The Republican convention is slated to start on Monday.
The Republican convention is slated to start on Monday.

ST PAUL, Minn. (CNN) – Two Republican officials tell CNN “substantial” changes to the Republican National Convention program will be announced Sunday because of Hurricane Gustav.

One option on the table is delaying the planned Monday opening of the convention, both sources said, though one of them said “that has not been decided. We need a few more hours to look at all of the contingencies. But there will be some substantial adjustments.”

Already, the White House has said President Bush is unlikely to come. Other officials involved in the convention planning said it has already been decided that Mr. Bush will not attend, and instead is likely to address the convention’s Monday session, if there is one, via satellite. First Lady Laura Bush is scheduled to attend.

The final decisions will be made after top McCain campaign aide Rick Davis meets Sunday with convention planners in St. Paul. Shaping those decisions will be briefings Senator McCain has received in the past 24 hours from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, FEMA Director David Paulison and several Gulf Coast governors. “It’s a dire outlook and we need to make some changes,” one McCain campaign official said. “But this has never happened before to anyone’s convention so we need some time to touch all the bases.”

Put off the convetion, delay formally accepting the nomination, continue to accept the growing private contributions to his campaign, and get the public financing when he does accept. Beet Obama at his own game.

Go McCain.

I wonder if Rev. Hagee considers this the "wrath of God because of sin" as he did Katrina. Maybe God saw sin in the gop and decided to disrupt their party?
This is serious business folks- and we must have CHANGE from all these fanatics.
I pray for the people who have been and will be effected by this storm.

Wyatt   August 31st, 2008 12:35 pm ET

I'm curious to hear what those conservatives who suggested Katrina decimated New Orleans because it was a bedlam of sin and homosexuality have to say about a hurricane now possibly ruining their convention?

Perhaps God isn't happy they're facilitating the destruction of His creation through pollution and war?

Pharrell   August 31st, 2008 12:32 pm ET

I am outraged that Wolf Blitzer would allow Senator Dodd to go on and on about how the FEDERAL govt was totally responsible for the Katrina disaster, when anyone who had any real connection to the gulf coast, recognized that the NO Democratic Mayor and LA Governor at the time were the main characters who mismanaged the situation.
(Remember that the way it was handled in MS was entirely different than NO!)

This showed me (again) Wolf's total leaning towards the left and the Democratic party and he demonstrates absolutely no concern about a pending horrific situation in order to promote his own political agenda.

CNN does a great job covering real news, but I can't stomach, and won't watch any political coverage by Blitzer. We lost two homes in Katrina and I just don't want to see Wolf turn everything into a Republican bash.

James Carville   August 31st, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Mike   August 31st, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Why is Chertoff reporting to McBush? Did I miss the election? Is not Bush still supposed to be in charge? OOOHHH I get it. Lets make McBush look Presidential.

Kevin   August 31st, 2008 12:28 pm ET

It's pretty ironic they are in this situation, given that one wacko evalgelical telling people to "pray for rain" at the DNC not that long ago. Poor choice of words, irony, or whatever… The GOP should reschedule the convention for a week, this is an imminent disaster in a city that was destroyed, no one need to see Republicans party as a city drowns.

Walter   August 31st, 2008 12:27 pm ET

The Republican convention is irrelevant. It will just be a multi-day infomerical for the most flawed moral specimen to ever run for the Presidency.

The convention will tell you nothing about the central feature of McCain's life, which most people think was his POW experience. More significant is what he did when he got home.

McCain cheated on the wife who had endured that imprisonment with him while she was battling a crippling illness. He then left her for a multi-millionaire home-wrecker 17 years younger than himself.

I would wager that a majority of the American people don't know that about McCain. And they sure wont learn it from the Convention of from McCain's media lapdogs.

SB for BO   August 31st, 2008 12:26 pm ET

The Republican evangelicals (Dobson, others) prayed for rain to pour down on Obama's speech in Denver. Now look who may have shorten their convention because of a storm. This country needs to come together and stop using the Lord's name in vain. I PRAY that the folks in New Orleans and the gulf region are spared any hurt from this storm. This is what true Christians do!

Katrina victims are victims all over again, victims of McCain/Bush politics.

Charlie Bell   August 31st, 2008 12:21 pm ET

I saw that the Republicans are considering turning their convention into a telethon to raise money for Gustav disaster relief, the Red Cross, etc.

What would be really nice is if McCain and Obama could come together and do this (maybe the RNC could invite him?, or maybe neutral ground would be better). Wouldn't it be something to see McCain, Obama, Bidden and Sara (and maybe the Clintons) all onstage together to do something like this … to rise above the fray and selfishness and turn this impending disaster into a new day for our country???

Rick Warren could be the MC

Swarna Srinivas   August 31st, 2008 12:21 pm ET

It is a belief that when you want to hurt someone you might be the one to get hurt. Republicans wanted ir to pour and desired a deluge on the Obama speach. God is blessing them with what they desired for Democrats by spoiling their convention. We do not want the people of the affected states to suffer though.

That's a good idea, the Republicans don't want the nation to remember thier failers of Katrina. John McCain; More of the same!

Only 2 weeks ago evangicals were praying for rain on Obama's speech outdoors. Now there convention is kaput. Watch out for the bad Karme you wish on others, it bounces back. God Bless our neighbors in Louisiana, and keep them safe.

Anonymous   August 31st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

I just watched your show focusing on the Republician National Convention. One of the commentors was Fred Thompson, former Republican Presidential Candidate. He had the nerve to compare Barack Obama's government experience with MS. Palin's experience stating that she has more. Based on that analogy, it would appear that Ms. Palin should have run for President rather than him because she has more government experience than him!!!

Morgan   August 31st, 2008 12:12 pm ET

So basically they're pulling the plug on their convention because they don't want the negative PR. It isn't a gesture of respect for the people from New Orleans to cancel the convention. It is solely a question of whether people will be reminded of who let New Orleans down three years ago. I think it's disgusting that they think people will somehow forget what Bush did just by changing the date of their convention.

ML - California   August 31st, 2008 12:05 pm ET

The Republican Convention should be postponed due to Gustav.
The focus needs to be on New Orleans and help needed where necessary. This is not a party time!!!!

I found the profile on McCain to be very scarey. This is the man who could be president. Like I say very very scarey.

David   August 31st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

It is funny because the GOP ripped Obama and the DNC for having roman pillars at Invesco Field. If you look at the RNC it looks like you are at the Death Star waiting for Darth Vader to come out and speak. To bad Cheney is not going to be there, it was perfect for him

Mo   August 31st, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Conservatives prayed for rain on day fourth of Democratic Convention so that Obama's speech would be distrupted. But what a irony is that their Convention is going to be disturbed?I hope they will learn lesson from this that they won't own GOD!!!

The media is so unbelievably biased they are becoming almost unwatchable. All the pundits on CNN are talking about how inappropriate it would be to allow Republicans to go on with their convention and attack democrats. They say that in one breath and than CNN puts Chris Dodd on who tears into Republicans with a vengeance, next comes Roland Martin who always attacks and attacks, but he's a Christian so it's alright. So let me get this straight CNN, it's appropriate for Dems to have their convention and today attack and attack, but Republicans are bad, they can't have their convention, and they certainly can't defend themselves against people like Dodd, and that idiot Martin. Got it, I used to be a Democrat, this candidate and the way the DNC are behaving makes me ashamed.

Venus   August 31st, 2008 11:59 am ET

Yup!

GOP was soo busy trying to bash the DNC all last week and now look!!!

He,he,he,he,he…

Where is that person that wanted people to pray for rain for Obama's convention speech?

Vopher   August 31st, 2008 11:57 am ET

How convenient that Gustav is churning towards New Orleans for Bush and Cheney, the two great pariahs of the Republican party, and both huge liabilites for the party in November. Conspiracy anyone?

Indiana Voter   August 31st, 2008 11:54 am ET

This is hysterical! Why would Bush stay home from the convention due to a hurricane? He didn't pay any worthwhile attention to Katrina! Like he really cares about the people down south….

I think it's great he isn't going to be at the convention in person. Such support for the ticket!

Ralph   August 31st, 2008 11:53 am ET

No Bush, No Cheney, No more.

Cynthia   August 31st, 2008 11:52 am ET

Phil Newton from Murphy, Oregon   August 31st, 2008 11:51 am ET

A marvelous and convenient excuse to keep Bush and Cheney away from the convention.

Brilliant!

Maggie   August 31st, 2008 11:50 am ET

I was really looking forward to the convention. It makes you wonder… If James Dobbs and his followers hadn't prayed for rain on the democratic convention, would the republican convention be going through the effects of Hurricane Gustav? You reap what you sow you know? Never use the Lords name in vain; which is one of the Ten Commandments. Shame on you Mr. Dobbs. Hopefully no one is killed for your blasphemy.

Chad in Cincinnati   August 31st, 2008 11:50 am ET

God help the people of New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast.

But, isn't it ironic that Gustav comes knocking to interrupt the convention of the people who brought you the Katrina response?

jewel   August 31st, 2008 11:47 am ET

Despite the the party buisness. I think this is great news. I think it would not be wise not to celebrate while close to a million americans are displaced from their homes. It also has to be mentioned that there were people in the republican party who openedly called on people to pray for rain when Barac Obama anounced that he would be excepting his nomination in an open roof stadium. Funny how things turned out.

Bigbubba   August 31st, 2008 11:46 am ET

I see that the current Republican Leadership (there may be some sarcasm in that) is using this weeks hurricane to avoid the convention. After McCain's inspired ( Dang Sarcasm button must be stuck) choice of Palin as the single most qualified woman in the entire Republican Party (not again), I wonder how many other members will suddenly decide that Gustav is forcing them to miss the convertion.
I could see the Governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal, after being slapped with this VP choice, saying he hadf pressing duties elsewhere.
I could see all the fine women who have thought that being qualified for the job would give them a chance such as Condolezza Rice, Kay Baily Hutchinson, Marsha Blackburn, Shelly Moore Capito, M Jodi Rell, Christine Todd Whitman and all the rest, saying this is indeed the best choice. But these fine Ladies just might have things to do in their own states, what with a hurricane coming.
And I could see folks like J C Watts, Tommy Thompson, General Petraeus, Colin Powell, Rick Perry, James L Jones, Tommy Franks
and Newt Gingrich thinking, "She is indeed much more qualified than I am to be one heart beat from commanding America in a time of crisis. Too bad I can't be at the convention; there is Gustav coming."

Darn that Gustav

NPA   August 31st, 2008 11:46 am ET

Is it not ironic that this may be the answer to Dobson's prayer, that asked for rain on the DNC? I hope nobody gets hurt. But I can't help seeing the irony of this.

Mopy   August 31st, 2008 11:45 am ET

At least someone is going to do something. The Dems in the Do Nothing Congress is just going to sit and laugh at New Orleans.

John in DC   August 31st, 2008 11:41 am ET

One smart move would be the table the typical convention format into a mix of prayer vigil (evangelical vote), fund raising (moderates & independents vote), criticizing of government's past response (change vote), and policy for protecting our nation from all threats, natural and man-made (conservative vote?).

Just a thought. I'm voting for Obama/Biden so I really don't have a horse in your stable, but you might as well make it a tough choice for people.

Gary Chandler in Canada   August 31st, 2008 11:40 am ET

Anyone else think Karma has come back to bite the GOP in the arse? We have had tons of storms, floods, and other natural disasters over the last 8 years and now suddenly the GOP wants to help. I have another idea lets follow McCain's policy of stopping earmarks to make sure that the vicitims get no relief. I think this is a harsh reminder of the failed establishment that has run this government over the last 8 years. On one last note, isnt it funny that there were ads from conservative groups asking for rain during the DNC convention and look at what happens durning the GOP convention.

I'm confused. The RNC Convention is in Minneapolis. Gustav is approaching New Orleans. Air Force One is not going to fly Bush into New Orleans for Bush to stand on the shore waving his fist at the storm. Bush supposedly fixed the Federal Emergency Management Agency. So why do Bush and Cheney have to Stay in DC? So either Bush and Cheney are not really wanted in Minneapolis, or we really need to upgrade the quality of Geography training in America.

Puffy   August 31st, 2008 11:21 am ET

I'm a christian but it seems funny to me that the radical right wing had all their members praying for rain. Look what has happened to the republicans!!! I'm soooo scared of McCain's irrastional judgements and this women who has her picture taken in fatigues with a machine gun in her hand. I'm just soooo scarred for our nation. I DO NOT want anymore wars and it looks like she is just as much a warmonger as McCain!!! WE NEED to talk and communicate with the world and not bomb, bomb and bomb somemore!!!!! She also appears to be part of the very far radical right wing–almost white surpremists type groups. Scares me for my country and grandchildren!!!

'To all of you christian republicain .When you pray for bad luck to your opponent the bad luck return to those who pray for it. 'New Orleans peoples didn't deserved what happen to them again. But this time hope that Bush administration will be more effective than 3 years ago.
God protect New Orleans.

faxbot882   August 31st, 2008 11:17 am ET

As an American I pray for the safety of all people of the gulf states who may be affected by this killer storm. One thing I'm sure many may be gratefull for is that this time this administration may actually GET IT. Bush had to be shown a vidio before he was promted to act during Katrina Lets hope this time they get it right . The convention should take place ,In itself it is not in harms way some of the speakers may need to be replaced due to their need to look after their states during this crisis. Jihn McCain needs to be able to accept the partys nomination and for the party to meet this newcomer Palin.

REG in AZ   August 31st, 2008 11:16 am ET

Possibly one change that is needed is beyond the point of being able to change it. How do you react to something like McCain’s selection of Palin for VP? Maybe call him a 'dirty old man'? Seriously, what the selection of Gov Sarah Palin as McCain’s running mate does, without discrediting her, is draw more attention to John McCain’s health, age and mental status. At 72 years old, with a history of melanoma and signs of some mental deterioration the question is, how long will John McCain remain functional and are they then really asking us to vote for Palin as president? McCain’s medical history, his physical appearance and his many blunders when speaking make that a very real and serious question with the considerable likelihood that, if he were to win the election, she would be taking over at some point. With all of that considered, the next obvious question is, should John McCain even be considered?

Re. the ‘dirty old man’ remark, to quote Senator McCain, ‘you have to have a sense of humor’ and ‘it was only a joke’ in referring to his obvious preference for good looks over experience for his VP. Yet the rest stated is very serious and considering his personal status the question, are they really asking us to vote for Palin for President, is simply a valid and real concern. Maybe the real change needed is at the top of the ticket.

Kjetil   August 31st, 2008 11:16 am ET

That a President cant come and support the GOP candidate just show how bad the gop and Bush handle crises and they think that if they just chicken away people will forget they cant solve difficult times and situations. Its a shame that Bush tries to hide and dont dare to support his candidate McCain. The twin gop dont fool anyone.

ricardo williams   August 31st, 2008 11:15 am ET

Sounds like another excuse. I could understand President Bush absence, but Dick Cheney, Come on, I don't McCain really wants any of them at the convention.
McCain scares me. He picked his VP like his usually one-liner quck fix made in China solution. He only met this woman once, but she is pro-abortion, she is a member of NRA, she is liked by religious people. Then she makes her first speech and she starts pampering female voters saying Hilary put 18 million cracks. Obama doesn't run as a Black man, who cares if she is a woman. Stick to the issues. McCain quick-fix pick is a joke. I would have said Romney is a sound choice, but this quick fix is just a slap in the face just like his health care proposal and education no solution strategy. Four more years of what? George Bush? 10% change? I wish McCain had come before Bush ruined everything.

rodeo   August 31st, 2008 11:14 am ET

Fitting end to the Republican madness. They were praying for rain to disrupt the Dems and they got another hurricane instead. Karma, anyone? My understanding that the levees and pumps in NO do not work and will not protect the residents. Perfect. McCain is on his way into the storm to bloviate…shows his astonishing lack of judgement. He's a complete petulant twit.

The spin on McCains absurd choice for running mate is so obviously biased! You journalist covering it want the voters to believe it is a good decision. Well, were not buying it! And you journalist are losing credibility every second that you try and put a spin on this nonsense! My seven year old daughter laughed! But you journalist have proven to be everything most were saying, Obama haters!! Do your job, a novest journalist could get a better story out of the Palin choice than that sugary mess you guys are offering!!

Ron from Bel Air   August 31st, 2008 11:13 am ET

Unfortunately, it looks like Gustav will indeed bear down on our Gulf Coast states, and is set to do heavy damage.

We, the people, urge restraint from both parties not to politicize the events related to this storm. Already I have heard on the cable channels, "Just you remember how the Liberals politicized, Katrina, how they still do!! THEY'RE AT IT AGAIN ALREADY!!!"

Katrina wounds, on the ground in the people and our national psyche, have not healed. There was and is plenty of blame to go around, starting with the people who chose to live below sea level without exit strategy of any kind. It is difficult to say anything about state or federal reaction without it sounding political.

Let's do our best not to waste effort and emotion on that largely baseless premise—everyone want to help. Let's put politics on hold. Republicans, call off your convention; Democrats, hold off this week.

Paul   August 31st, 2008 11:12 am ET

Its very strange that some one from James Dobson's group was asking that people pray that Obama's speech be rain out at mile high, looks like it will rain on MaCain.
"One man has said God dont like ugly and He is not excited about pretty either."
"We will reap what we sow" This stuff I read on these blogs are very interesting. God know's the heart of these two individuals running for president and He will chose the one who He will give power to.

Dobson asked his followers to pray that God show his displeasure with the nomination of Obama by sending rains and tornados to Denver. Instead, the DNC has beautiful weather. I'm just saying………..

Thank the Republican reverend who prayed for rain on the Obama DNC for the changes in plan. When you pray for evil, sometimes evil comes for you, especially when your evil. Even Mother Nature is against Republicans this year, in addition to bad economy, war in Iraq, war in Afghanistan, possible war with Iran, POW's exploiting their time as a POW, seven kitchen tables, home foreclosures, gas prices, food prices, Republicans who think we're whiners….there's more you know.

Not that they really wanted him there in the first place. McCain must be doing cart-wheels (72 year-old ones!)

Pepo   August 31st, 2008 10:52 am ET

Move it to Alaska !

Scott Tucson   August 31st, 2008 10:52 am ET

Let see..New Orleans is mostly black democrats anyway, go with the Convention!

Rod   August 31st, 2008 10:51 am ET

You may call it divine justice. Some evangelical preachers told their followers to pray for rain during Barack Obama's acceptance speech. Now God may have giving them an answer.

GrandMa   August 31st, 2008 10:50 am ET

Please ask McBush: why if he had 5 years no home or kitchen why as soon as he comes back destroy the home that his wife made for him during the five years of waiting and loneliest in her prim time of her life and left her penny less? He is follower of Obama and he thinks by choosing the women as Vise President he now can use the change in his campaign. You can use Change only when you mean it not when you copy it. I wonder what will McBush does if he win, oh I know he just follow the Bush policy. Mccain took a trophy wife over a real one why would he not take a trophy VP over a real one.
The fact remains, McCain exploits women for political gains.
I put my country first is nothing but a gimmick.
Case in point, McCain and Sara .
Its a pity when in this centrury a man that does not respect women exploits them.
McCain is against equal pay,
He is against the right to choose,
He has sent our children to I raq while his son is protected form harms way.
Lack of Universal health care affect women most.
Now presenting a women will make all these RIGHT.
Desperate move underlining what i've been saying all these months,
McCain does not think things through. You've met her once and all of a sudden she is your VP.

Wrangler - Kansas   August 31st, 2008 10:49 am ET

The GOP has the convention center until September 18. I am sure they would love to delay the convention until next week so they could chant "9/11″ for four days.

Mike Dallas   August 31st, 2008 10:48 am ET

HHMMM didn't the rabid Right group Focus on the Family pray for rain last Thursday night in Denver? There was not a cloud in the sky, while 85,000 folks listened to Obama's acceptance speech. However, isn't Monday night the night HRH and Dick were to mumble and rale at the Republican convention? Seems Gustav is set to hit the U. S. on Monday.

So, just using the logic of the rabid Right 's Focus on the Family, guess that means God is on the side of Democrats. That is comforting to know that God rebukes the Rabid Right, in whose name they invoke to judge and condemn. Maybe this also answers WWJD? He would send sunshine to the Democrats and send the worst storm in modern history to Republicans.

Republicans should now offer up prays of thanks for sending Gustav during the Republican convention, so, they can use the storm as a cover and close early and hide the fact that it should have closed early anyway, due to lack of interest.

This should also free up HRH so he can do another flyover and then ride in on an Army convoy on Thursday 4 days after the storm, for a photo op. Silly me, I forgot my native Louisiana now has a Republican governor, maybe he will move the convoy up to Wednesday.

Jeff   August 31st, 2008 10:48 am ET

I think that many are hoping Bush doesn’t attend. It would be ironic if a hurricane in Louisiana got him off the hook THIS TIME.

Jimmy   August 31st, 2008 10:47 am ET

President Obama, yes
President Biden, yes
President McCain, if we have to
President Palin, no way in hell

Think America.

Art   August 31st, 2008 10:46 am ET

To the evangicals who think they have an inside track to our heavenly father, think again. A few weeks ago you're telling evangicals to pray for bad weather when Obama accepted his nomination, It was a beautiful night. God bless and protect our brothers and sister.

Jessie, TX   August 31st, 2008 10:45 am ET

Choices of VP:

Obama= 1
McCain= 0

Obama WINS.

Cleveland   August 31st, 2008 10:45 am ET

Do you remember this "christian" preacher who asked his followers to pray for rain of catastrophic level during the DNC? Looks like Mother Nature is teaching this republican supporter what all true christians (The true followers of Jesus Christ) know: Matthew 7:12 "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
Life is a boomerang.

S. Boatman   August 31st, 2008 10:45 am ET

I Pray For Everyone To Be Safe From This Storm! I Have Lots Of Relatives In That Area! . . . The Republican Convention Will Most Likely Be A Flop Anyway. . . Most Of The Republicans Are Not Even Going Anyway!

Tom   August 31st, 2008 10:44 am ET

We all need to pray for the people on the coastal states and not be like Dan Fowler, a Democrat and ex-DNC chairman with his comments about this. CNN – play the tape.

Shannon   August 31st, 2008 10:44 am ET

It seems a bit unfair that the Republicans aren't going to be able to have their own convention. Donna Brazille was just on talking about how inappropriate it would be for them. The media is saying they should suspend a lot of the activities and just use it to raise money for people in need. I think there were people in need in this country and elsewhere during the Democratic convention, they weren't expected not to give their speeches and raise money for the needy. Why is the media so in love with Obama, why are we even having an election, he has already been chosen. We didn't even count all the votes in the primary, and the media destroyed HIllary Clinton, this is just another step in having Obama anointed King.

Chrissy, MA   August 31st, 2008 10:44 am ET

Dear John,

Sarah is no Hillary, and she will never be Hillary. Your selection shows your thought process and how you really feel about women. Thanks for showing your true colors John, my vote goes back to Barack Obama.

Enrique   August 31st, 2008 10:43 am ET

Keeping one of the most unpopular presidents in American history away from the convention is the one silver lining of Gustav for the GOP.

Lynn   August 31st, 2008 10:42 am ET

It should be and also Obama should stop his bus tour also for the time being.

T'SAH from Virginia   August 31st, 2008 10:41 am ET

WHY?? The only reason why you want to suspend the convention is because YOU will get LESS COVERAGE from the MSM – it has NOTHING to do with concern for the people in Gulf states because you can show that concern at the convention… BUSH not attending or CHENEY not attending WOULD show that AT LEAST this time they CARE….

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!!

REMEMBER??? – This was SUPPOSED to happen to Obama on his last night at the Democratic National Convention….Catastrophic RAINS – terrenntial RAINS – WINDS, etc… God DOES NOT like UGLY!!

OBA-DEN 2008-2016 – YES WE CAN!!!

Renee, NY   August 31st, 2008 10:41 am ET

If McCain is smart he will welcome one less day. Less time to scrutinize his new beauty queen selection of a VP.

Just like he made a rash decision to leave his first wife Carol, and their three kids for a bathing beauty, he made a rash decision to grab media attention with another bathing beauty–Sarah Palin.

Sarah, another woman who looks as though she's scared of him.

He's not putting country first, he's putting himself first.

Ken from Michigan   August 31st, 2008 10:40 am ET

It's a SIGN!!

Jeremy   August 31st, 2008 10:39 am ET

What they really mean to say, is they are taking a straw poll to find out which response will give them the biggest political advantage. Why else put out that it may become a service event…. like they are trying to see how it is received before hand. The idea is to get out, not go in there McCain. More people, press, and the distraction of the public show is not necessary here. Do what is right, but be careful not to appear to try to benefit from natural disaster. It is a slippery slope.

Stud   August 31st, 2008 10:38 am ET

It's really ironic that religious nuts prayed for heavy torrential rain during the Democratic convention and it ended up being a nice and pleasant day but for the Republican convention we're getting a possible category 5 hurricane. Their God sure is funny and on the right side of history.

Republican for Obama   August 31st, 2008 10:38 am ET

Does the irony strike anyone else that a "Christian" group, and Iuse that term loosely, made a video for everyone to pray for rain on Obama's speech and the weather was great but there is a Hurricane during the RNC's convention?

It would appear that God would rather we treat each other with respect rather than disdain, who would have thought? Oh yeah anyone that follows the teachings of Christ!!

Texas Trail Kitty   August 31st, 2008 10:37 am ET

Is President Bush afraid of getting caught in a hurricane? Well now he knows how New Orleans felt 3 years ago, only the residents of the 9th ward had no choice. At least, in this election year, the residents of New Orleans will actually be help. Good!

Chipster   August 31st, 2008 10:37 am ET

So, the Republicans plan to use the disaster approaching LA, AL, & MS as a prop for their convention? Now we're told that Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are heading for the area to ……. hmmm, do what? Do the Governors of those states in the path of destruction have nothing better to do right now than to entertain and provide security for presidential candidates. Neither McCain nor Palin have any purpose for being in the region. It's political theater and complete nonsense. Should Sens. Obama and Biden rush to the area as well? Isn't it better to get people OUT of the area? Good grief!

Rodger   August 31st, 2008 10:36 am ET

The only good thing that's coming out of Gustav will be saving the GOP to delay the embarsement of having to introduce Palin.

chilliej   August 31st, 2008 10:34 am ET

And Don Fowler, formar Chariman of the DNC, thinks Gustav hit now because God is on the side of he DNC. They are really full of themselves.
McCain/Palin 08 (Former Hillary supporter)

CB   August 31st, 2008 10:34 am ET

Bush wasn't there for the 1st one – not suprised he's bailing out now! Republicans just don't deserve another term! We tried it their way. Time to try something completely different.

Tom   August 31st, 2008 10:33 am ET

A sign from God of the failed Bush administration and the future of our country if McCain wins.

The people and God are speaking as one, enough, ENOUGH.
