin by the Rush Rove Neo-con gang! What a sad way to end your carrer Juan McPlain. You should have switched parties when you cried to Reid about the treatment the lat time.

Rob Shore   August 31st, 2008 8:35 pm ET

Thank God there is finally someone on any ticket who has some Executive government leadership experience. Governor Palin has more Executive experience than Obama, Biden, HR Clinton and McCain combined.

There is a reason why America rarely elects Senators to the highest office, it comes down to a lack of real experience. I'm sure Barry, Joe and John did great jobs running their Senate office staffs. That doesn't quite measure up to running a State and acting as the Commander of the militia in that State. John McCain recognized he needed the help.

I'm quite comfortable with a woman who can shoot straight and clings to her gun, occupying the Blair House and has not sold her soul to the DC elite. She scares the hell out of the Beltway Bandits.

MD in Oklahoma   August 31st, 2008 8:34 pm ET

When Palin gave her speech, I thought it was immature for her to say how she is still with the same man she met in high school vs saying I am proud to have been married to Todd for x number of years.

I also thought she was going to mention Shirley Chisholm in her speech. I wonder why she failed to mention her name.

LOLOLOL CNN the ONLY Blog to INCLUDE FOX that has failed to allow ONE story of the DOZENS about Palin to show up. She is falling apart and it has been barely 48 hours. CNN you can Censor all you want like you do for Mccain everyday but like me HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of people have left CNN behind and get our news elswhere.

I know you won't post this..CNN lost its backbone as soon as Hillary Lost to Obama, now it is ANYONE BUT OBAMA CNN!!!

Oh yeah I know you won't post this, that is why I have already posted it ( And it was Published) on FOX, HUFFPO, MSNBC about half a dozen other blogs.

We used to talk about CNN arond the office now we just talk about how CNN Sold out.

John   August 31st, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Biden also said Obama was good looking and thats not the headline.

OBAMA WAS ELECTED PALIN WAS SELECTED   August 31st, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Guess I have to keep posting this until all you dittoheads get the difference. Even if you think that a Harvard law degree in constitutional law is equal to a B.S in journalism from Idaho as "experience" Obama was ELECTED NOT SELECTED by one angry old desperate man willing to risk the future of 300 million Americans by throwing them under the Straight Talk Express(I am suprised I stil type those 3 words without giggling). That is what most thinking people are concerned about is McCrypt 's obvious mental decay with this "judgment" selection. When people are ELECTED then the people have a say in the SELECTION. It may be foreign concept to Republicans but it is called Democracy, you can Google it for the definition.

So, hold onto the tobbacky can as this may rock your world, but some folks do NOT think Rush is smart and just because he thinks she is a "babe" may qualify her as VP material in that single functioning brain cell that dittoheads seem to have in common, but about 200 million of us will actually make a decision by ourselves.

I know you felt the earth wobble on it's axis by me speaking such heresy but there is a whole world outside of talk radio!

It is truly unfortunate that you Democrats have such nasty comments.
And the comments of Pdixon I will address by saying when you choose abortion it is not your body but that of a child, so you are wrong, it is not your choice. And you know what, if you are pro abortion we don't need your vote. You know where you can take your nasty comments and your pro abortion views.

Tracey   August 31st, 2008 8:32 pm ET

I rest my case! The republican bloggers were still unable to answer the question of appropriate vetting of this woman to the American people. John claims to have love for this country! That is his campaign slogan, "Country First." He did not think about this country when he made this reckless decision. He is now going to "introduce" her to the American people, 60+days before the election! Wow! This is not acceptable! This is like, entrusting your new next door neighbor who just move into your neighborhood yesterday, to babysit your children while you go out. You can twist this decision how ever way you choose, but you know, it is reckless!

Senator Biden is neither sexist nor patronizing; he just suffers from the good old foot in the mouth affliction!!

BTW, some of the comments seem to suggest that somehow Palin invited Biden's comments by being a beautyqueen runner up. How interesting??!!

Cindy McCain said today " Palin has National Security Experience because Alaska is close to Russia ".

analaskan   August 31st, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Oh yeah! Thiese kind of comments sure do prove to me how vastly intellignet and experienced in foreign affairs this candidate is. (And where women stack up in his opinion)

4Obama   August 31st, 2008 7:50 pm ET

People keep talking about executive experience.......excately what do you call Obama manageing the best political machine ever? He has never ran out of money, there is no drama and it spreads across the United States.

It's a good thing this innocent statement was so overblown because it has made it perfectly clear why McCain picked her.

you mean a woman cannot be intelligent and good looking.
the later would be the sexist outlook.

Jay   August 31st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Rudy, you know that Biden is just as 'self-controlled' as McCain. Actually he's more self-controlled. He never left his wife for other women. He never selectively chose beauty queens to be by his side. And if he expressed his temper, i.e. on Bush' comments during a visit to the Knesset, it was appropriate. I said the same thing about dubya. McCain would be out of control if given the chance. He and Palin are Pro Life "and" Pro Dumb War ..... don't forget.... based on lies.

Secondly, despite her 'executive experience', her resume' lists a B.S. in journalism with minor in political science. Both Biden and Obama have J.D.'s.

Gerald Layne   August 31st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

I wonder if Palin will be Biden's weakness. For one, he speaks from the hip in a very political correct media environment. She has excutive budget balnce experience. This election just got exciting.

Paul   August 31st, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Biden makes a self-depricating comment and 1) it becomes a CNN headline; and 2) fodder for fools waiting to jump on any non-issue to avoid discussing what really matters.

Disgraceful.

Bob, Michigan   August 31st, 2008 7:41 pm ET

@ comment by interesting at 7:21. Yes it's interesting that you call Biden sexist and then go on to call Obama, "boy". I guess that makes you a racist.

fixthebroken   August 31st, 2008 7:37 pm ET

Any objective person will know that Joe Biden is being self-deprecating. I hope America is not that stupid to think otherwise.

Also, I am so tired about hearing that Palin is more experienced than Obama, and Obama is #1 on the ticket.....

First, it is not true. Palin has more executive office experience. But Obama has more overall political experience than Palin.

Secondly, Obama was *elected by millions of American voters* to be #1 on top of the ticket. He wasn't chosen by a singular person. Palin was *chosen by John McCain in his first executive decision* to be his running mate.

Compare apples to apples here people - compare Palin and Biden, or Obama and McCain. But please, don't undermine my intelligence by comparing Palin to Obama and making misleading statements about experience!

...and p.s. JCH Philly Democrat, Tim Kaine has more overall experience than Palin by a long shot. Jeez, bring some facts here people.

John   August 31st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Biden best be careful what he says about her...People will perceive him as anti-female if he's not...They attacked Hillary and didn't get attacked a whole lot, but this woman is much more feminine than Hillary, who is perceived as a rather hard core politician

Lourdes   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Oh, please. It's not sexist to say a woman is good looking. Lots of people in the press say Obama is good looking and that's not sexist (AND publish pictures of him in a bathing suit...they could never get away with doing that with a female political candidate!) He didn't call her a degrading name or anything close. it's just the same as when he says Barack is better looking than him. I'm a feminist myself, but really, women do nothing for our cause by getting worked up over trivialities like this.

It's FAR MORE SEXIST for McCain to think that he can oppose women voters by putting an unqualified woman up for VP and think that she holds a CANDLE to a woman like Hillary. Believing women candidates are interchangeable.... that's REAL sexism. The dangerous kind.

Kris   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Jeez - how are these publicans going to react when Biden starts commenting about her RECORD??? Calling someone who chose to be a beauty pagent contestant good looking is sexist? (Who traded on appearance first? Hmmmm . . . whenever it's convenient.) She's no longer running for "Miss Congeniality," y'know . . .

Dimslie   August 31st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Yes, but, is she "clean and well spoken"?

Rudy   August 31st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Biden's behavior cannot be controlled and as an American seeking the Vice President of the USA he is a disgrace not only to women but the men who have deep respect for women - and Obama stands by and smiles. It is obvious that Biden and Obama are concerned of Palin's entrance into this race. It highlights the lack of experience of Obama when the Vice President candidate of the other party has more experience as a chief executive than the Presidential nominee of the Democratic party - and this lack of executive experience is so obvious. Obama's time in the U.S. Senate has been spent mostly campaigning - at taxpayers expense. He has no executive experience and no international experience. In fact Palin has more executive experience than all the three candidates put together. So Obama and Biden be careful, you have already raise an issue that will eventually be your undoing, especially when the American voters realize that your rhetoric has no substance. Yes, it is the popcorn theory - much noise but little substance.

Independent turn O/B ticket   August 31st, 2008 7:26 pm ET

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN Republicans & Democrats.
Republicans can pretend to be happy about Palin even though they don't know him. Republicans have succeded in actually brain watching people with fear. Macain with experience has been wrong with judgement especially in areas where he is supposed to be good-Foreign policy. Yet---
And if Republicans are coming up with executive experience. What they are actually saying is that Palin has more experience than Macain who has only senate experience as Obama. Ignorance is a desease.
Republicans are good in putting fear in people.
Democrats lifts people up with positive encouragement.
And for those who thinks that there is no money to do what Obama is proposing, Republicants have always said no money for health care but we can afford to pay 10b monthly in Iran. Where is common sense. I wil rather take a chance on Obama than same 8 yrs of experience of abuse of power.
Independent for Obama.

This debate is hilarious. It would be one thing if Joe Biden was a greasy, ugly sleaze ball and said what he said - but he is extremely good looking himself, and surely knows that - so it's obvious he was just horsing around harmlessly. Palin IS good looking, so is Biden, so is Obama. Even McCain isn't painful to look at. So at least we don't have any victims of the ugly stick running around upsetting our electoral process with their gnarliness. What a relief that is. Biden's record on women's rights is equal to the best of them and puts most to shame. Give me a break. As a heart-broken Hillary supporter, I admit that I was looking for a reason to go to the other side, and abruptly stopped all thoughts of it when Biden was announced as the V.P. candidate. My sticking point was experience, and Biden brings it in spades. Can't vote against Joe Biden. Putting him on the ticket is the smartest thing Obama could have done. Hillary voters are not going to vote for McCain-Palin just because Palin is a woman. To us, unlike with the sexists who hate her, it's not about gender. And we love Joe Biden. Love him.

potter   August 31st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Dem's VP attacking dog shows its true color with one added label – sexist! Wondering if he thinks that having been sitting in a Senator's seat for a while he can get away with this. This will not help Mr O get the undecided votes he lost.

Hanky   August 31st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Wake up America!!!
Please learn the difference between taking a pot-shot at oneself than a sexist remark.
McCain calculated that many women would side with Sarah Palin just because she is a woman. I think admiration is in order, but do you want to vote for a woman who could become our next president with so little NATIONAL experience?
She is residing over a state that has less people than the city of Jacksonville, Florida. 1 1/2 years executive experience means little to me over such a small state and no NATIONAL political experience.
Obama has eight years of Chicago legislative experience and four years of national political experience, not to mention that he sees and understand Washington and picked an experienced running mate who can take over seamlessly just in case.
This VP has no foreign policy experience, no national domestic policy experience and has blown up her thin resume.
Abraham Lincoln had the same amount of experience as Barack before taking office, but his judgment was eerily similar.
As far as plans, in many ways McCain is too vague and he supported the war in Iraq and lacked the necessary vision Obama has.
Obama has been running an excellent campaign and tried to be civil. His campaign, many consider one of the best ever run. That goes to jugdment and decision making.
While McCain has shown bipartisan tendencies in the past, his straight talk, maverick ways that endeared him to so many is absent.
His campaign has represented much of what he really is not, until that pick of Palin, which seemed like desperation and pandering.
I understand it has high risk, high reward, but is too dangerous to put our country in such hands if necessary.

Sacha   August 31st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Joe H   August 31st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Being an outsider from Canada, although my mother is American, I follow the news closely. I love my country of Canada as much and as furiously as do Americans love theirs. My Grandparents were strong Democrats, and being of Irish descent loved JFK and RFK, but following the Blog’s and the messages that are placed for everyone, all I seem to read is the hate the people show towards either candidate and supporters. The worst seem to be from those that support Obama/ Biden. Maybe it is the fear that there is a chance that a once in a lifetime opportunity for an African American to hold the most powerful office in the world could slip away. All the name calling and put-downs only serve to awaken those Republicans who may not have taken the time to vote last time and to get out this election.
I think everyone would be better off if you forget that someone is black or white, was rich or poor, male or female, young or old, but rather they are “Americans” who care for the country, and believe they can help make it better. Listen to the solutions to questions put forth, not the spiels and jargon which most politicians hand out. It is easy to say "I have a plan" but what you need to hear is what is the plan is in detail. I think Biden as usual was way of line with is comments on Palin, I found then to border on sexist and he should apologize immediately. These are the things that can go to hurt Obama's chance.
Stop the hate mongering and name calling, instead of putting down the opponent try just praising yours. Be the bigger person as they say.

A Canadian prospective but as your hearts do declare, “God bless America” and good luck.

Sincerely
Joe H
Canada

Jay   August 31st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

First of all, I will be voting for Obama/Biden without a doubt. Secondly, the choice of Palin, a former beauty queen is hardly a surprise given McCain's history. Third, it is my belief that Hurrican Gustav is the answer to Dr. James Dobson's prayers for "unspeakable rain" intended for Obama's speech. Now sadly it comes to New Orleans instead of St. Paul for the RNC opening.

MVinAZ   August 31st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

McCain, with his pick of Palin, has turned this campaign into a joke. I can't imagine Palin didn't see all this criticism coming. Thus, she offered herself up as a GOP sacrifice, a woman willing to be used and abused. Republicans can't possibly believe she is capable of running this country. My goodness. Mayor of a town of fewer than 10,000 people? I live in a town of 20,000 or so. Could our Mayor be President? It's absurd. And the notion that her time in public office has somehow lent itself to making her a more experienced candidate than Obama is even more absurd.

Whether the motivation for choosing Palin was simply foolish or calculated AND foolish, it trivializes the importance of the issues our country faces.

Any woman who enters herself into a beauty contest isn't in a position to complain about someone calling them pretty, unless she wants to be called a hypocrite.

She's a female version of George W Bush, just not a complete idiot. She however is one of these crazy religious nut cases who see Jesus on a potato chip or a moth wing.

She's pretty all right, pretty scary!

Charlotte   August 31st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Sarah doesn't pretend to be qualified on foriegn affairs at this point in time. From what I've heard about her she is a quick study. McCain is the foreign affairs expert. What she adds to the ticket is the change in Washington, Obama keeps preaching about. He talks of change and then selects one of the longest serving Senators in the Senate. I like Biden, preferred Hillary though. Obama chose Biden to bolster his lack of experience. He chose Biden and ignored half of the democrats, not good judgement if you ask me. Sarah impresses me as a person who will be dedicated and she doesn't need a teleprompter when she speaks. Oh, and she is attractive and smart.

There's really no story here, is there CNN? As newsprint journalist I see the ugly writing on the wall again, CNN, like other media, has to stir the pot again to "make" news. And lest we forget, Palin once did compete in beauty contest. Now, talk about sexist.

Bill from California   August 31st, 2008 7:19 pm ET

So many people here are concerned that Palin is not ready to take over for McCain if something happened to him, yet she has more executive experience than Obama. Such stupid people in this country. RealDeal   August 31st, 2008 7:15 pm ET

I'm shocked and appalled McCain chose this person as his VP. McCain is 72 years old. He seems mentally confused, disorganized, and forgetful. He has an undisclosed psychiatric history and very serious medical problems. It is very, very unlikely, if elected, he would finish his first term. This means that his VP nominee, Palin who attended Hawaii Pacific College 1 year in 1982, transferred to North Idaho College for 1983-1984 school year, transferred to the University of Idaho in fall of 1984 and graduated from there with a journalism degree in 1987. Notice it took her five years to get a Bachelor's degree.

McCain's VP choice would be president of the Senate. How does that make sense when she has no national or foreign policy experience? That means a POW with no foreign policy experience and a VP with no foreign policy experience would be running our country. And taking on state legislators is the not the same as taking on US Congress. At that level alliances are very, very complex.

But more importantly, McCain has confused Obama's outstanding leadership skills with celebrity. He doesn't get it. Obama is not popular just because he's an extraorinary orator. He's popular because his oratory is backed by his policies and his actions.

Given McCain's age, medical problems, and his mental status, it shows his reckless disregard for America in choosing such a person as his nominee. Just totally bizarre and crazy.

This statement was hardly sexist or chauvinistic. It was complimentary, not demeaning in anyway. It would have been sexist if one of them had said that her looks were all she brought to the Republican ticket. I hope Palin herself isn't as prickly as some of those commenting on this. She's in the big league of politics now and better be able to take shots like that because she's going to get far worse over the next few weeks; this isn't about her or her looks or anything else, it's about us.

Dadaba for OBAMA/BIDEN   August 31st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

This comment of Palin being good-looking is so not sexist, and the people who are trying to make it so need to really get a life! Yes, politics is serious business, but it can also be funny as heck.

It is a fact – she is a beautiful woman. She entered pagents for crying out loud! Obviously she did that because she knows that she's beautiful.

Biden merely stated the obvious!

Rick   August 31st, 2008 7:11 pm ET

t least the GOP inexperience isn;t at the top of the ticket. Besides, at least Palin has run something – has executive branch experience. Obama has none of it.

But she is not prepared to take over for McCain, if somethng were to happen to him.

This ain't American Idol, folks. McCain nominated someone with zero foreign policy experience to be a heartbeat away from the front lines of decision-making against the terrorists. Does this make you feel any safer?

What Biden said about Palin being good looking was an arrogant sexist, male superiority comment. Explains totaly what happened to Hillary. Democrats just pretend to support women to get their votes.
What Biden said will be in an Republican attack ad comming your way soon.

Rush Limbaugh says she cooks a mean moose stew and shes a babe....If she looked like Janet Reno and Joe said that then it would be sexist...But she is really pretty and she should take that as a compliment.

Eight sitting presidents have died in office. That's ONE in FIVE!

Now McCain – a 72-year-old, four-time cancer survivor – wants us to risk having Miss Alaska with her finger on The Button?!?!

Palin was picked out of right-wing pandering, tokenism and desperation. Women of America, please don't fall for this shameless ploy. She has two X chromosomes but she ain't no Hillary, she’s not even a Kay Bailey Hutchinson or another *qualified* Rep. Female. (And, in fairness, there are several.)

I guess McCain wasn’t satisfied ditching his first wife on her death bed and gold-digging for a trophy wife, now he’s got himself a trophy VP as well. What character this guy has! (Wait for it… insert the GOP playing the POW-card here.)

Ironic, isn’t it that McCain is always claiming that Obama would rather lose a war to win an election and then he pulls this irresponsible stunt ?!?!

Nicolette   August 31st, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Am I the only person disgusted and offended that Palin continues to have a discussion about "choosing" to keep her child who has down syndrome. Does this mean that she actually thought about having an abortion? I believe that even having these thoughts would make her a hypocrite. You have to question her values as she continues to use this child as political gain.

There are many pro-choice women that have made the same decision to give birth and raise a child with down syndrome. I find this argument appalling and offensive.

Mauri   August 31st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Well, well, well....my take on this is vastly different. These two people make me sick, and I'm not talking about Senator McCain and Governor Palin. With reference to the stupid, put-down remarks of both Dem candidates, I say at least John McCain does not feel threatened at having a woman campaigning at his side. Poor Hillary, you never had a chance with these two sexist rebrobates. After this, I'm even more proud to join the host of Hillary women who for sure will vote for McCain/Palin. To Joe (Gorgeous) Biden and Barack (the chosen one) I ask what will President Merckel of Germany say when she hears your remarks directed to the only woman in the race. Do I hear an apology coming down?

Mike In Gboro   August 31st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Tom as for Palin getting the female vote because Obama is getting the black vote, speaks volumes about your character.

Here is the rundown on the black communities voting history: Mondale=87% BV (Black Vote) Clinton=91 and 94% respectively (both more than Obama) Gore=90% and Kerry=88%.

So unlike so many other factions in this country blacks vote their party and economic and social interests, so Sen. Clinton would have been receiving the same support had she been the nominee.

Your suugestion reeks of sexism and racism, enlighten yourself.

Tracey   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

People, let's not focus on this trival crap! Focus on this country and the risk that we are all going to be in if McSane is elected President. I don't think you are going to locate "shady" dealings in her background. by Ken, Virginia

-She is under 'ethics' investigation now ... huh? How could you say you will not find shady dealings. The calls came from 'her' house eventhough she says her husband made them and she had no knowledge ... And now everyone wants to say it's ok because her ex-brother in law was a drunk suspected of child abuse ... If that was the case, let the cops and the judicial system handle .. for the governor to apply pressure is still wrong no matter how good her intentions were ... So there is 'shade' in Palins past/present/future

paul   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

PEOPLE, PLEASE! Gov Palin is a woman, a mother, a wife and a well respected governor in a state truly run by men! Give her more respect than what it seems to be right now. Jokes as subtle as "she's good looking" only go back to the little old sexist joke about the pretty office worker who is just there to make the guys happy.

How dare Obama or even Biden talk about her supposed lack of experience and HOW DARE CNN make such a big deal out of it when they have YET to make the same big deal about OBAMA!!! If we are to discuss her 'lack of experience' then let the conversation contain Obama as well.

We must remember that McCain will leave office after his run as president by walking abroad the presidential helicopter himself like many other presidents. So Palin will not have to worry too much about being president until her TRUE time comes. Now Obama, well, he has to take a training course if he is elected before he gets behind the big desk.

McLackofJudgment or McPanderer, You Decide   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

McCain is more concerned with politics than America's safety, if he thinks Palin is qualified to look Putin in the eye.

thenewscoverage   August 31st, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Ken: you said that 'I don't think you are going to locate "shady" dealings in her background.' So you are not aware that she is currently being investigated for pushing to have her brother in law fired while he was going thru a messy divorce with Gov Palin's sister? She was also whole heatedly endorsed by the corrupt Ted Stevens. I have video proof of both!

But you know what, she did do some serious, hard hitting reform work. So much so that she all but lost the Republican parties support in her first year; she has less then two years in office btw

There are good things and bad things about Sarah Palin, and IMHO, the bad far outweigh the good. I think Huckabee would have been a far better choice for McCain's ticket. He is also an outsider, has strong religious ties and is proved to be very charismatic and capable of running a good campaign on a tight budget.

Polar bear cub   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

McCain = invading Iran.

Obama = lying politician.

mamacoo   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

WOW !!! All the comments made by the right wing about Senator Clinton and even Palin calling her a whiner and the Republicans want to start screaming and whining about Senator Biden's remarks. Even people in her own party have talked about her looks and that she was a beauty pageant winner.

GARedNeck   August 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Don't look for your female side to be respected. If you are running for the same office as a male. I'm so sick of you females with this garbage.

Now all of a sudden, Gov. Palin is on the GOP ticket and they want to change Washington. Today I watch her speech. The supporter was chating. Yes we can, how funny, but they will say BO is not ready to lead. Guess what. Bush is following BO and now McCopy is following
BO. My question to the American people. Who is the leader? Can't guess. Answer Barack Obama.

Keep up the sexist attacks and watch the women flock to McCain/Palin. Oh wait, they already are. I really love how Obamaphiles are now so concerned about women's rights, when during the primaries they had no problem with his and media's sexist and misogynist attacks against Senator Clinton and her women supporters. None of you are fooling anyone with your faux concern.

Go back to genuflecting before your god and leave women's rights to those who actually care about them.

Republicrats   August 31st, 2008 6:58 pm ET

This is news worthy? I still don't know anything about what either campaign wants to do. I mean I know Obama wants to change something and McCain doesn't want to leave Iraq. But besides that, it is all politics as usual. The same rehash from every election I can remember... Republicans are against abortion, Democrats are for it. The Democrats are for Gay Marriage, Republicans are against it. It doesn't matter who wins, nothing is going to change. Why bother? I had a good job through Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, and Bush Jr. I highly doubt either of these guys is going to make much of a difference. You want change, start voting Green, Libertarian, Reform, Independent, anything but the sos. We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect a different result! Quit being sheep for your party.

I was terribly sad when Hillary did not win the nomination. I was really undecided on who I was going to vote for. After listening to her speech and what she had to say , I am behind Barack Obama. If Hillary stands behind him, I trust her judgement. I am tired of all this nonsense. I have a family. I have children I have to think about. It really does not matter who is pretty or ugly or black or white or purple for all that matters is we get a candidate that will help our country get back on track. There is too much at stake here to worry over little things. Actually, I am a 40 year old female and I said the same thing when I saw her. She is really pretty. I am not sexist. It is an obervation. She is on tv. We all looked at her. How many people thought that? It boils down to the fact that if you really believed in Hillary -trust her judgement. She has spent more time with Barack Obama than you or I have. If she trusts that he will lead us then so do I.
It is because of Hillary that I support Barack Obama. She swayed my vote.

Greg FL.   August 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Let's not start accusing Biden of being sexist. It wasn't what he meant and everyone knows it. You want sexist? Lets talk about McCain calling his wife the c word and in front of reporters on top of that. It makes me believe he says worse behind closed doors. So lets put these things into perspective and not get all crazy over this comment.

Besides it was a compliment from one party to another and you republicans are trying to use that against him? Sounds kind of pathetic and desperate to me. Oh and thank you so much CNN for creating drama on something so non-issue (that's the really pathetic part).

Daryl   August 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Sen Biden went to the President Clinton Camp of Democratic leadership and it involves the patronizing and objectifing of women.

I cannot believe that the Democrats look so fondly on the Clinton years, he threw politics and women in politcs back about a decade with his adulterous ways, as a man if you cannot control your mouth or other parts of your anatomy then you really need to get out of politics because we are sick of it being a SOP for a political candidate or office holder to be a pig.

If you want the scandel ridden Clinton years back then be sure to vote Democrat, if your argument is Obama is different look at his running mate then realize you just falsified your McCain is Bush argument because apparently the man running does make the difference.

I remember when the liberal media tried to brand McCain as a womanizer while their party struggles now under the Edwards scandal. This is the party of no social values and no responsibility for their actions. That is not a party I want in charge of the country.

If at this point you still want to vote republic after Macain has indicated that, There is no good republican left in the senate you must be one of the 10% who is so scared of the 90% change Obama brings with him.
As far as Biden comments, most of them in the government have hardly met this woman just like most of us except Alaskans. So her looks is all we know at this point can be true ( that is without plastics).
CNN please stop making headlines of irrelevant issues. This is a crucial time in this country so please educate voters on the candidates and issues. Untill the convention most people hear about Obama raising taxes without knowing who will be affected by his taxes vs Macains'. You can help make this country better. thx.

Let me quote my 28 year old daughter:

"How stupid does McCain think we women who voted for Hillary are anyway? He picks a woman who stands for everything that Hillary most of her supporters oppose and then he thinks we will vote for her just because she's a woman? That's the most patronizing, insulting thing he could have done. Maybe some shallow men will vote for her because she is a beauty queen, but any woman with a brain will see this for what it is: a cheap political trick.

I would add that this pick proves that McCain puts politics above country, I don't care what his slogan says. Does anyone in their right mind think he picked her because he thought she would add value to solving the military and economic challenges facing this country? If so, send me an e-mail because I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell you.

Lauren   August 31st, 2008 6:50 pm ET

As if we didn't know that McCain picked Palin entirely for her gender. He meets her once, he makes sure that she fits in with his campaign, and he prays like hell that women will be dumb enough to vote for a woman because she's a woman and not because it's a good ticket.

I won't vote for Palin. I wouldn't vote for Condi or for Anne Coulter, even if they were running for president. I'd rather have a good president/VP than have a historic woman in the White House.

Hillary would have been great. But I'm not going to compromise WHY I was voting for her just to see a woman in VP (or President if McCain kicks it). I can't believe that other Hillary supporters don't see that McCain is making a lame, sexist bid for their vote. And that Palin is everything that Hillary wasn't . . . in a bad way!

Is O-blah-blah ready handle it - if something should happen to Biden?

An Independent female voter in Tucson, AZ   August 31st, 2008 6:49 pm ET

On several occasions, Sen. John McCain has joked that the two key responsibilities of a VP is to break tie votes in the Senate and “check on the President’s health everyday.” Given his propensity for beauty queens, recall his first wife Carol was a beauty queen/model and Cindy was a junior rodeo queen, he has selected a former “Miss Congeniality” for the nation’s number two spot—a good example of his decision-marking processes and an illustration of how he puts the “country first” given his age, bouts with melanoma, and the fact the current administration has us involved in two wars. No matter how “good-looking” Gov. Sarah Palin is, let’s hope she will at least grasp the functions of the office, she previously thought it “unproductive” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Dwzk3g-lB0), before the upcoming VP debates with Sen. Joe Biden.

Check the Governors record compared to Senator Obama community organizing experience. I don't think you are going to locate "shady" dealings in her background.

Kay   August 31st, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Accomplishments: No one needs to tell you Palin's and Obama's accomplishements. They are both posted on their respective websites. He' austhored legislation, she has executive experience, etc etc ... so can the accomplishments. Read for yourself. Now as far as sexism....that is stupid. Biden poked fun at himself. So rather you vote Barack or McCain, do your research and stop with the stupidity. It is really unbecoming of intelligent Americans be you PUMA, Obama supporter, Mc supporter, etc ... go READ about them .. then decide

Dee   August 31st, 2008 6:48 pm ET

As a woman, I am more than content with Sarah Palin's stand on "women's issues." I cannot understand how anyone can say that all American women think and vote alike. It's demeaning. Regardless of whether one is Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Independent, Communist, whatever, ALL WOMEN ARE DIFFERENT!

No one person speaks for me, but if there is a candidate who seems to share many of the values and beliefs I hold dear, I am content to support that candidate, no matter the gender or race. I will not support anyone based upon either gender or race. To do so would be the most sexist, racist statement I could ever make. I would also be a very stupid voter.

I am not stupid and should I vote for McCain/Palin, it would not be an indication that I would vote for a woman at any cost (I'm sorry, but I simply cannot force myself to use the same misspellings and grammatical errors I have seen in previous posts), nor would it be an indication that I do not support "women's issues." I am a strong, intelligent, independent woman, and I have every right to believe and vote as I choose.

I am more than tired of hearing and reading that if I am pro-life, I am anti-abortion, and I am a narrow-minded idiot. What if based my pro-life opinions on having experienced unabated abortion and decided that it was one of the worst tragedies to befall humankind? Would my opinion not be just as valid as the most avid pro-choice individual?

I am more than tired of hearing and reading that if I believe in any issue that is not considered "liberal," then I must be a right-wing crazy lunatic. I am none of those labels. My opinions and beliefs are based upon strong foundational tenets, and I am more than willing to defend them. But why should I?

I am extremely grateful to live in a nation where I can believe as I do. I embrace each American citizen's right to do the same. I do not wish to denigrate those who do not believe as I do. I do not wish to denigrate those who choose to cast a ballot which is different from mine. I thank God and millions of brave men, women and families throughout the history of this great nation who have sacrificed, and continue to do so.

I would only ask that those who disagree with me do so with knowledge and without belittling my well-founded and deeply held opinions.

FL Democrat   August 31st, 2008 6:47 pm ET

I'm gonna say it again, since you didn't post.

This is sexist and stupid. The Dems are pushing us women voters even further to McCain & Palin. Keep up the good work, morons.

We watched it happen to Hillary...........trust me when I say- IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. Watch your step folks...we'll turn this election upside down. Just wait and see

cindy   August 31st, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Palin – The nightmare you didn't see coming. You know it, you feel it. That's why all the Dem panic and anger. She will take down all the big men and they won't even understand how it happened. Forget the hillary votes, she electrifies the conservative base. They will all come out to vote now. THAT is what you fear and for good reason.

I think it's absurd that GOP strategists are claiming the Palin choice will sway female Hillary supporters to vote for the Republicans.

To suggest that women will vote on gender versus the issues is an INSULT.

Governor Palin is a far-right Republican conservative who is against a woman's right to choose, she is against gays, & she loves guns & the NRA. The McCain/Palin ticket offers more of the same Bush policies, cowering to the religious right at the expense of personal freedoms.

Miss Alaska Runner Up for Veep   August 31st, 2008 6:45 pm ET

McCain tells jokes about Janet Reno being Chelsea's father. McCain offers to enter his wife in a beauty pagent. The press doesn't mention it. Hillary's die-hard so-called feminist supporters don't care. Yet, Biden says something about Palin being attractive and this is a huge deal. Give me a break.

Len   August 31st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Gov. Palin was chosen to attract the social conservatives because of her stance on abortion, guns and anti gay rights. The same policies that Bush was elected on. Also, she supports Big Oil. Rush Limbaugh had a hand in this selection.
She was also selected to attract Hillary supporters. Miscalculation, she does not represent Senator Clintons policies and her desire for health care, ending the war, womens rights, jobs in America, increases taxes for big oil, and others.
The American people will not fall for this political pandering....I was a Clinton supporter and I will defintely vote for Obama!

Obama/Biden 2008!!!

Matt   August 31st, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Hey Democrats! Here's an idea:

Try talking about how great your candidate and his running mate are instead of relying on negative comments and attacks on the Republicans. Or could it be that Obama really has nothing to offer, and you're all in denial? For every insult you throw at McCain, there are two legitimate criticisms against Obama.

Gov. Palin may be younger than Obama, but at least she understands the importance and dignity of human life, a concept that Obama admits is above his pay grade.

Gov. Palin has proven in her short time as a governor that she is not a strict partisan politician. Like McCain, she has been labeled a ‘Maverick’- one who isn’t afraid to challenge the popular mindset of Republicans.

It is this kind of bi-partisan ideology that the United States needs. Obama accuses all other politicians of ‘divisive exchange’, but it is Mr. Obama that is divisive. He is the most liberal senator and presidential candidate that this country has ever seen. How can an individual who makes former President Bill Clinton look conservative unite the United States?

Senator Obama is the most arrogant, stuck up candidate this country has ever seen. He has the audacity to use a historic speech by a famed Republican, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as a template for a DNC rally speech? Dr. King is rolling in his grave!

This man shouldn't even be allowed to run until he can actually produce an authenticated birth certificate.

Barack Hussein Obama has a terrible weakness for the limelight. He drew out the announcing of his VP candidate just to get more press coverage. He goes overseas for photo opportunities in front of historic landmarks used by past presidents, but skips visiting with troops to go work out at the gym.

Senator McCain, on the other hand, has humbled himself time and time again in the public's eye. He announced his running mate very quietly, in comparison to Obama, yet the Democrats hound him and make a huge deal out of it. He doesn't go searching for opportunities to make big public appearances, yet his popularity is soaring and he is gaining support.

John McCain served our country and was put through horrors of war that most people cannot begin to understand. When he was presented with freedom, McCain elected to stay behind with his brothers-in-arms. Who among us would do the same in his place? What has Mr. Obama done for this country as a citizen? What has Mr. Obama done as a senator since he took office?

Mr. McCain is a man of principle. His values are his own- they are not shaped by daily politics and trends.

Obama says he offers hope for America. Why should this country that has become a culture of death have to 'hope' for change when we CAN change it with McCain?

Right, because women WANT to lose the majority of their rights.

The majority of women I've talked to loved the Palin idea at first, then they learned about her views and experience. She's a MAJOR step back in terms of women's rights, do your research.

The best of Sarah Palin:
1. Made a statement that she is opposed to inter-racial marriages
2. Believes that creationsim should be taught in public schools
3. Doesn't believe in equal pay for the sexes
4. Opposes any form of birth control (including those for married couples)
5. Is (allegedly) under investigation for abusing her power to try to get he ex-brother in law fired
6. Said that she doesn't know anything about Iraq other than they are "very bad people"
7. Drove the state debt from 2% to over 6% in just over 18 months!!!!

Hillary was a candidate of substance and we all agree that her candidacy did face sexism from the media (most notably Fox). Palin is very different... about the only thing she has going for her is that she is photogenic.

JCH Philly Democrat   August 31st, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Another Biden gaffe??? Or is it really a gaffe, when he is actually saying what he thinks. We all know deep down Biden probably thinks Palin is just a dumb woman with no intelligence or qualification to dare challenge him as a VP candidate. I mean after all, she only runs a large and important state in terms of energy and our economy (and, oh by the way, has the exact same experience as Tim Kaine, who Dems fawned over just 2 weeks ago when they thought he could help deliver VA).

Biden's arrogance is a liability. I want to hear more from her as a candidate and give her a chance before I form opinions, instead of just dismissing her as "good looking" woman.

McCain's advisors are going teach Palin the different between
"Sunni" and "Shea".

Kris   August 31st, 2008 6:31 pm ET

It's interesting how the Democrats jump on Palin and say "she's got no experience"... well, she's held executive office... no one else on either ticket has that. She's been Command in Chief of the Alaskan National Guard... again, more experience.

It's interesting how Democrats dismiss Palin as "McCain just wanted to get the Hillary votes". Maybe it could be he wanted a fresh face and someone who's not afraid to cross party lines.

It's interesting how Democrats say "Palin is anti-woman"... what the heck does that even mean??? Pro-choice doesn't mean anti-woman... it means she has convictions and not only talks the talk, but walks the walk.

This Presidential just got more interesting by added Sarah Palin to the Republican ticket.

Kris

We need serious people who will take our problems seriously. There seems to be more comments being made by republicans based on her looks than anybody. Look forward to the McCain campaign coming out with the sexisms claims.

Hmmm. (I taught Women's Studies & am a life-long feminist with daughters.)

Don't let facts get in the way or your decisions, ladies. Joe Biden and Barack Obama have advocated for women's rights all their lives. Palin is not only ant-choice, she's anti-birth control of any kind. Moms, if you already has children, and were raped or the pregnancy would kill you, or you young daughter was raped, are you telling me that abortion is wrong, always wrong? What about the children you would leave motherless?

And can you really imagine Vladimir Putin sitting across the table from "Pres. Palin?" Really? Do you really think this woman is as experienced as Hillary Clinton? Or as smart?

If you really believe that women actually have brains, then, ladies, you must use your brains. Look at the issues rather than a comment. Palin does not even believe in equal pay for equal work.

If the vice presidency was about good looks then I would say she is a good choice, but for someone who doesn't even know what a vp does goes to show McCain should have went with Paris Hilton.

Simply Amazing. Let me guess, the owners of CNN are RNC faithfuls? Has anyone noticed that CNN has all but stopped coving the Democratic convention all together? Has anyone noticed that somehow this pick is getting my coverage than the obvious reconstruction of the Democratic base? A lot of people are asking, does McCain and the republicans actually think that the American public is this dumb......... Remember, Bush was elected twice and the vice president of our country right now answers heartfelt questions from the citizenry "So".

The republicans lost the election last Thursday night. Friday morning they deployed the bone that the public is intended to chase while they try to steal this election.

Wake up people!

Since when is saying someone is gorgeous a sexist or mean thing? Probably when having a record number of people show up to a political rally on their own accord made someone egocentric. These statements are rediculous. If she is going to get offended when someone remarks on her looks, she shouldn't have gotten into politics after she was in beauty pagents.

PUMA's for Obama   August 31st, 2008 6:24 pm ET

People need to learn how to realize when something is a joke. Clearly Biden was making fun of himself with his comment. "There's a big difference between the two of us – she's good looking."

Is it not true? She is a good looking woman, and Biden was cracking a joke that he was ugly. The woman was a beauty pageant runner up for petesake! What would you be saying if Biden said that he was the good looking one? Would that make things better or worse? "There's a big difference between the two of us – I'm good looking." Wow?

Come on people, Biden is all for Women's Rights. Look up the facts, people. Biden wants to help women get equal pay for equal work. Palin is all for stripping women of every right that they have and moving us back to the stone age.

People REALLY need to learn how to take a joke. It's sad to see people think this is sexist, and I bet every time the Obama or Biden mention that there's something wrong with Palin's policies, they'll be labeled sexist by Palin's spokeswoman.

Michelle   August 31st, 2008 6:24 pm ET

Shame on Barack Obama to falsely state that Sarah Palin is not for equal pay for equal work!

The only clear position here is that Obama is not for Equal Leadership Opportunities for Women!

I'm one former Hillary supporter who is THRILLED that at least one candidate had the guts to put an intelligent, hard-working, dedicated woman of substance on the ticket.

I will vote for Sarah Palin (and yes, John McCain) in 2008.

I'll have to decide in 2012 whether to vote for Hillary or Sarah.

Michelle

P.S. I'm a Yale-educated successful attorney from California, so don't start your bashing that I don't know what I'm talking about. Women CAN indeed hold positions of power even when their children are still at home. I have 3 small children, and my courtroom record is incredibly good!

LeePee- FL   August 31st, 2008 6:24 pm ET

What else could he say to avoid sounding sexist? McCain was the one that said she was pretty! Don't you all listen. She may be able to run Alaska, so what? It's the size of Tampa.

It's okay for her to be Pro-Choice, be for home schooling but when it comes to sending people to war or sitting down with other foreign leaders, she does not have it. I am insulted for Romney and all those qualified Republicans.

Do you want some one who stated in June that she has no interest in the Iraqi war, except for her National guards who are there because she has a government to run. This news printed from her own State and widely broadcast on every news channel except Fox probably.

I have no gender issues with her; I have national and economic issues. Unfortunately, everyone can not go out and shoot a moose for dinner.

For all or you stating you were Hillary supporters, you too supported a woman because if you supported her for her beliefs you would be supporting Obama. No one asked you that are disappointed, just vote Democrat. You slap Hillary in the face when you do otherwise.

If this is all about gender, vote for Paris Hilton. She's cute, has money and knows how to work a crowd!

Get serious; this woman may be good for Alaska; is she good for America . The last time I looked, Alaska has always separated themselves from our issues. You neo-politicians, which one of your relatives will you sacrifice for this ticket? McCain is putting winning first, at what cost. He needs to take that country first sign down.

"No one knew this woman including McCain. Have you noticed all the rhetoric is the same–she runs her State,--Republicans will have a hard time trying to talk about her at the convention. Don't you think McCain is happy and sad about Gustav. He's off the hook some what on explaining who she is and now has time to get his notes together on .. All he can say is she's more qualified that Obama. She knows Russia is not the only foreign country. because it's right next door. .

Well she voted and approved that bridge to no where. You can't take that video back where she is agreeing with Stevens, but she's trying to get back in with McCain and say she didn't. Read the papers from AK.

She is against Roe-Wade. It's good she wanted to keep her baby. That's what choice is about. However, I can not wait for her to finishing pumping when that red phone rings for her to wake up McCain.

James   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

She is good looking.....and that's about it. Both McCain and Palin will be ripped apart during the debates, as they are for everything that has brought this country down. Obama and Biden will be elected.

Dan   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Doesn't everyone know that CNN and FoxNews are in bed with John McCain? CNN will scratch the bottom of the barrel. Biden will take her to school during the debate, then we'll see her ugly side!

voter   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

As a woman, I don't understand how Biden's comment is sexist. How is complimenting a woman sexist? Palin even has a bumper sticker in her car saying she is the hottest woman. People need to stop being sensitive and not over analyze things. By the way, since it is being ignored because the media and the republicans love to avoid the issues, PALIN IS AGAINIST EQUAL PAY FOR WOMEN. Just because she is a woman does not mean she is for women's rights. Point taken aganist equal pay for women and a right to choose.

Observation   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

CNN amazes me. If you read the article, they have "good looking" in quotes and then have the quote off by it self from his other quotes; therefore we don't know the context in which it was said. Nevertheless, Biden needs to be careful and fashion his statements as if he was talking about a male opponnet. I'm female my self, but I did not know that women in the US where so insecure.

Shari   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

The only thing "sexist" about this campaign is that McCain felt it necessary to pander to the democratic and undecided women voters who were behind Hillary, by nominating a woman. A woman that he met with 2 times, prior to asking her to stand next to him as the second most important and responsible official in our country.
Apparently John McCain was hoping that voters and the media would take the bait and allow themselves to be distracted by petty issues, once again and it seems like he may be right with this whole "sexist" comment that, as a women, I didn't find offensive. He even said that he started feeling more unattractive standing next to a good looking guy like Obama everyday.
A woman who is not in favor of women receiving equal pay? A woman who is not for a woman's right to choose? What true supporter of Hillary's policies would vote for her? Isn't that underestimating true Hillary supporters who believe in her for her policies instead of just her gender? Also, how many supporters of Hillary would want to see a woman with MUCH LESS EXPERIENCE than her, be the first to make history over Hillary who has worked so hard for that honor and can hopefully still acheive it in the future?
Now I agree that Palin seems very admirable as a person but that does not make her ready to be our VP, let alone take over as our President in the event that something happens.
I heard someone on a political show say this morning that Obama's camp has some nerve complaining about her lack of experience when Bill Clinton made it a big deal to say that some people said he lacked experience back in 1992, but that is NOT what the Dems are saying. They are saying that McCain's camp has been the one making a big deal out of Obama's lack of experience and now they have done what they have been really good at doing during this entire campaign, which is riding the "Double Talk Express" by selecting someone who, she herself, has said has no foreign affairs experience and even asked (I saw her saying this on video last night on TV) several months ago when talking about how she felt about being on the long list of VP candidates, "What does a VP do everyday? "

Ok...   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

If a guy did this at work, he could be reported and punished.

Tracey   August 31st, 2008 6:23 pm ET

My question is, Why didn't John McCain vet her 18 months ago to the American people? If she is so experienced and is on top of her game, he would have done that. Say what you will, Obama was vetted by the citizens of this country, period! As well as those internationally!
The media and American people know him as if they birthed him. We have 60 + days to learn about this woman, I don't think so. Not to mention, he only met her one time and slept (figuratively)with her! Great American Values. Read her bio, her greatest achievement is big oil. What about urban issues of drugs, crime, homelessness, etc. Give me a break! She is not suited to McDonald's!

Talk about sensitive. The next argument will be that Biden called Palin "she" instead of "my opponent."

CNN and McCain are looking forward to the instigating the "sexist" argument.

BREAKING NEWS – McCain just hugged Palin at a rally in Missouri. I guess he is sexist too!

William   August 31st, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Biden very much reminds me of LBJ when he was JFK's VP.

Oxigen   August 31st, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Can he compliment her without being sexist. Yes, she is young and good looking since it is Joe Biden who said it; it is sexism.
When you talk about taking women seriously, the democrats take women more seriously than the republican. Since the 1980 the democrat been putting women on major political ticket. Geraldine Ferraro was a democrat VP running mate in the 1980. Tell me a mojor republican woman that hit that miles stone in the 1980; none, zero. Hillary Clinton was the front runner in this race for quite a while and she is a woman democrat. How can you talk about democrat think women is no brainer when they are the one who introduce them to hold these big political position. What you can say is that John McCain is using a woman to try to take some of the people that was fallowing Clinton by using a woman to do so since Hillary was a woman. McCain know how a lot of Hillary's suppotters feel about her been treated unfair and pick a woman VP to see if he can get their vote very manupilative.

This entire election has turned into a CIRCUS the minute McCain announced his VP. I am not knocking on Sarah Palin's ability to be the BEST Gov. Alaska has ever seen, or how amazing her values are, or even the fact that she is a mother of five and is pro-choice. These are all great qualities she entails. Now, the real question: Is she ready to step up and quite possibly become the next President of the United States of America? President Sarah Palin. Think about that for a second. Just typing it out frightens me. I think she is a very admirable woman, just not ready to run the greatest nation in the world, not to mention is currently facing some serious issues. If she really truly loves this country and not the career gain of her own, she will allow someone who have the experience as well as time to take over this VP ticket. There are so many others out there that are qualified for this position. Please, we need someone who is willing to be in the office for the love of the country as a whole and not just the few that can benefit from short-term gain.

Barrack = Palin   August 31st, 2008 6:21 pm ET

If Joe is like every other guy in the world, he's going to get up close to Palin, the ex-beauty queen, and start babbling like he did at the convention....y'know, the whole "blood-flow to the wrong area" thing. :)

Ok...   August 31st, 2008 6:21 pm ET

I like the way the left is trying to focus on every female aspect of Palin... she is a hockey mom, she is the head of the PTA, she is good looking... Is this an attempt to use sexism as a tool to make people not like her? Looks like it. How pathetic. She has accomplished more in her political career than all the other candidates combined- and she has been a politician for a short time period. Go figure.

Loretta from California   August 31st, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Is whats her name ready to take over if something should happen to Senator McCain? Will someone please answer that question? Is she ready to be President?

vicki   August 31st, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Unbelievable! What a shame that the left, (who accuses McCain of not supporting women's rights), can think of nothing more to do than attack this woman's looks, motherhood, and call her things like a "trophy". So much for the Democrats being the party of equality! What simple minded hypocrites.

Imagine the shoe on the other foot – what if the right were making comments such as these. They are simply unacceptable.

As far as their argument about her experience, I believe it is time for the Obama campaign to take a look in the mirror....

I'm so sorry that you are all jealous that it wasn't a woman on your ticket. Blame Obama and stop being so petty.

Biden will be nothing more than moose stew in the debate with Palin. Obama looks like deer in headlights. Your one term do nothing senator looks like a preschooler up next to her. I now see a lot of hope for the Republican ticket. By the way, my family voted Hillary in the primaries. We are looking forward to voting Palin.

Cedric   August 31st, 2008 6:20 pm ET

I think this is funny. We need to refocus on the issues. The issues that matter to Americans. Jobs, health care, the mortage crisis, and lastly foreign policy. I want the focus to be on issues. I am a proud democrat that supports my canidate, and hope republicans can feel the same way about their canidate.

Keep It Real!!   August 31st, 2008 6:20 pm ET

I was at work when McCain announced Palin as his VP choice. In describing her, my girlfriend said that Palin is very pretty. When I saw her, I said, "Yeah. She is." Frankly, I think that's one of the reasons why McCain picked her. She's brings visual appeal. If you're unaware of it, politicians factor in everything imaginable when creating the party's ticket including one's beauty, age, race, sex, etc. It's all part of strategizing.

Also, acknowledging how beautiful a woman is does not subtract from her intelligence. Just like acknowledging how handsome a man is does not subtract from his intelligence. Obama has frequently been described as being handsome. I believe that even Biden said it. This in know way discredits the fact that Obama was one of the most intelligent students at Harvard Law School.

Do you think the many times McCain has called Cindy beautiful is a problem? What about when McCain suggested that his wife might participate in a clearly misogynist, bikini contest? What about the fact that McCain's ex-wife, current wife, and VP were all beauty contestants? Not to mention the "equal pay for equal work" issue. So who is really sexist? McCain or Biden?

tuff Col. Oh   August 31st, 2008 6:20 pm ET

i don't think that palin woman is all that good looking, she looks like an average white woman to me and i am a woman, and why is it sexist for biden compliment a woman, we like being complimented, can't we talk anout something more news worthy, like how obama will win in a landslide thanks to this latest politcal karl rove scheme

Republican for Obama   August 31st, 2008 6:16 pm ET

I love Joe Biden, but he needs to tread the waters carefully. One of the reason why I think McCain selected Palin is to help garner sympathy and if Biden goes after Palin too hard, it may not play well on TV. Still, he most definitely should not hold back with regard to her obvious lack of domestic and foreign policy experience and her clear non-readiness to become President.

Trang, Fremont, CA   August 31st, 2008 6:15 pm ET

Well, I think this is a pattern for Obama. Saying something positive about their opponent first before they go in the compare/contrast. W/ John McCain, it's his service to this country and they express appreciation, with Palin, this is all the positive they can come up w/ – her looks, because in principle, she agrees w/ the right wing extremists, which is scary. She already lied to us on day one regarding the Bridge to Nowhere. But Joe, please do not go there next time. You might think it's a compliment to them when you compliment their looks, but you probably offend them.

Mister D   August 31st, 2008 6:14 pm ET

This may get me a lot of grief, but any woman who is an HONEST supporter of Hillary AND WHAT SHE STOOD FOR, is guilty of sexism if they vote for McCain because of Palin. She is against everything that Hillary stands for, and, IF THEY TRULY SUPPORTED HILLARY'S POSITIONS, they would be voting for Palin only because of her sex, hence SEXISM.

Of course, if you did not really supporter Hillary's stand on issues and only backed her because she was woman, you were being sexist as well.

Just wanted to drop that in.

Really, CNN? The best you can do is report on comments of how these candidates look physically? I am more interested in their fiscal attributes. Ultimately, I hope that this whole election experience serves to educate sexist morons on what is "being sexist."

Republicans Hate America   August 31st, 2008 6:06 pm ET

McCains response to inexperience and celebrity was to select a 20 month term governor who participated in a beauty queen pageant.

Sorry McCain but her foreign policy experience shouldnot be based on how close Alaska is to Russia even though I am surprised you even knew where that is.

Her words she does not know what the VP is supposed to do and is not concerned with whats going on in IRAQ.

She was for the bridge to nowhere before she flip flopped that she was against it and that is where this ticket is going.

Palin is the one who let everyone know she was a runner up in a beauty contest. Evidently, she's very proud of her looks, otherwise, why would that matter in her interview with McCain for the vp selection process? The sexism lies with Palin who thinks her looks will get her 50% of the way in this election, with the remaining 50% all smoke and mirrors!

Joe was just having some fun on the campaign trail, which is what McCain and the Republicans have been saying the Democrats needed throughout the McCain fear and smear campaign. What happened to your sense of humor now? Also, what kind of a spokewoman does Palin have that says Obama's comments about Palin were "a disgrace and an absurd accusation"? Palin supports McCain, who has voted repeatedly against equal pay for women. Ok, I get it, telling the truth would sound disgraceful and absurd to Republicans like her.

Flabbergasted   August 31st, 2008 6:03 pm ET

We've seen Senators with extraordinary amounts of experience become less than admirable Presidents...remember Lyndon Johnson...or Richard Nixon?

Senatorial experience does not equal executive excellence. Maybe that's why the last one to get elected happened 48 years ago.

If resume is the sole determining factor that qualifies a person for the Presidency, you would certainly discount a single-term Congressman who failed in other elections as not being the right person at all for the job...especially running against a distinguished member of the Senate.

Which means, of course, you would have voted for Stephen Douglas instead of Abraham Lincoln.

this is so stupid all of the people commenting that this is "sexist" or "patronizing" or "disrespectful" to women in ANY way. Mccain's adviser was right, this is a nation of whiners.

Brian   August 31st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

I think the difference is that Biden was mocking, not joking about Palin. There *is* a difference.

And the fact that someone else may have said something sexist doesn't give Biden the right to follow suit. If this comes back to bite him, he deserves what he gets.

Nikki - NC   August 31st, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Here we go with the sexism card – i've come across pundits and bloggers and other politicians using the words "handsome' and 'good-looking' and "GQ' describing Obama and where are the cries of sexism?! BUT now when it's a woman the subject there's all of a sudden a loud siren of sexism! And if this is the case then Biden should also be cited for being sexist towards Obama – please change the title for this blog to "Biden: Palin and Obama good-looking".

Aneesh Kumar   August 31st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

It does not matter if Ms. Palin is good-looking and/or whether Mr. Biden is gorgeous. The question is: if the president is incapacitated, can the vice president take over? Ms. Palin, who was the mayor of a 7,000-person town until two years ago, is not prepared, by any stretch of the imagination. Given that Mr. McCain has made such a big deal of experience, this choice is an insult to the American people.

The McCain/Palin ticket is headed toward a spectacular defeat.

Jason in Juneau   August 31st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

It's refreshing to see some fun being had in the campaigns. I'm sure Palin is having a little fun with this. Trust me, up here in Alaska we think she's an absolute knock out. And yes she has been a good governor, although she hardly hangs out in the Capital City.

This may not have been the right time for her to rise in the party. It's a shame but she'll be battle tested for a potential 2012 run.

Biden is the kind of guy we need to be one step away from the office should anything happen. Go Obama/Biden.

Charles   August 31st, 2008 5:59 pm ET

regardless of how innocent the comment was, it was not a smart thing to say in a tight election. You can't give any ammo like that to the other side. But we knew what we were getting with Bidden and it was just a matter of time before something like this happened.

Anything said about Palin is going to be called sexism. You know if you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch. If you have to tip toe around everything you say to her and about her that is more sexist than this comment was. She is running for vp and will be subject to many comments. This is by the way the woman who called HRC a whiner.

However she looks more like McCain's daughter-in-law than Veep material when you see the two of them together.

Johnny Quest   August 31st, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Just funny how the Obama folks are attacking McCain and Palin about her experience, but a few months ago didnt like it when Obama was being attacked. Palin is a Gov, which according to what Americans have voted I believe is more experience than a senator. Most Gov, dont have foreign policy backgrounds. Bush: Gov of Texas, Clinton Gov of Ark, Reagan Gov of Cali, Carter Gov of GA. When is the last time a senator has become President, JKF.

Obama has spent his whole time in DC running for President. McCain has tried to do something for the past 20+ years, Palin has lead her state, Heck even Biden has done something.

I was/am a Clinton Supporter, and I will not vote Obama.
I am a man, I am a grad student, I am gay, and I am only 26 years old.

Hey Joe, she's not only better looking than you but she's smarter.... I think everyone should take a look at her record...She's more qualified than any of the other 3 running.... she is the only one that has had to make executive decisions, she is the only one in charge of state military, she is the only one who had to come up with a budget.

Cryston J   August 31st, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Isn't it interesting that someone who is obviously unqualified to be President has to be treated like kid gloves simply because it's a woman.

Isn't it interesting that Obama can be attacked for being too black, not black enough, good-looking, good-looking but muslim, too intelligent(as if that is bad for POTUS), and many other adjectives, yet no one is crying foul. Palin must be able to take the heat because she is already in the kitchen(no pun intended).

If we people, women and men alike, think and do our research, we would discover that Palin is very good looking, fact. She is a former beauty queen, fact. She has beautiful kids, fact. She is warm and friendly, fact. And she is not qualified to be the President of the United States, FACT.

some people will vote for McCain simply because a woman is on the ticket, just like some people are voting for Obama simply because he's black.
SOME people!

C'mon get real.

g waara   August 31st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

I remember having this strange dream that a former small town sports commentator in Alaska who was once the mayor of a small bedroom community(Wasilla) first won the governship of Alaska and then became the nominee of the Republican party for Vice President based on three things identified as "important" by the Presidential team from McCain;

She is a woman
A member of the NRA and
Has visited the weekend warriors of the Alaska National Guard on more than one occasion. (This gives me a scare thinking about the "heart beat away...)

I awoke to the sadest form of vision and strategic thinking, for any party since the famous team of Fritz Mondale and the last token VP running mate. This is how shallow McCain is ...........and since he has only "power " left in his ambition (he already has wealth and fame) do not doubt the hypocrisy and the level of disdain he actually posseses within his heart for the "little guy".

Does anyone believe that NO ONE with more ability, experience or value could be found? Mitt Romney, Huckabee, Charlie Criss from Florida. No a governor of a state with less population in it, then Phoenix, Arizona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If anyone even half believes this is any choice this year, move to Oregon, shout right to quality of life and end it all – as you are now officially without brain power. Every one.............. pray that knuckle headed folks are home sick in November- seriously.

Joe   August 31st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Face it people, the lefties love Obama regardless of his complete lack of leadership experience because he represents them and the righties love Palin regardless of her inexperience because she represents them. They really are no different from each other.....unqualified individuals being propped up by the extremists in their parties. More of the same for us level headed independents. I think I am going to puke when I enter the voting box this November!

Pat   August 31st, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Come on people.........Biden was actually giving Palin a compliment! Is this how it's going to be? Quit analyzing every little thing that comes out of Biden/Obama's mouth just looking for ways to condemn. You should be far more concerned with looking into Paiin's credentials and asking yourself if this is really the person who could take care of this country as commander if something should happen to McCain......and we know that it's very possible that could happen in the next four years. This is serious stuff folks, not a beauty contest.

KenM   August 31st, 2008 5:55 pm ET

I have voted democrat my entire life which is longer than Obummer has been around....I didn't jump ship for Reagan or any other republicans....but the negativity 'n' the misogamist attitude of ObushAgain has turned me from the democrats....I will be voting for my first republican president in over forty years as well as my first republican governor.............

Louise   August 31st, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Sarah Palin is mine, and many of my friends', new hero. I wonder if you'd be dissing her if she was put on the Obama ticket. she is a refreshing break from the normal washington politicians and is an inspiration to the younger generation and especially working mums. She is a known reformer with a huge approval rating becausee she actually does what she says she will do. I mean how many politicians have this label ?

Mccain made a genius decision with adding Sarah as his VP. We all love her and i bet she will keep getting votes brought over to the GOP ticket.

Max08   August 31st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

I think CNN goes out of their way to create controversy and all the haters of whichever party fall for it. Did those of you complaining actually read the comment. I am female and I did not take it as sexist. I can think of a lot of other things he could have said that would have clearly been sexist. He said there are differences between us beyond just our policy. I agree he should avoid comments like that because there are those who are waiting to make an issue out of anything they say.

Nick   August 31st, 2008 5:54 pm ET

Its a bit silly to characterize these comments as masoginistic. This is exactly what Bush/Cheney said about Edwards last time.
Also, this woman is the antithesis of Hillary Clinton. I am a Hillary supporter, and there is no way I would consider voting for McCain/Palin. She is dangerously conservative and stuck in last century.

Giving his acceptance speech via satellite from the disaster area? Give me a break!! Get out of the way McSame and let the REAL American heroes do their jobs when the time comes!

You disgust me! I only feel pity for Palin that she got on a God awful warmongering/big oil pockets/Bush policies TRAIN WRECK of a ticket–she may have had a political future, but not after the GOP gets blown away in an electoral landslide

A sistha thinking about Palin....   August 31st, 2008 5:51 pm ET

I am so confused...Obama's claim to international life is that he lived abroad. His claim to leadership is that he was a community activist. Please go read her bio...now this woman is a Union member, has accomplished education reform..and actually has balanced a budget...

Now, her stands on choice and gay rights scares me...but experience...Obamanics BETTER NOT go there..because let's face it if Experienced mattered Hillary would be the nominee or at least Bill Richardson....

And yes...you can hate violence against women and be a sexist....

Wake up America   August 31st, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Donna, Gv. Palin's VP nod is trivial and political pandering at its best, aimed at irrational (and thank god very rare) women who would vote for a women at any cost, even ones who are against any women issue of our time...

gigs   August 31st, 2008 5:50 pm ET

joe's comment was not sexist – get over yourselves. she is very attractive. what is sexist is when you people say that a woman looks cant even be mentioned. please

and by the way – joe i think you are good looking too!
and much more experienced and qualified than sarah palin who has done nothing to advance women's issues- joe i am a survivor of domestic violence and am grateful that you raised this horrible crime to a national issue.
now you need to fight for universal health care – it will give so many more victims the courage and security to stop the abuse in their lives when they have one less reason to be dependent on the abuser.
all victims and survivors of domestic violence should be grateful to joe biden and vote for the obama/biden ticket if for no other reason that we need a person like joe in the white house.

Jon   August 31st, 2008 5:49 pm ET

So Biden makes a self-deprecating comment and you all take it as an insult to women?

I am extremely happy to see another woman on that ticket. What I want to see, however, is a country that is so equal that all women can be subject to the same politically based attacks that men are subject to, without the attacks resulting in absurd claims of sexism. It is an insult to think that Palin should somehow be insulted from the political firestorm due to her gender. To claim that she should only furthers the gender-divide that still exists in our society.

Can someone answer this?   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh, when he found out that Palin was selected, shouted on the radio for all the world to hear "we have a BABE on the ticket, there's a BABE on the ticket!!" So, don't go trying to make something out of Biden's light-hearted comment about ALL 4 CANDIDATES, himself included in that count!

desertique   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

when did calling a woman good looking become sexist.
you mean a woman cannot be intelligent and good looking.
the later would be the sexist outlook.

by the way obama and biden are both good looking.
and both intelligent.

mccain, well not so much

D Ianni   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

I cant understand how the GOP thinks that running a state GOV for 20 mnths like Alaska that has 650K people is "executive" experiance?
My county alone in Florida has 950K people....and I would not hire our County Rep for VP of the US.
This is scary and competely irresponsible of John McCain to put our country in harms way like this.
She has very LITTLE record to speak of at all much less NO national security exposure. SHe didnt even know what a VP did a few months ago.
You cant compare her to Obama who has spent 10 years in legislature and Senate not to mention a Harvard Law School grad.
She was hired for being a women and pro-lifer. Just what we need to set us back on the enviormental and new green jobs – oil "drill now" is her moto and lets not forget about her bridge to no where which would still be under construction if the Feds agreed to fund it 100%, she only backed out because they took away some of the funding.
I look forward to the Oct VP debate in St Louis as Joe will eat her alive.

MAVARICK to a GELDING   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Before we all get a knot in our knickers, please read what the Republicans said about Palin, both on national TV.

The Republican far right is now defending the selection of Palin as the VP nominee and stating how outraged they are about comments that Palin was selected because of her gender.

So, my question to the Republicans is this:

We have a mythical male who was born in Montana, was a high school basketball star, avid hunter via helicopter, becomes Homecoming King at the local high school, leverages this into a place on the city council and subsequently becomes mayor of this village of 9,000. Then becomes the governor of Montana for 18 months and is under investigation for abuse of power as governor. Would the VP nomination have been offered to him over all the other humans that were vetted for this position??? Didn’t think so, so stop pretending that the fact that this nominee has a set of ovaries did not go into the final decision. However, you are right she is not a token, she is a political pawn.

This just in and require changes to the scenerio, Pat Buchanan on MSNBC actually called her a “girl” while Newt Gringrich said her “beauty” was a qualification for VP on F@@k the News. So, let us change our mythical male to a “handsome boy”.

Guess it is due to the fact, that at 57 my estrogen levels must be increasing, because even I find those statements patently offensive, demeaning and condescending.

Foreign observer   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

In her fundamental beliefs Palin is comparable to Ahmadinejad from Iran. People of all kinds of fundamentalism make the world a dangerous place.

Jessica   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

If she were a man he wouldn't make such a comment. I wonder if NOW and other women's rights organization will take him to task for his sexist remark. Probably not, as they let Paul Begala get away with his "she probably learned her poise and oratory skills from her beauty queen days" remark.

bk   August 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

The DNC did not comment on the all the sexist comments made about Hillary, because Dean and Pelosi wanted Obama to win. The RNC should call Obama, Biden, and the media out on comments like these. I don't care if your Rep. or Dem. Women have rights and this should not be allowed. Shame on Obama, Biden, and the media. She is smarter than Obama and Biden put together.

Christine Malloy   August 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

The Democrats have shot themselves in the foot again. Obama was so egotisical that he was afraid to pick a running mate who might get as much a following as him. Now he has just given the election to the Republicans. As much as I wanted to see the Democrats take the prize of the Presidency, Mc Cain has outsmarted Obama. He has rallied his base as well as some of the Hillary voters like myself. It would have been a slam dunk with Hillary. Now with Governor Palin he will be playing catch up and will finish last. Go Mc Cain & Palin. Yea to Hillary in 4 years!!!!

David   August 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

I am originally from a small northern town and have set many Palin'esk people in the past and just have to say what the hell were you thinking McCain. She is isolated from the realities of mainland and especially urban America, the demographics of Alaska and socioeconomic and security concerns are far less diverse and much easier to get a handle on then the US as a whole. She was still in her honeymoon period as Governor and a small town mayor is far from impressive, and she has not been vetted by the American public or it would seem even by McCain himself. Don't let this extreme right wing nutjob get her finger on the bomb, frightening, frightening thought.

Harmon   August 31st, 2008 5:46 pm ET

It was a shame to see McCain and the Republicans using a 4-month-old down syndrome baby on the campaign trail for political gains. In my opinion, I think that is child abuse. Mcshame on him.

Tamara   August 31st, 2008 5:45 pm ET

How can you be insulted by THIS article? These two guys have great comedic banter– they're REAL!

Besides, you wanna talk about sexist, and not taking a woman seriously: The Repugs brought that one one choosing "a babe on the ticket" who's not done a thing for women's rights and health issues, but instead is known as "Miss Congeniality" and a "Hockey Mom." - The nomination is the insult !!

The Nomination of Palin is The Insult to intelligent women across the world. I want a President & VP who I can respect: one who is actually more intelligent than me. It really shouldn't be THAT difficult!

bern   August 31st, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Grow up folks and cut the bs. Palin is rather attractive and I suspect that played no small part in McCain's decision to pick her. Indeed, right or wrong, folks get hired and fired every day because of looks. That is a verifiable fact. The repugs have a track record of finding attractive women to do their bidding. I guess if you can't offer substance you try to offer form. On the issues Palin is a right wing nut and all the looks in the world will not change that.

That said, Biden did absolutely nothing wrong and this is certainly NOT MISOGYNY. Get real. There is way too much at stake.

minsa   August 31st, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Having Palin is an obvious attempt to get Clinton votes. How anyone could say that she is a good appointment is beyond me. She is obviously not qualified to be vice-president. There needs to be some minimum qualifications to be appointed as a candiate at this level. Some people say that she is a good choice because she is pro-life. I have news for you, ruling on that will be a very minor part of her job. McCain could just as well have appointed anyone off the stree.

JamesDuck   August 31st, 2008 5:44 pm ET

Biden is a Neanderthal!

I am a democrat who is proudly voting for McCain!

Erik   August 31st, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Oh for crying out loud. Biden said "she and I are very different – she's goodlooking". Do you think he meant that little joke as "I'm not goodlooking" or as "She's goodlooking and thus not smart or qualified"? The latter doesn't make any sense in this context. Learn how to interpret playful remarks before getting all worked up over something supposedly sexist, people.

Old white lady for Obama   August 31st, 2008 5:43 pm ET

McCain's choice of Palin as his VP seemed just plain farcical at first, but now I have had time to learn something about her, it is also downright scary to think she could be just a heartbeat away from the Presidency. As for attracting Hillary's dejected supporters, I can't imagine any woman with an ounce of intelligence finding anything good about this ticket.
As for all these charges of sexist remarks, for pete's sake let's all lighten up. Comic relief can be therapeutic.

Fred- Philadelphia PA   August 31st, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Its so obvious that Mccain picked her only to get to HRC voters. Why else would she keep bringing up HRC. Even their own party booed their stupid and really obvious trick. He doesnt care about this country, he only cares about getting to the white house. If he truly cared about this country he wouldve picked a VP that would be ready to become commander in chief if anything was to happen to him (remember he's 71 and in poor health). EVERY woman in the US should be offended by this cheap gimmick he's trying to pull on female voters and HRC supporters. Mccain.. women aren't stupid and shame on you for trying to use one to get to the WH. As a citizen of this great nation i want to open peoples eyes and expose Mccain's selfishness and bad judgement so that America does not make the wrong decision this Nov. 4 like we did in 2000. I am a whole hearted Palin supporter. I was rooting for her before she was on anyone's radar screen, when I saw the DNC was going to dump Hillary. I think Biden was just making a mild joke on himself, no big deal. I didn't find it offensive. Actually, I'm proud of Gov. Palin's appearance. I think she shows that a woman can be attractive and accomplished. She's a firecracker, and biden better take her seriously or he'll regret it.

Unhappy Republican now for Obama   August 31st, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Limbaugh called her a "babe". Pat Buchanan called her a "princess". All the talking heads think that Joe should lay off of her in the Veep Debates. These things are FAR MORE SEXIST than this comment.

My party has been driven over a cliff.

Rob R   August 31st, 2008 5:41 pm ET

I suppose anti-Obama people will try to spin this as Biden being sexist – but the reality is he was poking fun at himself. He commented on Obama being good-looking too. Hillary is a force in politics and nobody can question her credentials to be President – even though I have always been an Obama supporter I cannot question Hillary's credentials. Palin is no Hillary and women who care about women's issues should be able see right through this. I agree that CNN is trying to stir up trouble here when there is not. It's sad. Biden really needs to challenge her in their debate and not hold back cause she's a woman. He needs to challenge her on the issues and I think he can do that without having to include any gender talk at all. The bottom line is this – this was a knee jerk reaction by McCain that shows more than ever a lack of judgement. God help us if he wins.

Brooke   August 31st, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Speaking of equal pay. McCain's female staff makes more, on average, than the male staff. Obama's female staff makes, on average, $6 000 less than the male staff. Again, McCain/Palin have been doing the things that Obama has only talked about.

Kim, CA.   August 31st, 2008 5:39 pm ET

I am a first time voter (D) I thought the possibility of Mccain being president would just be 'business as usual' but as a woman I am now scared. If Mccain is elected into office and something happens to him, she is suppose to lead this country? I am appauled, and I am afraid.

His reasoning for not supporting the Fair Pay Act also had nothing to do with not believing in equal pay, but only that the legislation itself was not the way to go about it because it would cause unnecessary litigation.

Winston   August 31st, 2008 5:38 pm ET

At this point in time no matter what anyone says it will be taken wrong. This is not about men or women..or the color of their skin...or looks.;;or how many toes they have. It's about who will do the best job as the leader of our country. If you are voting for someone because of anything other than that, you are a fool.

calling obama and biden sexist is RIDICULOUS.
BIDEN WROTE AND OBAMA SUPPORTED THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT, WHICH MCSHAME OPPOSED. equal pay for equal work, a woman's right to choose...hello!
MCSHAME IS SEXIST: cheated on his first wife to marry a young heiress who he later called a c*** in public and offered her in a wet tshirt contest- his political record is anti-women. He's using Palin as a shield against that...give me a break!
Biden also said Obama was good looking, by the way...

How about some real news CNN, like Palin's flip flopping on the bridge to nowhere, on her relationships with BIG OIL, on her being investigated, on why she would hide her pregnancy from the public for so long, how SHE SAID SHE HAS NO INTEREST IN/UNDERSTANDING OF IRAQ, she didin't even know what a VP does...
PLEASE SOME REAL REPORTING ON PALIN CNN !!

Kristina   August 31st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

This is appalling. First with Hillary Clinton and now with Sarah Palin, every time a woman is involved, the entire game changes. Suddenly, it's ok for her looks, clothing and nicknames in high school to come up. This is only the cherry on top of what the Democratic party has already done to Hillary Clinton that has completely alienated me from my own party. Most former Democratic women I know, myself included, are now planning to vote Republican, based on the party's incredulous treatment of Clinton. Sarah Palin being the VP candidate only helps matters.

I'm also disgusted by the politicking that Obama has done to twist Mccain and now Palin's policies on equal pay for equal work. Not being in favor of the Equal Rights Amendment does not equate believing men and women should be paid differently.

The comment was self-depricating and to vote for McCain – the man who called your precious Hillary Clinton a "B" and said that Janet Reno was Chelse Clinton's father is the most idiotic thing in the world. Misogynistic is putting an unqualified women on the ticket to get your "Maverick" title back when you really wanted to chose your best friend who happened to be a liberal democrat. Do some research people, seriously.

Obama/Biden is the only change ticket. I agree with Donna's comments. People you have got to open your eyes and ears this time around and go for HOPE and not fear.

Mrs. Palin is the Rep. VP pick. A person

Mr. Biden is the Dem. Pick. A person

People we need to stop using gender/race when talking about and yes even criticizing our candidates. The policies and issues are the key to getting this country back on the right track not ones gender or race.

Ted   August 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

CNN can you post a story about what happened on Days of Our Lives since you've decided to not report on anything substantial?

VERY misleading headline.

kathleen   August 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

HERE WE GO...LET THE EGO GO AND THE O-METER BEGIN! LETS DEBATE

VOTE SARAH!

Spin This CNN   August 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

I love the comment. That's about all Palin has going for herself. At least half the soccer mom's and little league mom's in America have higher secondary education degrees and experience than Sarah Palin. They just choose to manage their family's and fight for all the things that Sarah Palin oppose!

Napoleon Complex   August 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

No need to worry about Ms. Palin. She'll be back home in Alaska for good in about 65 days.

Obama and Biden will win easily in November.

Lili, FL   August 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

This is Biden talking down to women!

Nobama 08

Suzy from Ohio.   August 31st, 2008 5:30 pm ET

WOW. The title makes this story out to be something it's not. Hopefully people will actually read the story.

Cnn, go back to journalism school.

Sexist? Biden?   August 31st, 2008 5:30 pm ET

There is a good probability that is why she was chosen to be VP. She seems to be proned to the second level VP now, Ms. Alaska then. What is going on here? McCain chose her to equalize many things but could we get some credible news worthy stuff here people!

Cheerio   August 31st, 2008 5:30 pm ET

Joe Biden wrote the Violence Against Women Act, which has helped countless women get a second chance at life.

John McCain voted against Equal Pay for Equal Work. And he called his wife the c-word.

Now, who is sexist?

LA   August 31st, 2008 5:29 pm ET

We are in the middle of a category 5 hurricane, and this is news?! This is why corporate media is the worst!

Rick K   August 31st, 2008 5:29 pm ET

McCain called Palin his "soul mate" on TV this morning. (See Politico)

If references to Palin's female-ness are newsworthy now, where's this 'story?'

Biden was attempting to be self-deprecating, and while I think this will be treated as a trap throughout this highly partisan process, in governing, humor like this will do less to hurt this country than humor about bombing other countries or killing their civilians with cigarettes.

As a people, do we or don't we want our politicians constantly tip toeing? Do we want them to lighten up, but reserve the right to be offended by any attempt to put a smile on our face?

...or do have we already made up our mind, and every single thing that comes out of their mouth either makes our point or is discarded?

wow!!!!   August 31st, 2008 5:29 pm ET

good looking!.....that's about IT

Mo, NC   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Geez, it was just a little lighthearted bantering!

me   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Stacey, the Obama campaign threw racism around for a year.

Chris Durham North Carolina   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Some of the people posting on here are way too extreme! It's ok to be sensitive to sexism, but it's completely wrong to say that every statement made about any woman is such... The McCain/Palin agenda is completely sexist, but some of you guys don't even recognize this, instead of looking at the people look at the policy and you'll see some real life discrimination! Get it together and become an informed citizen and not just an angry activist...you have to balance your anger with understanding, ingnorant wisdom is no wisdom at all! Get it together!

Judith   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Obama and Biden:
Do not go there – there is no way discussing a woman's looks can end well for you, no matter how much humor or self-deprecation might be mixed in. Drop the topic.
Believe me – women in the workplace do not want to hear it, whether favorable or not, whether intended in some way as a compliment or not.
I want you to win. No comments about her looks, just focus on capabilities and judgment.

Steve - southern Illinois   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

It doesn't matter what he says about Palin. Someone will brand it as a sexist remark.

Richard, FL   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

McCain used all of his "experience" from more than 20 years in Washington and his "country first" approach to select a running mate with ZERO experience in federal government and less than 700 DAYS experience in state government.

It's just another example of McCain's lack of judgment.

lynn   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

These guys and CNN will say ANYTHING now to try and get the woman's vote. Before Mc Cain's ACTION, (not just phony words) they were the same sexist pigs that they have always been and this kinda of exchange proves it.

This is exactly the same style of of dismissing Palin as not being a valid choice, that they did to Clinton. Keep it up you sexist jerks and watch Sara Palin walk away with the job that she has earned. In today's world it really is easy to verify the BS that gets posted by you and your CNN mentor's lies and slanted PR pieces.

RyanD.   August 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Rush and the rest of the GOP'ers have spent 2 days calling Palin a "girl" and a "babe", yet WATCH as the TROLLS crawl in here and accuse Biden of sexism for making a self-depreciating joke.

So predictable.

Mike   August 31st, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh called her a babe. But Biden's self-deprecating joke is sexist.

OK, sure.

Realist   August 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative radio chat show host, exulted, “We’re the ones with a babe on the ticket”

And so the person who cornered McCain into this choice couldn't find somthing LESS SEXIST to say????

Citizen Watch   August 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

This is best CNN can do with all of the critical events occuring right now. This is currently its lead story on the PT. Playing the racism card is political suicide, but playing the sexism card gets a few gaffes from the good ole boys. Chuckle, chuckle, wink, wink. Why is Palin's life story not just as powerful and deserving of our respect as Michelle's or Hillary's. Michelle got all kinds of acclaim for showing her "family" values. Criticizing those same values in Palin is clearly hypocritical,

Poetic Justice   August 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Lighten up! No matter what they do they are attacked by some ignorant part of the Republican machine. It is McCain who should be questioned regarding his loyalty to his wives and his penhant for beauty queens, no matter how much substance they lack!

Disenchanted   August 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Unfortunately, yet another example of how Sexism is more acceptable than racism. Comments about the beauty of another running mate is just downright condescending. Elitism and bigotry from the Obama campaign folks, this time in print, quoted by the nominees themselves. I hardly think this is how you make a good impression with over 18 million votes out there up for grabs.

Sheree Stachura   August 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

So it starts, they sure can't take a woman seriously. It is all about her looks. It is truly insulting, focusing on her looks instead of focusing on her ideas and platforms. This will show women where we still are in the scheme of things. Stay out of the spotlight, or we will talk about your looks, because women have nothing of substance to really talk about. Disgusting. Obama lost my vote, and hopefully every other intelligent "good looking" woman.

Dan J   August 31st, 2008 5:25 pm ET

Cheesy pandering. That's all I heard.

Billy   August 31st, 2008 5:25 pm ET

This but not a word on Palin's credentials or anything about her ongoing abuse of power investigation.

CNN = tabloid journalism.

B. Thompson   August 31st, 2008 5:25 pm ET

CNN, I have been a very strong supporter of yours but lately with some of these stories I feel as though this is the FOX Network. Please post the issues at hand. This election is entirely too important to have you side track on these NO ISSUES.

Staci-LA   August 31st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Well since we are not talking news...I think both Obama and Biden are fine! i told my husband when Biden ran on stage last week..."I hope you look as good at 65" Please people don't make me have to look at McCain for 4 years!!

MarioB. from Berlin   August 31st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

I do love the two of them. They are great.
Hey guys, if you are angry about this great sense of humour...
Why do you never shout if McCain tries to be funny and tries to give a portion of humour??? You find it okay.

This is okay as well. It's great. I love them and will enjoy them, being the Commander in chief and the VP vor the coming 8 years. :)

Moderate and Balanced   August 31st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Already the sexist remarks begin!!! I doubt very seriously if she was a man that he'd be talking about how she looked! So Biden and Obama start making jokes about how she looks as serious voters want honest differences in policy (She is NOT against equal pay for equal work as they claim). This type of talk will backfire on Obama/Biden. Biden especially since he has a history of it.

Dill   August 31st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I donot think that Mrs. Palin is experienced enough to be a heartbeat away fromt he leader of the free world. Is this the person that you believe would be able to guide our great ntion through, a terror attack, nuclear threats, global warming, Russian polices, China policies, dealing with Iran, the Iraq War, fair trade, fair treatment of USA workers and the economy, equal pay for women, immigration, education, the list goes on and on. If Mr. McCain loves the country, he knows he is 72 years old and he might have to step down so he is comfortable about handing the free world over to Mrs. Palin, that is FRIGHTENING to me, becaue even the most experienced leader has ahuge responsibility, I just don't think she is up to the job.

t.baker   August 31st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

common sense
"This guy (Senator Joe Biden) obviously has no respect for women."

Do some research and you'll see he's a champion for woman's rights!

Ignorance abounds in these parts ....... and I bet CNN will yet again not post a comment with truth in it!

me   August 31st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

Hey bo, I take it you'll believe anything? No wonder you support Obama.

If the Obama campaign or CNN go after Palin the way they did Hillary, they will be labeled sexist once and for all. Campbell Brown FREAKED out Friday night. Ridiculous.

Realist   August 31st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Go ahead and dissect every word that Biden says... he was being self-effacing.

I guess since McCain handed this election to Obama you'll have nothing better to do than fester over Biden calling an opponent good looking, nice person, etc.

lou   August 31st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

This is a story?? When the entire south east is about to be devastated...C'mon CNN I know a close race makes better ratings...But really? Is this where we are going now??

JT   August 31st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

How about the fact that Palin was for the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against it. No way no how a MAVERICK! A political flip flopper.

Stacey   August 31st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Love how this is "news". Who gives a crap? Doesn't change the fact that she is a ridiculous insult to women. Throw "sexism" around all you want–bottom line is that JOHN MCCAIN is a sexist by USING women this way and it won't be long before everyone knows it.

Jin   August 31st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

If you needed any more evidence that Joe Biden, who was simply awful to Anita Hill when he chaired the Judicial Inquiry, is out of touch; then his comment should do it. Have you ever heard him say anything about his male counterparts like: Boy, he sure is good looking. Bye, bye, Biden

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 31st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Now that was silly, Joe. I'm a supporter but there's enough substance here to challenge her on. Like equal pay, like her pro-life stand, like her anti-environmental views, like her lack of exposure to the issues facing Americans across this country, like her lack of foreign policy experience. It cracked me up when someone suggested that the fact that her son is going to Iraq is part of her foreign policy experience. That means we have a lot of people in this country with enough foreign policy experience to be president.

Or those that say she's a mother of five so that gives her management experience. Would a father of five also be given that credit for management experience?

CC Reston VA   August 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

What is sexism here now? Is that why you republicans actually selected her for the vp job? If she can't take good remarks like Obama does when they say he is good looking then send her back to Alaska if they want her back.

Deb, Allentown, PA   August 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

It's amusing that none of the PUMA/McCain supporters and Republicans found anything remotely disturbing about McCain offering up Cindy for the Miss Buffalo Chip Contest, but Biden pays Palin a compliment and it's sexist and offensive?

Wow....just wow.

San Diego, California   August 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Sexism is alive and well. McCain/Palin 08.

t.baker   August 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

The great Blowhard Rush Limbaugh can exclaim to the glee of right wing nut jobs that 'we have a hotty on the ticket' and that's ok -- and somehow this is sexist?

JEE   August 31st, 2008 5:19 pm ET

Do they realize how condescending and sexist that sounds? Seriously... She's good looking??!!!???.....and a governor, and a mayor, and the Commissioner of an important committee in Alaska. Biden will come off like a condescending, sexist pig at the VP debates. Oh wait, he's already started.

lol   August 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

sexism is still thriving over at the dnc, and obama's campaign. that comment brings back the memories of hillary being judged on what she wore. (like that mattered) obama messiah groupies, if roe v wade wasn't overturned during the bush/cheney error it never will be. senate has to vote on that, and it will never happen, so quit using your fear tactics! mccain/palin 08, hillary 2012!

Just Wondering   August 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

So let me get this straight:

It's OK to have an inexperienced Democratic presidential nominee, but not an inexperienced Republican vice-presidential nominee?

independentmind   August 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

great sense of humor, with truth. theses guys are good together. GOP is imploding, and i am going to enjoy watching that party disappearing into the history books. on a positive note for john mccain? he has judgement, just not good judgement. sad for a man who used to have a sharp wit.

Unhappy Republican now for Obama   August 31st, 2008 5:15 pm ET

Unnecessarily provocative headline, shame on CNN!

mike   August 31st, 2008 5:15 pm ET

I saw that on the Obama website, which has all of his events streamed. I thought it was funny, Biden connects with the audience, very warm person. The crowds love him!!!
These two are already connecting with voters, in those small setings, in a real humble way. Obama, also, looks like he feels more comfortable. I am telling you all, this ticket is already being underestimated by the media, but it is worth noting they are connecting, with small and big crowds. Definte chemistry there!

Uncle Sam   August 31st, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Brought to us by the man who thought his running mate was clean and articulate. :-(

ms. indpendent   August 31st, 2008 5:14 pm ET

This focus on looks is a cheap shot at women from both the Barack Biden B squares. This patronizing attitude toward her good looks is trying to hint that she is no brains. She definitely seems to supersede B1 in brains and charm, as the coming days will tell. I was leaning toward the b squares. But after these cheap shots, I will consider the maverick who was not intimidated by a woman as his political mate.

J Hallmark   August 31st, 2008 5:14 pm ET

That's what I love about Biden. He's funny, besides being smart and knowledgeable about foreign affairs. Obama has a keen sense of humor also and I'm one of those Kool-Aid drinking supporters of his.

Go ahead Joe, and say anything you want and we will forgive any "so called gaffes" the press can dig up.

Can't wait for these two to get in the White House.

Nana   August 31st, 2008 5:13 pm ET

whew! when I saw the title of this article my heart jumped. I thought, I hope he didn't make that statement in a way that could be misconstrued as demeaning. Thank God he didn't.

"You are gorgeous!” a female supporter in the audience shouted out. Biden asked her to repeat it into the microphone so his wife at home would hear." LOL

Take it from a girl in her 20's here, you are gorgeous Joe.

O'BIDEN 08!

Just down to looks, what else does a woman have to offer???
Shame on you guys...you just showed how much change you plan to
make!! Or not!

common sense   August 31st, 2008 5:12 pm ET

This guy (Senator Joe Biden) obviously has no respect for women. Wasn't he the one that made the "articulate" comment about Barack Obama in the beginning of the race. He suffers from hoof in mouth disease. It's just a matter of time before we see some more outbreaks of it.

Marty Pacino Chicago Il   August 31st, 2008 5:12 pm ET

This just displays how they are both misogynists and chauvinists. When both off a teleprompter Biden and Obama can only mention a womans looks. They have nothing credible to destroy her with so they just talk about her looks cause that is how they view woman just by her looks. Keep voting for liars, cowards, and the Russians. Me personally I will vote for the USA.

McCain/Palin 08

Now this offends me as much as the sweetie comment! Women can not be smart and attractive? Obama made a big mistake ignoring half the democrats. I never voted for Hillary because she was a woman, I voted for her because she was the best candidate. I did not want to vote for McCain, Sarah may give me cause to rethink that. The good old boys are alive and well, and still trying to put women down.

Brandon   August 31st, 2008 5:09 pm ET

I found that hilarious! And jam-packed with truthiness...

He has foreign policy experience + 36 years in the Senate... she has good looks.

But I bet there will be a woman's group SOMEWHERE that calls that comment "sexist"...

nate   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

His quip was self-deprecating and charming. Your headline implies it as sexist. Sorry but this old writer knows that game.

bob   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

I only hope that Obama's camp doesn't slip up and makes a remark that will hurt them during the campaign. They should leave that up to the bloggers.

For all of the democratic women and fence sitters that will vote for Mc Cain because of his female running mate. I hope they realize that she is a McCain policy supporter which puts her in the same boat as Bush and if McCain is elected, she will be another puppet added to the show just like Rice. It doesn't matter how intelligent she is. You are only going to be as smart as the party you work for!

Dawn   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

That is probably what Mc Cain was thinking too. Biden just said it.

Lame story   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

CNN, are you trying to stir something up posting stories like these?

Why don't you stick with the substance.

Isn't this a NEWS organization?

Jon   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

This will rank right up with Biden's comments on how "clean" Obama is.

Joe From Ohio   August 31st, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Here we go... the "sexist" label will be thrown everywhere this election. Change the headline CNN! The media just can't help themselves with stirring up this propaganda.

Paul   August 31st, 2008 5:06 pm ET

These two guys are so annoying – McCain and Palin are a breath of fresh air after being bombarded with images of Obama and Biden. Well arrogance and ego still appear to be at the top of the Obama/Biden agenda. Leave it to an idiotic Joe Biden after all of the talk of sexism in the campaigns to make a comment on his opponents physical appearance. WHAT A JOKE THESE TWO ARE – WAKE UP AMERICA.

Keith   August 31st, 2008 5:06 pm ET

Glad to see Barack having a little fun over this, but we really need to attack the living heck out of this disgraceful, insulting pick.. Palin is a worthless neo-conservative whack and is way way way worse than Bush. Look at her record and it'll tell the story plain as day.

Obama/Biden 08 and 12!

Donna   August 31st, 2008 5:04 pm ET

no, Senator Biden is not sexist. No, Senator Biden is not trivializing Ms. Palin's candidacy. No, Senator Biden is not being patronizing.

pdixon   August 31st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

It really blows my mind that Palin, a woman, can be so opposed to women's rights. We are not talking about special rights for women, but equal rights. As a black woman, I can understand some of the arguments against affirmative action, but opposing equal pay for equal work? Opposing a woman's right to choose? I don't get her and she will not get my vote!
