Sens. Biden and Obama campaigned together in Michigan Sunday.

(CNN) – If Sen. Joe Biden was hurt that Republican operative Karl Rove called him a “big blowhard doofus” at an event in Minneapolis Monday, he didn’t show it.

On hearing the news, Biden grinned and said “he’s a great American.”

The blog Politicker ME reports that at a Maine delegate breakfast at the Republican National Convention, Rove, the so-called “architect” of the Bush administration, called Biden a “big blowhard doofus.” Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is notorious in Washington for being talkative at Senate hearings.

Later, in response to a different question, Rove is reported to have asked "Is there press in this room?"

Biden addressed the criticism during a flight on his campaign plane Monday evening. A reporter asked if the senator would now answer to “Senator Doofus.”

“You can call me anything you want,” he said. “I learned a long time ago you can call me anything you want.”

Both political parties have made a point in recent days to draw down partisan rhetoric as Hurricane Gustav threatened the Gulf Coast. Biden said he would have no trouble drawing his sword in the weeks to come.

“I don’t think we’ll have any trouble resuming the campaign,” he said. “I guess Karl did it already. I guess he didn’t get the memo.”

Biden’s campaign spokesman quickly released a statement rebuking Rove for the comments.

“It’s more than a little sad that with another hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast, Karl Rove is up to the same old attack politics that he practically patented while helping dig a deep hole for our country to get out of,” said Biden Spokesman David Wade. “Americans deserve better, especially at a time like this.”

Rove has already been more successful than Biden will ever be. And he is, you know, allowed to state his opinion. You don't disagree with that right, do you?

GRB   September 1st, 2008 10:01 pm ET

Who is the doofus? Is Rove looking in the mirror?

Herny the Independent from NYC   September 1st, 2008 9:35 pm ET

The fact that Biden is far more famous and prestigious than Rove whom in turn is infamous, is demonstrated in his response to this childish comment. It solidifies why, how, who and what is mainly responsible for our current situation on many issues.

Mildred Kish   September 1st, 2008 9:35 pm ET

It seems that the Republican party has nothing to offer ordinary people; so therefore they have to use their spin machines to pull their oponents down .That is all they have to offer. I had almost eight years of their policies and it has been very bad for the country.

George from Westerville   September 1st, 2008 8:55 pm ET

I have to agree with Jon Stewart (and thus this might not get posted) that the 24/7 news media is so configured to compete for ratings and shove something in front of our faces that we get these "National Enquirer" type of "news". Karl Rove, one of the most shameful people in the history of politics, calls someone a playground name and we devote a story to it??? Wait a minute … WHY DID I WASTE MY TIME POSTING THIS? OMG … I'VE BEEN SUCKED INTO CNN'S DEVIOUS WEB OF TRIVIALITY!

biden/palin debate :I thought the purpose of a debate was to gain understanding of a person's knowledge about a subject. As a woman, I personally think it is ludicrous to suggest that biden go easy on palin in regards to national security debates because she is a woman! what a con to make it sound as if biden is down on women because he adept in this area. talk about putting women down and discrediting them! we need informed, courageous people leading our country. I would rather think that this is a planned strategy to make it appear a good thing when actually it is a manipulation. If Palin can not hold her own in a debate with Biden how can she be expected to hold her own with foreign diplomats? if men are forced to treat Palin with kidd gloves it will set the women's movement back 20 years! Please!

Hearing comments like Karl Rove's- just proves to me that the Bush politics are in good hands with tJohn Mc Cain and the Republican party. The Republicans should try to put their country first for a change. Picking a potential Vice President who nobody knows, including Mc Cain. He only met her once! A person who is only a heart beat away from running the country. Sarah Palin is second in charge to a man who is 72 years old, and who has had cancer four times.

Republicans put their country last & themselves first.

IndependentTogether—I think that Rove called Senator Biden a "big blowhard doofus". The article isn't that difficult. Rove is the bad guy (again, and yet again) this time. He is the king of dirty politics and he and Limbaugh should run for president since they have so much positive to share with America. Rove and his ilk are sad and yet feeling sorry for them doesn't come easily.

I always find it funny how people refer to Rove as an "architect" of the Bush administration as if it's some great accomplishment. The people who built the New Orleans levees were architects too. I want to hear Rove's opinions on politics just as much as I want to hear their opinions on how to keep New Orleans safe.

Funny how there are always protesters protesting war, but none of them stand there and suddenly realize that had the leaders of America listened to anti-war protesters throughout history, America would never have been free from Britain, would never have stopped Japan cold in their tracks during WWII, and would not have helped stop Hitler's rampage throughout Europe. Remember, America was trying to stay out of WWII until it was apparent that we would be the only ones to stop Hitler.

There is a new Hitler in this world, and it is called radical extermism. I don't care what religion you lay claim it is for if any religion at all…but there are groups of people in this world and slaughter humans like ants, chopping heads off, stabbing pregnant women, strangling little babies. If you do not find this disturbing and a direct threat to the countries around the globe, you are naive.

Imagine had we turned a blind eye to events throughout history, the differences the world would be in today. Maybe Hitler would have ruled the world and taken over everything. Maybe his empire would have reigned supreme? Imagine him deciding to kill you just because he didn't like you.

At least Americans and coalition troops GO OUT OF THEIR WAY to protect civilians the best they can. Meanwhile those same enemies stand with women and children in front of them as shields.

So good luck to all your anti-war, peace loving protesters. I am all for peace but this is a dark world with many geo-political problems brewing…Iran, Russia, Georgia, Afghanistan, Africa.

If you want to elect leadership that will turn a blind eye, go ahead. But when it really hits the fan, you better not say "why didn't we do anything in the first place?"

Remember, your beloved Bill Clinton had Osama Bin Laden in the cross hairs and he did nothing to stop him when he could have. Imagine a world without 9-11 in it…thank you Democratic failed leadership.

Sherry, Atlanta   September 1st, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Rove's failure to show at a Democratic Party-planned show trial was fortunately thwarted by executive priviledge. What the Democrats really hate about the man was his ability to shine a light on the obvious ineptness of their presidential candidates. I know it will be most difficult to do, but perhaps the DNC should really search for a qualified nominee in the future?!!

Regis   September 1st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

I guess they want to pick up where the primaries campaigns left off. The trick are not going to work this time America is watching.

Obama/Biden 08/12.

McCain=the draft   September 1st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Why isn't Rove in jail for refusing to testify????????

Charlotte   September 1st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

One more of Karl Rove's distractions to keep us off the issues. It's part of his republican plan.

NO MORE MCWAR !!!!!!

Chris   September 1st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

If Karl Rove insulted me I would take it as a compliment and smile.

I'd rather be a doofus than an arrogant criminal who is only avoiding prison due to the power of big oil.

Erik   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

So is Rove now officially an RNC mouthpiece or does he just slither out from under a rock now and then to act like a ten-year-old?

georgia independent   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Sticks and stones…

Go Joe. Sensible people don't listen to Rove's drivel…

Dave   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Shouldn't this Rove guy be in Jail?

Mark   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

And Karl Rove is called Kaptain Corrupt for being the architect of one of the most corrupt constitution destroying administrations in history.

Mary   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Don't worry…Biden is more of a flip flopper than obama…what a pair……HE IS THE ONE WHO SIAD obama WAS NOT QUALIFIED TO RUN THE COUNTRY…big deal …he has been campaigning for months…he has not had to make one decision for this GREAT COUNTRY…his biggest decisions……WHAT TO WEAR FOR THE DAY

SUE, Michigan   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

Christopher,
The Bush administration is one criminal activity after another-have you not read any of the books out there, nor listened to anything but Fox? Try Keith Olbermann for a few nights and listen to some truths.
The one we got convicted, Libby, Bush illegally pardoned so he wouldn't talk. And he prides himself on grabbing as much power to the Executive branch as he can get away with. Unfortunately, the Dems haven't had a majority to impeach them all, but it may still happen. And you will blame it all on the left, no doubt. Do some reading-you'll be shocked and angered at the abuse of power in the White House.

Julie   September 1st, 2008 7:34 pm ET

I can't believe the child/boy & coward that is Karl Rove has gall to show is face in public. But then he is the epitomy of the Republican Party. Birds of a feather.

NO Extremeright Palin 08   September 1st, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Karl Rove is a big blowhard doofus not Biden. Why isn't this guy in jail for all counless felony that he has commited.

Northwest Washington   September 1st, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Karl should watch out who he is calling Doofus. Didn't he plan and execute the brilliant Republican election that netted 0 out of 6 wins for the Senate?

Joe Regis   September 1st, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Karl who?

Randy   September 1st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Haha, this is basically a good thing for Biden. I consider anyone who Karl Rove calls a doofus my friend.

mcbush!   September 1st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

it's funny to imagine a chubby little karl rove, the fat kid no one liked, mumbling obscenities about the bigger kids who made fun of him.
only problem is……

J.B. Il   September 1st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Rove, Is an american, I call you a Traitor and a war criminal and I sincerely hope that one day justice will be heapt upon you.

Pete   September 1st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Mr. Rove should stop wasting his time on childish insults and put his energy towards making sure he's protected from the FLAYING he's all but certain to get if the Dems win the White House. He's only got 4 months left.

bill m   September 1st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Rove go testify then you can talk you…blow hard doofus.

Liberal for Life   September 1st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

What??????? I thought Rove was in Jail…They let that convict out?

joe   September 1st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Pelosi, Reid and many other on the left have said a lot worse about President Bush. However I give props to Biden for just taking it in stride.

Jake   September 1st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Wonder what Rove has to say about the success of Sarah Palin's abstinence-until-marriage campaign. Maybe something like "She's a sweet little blowhard doofus" but she's OUR doofus."

KMAN   September 1st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Who cares what Mr. Potato-Head calls Biden? I'd take it as a compliment considering the source!

RJ   September 1st, 2008 7:30 pm ET

Nothing wrong with what Rove said — he's right on about Biden!

Roberto   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

That's funny coming from the party that insures that blowhards have a steady job. Blowhards like Limbaugh & Hannity carry the Republican standard proudly with their endless hypocrisy. Anything coming from the mouth of Mr. lie, lie, lie, repeat (Rove) is a joke.

Toby   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

I thought the Republicans said they wouldn't engage in such things while Gustav was such a threat. I'm sure Biden's answer will be strongly denounced as partisan at a time of national crisis.

Adam   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Christopher,

How about the crap that Rove said to get Bush in the White House? It is just Rove spewing his usual. Rove has come to symbolize why the country is sick of the GOP.

I love you Joe   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Yeah but he's our blowhard and I think he's a great addition to team Obama!

DWoods   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Good job Biden!! Don't give baldylocks a second thought.

John .A   September 1st, 2008 7:29 pm ET

Thank you soccer ball face Karl Rove for giving us George Bush the greatest president ever, dummy go figure, Just say no to 4 more years of Bush

Lune   September 1st, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Note my words"soon Karl Rove will ended in jail

Larry   September 1st, 2008 7:28 pm ET

The Bush Administration didn't want him anyway, especially after the "Rove" scandal

Leslie from Garden Grove, CA   September 1st, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Silly Rove…

Chi-town gurl   September 1st, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Should we expect anything different from Rove? This joker's time in politics is coming to an end. Should we all be blessed when justice is served and this "A" hole will be in jail pretty soon for all of the corrupt things he's done……what goes around always comes around…..darkness ALWAYS comes to light!

Sam Rose   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

CNN-

Please stick to the issues–this is just "same old-same old" campaign garbage–

Christopher   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Sounds tame in comparison to the things the individuals in the Bush admin have been called by the Left over the past 8 years.

David   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

At least Biden has not refused to testify in front of congress. If Biden is a doofus, Rove is the king of the cowardly doofus. Rove, be a man and tesify in front of Congress instead of hiding.

Ann   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

"A Big Doofus Blowhard?" Does Rove HAVE even 1 mirror in his house???

Hillary Supporter   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

its really sad that the republican spin machine picked a day when we are having a natural disaster to reveal this news yet they want everyone not to politicize it. The McCain camp made this political by the timing of this news. "Hey N.O. is suffering and everyone is watching the hurricane so, lets break the news" wow!!!!!!!!!! McCain, you are shameless.

Dakota   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

It's good that Rove supports McCain though. People like him are all the support McCain can get.

Evan Crum   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Does anyone care what Rove says? Honestly? Can see why he's on FOX. He is so "fair and balanced".

Nikki - NC   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Karl Rove calling people names like a troubled kid in middle school??? I'm shocked – shocked i tell ya!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08 & 12

Ron democrat turned independent   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

i remember during the Texas debate that sen. Clinton backed down sen.Obama, making him reluctantly renounce farrakhan. Biden seems to cut from the same cloth

sjp   September 1st, 2008 7:25 pm ET

i thought rove was under investigation? anyway is rove all the republicans have left, it seems as though he's the only one talking. also if he's the architect of what bush/cheney did, isn't it just a little unsettling he's backing mccain.

Jean   September 1st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

What is it about Karl Rove that Republicans like so well. This fact is enough to not support such SLEEZE.

The american public is better and smarter than the Rove crew!!!!!!!!!

America is part of a global society and Rove is shameful.

Nana   September 1st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

its so sad that carl rove is trying to be relevant. why should senator Biden dignify that parasite by responding to his childish name calling?

O'BIDEN 08!!

GOP   September 1st, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Rove, Palin and McCain will crash and burn this time

Cynthia   September 1st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

I am anxiously awaiting for Senator McCain to renounce and repudiate Karl "Doofus" Rove's comment. It is interesting how Karl can offer comments about the Democratic Party but won't go before the Congressional delegation and testify. Now that would be something that we all could appreciate him going to testify.

jeanette   September 1st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Rove is a complete joke – a talking head for Fox News….and an attack dog for John McCain and the republican party.
I'm so glad CNN more respectable people on their show.

gm   September 1st, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Rove should not call anyone by any then their proper name. The Honorable Sen. Joe Biden has dobe more for our country then Rove could even think of doing. Any person who thinks they are above the law should not ever show their face in public. Oh, I forgot he is part of the Bush/Cheney administration and if you are a part of that administration you are above the law. Rove get lost.

VT in Atlanta   September 1st, 2008 7:22 pm ET

You tell 'em Biden. It's what you answer to that matters. Soon, you won't be answering to Senator… anything — it'll be Vice President Biden.

OBAMA/BIDEN – '08/12

jd   September 1st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Falls into the look who is talking category.

Rove is an Idiot   September 1st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

It is beyond reason why anyone would willingly allow Karl Rove to take part in any convention – even the RNC's

brad   September 1st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I love this guy Biden. So authentic. Rove is the biggest blowhard to hit washington ever and probably should be in jail for that matter.

texas4obama   September 1st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

what is Karl Rove…4 years old. Grow up! The Doofus is that guy you have in the office now.

Obama/Biden '08

Phil Newton in Murphy, Oregon   September 1st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Hey, wasn't it Karl Rove who predicted Obama would pick a political, pandering VEEP? Guess THAT didn't happen.

What does Karl have to say about McCain's pick?

No pander bears in Alaska now…are there?

Deb   September 1st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

The Republicans have proven themselves not fit to run our country. We shouldn't be surprised by anything they say or do. Come on America, wake up! Eight is Enough!

Go Obama-Biden, America needs you.

ROVING   September 1st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Kark Rove is straight up pathetic and a great surrogate for the republicans…

Proud American   September 1st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Biden knows he will have the last laugh when he becomes vice president he will endict Karl Rove for all the crimes against America.

Rob   September 1st, 2008 7:20 pm ET

Biden may talk a bit – but he has done a trillion times more good for American than Karl Rove ever did. Karl Rove is a convicted felon in waiting and NOBODY should give a crap what that man says.

CNN POST THIS!

longhairs for obama   September 1st, 2008 7:19 pm ET

rove is scum.

Voter   September 1st, 2008 7:18 pm ET

I'm sure Biden will cry all the way to the White House.
